- 1:24Speaker 1: My next guest, First time we've ever really spoken, but
- 1:29Speaker 1: I see her all the time on TV, so I
- 1:31Speaker 1: know she's making money. Because that's the money making conversation.
- 1:33Speaker 1: We won't talk about that. He is an actress, writer,
- 1:36Speaker 1: comedian right there, writer, a comedian. We cool me and her.
- 1:41Speaker 1: We bonded actress Rashean McDonald could not act. That's what
- 1:45Speaker 1: we That's what we did for right there. She's a
- 1:48Speaker 1: Los Angeles native. I'm from Houston, Texas, southern boar West
- 1:51Speaker 1: coast girth. That's where we did forer right there, third
- 1:54Speaker 1: grade spelling be champ. Now your boy could spail on that. Now,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I didn't make the championship with this spelling be. But
- 2:00Speaker 1: I I got to the fourth round, you know, some
- 2:03Speaker 1: words got up there to me that I really threw
- 2:05Speaker 1: me off there in the spelling b. I didn't realize
- 2:07Speaker 1: the importance of it till I got older that I
- 2:10Speaker 1: could actually put it on my credits like she got
- 2:12Speaker 1: it in her credits. I'm saying most importantly, she said
- 2:15Speaker 1: serious regularly on the new ABC comedy Single Parents, with
- 2:18Speaker 1: premiers after Modern Family. That show has been on forever.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I show hope Single Parents is on forever. And for
- 2:24Speaker 1: the past five seasons, she has replayed reporter Ashley on
- 2:28Speaker 1: ABC Scandal who ain't watched Scandal? Whow please work with
- 2:34Speaker 1: money making conversations Kimry Lewis. Hey, I'm so happy to
- 2:42Speaker 1: thank Kimy. You got some things going on, girl. Okay,
- 2:50Speaker 1: let's talk about this, you know, because and I want
- 2:53Speaker 1: you to be like me and the people say that,
- 2:54Speaker 1: and know that I always tell people my goal is
- 2:57Speaker 1: starting this show, Kimry, and I want you to be
- 2:59Speaker 1: a friend of mine. And because I've always been a
- 3:01Speaker 1: mentor all my life and didn't really know it, and
- 3:04Speaker 1: then as I got older, I realized when I look
- 3:06Speaker 1: back and when people come on my show, they tell
- 3:08Speaker 1: me what I've done for their career and with them
- 3:10Speaker 1: along the way, And I just did it unconsciously because
- 3:13Speaker 1: that's my personality. When I look at a young talent
- 3:15Speaker 1: like you, and I see that you you you you've
- 3:18Speaker 1: developed a multiple streams of income, and I want to
- 3:22Speaker 1: know how did that come about? In the whole process
- 3:24Speaker 1: of saying, Okay, I can do stand up, I want
- 3:27Speaker 1: to act, I want to write. How did that not
- 3:30Speaker 1: that that process developed because a lot of people need
- 3:32Speaker 1: to understand your technique in doing that and developing that, Yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know you can't. Nowadays, there's just no no excuse
- 3:42Speaker 1: for not, uh, like you say, having multiple streams of
- 3:46Speaker 1: income and and getting the training in all the different
- 3:51Speaker 1: crafts that surround your passion. So for years, I said, Okay,
- 3:54Speaker 1: all I want to do is be an actor, right,
- 3:56Speaker 1: That's all I want to do. But you know, you
- 4:01Speaker 1: would go out on these auditions, which were few and
- 4:03Speaker 1: far between to begin with, and then when you get
- 4:07Speaker 1: to the audition you say, okay, like the script is
- 4:09Speaker 1: kind of kind of funny, but like I can insert
- 4:12Speaker 1: my own jokes here, and you know it's let me
- 4:15Speaker 1: make a little bit, a little bit more funny, you know,
- 4:17Speaker 1: funny than me. And so I was like, you know, hey,
- 4:21Speaker 1: I can, I can. I can write a little bit.
- 4:23Speaker 1: You know, I do stand up, So why not make
- 4:27Speaker 1: myself you know, a machine that can go not just
- 4:32Speaker 1: when people are calling you in for for auditions, but
- 4:35Speaker 1: you know a business that's running even when they're not.
- 4:39Speaker 1: You know, create your own work. I'm writing my own
- 4:41Speaker 1: scripts and you know, doing stand up whenever, whenever I
- 4:44Speaker 1: feel like it. Um So it's you just get tired
- 4:50Speaker 1: of waiting. And that's very true for folks to call
- 4:54Speaker 1: on you, and that will push you to do some things.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And it did me. I remember when right, you know,
- 5:00Speaker 1: bill bills are making you like, do some ugliness. Ugliness girl,
- 5:04Speaker 1: you go on stage in for the four people. I
- 5:05Speaker 1: did that one time and Corpus Christie. I went on
- 5:08Speaker 1: stage and for the two people. That was the first show,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and guess what they stayed for the second show. I
- 5:14Speaker 1: went up to the owner. I went up to you
- 5:17Speaker 1: kidding me, Yeah, when they paid to get every sean,
- 5:21Speaker 1: Hey man, I only got one act, only got one act.
- 5:26Speaker 1: You're about to hear the same show, so I know
- 5:28Speaker 1: what you're saying, and I wanted to I wanted to
- 5:30Speaker 1: let everybody know what she's saying here is that Like
- 5:34Speaker 1: I left IBM had a math degree. Mathematic is my degree,
- 5:37Speaker 1: and I was I was successful IBM. And when I
- 5:40Speaker 1: left to do stand up comedy, comedy, I felt that
- 5:44Speaker 1: was I didn't have to ask anybody to go on stage.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I figured I can go out there and showcase my
- 5:50Speaker 1: talents and get paid for Whereas an actor and actress,
- 5:53Speaker 1: you really are are a prisoner to the moment of
- 5:58Speaker 1: if somebody calls on you. Where as a stand up
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know, you go out to a clue, you underscript,
- 6:03Speaker 1: you know, you understand what I'm saying because because you know,
- 6:06Speaker 1: you know in l l A and you're a rarity,
- 6:09Speaker 1: when when she's an l A Native, you don't really
- 6:12Speaker 1: run across people like her. You know, everybody comes to
- 6:15Speaker 1: l A to be a starter, and a lot of
- 6:16Speaker 1: people think that l A. You're born in l A,
- 6:19Speaker 1: You're gonna be a talent. How did that? How did
- 6:21Speaker 1: that work for you? Because you're l A Native. You know,
- 6:23Speaker 1: and and you and you and you and you broke
- 6:27Speaker 1: through because you you get you're you're in a competitive
- 6:31Speaker 1: field where you have so many people traveling to Los
- 6:34Speaker 1: Angeles to do what you do. How did you pull
- 6:36Speaker 1: it off? Yeah, I'm lucky. I think it's a combo
- 6:44Speaker 1: being a little bit crazy, uh, but also having just
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, a great support system. Um I have. You know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: my family and my friends are here, and I think
- 6:57Speaker 1: it's important. Yeah, you gotta make your money and be
- 7:03Speaker 1: in this industry. But for me, it's always nice, uh
- 7:07Speaker 1: to hang out with my family and friends who aren't
- 7:09Speaker 1: in the industry, you know, just to have some time
- 7:11Speaker 1: off and recharge. Um. So yeah, but I love being
- 7:15Speaker 1: from l A. This is my city. We can talk
- 7:19Speaker 1: about some eating places in a minute. But I'm on
- 7:21Speaker 1: the phone. She's on the phone. Kimry Lewis. She plays
- 7:24Speaker 1: Poppy in the new family comedy Single Parents. It's called
- 7:28Speaker 1: Single Parents on ABC premier September twenty six. Every Wednesday
- 7:32Speaker 1: will come on Yester Wednesday at yes, sir, it's nine
- 7:38Speaker 1: West Coast, East Coast, eight thirty Central. See, people don't
- 7:41Speaker 1: know that, you know. Yeah, I'm worldly. I've lived on
- 7:44Speaker 1: both coasts, so it took me a minute to know
- 7:46Speaker 1: that the news comes on on East and West that
- 7:48Speaker 1: level times ten o'clock in the Central time zone. People
- 7:52Speaker 1: think of crazy, but but I love talking to a comedian.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You know, he's a compliment. When I hear your voice tone,
- 7:59Speaker 1: it reminds me of a good friend of mine. Windy
- 8:01Speaker 1: were Carol Robinson, and that's to me, that's a Wendy
- 8:06Speaker 1: was my She was one of my first acting teachers
- 8:09Speaker 1: here in l A. I love Wendy. Shout out to
- 8:12Speaker 1: Wendy Grace Conservatory. Oh my god, that's what I do.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I donate to that. I buy sixteen scholarships every year.
- 8:27Speaker 1: My wife and I sixteen scholarships every year to the
- 8:30Speaker 1: amazing Grace Conservatory that's founded by Wendy record very talented actors.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Just bring up the speech she played a co starred
- 8:38Speaker 1: on Steve Harvey Serious. She played the principle all those
- 8:41Speaker 1: years and many many other roles. And one of my
- 8:44Speaker 1: largest donations I ever made was made to her her
- 8:48Speaker 1: Amazing Grace Conservatory every year. They just under me last
- 8:52Speaker 1: year is one of their outstanding um leaders and contributors
- 8:55Speaker 1: to the Amazing Grace Conservatory. And to say that you're
- 8:58Speaker 1: part of that, girl, you know, we were even closer everything. Man, Listen,
- 9:05Speaker 1: there's there's not a lot of opportunities for for kids
- 9:08Speaker 1: in the hood, you know. And I grew up in
- 9:10Speaker 1: South Dala, so that was one of mine, my safe places. Man.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And Mr Wendy is everything. I love her. That's amazing.
- 9:18Speaker 1: That's amazing. So we're gonna talk a little bit about
- 9:20Speaker 1: you being a single parent because I want to. I
- 9:22Speaker 1: want to talk to us because that's a balanced life.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And I'm gonna tell you something, Ms. Lewis I failed
- 9:27Speaker 1: in that. I failed in that and I tell people
- 9:30Speaker 1: that publicly to let them know. They look at a
- 9:32Speaker 1: lot of success that I have achieved in my life
- 9:34Speaker 1: and I'm currently achieving in my life, but I failed
- 9:37Speaker 1: and not understanding when to put the brakes on, say
- 9:40Speaker 1: family time, because I love when you said my families here,
- 9:42Speaker 1: my support systems here. Well, I'm not saying I abandoned it,
- 9:46Speaker 1: but I know that I just was so focused on
- 9:48Speaker 1: being making it. I was so focused on denying that
- 9:52Speaker 1: there was only one lane for me, and that was
- 9:55Speaker 1: to win. And I really love the fact that you said, Rishan,
- 9:58Speaker 1: I have a balanced life. When we come back, I
- 10:00Speaker 1: want you to talk about that on the phone. She's
- 10:02Speaker 1: on the phone. One of the stars of the New
- 10:05Speaker 1: hit ABC sitcom Single Parents. Kimry Lewis too is ra
- 10:11Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. You're listening to Money Making Conversation. This is
- 10:13Speaker 1: my show. I called it my show. I'm bragging. Guess
- 10:17Speaker 1: wasn't in some place in life when you achieve a
- 10:19Speaker 1: level of success. If you can't talk good about yourself,
- 10:22Speaker 1: then why are you talking what? I'm talking good about myself?
- 10:24Speaker 1: Because Money Making Conversation is a show that was created
- 10:26Speaker 1: to help other people, to mentor people to give them
- 10:29Speaker 1: information about being successful in the business that they may
- 10:33Speaker 1: want to chieve achieve success, but they'll understand the hard
- 10:37Speaker 1: work on the phone. As a young lady who's been
- 10:40Speaker 1: starting many years on the popular TV series Scandal, Who
- 10:44Speaker 1: don't know Scandal? Who don't watch the Scandal? She played
- 10:46Speaker 1: reporter Ashley, and it's always interesting when people can just
- 10:49Speaker 1: switch over. Now she's doing a very popular sitcom that
- 10:53Speaker 1: premiers every Wednesday after Modern Family. She plays the character Poppy. Please,
- 10:57Speaker 1: welcome to back to the show. Miss Lewis, how you
- 10:59Speaker 1: doing that? Hey? We're kicking it? I love it? Okay. Now,
- 11:06Speaker 1: you're a writer? What does that mean when you say
- 11:07Speaker 1: the word writer? You know I was a sitcom writer?
- 11:10Speaker 1: And I'm always gonna say I'm a sitcom writer. But
- 11:12Speaker 1: when you say writer, what does that mean? And and
- 11:15Speaker 1: because your novelist, you're your your poet or your sitcom writer,
- 11:19Speaker 1: you're a punch up writer. What type of writer are you? TV?
- 11:24Speaker 1: And stand up? So I write my own jokes on
- 11:27Speaker 1: stage and I write scripts. Um, the braindon show coming
- 11:32Speaker 1: out of Kevin Hart's network L O L. And it's
- 11:34Speaker 1: called The Donors. So that's a new series to check
- 11:36Speaker 1: out next next next month. Actually, now that's a digital show,
- 11:41Speaker 1: right it is? Yeah? Yeah, man, that's the space right now,
- 11:47Speaker 1: right now? Why why do you say that? Let everybody
- 11:49Speaker 1: know youre just gonna throw out some that's the stage
- 11:51Speaker 1: right now. Now, we have to admit that that's where
- 11:53Speaker 1: Insecure came from. Insecure was a was It was an awkward,
- 11:58Speaker 1: awkward black girl. That's a we're black girl. I saw
- 12:01Speaker 1: that show the other day. It is so fascinating. I
- 12:04Speaker 1: don't know if you just don't if you're just a
- 12:07Speaker 1: female period, you don't have to be a female of
- 12:09Speaker 1: color to under relate to that show. That show is
- 12:12Speaker 1: crazy and good and so and so when you see
- 12:15Speaker 1: that digital space, why why do you feel it so
- 12:17Speaker 1: appealing and why you think so many people are turning
- 12:19Speaker 1: to that as a form of entertainment. Well, for a
- 12:24Speaker 1: few reasons. One is, you know, it's like those wherever
- 12:28Speaker 1: you go. You don't have to be sitting at home,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you don't have to go to a movie theater to
- 12:31Speaker 1: see it. Um. But also it's on your own time,
- 12:35Speaker 1: you know, Um, you don't have to be at work.
- 12:39Speaker 1: You know, you can watch it whenever you want to
- 12:42Speaker 1: watch it. It's not like some shows nowadays. If you
- 12:45Speaker 1: don't have a DVR, then if you miss the show,
- 12:47Speaker 1: you miss the show digitally. It's there. It's gonna be
- 12:50Speaker 1: there whenever you're ready for it. Um. And it's also worldly.
- 12:55Speaker 1: I mean, let's the long gone are the days of
- 13:00Speaker 1: oh gee, let's just watch this in a or in
- 13:02Speaker 1: the stage. Now it's like, you know, I got people
- 13:05Speaker 1: in Brazil hit me up. I don't know exactly what
- 13:07Speaker 1: they're saying, but a lot of exclamation marks after it.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So I'm like, hey, that's good, I'll take that. So
- 13:14Speaker 1: so about big at social media, it's just a high
- 13:17Speaker 1: important social media to your brain. It's it's very important.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You know, you gotta get the word out, you know,
- 13:25Speaker 1: how it is you got shows to promote, you got
- 13:28Speaker 1: you want to feel the seat. You gotta let people
- 13:30Speaker 1: know where you're gonna be. Um, if you you got
- 13:33Speaker 1: a show coming on, which I do. I always like
- 13:35Speaker 1: to give people a little behind the scene doing every
- 13:39Speaker 1: episode because it just makes it makes you feel more accessible,
- 13:43Speaker 1: you know, it makes you feel like, oh, man, like,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I remember Canry saying she was gonna rock that that
- 13:48Speaker 1: dress in this upcoming episode. Let me check for that dress. So,
- 13:52Speaker 1: you know, poppy poppy characters. He owned the wine store, like, oh,
- 13:56Speaker 1: you know what, I'm gonna be drinking some you know
- 13:58Speaker 1: moscato episode. So it's it's nice to be able to
- 14:03Speaker 1: engage with my fans. I love them. Well. The thing
- 14:05Speaker 1: about it is that you know social media has you
- 14:09Speaker 1: gotta have you got somebody like I think I read
- 14:11Speaker 1: that Kevin hard Like has a hundred and twenty one
- 14:14Speaker 1: million social media file. Here were so far behind that
- 14:22Speaker 1: I got. I got a hundred millions, hundred millions to
- 14:29Speaker 1: catch up with the catch up. So when you see
- 14:34Speaker 1: when you see brands out there, and you know, I
- 14:36Speaker 1: respect you know, Kevin is my boy. I respect him,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and and I also say that they've changed the system.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Now when you really can't get there, you know, the
- 14:44Speaker 1: algorithms and Twitter algorithms and Instagram and and they get there,
- 14:49Speaker 1: they charge you. You gotta almost buy your your fame
- 14:53Speaker 1: nowadays through social media. Now, So how do you post? Well?
- 14:56Speaker 1: How do you what? What? What are you? What are
- 14:58Speaker 1: your most popular post that you created? Engaged or just
- 15:01Speaker 1: like you just just be authentic and just post what
- 15:03Speaker 1: you feel. I think that's the key. You know, It's
- 15:09Speaker 1: it's a hard balance for me because you wanna, you
- 15:12Speaker 1: want to be accessible, be a fans, but for me,
- 15:16Speaker 1: I also like I enjoy my privacy. Um So I
- 15:20Speaker 1: want to as an artist, you know, you want to
- 15:22Speaker 1: be able to give your fans as much as you
- 15:24Speaker 1: can while saving a little something for yourself, you know.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Um So, I think the most the post that I've
- 15:32Speaker 1: had that have had the most engagements are, um, when
- 15:36Speaker 1: I'm being silly or you know, when I'm you know,
- 15:40Speaker 1: when I had this one video where I was in
- 15:42Speaker 1: New York and I was going up to people. There's
- 15:45Speaker 1: a huge billboard of single parents and Time Square and
- 15:49Speaker 1: you know, I'm on it. I'm on the billboard. So
- 15:51Speaker 1: I'm walking up to Time Square like Hey, you recognize
- 15:53Speaker 1: anybody on the billboard and they're like, nah, anybody, That's
- 15:59Speaker 1: what I like, just like behind the scenes stuff for
- 16:02Speaker 1: stuff where I can just or you in the right
- 16:05Speaker 1: city because New York was there, they'll tell you who whatever.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Let's keep walking who is now? Here's the here's the
- 16:14Speaker 1: funny part about it. Here's a funny part about your career.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Okay that when you're doing stand up and I've been fortunately, uh,
- 16:23Speaker 1: I've been a stand up. I always be. You ever
- 16:25Speaker 1: go back doing a stand up that's a stand up
- 16:27Speaker 1: is hard. A lot of people need to understand that
- 16:30Speaker 1: telling the joke to strangers, not telling jokes to your
- 16:32Speaker 1: family cool because you know the nuances of what will
- 16:36Speaker 1: make them laugh. But when you walk in the room
- 16:38Speaker 1: and you don't know these people and they paid money,
- 16:41Speaker 1: that's a difficult task. What as a stand up? There's
- 16:45Speaker 1: there's some assets to being a stand up. It has
- 16:47Speaker 1: bade me you know, um, I guess that courageous. I
- 16:51Speaker 1: can I can speak to anybody. What are the what
- 16:53Speaker 1: are the advantages of being a stand up? Has helped
- 16:55Speaker 1: you in your career? Ad me a writer? You know,
- 17:01Speaker 1: I'm I don't I write my own stuff. So it's
- 17:04Speaker 1: made me, you know, feel confident enough to become a
- 17:09Speaker 1: television writer. Um, you know, you know, you know this.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But for those who are listening, comedies all about timing
- 17:19Speaker 1: and you know, if you mess up one word, the
- 17:24Speaker 1: joke is done. You know. So being able to have
- 17:28Speaker 1: that ear and develop that ear as a stand up
- 17:30Speaker 1: has made me more able to, um find jokes in
- 17:35Speaker 1: scripts and I'm acting in and if there's if the
- 17:39Speaker 1: jokes aren't there, then it's also helped me to infuse
- 17:42Speaker 1: some jokes. But it should be jokes. H you know, yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 1: you're absolutely right. It's it's it's really you know, because
- 17:51Speaker 1: you know, I'm talking to you, and when I don't
- 17:53Speaker 1: always like to talk like it's an inside conversation that
- 17:56Speaker 1: I try to open it up so everybody can understand
- 17:58Speaker 1: and relate what we're talking to. Because I've had some
- 18:00Speaker 1: bad nights on stage as a stand up. I've had
- 18:03Speaker 1: some nights on stage where I go, why am I
- 18:05Speaker 1: even trying to make people laugh? I've been in cities
- 18:07Speaker 1: I'm going, is this my future? You know? Because I
- 18:11Speaker 1: don't see And sometimes I've been on stage going I'm
- 18:14Speaker 1: so funny, Okay, why aren't people giving me more money
- 18:17Speaker 1: because I'm so funny. That's how funny I am. You know,
- 18:20Speaker 1: if you do three and here's the funny thing, if
- 18:22Speaker 1: you do three shows in the night, by the time
- 18:24Speaker 1: you get to the third show, your question whether you've
- 18:27Speaker 1: done that joke already. If you ever get to that point,
- 18:29Speaker 1: that's scary because you go, did I just do that show?
- 18:33Speaker 1: So you you have to really be focused when you
- 18:35Speaker 1: go on stage, you know what I'm talking about. That's
- 18:37Speaker 1: the worst feeling in the world to go on stage
- 18:39Speaker 1: in the middle of your set and you go, Okay,
- 18:42Speaker 1: am I about to tell a Joe I just said?
- 18:46Speaker 1: And it was destroy an amazing set, amazing set. So
