Latest / Life For Toledo / The Story of the Paralyzed Man

- 0:00I'm thinking today of a very specific verse.
- 0:02It's kind of like, it's nested in a story. It's
- 0:05about a paralyzed man who is before Jesus, and
- 0:08Jesus forgives his sins. He says, your sins are
- 0:10forgiven. And then they're really like challenging
- 0:13him in their heart, and they're wondering, how
- 0:15can Jesus say that? I mean, that's sort of, you
- 0:17know, blasphemy or whatever. And then the man
- 0:20is still laying there on his mat, paralyzed,
- 0:22and Jesus says, which is easier, to say to the
- 0:24paralyzed man, your sins are forgiven, or to
- 0:26say, get up and pick up your pallet and walk?
- 0:29And then he says, but so you can know that the
- 0:31Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive
- 0:32sins. And then there comes this verse. He looks
- 0:36at the paralyzed man and he says, I say to you,
- 0:38get up, pick up your pallet and go home. The
- 0:42man immediately gets up and he takes his pallet
- 0:43and he walks away. Now, this causes all kinds
- 0:45of problems, of course. And that's the way it
- 0:48was with Jesus during his public ministry. Everything
- 0:50that he did that was good for one person caused
- 0:52a lot of trouble with other people. And I think
- 0:53it's a little bit like that in life. That's why
- 0:55people say no good deed goes unpunished, because
- 0:58there's always complications every time you try
- 1:00to do good. But guess what? We've got to do good.
- 1:02You can only overcome evil by doing good. And
- 1:05so it is our job to be going around helping people
- 1:08pick up their pallet and go home. If you see
- 1:10a need, I'm not talking that you have to give
- 1:13up everything that you are, everything that you
- 1:14have, or really sacrifice or whatever, but you
- 1:17ought to want to meet that need. We ought to
- 1:19want to help a person get moving again. So I'm
- 1:22encouraging you today that you would, I would,
- 1:25that we would all get moving again, that we would
- 1:28make a difference again. We remember that to
- 1:29be a city is to be in community. To be in community
- 1:31is to care about your neighbor. It's a Christian
- 1:33foundation. It's not stodgy.
