- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 8, we see Jesus
- 0:45perform a series of four miracles consecutively.
- 0:48In particular, he stills the sea, he cast out demons, he
- 0:52heals A hemorrhagic woman, and he raises a dead girl back to
- 0:55life. On the surface, these miracles
- 0:58may seem like unconnected examples of Jesus being Jesus.
- 1:01When we look at them as a group, we find that the Holy Spirit is
- 1:05teaching us a powerful truth about power and fear.
- 1:08In this 8th chapter of Luke, let me show you what I mean.
- 1:12In the first story, we find the disciples caught in a great
- 1:14storm on the water. They come to Jesus, who's asleep
- 1:17on the boat, and wake him up, saying, Master, Master, we are
- 1:20perishing. They are afraid of this storm.
- 1:23Jesus gets up, rebukes the wind and waves, and the storm is
- 1:27calmed. Now listen to the language of
- 1:29verse 25. And he said to them, where is
- 1:32your faith? They were fearful and amazed,
- 1:35saying to one another, who then is this that he commands even
- 1:39the winds and the water, and they obey him.
- 1:42As they see the power of Jesus over nature.
- 1:45Their fear of the storm is replaced by a fear and amazement
- 1:48at their master Jesus. In the next story, as we've seen
- 1:53before in other accounts, Jesus cast out legion from a man who
- 1:56dwelled among the tombs. After this act demonstrating
- 1:59Jesus power over demons, the people of the city become
- 2:02frightened. They see the power of Jesus and
- 2:05our verse 37 says gripped with great fear.
- 2:09They weren't afraid of the demons anymore, they were afraid
- 2:12of the one who had power over them.
- 2:14Then we see Jesus heal the hemorrhagic woman.
- 2:17She's been bleeding for 12 years and has been unable to find
- 2:20healing anywhere. She approaches Jesus in the
- 2:23crowd and touches the fringe of his cloak, and immediately she's
- 2:25healed Jesus, demonstrating his power over sickness and disease.
- 2:31Jesus notices what has happened and calls for the one who
- 2:33touched him to come forward. The woman came trembling,
- 2:36afraid, and fell down before him and told him why she touched
- 2:40him. Jesus responds in verse 48.
- 2:43Daughter, your faith has made you well.
- 2:45Go in peace. She was afraid of what might
- 2:48happen to her as a result of her boldness, but Jesus honors her
- 2:52and blesses her. Finally we see Jesus raise the
- 2:55daughter of Jairus from the dead.
- 2:58As he's talking with the hemorrhagic woman, someone from
- 3:00Jairus's house comes to tell him that he need not bother Jesus
- 3:03anymore, it is too late, his daughter is dead.
- 3:07Jesus hears this news and says do not be afraid any longer,
- 3:11only believe and she will be made.
- 3:13Well, there's that fear again. Jesus enters Jairus house and
- 3:18raises the girl back to life with a word and a touch and her
- 3:21parents are left in amazement. So in these four stories we see
- 3:26Jesus demonstrate his power over nature, his power over demons,
- 3:29his power over sickness, and his power over death.
- 3:33And in all four stories as a whole, we see that because of
- 3:35Jesus, we need not fear anything or anyone except for the Lord
- 3:40himself. If our Savior has the power over
- 3:43nature, over the spiritual realm, over sickness, and even
- 3:46over death, what is there to fear?
- 3:49Nothing. Nothing except the one who
- 3:52possesses that power. And when we fear the Lord, when
- 3:55He alone is the one we honor and esteem and hold in high holy
- 3:59reverence, we will not receive his anger or His wrath or His
- 4:02power poured out against us. Rather, like the hemorrhagic
- 4:06woman, we will receive from him a healing touch, a blessing, a
- 4:09word of kindness. This is not to say that in this
- 4:12life we will not have trouble. In fact, the reality is just the
- 4:16opposite. But when we meet those difficult
- 4:18circumstances, when we experience pain and suffering,
- 4:22we can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the One who is able
- 4:25with a word to remove every one of those painful circumstances
- 4:29from our lives is with us. And even when He chooses for our
- 4:33good to allow those trials to remain, we need not fear because
- 4:38He is still with us. For He Himself has said, I will
- 4:42never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.
- 4:46So do not fear what life throws at you, fear God alone.
