- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their lives.
- 0:09And it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:13And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:16Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:21I am Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese,
- 0:24here with you every Saturday and Sunday evening from 8 to 8.30 as we look at
- 0:29the good news of Jesus Christ through the readings of this weekend's Mass.
- 0:34This is the sixth Sunday of Easter. We're just a couple weeks away from Pentecost,
- 0:40and our readings are kind of building up to that event, and you'll see that
- 0:44as we get into them in just a little bit.
- 0:47What's going on in my life? Well, let's see. Praise to God that my nephew is home safe.
- 0:55Gabriel was on a submarine. His first tour on a submarine is an ensign.
- 1:01He was sailing out of Oahu, out of Pearl, and ended up going to Guam.
- 1:10And from Guam, went on a little sail jaunt and took part in Operation, was it something, Fury?
- 1:19Yes. I can't think of the name. Epic Fury. Took part in Operation Epic Fury.
- 1:25You heard of an enemy vessel that was sunk by a torpedo, the first ship sunk
- 1:33by a torpedo since World War II.
- 1:35Well, that was my nephew's submarine.
- 1:38So for his first time out, he had quite a bit of excitement.
- 1:43I can't wait to hear his stories when he gets back.
- 1:46But while he was gone, he got a promotion. He is now Lieutenant Junior Grade.
- 1:52And he got his dolphins. And for anybody who's interested in naval stuff,
- 1:58naval trivia, dolphins are awarded to submariners.
- 2:03Who proved themselves useful. That means they know enough on the operation of
- 2:09a submarine to be useful. So he got his dolphins and he got elevated to Lieutenant J.G.
- 2:17So congratulations, Gabriel, and glad to have you home safely, my boy.
- 2:21And hope you're going to, hope you'll stay in Pearl for a little while.
- 2:27Hope you'll get a chance, because he's getting married soon.
- 2:29He's getting married this summer.
- 2:30I am supposed to go to, unfortunately not to Oahu, they're getting married back
- 2:36in Boston, where the bride lives and the groom's family, my youngest brother
- 2:42lives, and they're getting married in the Boston area.
- 2:44So I get to go to Boston to take part in the marriage ceremony,
- 2:50deaconing the mass. So I'm looking forward to that.
- 2:53Just a sharp young man, and we're very proud of his service to our country,
- 2:58but we're very grateful to God that he came home safely. Backyard is blooming.
- 3:03Front yard's blooming. The whole garden, the whole yard is blooming.
- 3:06Been enough rain and enough sunshine.
- 3:09No, I had very little freeze damage. John asked, it didn't freeze?
- 3:14Because we've had some cold nights.
- 3:15I had some early lilies, some what we call resurrection lilies, lady slippers.
- 3:21They've got all kinds of names that had some freeze damage, but that's okay
- 3:26because they don't send up their flowers till like August.
- 3:29So it's just a little leaf damage. They look kind of motley,
- 3:32but they'll be fine. They're still green and they'll flower.
- 3:35But peonies are open. Geraniums are open.
- 3:39I've got irises, all kinds of irises that have flowered already.
- 3:43Looking great. Yard's looking great. And it's so thick and lush and green.
- 3:47And the birds. We've talked about birds before.
- 3:51So about a week ago, I decided I hadn't seen any, but let's give it a try.
- 3:56I put out an oriole feeder and a hummingbird feeder.
- 4:00And three days later, at the same time, and they're on the same shepherd's hook.
- 4:06And this is a double hook.
- 4:08So one hook has a hummingbird feeder. One hook has the Oriole feeder.
- 4:14What is an Oriole feeder, you ask? Well, you slice an orange,
- 4:18and you put the orange halves on a stick, on a steak, and then you put a bowl of grape jelly.
- 4:27Grape jelly, can you believe that? And not only do the Orioles like it,
- 4:30it turns out some of the sparrows are into grape jelly.
- 4:34I like them better in a in a good red sauce but no sorry the thought of sparrows
- 4:42and grape jelly anyway so you put out a little bowl of grape jelly and a couple
- 4:46of oranges and it attracts.
- 4:50Orioles so i i got baltimore orioles and hummingbirds at the same time hanging
- 4:56on the same they have them both clustered there that was very cool to see,
- 5:00And I've got all kinds, I've got all kinds of birds in my backyard.
- 5:03And what they don't eat, they knock to the ground and the squirrels and the
- 5:07rabbits and the ducks are eating.
- 5:09So my wife got up the other morning and she had to wake me up to come look out
- 5:13the window. Because she says, it looks like a fairy tale.
- 5:16We had in the backyard, we had mallards and rabbits and squirrels and cardinals
- 5:24and mourning doves and Carolina wrens.
- 5:28Just all kinds of critters all at once in the backyard. Just first thing,
- 5:34it was just like an hour after sunup. It was gorgeous.
- 5:37It was really great. And it was noisy with all the birds singing.
- 5:40And it was just, it was very cool.
- 5:42And then the neighbor's cat wandered into the yard.
- 5:46And we had one more thing in the backyard, my wife chasing the cat away from
- 5:51all of the other wildlife.
- 5:53But yeah, so things are growing. I love seeing, you know, here's the thing.
- 5:58And I'll only get on my soapbox for a minute.
- 6:01We see a lot of young people returning to church, and it's not just our parish.
- 6:07I've talked to some of my brother deacons from other parishes.
- 6:10They're seeing the same thing.
- 6:11Huge increase in high school and college age, young men and women coming to
- 6:17Mass and taking part in the activities at the church, which I love to see.
- 6:23And we also get from where we're at, we're near a couple of colleges,
- 6:27so we're now getting quite a few.
- 6:30Students from Illinois Wesleyan, Illinois State University coming to Mass.
- 6:35And it's interesting because Illinois State has a very active Newman Center.
- 6:40They pack the place, Sunday Masses. I mean, they pack the place.
- 6:44And so to see 15, 20 students at a time coming to Mass has been really great.
- 6:50Just seeing them outdoors. So here's my soapbox.
- 6:54Turn off the computer, get outside. God has created for us a gorgeous world.
- 7:01I mean, if you want to see God, if you have trouble finding God in your life,
- 7:05get away from the computer and
- 7:07the TV and the monitors and get outside and look at what God has created.
- 7:13This is a beautiful world.
- 7:16I know I have a lot of friends who, when they plan vacations,
- 7:21you know, they're going to resorts and they're sitting out at the beach,
- 7:24getting a tan, you know, partying, whatever. And that's fine.
- 7:27However you want to spend your time. Okay, your leisure time.
- 7:30My wife and I prefer, and my brothers are like this as well,
- 7:34we prefer going to like national parks and nature sites, seeing wild animals
- 7:41up close, getting photographs,
- 7:44seeing the Grand Canyon and the mountains and the rivers.
- 7:47We would much rather spend our time out hiking in nature.
- 7:53My youngest brother last, was it last fall, last summer, spent like two weeks
- 7:59hiking through the highlands of Scotland.
- 8:02He and his wife and his college-age son, two weeks, I mean, just hiking from
- 8:08town to town through the highlands, raining almost constantly. It is Scotland.
- 8:13It rains like constantly. Every picture he sends me, you know,
- 8:17look at the deer in the background behind us through the rain.
- 8:20And, you know, look at the waterfall behind us through the rain.
- 8:24They're always in their rain gear and slickers.
- 8:28But yeah, they get out into nature and they see this gorgeous world that God has created for us.
- 8:34And if you're sitting in your house, no wonder you feel separated from God.
- 8:39You are, because God didn't make your furniture.
- 8:42He didn't paint your walls. No, God didn't do the flooring.
- 8:46God didn't do the computer monitor, things like that. No, I'm sorry.
- 8:50He might have given the creativity to human beings to do it,
- 8:53but you get outside and this is God's handiwork. This is stuff that he touched,
- 8:58you know, that he created, he made through his word.
- 9:01To me, that's just, that's mind-boggling. It's breathtaking.
- 9:05And I just love doing that.
- 9:07We've got a few trips, short trips coming up this year, a couple of them to
- 9:11see family and one of them to go see grizzly bears.
- 9:14I'm telling you, I'm anxious about this. This is crazy. Why would I want to
- 9:20walk through a forest with grizzly bears?
- 9:23Don't know, but everything I read says, don't worry, they don't care about you.
- 9:28They're too busy eating the fish.
- 9:30So as long as I don't carry a tuna sandwich in my pocket, I think I'll be okay.
- 9:35But no, we're going out to see grizzlies up close and personal because they're
- 9:40God's creations too, right?
- 9:41So we are taking some precautions. We're going to pick up some bear spray along the way.
- 9:46You can't take it on the airlines. I don't know why, but they won't let us take it on the airplanes.
- 9:51But there's actually, there's a store right outside the airport when we land
- 9:56where you can pick up your bear spray.
- 9:58Imagine that. You rent it. Now, here's something weird.
- 10:01Now, I thought I'd done a lot of cool traveling, right? And learned a lot of
- 10:06neat stuff. And I travel mostly in the U.S.
- 10:09My wife and I have left the U.S. one time. But we're going to an area that's got a lot of bears.
- 10:14So there's a store that rents bear spray, holster, everything.
- 10:20Because they said, don't put it in your backpack and don't put it in your pocket
- 10:24because the bear's not going to wait for you. You know, you got to have it ready.
- 10:29So there's a holster that puts it, you put it in the holster and,
- 10:33and you rent it. And when you, when you're done, you bring it back.
- 10:37And if you haven't used it, you get half your rental back.
- 10:41And if you used it, well, you're out of luck. You've paid for it already.
- 10:46It's now you give the holster back and, you know, the next guy down the road gets a new can of spray.
- 10:53Yeah, but hopefully don't have to use it.
- 10:57But I think if I'm going to go walking through the forest where there's grizzly
- 11:00bears, I'm going to take some spray with me. Right.
- 11:04Right, and they're not going to let me carry the gun on the plane either.
- 11:08I'm pretty sure. Yeah, pretty sure.
- 11:11But no i'm i'm this is some of the wildest stuff we've seen a lot of weird wild animals,
- 11:17but i've never i've never been i've been close to
- 11:20a bear once yellowstone he was he was
- 11:23actually eating an elk and he was
- 11:25on a hillside about about a hundred yards
- 11:28away from us this is a big bear and he's
- 11:31ripping open the thigh of an of a of an
- 11:34elk right and there's like 200 of us standing
- 11:37around taking pictures and the
- 11:41bear turns to look at the crowd and he
- 11:44doesn't just turn his head he turns his body around now he's
- 11:47uphill bears run pretty fast and they can run downhill even faster than they
- 11:52can and they can run uphill really fast this bear can probably do i mean there's
- 11:57no brush or anything this is just open field so he can do 35 miles an hour easy
- 12:02so to cover less than a football field.
- 12:06I mean, in a flash, right? So he turns around.
- 12:11And so my wife and my son and I, well, I grab a hold of my wife and my son by
- 12:18the arm and I start backing them up to the car.
- 12:22We are the only three moving backwards. The other 197 people are trying to walk
- 12:29toward the bear to get a better picture.
- 12:32And I'm thinking, I don't know what the bear sees, but I think you guys look delicious from here.
- 12:37You know, the bear has got to be thinking the same thing. Luckily,
- 12:41he decided I could chase down the moving ones, or I could just sit here and
- 12:45munch on the one that I've already killed.
- 12:48And he turned back around and went back to the elk. and the ranger who shows
- 12:52up is warning everybody, get back to your cars. Get everybody back to your cars.
- 12:57This thing was really close. So I have seen one grizzly bear once,
- 13:01but now we're talking about seeing dozens and being out in the forest walking
- 13:07to a river that the bears are walking to.
- 13:09And the hope is that they're more interested in the fish in the river than in the hikers.
- 13:16I don't know. We'll find out. No one's ever, No one on this same location has
- 13:23ever been attacked by a grizzly before.
- 13:26Yet, yet, yet. But there's always, always the first one, right?
- 13:32So anyway, that's what's going on with me. Bears and plants and submarines and flowers.
- 13:39That all makes sense, right? It all ties together.
- 13:41Get outside. Go see God's handiwork. We're going to learn more about God's handiwork
- 13:46when we come back after just a couple of messages.
- 13:48We're going to look at the readings from the sixth Sunday of Easter.
- 13:52You're listening to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.

- 15:28And welcome back to Good News. I'm Deacon Al Lundy.
- 15:32We're looking at this weekend's readings from the Mass, pardon me,
- 15:37and point out a couple things ahead of time for our first reading from the Acts
- 15:41of the Apostles, which we've been hearing from for the last few weeks.
- 15:45Last week, we heard about the creation of the diaconate, where Peter and the
- 15:52apostles said, go pick out some, I told the priests and the elders,
- 15:57go pick out some men, seven men from the community who are just and upright
- 16:02men, and we're going to ordain them.
- 16:04We're going to lay hands on them, and they will be servants to the widows of
- 16:09the area while we preach and say the Mass.
- 16:13And so they picked out the seven men. Well, among them was Stephen,
- 16:18who you might remember is the first martyr of the Catholic Church who died at the hands of St.
- 16:25Paul before he was St. Paul when he was Paul of Tarsus, Saul of Tarsus, sorry.
- 16:32But one of the other seven was a fellow named Philip, not to be confused with
- 16:36the Apostle Philip. This is the Deacon Philip.
- 16:39And we hear something about Philip in today's reading.
- 16:43And in this, you learn a little bit about church history and about how the church
- 16:48hasn't changed much in 2,000 years.
- 16:51You wonder, why do we do the things we do? Well, it's in Scripture.
- 16:54And I'll explain that after you hear this reading.
- 16:58So this is from the eighth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles.
- 17:02Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed the Christ to them.
- 17:07With one accord, the crowds paid attention to what was said by Philip.
- 17:11When they heard it and saw the signs he was doing for unclean spirits,
- 17:15crying out in a loud voice came out of many possessed people,
- 17:18and many paralyzed or crippled people were cured, there was great joy in the city.
- 17:24Now, when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word
- 17:28of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them,
- 17:33that they might receive the Holy Spirit.
- 17:35For it had not yet fallen upon any of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- 17:42Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
- 17:46So what did we learn from this? Philip, a deacon, is off to Samaria,
- 17:51which is mostly Greek, so it wasn't even a Jewish community,
- 17:56this is a Greek community,
- 17:57a Gentile community, and he's preaching the Gospels.
- 18:02And he's doing other things as well. He's healing the sick. He's casting out demons.
- 18:07All the kinds of things that Jesus had just said last week.
- 18:10He told his disciples, yes, I've done these things, but you're going to do these
- 18:14and even greater things.
- 18:16So here we have not even an apostle or a priest, but a deacon is out curing
- 18:22the sick and exercising deacons, exercising demons and baptizing.
- 18:30Well, deacons still baptize.
- 18:33We still do all these things. We still preach. We still baptize.
- 18:36We can still give blessings to the sick. We can still minister to the sick.
- 18:42But he didn't bring the Holy Spirit down upon them. He didn't confirm them in the Holy Spirit.
- 18:48That had to be done by Peter and John, apostles, bishops.
- 18:54Even in today's church, deacons can baptize and preach, but we don't confirm
- 19:00that has to be done by the bishop or by someone appointed by a priest appointed by the bishop.
- 19:07And so we see that same thing happening 2000 years ago.
- 19:11So that hasn't changed. The church maintains pretty much everything we did 2000 years ago.
- 19:17The way we were structured then is still how we're structured today. Our second reading.
- 19:23Is, again, from the first letter of St. Paul, as they've been for the last couple of weeks.
- 19:29Paul writes, Beloved, sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.
- 19:33Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a reason for your hope.
- 19:38But do it with gentleness and reverence, keeping your conscience clear,
- 19:43so that when you are maligned, those who defame your good conduct in Christ,
- 19:47may themselves be put to shame.
- 19:51For it's better to suffer for doing good, if that is the will of God, than for doing evil.
- 19:57For Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous.
- 20:02Then he might lead you to God. Put to death in flesh, he was brought to life in the Spirit.
- 20:09So, once again, this is talking about confirmation, about being able to answer
- 20:15questions about your faith.
- 20:17Anyone who's been through confirmation now in the Catholic Church should have
- 20:21had enough formation to understand their faith and be able to share that faith
- 20:25with others and to explain any falsehoods that might arise.
- 20:30So again, what we do today and how the Church functions today is very much the
- 20:36same way it functioned in apostolic times.
- 20:40Our reading from the Gospel is from John.
- 20:45This is from chapter 14. Jesus said to his disciples, If you love me,
- 20:51you will keep my commandments.
- 20:52And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to be with
- 20:56you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept,
- 21:01because it neither sees nor knows him.
- 21:04But you know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.
- 21:09I will not leave you orphans.
- 21:12I will come to you. In a little while, the world will no longer see me.
- 21:16But you will see me because I live and you will live.
- 21:21On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I in you.
- 21:28Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me.
- 21:33And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal
- 21:38myself to him. The Gospel of the Lord.
- 21:42So once again, what we're talking about in this final reading of the Mass in
- 21:47this Gospel is confirmation.
- 21:50This is setting us up for what's going to be the first Pentecost in the Catholic Church.
- 21:55Pentecost meaning 50 days. So 50 days after the resurrection,
- 22:00Jesus is going to appear. We celebrate this in two weeks on the 24th of May.
- 22:06Jesus will appear in a locked room, upper room, with the apostles and several of the disciples.
- 22:13And he will breathe on them and the Holy Spirit will settle on them as if like tongues of fire.
- 22:23So we hear the Holy Spirit being described as tongues of fire,
- 22:27as floating down from heaven like a dove, as towers of flame.
- 22:33So that always seems to refer to, whenever we hear that, it refers to the Holy Spirit.
- 22:39So in confirmation, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are reignited in us from our
- 22:45baptism and brought to fruition.
- 22:48And Jesus does that for his disciples at the first Pentecost of our faith.
- 22:55And so he's reminding the disciples, the apostles, now that.
- 23:00Even though the world won't see Jesus, and the world, unfortunately,
- 23:04still doesn't see Jesus, that they'll be able to see him.
- 23:08They will be able to acknowledge his presence because Christ exists in us,
- 23:14and he's in us through our baptism and through our confirmation and through our faith.
- 23:21If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
- 23:25Anyone who doesn't keep the commandments cannot claim to be Christian.
- 23:30They can't claim to follow Christ if they don't obey what Christ said. And what did he say?
- 23:35To forgive your enemies, to forgive those who trespass against you,
- 23:41to clothe the naked, to feed the hungry, to visit the imprisoned,
- 23:47the locked in, the people who are in need of Christ's love.
- 23:54That love doesn't come just from Christ. It comes from Christ through us,
- 24:00we are expected to be the hands and the heart and the mind of Christ.
- 24:06So when people see the way we behave, they should see Christ among them.
- 24:11So I guess the question for you to ask yourself this week is,
- 24:15how do you reflect Christ in your everyday life, in how you treat your friends,
- 24:22in how you treat your enemies, in how you treat your family,
- 24:25your parents, your siblings, your children.
- 24:29Your grandchildren, your neighbor.
- 24:31How we treat others is how we believe in the love of Christ.
- 24:37And we can expect the same mercy and the same forgiveness and the same love
- 24:42from Christ that we're willing to share with others.
- 24:46I think a great story I heard once was a little girl talking to her mother and
- 24:52said, Mommy, is it true that Jesus is bigger than the whole world? And she said, Yes.
- 25:01God is greater than the whole world, bigger than everything.
- 25:05And she says, and is it true that Jesus is inside us?
- 25:10And mom says, yeah, you know, if you love Jesus, if you obey Jesus, then he resides in you.
- 25:17And the little girl says, well, if Jesus is bigger than the world and he's in
- 25:22us, shouldn't he show through?
- 25:26Yeah, well, yes, he should. He should.
- 25:29If you believe in who Christ is, and we do, and you accept that Christ should
- 25:35be within you, then Christ should show through you.
- 25:40And so as Christians, that's our calling. That's our responsibility.
- 25:46And it's a big calling and it's a big task. But we're made ready for that through
- 25:51our relationship with Christ, which comes through prayer and through worship.
- 25:56And the point in our lives where those two things meet is at the Mass in the house of God.
- 26:03So I invite you all to attend Mass each and every week and to do your best to
- 26:09let Christ show through you.
- 26:11May Almighty God bless you, protect you from all evil, and bring you to everlasting life.
