Latest / Run Mountain Peaks / Breaking Down the Presidential Traverse
Transcript
- 0:00OK, guys, this week we are breaking down the Prezi
- 0:03Traverse, one of the most iconic routes in the region.
- 0:08It's actually the number one ranked regional FKT in the
- 0:12northeast, one of the biggest routes, super iconic.
- 0:18And I wanted to break it down and I would love to do this for
- 0:21a lot of the different routes in the Whites.
- 0:23But we're going to start off with the Prezi because the Pemi
- 0:26loop is, I mean, if you're doing a Pemi loop, you got to do it
- 0:30this weekend or next weekend and then it's done for the year.
- 0:34So I thought Prezi would be good.
- 0:35So we're going to do a deep dive into this go.
- 0:39This will be if you've never done a Prezi or if you're going
- 0:41for the FKT, they'll be stuff for everyone.
- 0:44We'll go over the rules. What is an F?
- 0:47What is the Prezi traverse? What peaks do you have to hit?
- 0:50What trails do you have to hit? I did a little bit of research,
- 0:53so I think this won't be fun. And then we're going to break
- 0:56down some of the times. We're going to breakdown Jack
- 0:59Kenzel, he has the FKT for the Prezi.
- 1:02We're going to breakdown some of the times.
- 1:04We'll go through the different variations.
- 1:07I think it'll be good. And we're doing a solo episode
- 1:10today. It's been a couple weeks.
- 1:11We're doing a solo episode. This is kind of going to be like
- 1:15a throwback to some of my first episodes.
- 1:17We got a wide range of topics. We had some fun ones, some
- 1:21running stuff, but The Maine is going to be the Prezi.
- 1:25We're also going to talk about trails and races changing over
- 1:31time because that's something I look back at some of these
- 1:34records, these FKTS and the trails change over time.
- 1:38I mean, the Pemi loop shut down. There's there's trail work going
- 1:42on in the Whites at all times. So we'll talk a little bit about
- 1:44that. Does it make it harder?
- 1:46Does it make it easier? I got a moose story, kind of a
- 1:50quick moose story and a trail report from Tecumseh.
- 1:55So we'll do that and then we're going to rank my top three
- 1:58favorite TV shows of all time. I I've been doing a lot.
- 2:04I've been doing a little binging and a lot of thinking and we'll
- 2:08go through the top three shows at the end and then we're going
- 2:11to do some race results. I messed the Wah Pack and back
- 2:1621 and a half miler results from last weekend, which was a
- 2:20massive race. Totally messed that up.
- 2:23I had the previous year's results.
- 2:25I get a text from Connor Brown. He's like, hey, great episode.
- 2:29He could have just been saying that and then he goes you messed
- 2:32up the results. I was like, Oh no, so I have to
- 2:35right the wrong. We're going to go through the
- 2:37real results from this year. We got some other race races to
- 2:42preview so to go through results on we'll talk about so I'll be
- 2:47at the end. We'll talk about the whites
- 2:49throw down. This should be a good one.
- 2:52Excited for trail season. It is here Memorial Day weekend.
- 2:55I didn't even know until today. Yesterday trails were busy.
- 3:00Trails are mostly snow free. Holy crap, I'm excited.
- 3:06But all right, we got a toast story at the end of the episode.
- 3:10If I remember we got a toast story.
- 3:13I'm at that busy. And for anyone.
- 3:16Yeah, this is just really going to be a throwback episode here
- 3:19because I've been doing more like topics, some good
- 3:21interviews and stuff. There are some episodes where I
- 3:24just go on a topic for a handful of minutes and then just we we
- 3:27run through it usually in a in a spot which it's really loud.
- 3:31I got cars flying by. I have a kind of a new setup for
- 3:35the, the audio for the podcast. So I'm not like dialed in, like
- 3:40I'm not 100% sure that I can get all these cars out.
- 3:43So if I can't, it's Sunday afternoon.
- 3:46So I, I can't reshoot this, this is it.
- 3:49But OK, so the Prezi traverse I got, I have like notes all over
- 3:56the, the place here. So we're just going to, yeah,
- 3:59we'll just start going through some of this stuff.
- 4:01So we're going to break down the Prezi traverse.
- 4:04What is the Prezi traverse? This is a good question because
- 4:08for the FKT, there's various routes, there's lots of peaks in
- 4:12the Prezis. Everyone knows the Prezis.
- 4:14But what is a traverse? And I went on the the FKT
- 4:17website, which is, is kind of where I got a lot of the
- 4:20information. But even they are like, it's
- 4:24kind of, I don't know, here, here are the rules.
- 4:27You know, if most people have done it this way, So this we're
- 4:29just going to do it this way. But what they say a Prezi
- 4:33traverse is, I mean, let's just break it down, guys.
- 4:36Let's use our big brains. You are doing a traverse over
- 4:42the the presidentials in the presidential range, right?
- 4:46So a traverse point to point, you hit the presidential
- 4:50mountains and then you get down. But and and there's a ton of
- 4:56trails in the Prezi. So this is what makes it a
- 4:58little bit weird. I would say if you hit Madison,
- 5:02Adams, Jefferson, Washington, Clay, Eisenhower, Monroe and
- 5:08Pierce, if you hit all those peaks, you did a Prezi.
- 5:11That's what I would kind of interpret it as because those
- 5:14are kind of the peaks. But Clay, isn't it?
- 5:19We'll go. We'll go through the president's
- 5:21talk. So that's what I would say is
- 5:23you got to hit those peaks, but we'll talk about the peaks.
- 5:27These are all named after presidents.
- 5:29Andrew, Name the presidents off top of your head.
- 5:31Don't even don't even put me on blast like that.
- 5:33But these are all presidents. So Madison Adams, I don't even
- 5:37know if I can do the first name. James Madison.
- 5:40John Adams. Jefferson.
- 5:42Thomas Jefferson, George Washington.
- 5:46OK, Franklin Monroe. I don't know, something
- 5:56Eisenhower and something Pierce. OK, so I I got some of them.
- 6:00But so they're all named after president.
- 6:02But Henry Clay is not a president.
- 6:05So this is where the discrepancy comes in.
- 6:07Henry, Henry Clay is not a president.
- 6:10So you would say if you if I'm doing a Prezi traverse, I don't
- 6:12have to hit it. You know, he was just a
- 6:13congressman. Wrong.
- 6:16You do have to hit clay. So that's one of the peaks that
- 6:19you actually do have to hit. That isn't a president.
- 6:22And the reasoning on the FKT website is most people have hit
- 6:28it and therefore it should be, it should be done.
- 6:32So I don't know, is that even a good reason?
- 6:34I actually don't even think that's a good reason that most
- 6:36people. I don't know if I should say
- 6:40that it's not a good reason that most people who got, you know,
- 6:44approved for an FKT, they hit it.
- 6:47So you should hit it on your FKT because I'm really, I'm speaking
- 6:50from the FKT website, but I'm kind of in general saying I
- 6:54don't think that's it. That's a great, that's a great
- 6:57reason. I do think Clay is a big peak.
- 6:59So like you should just hit it, but you don't have to hit all
- 7:03the peaks. This is where it gets a little
- 7:04bit weird. So anyway, Clay, so you have to
- 7:07do Madison, Adams, Jefferson, Washington, they say you got to
- 7:10do Clay and then Monroe. I think it's fine.
- 7:14After Monroe is oh, OK. Oh yeah, before Franklin.
- 7:19No, we'll do Franklin. I think Ben Franklin.
- 7:23I don't even know. This is horrible, but Franklin
- 7:26is a mountain that is a president.
- 7:29But you don't have to do it. The FKT website says most people
- 7:33people get really close on Crawford path to doing Franklin,
- 7:37but they don't actually summit. So therefore, you don't have to
- 7:40do it. So here's like a we have to do
- 7:42Clay, but we don't have to do Franklin.
- 7:44One's a present 1 isn't This is getting weird.
- 7:47I don't know if the trail up to Franklin is actually, I think
- 7:50they kind of block it off. I don't know if there's
- 7:52vegetation in that zone, but they don't want you to go there
- 7:54for some reason. But Franklin's a miss, so you
- 7:57don't have to do it. I think on my first Prezi, I hit
- 7:59it because I didn't know. I was just trying to get to the
- 8:01top of all the peaks so that little Monroe don't even know
- 8:06where little Monroe is. I'm going to be honest with you
- 8:08people. I'm not a Prezi expert.
- 8:10Little Monroe, they say you got to hit it, which is kind of
- 8:14weird because in my head Monroe is a president, but but little
- 8:19Monroe was was a little Frankie, Little Monroe a president?
- 8:24I don't know, but they say you have to hit it.
- 8:27And then after that, the only two remaining, the only two
- 8:31remaining peaks are Eisenhower and Pierce.
- 8:34So once you get the Pierce, you just go right down to Crawford,
- 8:38Crawford Notch. And that's like the end.
- 8:40That would be the end of the Traverse.
- 8:42But everyone says, well, Jackson is a Prezi.
- 8:46You know, it's a presidential. It's in the presidential range.
- 8:49Why don't you have to hit Jackson?
- 8:51He is a president. He is a president.
- 8:54Andrew Jackson was a president, the 11th president.
- 8:57I don't know Andrew Jackson was a president, but it was not
- 9:01named after Andrew Jackson, which is so confusing because
- 9:05they must have named them all at the same time.
- 9:08But then that one isn't named after a president.
- 9:10Was Andrew Jackson president at the time that the the peak was
- 9:15named? Maybe not guys.
- 9:16Maybe there was only like 8 presidents at the time.
- 9:19I didn't really write down any of the any of the dates here,
- 9:23but but. So that's it.
- 9:25So I would say that's the peaks. They say it's Madison, Adams,
- 9:29Jefferson, Clay, Washington, Monroe, Little, Monroe,
- 9:32Eisenhower, Pierce. You do those peaks.
- 9:34I think it's a Prezi now. The FKT website says the the
- 9:40official route for, you know, the Premier route.
- 9:44You either start at Appalachia Trailhead or Dolly Cop Trailhead
- 9:48and go southbound, hit all of those peaks.
- 9:51And then once you hit Pierce, you have to take Crawford Path
- 9:55down to the Highland Center down to the Crawford Notch to finish
- 9:57it. And I, I don't know.
- 10:00So this is we're going to get down into who's running at the
- 10:03different times. But if, if people don't know, I
- 10:06think the route was originally the FKT was originally done on
- 10:10Dolly Kop, summoning Dolly, Dolly Kop going over Madison and
- 10:16then down to Matt Hutt where you do the rest of the rest of the
- 10:20run. But in some, at some point
- 10:25people started going up. Oh my God, I almost said airline
- 10:30people started going up Valley way to Madison Hut tagging
- 10:33Madison and then coming back down, which it's not really a
- 10:37true traverse because you you backtrack on yourself.
- 10:41Like I don't know if you would say it's not a true, a fully
- 10:44true traverse because like if there's a peak, you got to tag,
- 10:47you got to do it. But there is a way for you to
- 10:49not backtrack going up Dolly Cop.
- 10:52But the route basically got more popular going up Valley Way.
- 10:57So for a long time everyone just went up Valley Way and that was
- 11:01the Prezi Traverse. And I think that was the the,
- 11:04you know, official route. I don't know if Jack Kenzel
- 11:09going back and doing it from Dolly Cop impacted the FKT
- 11:14website. Like I would be curious to see
- 11:16what the FKT website said before Jack did his his recent effort.
- 11:20I would assume it already said you could do either and it's
- 11:24just built into the history of the route because Jack's
- 11:28obviously very thorough on his FKT, so he's not going to like
- 11:31make a mistake or do a a super hard effort.
- 11:33Even though he already had it when he went again, I don't
- 11:37think that he would. He would chance it that it
- 11:41wouldn't count. So you know, it would assume
- 11:42that they would count. But I do think, I think it's a
- 11:47little bit strange to have. I don't know.
- 11:50Is it strange to have Basically you can take 2 trails up and
- 11:54then the rest of the way you have to kind of follow.
- 11:56You have to hit all the peaks and you have to, I don't know if
- 11:59it says Stan Crawford Notch because I think notoriously
- 12:04Jordan Fields who had it before Jack had it, he missed the trail
- 12:08to go up to Adams and he had to backtrack to get Adams and
- 12:12obviously they counted his. So it's kind of like you need to
- 12:15take 2 trails up, but then you just have to hit all the peaks
- 12:18staying on trail, but then you have to go down the specific
- 12:22route from Pierce. Not that there's a, an easier
- 12:24way off. There's a lot of rules and I
- 12:27think about the FKT, we're talking about this with the my
- 12:30group chat. I think if the rules are set in
- 12:35an FKT, whatever the rules are, some of them are, you know, you
- 12:40start here, you end here, DIY, whatever you think is fastest,
- 12:44you go for it and you can do it. Some of them is a specific
- 12:47defined route. I think as long as the is that
- 12:51is clearly spelled, spelled out in the description for the FKT,
- 12:56then those are the rules and you can just make up.
- 12:58You don't do whatever you think. But but for this one, in my
- 13:01head, I really do think that if you go up Valley Way from
- 13:06Appalachia or you go up Dolly Cop, I do think it's two
- 13:09different routes, which is interesting.
- 13:13You know, I think we have two data points from Jack.
- 13:15He ran them each way. The second one he runs 7 minutes
- 13:18faster. I think it was fitter.
- 13:20It's probably hard to compare efforts, but I, I do think one
- 13:25of them has to be faster. I just think one of them has to
- 13:28be faster. And it would be good to get more
- 13:30info on what we think that is. I don't know if that means like
- 13:33time trialling, you know, each of the climbs.
- 13:38I don't know. It's hard because yeah, you
- 13:40basically time trial valley way up to Madison or Dolly cop up to
- 13:45Madison. If we had like 50, no, not 50.
- 13:49If we had ten data points from people in the same year doing
- 13:52the same like all out effort, I don't think anyone would do this
- 13:55like sacrifice 2 hard efforts, but maybe then I think we would
- 14:01figure out which one was faster. But I do think 11 is faster than
- 14:04the other one. I know Jack has mentioned that
- 14:07valley way eroding over the years I think impacted his and
- 14:12he may have already talked about this.
- 14:13So go listen to his FK if I think he want to run the whites
- 14:18valley way got more eroded so it's more rocky, more technical
- 14:21and that was maybe 1 of the reasons why he went from Dolly
- 14:23cop. I also think he just wanted to
- 14:25like make put it back to the original root and it's kind of
- 14:28like a cleaner, a true traverse. You don't backtrack anywhere.
- 14:31So I I do, I do actually like the Dolly cop way better from
- 14:35what I was looking at historically, people did that
- 14:41for, I don't know, I'm kind of forgetting there was a bunch of
- 14:43history on the website. You guys got to go look it up.
- 14:46It's a podcast where I ramble and you actually figure out what
- 14:50it is what I'm talking about. But I think it is nice to like
- 14:55if people were doing this back in the day and it's a cleaner
- 14:57route. I do like the Dolly cop and it
- 14:59was cool that Jack went and like established that route.
- 15:01But I think one has to be faster.
- 15:03And me and my brain, it's like, all right, if I can save one
- 15:05minute, if I'm going for something like this, I'm going
- 15:08to figure out which is faster. And it's it's interesting.
- 15:11They could change over time. So Dolly cop I think is a lot
- 15:16less popular. So maybe that one, you know, the
- 15:19time of that trail is not going to change more.
- 15:21Who knows, but that's kind of the official, the official
- 15:26route. Another thing I want to talk
- 15:29about and we'll go through, yeah, we'll go through the
- 15:31times. We're going to break down the
- 15:33times and the different variations of the route.
- 15:38But another thing I want to talk about is the winter versus
- 15:40summer aspect of doing it. This got a lot of controversy
- 15:47or, or talk on the FKT website. Ben Thompson said a couple
- 15:51really fast times on the the Prezi traverse in winter flying.
- 15:57I think one of them was 332. So technically the fastest
- 16:00anyone has ever done the F, you know, went over the the Prezis,
- 16:05which it's not the FKT, but in a sense it is kind of cool.
- 16:10But I think it definitely needs to be in its own category for
- 16:12the Prezi specifically, It is it is a completely different route
- 16:17when you run it all on snow versus on those crazy rocks in
- 16:21the north north Prezis. I don't think that's a hot take.
- 16:23I think everyone kind of agrees. But I think this route got so
- 16:27much get so much action and kind of notoriety that the winter
- 16:32designation is like really quickly we got to separate this
- 16:35out. There are some other FK TS in
- 16:37the White Mountains where there are winter time on it, which I
- 16:42think I, I think really we should try to preserve some of
- 16:45the summer, summer times. But if, if a route has been run
- 16:49in the winter, then I say go for it.
- 16:51You know what I mean? If it's in winter, it's in
- 16:53winter. But I did notice on the FKT
- 16:55website 5, they defined winter as 500 or more feet of travel on
- 17:01snow, which I have never, I've never heard that that before.
- 17:07I mean, I think it makes sense. I think they're kind of
- 17:10accounting for maybe like the Jefferson snow field or patches
- 17:13of snow, you know, when it's melting out like in a May or a
- 17:16June. But I never heard 500 feet.
- 17:20Is that short? Is that long?
- 17:21I don't know. But I thought it was interesting
- 17:24that they denoted that. So that's kind of like the rules
- 17:27of the of the Prezi stats, stats on the Prezi.
- 17:31If you're running the Prezi kind of doing like a more trail
- 17:34running effort, it's probably going to be like between 18 and
- 17:3919 miles. I think it's 18 miles, but
- 17:42watches can vary. So it's usually winds up being
- 17:4518 to 19 and then it's usually between 8000 and 9000 feet of
- 17:50climbing. That's what you're going to get
- 17:52when people hike it watches track slower.
- 17:57And if you're doing kind of more like sitting or kind of weaving,
- 18:01I don't know, watch it just track slower if you're moving
- 18:03slower. So if you hiked it, let's say in
- 18:0612 hours, which is still fast, that's, that was like a power,
- 18:10that's a very fast hike it you may get closer to 19, you may
- 18:14get 19 1/2 right. Some people may get 20.
- 18:17But really, I think the route is 18 miles and eight and a half
- 18:211000 feet of climbing. So it's a good it's a good
- 18:25route. The route itself, most of that
- 18:28climbing, about half of the climbing is just going to be
- 18:31going up to Madison. The first climb is a bear.
- 18:34If you go up Valley where Ozgood, it's about 4000 feet.
- 18:38And I think that's actually kind of good news for a lot of people
- 18:41because if you get in the hiking mode or running, if you're
- 18:45running, you just get in one mode and then you kind of can
- 18:48cruise when you're freshest. And then you get up to the top
- 18:51and you're like, all right, I'm done half the climbing.
- 18:53The rest of the peaks are are split up pretty good.
- 18:57You know, you, you get 1000 feet, but then you get, you
- 19:00know, another break to on a descend.
- 19:01You get 1000 feet to Jefferson, another break Washington and
- 19:04then it's kind of like downhill. So really the first, I think the
- 19:082 battles on the Prezi are getting to Madison, how fast you
- 19:12want to go, Do you want to just kill yourself?
- 19:14Do you want to save some energy? How are your legs in a feel
- 19:16after you get up there? And then from MAD, from from
- 19:20Madison to probably Jefferson, I think is the next hardest part.
- 19:26And if we're thinking about times there's good climbing in
- 19:30there, you got to climb up to Adams.
- 19:31It's a pretty good climb, very technical.
- 19:33Jefferson's a pretty good climb, but that section is the most
- 19:37technical of the whole section. Once you get off Jefferson,
- 19:39you're going up to Washington. It's it's pretty tame.
- 19:43And once you summit Washington, you have the southern Prezis,
- 19:46like they're fairly tame. So I think really how fast you
- 19:50climb that first climb and then how fast you get out of that
- 19:54super technical area is really going to kind of define your
- 19:57day. The rest of it is just can you?
- 20:00You know, can you push yourself the rest of the way, you know,
- 20:02super hard on kind of more downhill, your legs are going to
- 20:05be hurting. But it's less, I think it's a
- 20:09little bit less fitness and it's a little bit less technical
- 20:12ability. It's more just like how hard can
- 20:14you hammer? So that's how I think about it.
- 20:18The Northern Prezis, they are, I've said it, I say it a bunch.
- 20:23The first time you get up to the northern Prezis, the rocks up
- 20:26there are shocking. And we're going to go into some
- 20:29facts about the rocks up there. Maybe we can just, we'll just
- 20:33get into it. The rocks up there are so
- 20:36shocking. They're all jagged.
- 20:38It's because the worst weather in the world is Washington.
- 20:42Everyone knows like all three storm systems in the air
- 20:45converge all the time in the Prezis.
- 20:47So it's horrible weather, super windy, super rainy, and these
- 20:51rocks are just getting like eroded over thousands, millions
- 20:55of years. And you just are left with these
- 20:58spiky pointy, there's no good foot placement on any of the
- 21:04rocks in the northern Prezis. And every time you get up there
- 21:06it's, it's, it's quite shocking when I see people in barefoot
- 21:10shoes or 0 shoes or whatever. And the Prezis and the northern
- 21:14Prezis, I'm just like, Oh my God, their feet are getting tore
- 21:16up. Your feet get torn up because
- 21:19you're you're just stepping on these little spots.
- 21:22They're all spiky. It's so slow.
- 21:25If you fall, you're just falling into all these spiky crevasses.
- 21:29It's like, it's almost like a video game.
- 21:31It feels like when you're running on there where like if
- 21:33you fall off, you you go into like a like one of those, you
- 21:36know, traps, like a, like a steel sink trap and you lose a
- 21:40life, not a life, but you've definitely some, some blood or
- 21:45something. They're super gnarly and, and,
- 21:50and I guess we'll throw the facts about how gnarly it are.
- 21:53It is Jack Kenzel ran the effort at an 1144 minute per mile pace.
- 22:00He has the FKT 3 hours 31 minutes.
- 22:03He did the whole thing 720 gap. So he, he ran the whole thing
- 22:09with eight 8500 feet of climbing at an 1144 pace.
- 22:13His downhill from Madison to Madison Hut a half a mile.
- 22:19He ran it at a 1218 minute per mile pace.
- 22:23That is, is that even right? I doubled, I double checked it.
- 22:26I'm like, I this is right. It's a -26% grade.
- 22:30And the best runner in the world who's ever run it.
- 22:34I guess the best runner who's ever run it, a world class
- 22:36runner is running 12 minute per mile pace.
- 22:39This is what I tell people. A lot of people are probably in
- 22:43this mode right now getting back out into the Whites on on gnarly
- 22:46trails. You're going to be splitting
- 22:4912/14/15 eighteen minute per mile downhill in the White
- 22:55Mountains because it's it's so gnarly.
- 22:57And I think that just speaks to and the northern Prezis are the
- 23:01most technical probably anywhere in the Whites.
- 23:05So that's kind of just like the crux of of the technicality that
- 23:08big climb, but it's super hard. I think a lot of people get it
- 23:17is crazy that Jack ran in 331. A lot of people get in the the
- 23:21ultra mindset, especially now ultras are more mainstream.
- 23:26Cocodona 250 last man standing goes for five days, right?
- 23:30These events, 400 miles, 100 miles are kind of we scoff at
- 23:34it. And so people will see maybe who
- 23:38don't live in the region, they'll see an 18 mile run.
- 23:41Like, come on, guys, this isn't like real.
- 23:44It is for real. It is a real route.
- 23:47When when it is a real route, it's gnarly, it's rugged and a
- 23:52lot of people don't think you ran a couple 50 KS.
- 23:55You could just come out here and RIP a Prezi traverse it.
- 23:58It does not work like that. I promise you that.
- 24:01So that was one thing. It's it's a it's a it's a good
- 24:05route and it's definitely on the fringe.
- 24:08Like what I call it an ultra. I wouldn't call it an ultra per
- 24:12SE, but I it is, you know, ultra's over 50 Ki don't know.
- 24:16Yeah, I do still think like 30 miles would be an ultra, but it
- 24:20is a mountainous, a hard mountainous route for sure.
- 24:24So let's get into some of like the the talk.
- 24:28All right, Anita, if you guys are watching, you're probably
- 24:30just going to be seeing me sifting through all these notes.
- 24:32All right, so we'll talk about the actual record itself.
- 24:35We'll go. We're going to do a both a men's
- 24:38and a women's kind of like recap, but there's been a ton of
- 24:42action on the route. The first FKT was done in 20 ten
- 24:46459 by I can't even read Jan Wellingford 2010 over the last.
- 24:54I mean the last Jack has a record he ran in 2023, but over
- 24:57those 13 years there's been 11 new records after the first one.
- 25:02So almost every year someone's going after it has lowered it
- 25:05and it's just it went from 4:59 to mid fours to low fours to
- 25:10high threes to now where it's down to 331 for the men's sign.
- 25:15Lots of people rent it and some big names like some of the big
- 25:19old school people, some of the big new school people have run
- 25:23it. So on the men's side, Ryan
- 25:25Welts, Ben Nephew, Ben Thompson, Ryan Atkins, Jordan Fields, Jack
- 25:29Kenzel. I mean, these are these are huge
- 25:32names and a lot of them have done it multiple times just like
- 25:36chipping away, chipping away, chipping away.
- 25:38So I think the records come a long ways.
- 25:40I think, yeah, that 459 in 2010 is, is like, I don't know.
- 25:45How do we equip? What is the yap year adjusted
- 25:51pace? Yeah.
- 25:52What is the yap from 2010 trail running to now?
- 25:55I mean, those guys, I don't know what shoes they're wearing.
- 25:57Who knows about what they were eating.
- 25:59Like they don't know about high carb.
- 26:00They just love the mountains and were really fit a yap.
- 26:05I think every 10 years you have to take off like Boo.
- 26:10I don't need I don't know, I was going to, I don't know 5 minutes
- 26:13per hour maybe I have no idea. Every 10 years take off 5
- 26:17minutes per hour on an effort. So basically a 459 yap in 2010,
- 26:24if you do 1 and a 1 1/2 decades of yap, that's 7 1/2 minutes per
- 26:30hour. 7 1/2 * 5 is 35 plus. We won't even count the plus,
- 26:36we'll say 40 minutes. So Jan ran a 420, basically 420.
- 26:42There you go. But no, in all seriousness, like
- 26:46the shoes are getting better. The fueling's getting better.
- 26:49You know, this guy's not eating Morton.
- 26:50He was eating, I mean, 2010's not that long ago, but he could
- 26:54have been eating just gummy bears, you know what I mean?
- 26:56So who knows? But I think it's impressive.
- 26:59You just keep whittling the time down.
- 27:01And this is like when somebody runs a certain time.
- 27:07I think there's something behind.
- 27:08Like I don't want to get crazy philosophical here, but I think
- 27:11there's something behind or universe or mystical or I don't
- 27:15even know what the word is. There's something if if somebody
- 27:18else runs a time, a new record, you know, fastest mile, the the
- 27:22the two hour marathon, sub two hour marathon, once someone else
- 27:26does it, I think it like unlocks.
- 27:30I don't know what it unlocks. Maybe belief, you know, maybe
- 27:32it's like you can never get 100% out of yourself ever, just
- 27:36because there's always more. You can just always unlock more.
- 27:39If somebody else ran A15930I can do a 15929.
- 27:43I think it kind of works like that.
- 27:45And so it's taken like really all of these people have worked
- 27:48together over the years to to chip it down.
- 27:51So Jack has the FKT now. In 2021, he ran A338-UP Valley
- 27:56Way, and then he reran it just to increase the time.
- 27:59In 2023, he ran a 331. So that's where the men's is.
- 28:05And then on the woman's side, some of the big names that have
- 28:08run it again, I think there's maybe there's about 10 efforts
- 28:11that have just chipped it, chipped it down over the years.
- 28:14Christina Folsic, obviously a White Mountains legend, Jess
- 28:18Marion, Lydia Gill, Britta Clark, Lindsay Webster, they've
- 28:23just whittled, whittle, whittled.
- 28:24And now Lindsay Webster has the women's FKT.
- 28:27It's 433. She ran it in 2021.
- 28:31But the top three women's time. This is kind of interesting.
- 28:35When I was looking at this in 2020, Britta Clark, who has the
- 28:39Pemi loop FKT, she ran a 437. Then later in 2020, I think it
- 28:44was like a week later. That would be so brutal.
- 28:46You set the number one FKT in the northeast.
- 28:49One week later gone. I think that happened to Will
- 28:52Peterson on his wasn't that elicit to get Gaddesky broke his
- 28:57one of his times the the four case, the four case time
- 29:02supported and then built it smashed it shout out.
- 29:07Anyway after that, in 2020 Jess Marion came along.
- 29:11She ran a 435 shortly after and then in 2021 Lindsay Webster ran
- 29:16a 433. So we have the top three times
- 29:19within 4 minutes of each other, which I think the only people to
- 29:23go sub for on the Prezi for the men's is Jordan and Jack and
- 29:27Jack's at 3:31. So there's a little bit more
- 29:29spacing there, but the women's is any one of, of those women
- 29:34could go back out. I think like this year whenever
- 29:37and, and, and get the FKT and there's a lot of people that
- 29:39probably could, could send it even lower too.
- 29:44So that that's where the, the the full standard route sits
- 29:48right now. I don't know when are we going
- 29:50to get more action on the Prezi. I'll be honest, I, I have no
- 29:56interest in running as fast as I can on the Prezi.
- 30:00I don't know if that makes me soft or not a true trail runner,
- 30:07but I just think to really be pushing yourself redlining for 3
- 30:111/2 hours on that terrain. And like, I know me, the
- 30:16downhills, I really, I think I'm good at the downhill.
- 30:19So I'm like, maybe I'm a good downhill runner.
- 30:21I should go prove it on a technical course.
- 30:23I just don't want to risk it. I, I think, you know, if I'm
- 30:27redlining it harder on the climbs, you can fall so easily
- 30:30and you're moving really, really fast that I don't know, I'm
- 30:34scared. I'm scared.
- 30:35Maybe I'm not a true trail runner.
- 30:37Killian would be, would be horrified if he's here hearing
- 30:40this 331. He won't.
- 30:42I don't know. Also, the time is very fast and
- 30:45maybe that plays into a factor. I'll run a fast Prezi one day,
- 30:48I'll run a fast Prezi one day, but it's definitely just just
- 30:52just a gnarly route. So, so, so anyway, so I think,
- 30:58you know, Jack's time is really, really fast.
- 31:00Lindsay's time is really, really fast.
- 31:02Maybe it's like, man, if I'm, if I'm doing training runs out
- 31:06there taking falls, I think Jack had talked about how he took a
- 31:08couple really nasty falls in training and and I got to go
- 31:13really hard and I probably just miss it anyway.
- 31:16I just don't want to do it. But I do think, I mean, there's,
- 31:19you know, the White Mountains throw down.
- 31:21We'll talk about that towards the end.
- 31:22There are some fast people out here right now.
- 31:24And I eventually it's going to it's going to go down for sure.
- 31:28Just who knows how long It could be five years, could be 10
- 31:30years, but I think it's going to go down eventually.
- 31:36So, so, so I think that's why maybe it hasn't got as much
- 31:39accent as some of the other ones like the the Pemi loop.
- 31:42There's been a handful of people that have gone for the Pemi.
- 31:45Obviously the Whites 100 is getting a lot of hype.
- 31:49The Prezi is just super fast. It's super gnarly and super
- 31:52tough, super tough. So that's where that sits.
- 31:56I want to talk about some of the variations because or no, while
- 32:00we're on it, we'll just go through the splits quick.
- 32:02OK, so we're just going to go through Jack's splits and then
- 32:04we're really we're going to move on.
- 32:05I know we've been talking about the Prezi a lot, but the Prezi's
- 32:07epic the 1st 2 miles, Jack splits mile 1553 gap, mile 26 OO
- 32:15gap and he ran every step on that 331.
- 32:19That is insane. I mean, running a 720 gap,
- 32:23you're probably losing like 3030 seconds to a minute of like what
- 32:27he could have done on just because of the technicality on
- 32:30just the downhills. If you're going 12 minute per
- 32:33mile downhill, your gaps for sure go not going in the right
- 32:36direction, even though that section is super steep, but he
- 32:39just comes out absolutely blazing.
- 32:41He ran 550, yeah, 55, 637 gap all the way up to the Madison
- 32:48summit. So that's the three and a half
- 32:49mile, 3900 feet on Dolly Cop, which is really fast.
- 32:54We talked about the Mad Mad Hut and then from Mad to Washington,
- 32:58he runs a 746 gap, which I think they're 6 miles and 3500 feet of
- 33:03climbing, which is a lot. But I do think that's really
- 33:06slowed down just because of the technicality.
- 33:09His last half mile up to Jefferson, which gets a little
- 33:11bit less technical. You're out of kind of the the
- 33:14muck of some of the northern Prezis.
- 33:15He ran a 649 gap. So I think like his climbs on
- 33:19smooth stuff was probably in that high 6 gap after the first
- 33:23first climb and then and then Washington to Pierce, 5.3 miles,
- 33:281000 feet of climbing is a 738 gap.
- 33:31That's probably just slowing down a little bit kind of
- 33:33technical too. And then his Pierce to three O
- 33:362. So coming down from Pierce, it's
- 33:39like a little over 3 miles. He ran it at a 634 minute per
- 33:43mile pace, which if you know about that trail, Pierce is one
- 33:48of the most hiked 4000 footers. So it's Jackson.
- 33:51Those trails are just so eroded, so many people on them and him
- 33:57running that is is is kind of insane.
- 34:01Yeah, that's kind of insane. So that's the effort.
- 34:04I thought I'd just break down some of his times 'cause it's
- 34:06kind of cool to look at. I'm sure the hardcore trail
- 34:09runners has have looked at a lot of Jacks, White Mountains,
- 34:13Strava files, 'cause they're, they're pretty cool.
- 34:21We'll talk about some of the variations we talked about.
- 34:23Winner Ben Thompson has got that 332 the northbound.
- 34:29So most people go southbound that you have to do this the
- 34:32the, the, the established FKT route southbound.
- 34:39But the northbound time Liam, Liam Davis, he has it at 428 in
- 34:422018 and then Lexie Jackson has a 636 in 23.
- 34:48So I think both of those times are super fast, but I think
- 34:51those could probably come down. They could probably come down,
- 34:54but I think for sure it's slower going northbound.
- 34:58I don't know if you do more climbing or not, but you
- 35:00definitely get more of that technical stuff when you're just
- 35:02demolished. But it's cool that and those
- 35:05have only had a couple goes and but but it's cool that there's
- 35:09sometimes there. So that's another variation.
- 35:12We're going to talk about the double traverse.
- 35:15So some sickos out there like Yo Yos, they say once No2 please.
- 35:21So the supported FKT right now is Larsen Ojala 1039.
- 35:27This is one of Larsen's. I think this is one of I don't
- 35:30know, can I even say it? Larsen has so many crazy
- 35:32efforts. His Monadnock repeat at a 24
- 35:36hour is crazy. I think it's 18.
- 35:39His obviously New Hampshire AT is is crazy.
- 35:42He's done a lot of stuff. One of the only whites 100
- 35:46finishers. That's I mean that his whites
- 35:49100 actually may be his best effort.
- 35:52That was crazy. I think he went a little over 30
- 35:54and I think he was running with somebody else on it.
- 35:56So it's like you never maximize yourself.
- 35:58That was a really good one. But he had a 1039 on that.
- 36:02That is super fast. I remember seeing him do that
- 36:05thinking like, Dang, that he's moving.
- 36:07He's sure footed. We've we've learned that on the
- 36:10podcast. He is sure footed and for sure.
- 36:12I mean those Monadnock guys have to be.
- 36:14So he has a supported and then Josh Burns 1128 unsupported.
- 36:19So that's carrying you all your own food you're still getting
- 36:22from the water from the Hut. So most of your weights already,
- 36:26you know, supplied by the huts and the Prezis.
- 36:28That's still good. And then the women's
- 36:29unsupported. I don't think there's a
- 36:31supported time. Lexi Jackson 1334 So you know,
- 36:35that's fast. OK, so that's the double S
- 36:39traverse and then we're getting crafty.
- 36:41All you bike heads out there or a cross, cross training heads,
- 36:49hybrid athletes picnic. The Prezi picnic has had some
- 36:54really good times on him. So Keith Naidu, a new New
- 36:58England legend, he set it the mark in seven O 7.
- 37:02Don't know what year, don't have the year share, but he did it in
- 37:04seven O 7. And then Pierre Pennoyer, crazy
- 37:07fitness, good on a bike, good uphill, good everywhere, six O
- 37:121. And then Joshua Reed, a New York
- 37:16guy, I think he's buddies with Steve Lang when they come out
- 37:19here, be on watch. He ran a 545 on the Prezi
- 37:24Picnic. So this is a good Prezi picnic
- 37:26times. And in the women's, I think
- 37:28there might be only one time, but Lexi Jackson goes seven O 1.
- 37:32So she beat Keith's time. I don't think she's huge.
- 37:36You know, she didn't do as much biking.
- 37:38She's I think she's incorporated some in, but you know that
- 37:41running is fast and she also crushed on the bike.
- 37:45So that's that time is super fast.
- 37:48So that that is like the Prezi, the Prezi talk.
- 37:52A couple other things. I think about the Prezi one, the
- 37:56weather is just really, really important.
- 37:59I think a good day can make all the difference.
- 38:02Dry for sure. You need dry wind.
- 38:06I think if it's super windy, you're it's, you're going to
- 38:08feel it. And then if it's a weekday,
- 38:10you're going to be passing people, which it slows you down
- 38:15for sure. So those are a few of the other
- 38:17things that I think about on the Prezi.
- 38:20And we talked about the trails changing.
- 38:21So I guess we'll, we'll, I'll, I'll get into this a little bit
- 38:25more. So we're going to go into the
- 38:26next subject here. Trails and races changing over
- 38:30time. I remember, and this is a big,
- 38:34this has been a Big Jack podcast, but I mean, he really
- 38:37took the White Mountains by storm.
- 38:39He said like he was a guy who didn't do it.
- 38:42He did at some race at the beginning, but then he did a lot
- 38:45of FKTS and he thought FKTS stood the test of time longer
- 38:50because race courses can change, right?
- 38:54And you never know year by year, like a hot year versus a cold
- 38:58year, who knows who's been the race, who's not in the race.
- 39:01Maybe you can get pushed by somebody.
- 39:02But FKCS are more long standing. I, I agree with that 100%.
- 39:08But I do think in the White Mountains, it's getting to the
- 39:11point where they are longer standing, but I don't think
- 39:16they're long standing because you can just these flooding
- 39:22events that are happening, the more intense rainstorms in a
- 39:26shorter period of time and the the popularity of the trails
- 39:30increasing, especially on the four KS, like some of the prime
- 39:33routes. The AT, obviously the AT is
- 39:35always getting more popular. The erosion is getting bad.
- 39:39It's getting really bad. They're talking about shutting
- 39:42down some of the big trails up there.
- 39:45I know that for a fact. So they're getting worse.
- 39:49It's almost like if you need to get a big FKT in the White
- 39:52Mountains, you got to go soon. You know, I don't know if that
- 39:55really holds true, but I would, I would not advise waiting five
- 39:59years, you know, and I think maybe that's kind of, it's kind
- 40:02of what you, I don't know, I don't think you planned it like
- 40:04this. But you know, he just has
- 40:07everything. So he Jack came and hit a lot of
- 40:09them. But the trails are getting more
- 40:11technical over time I think. Trail work has been really,
- 40:17really good. Like, you know, there's a ton of
- 40:19people doing trail work trying to maintain the trails.
- 40:22So that's awesome. But when you get these crazy
- 40:24intense storms, a ton of water just surging down, some of them
- 40:28go. So if if like the Pemi loop this
- 40:32year, getting that Lincoln Woods trail shut down, it's going to
- 40:36be shut down for a year and then it's going to reopen.
- 40:38But let's say the Pemi Lincoln Woods is no longer you can't use
- 40:43it. What happens at the time?
- 40:45I guess they're just set in stone because there's not going
- 40:48to be or they cut a, you know, another trail and that's just
- 40:51going to be way smoother. So I think a lot of things are
- 40:55changing and one of the ones old bridle path, they did a
- 41:00fantastic job on like 1/2 mile on that on that path and it's
- 41:05going to be so smooth compared to what it was right before that
- 41:08trail work. So if you're running like a
- 41:11Frank Ridge time trial in summer, I think you're gaining
- 41:15from that so that it's actually they can get better.
- 41:18But I think the problem is it takes so much effort for a lot
- 41:22of these trails that you can do small sections.
- 41:24Like think about it, the Frank Loop is one of the most popular
- 41:28trail heads and hikes. And it took years and they just
- 41:32did a half mile and they made it really nice.
- 41:34But you can't do the whole mountain, you know.
- 41:36So some of these trails, the Garfield Ridge Trail, right?
- 41:39They're, I don't know, maybe one day, but it doesn't seem
- 41:43plausible to really do a ton of work on those trails.
- 41:47So they're just going to keep getting rockier, rockier,
- 41:49rockier, I think. And I mean, honestly, once you
- 41:53get up into the Prezis, the Prezis are the Prezis going up.
- 41:57I just pit everyone didn't even see that I shouldn't, I
- 41:59shouldn't even say said anything.
- 42:00It almost landed on my lens. I look at my iPhone lens and
- 42:04there's three things and I'm like, I actually don't know
- 42:06which one I should be looking at or which one is useful.
- 42:08But sometimes there's a dust on one.
- 42:10But I'm like, should I wipe it off?
- 42:11Probably should, yeah. So, so like some of these shows
- 42:17you're not going to get to. But then, you know, once you get
- 42:20up to Madison and the Prezis, the Prezis are exposed.
- 42:23So anything exposed is that's pretty much what it's going to
- 42:26be for the next. You know, if it's just rock,
- 42:27it's just rock. So those were kind of some
- 42:31things to think about. You know, race is kind of
- 42:33changing races. I I see it too.
- 42:36Like I always hate when a, when a race, I don't know, it stinks
- 42:39like a hellbender in Asheville, NC had a major race change after
- 42:44the storm that I'm sure they couldn't really control as much,
- 42:47you know, and that kind of alters the time made it, made it
- 42:51faster, made it easier. The Jigger Johnson 100, the
- 42:54Kerrigan Rd. getting shut down made that course easier, faster.
- 42:58And I, I just feel like you're seeing more of the, the intense.
- 43:01I mean, I, I am an environmental engineer.
- 43:06The data is showing that there are more intense storms
- 43:09happening over shorter periods of time.
- 43:11And so you just have these storm surges that that do way more
- 43:14damage than spaced out rain would do.
- 43:17So I think it's going to keep getting worse and hopefully we
- 43:20don't have anything crazy like Asheville, but who knows, who
- 43:24knows? I feel like New England's fairly
- 43:26safe, but I don't know who knows.
- 43:28So, so anyway, that's, that's kind of the, the Prezi
- 43:32breakdown. Hopefully you guys liked it.
- 43:33If you liked it, I'll do some of the other ones.
- 43:35I want to do the Hutch reverse. I, I kind of did the Pemi loop
- 43:38once before. I want to do White Mountains
- 43:41100. We could just do all the, all
- 43:43the big routes and maybe over time, you know, maybe doing a
- 43:48little more research, maybe pulling some quotes, maybe
- 43:51getting some more people that have been on these routes for
- 43:54longer to, to chime in. We can we can really make these
- 43:57segments good. I got a moose story on Tecumseh.
- 44:02We'll do that. Tecumseh.
- 44:04I did a double on Tecumseh today.
- 44:06The trail was awesome. No snow.
- 44:08It's a little blow that you know, there was some trail
- 44:10scraps. You know, most of the blow downs
- 44:13were kind of trimmed up. I just feel like the trails this
- 44:15time of year sometimes, like there's some, you know, limbs
- 44:17and stuff still down but great conditions.
- 44:22Love running on rock. Huge, huge fan.
- 44:25But something happened on the Tecumseh today that which I have
- 44:30never seen before. So in between the kind of that
- 44:34little dip before you get to the summit from the backside, there
- 44:38was like a A506070 foot stretch of moose poop, more moose poop
- 44:48than I've ever seen in my entire entire life on any trail
- 44:54anywhere. It was all confined to 50 feet.
- 45:00OK, so more volume of moose poop just in 50 feet.
- 45:04I have a video. I might even post it on my
- 45:05Instagram. I don't know what was going on.
- 45:09I think a moose must have got hurt.
- 45:12That's the only thing that I can think of.
- 45:14A moose must have got hurt and couldn't move and was just there
- 45:17for days. I don't know.
- 45:19Did anyone see this moose? How did I not see this moose?
- 45:21It was shocking the amount of moose poop.
- 45:24And they were all smaller pellets.
- 45:26So it seemed to me like it was a calf moose, you know, like a
- 45:32like an adolescent juvenile moose that it's like got lost.
- 45:40But no, if it got lost, it wouldn't just stay in one spot.
- 45:42You know, that's like that'd be like they'd have to be trained
- 45:45in search and rescue to not get off the trail.
- 45:48It was shocking to me. I don't know what happened.
- 45:50If anyone saw it, knows about it.
- 45:53Maybe I missed like a big, you know, moose story this winter.
- 45:56I don't know, but it is we literally blowing my mind.
- 45:59So that was kind of like a a weird thing today.
- 46:02But the trails Memorial Day weekend, they're popping right
- 46:05now. They're popping and trail
- 46:06season's here. OK, we're going to go into my
- 46:11top three shows. We're going to go into my top
- 46:15three shows and then we're going to finish with the race results,
- 46:18race previews and my pinky story, my toast story.
- 46:22I I like watching TVI don't know.
- 46:26I go through, you know, I like everyone.
- 46:28You go through spurts of binging and you're like, ah, no, I'm
- 46:32binging too much. I shouldn't watch.
- 46:33But I've recently been on a Seinfeld kick, watching Seinfeld
- 46:38through, I mean, loosely watching it through just putting
- 46:41it on. You know, there's not, you know,
- 46:43you can kind of watch wherever. But after watching it every
- 46:49every couple episodes, I am watching this show just being
- 46:53like this, this is, this is it's so good.
- 46:58It is so good. It's every episode has something
- 47:02you can relate to. There are so many clean jokes
- 47:07and storylines that come together.
- 47:09You got good punch lines, you got good characters, just such a
- 47:13good show. So we're going to rank the shows
- 47:15and I guess I'll just spoil it. Seinfeld is number 1.
- 47:18I think that is my favorite show of all time.
- 47:22It is so good. Kramer's my favorite character.
- 47:25Kramer is my favorite character. Kramer is my favorite character.
- 47:30Do I want to do some Kramer right now?
- 47:32No, I don't know. I don't know if I could do it.
- 47:34I woke up in the Hudson River. No, I can't do a Kramer right
- 47:37now, but Kramer is hilarious. I wish that I lived next to a
- 47:40Kramer so bad. I actually have a friend.
- 47:43I always tell him I have a friend that is so similar to
- 47:47Kramer and and more in just the ways of like he's always
- 47:52scheming something up. He's always got a new scheme,
- 47:54like, hey, Woj, I tell you about I've been doing this recently,
- 47:58right? And he tells you you're like, Oh
- 48:00my God, what are you doing? He's kind of got a little bit of
- 48:04the kind of the look or maybe the mannerisms.
- 48:06He's well connected. Like he knows everybody's got a
- 48:09guy for everybody and he just says funny, kind of unhinged
- 48:13stuff. Kramer's my favorite character.
- 48:16By far. My next favorite character is
- 48:19Jerry. I I mean, obviously he's a main
- 48:22character. I think Jerry is just a good
- 48:25character. Obviously he's a comedian, so
- 48:27he's not like the level up acting, but I think he's a good
- 48:30actor. He's got good clean stuff.
- 48:32I like his. I always say this to Jocelyn.
- 48:35I like his style. He's always got a good style.
- 48:37He's got the kind of the tighter jeans with the nice shirt.
- 48:40I always say like, I wish I could look like Jerry, but I
- 48:42just look like Kramer when I I'm a little bit just taller and
- 48:45blocked like I don't know, my I don't know.
- 48:48I'm like, I wish, you know, Jerry's got some swag.
- 48:52He's really funny. And then probably Next up, I
- 48:55don't know. I love doing the Newman laugh.
- 48:57I hate Newman. Like Newton is such a good
- 49:00character. He's such a good character, but
- 49:04I, I, I love doing the Newman laugh and Jocelyn hates it.
- 49:08No, I can't do it. I can't do it.
- 49:11I can't do it. He's super funny, but he's not
- 49:14one of my favorite characters. I, I, I'm on team Jerry.
- 49:17Obviously, my third favorite character would probably be I
- 49:23don't know. I don't know.
- 49:28I guess it would be Elaine. I don't know.
- 49:33She's good. She, you know, she's great.
- 49:35She's great. Some of her are really good.
- 49:37I don't like this thing. Here's one of you're bold.
- 49:44Those are two ones. You don't see the irony here,
- 49:47George? She's bold.
- 49:49I'm doing this scene in reverse. She's bold.
- 49:52Bald, bald, bald, bold. Shout out, Jocelyn.
- 49:56You can rock bald. You're complaining about a woman
- 50:01being bald. So you're bald.
- 50:07I don't like this thing. It was when he she, he was
- 50:10wearing the wig. So she can be pretty good.
- 50:12She's a really good actor, George.
- 50:15Also, I don't like him as much. I think he's kind of annoying,
- 50:18but he doesn't make me laugh sometimes.
- 50:20He is such a good actor. Such a good actor.
- 50:24Yeah, he's really, really good. I would, you know, they're all
- 50:27up there, right? All the main characters are just
- 50:29so good. This is why the show was iconic.
- 50:31So that is my number one favorite TV show of all time.
- 50:35We didn't do it in reverse. We just gave it to you #2 The
- 50:38Office. Oh my gosh, I haven't watched
- 50:41The Office in a while. The Office is so good, so funny,
- 50:46and these are more like, I don't know, I'm kind of like thinking
- 50:48like I guess these are funnier shows.
- 50:49So I have a non funny show in here.
- 50:51It's hard to do just top shows ever and I haven't seen every
- 50:54show but the office so again, just so, so funny.
- 50:59It's so relatable to, I always say like, I wish that I live.
- 51:04I had a, you know, friends and I had a life that was like had the
- 51:07same things going on as like the officer.
- 51:10I wish I had Jim's job. I wish I had Jerry's life.
- 51:13Right. Like you just kind of wish you
- 51:14had these characters and these funny things going all the time
- 51:17and you just took nothing, you know, serious.
- 51:18You could just always be at the coffee shop.
- 51:22But yeah, The Office is number 2.
- 51:24So like one of the, it's, I think it's for sure funnier than
- 51:27Seinfeld, but I think Seinfeld is a better, I, I would say it's
- 51:31a better show. And that's who knows #3 This was
- 51:36kind of like, I don't know. I did a little bit of
- 51:38researching to make sure I didn't miss anything big #3 I
- 51:41don't know if I got influences 'cause I haven't seen it in a
- 51:44while and I think I wanted a different genre #3 I'm going to
- 51:47go Breaking Bad. I remember when I got into
- 51:50Breaking Bad, it was just every, I just watched it all the time.
- 51:53It was really good. Obviously less of a comedy, some
- 51:57comedy in there a little bit, but just an awesome show.
- 52:01I don't know, just an awesome show.
- 52:03Walter White is iconic. Lots of I, I think that shows
- 52:07like all the seasons were so good.
- 52:11It was just a great show. So that's my number one, number
- 52:15one, two and three. Seinfeld, Office and Breaking
- 52:17Bad, 3 honorable mentions. I feel like I should only say 2
- 52:22of them. I really feel like I should only
- 52:24say two of them strongly. But we are at the end of the
- 52:28episode so it's only hardcore listeners.
- 52:32We're going to go New Girl. New Girl makes me laugh.
- 52:36Schmidt makes me die laughing. If I could.
- 52:39OK, here's the graph. Here's my graph of the the three
- 52:42boy characters. I think they're the funniest in
- 52:45New Girl. I think it is if if it Oh,
- 52:51you're going to see it the other way.
- 52:51OK, this is actually a good move.
- 52:53I think initially, and I guess we'll we'll we'll have to do
- 52:57point a point graph and then you're going to have to make the
- 52:59lines here. People at the bottom hated
- 53:02Schmidt the first couple episodes.
- 53:04Who is this guy? Kind of like just an ass D baggy
- 53:07kind of you don't like Schmidt, don't like Schmidt.
- 53:11Nick is funny. You kind of like don't know his
- 53:13vibe, kind of a funny And then Winston.
- 53:15No, this was like coach was in there for the first couple, but
- 53:17then Winston, we'll just put Winston.
- 53:20It was like Schmidt, Winston and then Nick.
- 53:25Nick's kind of funny, pretty good, you know, OK.
- 53:28And then after that first season, Schmidt just has an
- 53:31ascent where he is my favorite. Just saying so, so funny, saying
- 53:37just hilarious things being outrageous.
- 53:40He goes up. Nick also climbing, not as
- 53:42sharp, also climbing more of like a steady, kind of like a
- 53:46blue chip stock as opposed to a, a parabolic move.
- 53:49And then Winston just down low kind of in the muck.
- 53:53I don't know, just in the muck. Then you get into kind of like
- 53:56season 3 and 4 and you get a little too much Schmidt.
- 54:00Schmidt starts coming down when he's trying to break up Jess and
- 54:02Nick. So I don't know when he gets ACC
- 54:04just like he's not hitting as hard for me, he's kind of going
- 54:06down. Nick is solid, solid paying
- 54:09dividends. Still blue chip stock.
- 54:11Winston is slowly rising. He's getting the biggest laughs,
- 54:15the biggest laughs out of me as it goes on.
- 54:18Like initially his pranks being kind of crazy is like this is
- 54:21kind of stupid. But at the end, his pranks are
- 54:24just hilarious and and everything he just gets funnier,
- 54:27funnier. Like I think they all kind of
- 54:28found their character, but so, so yeah.
- 54:33So in the middle, I think it's Winston, Nick and Schmidt, and
- 54:39then it's Winston, Nick, Schmidt and Nick and doing the points
- 54:44for you guys. And then it is I can't is it
- 54:48Schmidt bottom at the at the end of the no, I don't know.
- 54:51It's like they all tied. It's like they all tied you like
- 54:54them all. They all make me crack up.
- 54:55Sometimes they're annoying, sometimes they're not.
- 54:57But that's an honorable mention. New Girl.
- 55:01I'm going to I'm just going to I'm going to say it.
- 55:03Honestly, this one I'm not even embarrassed about.
- 55:05There's just one that I'm slightly embarrassed about.
- 55:07But and now it's like, Ed, you got to tell us.
- 55:08I'll tell you guys if you stick around SpongeBob showing my age,
- 55:14showing my age here. I'm 28.
- 55:17I'm not really young though. I'm not really like super young.
- 55:21But SpongeBob was just an all time show.
- 55:24I feel like I, I, I more see clips from it, like I haven't
- 55:29watched a good SpongeBob episode.
- 55:30I feel like I tried to and then I was like, yeah, it doesn't hit
- 55:32as much obviously as your kid. Kid is funny, but like the old,
- 55:37the first few seasons of SpongeBob, like the old school
- 55:40SpongeBob episodes, they're kind of like that Seinfeld, like
- 55:44they're just so good. They're so funny.
- 55:47And I've seen some clips pop up on my Instagram.
- 55:49Maybe I'm just getting like fed good SpongeBob clips, but that's
- 55:52in there. And then the last one not
- 55:55honestly, I'm thinking about it now like Spongebob's iconic.
- 55:59A whole generation of people may say it's one of the best
- 56:02cartoons. I was never a big Simpsons
- 56:05person. Like I know that one's really
- 56:07big big, but I was never big on Simpsons.
- 56:10So we'll we'll go with SpongeBob.
- 56:11The other one I have, which honestly, I'm going to cross
- 56:13off. I just visually cross it off.
- 56:15So it's not on my list, guys, but I initially was thinking
- 56:18Avatar the Last Airbender in a different realm of what is that
- 56:24anime is that I think it is anime.
- 56:27I don't really know what anime is, but it could be.
- 56:30I think that show's good. OK, we're getting to the end
- 56:33here. We're wrapping up.
- 56:37I like to just slowly, let's just see if we're still going
- 56:41here. Oh, man, this is in oh, that's
- 56:46my arm. Yeah, that's my arm.
- 56:47That's my arm. It's like, this is insane.
- 56:49Don't do anything crazy. I'm in my short shorts.
- 56:51I mean, some of these I just are doing after runs.
- 56:54So I'm just wearing what I'm wearing and I look how I look.
- 56:57Some, some people like, I feel like when they, they know
- 57:00they're going to be on a video podcast will maybe like be like
- 57:03I, I some of these I just do after a run in my truck all
- 57:06dirty. I got dirt everywhere, whatever.
- 57:11We had a big mix up last week, a horrible tragedy, a horrible mix
- 57:15up. I somehow read the 2021 wah
- 57:18packing back results for the 21 Miller.
- 57:21No, the 2025 results for the 21 Miller.
- 57:25I messed it all up. Horrible.
- 57:29The wah packing back results go here.
- 57:32This is like, I don't know how to make it up to these people.
- 57:34I don't know, don't say anything crazy.
- 57:39Andrew #1 Travis Mahonin goes back three O 123.
- 57:43I believe it was like 7 seconds from the course record.
- 57:48He is just a savage. Every year the Mahuen brothers
- 57:53just go and just destroy that trail.
- 57:55He came in first. I think I had him first last
- 57:58week, but would give him the better time.
- 58:00Second pace Steeg, Steeg Bertram 332 and then third place Phil
- 58:06Karsha 349. So it's a stacked podium.
- 58:10Stacked. Travis Steve Travis is like just
- 58:13an absolute slugger. Steeg is a slugger, young gun.
- 58:16He's going to be so freaking fast.
- 58:18And then Phil Karsha is like everyone knows him.
- 58:20He's just does tons of projects. So big names in that walk back
- 58:24and back, 123 and then a woman's side, Laura Matheson, four O 7,
- 58:29she wins it. Lorena Duquencic messed it up,
- 58:33439. And then Elisha Hogson, 458,
- 58:38third place. So that's a walk back and back
- 58:402021 results. I can't believe it sometimes.
- 58:44Like I, I, you know, I've put a wrong picture in the race
- 58:47previews. I've said wrong results before.
- 58:51It it is a stress on me. I think I, I just, my brain
- 58:57sometimes makes big mistakes, guys.
- 58:59That's all I can say. It just makes mistakes,
- 59:01especially when I'm like going through and grabbing a bunch of
- 59:03things. It goes so fast.
- 59:04But I don't know so any who it is what it is.
- 59:10I I talked a little bit about this last week.
- 59:12The last week's race results section section segment wasn't
- 59:15good. A couple of people texted me and
- 59:17were like, I was laughing at you just being all over the place,
- 59:20but also suggested help or suggested ways to improve it.
- 59:24And so I think that speaks to itself.
- 59:27I was frazzled. I'm getting a better system.
- 59:30It's not fully when I have a printed sheet that is when my
- 59:33system is I have a printer now I need ink.
- 59:37So we're working on it. But I think maybe I took a
- 59:41little bit to heart like the Northeast trail scene.
- 59:44I had this big spreadsheet of all the races because I want to
- 59:46start covering all the races. I actually like the learning
- 59:49about all the races, but I as far as like good podcasting and
- 59:53I don't think some of these races even want me talking about
- 59:56them. They're like, hey man, we do our
- 59:57own kind of small thing. I don't know.
- 59:59Run mountain peak, do your thing again, this is.
- 1:00:03I want to focus on the North East trail scene, the mountain
- 1:00:07stuff. So it's like if I miss some flat
- 1:00:09races, like, I don't know. So that being said, I'm not
- 1:00:13going to promise. I think maybe I just kind of put
- 1:00:16myself in a box where I didn't need to put myself.
- 1:00:18I'm not going to promise to highlight every race and every
- 1:00:23FKT, you know, in New England moving forward.
- 1:00:28I'm going to still look at all the races, kind of get some
- 1:00:30info, but I'm just going to bring you some of maybe the
- 1:00:32biggest ones, definitely all the big mountain ones for sure.
- 1:00:36And and that's that. Maybe I still do those Instagram
- 1:00:39previews like the races, if people like that, but we won't
- 1:00:43talk about them. And me being like, oh, no one
- 1:00:47covers the Northeast trail scene.
- 1:00:48People do Mass ultra.com has almost every ultra marathon race
- 1:00:54results posted. It's not a podcast format, so
- 1:00:58it's not like, but but it's something you can go and read.
- 1:01:01So I'm I'm go to massultra.com. They probably hear me talking
- 1:01:06about they're like, I've been doing this thing for a long
- 1:01:08time. You're a new who you think you
- 1:01:10are. I am.
- 1:01:13Who do you think you are? Am they post all the results?
- 1:01:17So I'm going to talk about the things I want to talk about.
- 1:01:19Still highlight as much people, but keep it a little bit
- 1:01:22tightened up a little bit. That being said, a few races I
- 1:01:27want to highlight race results this week.
- 1:01:30The Free Spirit 50K, Kayla Lamp wins it by a mile.
- 1:01:35She ran a 338 second place. She will overall talk about
- 1:01:39females overall winning. She runs A3387-O2 pace for the
- 1:01:4350K. She crushed that.
- 1:01:46And then Jacob Valcap, he ran A418820 pace 40 minutes behind
- 1:01:52her. He wins for the men and won.
- 1:01:54But Kayla, holy smokes, she killed that race.
- 1:01:58And then another race I want to talk about was the run.
- 1:02:02This was the CT trail mixers run ragged.
- 1:02:05Last man standing. Last man standing races have
- 1:02:08gotten some buzz with two things to talk about.
- 1:02:12The first thing is new course record 121 miles, but it's a
- 1:02:16tie. Korin Kwasnik and Matt
- 1:02:20Twitchell, they both tied at 121 hours.
- 1:02:23They set a new course record. First off, Korin Kwasnik, I just
- 1:02:28want to say he ran mid state super, super fast.
- 1:02:31He's we we talked about he has the pemedential overall FKT on
- 1:02:34that unsupported stud. He won the mid state massive.
- 1:02:39Like I don't know if he has the course record.
- 1:02:41He he did he do Vermont 100. He he super fast and he's very,
- 1:02:46he's done some some mountain stuff and some flats, some big
- 1:02:49races. I would have assumed Korn
- 1:02:52Kwosnick was maybe a maybe a high school or a high school
- 1:02:57college track guy or cross country guy, super fast, right.
- 1:03:02And he's just, you know, maybe more of a flat guy And I, I
- 1:03:06don't know, maybe this is not, I mean this in the the, the best
- 1:03:09way. I would assume that he's kind of
- 1:03:11a lifelong runner almost because he just puts down crazy times.
- 1:03:15The dude is not your typical running profile.
- 1:03:20He is jacked guys. He is a massive.
- 1:03:25I was like, holy crap, this guy is this fast and I lifted for a
- 1:03:31long time. That's like the utmost.
- 1:03:33I wish I was just jacked and could be super fast.
- 1:03:36He's jacked. So I thought that was a good, a
- 1:03:40good little thing. So I'm just trying to highlight
- 1:03:42that. And then yeah, they tied for the
- 1:03:44last man standing, which I would assume that like a Corin his
- 1:03:51type like this Jack, like almost like probably just mentally so
- 1:03:55strong, can't be broken, can't be beaten kind of guys.
- 1:04:02I was surprised that they would tie.
- 1:04:04And I thought that it would be like maybe they both got hurt on
- 1:04:07one lap or whatever. But I think the course said like
- 1:04:09they were just didn't want to go up for another rat lap.
- 1:04:12And so, hey, that's actually kind of like a is that a, is
- 1:04:16that a a game in the system? You just both win.
- 1:04:19Hey, we don't have to do another lap.
- 1:04:21We don't have to have a suffer lap.
- 1:04:22If I don't know what do I like more, though?
- 1:04:24I can't believe one of them didn't step up and just go do
- 1:04:27another lap. But it's almost like in my head
- 1:04:29actually, it's kind of like, would it have been mean?
- 1:04:32Because now they both won, they both have the course record.
- 1:04:35Is it mean of one of them to be like, I don't want to go out And
- 1:04:38then the other guy says I don't want to go out.
- 1:04:39And then he's like, all right, well, I'll do one if you're
- 1:04:41done. Like his head almost mean.
- 1:04:43I don't know. But anyway, I wanted to
- 1:04:47highlight that race. I thought that was good.
- 1:04:50And then we'll end it with a motivation minute today.
- 1:04:54This is going to be tied into my toe story.
- 1:04:57I, I, I had AAAI, had a big toe. I'm having a big toe, big toe
- 1:05:04flared up out of nowhere, insane pain.
- 1:05:08Anytime I'm flexing it, walking insane pain.
- 1:05:12I'm walking around like at work for three days just limping
- 1:05:16because it hurts so bad. And I'm thinking, I don't even
- 1:05:17know. I kind of know what happened,
- 1:05:20but there was no injury. It just hours after the fact,
- 1:05:23two different separate occasions, it just starts
- 1:05:26screaming at me. So a little bit of a panic.
- 1:05:30I mean I had APT. So I have APT that I go to.
- 1:05:36He's been helping me out with the ankle.
- 1:05:38I got in to see him for for the big toe.
- 1:05:41So I had APT that kind of like knew that knows me that can work
- 1:05:45with me. Went and saw him and we we went
- 1:05:49through it all and we got to kind of figured out, you know, I
- 1:05:52just need to really deflare it and it's just like don't bend
- 1:05:56it. So he was like, you know, if
- 1:05:58walking it cause 'cause some of the up hit like I was doing
- 1:06:02Stairmaster to try to work through it and it was kind of
- 1:06:03fine. It would, you know, warm up and
- 1:06:06be fine. Andrew, there's no motivation in
- 1:06:09this. It's coming.
- 1:06:12It would kind of be fine. And then when I'm walking later,
- 1:06:17it'd be, it would be like so painful.
- 1:06:19She was like, all right, The the big toe is really hard because
- 1:06:22you use it and everything. That's the problem with these
- 1:06:25big toes. Like when you hear a turf toe,
- 1:06:27it's not turf toe, which is good.
- 1:06:30I I don't really know what turf toe is.
- 1:06:32So maybe I think it's not turf toe.
- 1:06:35It's going to be fine. But The thing is you're, you're
- 1:06:37just, I'm just aggravating it every time that I step.
- 1:06:40So just doing some a little bit of mobility to kind of take off
- 1:06:44pressure on that, the big toe itself.
- 1:06:47And then he was like, you know, you're probably better off
- 1:06:50wearing shoes than walking barefoot, like around your
- 1:06:52house. And if you have like a curved
- 1:06:54rocker super shoes, wear those. I'm so I'm like, I'm just going
- 1:06:59to be going to work in super shoes.
- 1:07:01Can I even do this? I'm like, I don't want to put
- 1:07:03miles on these shoes. Like I need these shoes for so
- 1:07:09so I'm just going to be walking around around super shoes.
- 1:07:11The toe should be OK, but but the the moral of the story is if
- 1:07:16you have something, go to a professional because I was
- 1:07:18literally like this is I don't know what I did, but I just
- 1:07:20screwed my entire June racing up.
- 1:07:23You're done, you're done. This is horrible.
- 1:07:25I I can't believe this, but I didn't go see a professional.
- 1:07:28They know what they're doing. When I had my ankle, he helped
- 1:07:30me out. And yeah, I would just say if
- 1:07:35you're having issues, one thing that I actually like to to think
- 1:07:38about, I had this big cut on my hand because I took a fall, you
- 1:07:43know, maybe a month ago, and I had these really big cuts in my
- 1:07:46hand and they healed up. So if you can see that when I
- 1:07:50see wounds heal up, I think to myself, my body can, my body can
- 1:07:56heal itself. If you have an injury that's
- 1:07:58like not going away, just cut your no, don't cut yourself, cut
- 1:08:03yourself and then see the power that no, you're OK.
- 1:08:06Your body is healing itself. It's just going to take time.
- 1:08:08You got to figure it out. Go get some some professional
- 1:08:11help and for APT for especially something nagging for a long
- 1:08:14time or something you know, really that's popped up that you
- 1:08:17have no clue. Go get help.
- 1:08:19But the motivation is the more I got to struggle is the more I
- 1:08:23gain. This is J.
- 1:08:25Cole quote. I might have done this
- 1:08:26motivation minute before. I don't care.
- 1:08:28I'm bringing it back. It is just a quote that
- 1:08:31everything hard in my life for every set back that I've been
- 1:08:35having in the last year, I've had a year or two, maybe I've
- 1:08:38had like a lot of them. I just that is the one thing
- 1:08:43that I think about where I don't know how this is helping me.
- 1:08:46Like I, I thought, you know, I've learned so many lessons.
- 1:08:50How can I still be learning lesson, new lessons?
- 1:08:53This is annoying. Let me just, you know, do what I
- 1:08:57meant to do. But I think it's true.
- 1:09:01I think the more you struggle, in the end you are going to gain
- 1:09:07from it. And I don't.
- 1:09:08It's like, yeah, you gain lessons, you gain knowledge, you
- 1:09:10gain resilience. But I think it's even more than
- 1:09:13that. There's something to overcoming
- 1:09:18obstacles over and over and over that I think it just, it just
- 1:09:24makes for a hire. It's like you're, it almost is
- 1:09:27like you're building your base. They always say like base
- 1:09:29building for running and then base building for a, for like a,
- 1:09:33you know, if you're building a house or whatever, it's like
- 1:09:35you, you want to build a big base, you want to stack these
- 1:09:38bricks, build this base. It's almost like everything in
- 1:09:43life, every set back is a, is a chance to build your base bigger
- 1:09:47and go higher. I don't know, you know, it's
- 1:09:50like Andrew, you've never broken your femur.
- 1:09:52You've never, you know, I guess I haven't, but you know, I
- 1:09:56haven't. I don't know.
- 1:09:57But it just, if it doesn't kill you, if it doesn't severely
- 1:10:02dismantle you, I think it's going to make you stronger, even
- 1:10:07if it's at the worst time, even if it's the most annoying thing,
- 1:10:09even if you've already learned a lot of lessons, even if you
- 1:10:12don't know why you can't just have, you know, something go
- 1:10:16smoothly, it's going to help you.
- 1:10:18And so that's what I'm kind of leaning into.
- 1:10:20And hopefully the toe's good and I'm all good.
- 1:10:22And this is just going to make me stronger.
- 1:10:24So if you're struggling, good. Sometimes I sometimes I there
- 1:10:29was one run that I I was like raining and I was alone, but I
- 1:10:34was on a training run and it was just like raining out of
- 1:10:37nowhere. I was having a bad day and you
- 1:10:38know that the Jocko Willink like good.
- 1:10:41You know you broke your ankle. Good get better.
- 1:10:45You didn't get the raise. Good.
- 1:10:48Do more. Oh, your wife left.
- 1:10:51Yeah. I don't know why they good get
- 1:10:54in a get a better. I don't know.
- 1:10:55This is I need to now I'm going to keep that in.
- 1:10:57I don't know why that, but he just said any bad situation
- 1:11:00good, it's going to make you more resilient.
- 1:11:04I did a little bit of a trail running twist where it started
- 1:11:07running and I just was saying good, good.
- 1:11:11I was just saying in a goofy voice raining good.
- 1:11:16You're not hitting your split good harder than you thought
- 1:11:19good. Heart rate higher than you want
- 1:11:20it to be good. So good.
- 1:11:23Hopefully you're struggling out there because I want you to
- 1:11:27reach insane peaks, but that's it for this week.
- 1:11:31All right, this was a this was a throwback episode.
- 1:11:33Hope you guys liked it. If if this episode bombs, it's
- 1:11:37like Andrew, you need to do you need to do real topics, but I
- 1:11:41don't like to all the time. So there you go.
- 1:11:44But all right, trail season's here.
- 1:11:45Hope you guys had a good a long weekend and you got on some
- 1:11:49trails because running on rocks. It's like if I don't go there
- 1:11:53for a few weeks, I just I can't explain it and I'm not really a
- 1:11:56person that gets super. I it's I'm not like a very I
- 1:12:04don't know, like I wouldn't say like I need it for my soul.
- 1:12:07That wouldn't be something that I would say.
- 1:12:09But I just get this itch after a couple weeks of not being up
- 1:12:14high in the mountains where it's like I need I need to go back.
- 1:12:17So I went back. Hopefully you guys are back.
- 1:12:19We'll see you next week. Peace.
