[SPEAKER_03]: This week, we are speaking with Jenny Weinblum, Vice President Live Entertainment, Disney Signature experiences, which is just a big ol' LinkedIn corporate title for a Jenny knows so much about what makes theater and immersion and experiences good, and we now all get to benefit from that because she works at Disney.

[SPEAKER_03]: This interview really feels like peeking behind the curtain of how Disney cruise lines creative team and entertainment team decide on what experiences to bring us.

[SPEAKER_03]: When you learn where they held their first charrette, which is a fancy Disney term for basically a big blue sky creative meeting.

[SPEAKER_03]: This episode happened because I made Jenny on the Disney treasure quite randomly and I was like oh you could not be any cooler like you you get it you get what the audiences want from Disney live entertainment

[SPEAKER_03]: And then knowing she was working on some special stuff with the Disney Destiny, I was like, we have to get you on the podcast.

[SPEAKER_03]: We were able to record this episode in the Hercules Royal Suite aboard that ship during its inaugural sailing, pretty cool, I may add, but even cooler than the location was what we were able to discuss because what blew me away about Jenny

[SPEAKER_03]: because, you know, she helped create, sleep no more, no big deal, no big deal, just helped create one of the most important, immersive, theater experiences of our lifetime.

[SPEAKER_03]: Doesn't everything that happened on the Disney Destiny make a little more sense now, but what was me is that Jenny spends her time all of her time.

[SPEAKER_03]: helping craft and hone all of these experiences for us, but is also a parent, a mom whose child has joined her on board these ships for long periods of time while she's working, and that just blew my mind.

[SPEAKER_03]: To be on board a ship, working mothering parenting, producing, leading, I don't know how she did it all, and I had to find out, and we were thankfully able to discuss it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh, well, so the team has been working on the Disney Destiny and Hercules in particular for about four years.

[SPEAKER_01]: So the treasure was my first new build, but the destiny has been a place where I've been living pretty extensively as it's coming on board.

[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm you're at how, how did you bring that's the table and really push that through to offer something that Disney cries like us have never seen before?

[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, so I'll admit when I came into this role, I had never sailed on a this day cruise.

[SPEAKER_01]: I grew up going to the parks extensively, but you're in Yorker, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so I'm in the native New Yorker and I grew up going to theater always and also grew up going to Walt Disney World.

[SPEAKER_01]: So group going to Disney parks, but because we were theater people, we didn't seek out the light entertainment in our parks as much because the novelty for us was our churches.

[SPEAKER_01]: So I, but I did grow up with the nighttime spectaculars, and I, I mean, for me, my, my origin story, essentially is elimination's reflections of Earth.

[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, seeing elimination's reflections of Earth at Epcot when I was 11 years old blew my mind and just changed my perception of what is possible in theater, because I instantly clocked it as theater.

[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, well, wait, wait, wait, Peter doesn't have to involve singing.

[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't have to involve speaking or humans.

[SPEAKER_01]: Peter can be completely abstract and obut guard.

[SPEAKER_01]: And it got me interested in dance and puppetry and experimental theater and all these kinds of forms of art that one maybe wouldn't guess.

[SPEAKER_01]: I would have come to because of Disney.

[SPEAKER_01]: But then that journey kind of brought me full circle right back to here.

[SPEAKER_01]: But Cruise Line was never on my ranger.

[SPEAKER_01]: I was totally a parks kid.

[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.

[SPEAKER_01]: And when I got plopped into the world of Disney Cruise Line two years ago enthusiastically.

[SPEAKER_01]: So, I immediately recognized that Cruise Line offers a really unique opportunity for storytelling.

[SPEAKER_01]: at all of our experiences worldwide, we have ranges of experiences from the intimate to the spectacular.

[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the character, meet and greet is the smallest, the most intimate form of feeder, there is, and as we said, a nice hair spectacular is either as well on its largest and most grand scale.

[SPEAKER_01]: And that scale is somewhat compressed on the cruise line.

[SPEAKER_01]: The grand does it get quite as grand.

[SPEAKER_01]: We live more in the human here, which is exciting.

[SPEAKER_01]: And something I love about Disney Cruise Line that feels totally unique for our sites worldwide is, one, by orders of magnitude, we have far fewer guests on board these ships than we do in the parks.

[SPEAKER_01]: So there's a feeling of intimacy here that it unique to the site.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then we also have these guests as essentially a captive audience for multiple days.

[SPEAKER_01]: Over the course of four or five, seven days together, we get to really build a relationship.

[SPEAKER_01]: And Tissie Cruise Line has always been really successful at that from a crew standpoint.

[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you really built the relationship with your server, with your state-room host.

[SPEAKER_01]: But what feels a little new from an entertainment standpoint is saying, so what if we built a relationship like that with a character?

[SPEAKER_01]: What if we built that relationship with the story experience that can be durational over the course of your entire cruise at cruise line because of the intimacy and because of the extended period of time you don't only see the characters they see you and they get to respond to you and build a relationship with you.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a big believer in Peter that rewards keeping engagement where they can hurry

[SPEAKER_01]: The harder you play, the more it gives you, it's incredibly exciting.

[SPEAKER_01]: And so the destiny, these were all kind of principles that thrilled me when I first came into this role, and intentions set into place as we were developing the treasure.

[SPEAKER_01]: but really the destiny has been the place where we've really been able to take those principles and bring them into action, because this heroes and villains motif is the perfect invitation to really play with sleeping agent.

[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, it seems like it's set you up for success, basically, to offer these things like Dr. Facilier's Parler, which I still can't believe I was in a room with nine people.

[SPEAKER_04]: When are you ever on a Disney Christmas dayling and experience something with just that few people?

[SPEAKER_04]: mind-blowing, but then you also will excale it up a little with treble makers, and then you're all working together, which, you know, having a bunch of people participate together is something that happens on other Disney cruise line shifts, but not like this.

[SPEAKER_01]: Something we really love is, or something I'm really proud of from our creative team, it would have been really easy for the team to have created one show that was a template.

[SPEAKER_01]: And then said, right, there's the

[SPEAKER_01]: But instead, we really pushed ourselves and said, each of these villains are distinct.

[SPEAKER_01]: They all have their own identity, their own style, and they need their own storytelling methodology, their own medium in which to tell their story.

[SPEAKER_01]: So, whether it's under her spell, with Maleficent, officially as parlor, trouble making, or actually run away, they're all totally different from one another, totally different ways to play with the villain.

[SPEAKER_01]: And what I'd love to is how imagine you're and gave us like the greatest prompt ever with this heroism villains motif is villains aren't hugable the way that are bad five and our princesses are.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I love, so with the villains, we really gave ourselves the task of, let's think about these encounters, less as,

[SPEAKER_01]: And more about wheat little thrill rides, which is to say we're being drawn in to an experience that we know is going to be fallen, but maybe makes our tummy turn a little, maybe makes us a little bit nervous.

[SPEAKER_01]: I took me all woke for a long time, and those kinds of experiences, very much leverage, a feeling of,

[SPEAKER_01]: We all, the audience split up and did different things from what another and you're going to want to meet up with the bar afterwards.

[SPEAKER_01]: Because I did something totally different and I think we've done a really lovely job here on the destiny.

[SPEAKER_01]: creating that feeling of there's just so much to do and it's also unique and it's going to be different every time because there's that guess interactive element.

[SPEAKER_03]: It's so interesting to especially because it's the 7th ship, like, a lot of people who have done Disney cruise line before are kind of like, oh, it's another one.

[SPEAKER_05]: When makes it different, and what makes it different is so beyond what I expect it.

[SPEAKER_01]: crediting, we look credible backwells on a team, I into it knowledge as well, where I shared mine, but Jen Bascom, who's the creative director for our shipwine into a team on the ship, it's her first time as a creative director with Disney, which is wild, but she was resin director on glass, black and star crews are.

[SPEAKER_01]: So we have a team that's pulling from a really diverse playbook of different kinds of story experiences.

[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, an interesting thing about,

[SPEAKER_01]: the relationship between Disney Cruise Line and Galactic Star Cruiser, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: Is the Star Cruiser was, of course, in world and story, it was a cruise ship.

[SPEAKER_01]: And it was built on the model of what happens on a cruise ship.

[SPEAKER_01]: What's the pacing of the day on a cruise ship?

[SPEAKER_01]: And so there's this kind of beautiful, full-circle moment where the star cruiser learned from the cruise line, the cruise lines are in from the star cruiser.

[SPEAKER_01]: We get to keep on tele-stories and new and exciting ways, building on all of the amazing experiences the stories are colleagues have created, too.

[SPEAKER_03]: It's just, there's things on the ship that I didn't expect truly.

[SPEAKER_04]: Like I can't believe that the Disney Studios being used is like a character experience space.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I was there this past summer because when I take vacations, I go on vacation to go make theater, obviously.

[SPEAKER_01]: My team, my colleagues, they meet the real me every single day, both because of who I am as an artist and as a leader, but also because I'm a parent.
