- 0:10Welcome to today's broadcast of Sun, Salt, and Light.
- 0:14Sun, Salt, and Light, S-O-N, knowing and growing in your daily relationship with Jesus Christ,
- 0:21but also be in the salt and the light in your marriage, in your family,
- 0:26at your place of work, at your church, and even in the community you're in.
- 0:31I'm Pastor Michael Petit. This is a radio ministry of our church,
- 0:35Calvary Chapel Divine, Divine here in Divine, Texas.
- 0:38We are so glad that you joined us for today's broadcast.
- 0:41We are a Calvary Chapel, so we simply teach the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter.
- 0:47We believe that God uses His Word to transform, restore, and to change lives one verse at a time.
- 0:53If you're visiting our area, you'd like to get information about our church
- 0:57or church service times, maybe even track down some of the other teachings that
- 1:02we have available through podcasts, whether it's through Audible or Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
- 1:08You can do all of that at our church website at calvarydivine.org.
- 1:12That's calvarydivine.org.
- 1:14Hey, this is Pastor Michael Petit.
- 1:17Question for you. How do you disciple somebody with emotional health coming into the church?
- 1:24Imagine this. Imagine having a family of five kids, a husband and wife with a broken marriage.
- 1:32Two of the kids have tried to commit suicide. One has been actually placed into
- 1:38Lower Ridge, which is a place for mental health.
- 1:42And here we come into the church.
- 1:45This is my family. How do you disciple them?
- 1:50And that's not including the stuff I was dealing with. I had no clue what it
- 1:55was to be a father, no clue what it was to be a husband.
- 1:59And I was struggling with my own emotional health, which was through post-traumatic
- 2:03stress disorder, from being in combat.
- 2:07And here we are, and we need discipleship.
- 2:11What do you do as a church?
- 2:13Well, that's what this study is. We were able to, I had the blessing of being
- 2:18able to go to the Equip Conference here in Divine, Texas and teach.
- 2:23I had two sessions and this will actually be broken up probably into four teachings
- 2:28because they gave us two full hour sessions.
- 2:32And so you'll hear some of my testimony in this.
- 2:35You'll hear some of the things that our church did as I came and our family came into the church.
- 2:40Church some of the things that were suggested to us
- 2:43to do which was biblical counseling for our marriage
- 2:45and so it's i hope this helps
- 2:48you if you have your bible will be actually in psalm 23 and then we'll also
- 2:53be in joshua chapter 1 and so we'll go through this bit by bit piece by piece
- 2:59through the scripture as well so this is a teaching just fyi we will go verse
- 3:04by verse through the book of Joshua,
- 3:06chapter 1, I think it's chapter 1, verses 1 through 9, if I remember right.
- 3:11But I hope that you enjoy this. So the beginning of it, again,
- 3:16is me sharing a little bit about my testimony,
- 3:18our family's testimony, and as we're coming into the church,
- 3:22and just the reality of what people are dealing with,
- 3:26not only in the church, but also as they become new believers in coming to the
- 3:33church and how does the church disciple within that?
- 3:37And so that's what these teachings are. I hope that you enjoy them.
- 3:40This is session two, part two. Look up. I'm like, hey, doctors figured it out in 2009.
- 3:47I wasn't walking. I wasn't functioning.
- 3:50They thought I had cancer of the nerves. God didn't allow that.
- 3:55And so when we look at these, one of the things that I love is that if I'm going
- 4:01to be strong and courageous, I'm not being strong and courageous of anything in this world but God.
- 4:05All right? That's the reality of it.
- 4:09That's who we go to. In verse 7, it says, only be strong and very courageous.
- 4:13Be careful to do according to all the law that Moses, my servant, commanded you.
- 4:17Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left that you may have good
- 4:21success wherever you go. So, you know, when you think about good success,
- 4:26nobody wants to be an unsuccessful parent or mother or father.
- 4:32We want to be successful, but we need the word of God to do that.
- 4:37We need that safe guide. It's his word that allows us to do that.
- 4:43And so for me, it's in order to be obedient to God, I need to be in his word.
- 4:50He tells you the book of the law, you shall not depart from it from your mouth,
- 4:54but you shall meditate on a day and night so that you may be careful to do according
- 4:59to all that is written in it.
- 5:00For then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success.
- 5:05Part of being someone who disciples somebody through any kind of emotional distress
- 5:11is that you need to be able to have a handle of the word of God. God.
- 5:15You need to have the word of God on your heart. In Psalm 63,
- 5:20verse 1, it says, O God, you are my God.
- 5:23Early will I seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you in dry
- 5:28and thirsty land where there is no water.
- 5:31Psalm 63, verses 6 and 7, it says, When I remember you upon my bed and meditate
- 5:37on you in the watches of the night, which is that three o'clock to six six o'clock in the morning time.
- 5:43For you have been my help in the shadow of your wings. I will sing for joy.
- 5:47This is when David is running for his life. He writes that he's like in the,
- 5:52in the dark of night, I'm meditating on you.
- 5:55There are people trying to kill me and I'm a meditate on God.
- 6:00And that's what he's getting at. It's like for us, the word of God is,
- 6:03is if we have the temper, that's going to try to tempt that young believer that
- 6:08comes into the church to choke that seed out of the word and pull them back into the world.
- 6:14We need to have the word of God in 1 Thessalonians 2, verse 13.
- 6:18It says, for this reason, we also thank God without ceasing,
- 6:22because when you received the word of God, which you heard from us,
- 6:27you welcomed it not as the word of man, but as it is the truth,
- 6:32the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
- 6:37It's the word of God. It's the word of God that we want.
- 6:40I know for me as a pastor, that's what I want. I tell people all the time,
- 6:44you can have as much God as you want.
- 6:48Now, how much do you want? You can go to the hose, right?
- 6:52At the house, you can have that much or you can go to the fire hydrant. Which one you want?
- 6:57But it's not just about being in the word of God.
- 7:01It's not about storing knowledge. Knowledge is actually about taking what you learn,
- 7:06being obedient to it, and applying it in your marriage, in your family,
- 7:13in your churches, and in your community.
- 7:17So you can't be somebody different.
- 7:19Oh, you're perfect here.
- 7:22But I catch you on 410 and you're laying your horn on and you're like,
- 7:26no, you got to be the same person.
- 7:29It's what the word of God does in our life. The word of God is simply these
- 7:33things. It's a fire. It's a sword. It's a hammer.
- 7:38It tells us that in Jeremiah 23, verse 9. It says, is not my word like a fire?
- 7:44Says the Lord, like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces.
- 7:48It's the word of God that takes that hardened heart.
- 7:52So from 2008, November to January 11, 2009, 2009, I sat in those churches,
- 8:00and that hammer was just chugging away at that hard heart, breaking into pieces.
- 8:06That's what the Word of God does. It transforms lives.
- 8:11It's the greatest tool that you have in your toolbox.
- 8:15You have the Holy Spirit. You have the Word of God. You have the sword.
- 8:19You have everything that you need.
- 8:21In Hebrews chapter 4, verses 12, y'all know this this verse very well,
- 8:25for the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword,
- 8:29piercing to the division of the soul and the joints and the marrow,
- 8:32and is the discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart.
- 8:35Remember that. So when you're discipling somebody or you're with somebody,
- 8:41that's the word of God that discerns the thoughts and the intents of the heart, not you.
- 8:47Stop trying to fix people, right? We get in that habit of trying to fix people.
- 8:52So what do we need to do with the word of god one
- 8:55of the things that you need to do as you're discipling somebody is do
- 8:58that he tells you to meditate on a day and night so first
- 9:01thing you have to do is read it you have to read it
- 9:04not dan reading it to you you have to read it like you should be well i love
- 9:11as i see people intentionally taking notes like they're taking notes like that's
- 9:15the first thing i did i didn't know anything about studying the word of god
- 9:19i just was like Like I prayed,
- 9:22I was sitting in churches probably three months, four months.
- 9:25And I'm like, I'm not getting this Lord.
- 9:28I prayed it on my service. I'm like, I'm not getting it. And then I looked over
- 9:33and I saw where they're taking notes. Lord hit me.
- 9:36And so I started taking notes. I started taking all those extra scriptures that
- 9:41Joe would give and I would go look those scriptures up. And that's how I started.
- 9:46And then I got a Bible that I could actually read. Somebody told me,
- 9:49hey, there are different versions of the Bible. That's what discipleship does.
- 9:53When you have somebody in church, they don't know. And I'm like,
- 9:56well, you can get an NJKD or get an NASD. I don't know none of that stuff.
- 10:01Give me the LMNOP. Just tell me what to buy.
- 10:06Right? Just tell me what to buy. Matthew 4.4 says, but he answered and it is
- 10:12written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
- 10:17And Jeremiah 15.16 says, your words were found and I ate them.
- 10:22And your words became to me a joy and a delight of my heart,
- 10:26for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.
- 10:29It's God's word that we should be digesting every day. As we read it,
- 10:34we should understand it.
- 10:36Context is king. Okay? I don't want to hear how you feel about description.
- 10:43Because you didn't write it from God's. It's God breathed.
- 10:48What is the context? Who is he writing to? what is the audience context is king
- 10:54when you're teaching somebody in discipleship when they're going through stuff
- 10:57they may not get all that but that's your job to help them understand that,
- 11:03every little time that you get to spend with them every time that you're you're
- 11:07just they're just taking everything in understand we're like sponges.
- 11:13Me and my wife, we were just taking it in. Like whatever, okay,
- 11:17well, we'll try that. Let's do that.
- 11:20Okay, that's, well, we'll listen to that guy.
- 11:23We'll listen to that person on the radio. I can listen to him.
- 11:27Okay, I'll check him out.
- 11:28It's like you start understanding it and you start using God and you use God
- 11:33in those difficult times.
- 11:35In those times when it gets really tough and then you absorb and apply it.
- 11:41In James chapter 1 verses 22 to 25 it says be doers of the word and not hearers only.
- 11:47Deceiving yourselves for anyone who is a hearer of the word
- 11:50and not a doer he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in the
- 11:55mirror for he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he's like
- 11:59but the one who looks into the perfect law the law of liberty the word of God
- 12:05God and perseveres being no hearer who forgets,
- 12:09but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
- 12:12It's like you're actually doing it. And then you're thinking about a day and
- 12:16night, Ephesians chapter six, verse 17, and take the helmet of salvation,
- 12:21the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.
- 12:24You're actually supposed to put the helmet of salvation on every day, right?
- 12:29That's part of it. The armor of God. Some of you may not even know where your armor is.
- 12:34Like in the military that's not a good thing when the sergeant he has your weapon
- 12:39you're in trouble so you have the word of God you're supposed to use it and
- 12:45don't tell me that you're too busy because God would never give you a schedule
- 12:49that's too busy to exclude him.
- 12:53Busy is simply the acronym for busy is being under Satan's yoke.
- 12:57So maybe something needs to come off your plate.
- 13:01OK, lastly, we see in verse nine, it says, I have not commanded you to be strong and courageous.
- 13:07Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
- 13:13Faith starts with that first step.
- 13:17And I'm speaking on this as I tell you, I have actually stepped on a minefield.
- 13:24With engineers so you know they have a wonderful name for i think it's a m157 something,
- 13:32and it's a probing stick for a mine it's just a
- 13:35stick you could get one out in new york that's basically what you're
- 13:38doing and you're just doing like this looking for the
- 13:41little battery that's sticking up and i can
- 13:44tell you i know exactly what that scripture says about
- 13:47taking that step have to be here because let me tell
- 13:50you you don't want to move so our major lines will
- 13:52follow up we got to find out make sure this is clear and let's
- 13:56go i didn't move for 15 minutes me lavelle kelsey moore we were knuckleheads
- 14:02so our major calls out you had been in vietnam he was like you want glenn it's
- 14:07like y'all need to move by the time we did that they started finding minds so
- 14:12when we do Do take these steps.
- 14:14And let me tell you something. It is, y'all need to understand.
- 14:18When somebody's coming into your church the first time, it's very fearful for them.
- 14:22The love that you present. Look, you got to get this. And I hope all of you get this.
- 14:28You cannot expect them to be cleaned up the moment they're here. All right. Okay.
- 14:34This is where the church is kind of, we're missing this.
- 14:39I met a guy at the food pantry this week, and he's on the edge of eternity.
- 14:48He's dying. His dialysis is coming to an end. And he didn't know Christ.
- 14:54So they called me. They were like, Mike, we need a Bible. Can you come pray
- 14:57with him? I was like, sure.
- 14:58That's the other thing I do, and I would encourage you to do that,
- 15:01too, is I give these things away.
- 15:02Way every time you bring somebody to faith you pray for somebody you say here take this,
- 15:08and in there on every bible i got
- 15:11something written that says this this book will
- 15:14keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this book and it has the church
- 15:19information and phone number on them and i gave it to him i said james here
- 15:22we go he gave he gave his life to christ the james goes mike i want to come
- 15:27to church but i got a girlfriend i'm like hey girl just come bring her because
- 15:31she needs to come to pay too. That's right.
- 15:34We've had three, two, three. We've had three people that have come in,
- 15:39not married, got married.
- 15:42Did that not us so you don't
- 15:45get in you don't wash your feet before you
- 15:48get in the shower you just get in the shower right so
- 15:51there's a lot of fear when somebody comes in there's a lot of fear when you
- 15:56go to disciple somebody because they're dr spivey said it's so good last year
- 16:01remember he said how you're not just talking to that one person you're talking
- 16:06to him because he has his family experience, you have the work experience,
- 16:10you have the church experience, you're talking to all those people.
- 16:14And so when you see that, it's just a reminder that that first step into the
- 16:19church is going to be hard.
- 16:21And it's all about the attitude. It's all about, I think Chuck Swindoll said it best.
- 16:26He says, I'm convinced that life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
- 16:33And it's so with you, we are charged of our attitudes. It's all in our attitudes.
- 16:39Are you going to grow or are you going to grumble? I grumbled for a long time.
- 16:45I was dealing with a lot of old baggage.
- 16:48And God brings that stuff up. And whoever's discipling you, that's who you're
- 16:55talking to. My mom sent me a baseball.
- 16:58A baseball from when I was a kid. And it destroyed me.
- 17:04I had a home run with that baseball. And nobody saw it. And I hated baseball.
- 17:10I would blame the glove. I would blame. My brothers were good.
- 17:14My brothers both had scholarships.
- 17:16Going for a university in North Carolina. They all went to a Baptist college
- 17:19in Charleston. They were really good at baseball. You know when you're not that good.
- 17:23And I would blame everything else. But it was my attitude.
- 17:27That one little baseball messed me up.
- 17:31But then my grandson started throwing it, and he threw it without any care in the world.
- 17:37Even grandmas sulked him out.
- 17:43But do you understand what I'm saying now? That I'm convinced that life is 10%
- 17:48what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
- 17:53And that's who you're going to be discipling. And think about it.
- 17:56You're going to have all that emotional baggage.
- 17:59We just talked about Gen Z. And the next generation, I know it's Generation
- 18:04Alpha that's coming up that'll be next.
- 18:06And they're going to be dealing with people more stuff. They said Generation
- 18:09Alpha will probably be the most medicated and most mental health generation,
- 18:16and that is the coping generations.
- 18:18That is the ones that were affected by the schools closing, by the churches closing.
- 18:24And so all that stuff affected it.
- 18:27So we finish up with this, and
- 18:29one of the things we can't do is we cannot shrink back from obeying God.
- 18:34Just remember that the Lord is near you. You're not not alone.
- 18:38You may feel alone, but if you know somebody that's going through something,
- 18:42if they don't show up on your church on Sunday, somebody needs to check on them.
- 18:48If it's been a week, two weeks, just say, hey, are you okay?
- 18:51Well, that's the pastor showing. No, it's all of our jobs. It's not that you're
- 18:56being nosy or whatever. You just say, are you okay?
- 18:59No, y'all gave me flu A, you know? But to Abraham, God said,
- 19:04do not be afraid. I am your.
- 19:19When David fell into adultery, God was with him. God saved him.
- 19:27Him when elijah had his
- 19:30lack of faith and was ready to to be done
- 19:33with this world god spoke to him in
- 19:36the quietness do y'all understand like
- 19:39god spoke to him in that small quiet place
- 19:43but all that noise that he don't buy and he
- 19:46still spoke to him in beastly so sometimes you don't
- 19:50have to say anything it's just like i would say at the book times that i will
- 19:54speak of that person so you're just there yeah and so joshua i love joshua because
- 20:00you know there's simple applications that we need to do in our lives which is
- 20:04when you're discipling somebody you need god's word,
- 20:09and you need to to not fear you have his sustaining power so he tells you be
- 20:16strong and courageous be strong
- 20:18and courageous and remember you're not stepping from a place of a victim.
- 20:22You need to let that person know you're stepping into victory now. You're a child of God.
- 20:28That's the one thing that I would share with y'all.
- 20:31Just remember, you have a mission that God has put you on, and that is to be
- 20:37somebody who disciples.
- 20:39And guess what? You should be discipled by somebody.
- 20:42So you need to ask that question. And that
- 20:45book that you have is a great thing that should
- 20:48be done when you go with need people for those moments
- 20:52when we talk about the come on in and the breaking on the bread fellowship
- 20:55prayer and word of God there's steps that
- 20:58you can follow in now on the flight workshops do that
- 21:01and just remember sometimes when you're coming into
- 21:04it you're going to be dealing with some heavy stuff if it's
- 21:08too much put the
- 21:11white flag up get a hold your pastoral team and
- 21:14bring them alongside so they can help you or
- 21:18get with one of the right man y'all get y'all
- 21:21got to get this those that are over the age of 60 they have a wisdom that you
- 21:26cannot bring them with you you may have a young mom who's in her 20s or 30s
- 21:32and you go well why don't you bring them with you god is not done with them
- 21:37until he calls it home and And there's still a service in the church that they can do.
- 21:42Doesn't matter the age.
- 21:43Music.
- 21:46There's a wisdom that's there that needs to be used. And I know I've talked
- 21:50way too much, and we'll pray for y'all.
- 21:53Well, that concludes today's broadcast of Sun, Salt, and Light Radio.
