  Hey, this is Pastor Michael Petit.

  Question for you. How do you disciple somebody with emotional health coming into the church?
• 1:24
  Imagine this. Imagine having a family of five kids, a husband and wife with a broken marriage.
• 1:32
  Two of the kids have tried to commit suicide. One has been actually placed into
• 1:38
  Lower Ridge, which is a place for mental health.
• 1:42
  And here we come into the church.
• 1:45
  This is my family. How do you disciple them?
• 1:50
  And that's not including the stuff I was dealing with. I had no clue what it
• 1:55
  was to be a father, no clue what it was to be a husband.
• 1:59
  And I was struggling with my own emotional health, which was through post-traumatic
• 2:03
  stress disorder, from being in combat.
• 2:07
  And here we are, and we need discipleship.
• 2:11
  What do you do as a church?
• 2:13
  Well, that's what this study is. We were able to, I had the blessing of being
• 2:18
  able to go to the Equip Conference here in Divine, Texas and teach.
• 2:23
  I had two sessions and this will actually be broken up probably into four teachings
• 2:28
  because they gave us two full hour sessions.
• 2:32
  And so you'll hear some of my testimony in this.
• 2:35
  You'll hear some of the things that our church did as I came and our family came into the church.
• 2:40
  Church some of the things that were suggested to us
• 2:43
  to do which was biblical counseling for our marriage
• 2:45
  and so it's i hope this helps
• 2:48
  you if you have your bible will be actually in psalm 23 and then we'll also
• 2:53
  be in joshua chapter 1 and so we'll go through this bit by bit piece by piece
• 2:59
  through the scripture as well so this is a teaching just fyi we will go verse

  by verse through the book of Joshua,
• 3:06
  chapter 1, I think it's chapter 1, verses 1 through 9, if I remember right.

  But I hope that you enjoy this. So the beginning of it, again,
• 3:16
  is me sharing a little bit about my testimony,
• 3:18
  our family's testimony, and as we're coming into the church,
• 3:22
  and just the reality of what people are dealing with,
• 3:26
  not only in the church, but also as they become new believers in coming to the
• 3:33
  church and how does the church disciple within that?
• 3:37
  And so that's what these teachings are. I hope that you enjoy them.
• 3:40
  This is session two, part two. Look up. I'm like, hey, doctors figured it out in 2009.

  I wasn't walking. I wasn't functioning.
• 3:50
  They thought I had cancer of the nerves. God didn't allow that.
• 3:55
  And so when we look at these, one of the things that I love is that if I'm going
• 4:01
  to be strong and courageous, I'm not being strong and courageous of anything in this world but God.
• 4:05
  All right? That's the reality of it.
• 4:09
  That's who we go to. In verse 7, it says, only be strong and very courageous.
• 4:13
  Be careful to do according to all the law that Moses, my servant, commanded you.
• 4:17
  Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left that you may have good
• 4:21
  success wherever you go. So, you know, when you think about good success,
• 4:26
  nobody wants to be an unsuccessful parent or mother or father.
• 4:32
  We want to be successful, but we need the word of God to do that.
• 4:37
  We need that safe guide. It's his word that allows us to do that.
• 4:43
  And so for me, it's in order to be obedient to God, I need to be in his word.
• 4:50
  He tells you the book of the law, you shall not depart from it from your mouth,
• 4:54
  but you shall meditate on a day and night so that you may be careful to do according
• 4:59
  to all that is written in it.
• 5:00
  For then you will make your way prosperous and then you will have good success.
• 5:05
  Part of being someone who disciples somebody through any kind of emotional distress
• 5:11
  is that you need to be able to have a handle of the word of God. God.
• 5:15
  You need to have the word of God on your heart. In Psalm 63,
• 5:20
  verse 1, it says, O God, you are my God.
• 5:23
  Early will I seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you in dry
• 5:28
  and thirsty land where there is no water.
• 5:31
  Psalm 63, verses 6 and 7, it says, When I remember you upon my bed and meditate
• 5:37
  on you in the watches of the night, which is that three o'clock to six six o'clock in the morning time.
• 5:43
  For you have been my help in the shadow of your wings. I will sing for joy.
• 5:47
  This is when David is running for his life. He writes that he's like in the,
• 5:52
  in the dark of night, I'm meditating on you.
• 5:55
  There are people trying to kill me and I'm a meditate on God.
• 6:00
  And that's what he's getting at. It's like for us, the word of God is,
• 6:03
  is if we have the temper, that's going to try to tempt that young believer that
• 6:08
  comes into the church to choke that seed out of the word and pull them back into the world.
• 6:14
  We need to have the word of God in 1 Thessalonians 2, verse 13.
• 6:18
  It says, for this reason, we also thank God without ceasing,
• 6:22
  because when you received the word of God, which you heard from us,
• 6:27
  you welcomed it not as the word of man, but as it is the truth,
• 6:32
  the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.
• 6:37
  It's the word of God. It's the word of God that we want.
• 6:40
  I know for me as a pastor, that's what I want. I tell people all the time,
• 6:44
  you can have as much God as you want.
• 6:48
  Now, how much do you want? You can go to the hose, right?
• 6:52
  At the house, you can have that much or you can go to the fire hydrant. Which one you want?
• 6:57
  But it's not just about being in the word of God.
• 7:01
  It's not about storing knowledge. Knowledge is actually about taking what you learn,
• 7:06
  being obedient to it, and applying it in your marriage, in your family,
• 7:13
  in your churches, and in your community.
• 7:17
  So you can't be somebody different.
• 7:19
  Oh, you're perfect here.
• 7:22
  But I catch you on 410 and you're laying your horn on and you're like,
• 7:26
  no, you got to be the same person.
• 7:29
  It's what the word of God does in our life. The word of God is simply these
• 7:33
  things. It's a fire. It's a sword. It's a hammer.
• 7:38
  It tells us that in Jeremiah 23, verse 9. It says, is not my word like a fire?
• 7:44
  Says the Lord, like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces.
• 7:48
  It's the word of God that takes that hardened heart.
• 7:52
  So from 2008, November to January 11, 2009, 2009, I sat in those churches,
• 8:00
  and that hammer was just chugging away at that hard heart, breaking into pieces.
• 8:06
  That's what the Word of God does. It transforms lives.
• 8:11
  It's the greatest tool that you have in your toolbox.
• 8:15
  You have the Holy Spirit. You have the Word of God. You have the sword.
• 8:19
  You have everything that you need.
• 8:21
  In Hebrews chapter 4, verses 12, y'all know this this verse very well,
• 8:25
  for the word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword,
• 8:29
  piercing to the division of the soul and the joints and the marrow,
• 8:32
  and is the discerner of thoughts and intents of the heart.
• 8:35
  Remember that. So when you're discipling somebody or you're with somebody,
• 8:41
  that's the word of God that discerns the thoughts and the intents of the heart, not you.
• 8:47
  Stop trying to fix people, right? We get in that habit of trying to fix people.
• 8:52
  So what do we need to do with the word of god one
• 8:55
  of the things that you need to do as you're discipling somebody is do
• 8:58
  that he tells you to meditate on a day and night so first
• 9:01
  thing you have to do is read it you have to read it
• 9:04
  not dan reading it to you you have to read it like you should be well i love
• 9:11
  as i see people intentionally taking notes like they're taking notes like that's
• 9:15
  the first thing i did i didn't know anything about studying the word of god
• 9:19
  i just was like Like I prayed,
• 9:22
  I was sitting in churches probably three months, four months.
• 9:25
  And I'm like, I'm not getting this Lord.
• 9:28
  I prayed it on my service. I'm like, I'm not getting it. And then I looked over
• 9:33
  and I saw where they're taking notes. Lord hit me.
• 9:36
  And so I started taking notes. I started taking all those extra scriptures that
• 9:41
  Joe would give and I would go look those scriptures up. And that's how I started.
• 9:46
  And then I got a Bible that I could actually read. Somebody told me,
• 9:49
  hey, there are different versions of the Bible. That's what discipleship does.
• 9:53
  When you have somebody in church, they don't know. And I'm like,
• 9:56
  well, you can get an NJKD or get an NASD. I don't know none of that stuff.
• 10:01
  Give me the LMNOP. Just tell me what to buy.
• 10:06
  Right? Just tell me what to buy. Matthew 4.4 says, but he answered and it is
• 10:12
  written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
• 10:17
  And Jeremiah 15.16 says, your words were found and I ate them.
• 10:22
  And your words became to me a joy and a delight of my heart,
• 10:26
  for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.
• 10:29
  It's God's word that we should be digesting every day. As we read it,
• 10:34
  we should understand it.
• 10:36
  Context is king. Okay? I don't want to hear how you feel about description.
• 10:43
  Because you didn't write it from God's. It's God breathed.
• 10:48
  What is the context? Who is he writing to? what is the audience context is king
• 10:54
  when you're teaching somebody in discipleship when they're going through stuff
• 10:57
  they may not get all that but that's your job to help them understand that,
• 11:03
  every little time that you get to spend with them every time that you're you're
• 11:07
  just they're just taking everything in understand we're like sponges.
• 11:13
  Me and my wife, we were just taking it in. Like whatever, okay,
• 11:17
  well, we'll try that. Let's do that.
• 11:20
  Okay, that's, well, we'll listen to that guy.
• 11:23
  We'll listen to that person on the radio. I can listen to him.
• 11:27
  Okay, I'll check him out.
• 11:28
  It's like you start understanding it and you start using God and you use God
• 11:33
  in those difficult times.
• 11:35
  In those times when it gets really tough and then you absorb and apply it.
• 11:41
  In James chapter 1 verses 22 to 25 it says be doers of the word and not hearers only.
• 11:47
  Deceiving yourselves for anyone who is a hearer of the word
• 11:50
  and not a doer he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in the
• 11:55
  mirror for he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he's like
• 11:59
  but the one who looks into the perfect law the law of liberty the word of God
• 12:05
  God and perseveres being no hearer who forgets,
• 12:09
  but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
• 12:12
  It's like you're actually doing it. And then you're thinking about a day and
• 12:16
  night, Ephesians chapter six, verse 17, and take the helmet of salvation,
• 12:21
  the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.
• 12:24
  You're actually supposed to put the helmet of salvation on every day, right?
• 12:29
  That's part of it. The armor of God. Some of you may not even know where your armor is.
• 12:34
  Like in the military that's not a good thing when the sergeant he has your weapon
• 12:39
  you're in trouble so you have the word of God you're supposed to use it and
• 12:45
  don't tell me that you're too busy because God would never give you a schedule
• 12:49
  that's too busy to exclude him.
• 12:53
  Busy is simply the acronym for busy is being under Satan's yoke.
• 12:57
  So maybe something needs to come off your plate.
• 13:01
  OK, lastly, we see in verse nine, it says, I have not commanded you to be strong and courageous.
• 13:07
  Do not be frightened and do not be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
• 13:13
  Faith starts with that first step.
• 13:17
  And I'm speaking on this as I tell you, I have actually stepped on a minefield.
• 13:24
  With engineers so you know they have a wonderful name for i think it's a m157 something,
• 13:32
  and it's a probing stick for a mine it's just a
• 13:35
  stick you could get one out in new york that's basically what you're
• 13:38
  doing and you're just doing like this looking for the
• 13:41
  little battery that's sticking up and i can
• 13:44
  tell you i know exactly what that scripture says about
• 13:47
  taking that step have to be here because let me tell
• 13:50
  you you don't want to move so our major lines will
• 13:52
  follow up we got to find out make sure this is clear and let's
• 13:56
  go i didn't move for 15 minutes me lavelle kelsey moore we were knuckleheads
• 14:02
  so our major calls out you had been in vietnam he was like you want glenn it's
• 14:07
  like y'all need to move by the time we did that they started finding minds so
• 14:12
  when we do Do take these steps.
• 14:14
  And let me tell you something. It is, y'all need to understand.
• 14:18
  When somebody's coming into your church the first time, it's very fearful for them.
• 14:22
  The love that you present. Look, you got to get this. And I hope all of you get this.
• 14:28
  You cannot expect them to be cleaned up the moment they're here. All right. Okay.
• 14:34
  This is where the church is kind of, we're missing this.
• 14:39
  I met a guy at the food pantry this week, and he's on the edge of eternity.
• 14:48
  He's dying. His dialysis is coming to an end. And he didn't know Christ.
• 14:54
  So they called me. They were like, Mike, we need a Bible. Can you come pray
• 14:57
  with him? I was like, sure.
• 14:58
  That's the other thing I do, and I would encourage you to do that,
• 15:01
  too, is I give these things away.
• 15:02
  Way every time you bring somebody to faith you pray for somebody you say here take this,
• 15:08
  and in there on every bible i got
• 15:11
  something written that says this this book will
• 15:14
  keep you from sin or sin will keep you from this book and it has the church
• 15:19
  information and phone number on them and i gave it to him i said james here
• 15:22
  we go he gave he gave his life to christ the james goes mike i want to come
• 15:27
  to church but i got a girlfriend i'm like hey girl just come bring her because
• 15:31
  she needs to come to pay too. That's right.
• 15:34
  We've had three, two, three. We've had three people that have come in,
• 15:39
  not married, got married.
• 15:42
  Did that not us so you don't
• 15:45
  get in you don't wash your feet before you
• 15:48
  get in the shower you just get in the shower right so
• 15:51
  there's a lot of fear when somebody comes in there's a lot of fear when you
• 15:56
  go to disciple somebody because they're dr spivey said it's so good last year
• 16:01
  remember he said how you're not just talking to that one person you're talking
• 16:06
  to him because he has his family experience, you have the work experience,
• 16:10
  you have the church experience, you're talking to all those people.
• 16:14
  And so when you see that, it's just a reminder that that first step into the
• 16:19
  church is going to be hard.
• 16:21
  And it's all about the attitude. It's all about, I think Chuck Swindoll said it best.
• 16:26
  He says, I'm convinced that life is 10% of what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
• 16:33
  And it's so with you, we are charged of our attitudes. It's all in our attitudes.
• 16:39
  Are you going to grow or are you going to grumble? I grumbled for a long time.
• 16:45
  I was dealing with a lot of old baggage.
• 16:48
  And God brings that stuff up. And whoever's discipling you, that's who you're
• 16:55
  talking to. My mom sent me a baseball.
• 16:58
  A baseball from when I was a kid. And it destroyed me.
• 17:04
  I had a home run with that baseball. And nobody saw it. And I hated baseball.
• 17:10
  I would blame the glove. I would blame. My brothers were good.
• 17:14
  My brothers both had scholarships.
• 17:16
  Going for a university in North Carolina. They all went to a Baptist college
• 17:19
  in Charleston. They were really good at baseball. You know when you're not that good.
• 17:23
  And I would blame everything else. But it was my attitude.
• 17:27
  That one little baseball messed me up.
• 17:31
  But then my grandson started throwing it, and he threw it without any care in the world.
• 17:37
  Even grandmas sulked him out.
• 17:43
  But do you understand what I'm saying now? That I'm convinced that life is 10%
• 17:48
  what happens to me and 90% how I react to it.
• 17:53
  And that's who you're going to be discipling. And think about it.
• 17:56
  You're going to have all that emotional baggage.
• 17:59
  We just talked about Gen Z. And the next generation, I know it's Generation
• 18:04
  Alpha that's coming up that'll be next.
• 18:06
  And they're going to be dealing with people more stuff. They said Generation
• 18:09
  Alpha will probably be the most medicated and most mental health generation,
• 18:16
  and that is the coping generations.
• 18:18
  That is the ones that were affected by the schools closing, by the churches closing.
• 18:24
  And so all that stuff affected it.
• 18:27
  So we finish up with this, and
• 18:29
  one of the things we can't do is we cannot shrink back from obeying God.
• 18:34
  Just remember that the Lord is near you. You're not not alone.
• 18:38
  You may feel alone, but if you know somebody that's going through something,
• 18:42
  if they don't show up on your church on Sunday, somebody needs to check on them.
• 18:48
  If it's been a week, two weeks, just say, hey, are you okay?
• 18:51
  Well, that's the pastor showing. No, it's all of our jobs. It's not that you're
• 18:56
  being nosy or whatever. You just say, are you okay?
• 18:59
  No, y'all gave me flu A, you know? But to Abraham, God said,
• 19:04
  do not be afraid. I am your.
• 19:19
  When David fell into adultery, God was with him. God saved him.
• 19:27
  Him when elijah had his
• 19:30
  lack of faith and was ready to to be done
• 19:33
  with this world god spoke to him in
• 19:36
  the quietness do y'all understand like
• 19:39
  god spoke to him in that small quiet place
• 19:43
  but all that noise that he don't buy and he
• 19:46
  still spoke to him in beastly so sometimes you don't
• 19:50
  have to say anything it's just like i would say at the book times that i will
• 19:54
  speak of that person so you're just there yeah and so joshua i love joshua because
• 20:00
  you know there's simple applications that we need to do in our lives which is
• 20:04
  when you're discipling somebody you need god's word,
• 20:09
  and you need to to not fear you have his sustaining power so he tells you be
• 20:16
  strong and courageous be strong
• 20:18
  and courageous and remember you're not stepping from a place of a victim.
• 20:22
  You need to let that person know you're stepping into victory now. You're a child of God.
• 20:28
  That's the one thing that I would share with y'all.
• 20:31
  Just remember, you have a mission that God has put you on, and that is to be
• 20:37
  somebody who disciples.
• 20:39
  And guess what? You should be discipled by somebody.
• 20:42
  So you need to ask that question. And that
• 20:45
  book that you have is a great thing that should
• 20:48
  be done when you go with need people for those moments
• 20:52
  when we talk about the come on in and the breaking on the bread fellowship
• 20:55
  prayer and word of God there's steps that
• 20:58
  you can follow in now on the flight workshops do that
• 21:01
  and just remember sometimes when you're coming into
• 21:04
  it you're going to be dealing with some heavy stuff if it's
• 21:08
  too much put the
• 21:11
  white flag up get a hold your pastoral team and
• 21:14
  bring them alongside so they can help you or
• 21:18
  get with one of the right man y'all get y'all
• 21:21
  got to get this those that are over the age of 60 they have a wisdom that you
• 21:26
  cannot bring them with you you may have a young mom who's in her 20s or 30s
• 21:32
  and you go well why don't you bring them with you god is not done with them
• 21:37
  until he calls it home and And there's still a service in the church that they can do.
• 21:42
  Doesn't matter the age.
• 21:43

  There's a wisdom that's there that needs to be used. And I know I've talked
• 21:50
  way too much, and we'll pray for y'all.
