- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:17And I'm Morgan. And we are broadcasting live
- 0:19from the Snarful Solutions Group right here in
- 0:22Sacramento, California. Yep. It is Friday, May
- 0:248th, 2026. And if you're local, it's looking
- 0:27like a beautiful day. We've got sunny skies,
- 0:30about 83 degrees outside and just a really light
- 0:33six mile per hour wind. Which is honestly a relief
- 0:36compared to the rest of the country right now.
- 0:38Yeah, no kidding. Nationally, there are 173 active
- 0:43weather alerts with 55 of those over land. So
- 0:46definitely stay safe if you're traveling. Right.
- 0:49And looking at the markets, it was a bit of a
- 0:51rough day yesterday. The Dow took a pretty decent
- 0:53hit, dropping over 405 points. That's about 0
- 0:55.81 % to close at 49 ,596 .97. Yeah, and the
- 1:00S &P 500 dipped, too, down about 39 points, settling
- 1:03at 7 ,337 .1. Bitcoin is also doing that hover
- 1:07thing again. It's just under 80K, sitting at
- 1:0979 ,686 .43. Which is down slightly for the day,
- 1:13but still up over 1 ,100 points for the week,
- 1:16so not too shabby. True. And for the sports fans,
- 1:20no games for the local Kings or the SF Giants
- 1:22yesterday. But the Oakland A's absolutely crushed
- 1:25the Phillies 12 to 1. JT Jin took the win, which
- 1:29was honestly just an incredible game to watch.
- 1:32Oh, absolutely. But all right, let's transition
- 1:33to the main event today. We are taking a deep
- 1:36dive into the source material surrounding global
- 1:39tech friction. Yeah, we really want to explore
- 1:41the cascading real world impacts of this stuff.
- 1:44I mean, we're talking about everything from supply
- 1:46chain crunches, hitting family living rooms to
- 1:49massive software vulnerabilities that are frankly
- 1:52disrupting global education. It's all connected,
- 1:54which is exactly what we do here. Exactly. But
- 1:58before we jump in, we have a quick word from
- 2:00our sponsor. Today's episode is brought to you
- 2:03by Strong Coffee, the premium instant coffee
- 2:05that tastes like a traditional brew, but is packed
- 2:07with 15 grams of protein, MCTs, and adaptogens

- 2:19so let's unpack this first story because this
- 2:21is going to affect a lot of parents out there.
- 2:23Nintendo just announced a global price hike for
- 2:26the Switch 2. And it is not a small hike either.
- 2:30Starting September 1st, the U .S. price is jumping
- 2:32from 450 bucks up to 500. Yep. And it's hitting
- 2:36everywhere. Canada goes up 50 bucks to 679 .99.
- 2:40Europe gets a 40 euro bump to 499 .99. And Japan
- 2:44is getting hit even earlier, right? Like May
- 2:4625th. Exactly, May 25th. And they're seeing price
- 2:49hikes across the entire board. Not just the Switch
- 2:522, but the original Switch line, Nintendo Switch
- 2:54Online, and strangely enough, even their traditional
- 2:57playing cards. Wait, playing cards? Like actual
- 3:00paper cards? Yeah, literal playing cards, which
- 3:02kind of hints that this isn't just arbitrary.
- 3:04inflation there's a massive physical supply chain
- 3:07issue going on here right and we should probably
- 3:08explain the why behind the electronic side of
- 3:11this yeah because usually consoles get cheaper
- 3:14over time right historically yes but we are currently
- 3:16in the middle of a global memory shortage the
- 3:19industry is actually calling it ramageddon ramageddon
- 3:22i love tech industry branding right But it's
- 3:25serious. Basically, the massive build out of
- 3:28AI data centers, you know, by companies like
- 3:32Meta, Google, Microsoft has created this unbelievable
- 3:35surge in demand for DDR5 RAM and solid state
- 3:38drives. OK, so the big AI companies are basically
- 3:41buying up all the memory chips to build their
- 3:43massive servers. Exactly. Which drives up the
- 3:46cost for everyone else. Add in those April 2025
- 3:50Trump terrorists on Vietnam and China and the
- 3:54whole hardware ecosystem is just stretched incredibly
- 3:56thin. I mean it's kind of like trying to buy
- 3:58flour during a massive neighborhood baking craze.
- 4:01Oh that's a good way to put it. Like AI companies
- 4:03are buying up all the ingredients to bake these
- 4:05massive data centers and gamers are just left
- 4:07paying double for the scraps just to play a video
- 4:09game. That's exactly what's happening and the
- 4:12real world impact here is that gaming which used
- 4:14to be the standard relatively accessible family
- 4:17pastime is becoming a luxury hobby. Yeah 500
- 4:20bucks is a lot of money for a family. It is and
- 4:22Nintendo isn't alone Sony bumped the PS5 Pro
- 4:25to $900 recently. Which is just wild. Right.
- 4:28And Valve had to completely delay the Steam Machine
- 4:30because they couldn't source the parts affordably.
- 4:33Wow. Okay, but let's look closer at this Nintendo
- 4:35situation, moving on to our next story. Yeah.
- 4:37Because their newly released Q4 financials just
- 4:39came out. Yep, they did. So, if things are so
- 4:42expensive to make... Is Nintendo actually losing
- 4:45money? Oh, definitely not. Not even close. Wait,
- 4:48really? Yeah, they just reported full fiscal
- 4:50year sales of $14 .6 billion. That is a 98 .6
- 4:55% increase. That is double. That is insane. Right.
- 4:58And their operating profit is up 27 .5%. The
- 5:02Switch 2 sold 19 .86 million units, which actually
- 5:06outsold the original Switch's first full year.
- 5:09Okay, and I saw their software is booming too.
- 5:11Mario Kart World moved, what, 14 .7 million units?
- 5:14Yep, and Pokemon Legends ZA is doing massive
- 5:17digital numbers as well. So wait, I have to push
- 5:19back here. Let's look closer at this corporate
- 5:22narrative. Sure. They just had the best console
- 5:24launch in their history. Their IP is exploding.
- 5:26I mean, this Super Mario Galaxy movie grossed
- 5:29over $800 million in just four weeks. Yeah, it
- 5:31was a smash hit. Yet their Q4 revenue actually
- 5:34missed estimates. And they're projecting a massive
- 5:38100 billion yen hit to revenue next year. Are
- 5:42they just sandbagging their expectations? It
- 5:44really looks like that on the surface, but you
- 5:46have to understand how hardware life cycles work.
- 5:49launch years are always heavily front -loaded.
- 5:51Right, because all the die -hard fans buying
- 5:53on day one. Exactly, but now they're facing this
- 5:56$50 price hike because of component costs. That
- 6:00instantly cools down the more casual buyers.
- 6:03Plus consumers are still totally happy playing
- 6:05older original Switch games, like Animal Crossing.
- 6:08Oh right, because the Switch 2 is backwards compatible.
- 6:10Yep. So projecting a drop to 16 .5 million hardware
- 6:14units for the next fiscal year, that's not sandbagging.
- 6:17That's just a realistic stabilization when your
- 6:20supply chain is this hostile. Got it. So they're
- 6:23flush with cash. But they know the hardware market
- 6:25is about to hit a brick wall because of ramageddon.
- 6:28Exactly. Okay, well let's pivot a bit. We just
- 6:30talked about the vulnerability of hardware supply
- 6:32chains and entertainment. But what about the
- 6:34software our kids rely on for their actual futures?
- 6:38Ah, yeah, the Canvas situation. This is rough.
- 6:42It is genuinely alarming. The massive EdTech
- 6:44platform, Canvas, which is owned by Instructure,
- 6:47was completely taken down this week. And we are
- 6:49talking about a platform used by 275 million
- 6:53users across roughly 9 ,000 institutions. Right.
- 6:56And it got hit by a data extortion attack from
- 6:59a cybercrime group called Shiny Hunters. The
- 7:02timeline on this is just pure chaos, so Shiny
- 7:05Hunters actually breached them on May 1st. And
- 7:08the very next day, May 2nd, the Chief Information
- 7:10Security Officer for Instructure claimed the
- 7:13whole thing was, quote, contained. Which was
- 7:15clearly not true. because by May 7th, students
- 7:18from Harvard down to local high schools were
- 7:20logging in to take their final exams and what
- 7:23did they see? A literal ransom demand plastered
- 7:25right on their screens, right in the middle of
- 7:27finals week. Which is just a nightmare for those
- 7:29kids. So Instructure pulls the plug in the whole
- 7:31system and they slap a scheduled maintenance
- 7:34label on the site. Yeah, which is just bad PR.
- 7:37I mean, calling a massive system -wide ransomware
- 7:40defacement scheduled maintenance feels like telling
- 7:43you your car is resting. when the engine is actively
- 7:46on fire. It really does. Why downplay it when
- 7:49millions of students are physically locked out
- 7:51of their finals? Because the reality is incredibly
- 7:53embarrassing for them. This wasn't some incredibly
- 7:55advanced zero -day hack. Shiny Hunters often
- 7:59uses a really low -tech strategy called voice
- 8:02phishing. Wait, voice phishing? Like they just
- 8:04call people on the phone? Basically, yeah. They
- 8:06target systems like Okta or Salesforce by calling
- 8:09a company's IT help desk, pretending to be an
- 8:12employee who lost their phone, and begging for
- 8:15a password reset or a multi -factor authentication
- 8:18bypass. Oh, wow. So they just social engineer
- 8:20the IT guy into handing over the keys to the
- 8:23castle? Exactly. And the worst part is this is
- 8:25a re -compromise. Shiny Hunters actually breached
- 8:28Instructure back in September of 2025, too. Wait,
- 8:31really? Last year? Yeah. They used that breach
- 8:33to leak University of Pennsylvania donor records.
- 8:36So Instructure knew these guys were a threat
- 8:38and they still left a door open. That is just
- 8:40wild to me. It really highlights the danger of
- 8:43single points of failure in our digital infrastructure.
- 8:46When one platform like Canvas holds the keys
- 8:49to 9 ,000 schools, the leverage these hackers
- 8:52have is just immense. Because if they break that
- 8:55one central lock, the whole system comes crashing
- 8:57down. Right. 9 ,000 schools paralyzed by one
- 9:01bad IT phone call. That is a terrifying thought.
- 9:04Well, before we wrap up, a quick thanks to Old
- 9:07Glory, an iconic music and sports fan merch store,
- 9:10perfect for the techie in your life. Use promo
- 9:13code SNARFL for 15 % off at OldGlory .com. So
- 9:17looking back at all the sources we unpacked today,
- 9:20there's a pretty clear theme here. Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:22Whether it's AI data centers over in Virginia
- 9:25driving up the cost of your kids' gaming console,
- 9:27or massive companies struggling to navigate these
- 9:29volatile supply chains despite making record
- 9:31profits. Or, you know, hackers bringing the global
- 9:34education system to its knees with a phone call.
- 9:36Right. We're all just deeply, deeply reliant
- 9:38on a very fragile, interconnected tech ecosystem.
- 9:41We really are. And we want to leave you with
- 9:43a final thought to ponder today. If a single
- 9:46cyber criminal group can paralyze 9 ,000 schools
- 9:50through one software platform, how many other
- 9:53single points of failure are quietly lurking
- 9:56in the workplace software you use every single
- 9:58day? Yeah, that'll definitely make you look twice
- 10:00at your login screen tomorrow. We're here to
