- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to my show Money Making Conversation Masterclass. I'm your
- 0:02Speaker 1: host with Sean McDonald. I recognized that we all have
- 0:05Speaker 1: different definition of success. For you, it may be the
- 0:08Speaker 1: size of your paycheck. Mine is helping or inspiring people
- 0:11Speaker 1: to develop a plan to reach their dreams. It's time
- 0:13Speaker 1: to stop reading other people's success stories really and start
- 0:16Speaker 1: writing your own. It's really about you. You can only
- 0:19Speaker 1: exceed expectations by believing in yourself. People always talking about
- 0:23Speaker 1: purpose or gifts you he you read it and see
- 0:25Speaker 1: it all the time on social media. If you have
- 0:27Speaker 1: a gift, leave with your gift and don't let your friends, family,
- 0:31Speaker 1: especially co workers stop you from planning or living your dream.
- 0:34Speaker 1: My guest is Don Benjamin. He's an actor, model, producer,
- 0:37Speaker 1: and recording artist. He got his start in Hollywood, as
- 0:40Speaker 1: they say, the Big Age Hollywood, by being selected as
- 0:43Speaker 1: a contestant in America's Next Top Model. This kicked off
- 0:47Speaker 1: a very busy TV career with appearances on Scared Famous,
- 0:50Speaker 1: While They and Out, Growing Up, Hip Hop and One Ten,
- 0:53Speaker 1: among others. Most recently done, co Creative executive produced and
- 0:57Speaker 1: Start in the Future film not the one in the Features.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It was just currently streaming on Amazon Plus, Sword and
- 1:04Speaker 1: BT plus. Please work with the Money Making Conversation Masterclass,
- 1:08Speaker 1: my man, the one on Don Benjamin. How you doing brother?
- 1:12Speaker 1: Going on? Man, thank you for having me? You just done? Okay?
- 1:15Speaker 1: First of all, you know, let's just get the elephant
- 1:17Speaker 1: out of the room. You're good looking, dude. You're a
- 1:19Speaker 1: good looking dude. Man. Come on, let let's go, come on,
- 1:23Speaker 1: let's go be real man, because I'll tell you something. Man.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I was. I was. I was young like you. Man.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I'm telling someone. I go into the club, Doug and
- 1:31Speaker 1: I was working it. I was working it. Did somebody
- 1:34Speaker 1: like you coming to club done? Oh boy? I was
- 1:38Speaker 1: mad as heck with a Don benchman walked in the club, man,
- 1:45Speaker 1: Because I bring that up because you know, if you
- 1:47Speaker 1: talk about that in your book, you talk about that
- 1:49Speaker 1: club life, running in there with your boys, telling everybody
- 1:52Speaker 1: you with little Wayne, management, record artists and all that stuff.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Because that young life, man, it's really uh when you
- 1:59Speaker 1: think about it. When you look back. I look back
- 2:01Speaker 1: at my life, I go so a lot of it
- 2:03Speaker 1: was stupid, but a lot of it was just done spontaneously,
- 2:07Speaker 1: and you write about it in your book because you know,
- 2:10Speaker 1: sometimes it's a blur. Yeah, it's it's a blur, you know.
- 2:13Speaker 1: And then that that blur. And I think that when
- 2:15Speaker 1: you started writing a book, the book kind of gave
- 2:19Speaker 1: you some clarity because you start remembering things you actually
- 2:21Speaker 1: forgot talk about. Yeah, I mean, you know, I feel
- 2:26Speaker 1: like a lot of times it is a blur. We're
- 2:28Speaker 1: just moving and pattern, we're moving in habit and we
- 2:32Speaker 1: don't even realize what we're doing until. You know, a
- 2:35Speaker 1: lot of times it takes something in life to kind
- 2:38Speaker 1: of shake you up, and then you got to kind
- 2:39Speaker 1: of take a look at how you've been maneuvering. And
- 2:42Speaker 1: for me, you know, I was shaking up, and I
- 2:44Speaker 1: was like, do I like how I was maneuvering? Do
- 2:47Speaker 1: I like certain things that I was doing is just
- 2:49Speaker 1: leading me to the man that I really want to be? Um,
- 2:53Speaker 1: you know. And and sometimes this happens for people in
- 2:56Speaker 1: their twenties, thirties, forties, sixties, you know. But for me,
- 3:01Speaker 1: it happened in my early thirties, and and you know,
- 3:05Speaker 1: I was just kind of looking at the way I
- 3:07Speaker 1: was maneuver and I felt like I was just maneuvering
- 3:10Speaker 1: out of generational curses. I was maneuvering based off of
- 3:13Speaker 1: things that I had seen around me, and I didn't
- 3:16Speaker 1: really like some of the things I was doing. And uh,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know when you're in your twenties and you're like, oh,
- 3:21Speaker 1: this is all fun and games, but a lot of
- 3:24Speaker 1: people don't know how to break and transition. And I
- 3:27Speaker 1: feel like life is about chapters and and you have
- 3:30Speaker 1: to know how to move into a chapter that's gonna
- 3:33Speaker 1: better yourself instead of just doing the same thing continuously.
- 3:36Speaker 1: And so for me, you know, writing My Truth, I
- 3:40Speaker 1: was able to kind of reflect on things that I
- 3:43Speaker 1: did like about myself and things that I did not
- 3:46Speaker 1: like about myself, and you know what I can do
- 3:49Speaker 1: to amp up the things that I do like about
- 3:52Speaker 1: myself and change up some things that I didn't like
- 3:55Speaker 1: about myself and and start to try new things. And
- 3:58Speaker 1: so it was the for me writing it was like
- 4:01Speaker 1: a therapy session in itself. Uh, you know, because I
- 4:04Speaker 1: was able to like really you know, reflecting and grow
- 4:08Speaker 1: and and and now hold myself accountable to be this person,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know what I mean, And so um, it's really
- 4:16Speaker 1: it was really a powerful time of my life and
- 4:19Speaker 1: really really transforming. For sure. I'm talking to Don Benjamin
- 4:22Speaker 1: this book and with discussion right now, it's called My Truth.
- 4:25Speaker 1: It is an honest um all this storytelling, you know
- 4:28Speaker 1: when you're talking about it, because sometimes when you do
- 4:30Speaker 1: these type of books, this is a memoir type book
- 4:33Speaker 1: because is his story, it's documented evidence, and you gotta
- 4:36Speaker 1: go and verify stuff and say, did you know don Yeah,
- 4:39Speaker 1: knew dog? Did you party with dog? Y'all party with dog?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Did you date done? Y'all dated dog? That's what I
- 4:44Speaker 1: mean is when you start talking to My Truth. But
- 4:46Speaker 1: it's in this story that that you start realizing that,
- 4:49Speaker 1: you know, you may have been a jerk that part
- 4:53Speaker 1: of the book, when you say that publicly, it's almost
- 4:56Speaker 1: because the person that you may have been a jerk too.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And I'm not saying that a negative manner, because we
- 5:01Speaker 1: all have done things were all kind of jerkish when
- 5:04Speaker 1: you think about our lives, because we we get selfish,
- 5:08Speaker 1: you know, we get selfish, we don't think about ourselves,
- 5:10Speaker 1: and your conversation is about moving past that. Correct on. Yeah,
- 5:15Speaker 1: and for me, you know, uh, when I was dealing
- 5:18Speaker 1: with you know, I dealt with a pretty public breakup
- 5:20Speaker 1: with my with my girlfriend at the time, my fiance
- 5:23Speaker 1: at the time. And you know what, once we broke up,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I was able to look back and be like, damn,
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know I I may be a good person, I
- 5:31Speaker 1: may do good things for people, and I work hard,
- 5:35Speaker 1: but every relationship, you know, I've messed up on my girls,
- 5:39Speaker 1: and I've continue these same patterns. And I look around
- 5:43Speaker 1: and you know, you're getting pats on the back for
- 5:46Speaker 1: being this so called playboy and player and you out.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And for me, I was like looking for a piece
- 5:54Speaker 1: of you know, guidance. And you know, I was thankful
- 5:58Speaker 1: enough to have Devon Franklin and my corner and Tony
- 6:01Speaker 1: Gaskin's and Terray Robertson, and these are guys who are
- 6:05Speaker 1: strong black male figures who speak about overcoming generational curses
- 6:11Speaker 1: and triumphs and in the temptation of our flesh. But
- 6:14Speaker 1: I didn't see anybody like in my you know, my
- 6:18Speaker 1: core age bracket or in the industry per se the
- 6:21Speaker 1: bon Franklin like really talking about how to be a young,
- 6:26Speaker 1: faithful black man in the midst of it all, how
- 6:28Speaker 1: to how to um you know, break generational curses, talking
- 6:32Speaker 1: about counseling and therapy and and making it seem okay
- 6:36Speaker 1: for men to be vulnerable and all these and so
- 6:39Speaker 1: for me, I was like, damn, I don't got nowhere
- 6:42Speaker 1: to go find it. Let me, let me put my
- 6:45Speaker 1: my truths onto the paper and hopes that the younger
- 6:48Speaker 1: generation following me can have something, you know what I mean,
- 6:52Speaker 1: Because I was like, where where do I go? Like
- 6:54Speaker 1: you see people break up all the time in the media,
- 6:57Speaker 1: but you don't see if they You don't see what
- 7:01Speaker 1: steps they take took to fix things, like did they start?
- 7:05Speaker 1: Did they get back together and keep doing the same thing?
- 7:07Speaker 1: Like what happened? We don't really see that, you know
- 7:09Speaker 1: what I mean? Like everything is all pictures and cream
- 7:12Speaker 1: in the in the limelight, but you don't see like
- 7:14Speaker 1: the work that people are really putting in to build
- 7:17Speaker 1: themselves up behind the behind the lights. So for me,
- 7:20Speaker 1: I wanted to do that and hopes it Um I
- 7:23Speaker 1: can now hold myself accountable, but it hopes that I
- 7:26Speaker 1: reached the young men following behind me or even women
- 7:30Speaker 1: that may be looking for some words from men, you
- 7:33Speaker 1: know what I mean, right, Because it's just it's a
- 7:35Speaker 1: conversation because sometimes women could blame themselves for the fairly
- 7:39Speaker 1: relationship and the fairy relationship is just that guy had
- 7:41Speaker 1: issues that he's not even willing to deal with it,
- 7:45Speaker 1: like in your case. You talk about it in your
- 7:47Speaker 1: book My Truth, which is really good reader read the
- 7:49Speaker 1: book and ever get to read a lot of books done,
- 7:52Speaker 1: and there's always at that point of view I always
- 7:54Speaker 1: look for, and that the point of view I take
- 7:56Speaker 1: away from your book by Truth is honesty. I take
- 7:59Speaker 1: away honesty to take away a lot of regret, a
- 8:01Speaker 1: lot of regret in your tone, and then a recovery
- 8:05Speaker 1: and then I can do better and I will do better.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Those are the things I take away, especially the I
- 8:11Speaker 1: can do better, I will do better part, And that's
- 8:14Speaker 1: returning to your faith. Talk about that, yeah, man, I mean,
- 8:18Speaker 1: you know, I've always been a strong believer in God.
- 8:21Speaker 1: My mother kept me in church. But I feel like
- 8:24Speaker 1: I feel like what happens is where like one ft
- 8:26Speaker 1: in one ft out where it's like, you know, I'm
- 8:28Speaker 1: gonna go to church, I'm gonna be prayed up, I'm
- 8:31Speaker 1: gonna do these things good, but I can tippy toe
- 8:35Speaker 1: over here, you know what I mean. And for me,
- 8:37Speaker 1: it was like, you know, I gotta be all in
- 8:40Speaker 1: with my faith, with the way I'm maneuver and with everything,
- 8:43Speaker 1: and so, um, you know, I try to speak on
- 8:46Speaker 1: that in my book. I try to speak on that publicly. Um,
- 8:51Speaker 1: you know, I wouldn't be where I am today without faith,
- 8:54Speaker 1: without belief, without God, and so uh, I think that.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I think that really leads me. And I just wanted
- 9:01Speaker 1: to make that known as well, not only in my book,
- 9:04Speaker 1: but I try to keep that known and like my
- 9:07Speaker 1: daily my daily practices in the way I'm aneuver. We'll
- 9:10Speaker 1: be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with
- 9:14Speaker 1: Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 9:20Speaker 1: with Rashan McDonald. I measure it this because you know,
- 9:23Speaker 1: faith is a lot of people go out on faith.
- 9:25Speaker 1: People talk about faith that journey, okay, and you're talking
- 9:29Speaker 1: to you know, you pray it up. Your mom made
- 9:30Speaker 1: sure that God was a part of your life. So
- 9:33Speaker 1: faith had a early stage of being an instrument to
- 9:37Speaker 1: your pan. When did you feel that, Well, I guess
- 9:40Speaker 1: the question I'm trying to ask this like when do
- 9:43Speaker 1: you ignore faith? And then when you you know, because
- 9:46Speaker 1: in life is there or or when you was living
- 9:49Speaker 1: it you were just living it because you were told
- 9:51Speaker 1: to and that understanding why you should be done. I
- 9:55Speaker 1: think I think it's it's more so where it's like
- 9:59Speaker 1: it's like I always have faith right that I'm gonna
- 10:01Speaker 1: be successful, that whatever, like everything that I go that
- 10:05Speaker 1: I want in this life I can have. I always
- 10:08Speaker 1: have had faith that, like even when the downtimes, like
- 10:11Speaker 1: like when I lost my father, I have faith that,
- 10:14Speaker 1: you know, everything is to be okay, there's a reason
- 10:16Speaker 1: why he passed. Like I've always had strong faith. But
- 10:19Speaker 1: I feel like a lot of people get it twisted
- 10:21Speaker 1: because they're like, oh, well, I have faith, but you're
- 10:24Speaker 1: not doing the work to align with the faith, you
- 10:28Speaker 1: know what I mean. Like, I can have all the
- 10:29Speaker 1: faith I want in the world, but if I'm not,
- 10:32Speaker 1: if I'm not eating right, I'm still probably gonna get something,
- 10:35Speaker 1: get sick, you know what I mean. I could have
- 10:37Speaker 1: all faith in the world, but if I'm not out
- 10:39Speaker 1: here working towards my dreams, I'm not gonna make no money,
- 10:42Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I could have all the
- 10:43Speaker 1: faith in the world, but if I'm cheating on my wife,
- 10:46Speaker 1: eventually she's gonna find out and we're gonna separate. So
- 10:49Speaker 1: like a lot of times people get it twisted where
- 10:52Speaker 1: they're like, oh, well I got faith, but what's the
- 10:54Speaker 1: work that you're putting into align with the faith. And
- 10:58Speaker 1: so for me, a lot of times I have faith,
- 11:00Speaker 1: but there would be times where I wasn't putting in
- 11:03Speaker 1: type of work you would marry them together, you wouldn't
- 11:06Speaker 1: marry the faith. What you say is what you say
- 11:10Speaker 1: is in the Bible, you know exactly, yea and so
- 11:13Speaker 1: and you know and and you know a lot of
- 11:15Speaker 1: a lot of I mean a lot of people fall
- 11:18Speaker 1: victim to it because we're not really taught it and
- 11:21Speaker 1: even like even some churches don't teach it to a
- 11:25Speaker 1: full extent. And you know, like so like when when
- 11:28Speaker 1: I took the time to read my or write my book,
- 11:31Speaker 1: I started reading a ton of books like I probably
- 11:34Speaker 1: I mean for me, I never read really at all.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So I think I read like damn their sixty books
- 11:40Speaker 1: that year. Um, you know, I did a lot of studying,
- 11:43Speaker 1: a lot of watching a lot of videos, audio books,
- 11:47Speaker 1: talking to people, um, just really stepping outside of what
- 11:50Speaker 1: I thought I knew about myself and about life to
- 11:53Speaker 1: really like learn new things and and really like transforming.
- 11:58Speaker 1: And I feel like there there needs to be or
- 12:01Speaker 1: more people doing that. You know, a lot of people
- 12:03Speaker 1: get stuck in and what they think they know, and
- 12:06Speaker 1: they wake up one day and they're like, damn, I
- 12:08Speaker 1: never really took the time to learn myself and change
- 12:12Speaker 1: things that I didn't like about myself. And so I
- 12:15Speaker 1: really encouraged that man. And and and it's crazy because
- 12:18Speaker 1: like I feel like an old soul, like I'm thirty five,
- 12:21Speaker 1: but sometimes I would be feeling like I'm a lot older.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I mean, that's all right, that's all right, that's all right.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Don't you know what I will tell you this man,
- 12:29Speaker 1: you know, is that you know I'm older than you.
- 12:32Speaker 1: And uh, but some of your stories are very similar
- 12:34Speaker 1: to my youth, you know. Um, all right, My relationship
- 12:38Speaker 1: with my dad was you know, I respected my father.
- 12:42Speaker 1: You know, he worked every day, he put food on
- 12:44Speaker 1: the table. I have six sisters and two other brothers,
- 12:46Speaker 1: so I was the oldest person that was this male
- 12:48Speaker 1: figure in the house outside of my father. So I
- 12:51Speaker 1: had to learn everything. And so I learned it in
- 12:53Speaker 1: the streets with my friends. And I felt that, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: part of manhood was being sexual women, you know, and uh,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and that part and that that's that that comes very
- 13:04Speaker 1: clear in your book. You know, it's part of in
- 13:06Speaker 1: our mind. If we're not taught right, if we're not
- 13:09Speaker 1: have a clear understanding of the role of a woman
- 13:11Speaker 1: in a man's life, then it's sets. And so I
- 13:15Speaker 1: want to tell you that to say that you know,
- 13:18Speaker 1: we all grow the keys. You growing, and you're growing,
- 13:21Speaker 1: and you understand that that's not the purpose of a relationship.
- 13:25Speaker 1: The purpose of relationship is communication. The purpose of relationship
- 13:28Speaker 1: is respect conversed. Purpose of relationship is love. And that's
- 13:31Speaker 1: really what it all amounts to. And that's where when
- 13:34Speaker 1: I go through your book, I see that, I see
- 13:37Speaker 1: that was that was that intentional that order or you
- 13:41Speaker 1: were just just pouring your heart out and done and
- 13:43Speaker 1: just letting us all here it out and then being
- 13:45Speaker 1: honest with us. No, it definitely, it definitely wasn't intentional,
- 13:49Speaker 1: because I think that was one of the biggest points
- 13:52Speaker 1: is like you know, for men, like right, like once
- 13:55Speaker 1: we turn a certain ages, it's all about how many
- 13:57Speaker 1: girls you got, you know, like all he got a girlfriend,
- 14:00Speaker 1: All you got three girlfriends now? And you know what
- 14:02Speaker 1: I'm saying. And then your boys are like, what girls
- 14:04Speaker 1: are you talking to? And and it's this this thing
- 14:07Speaker 1: and now we've created as a man to where it's
- 14:10Speaker 1: like your stature kind of it is based off of
- 14:12Speaker 1: how many girls you're getting and how much sex you're having,
- 14:15Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And so it's like you said,
- 14:17Speaker 1: that's not really built off of oh, do you gotta
- 14:20Speaker 1: solid are you building to build an empire with this woman?
- 14:23Speaker 1: And and you know, mutual like mutual respect and all
- 14:27Speaker 1: these things. And so for me it was me pour
- 14:29Speaker 1: my heart out, but also yes, definitely me trying to
- 14:32Speaker 1: aligne these things up to show like this is not
- 14:36Speaker 1: really like what we think we know is not what
- 14:39Speaker 1: we really know majority of the time. Let me just
- 14:42Speaker 1: question Don talking to Don Benjamin's book. We'll talk about
- 14:44Speaker 1: the other things he has a scared Caroline. What else
- 14:46Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about the movie that's on Amazon, the
- 14:48Speaker 1: BT plus called North of the ten Um. You know,
- 14:53Speaker 1: with social media and you see women, you know, posing bikinis,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you know, these are individuals. These used to be back
- 15:02Speaker 1: in the day. You see them featured in skin magazines
- 15:05Speaker 1: like Playboy and Penthouse. I'm not saying they're that extreme online,
- 15:08Speaker 1: but suddenly they're they're they're they're scantly clad and so
- 15:12Speaker 1: when you look at what we're just talking about, men
- 15:15Speaker 1: looking at a woman for not her body, not sexual
- 15:20Speaker 1: is women doing a disservice on social media when we're
- 15:24Speaker 1: trying to get to know them, we're constantly being their
- 15:28Speaker 1: body is being constantly thrown in our faces by them,
- 15:31Speaker 1: right right. I mean it definitely, It definitely don't help,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know what I mean. But it's crazy because like
- 15:41Speaker 1: if you look back to it, like sexuality and women
- 15:45Speaker 1: showing their sexuality has been since day one, you know
- 15:49Speaker 1: what I mean, you need, But I feel like I
- 15:53Speaker 1: feel like ultimately what comes down to it is is
- 15:56Speaker 1: knowing ourselves and controlling our flesh because of are like women.
- 16:00Speaker 1: A lot of times, the women that are doing that,
- 16:03Speaker 1: once you really sit down with them and get to
- 16:05Speaker 1: know them, they're they're dealing with so much like deep
- 16:09Speaker 1: deeper rooted issues within themselves that that's the only way
- 16:12Speaker 1: that they can, you know, bring validation for themselves where
- 16:16Speaker 1: they need. They're showing their through their sexuality because they're
- 16:21Speaker 1: lacking other validation. And so you know, everybody's dealing with
- 16:25Speaker 1: their own fights and struggles. And for men, we're looking
- 16:29Speaker 1: at you because we're already like sexualized really you you're
- 16:36Speaker 1: trying to lure us in because you think that that's
- 16:37Speaker 1: going to lure in a relationship. Were really And it's
- 16:40Speaker 1: a continued cycle that it's flawed, you know what I mean.
- 16:43Speaker 1: And social media definitely adds to uh. It can benefit
- 16:49Speaker 1: a lot of things, but it has a lot of
- 16:51Speaker 1: issues to life, you know what I mean with the
- 16:53Speaker 1: sexualized everything is so sexual base nowadays. Everything is makes
- 16:58Speaker 1: it seem like you don't have to work hard to
- 17:01Speaker 1: get what you want, you know, more like it's there's
- 17:05Speaker 1: so many things that go into social media that make
- 17:07Speaker 1: life hard, which is why so many kids nowadays are
- 17:10Speaker 1: dealing with depression and an anxiety because they feel like
- 17:14Speaker 1: they gotta keep up with you know, these girls are fourteen, thirteen,
- 17:17Speaker 1: fourteen feeling like they have to sexualize themselves because they
- 17:21Speaker 1: see it on social media. Everybody feels like they gotta
- 17:23Speaker 1: be rappers and and have big chains and the nicest
- 17:26Speaker 1: cars at fifteen because they see everybody doing it on
- 17:29Speaker 1: social media. And so you know that, I guess that's
- 17:33Speaker 1: a whole another topic in itself. You get you just
- 17:37Speaker 1: give me, you get me locked in on that. The
- 17:42Speaker 1: producer to me was in my head going this point
- 17:45Speaker 1: talking about a TV series right there, talking about a
- 17:47Speaker 1: documentary right there, a whole it's a whole nother lame.
- 17:50Speaker 1: But yes, I guess the long story short, the sexualization
- 17:53Speaker 1: definitely does not help with a man because you know,
- 17:57Speaker 1: we see a woman and we think like it's it's
- 18:01Speaker 1: it's like our mind goes there right away, right And
- 18:05Speaker 1: if you ain't, and if you ain't, and if you
- 18:06Speaker 1: don't know how to, if you're not working on yourself
- 18:09Speaker 1: and you don't know how to control your yourself and
- 18:11Speaker 1: your flesh, you're gonna gonna fall victim right away. Understand
- 18:17Speaker 1: that I don't want understand in the book too long,
- 18:19Speaker 1: because I know I want to talk about a couple
- 18:20Speaker 1: of the subjects. You know, just just skin, caroline, spray
- 18:23Speaker 1: and go. You know what I'm saying, So tell us
- 18:26Speaker 1: about that, Mr doun Benjamin. You know what's funny is
- 18:30Speaker 1: when I got in a relationship, like I never thought
- 18:33Speaker 1: about skincare before, Like I would just wash my face
- 18:36Speaker 1: with asso. You need to stuff right there, man, I
- 18:38Speaker 1: need to I need to come through the screen at you.
- 18:40Speaker 1: You know, brother, see what I'm saying, see this just
- 18:43Speaker 1: right here, just God's work. You know, I have to
- 18:45Speaker 1: worry about that I use so I just put water
- 18:48Speaker 1: on this face work. But as I started to get older,
- 18:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean, and I started up see
- 18:58Speaker 1: what my girl was doing, to realize like there's actually
- 19:01Speaker 1: stuff that's gonna help you age better and stuff like that,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I started, you know, I started doing stuff with her
- 19:08Speaker 1: and she had me do the face masks, cleansing, all
- 19:12Speaker 1: these things. But I'm still like, yo, this is a lot,
- 19:14Speaker 1: like this is too much going on. And so I
- 19:18Speaker 1: was like, I still want to take care of my skin,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and you know, I go to the stores or brands
- 19:23Speaker 1: with semi stuff, but it's still a lot of steps.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And so for me, I was like, well, what can
- 19:26Speaker 1: I create that already like that would blend into a
- 19:29Speaker 1: man's life easily or maybe make women's life easier. And
- 19:34Speaker 1: so for me, I was like we we you know,
- 19:36Speaker 1: like a spray on, a spray on skincare line would
- 19:41Speaker 1: be super efficient, super easy, you don't gotta think too
- 19:45Speaker 1: much about it. And then just two steps. So I
- 19:47Speaker 1: was literally like a serum that helps with aging, that
- 19:50Speaker 1: helps with anti aging, and a moisturizer that just keeps
- 19:54Speaker 1: your skin, you know, hydrated, throughout the day. It's really
- 19:57Speaker 1: I felt like all a lot of people need I
- 19:59Speaker 1: feel like don't need a lot of steps. So I
- 20:01Speaker 1: was like, how can I create a line that will
- 20:04Speaker 1: make your life easier. So it's literally like a two
- 20:06Speaker 1: two steps spray on skincare routine is like as easy
- 20:10Speaker 1: as it can get, right, And so I came up
- 20:12Speaker 1: with Lave and it literally has a spray for the
- 20:15Speaker 1: anti aging, and it has a spray to keep you
- 20:17Speaker 1: hydrated and you just go about your day. Man, We'll
- 20:20Speaker 1: be right back with more Money Making Conversations Masterclass with
- 20:24Speaker 1: Rushan McDonald. Now, let's return to Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 20:31Speaker 1: with Rushan McDonald. See see, I might have to buy something,
- 20:35Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. I might have to go there. Mr.
- 20:38Speaker 1: You look you look good. You look you look in
- 20:40Speaker 1: your thirties too. You know you know, Lave may be
- 20:46Speaker 1: made for me, brother, because I'll be I've bean now,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I got I go in my my, my, my restroom.
- 20:53Speaker 1: I got all kinds of stuff sitting back there making
- 20:55Speaker 1: people nervous. You know, you're like to fire my restue.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It might blow up there. I mean I didn't need
- 21:03Speaker 1: me some lay, brother, just to move some of that
- 21:05Speaker 1: stuff off my counter. We don't have to get you
- 21:08Speaker 1: something sent over there. Seriously, man, because because because as
- 21:12Speaker 1: a kid, man, I understood you know, you know it
- 21:15Speaker 1: just kids, you have your pimples and all that stuff,
- 21:17Speaker 1: and understood you know, cold and warm water, washing soap,
- 21:21Speaker 1: you know, and all of you know, all these skins
- 21:23Speaker 1: because black people naturally have all these skin and things
- 21:26Speaker 1: like that. So I find what you're doing is very relatable.
- 21:29Speaker 1: So even as I got old, there was always about
- 21:31Speaker 1: skin care. It's always marsterizing, you know, I stand out
- 21:34Speaker 1: in the sun and things like that. So the fact
- 21:37Speaker 1: that you you know, the reality is, especially with black people,
- 21:41Speaker 1: we always try to figure out how to do it
- 21:43Speaker 1: better but quicker, and if you have a philosophy here
- 21:46Speaker 1: that you put in place that I'm laughing about it,
- 21:49Speaker 1: but I'm very seriously because I got several things I got,
- 21:52Speaker 1: you know, I got that, I got the you know,
- 21:54Speaker 1: the the the skin brightener, then the brightener that stops
- 21:58Speaker 1: us brightening. And then I got the lost arise, and
- 22:00Speaker 1: then I got to wipe off you know, I put
- 22:02Speaker 1: this on before you go to be, and put this
- 22:04Speaker 1: on when you wake up, you know, It's like sometime
- 22:06Speaker 1: I just man, look, look, look, look, I'm just gonna
- 22:08Speaker 1: do this and and whatever. Help don't work. I'm cool
- 22:12Speaker 1: because that's what you're saying. You gonna spread the cerum on.
- 22:16Speaker 1: You let us, You're gonna spread your moisturizer on, and
- 22:19Speaker 1: you're gonna go about your night. You're gonna go to sleep,
- 22:21Speaker 1: you gonna wake up, spread the moisturizer on and go
- 22:24Speaker 1: hey brother, I'm buying. I'm buying, okay, Benjamin, I' because
- 22:28Speaker 1: that's what my life needs. Now. What age group? Are
- 22:31Speaker 1: you talking in? The age group there? Or you know
- 22:34Speaker 1: that for you for this line, or you're saying making
- 22:36Speaker 1: the available say you're just trying to open up, because
- 22:38Speaker 1: I would say if he pacifically go after some group,
- 22:41Speaker 1: at least you can start understanding how to sell to him.
- 22:43Speaker 1: How are you marking in it? I mean it's more
- 22:46Speaker 1: so you know, twenties and up. Uh. But at the
- 22:50Speaker 1: end of the day, it's like I don't feel like
- 22:54Speaker 1: I don't feel like There's the thing is when you're um,
- 22:58Speaker 1: when you're breaking into like you know a lot of
- 23:01Speaker 1: teenagers and they're having breakouts. Uh, like this skin care
- 23:06Speaker 1: isn't technically like a um, like a proactive you know
- 23:10Speaker 1: what I'm saying, it's for that. It's more so for
- 23:13Speaker 1: aging right now. Like the serum we have has a
- 23:16Speaker 1: marshmallow roots extra extract and the serum that helps with
- 23:19Speaker 1: like anti aging. It tightens the skin under that and
- 23:24Speaker 1: uh um and the moisturizer keeps you hydrated. But the
- 23:27Speaker 1: beautiful thing is I would love to expand as the
- 23:31Speaker 1: brand grows and maybe be able to help some things
- 23:33Speaker 1: for teenagers, you know, maybe get some kind of ingredients
- 23:37Speaker 1: that do help um the breakouts and stuff like that.
- 23:40Speaker 1: But right now it's more so helping with people who
- 23:42Speaker 1: are you know, you're waking up and you and you're like,
- 23:46Speaker 1: you know what, I want to make sure I'm taking
- 23:48Speaker 1: care of my skin now before I start to get
- 23:51Speaker 1: older and start to see all these wrinkles come in
- 23:54Speaker 1: more of a preventative, you know what I mean. And
- 23:57Speaker 1: and maybe if you are seeing some wrinkles and you
- 24:00Speaker 1: on your skin is tighten up a little bit, um
- 24:02Speaker 1: your eyes are around the eyes area, you start to
- 24:05Speaker 1: use this serum and whatnot. So yeah, it's definitely not
- 24:09Speaker 1: really like teenagers can use it. It's not harmful to anybody.
- 24:12Speaker 1: There's no harmful ingredients. But it's more so it's more
- 24:15Speaker 1: so about making people's life easy and introducing them to
- 24:19Speaker 1: skincare in an easy way to where you don't gotta
- 24:21Speaker 1: overthink it, you know what I mean. Let's talk because
- 24:23Speaker 1: I really just you know, just hear some ideas about this.
- 24:27Speaker 1: And first of all, I think it's a fantastic idea
- 24:29Speaker 1: because you know, my whole brain is I just start
- 24:31Speaker 1: marketing immediately, you know, because I know that, you know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: my my age group, skin care is as it's an
- 24:37Speaker 1: issue tightening under their eyes and all that. It's something
- 24:41Speaker 1: we see on TV just marketed to thirty five, the
- 24:44Speaker 1: fifty five, that age group right there, they need that.
- 24:46Speaker 1: They want that. They're fighting to stay young. They're fighting
- 24:49Speaker 1: to get back to their twenties. The fifties a fighting
- 24:52Speaker 1: to get back to their forties, you know, the fortes,
- 24:54Speaker 1: a fight to get back to their thirties. So so
- 24:56Speaker 1: if you have time later on, man, want to hit
- 24:57Speaker 1: me up and talk about it, because I feel you
- 24:59Speaker 1: have a great idea and I always like to get
- 25:01Speaker 1: involved with projects that personally impact me. That way, I
- 25:04Speaker 1: can talk about it from an organic and authentic standpoint
- 25:08Speaker 1: and we start talking about marketing and branding. This right
- 25:10Speaker 1: here here told with me on a big way, and
- 25:13Speaker 1: I wish you much much good luck. But before we go,
- 25:15Speaker 1: I want to talk about North of the Ten on
- 25:17Speaker 1: Amazon b T plus. You know, because when I when
- 25:20Speaker 1: I brought you own, it was modeling, it was acting,
- 25:22Speaker 1: recording artists, you know, then producer, which is really where
- 25:27Speaker 1: we all want to go because in fact, you're controlling
- 25:29Speaker 1: your voice and also you're you're actually running things. Talk
- 25:33Speaker 1: about it, you know, it's funny, um coming from from Minnesota,
- 25:37Speaker 1: and like in Minnesota people you go to school, you
- 25:43Speaker 1: get a nine or five job, you have some kids,
- 25:47Speaker 1: you have a family, and that's pretty much life, you
- 25:50Speaker 1: know what I mean. And so for me, I never
- 25:52Speaker 1: really wanted that life. And then when I came to California,
- 25:56Speaker 1: I seem like you can literally do whatever you want
- 26:00Speaker 1: on in l A and it's in the world. And
- 26:02Speaker 1: so for me, you know, I've always been a creative person.
- 26:07Speaker 1: Uh like I've always been in the arts. I've always
- 26:09Speaker 1: been into me music and film, and so I came
- 26:12Speaker 1: to l A when I was nineteen to pursue acting
- 26:16Speaker 1: and music. And so when the modeling took off when
- 26:19Speaker 1: I went on America's Next Top Model, UM, and it
- 26:23Speaker 1: blew me up as a as a fashion model. I
- 26:25Speaker 1: still my passion was acting in film, right, And so
- 26:30Speaker 1: for me, um, you know, I was with agents, I
- 26:32Speaker 1: was auditioning for different projects. I would get little roles
- 26:35Speaker 1: here and there, but it was never anything substantial or
- 26:38Speaker 1: anything that I wanted to do. And so for me,
- 26:40Speaker 1: I was like, man, I'm gonna create my own movie.
- 26:43Speaker 1: Like I'm not gonna wait for nobody else to tell
- 26:45Speaker 1: me what I can and can't do. I've been doing
- 26:47Speaker 1: everything else on my own, So I'm gonna create my
- 26:49Speaker 1: own movies. And so I got with my writing partner,
- 26:52Speaker 1: Braxton Smith, and uh, North of the Ten. We kind
- 26:56Speaker 1: of wrote kind of about my life, like moving to
- 26:58Speaker 1: l A. Uh you know, I was living in a
- 27:01Speaker 1: one bedroom with five of my buddies in Inglewood, California,
- 27:05Speaker 1: and you know, faking it till you make it, lying
- 27:08Speaker 1: and acting like we're bigger than what we really already
- 27:10Speaker 1: getting notoriety and getting the parties and and meet people
- 27:14Speaker 1: and uh. And so the movie was kind of like
- 27:17Speaker 1: a fairytale based off my real life. Like I was
- 27:21Speaker 1: born in the Midwest, and I was born in Chicago
- 27:24Speaker 1: moved to l As when the film. It was about
- 27:26Speaker 1: me and my buddies living in Chicago trying to make
- 27:29Speaker 1: it to Hollywood, which is north of the Tin. Hollywood
- 27:32Speaker 1: is north of the Tin Freeway, so trying to make
- 27:35Speaker 1: it to Hollywood from Chicago and then you know, getting
- 27:38Speaker 1: caught up in your lives while trying to make it.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And so it was a comedy kind of picking fund
- 27:43Speaker 1: at my life, but also kind of like, you know,
- 27:45Speaker 1: a motivational story showing a journey of brotherhood, uh sticking
- 27:50Speaker 1: true to your dreams and whatnot. And so I was
- 27:54Speaker 1: blessed enough to UM align with my brother Ryan Lamar,
- 27:58Speaker 1: who helped me produce the film um and and BT
- 28:03Speaker 1: got behind the film and helped us launch it, and
- 28:05Speaker 1: so it is on BT Plus, it's on Amazon Prime
- 28:09Speaker 1: right now. But it's a really it's a feel good movie.
- 28:11Speaker 1: It's a fun movie. I play aspiring model who uh
- 28:16Speaker 1: is trying to make it and I end up meeting
- 28:19Speaker 1: a young lady who ends up being an heiress to
- 28:21Speaker 1: a uh um somebody over in and Abu Dhabi. And
- 28:29Speaker 1: you know me, if you find ourselves trying to fight
- 28:32Speaker 1: I love after life for this girl, making it seem
- 28:34Speaker 1: like I'm something bigger than I really a big ball
- 28:39Speaker 1: of dollars. Okay, that right, I wake up, We over
- 28:42Speaker 1: and we can go way from Chicago. Man, it's a
- 28:50Speaker 1: fun movie. It's a fun movie and it has some
- 28:53Speaker 1: fun to it and some motivation to it. So I
- 28:55Speaker 1: definitely encourage everybody to go check it out. Um and
- 28:59Speaker 1: it's great responses. Something thankful for all the responses should
- 29:03Speaker 1: be the link to trailer. I'll dropped it in my newsletter.
- 29:05Speaker 1: You know and support this. You know when you said
- 29:07Speaker 1: north to the TENN you talked about I ten freeway,
- 29:10Speaker 1: I know that freeway, brother Iday coach to coach. Okay,
- 29:15Speaker 1: I thought I thought coming up. I thought coming to
- 29:17Speaker 1: l A was Hollywood's. I didn't realize if you south
- 29:20Speaker 1: of the ten, you end up in South Central, you
- 29:22Speaker 1: up in Inglewood. I live years by Fred I do
- 29:27Speaker 1: exactly everything you're talking about. You're not confusing me. Yeah,
- 29:33Speaker 1: man Chester, all those famous streets over there, bubble but
- 29:36Speaker 1: a kid. I'm glad. I'm glad we got to talk
- 29:39Speaker 1: to him because, Man, I'll tell you, Man enjoyed this conversation.
- 29:42Speaker 1: You know, I've always seen you from Afar, and I
- 29:44Speaker 1: always feel like to talk to young brothers like you, Man,
- 29:46Speaker 1: because I would say, you my future. You know, I've
- 29:48Speaker 1: just what I've done in my life. Man, hopefully has
- 29:51Speaker 1: made an opportunity for you to do your dreams and
- 29:53Speaker 1: build your dreams and live your dreams. In a book
- 29:56Speaker 1: like this is really inspirational because I saw myself in
- 29:58Speaker 1: it and I was a to term my life around.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I was that person like you running in the club
- 30:03Speaker 1: chasing out the women, disrespectful because not disrespectful because I
- 30:07Speaker 1: was being disrespectful. It was the way I was taught
- 30:09Speaker 1: to think. Nobody told me anything different. And then one
- 30:12Speaker 1: day I woke up and I became a better man.
- 30:14Speaker 1: And you are a better man. And the fact that
- 30:17Speaker 1: you're an entrepreneur, the fact of your movie producer you
- 30:20Speaker 1: you moved on from just that title of ap model
- 30:22Speaker 1: and an actor. You're now you know you're an entrepreneur
- 30:25Speaker 1: and those are things are important. And I just wanted
- 30:27Speaker 1: to say, Man, as we close out this interview, good
- 30:29Speaker 1: luck Man, because you have a friend here that would
- 30:32Speaker 1: support you. Give me the trailer so I can support
- 30:34Speaker 1: your movies and get more more downloads. More views to
- 30:38Speaker 1: your brand and more likes. How about that a few
- 30:40Speaker 1: more followers. Huh, I appreciate you. I'll definitely I'll send
- 30:43Speaker 1: it and we'll definitely talk more about the skin Cabran too. Absolutely,
- 30:47Speaker 1: I'm serious about that, man, because like I said, uh,
- 30:49Speaker 1: you know, when things are natural to me, man, I
- 30:51Speaker 1: just that feels very natural to me. I see it
- 30:54Speaker 1: on commercials and uh, you gotta you gotta big enough
- 30:57Speaker 1: of a brand, and uh we about three or four
- 31:00Speaker 1: ideas popped out of this interview. Don't forget that little
- 31:02Speaker 1: documentary you know that you did you do out in
- 31:04Speaker 1: front of me. You know, I'm saying that bad boy
- 31:07Speaker 1: had me fired up there. So that's a documentary right there,
- 31:10Speaker 1: because we're dealing with that. We're dealing with that, and
- 31:12Speaker 1: so things are authentic when you stay on the right path.
- 31:15Speaker 1: But again, thank you done for finding the time to
- 31:18Speaker 1: talk to talk to this the whole guy man, Talk
- 31:20Speaker 1: to this the whole guy man. Okay, I'm trying to
- 31:24Speaker 1: talk up as much game and wisdom man, So I
- 31:26Speaker 1: appreciate you as well. We'll definitely staying staying all right,
- 31:29Speaker 1: don be careful, Mary, talk soon. It's his book. Don
- 31:32Speaker 1: bensment my truth. He's a winner. Brother, he is at
- 31:34Speaker 1: one of us sisters.
