- 1:14Speaker 1: because of entertainment. Can can pigeonhole you, And I can
- 1:18Speaker 1: tell you right now his career has not been pigeonhole.
- 1:21Speaker 1: My next guest body of work has filled the screens
- 1:23Speaker 1: of televisions and movie screens all over the world. From
- 1:27Speaker 1: Eddie Uh from Eddie Southern on the ABC Family's UH,
- 1:31Speaker 1: Lincoln Heights, as Luke on the HBO drama and treatment
- 1:35Speaker 1: as a detective Hank Griffin on the long running NBC
- 1:38Speaker 1: series Grim and the movie's Fences directed by my board
- 1:42Speaker 1: Denzel Washington, and Creed Too, which starred Michael B. Jordan,
- 1:45Speaker 1: which stars Michael B. Jordan's He was born and raised
- 1:48Speaker 1: in Open, California. He was in the theater program at
- 1:51Speaker 1: Boston University and studied for a summer at the British
- 1:54Speaker 1: Academy of Dramatic Arts program at Oxford University. He's on
- 1:59Speaker 1: the show to Data talk about his new series, Lincoln
- 2:02Speaker 1: Ryan Hunt for the Bone Collector, which premieres Friday, January
- 2:06Speaker 1: tenth at eight pm. Eastern and Pacific seven pm Central, NBC.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Please work for the very first time the money making conversation,
- 2:14Speaker 1: Russell haunts me. Hey, hey, Russe, lay out there, man
- 2:22Speaker 1: lay you out there, Russell. You know what I'm saying.
- 2:24Speaker 1: You know, you know how to well you know. For also,
- 2:29Speaker 1: you know, first of all, congratulations on and I don't
- 2:32Speaker 1: say congratulated on what you have done, on what you
- 2:34Speaker 1: will be doing, because your resume has allowed you to
- 2:38Speaker 1: establish your your consistency and your authenticity as a as
- 2:42Speaker 1: a as a professional in this business. And we know
- 2:44Speaker 1: that's tough to do. We know it's tough to get
- 2:46Speaker 1: on with series at last, because sometimes you can't plan.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Talked to just before we get started into the interview
- 2:52Speaker 1: and everything, talk about your your experience in Hollywood and
- 2:55Speaker 1: the entertainment business a little bit. Well, you know, first
- 3:01Speaker 1: for me, first and foremost, what was most important to
- 3:04Speaker 1: me before and I said this, you know, just in retrospect,
- 3:09Speaker 1: was having studied as an actor. You know, you know,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you as you stated in the intro, studying at boxing
- 3:15Speaker 1: Boston University, getting my degree in theater arts, having an
- 3:19Speaker 1: opportunity to study at the British Academy for dramatic arts.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But more importantly for me was being able to spend
- 3:27Speaker 1: two years with August Wilson. Um. I'd like to say
- 3:31Speaker 1: that that time I spent with August doing the play
- 3:33Speaker 1: Jitney all over the country and then off Broadway gave
- 3:37Speaker 1: me my masters in life if you will, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and in acting and in life. And so it prepared
- 3:46Speaker 1: me can be able to bring forth that that authenticity
- 3:51Speaker 1: and and have a depth of feeling and personality that feels,
- 3:56Speaker 1: you know, that can't be matched, that you can't um
- 4:00Speaker 1: manufactured it to begin, you, you know. And so it
- 4:04Speaker 1: helped me to understand who I was and who I am,
- 4:07Speaker 1: where I come from, so that I was able to
- 4:11Speaker 1: when I walked into el when I came to l A,
- 4:14Speaker 1: nobody could tell me who I was, you know, and
- 4:18Speaker 1: put that upart me. I already knew, and so I
- 4:21Speaker 1: had a clear understanding of that. And it's really really
- 4:24Speaker 1: impressive because it shows in your style of work. And uh,
- 4:28Speaker 1: I gotta tell you a little a little fun side story.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Stephen A. Smith, good friend of mine, the talent that
- 4:33Speaker 1: manager as well, and we was on the phone before
- 4:36Speaker 1: this interview was even locked down, and he was saying hey,
- 4:38Speaker 1: we you. I got an idea, I go, what what's Steve?
- 4:41Speaker 1: What's I did? You got to day a? Man? Remember
- 4:44Speaker 1: that show on ESPN. Playmakers, playmakers? Man, we need to
- 4:49Speaker 1: bring them back, I said, I said, words of all
- 4:55Speaker 1: outstanding suggestion. But the pot is that may not want
- 5:01Speaker 1: to coming back because that's series right there. Man, I'm
- 5:04Speaker 1: gonna tell you something, brother, incredibly uh you know, you know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: only eleven episodes are and but it is stuck, and
- 5:12Speaker 1: it's stuck in a part of Americana as great television,
- 5:18Speaker 1: authentic real television. Um, you know, just just just talk
- 5:23Speaker 1: about that experience a little bit, because from a viewer standpoint,
- 5:26Speaker 1: you know, to have him tell him talk to me
- 5:28Speaker 1: about that, you know, let him know that it's you
- 5:31Speaker 1: know that that because we always talked about producing different
- 5:33Speaker 1: television shows and different things that you can reboot. And
- 5:36Speaker 1: that's why I was That's why I was in discussion
- 5:38Speaker 1: about it. But man, that was an incredible uh television
- 5:41Speaker 1: production that was on ESPN. Were you know, ironically enough,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I while we were shooting together, Jess, after we finished shooting,
- 5:48Speaker 1: while it was airing, I ran into Stephen Ay in
- 5:50Speaker 1: Times Square just from the right there brother, your brother,
- 5:58Speaker 1: I love you on that show. Playmate man killing on
- 6:01Speaker 1: that show. And I was personally last comment person the
- 6:05Speaker 1: only time I've ever met Stephen A. Smith. But you know,
- 6:09Speaker 1: we just had an opportunity. John Issen draft and created
- 6:12Speaker 1: a show. I mean, he just he was just telling
- 6:15Speaker 1: the truth and as to what he saw, and he
- 6:17Speaker 1: gave an authentic portrayal of what was happening to athletes,
- 6:21Speaker 1: you know, in professional football. And you know, I appreciate
- 6:26Speaker 1: give it. Getting an opportunity to honestly to tell the truth,
- 6:31Speaker 1: you know, and not glamorized it and not sensationalizing and
- 6:36Speaker 1: not gloss it over. They were really coming from a
- 6:39Speaker 1: representational standpoint, honestly, and I think that's what really I
- 6:44Speaker 1: think that's what really resonated with audience absolutely which honest
- 6:47Speaker 1: and real it was. And it was also outstanding acting.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Outstanding acting did that because of the fact that I
- 6:53Speaker 1: always tell people in order to lack of show, you
- 6:56Speaker 1: have to be able to take the journey with the actor.
- 6:59Speaker 1: If the jack that's actors bring you in and and
- 7:01Speaker 1: you feel a relationship with him. And on that show,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I felt as a view and I felt a relationship
- 7:06Speaker 1: and it was a hit show. So yeah, I say
- 7:08Speaker 1: that because of the fact that you know, you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: when you say you get the ratings back and you go, man,
- 7:13Speaker 1: we're hit, then you in your mind you think, oh man,
- 7:16Speaker 1: I've landed a jack pop and that is not not
- 7:19Speaker 1: Hollywood works sometimes, you know, you know, here's the show
- 7:24Speaker 1: had the numbers, was delivering the goods, the acting was great,
- 7:27Speaker 1: and it was and it went away that probably said
- 7:30Speaker 1: a tone for you with Hollywood that wow, what tough
- 7:33Speaker 1: time is real? Is not real? Correct? Absolutely? You know
- 7:38Speaker 1: what what you learned very early is that you know,
- 7:41Speaker 1: Hollywood is the business of show and it's it's it's
- 7:46Speaker 1: the business doesn't make sense. The show ain't gonna work right,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and there are a lot of people who have to
- 7:54Speaker 1: be happy, you know, when you put a show on
- 7:57Speaker 1: the air, or when you put a movie on the
- 7:59Speaker 1: screen or what how you and again, you're right, I
- 8:01Speaker 1: learned very early that nothing is guaranteed. But but also
- 8:07Speaker 1: though how I was reard how long was raised coming
- 8:09Speaker 1: from Oakland, being black in America, you know that that's
- 8:15Speaker 1: that's in me. So you never take anything for granted.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You you know, what's what what you all you can
- 8:21Speaker 1: go by is what you have today anymore is not
- 8:25Speaker 1: guaranteed and you can't depend on yesterday. Yeah, we're talking
- 8:27Speaker 1: to Russell Hornsby on his new series is coming out
- 8:30Speaker 1: in January on NBC. UM, let's talk about that character
- 8:33Speaker 1: because that you're playing in this When I was drawing
- 8:37Speaker 1: that's on NBC. Now we just talked about the series
- 8:40Speaker 1: that need ESPN. You were playing a running back, running back,
- 8:43Speaker 1: very athletic, very athletic. Now you're playing a character there's
- 8:47Speaker 1: a quadriplegic, and you know that's a you know, I
- 8:53Speaker 1: would try to wrap my head around how you how
- 8:58Speaker 1: you know because all your whole life been a physical life.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Walk us through the steps of preparation for a role
- 9:04Speaker 1: where it was about you know, your mind, your expressions
- 9:09Speaker 1: are really only going to be in your face, you know,
- 9:12Speaker 1: the delivery, the nuances of the tone. That had to
- 9:16Speaker 1: be a journey for you. Correct it really did. It
- 9:21Speaker 1: really was a journey, Rashan, and but one that I
- 9:24Speaker 1: was so willing to take, believe ready for quite honestly,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know, I'm an actor who I embraced the challenge
- 9:33Speaker 1: at sing in every level. Uh, you know, I was
- 9:36Speaker 1: a little nervous. You know, before taking it on, before
- 9:39Speaker 1: we began shooting, I had to be honest about that.
- 9:43Speaker 1: But I knew that I could do it. I knew
- 9:44Speaker 1: I was prepared because I knew that the Lord would
- 9:48Speaker 1: not put me in what they say, uh, they wun't.
- 9:51Speaker 1: He would drop me off here, what I mean. And
- 9:55Speaker 1: and so I knew that that that I was ready.
- 9:57Speaker 1: But for me, what had prepared me most quite honestly
- 10:03Speaker 1: for this role with my ability and my time in
- 10:07Speaker 1: school of working on Shakespeare, and also my time in
- 10:11Speaker 1: doing the plays of August Wilson, Because what we're when
- 10:14Speaker 1: we're when we're talking about see what well, I feel
- 10:18Speaker 1: that what Shakespeare does with the language is able to
- 10:21Speaker 1: bend the language. Right, you're talking about this high language
- 10:24Speaker 1: where all you're doing is using your words, my liege,
- 10:28Speaker 1: I did deny no prisoners. But I remember when the
- 10:30Speaker 1: fight was done, when I was dry with range and
- 10:33Speaker 1: extreme toil. Right. So so that's that's Shakespeare, right. But
- 10:36Speaker 1: then you have the beautiful expression of August Wilson. Right,
- 10:43Speaker 1: so you you marry the Bard and the Blues together.
- 10:47Speaker 1: So August says, I don't know about you and Leroy,
- 10:49Speaker 1: but Pernell made me kill him called me Champ. I
- 10:52Speaker 1: told him my name is King. He said, yeah, Champ.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I go on, I don't say nothing. You don't know.
- 10:58Speaker 1: My daddy killed the man for calling about his name.
- 11:01Speaker 1: He don't know. He messed with King heaving the second.
- 11:03Speaker 1: So that's with them now, hear what I mean? We
- 11:06Speaker 1: married the Bard and the Blues of August Wilson together.
- 11:12Speaker 1: Playmakers was in two thousand three. Come on that sixteen years.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I have seen you on TV consistently and the movies consistently.
- 11:21Speaker 1: So when you walk on that set, remember this, Russell.
- 11:26Speaker 1: All the energy is being produced by you, and it
- 11:29Speaker 1: just permeates to the rest of the cast because they
- 11:32Speaker 1: have to step up to your resume. They have to
- 11:34Speaker 1: step up to your work ethic. And I think it's
- 11:36Speaker 1: beautiful because on this particular series you can't even move.
- 11:41Speaker 1: That's right, that's right, that's right. You know, nothing happened
- 11:45Speaker 1: by accidents. Um, A wise man and dear friend of mine,
- 11:50Speaker 1: Stephen Henderson, used to tell me things don't just happen.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Things happen to Jess And it happened by virtue of
- 11:58Speaker 1: the work that you put in your willingness to do
- 12:01Speaker 1: the work. But I have to honestly, we brought, We
- 12:04Speaker 1: brought his re raised his name earlier. I have to
- 12:07Speaker 1: give a lot of kudos to Denzel Washington, and the
- 12:10Speaker 1: reason being is that I had the opportunity to do
- 12:13Speaker 1: in to do to being part of the revival offenses
- 12:17Speaker 1: on Broadway, and and then to be able to come
- 12:21Speaker 1: back six years later and do the film, to be
- 12:24Speaker 1: hand kicked by him the have a game to do
- 12:26Speaker 1: this film and give me a chance to share the
- 12:30Speaker 1: stage and the screen with one of I think the
- 12:33Speaker 1: greatest actors got for breath in honestly, and it said
- 12:38Speaker 1: to me, it instilled me with confidence, that said, you
- 12:43Speaker 1: are here, so don't retreat back, you forward. And it
- 12:49Speaker 1: was the who he said. He says, no, no, no,
- 12:51Speaker 1: You're supposed to be here because I because I remember
- 12:54Speaker 1: asking him. I said no. I remember saying to him
- 12:58Speaker 1: when we're the first day of shoot against him a
- 12:59Speaker 1: d thank you, thank you for what I said, you know,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, because for having to be here, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 1: forgetting me the opportunity. Brother, I didn't give you nothing
- 13:08Speaker 1: and you earned it. There you go, that's what I'm saying.
- 13:10Speaker 1: That's what I'm supposed to be here. That from that
- 13:15Speaker 1: that just told me everything I needed to know and
- 13:17Speaker 1: everything I needed to hear. Well, Russell, he just validated
- 13:20Speaker 1: Roshan McDonald. That's all I was saying about your brother.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That's all I was saying about YO, your your career.
- 13:26Speaker 1: It validates anytime you're walking to say now you're humble.
- 13:28Speaker 1: This makes you say thank you. What we all should do.
- 13:32Speaker 1: We should all not assume that that happened because who
- 13:35Speaker 1: I am, because people can look the other way. But no,
- 13:39Speaker 1: my man, you're special. He's starting on my he's starting
- 13:42Speaker 1: on Money Making Conversation right now, but he's gonna be
- 13:44Speaker 1: starting on NBC Lincoln Ryan Hump for The Bone Collector,

- 13:50Speaker 1: Eastern and Pacific seven pm Central on NBC. My man, Russell,
- 13:54Speaker 1: thank you for coming on my show. I hope you
- 13:57Speaker 1: understand that, brother, I'm a fan, but also do my
- 14:00Speaker 1: homework because I know what you do and what you deliver. Brother,

- 17:09Speaker 1: Pamela Samuel's young thank you, thank you for having me.
- 17:15Speaker 1: You gotta let you know. I'll tell you some At
- 17:17Speaker 1: the intro, I had to, you know something. What I
- 17:19Speaker 1: will not do, Pamela on my show is short chance,
- 17:22Speaker 1: short change people of what they've done, because that journey
- 17:26Speaker 1: did charge you know, l A. You know education, tell
- 17:32Speaker 1: us about that journey, you know, because here's I it
- 17:34Speaker 1: took me seven years to give one degree. Okay you
- 17:38Speaker 1: know what? And I don't you know. I grew up
- 17:40Speaker 1: in Compton and my product of the competent school system
- 17:43Speaker 1: and I always saw education as my way. Um, why
- 17:48Speaker 1: is that what you do? Because because the people that
- 17:50Speaker 1: just talked me into saying education is your out, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 1: because I um, I I've read earlier on my mother
- 17:59Speaker 1: put books in my hand in first grade, the Book
- 18:01Speaker 1: of the Month club, you can get a book every month.
- 18:03Speaker 1: And I saw different worlds. I saw a world that
- 18:06Speaker 1: was different from mine. And to be honest with you,
- 18:09Speaker 1: as a young team, I saw my mother. Women in
- 18:12Speaker 1: my mother's lives. I saw how um not having their
- 18:15Speaker 1: own independence changed their lives. You know, one one one
- 18:19Speaker 1: of one of my aunt tustmans became an alcoholic. Another one,
- 18:22Speaker 1: let's just tell it all molested, what a lested a
- 18:25Speaker 1: family member and then she's on her own and she
- 18:27Speaker 1: ends up in the projects. I mean, I just saw
- 18:28Speaker 1: all these women. Well, I had a stable life, family life,
- 18:32Speaker 1: My parents have been married for fifty five years. I
- 18:35Speaker 1: had a stable life. I saw these other women's lives
- 18:39Speaker 1: to be destroyed. I saw I had a I had
- 18:41Speaker 1: my mother. One of my mother's cousins was a victim
- 18:42Speaker 1: of travel abuse. And I said, okay, you know what,
- 18:46Speaker 1: I gotta be able to be able to have my
- 18:47Speaker 1: own So I knew as an early child that education
- 18:52Speaker 1: was a way for me to do that. And that's
- 18:54Speaker 1: and I was I was off to the races. Wow,
- 18:57Speaker 1: you know, because when I went So what did you
- 19:00Speaker 1: made you choose the schools that you went for your education? Because,
- 19:03Speaker 1: like I said, your product of Compton was it trying
- 19:06Speaker 1: to get out of the environment, just to see a
- 19:07Speaker 1: different parts of the world, just to be exposed. What
- 19:10Speaker 1: led you and also what led you to law? Um?
- 19:14Speaker 1: Okay I um. I had a chance as at a
- 19:17Speaker 1: Tempton High School or to spend a summer at USC.
- 19:20Speaker 1: I think as a tenth or eleven grade, Oh my god,
- 19:23Speaker 1: I was like, my what a world in the UFC
- 19:26Speaker 1: was only thirty minutes from my house in Compton. But
- 19:28Speaker 1: I said that's where I wanted to go, and so
- 19:30Speaker 1: I was able to go back, and I set my
- 19:32Speaker 1: sights on USC. I don't think I applied to but
- 19:34Speaker 1: a couple of other schools and I got into USC
- 19:37Speaker 1: and that was that world. Um. And you know, I
- 19:40Speaker 1: didn't go to law school till I was thirty. I
- 19:42Speaker 1: finished UM, I said undergraduate and I pursued UH journalism
- 19:46Speaker 1: and I worked in TV for a while. But I
- 19:48Speaker 1: had always wanted to go to UM law school. But
- 19:52Speaker 1: I didn't know any lawyers. I didn't see any lawyers.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And it took me, uh, seven years after after graduating,
- 19:58Speaker 1: eight years to say, U um, I can do this
- 20:01Speaker 1: because I didn't have a confidence then. You know, there
- 20:03Speaker 1: were no lawyers in my family, so I don't think
- 20:05Speaker 1: I ain't even talked to a lawyer before making that decision.
- 20:08Speaker 1: But one day and I had a real bad day
- 20:10Speaker 1: in the newsroom. The K didn't come up. A producer
- 20:12Speaker 1: yelled at me, and something and something just said pick
- 20:14Speaker 1: up the phone. We're gonna do this. And we go
- 20:16Speaker 1: back in the days when I was a news writer.
- 20:18Speaker 1: News writer were still using the type writers and think
- 20:22Speaker 1: of the phone called it called what do I need
- 20:24Speaker 1: to go to law school? Take? You gotta take the
- 20:25Speaker 1: laws demission tests. I went to Barnes and Noble about
- 20:27Speaker 1: a study guide. I had three weeks before that last
- 20:29Speaker 1: test at the end of the year to study for it.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Study study, study, study, and got in got decent enough
- 20:34Speaker 1: score to get into UC Berkeley. So you know, and
- 20:37Speaker 1: and I had wanted to go all those years, but
- 20:40Speaker 1: nothing moved me until just getting the day. It's like,
- 20:42Speaker 1: I don't you know what I need to do this?
- 20:44Speaker 1: And I was an older lawsuit most of my most
- 20:46Speaker 1: of classmates for twenty five and under when I was
- 20:48Speaker 1: in law school, and it was it was actually a
- 20:50Speaker 1: great thing that I was thirty because I was more
- 20:52Speaker 1: serious about it. I took it. You know, it was
- 20:54Speaker 1: just and it wasn't And even when I get interviewed
- 20:56Speaker 1: for jobs, because what you didn't mention I spent my
- 20:58Speaker 1: last twenty five years working is the in house council
- 21:00Speaker 1: for Toyota and what um what? Then going to LU
- 21:06Speaker 1: schools older student was a great thing because I think
- 21:08Speaker 1: it was a lot more mature, right right, right right.
- 21:12Speaker 1: You know. The thing about it is that being a
- 21:15Speaker 1: leader that made the age can often times to make
- 21:17Speaker 1: you the leader, the natural leader. And because people are
- 21:20Speaker 1: looking at you saying you have experiences that allow you
- 21:24Speaker 1: to look different, walk different, talk different. And so when
- 21:27Speaker 1: I went out, I'm going through your bario they say
- 21:29Speaker 1: you're you're a frequent speaker on these topics, which are
- 21:32Speaker 1: really extreme topics that need to be talked about, child
- 21:36Speaker 1: sex trafficking, bullying, online safety, fiction, writing, self empowerment, and
- 21:43Speaker 1: pursuing your passion. Let's break this down a little bit.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Why are you speaking on child sex trafficking? You know
- 21:53Speaker 1: the book that want to end up apt In Image Award.
- 21:56Speaker 1: The idea for that came out of a conversation with
- 21:58Speaker 1: the guy back in out No. Two thousands, ten or
- 22:00Speaker 1: eleven who said kids were being trafficked in the US
- 22:02Speaker 1: and when nobody was talking about child, that's ex trafficking man,
- 22:06Speaker 1: And like, what are you talking about? No, no no, no,
- 22:07Speaker 1: that's in Mexico, that's the Philippines as Russia. And he said,
- 22:11Speaker 1: none of no, the games, the games of trafficking girls.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And so I went home and began to research it
- 22:16Speaker 1: and I was like, it blew me away, and it
- 22:18Speaker 1: was happening in our communities and nobody was talking about it,
- 22:21Speaker 1: and that formed the idea for anybody's daughter. Just like
- 22:24Speaker 1: um Christmas Day last year, friends to me an article
- 22:28Speaker 1: about two nine year old girls who had hanged themselves,
- 22:31Speaker 1: and I'm like, what nine years old? How? What? How
- 22:35Speaker 1: does the nine year old know how to hang themselves?
- 22:37Speaker 1: And I ended up researching that and learning at the
- 22:40Speaker 1: suicide rate for African American kids. I'm near the age
- 22:43Speaker 1: of twelve, it's twice that of like kids, what what? What?
- 22:46Speaker 1: Why could that be? And that brought me to right
- 22:49Speaker 1: story to protect I mean, while I like I like
- 22:51Speaker 1: legal thrillers. Um, but I also like to teach something
- 22:55Speaker 1: in my book. So UM, I try to give you
- 22:57Speaker 1: a good mystery, a good legal story at the same
- 23:00Speaker 1: time teach you something. And I think I've done that.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And before I get too for us, say I want to.
- 23:05Speaker 1: I don't think you remember we have a we have
- 23:07Speaker 1: a personal connection, you and I because two of my
- 23:10Speaker 1: closest friends are Say Henderson and Taraph Come on that
- 23:14Speaker 1: in some family. You really need to stop talking about
- 23:17Speaker 1: my sisters like that in public now. And you don't
- 23:21Speaker 1: remember back in two thousand three were you and I
- 23:25Speaker 1: were sitting in a Felicia Henderson's backyard at a party.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Had to be two thus three or four there was
- 23:30Speaker 1: in Pasadena, in Pasadena. In Pasadena, I had just gotten
- 23:34Speaker 1: my first book deal, and I was not happy. I
- 23:37Speaker 1: was not happy with the amount of money and I
- 23:40Speaker 1: had and you and I was thinking about turning it down.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And you said, you said the following to me. You said,
- 23:46Speaker 1: you said, if you only got one book to write,
- 23:48Speaker 1: get your foot in the door and take that. You know,
- 23:51Speaker 1: if you've only got one book to write, turn down
- 23:53Speaker 1: that deal and go back and shop it and get
- 23:55Speaker 1: the best of you can't say if you got twenty
- 23:57Speaker 1: thirty books in you take that deal, get your foot
- 23:59Speaker 1: in the door, and you can you can make more money.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Later you said, you said, did anybody else offer your
- 24:03Speaker 1: books there? And I was like, no, said you need
- 24:05Speaker 1: to get your foot in that door. And what I
- 24:11Speaker 1: can't do. Man, ninety sixteen years later, you and I
- 24:14Speaker 1: are talking about money making conversations because if I have
- 24:17Speaker 1: turned down that deal, who who knew when my next
- 24:19Speaker 1: deal would have come? Well, you know this is first
- 24:23Speaker 1: of all, I love your energy. We was talking to
- 24:25Speaker 1: you know, my producers in the room when they listened
- 24:27Speaker 1: to the show as well. We love your energy. First
- 24:29Speaker 1: of all, You're just a natural passion that is crazy good.
- 24:33Speaker 1: But you know I remember that because Felicia, that's my
- 24:36Speaker 1: I call him my baby sister, uh taught me how
- 24:39Speaker 1: to write titcom. You know. Then you have you have
- 24:43Speaker 1: Saraphiny Johnson, who I think saved my career. You know,
- 24:46Speaker 1: she brought me on to the Parkers as a consultant
- 24:51Speaker 1: at the time where I didn't know where I was,
- 24:52Speaker 1: and that right and I was right when I right
- 24:54Speaker 1: before when I started managing Steve Harvey and basically the
- 24:57Speaker 1: rest is history. How how impacted television and radio, social
- 25:02Speaker 1: media with him a young adult version of failure to
- 25:05Speaker 1: protect goals on sale this month? Now, will you send
- 25:08Speaker 1: me a link of banners so I can put on
- 25:09Speaker 1: my social media? I will absolutely do that. And what
- 25:12Speaker 1: I'm doing is, I'm doing my own version of cyber Monday's.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Like I have Paddler Bell in there. I got a
- 25:18Speaker 1: girl Loney Love and there, I got Tina Live for
- 25:20Speaker 1: she has a great book that I have in there,
- 25:22Speaker 1: and and uh so I'm doing my best. I got
- 25:25Speaker 1: a ninety seven thousand fan club members, that's just that.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Then I got over eight hundred thousand fan club Facebook members,
- 25:32Speaker 1: so I got that. I got the Instagram, I got
- 25:34Speaker 1: the Twitter. So I'm just letting you know, Pamela, we
- 25:37Speaker 1: met in the backyard. In that backyard many years ago.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Felicia Henderson, still my girl, Sarah Finished, still my little sister.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And I'm telling you right now, I'm so proud of
- 25:48Speaker 1: what you accomplishing. My job right now is to continue
- 25:51Speaker 1: you down that path of success. So whatever you give
- 25:53Speaker 1: me and asked me to do for you, I honestly
- 25:56Speaker 1: will tell you right now I will do it for you. Okay,
- 25:58Speaker 1: thank you so much. I'm off excited that the audiobook
- 26:01Speaker 1: goes on selfs month. I'm I'm I'm still a couple
- 26:04Speaker 1: of weeks away from the young adult. But the audiobook
- 26:07Speaker 1: goes on sale in ten days. Young actor Larry Hearn
- 26:10Speaker 1: is my narrator. Okay, cool, get the link to me

- 26:19Speaker 1: I have one going out. I'm with you. She's on

- 29:26Speaker 1: made me sound amazing. Well, y'all, y'all you know, first
- 29:30Speaker 1: of all, I can tell you this. I always tell
- 29:31Speaker 1: people because I'm in the process of writing the book
- 29:33Speaker 1: prints and not tell people that you know you understand
- 29:37Speaker 1: your your vision and your passion in your early twenties,
- 29:41Speaker 1: and because I always tell people stop in your fifties
- 29:44Speaker 1: stop acting like you care reach your dreams if you
- 29:46Speaker 1: really if you're not happy with your life, go back
- 29:48Speaker 1: to in your early twenties when you had that past
- 29:50Speaker 1: your eighteen, when you before people told you that wasn't
- 29:53Speaker 1: a good path to go under, before you got married,
- 29:55Speaker 1: before you move somewhere, before you have some some casualty
- 29:58Speaker 1: or catastrophe in your life deviated you from your dream.
- 30:01Speaker 1: Guess what you and your wife Dana or in that
- 30:04Speaker 1: age group that I'm talking about all the time that
- 30:07Speaker 1: understands the passion, the direction and you're living in right now.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So you are awesome, my friend. You are. I appreciate you,
- 30:15Speaker 1: appreciate you, So tell me about that when I mentioned that.
- 30:19Speaker 1: A little little history here. Last time I ran into
- 30:21Speaker 1: you was at the HBCU week where ESPN Stephen A. Smith,
- 30:25Speaker 1: Magic Johnson, the madatro Vincent was down there and we
- 30:28Speaker 1: were showing everybody about the experience of HBCU. There was
- 30:32Speaker 1: no sporting event, and afterwards we had a college fair
- 30:35Speaker 1: where you can get own the spot registration and at
- 30:38Speaker 1: that college fair, over students were registered and accepted on
- 30:42Speaker 1: the spot and they were over nearly four million dollars
- 30:45Speaker 1: in scholarships that were distributed to the students. Uh, probably
- 30:49Speaker 1: about a little bit of the five hundred got those scholarships.
- 30:52Speaker 1: And Dana was there not only promoting that the event
- 30:55Speaker 1: was happening, but she was speaking at the event. And
- 30:57Speaker 1: that's how we connected. And I said, hey, you said riche,
- 31:00Speaker 1: are you gonna put them on the show? As a man?
- 31:01Speaker 1: Come on that? Come come on now now since that
- 31:06Speaker 1: it happens, what's been happening since I last saw you.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Let's get a little catch up and now you're on
- 31:10Speaker 1: the show now and what's gonna happen in absolutely so,
- 31:14Speaker 1: first and foremost, I appreciate you for having me on
- 31:16Speaker 1: the show. Um, it was awesome meeting you and being
- 31:20Speaker 1: at that event. So much poultry that was in the room.
- 31:23Speaker 1: And basically since then, from September until now, we've been
- 31:27Speaker 1: so locked in going into tax season. I think the
- 31:30Speaker 1: last time that I met you, we've had over a
- 31:32Speaker 1: three hundred plus license jumping Jack tax partners around the country,
- 31:37Speaker 1: and now between September and December we have doubled from
- 31:40Speaker 1: three hundred and six hundred licensed partners around the country. UM,
- 31:43Speaker 1: so it's been it's been totally amazing. The energy has
- 31:48Speaker 1: been ridiculous. We were literally shaping the way that people
- 31:53Speaker 1: are now looking at the tax industry. And I love
- 31:56Speaker 1: it because we're one of the only companies that has
- 31:58Speaker 1: ever done it where just through culture and just through
- 32:01Speaker 1: being ourselves, we're now making it fun for the everyday
- 32:05Speaker 1: person that is in our communities, that younger individual to say, Hey,
- 32:09Speaker 1: I'm taking taxes serious. I want to learn about taxes
- 32:11Speaker 1: because of the biggest thing is if I got to
- 32:15Speaker 1: literally pay taxes for the rest of my life, why
- 32:18Speaker 1: not learn how to do it? And it's not something
- 32:21Speaker 1: that we're taught at schools. And that's where Jumping Jack
- 32:23Speaker 1: Taxes now filling that void to not just provide that
- 32:27Speaker 1: everyday person in our community with the opportunity be able
- 32:30Speaker 1: to start a tax business, right, but now offer that
- 32:33Speaker 1: same everyday person the education by connecting them with the
- 32:36Speaker 1: tax professional and a billion dollar industry. Because people don't
- 32:40Speaker 1: know that this this this thing makes billions of dollars
- 32:42Speaker 1: here and uh, I don't like to you know, I
- 32:44Speaker 1: don't like to name drop a lot of big companies,
- 32:46Speaker 1: but you know the corporate tax companies that are out there,
- 32:49Speaker 1: but they make billions of dollars inside of our communities
- 32:52Speaker 1: year over year over year over year. From January through April,
- 32:56Speaker 1: they closed the gate and then they leave you. You You
- 32:58Speaker 1: don't see them again until December to the five right December,
- 33:01Speaker 1: right after Christmas, and they open back up. But how
- 33:04Speaker 1: many of them are actually pouring back into the community
- 33:07Speaker 1: from the billions of dollars that they take? How many
- 33:09Speaker 1: of them are actually educating the customer based on why this? Why?
- 33:13Speaker 1: Why do you? Why are you even getting a tax
- 33:15Speaker 1: return to begin with, and how are you strategically using
- 33:18Speaker 1: that money to make investments so you can be financially free.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And that's where Jumping Jack tax is coming in, because
- 33:23Speaker 1: we're shifting that in this entire industry up. Well, what
- 33:25Speaker 1: you're doing is that, first of all, can you can
- 33:28Speaker 1: you explain us the business the business model of Jumping
- 33:30Speaker 1: Jack Taxes before I start asking questions? Absolutely so, Jumping
- 33:34Speaker 1: Jack Tax is a licensing company. A lot of us
- 33:37Speaker 1: will look at us as a franchise, and for those
- 33:39Speaker 1: that are listening, there's a big difference between licensing and franchise.
- 33:42Speaker 1: To me, a franchise is pretty much you're glorified employee.
- 33:46Speaker 1: They provide you with the business plan and for example
- 33:49Speaker 1: of semi Donalds McDonald's provides you with that business plan.
- 33:52Speaker 1: As the franchise, you've probably got to have a million
- 33:54Speaker 1: dollars in liquid assets to even buy into the franchise,
- 33:57Speaker 1: and when you do, and have to be done exactly
- 34:00Speaker 1: the way that they say. The milkshake machine gotta be
- 34:02Speaker 1: the same way the fries machine gotta be over there.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Everything gotta be done that way in order gonna shut
- 34:06Speaker 1: you down. Now, was licensing, which is one of the
- 34:10Speaker 1: biggest billion dollar industries in the world. UH. Just to
- 34:13Speaker 1: talk about licensing a little bit, Walt Disney is the
- 34:16Speaker 1: biggest licenser in the world. They be over fifty billion
- 34:18Speaker 1: and licensing a year where literally you licensed out your
- 34:21Speaker 1: name to uh to somebody, they pay for the licensing
- 34:24Speaker 1: and they're able to use your name to make money
- 34:26Speaker 1: because you've built up a big enough brand. We went
- 34:29Speaker 1: into the licensing industry with Jumping Jack Tax to where
- 34:32Speaker 1: now people, the everyday person can use the Jumping Jack
- 34:35Speaker 1: Tax brand that we've built up all over the internet,
- 34:37Speaker 1: all over the country with national branding to now be
- 34:40Speaker 1: able to add that to their tax business. And now
- 34:42Speaker 1: they're able to get customers through that. So we pretty
- 34:45Speaker 1: much enroll you an online tax prep school, give you
- 34:48Speaker 1: to all the knowledge and education that you need on
- 34:50Speaker 1: basic tax law. We show you how to market your
- 34:52Speaker 1: tax business. And we've built our own mobile application where
- 34:55Speaker 1: we've created an ecosystem and a customer base to where
- 34:59Speaker 1: we're literally sending all of our text all of our
- 35:01Speaker 1: tax licensed partners leads that are in their area. So
- 35:05Speaker 1: when somebody downloads the app, is going to pull their
- 35:07Speaker 1: zip code and it's going to connect them with the
- 35:09Speaker 1: closest jumping jack tax professional in their area. So we
- 35:12Speaker 1: built up every single person that's a license of our
- 35:15Speaker 1: company with the ability to be a tax professional. Many
- 35:17Speaker 1: of them have not even come in with that experience.
- 35:19Speaker 1: That's amazing because right now you give them credibility. That's
- 35:22Speaker 1: what you are, your credibility brand and allows people to
- 35:26Speaker 1: go onto this app and say I'm in Houston, Texas.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Go to Houston, Texas and you'll see people that have
- 35:31Speaker 1: who've subscribed and a license to your brand. And how
- 35:34Speaker 1: do you vet them, Prince? How do you vet them?
- 35:38Speaker 1: The the people who are coming over to us to
- 35:41Speaker 1: start their tax business. Yes, I'll tell you a crazy story.
- 35:45Speaker 1: A lot of people don't believe this is when we
- 35:48Speaker 1: had first started licensing about a year ago, I literally
- 35:53Speaker 1: spoke to every single person on the phone, but over
- 35:57Speaker 1: six hundred plus partners. I literally sold all too, about
- 36:00Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty to three hundred before we even
- 36:03Speaker 1: started adding um others sells people onto the team. So
- 36:08Speaker 1: I would it was. It would be days where I'm
- 36:10Speaker 1: literally on the phone from seven a m. In the
- 36:12Speaker 1: morning all the way u until ten o'clock PM, about
- 36:14Speaker 1: to close my eyes and sleep because I'm selling every
- 36:17Speaker 1: single person individually. I based my sales process, not yourself
- 36:20Speaker 1: the income, but off of money. Your thought process is
- 36:23Speaker 1: very clean, and you approach this from a business perspective,
- 36:27Speaker 1: and also you understand that the opportunities to go beyond
- 36:30Speaker 1: just making a dollar, but turning that dollar around to
- 36:33Speaker 1: to recycle it within the community. Now that photo, that
- 36:36Speaker 1: that video that I was talking about this on the
- 36:37Speaker 1: cover of the website, a lot of young people were
- 36:41Speaker 1: and that that is that is your brand being built
- 36:44Speaker 1: through the through the through the younger community. And that
- 36:47Speaker 1: is the craziest part about it is And and I'm
- 36:50Speaker 1: still surprised and not understanding to this day how sixty
- 36:54Speaker 1: five per cent of our company would jumping jack tags
- 36:58Speaker 1: are our individuals under the age of twenty eight years old.
- 37:04Speaker 1: This is a lot of young people on this phote
- 37:06Speaker 1: out here, look like tell you and and and people
- 37:11Speaker 1: ask me, you don what is the secret? How did
- 37:13Speaker 1: you get younger folks to want to believe in a
- 37:15Speaker 1: tax business and not even understanding is because they weren't
- 37:19Speaker 1: believing in the tax business in the age of social media.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Right now, they're believing in a person. We live in
- 37:26Speaker 1: the age of influencer marketing right now. Well we've never
- 37:29Speaker 1: stopped living in the age of influencer marketing. You take
- 37:31Speaker 1: a look look at the insurance industry. Everybody knows flow,
- 37:35Speaker 1: Progressive the lover. That's the reason why Progressives has increased
- 37:38Speaker 1: by billion dollars when they added flow to their commercials.
- 37:41Speaker 1: The same thing here. You have to be the influencer
- 37:44Speaker 1: of your brand and when people believe in that, they're
- 37:46Speaker 1: going to follow whatever it is you do. But it
- 37:49Speaker 1: comes with the level of responsibility. So so many younger people,
- 37:52Speaker 1: a lot of them are coming out of college. And
- 37:54Speaker 1: of course you may you know this as well, that
- 37:57Speaker 1: college that is number one in the country, that's right
- 38:00Speaker 1: now forty is projected that by two thousand twenty three
- 38:05Speaker 1: of all college kids that graduated with college that are
- 38:08Speaker 1: going to be in default right if we're at over
- 38:11Speaker 1: a billion dollars in debt, which means that we have
- 38:14Speaker 1: a huge issue in our country as right now. And
- 38:16Speaker 1: my sister, prime example, graduated from school, she still can't
- 38:19Speaker 1: get a job and her degree as of now, so
- 38:22Speaker 1: that those are real facts. The kids need a game
- 38:27Speaker 1: plan and unfortunately their parents don't have it because they
- 38:30Speaker 1: don't know and they grew up in at different time
- 38:33Speaker 1: where the end that was not around. So a lot
- 38:36Speaker 1: of these kids they just needed a plan and jump
- 38:38Speaker 1: in Jack Tech them starting the finished and and then
- 38:41Speaker 1: it's something for them to believe in and something tangible
- 38:43Speaker 1: where they said, hey, I can start making money right now.
- 38:46Speaker 1: I love it. It's your version of amer Kay, your
- 38:49Speaker 1: version of Avon, your version of Amoy Williams insurers back
- 38:53Speaker 1: when I was growing up. It's amazing. Let's talk about
- 38:55Speaker 1: how we can reach out to you through social media,
- 38:58Speaker 1: through your website, because my man, you're on a roll.
- 39:01Speaker 1: And then also I'm a distribute this on my social
- 39:03Speaker 1: media sites as well. Tell us down absolutely, so first
- 39:07Speaker 1: and foremost, you can definitely download the jumping Jack Tax
- 39:09Speaker 1: apps because you'll be able to find whatevery uh black
- 39:13Speaker 1: tax professional or minority tax professional in your area. We're
- 39:17Speaker 1: all over the country. You can go to the jumping
- 39:19Speaker 1: Jack Tax website as well if you're interested in wanting
- 39:21Speaker 1: to start your own tax business and not myself from
- 39:24Speaker 1: Prince down now. You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, everywhere,
- 39:29Speaker 1: across everywhere, across platforms, but definitely makes you download the
- 39:33Speaker 1: apps to find somebody, because I want to be a
- 39:35Speaker 1: resource to you, not just somebody that you follow. My man,
- 39:38Speaker 1: I appreciate you coming on my show. I appreciate you
- 39:40Speaker 1: being you, and uh, first of all, the show when
- 39:44Speaker 1: it airs, and we're gonna post it all over my
- 39:45Speaker 1: social media platform. I got a fan club base of
- 39:48Speaker 1: a hundred thousand. I definitely want to put some banners
- 39:50Speaker 1: in there and do a special story on you, do
- 39:52Speaker 1: a video on you, because what you what you're doing alone,
- 39:55Speaker 1: especially what you guys do together's superstar and needs to
- 39:59Speaker 1: be talked about, documented and written out and screams to
- 40:02Speaker 1: the high heavens because you know, I've seen this format
- 40:04Speaker 1: done on the Black Black Doctor Dot Org. A lot
- 40:07Speaker 1: of platforms try to drive you to to uh, you know,
- 40:11Speaker 1: minority site or minority business, minority eat reads and things
- 40:15Speaker 1: like that. The fact that I looked at that photo,
- 40:17Speaker 1: that video that's on the on the cover page of
- 40:20Speaker 1: your website and I see all these young people. That
- 40:22Speaker 1: means you have customers that are gonna be around for
- 40:24Speaker 1: twenty and thirty years. Your brand will only get bigger
- 40:28Speaker 1: and only only and uh, you know, we're gonna talk.
- 40:32Speaker 1: I might have to give me a franchise and just
- 40:33Speaker 1: just to hang out with you. Okay, Hey, thank you
- 40:37Speaker 1: for coming on the show. Prints Hey and a k
- 40:39Speaker 1: a dog and we're gonna wrap in the future. Okay,
- 40:44Speaker 1: appreciate till Dana high from me. About Hi. This is

- 41:31Speaker 1: things to help take care of her. A lot of times.
- 41:35Speaker 1: The baby and the family is like that. Money Making
- 41:38Speaker 1: Conversations continues online at www dot money Making Conversations dot

- 41:50Speaker 1: Hi this Rashan mcgowain. Welcome to money Making Conversations Studio Studio.
- 41:56Speaker 1: It's always fun. I'm your host, of course, each money
- 41:59Speaker 1: Making comes Asian radio talk show, says podcasts about entrepreneurship
- 42:03Speaker 1: and entertainment. I provide the consumer and business owner access
- 42:06Speaker 1: to celebrity CEOs, entrepreneurs and industry decision makers because everybody
- 42:10Speaker 1: travels a different path to success. That is because your
- 42:13Speaker 1: brain is different. So stop reading other people's success stories
- 42:16Speaker 1: and writing your own. I guess on money Making Conversation
- 42:19Speaker 1: deliver information about their career motivation, how they live a
- 42:22Speaker 1: balanced life, which is especially I want to get into
- 42:25Speaker 1: my guests who is sitting across from me and I
- 42:28Speaker 1: guess we kind of like bonded recently because we became
- 42:30Speaker 1: members of the same Council, National Council. We're talking about
- 42:33Speaker 1: that in the interview and how they leave the balanced
- 42:35Speaker 1: life and we'll listen to their secrets to success at
- 42:39Speaker 1: Weddington Waitington Realty. Correct, My next guest employs a diverse
- 42:44Speaker 1: staff of professionals, many of whom are multi lingual, which
- 42:48Speaker 1: is an assets when dealing with international clients, which lets
- 42:50Speaker 1: you know she's worldwide. You know she's not some domestic.
- 42:53Speaker 1: She is also licensed realtor, licensed realtor in three stags, Georgia, Florida,
- 42:58Speaker 1: in Texas because you live in Houston as well, right, Correct,
- 43:01Speaker 1: I'm actually a real estate broker. Broke. That's what I
- 43:04Speaker 1: only show was just educated show because because I want
- 43:07Speaker 1: to know I bought enough homes, I'm gonna what's the
- 43:09Speaker 1: real estate broker? We get all that, you know, because
- 43:12Speaker 1: I learned from my guests as well, So you know
- 43:14Speaker 1: that I know a lot and I will tell people
- 43:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna do it at all, but then I also
- 43:18Speaker 1: ask questions about what I don't know. So the only
- 43:19Speaker 1: difference is is that a real estate broker can own
- 43:23Speaker 1: a brokerage and higher agents. Every agent has to have
- 43:26Speaker 1: a broker Okay, Okay, cool. Okay, she's just even said
- 43:31Speaker 1: her name yet, you know she's you know, that's what
- 43:34Speaker 1: That's why I don't have studio guests right now right
- 43:37Speaker 1: that the last two year guest of the year right here, right.
- 43:43Speaker 1: She also follows me of social media because she knows
- 43:46Speaker 1: I'm a baker and she loves the baker as well.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Please work with the money making conversations, Silvia Weddington, Thank you.
- 43:52Speaker 1: How you doing well? Good here? Look fashionably, got your
- 43:56Speaker 1: black ole, got your hair floor and that that's the
- 43:58Speaker 1: look you You know, I always telling people people say
- 44:01Speaker 1: you look nice to this. I know where the mirror is.
- 44:03Speaker 1: That it's there's a purpose in my house. And so
- 44:07Speaker 1: that's what I tell people. They compliment me, and I
- 44:09Speaker 1: take that compliment in a very you know, a humble manner,
- 44:13Speaker 1: because you know, people don't have to say nice things
- 44:15Speaker 1: about you. That's right, thank you. And so when I
- 44:17Speaker 1: look at your company, was talking about a broker and
- 44:19Speaker 1: a realtor, because you're all all these shows on TV,
- 44:22Speaker 1: you know, you know, fix this, flip this. Are are
- 44:26Speaker 1: you one of those people? I'm not one of those people.
- 44:30Speaker 1: You're not flipping inping and you're not going in by
- 44:33Speaker 1: the house for a hundred thousand and then tear thousand
- 44:36Speaker 1: walls and no, but I help people do that, Okay,
- 44:39Speaker 1: we help people do that. So we definitely particularly in
- 44:43Speaker 1: the area in the around the Mercedes Bend Stadium, that's
- 44:47Speaker 1: a hot area for people to go in and fix
- 44:50Speaker 1: something and flip it and try to flip in. So
- 44:52Speaker 1: so what that means that the we're watching enough television
- 44:55Speaker 1: means you buy the home at this rate and do
- 44:57Speaker 1: do they do fix it up? Right? They do fix
- 45:00Speaker 1: that in the purpose of fixing it up under a
- 45:01Speaker 1: certain fee so they can sell it for some type
- 45:04Speaker 1: of profit exactly, and that you'll do it, but you
- 45:07Speaker 1: know clients. I know clients. I have clients that do that.
- 45:10Speaker 1: So I'll take them out to preview the property and
- 45:13Speaker 1: they will decide whether or not they want to purchase
- 45:15Speaker 1: that property, and they know what the budget is of
- 45:17Speaker 1: what they want are wanting to add into that property,
- 45:20Speaker 1: and then they purchase the property and go in and
- 45:24Speaker 1: fix it and they either most of the time they
- 45:27Speaker 1: lease it out or sometimes they sell it. Now here's
- 45:31Speaker 1: isn't it? You said Florida? You said Georgia and Texas? Correct?
- 45:35Speaker 1: Why three locations for your company, Well, um, we are
- 45:39Speaker 1: a global company. And the three locations because because I
- 45:42Speaker 1: lived in Texas, that's where I started, and we moved
- 45:45Speaker 1: around a bit. So I started, I moved to Atlanta,
- 45:50Speaker 1: and you know, so I needed to have a license
- 45:53Speaker 1: here as well, so I kept Texas and then and
- 45:57Speaker 1: then it's also a place where a lot of people
- 46:00Speaker 1: who are athletes get traded to. So it's easier for
- 46:04Speaker 1: me to be licensed in those states. Plus I know
- 46:06Speaker 1: the layer of the land right now. I know Texas
- 46:09Speaker 1: is a is a no tax state. Georgia is a
- 46:12Speaker 1: tax state. Florida is a no tax state. Correct. Correct. However,
- 46:16Speaker 1: in Texas, the property taxes extremely um inflated, so you
- 46:23Speaker 1: may not have other taxes, but that property will get
- 46:26Speaker 1: you and that does not go away. And that's the
- 46:28Speaker 1: thing we let people know that the property tax, you know,
- 46:30Speaker 1: everything else, even the mortgage will go away, but the
- 46:32Speaker 1: property tax does not. Okay, So, so so talk about
- 46:36Speaker 1: walkers through your business because you have different layers. So
- 46:39Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do a disservice in act like you
- 46:40Speaker 1: do just one thing, because you have a concierge part
- 46:43Speaker 1: of your business as well. So we're talking about realty
- 46:48Speaker 1: being a realtor or broker. You're broker, right, Okay, cool?
- 46:52Speaker 1: So talk about how do you do your conduct your
- 46:54Speaker 1: business in three different states. Well, um, I have a
- 46:58Speaker 1: lot of frequent flyer moms. Um, so I probably can't
- 47:03Speaker 1: be too uh. But one of one of the ways
- 47:06Speaker 1: that we do our business is that we, um we
- 47:10Speaker 1: are have a concert or service that if you were
- 47:12Speaker 1: buying a house, uh, anywhere in the world, we would
- 47:15Speaker 1: go and preview that house for you and and narrow
- 47:18Speaker 1: down to three to five properties and when you are
- 47:21Speaker 1: ready to maybe go to where it is, it could
- 47:25Speaker 1: be in Russia, it could be here in the United States. Uh,
- 47:28Speaker 1: we would meet you there. Russia. Yeah, in Russia. Yeah,
- 47:32Speaker 1: I have clients in Russia. They mainly buy a lot
- 47:35Speaker 1: in Miami. So but yeah, you can come to Russia.
- 47:38Speaker 1: We could go to China, we could go anywhere in
- 47:40Speaker 1: the world. And um we are we have a global
- 47:44Speaker 1: Russian trip. Yeah. I don't have a lot of those
- 47:49Speaker 1: because I have two teenagers, so that that that cuts
- 47:51Speaker 1: down a lot of That's how we made on just
- 47:55Speaker 1: a little back stories that we went to orientation together
- 47:58Speaker 1: the National Minorities Supply Development Council or m b E
- 48:02Speaker 1: and I know why I will. I'm trying to Uh.
- 48:06Speaker 1: First of all, I wanted my company, which is third
- 48:08Speaker 1: fifteen Media. You can go to media dot com and
- 48:11Speaker 1: you can see I do talent management that I have,
- 48:14Speaker 1: I do live Advance, I do marketing and branding. So
- 48:18Speaker 1: I'm trying to find out in Cree relationships within the
- 48:21Speaker 1: industry nationally and especially in Georgia, telling people what I
- 48:25Speaker 1: do and and so what what what what? What was
- 48:29Speaker 1: your purpose of joining the council? My purpose was to
- 48:33Speaker 1: be able to meet people like you, um and people
- 48:36Speaker 1: who were serious about their business because, as you know,
- 48:38Speaker 1: it takes They don't just let you walk in the door.
- 48:42Speaker 1: It's a long drawn out process and you know, in
- 48:45Speaker 1: a strong vetting process. So when you know when you
- 48:48Speaker 1: walk into a room with the people who actually took
- 48:52Speaker 1: the time to invest in getting that certification that they're
- 48:57Speaker 1: serious about their business, and you know, just to be
- 49:00Speaker 1: able to work and network with other business owners like myself,
- 49:04Speaker 1: well you know, that's that's really what this is all about.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Because I was a number of our organizations usually part
- 49:09Speaker 1: of is a member of the World e r C,
- 49:12Speaker 1: which the Employee Relocation Council, and then you're also a
- 49:16Speaker 1: member of the Global Mobilities your Global Mobility Specialists. So
- 49:22Speaker 1: when I'm going through your bio, I'm seeing that you
- 49:25Speaker 1: understand being connected and being and being in these relationships
- 49:29Speaker 1: and create an environment. Because quite frankly, that's why you're
- 49:32Speaker 1: on this show right now, because we went to the
- 49:34Speaker 1: same council. Otherwise you wouldn't be on this show. So
- 49:37Speaker 1: this is extending your brand outside of what you would
- 49:40Speaker 1: normally do comfortably. Yes, absolutely, absolutely, and then that's what
- 49:46Speaker 1: this is all about. This may lead to something else,
- 49:48Speaker 1: it may not, but it's still brand development, brand exposure,
- 49:53Speaker 1: and that's what it's all about with your brand. How
- 49:55Speaker 1: long have you been in this type of business. I've
- 49:57Speaker 1: been in this business for twenty years. And it takes
- 49:59Speaker 1: a long time to build a real estate business, particularly
- 50:02Speaker 1: because in real estate people see you as competition, and
- 50:06Speaker 1: so there's not a lot of people who will kind
- 50:08Speaker 1: of reach out across the aisles to help you, and
- 50:12Speaker 1: you kind of have to. You say, you don't listen
- 50:14Speaker 1: to other people's stories because it's not yours, and that's
- 50:17Speaker 1: very true. However, you know, sometimes you don't see a
- 50:21Speaker 1: lot of that in real estate because they just don't
- 50:24Speaker 1: do it, you know, they like um, you know, like no,
- 50:27Speaker 1: you know this is that to you out there? How
- 50:30Speaker 1: do you get your hustle on? I've knowing that you
- 50:32Speaker 1: have no mentors? Yeah, well actually I do. Okay. One
- 50:38Speaker 1: of my mentors is one who I've absolutely never met,
- 50:41Speaker 1: ness Tyler Perry. I read a lot. I read all
- 50:43Speaker 1: of his things and you know how he was successful,
- 50:46Speaker 1: and it's certainly different because we're two different things. But
- 50:49Speaker 1: you know what I like most is that he says,
- 50:51Speaker 1: you know, whatever you're gonna do, just step out and
- 50:54Speaker 1: and and do it. You know, if you're gonna start,
- 50:56Speaker 1: you know, walking or exercising, if you go out for
- 50:59Speaker 1: five minutes, it's a start and come back. So and
- 51:01Speaker 1: I've actually done that because you know, yes, and now
- 51:06Speaker 1: I'm up to ten miles. Yeah, so I started out small. Uh.
- 51:11Speaker 1: My other mentor is Orlando Lynch at Atlanta Peach Movers,
- 51:15Speaker 1: and he's always available to answer questions and help me
- 51:19Speaker 1: out and text me back when I have a problem,
- 51:21Speaker 1: whether it be with staff or the running up the business.
- 51:25Speaker 1: And and it's kind of related to what we do
- 51:28Speaker 1: because you know, he's moving people and and and that's
- 51:31Speaker 1: what we're doing. We're moving people as well, and so
- 51:34Speaker 1: that's really interesting. So so basically by I guess that's
- 51:38Speaker 1: what I'm doing, and I know that's what I'm doing
- 51:40Speaker 1: money making conversation because that's why I started this show
- 51:43Speaker 1: to just have your story. Your story is compelling, its
- 51:46Speaker 1: stories relatable, and people need to hear your story. And
- 51:49Speaker 1: so as as we as we write down this information
- 51:52Speaker 1: that you're giving us, what is your biggest takeaway? Give
- 51:56Speaker 1: a gift of information to individuals who who are listening
- 51:59Speaker 1: to you right now because you because you survived that
- 52:01Speaker 1: little a little dip, Yes, I did that. The President
- 52:07Speaker 1: Obama had to pull us out of So being licensed
- 52:11Speaker 1: in three states was it wasn't a great thing as
- 52:14Speaker 1: well because in Texas we didn't uh the market didn't
- 52:18Speaker 1: take such a nose dit as it did here. Uh
- 52:21Speaker 1: it did in Miami. In Florida. Yeah, Georgia and Florida
- 52:25Speaker 1: took a hard hit because the real estate market. Uh there,
- 52:32Speaker 1: I imagine that there's there's more people that moved into
- 52:36Speaker 1: the Georgia area and and they were not that they
- 52:40Speaker 1: owned more property and they had a lot less um
- 52:45Speaker 1: equity in the in the in the in the properties
