- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. In Acts Chapter 14, we see Paul
- 0:46and Barnabas continuing on the missionary journey we saw them
- 0:48commissioned for in Acts Chapter 13.
- 0:51In this chapter we see them at Iconium Lyconia.
- 0:53Lystra, Derby. Pasidia, Pamphylia, Perga,
- 0:57Atelia, and eventually back to Antioch.
- 1:00In all these cities, the gospel is met with quite a variety of
- 1:03responses. In Iconium, some of the Jewish
- 1:06and Gentile leaders attempt to stone Paul and Barnabas because
- 1:09of their message and the signs that accompany it.
- 1:12In Lystra, though, the people were so captivated by a miracle
- 1:15of healing God performs through Paul that they think Paul and
- 1:18Barnabas to be gods, saying the gods have become like men and
- 1:21have come down to us. The passage goes on to say that
- 1:23they began calling Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes because he was
- 1:27the chief speaker among these. Though in all the cities that
- 1:30Paul and Barnabas visit, we also see men and women coming to
- 1:33faith in Christ, believing the gospel, and joining together to
- 1:37form a church. Here's where I want us to spend
- 1:39our time. In all of these travels and all
- 1:41of these peoples that Paul and Barnabas visit.
- 1:44In all of these various responses, one thing is
- 1:46consistent the mission of Paul and Barnabas.
- 1:50In every city, Paul and Barnabas have one objective.
- 1:52Listen to how verses 6 and seven puts it.
- 1:55After Paul and Barnabas have fled Iconium following their
- 1:57attempted stoning, it says they became aware of it and fled to
- 2:01the cities of Lyconia, Lystra, and Derby and the surrounding
- 2:04region. And there they continue to
- 2:06preach the gospel. They continue to preach the
- 2:09gospel. That's why they've been sent.
- 2:11That is their mission. Their methods may look very
- 2:14different. That gospel proclamation may
- 2:16have a different tone depending on if you're being stoned or
- 2:19being called a God. The audience certainly looks
- 2:21different. The responses to their message
- 2:23vary. But their message does not
- 2:25change. Their mission does not change.
- 2:28They go from city to city to proclaim that Jesus Christ, the
- 2:31Son of God, lived a perfect life and died on the cross so that
- 2:35sinful man might have relationship with perfect God.
- 2:38And that Jesus rose from the dead to guarantee our victory
- 2:41over sin and death and is seated at the right hand of God,
- 2:44interceding for all those who put their faith in Him.
- 2:47And friends, that message is the very one that we, 2000 years
- 2:51later, have staked our lives on. That message is the very one
- 2:55that we've been entrusted by Jesus to proclaim to the world
- 2:57around us. It will not always be easy.
- 3:00In this very chapter Paul says through many tribulations we
- 3:04must enter the Kingdom of God. But regardless of the response,
- 3:07regardless of the audience, we must take up Paul and Barnabas
- 3:11mission to proclaim this great news to the world.
- 3:14So go out in obedience like Paul and Barnabas did, obedience to
- 3:18the Great Commission of our Lord to go and make disciples of all
- 3:21the nations. You will face hardship, you will
- 3:24face tribulation, but you will experience the great joy of
- 3:28walking in the will of God as He grows His Kingdom on this earth.
