- 1:50Speaker 1: important to understand that everybody's travels a different path to success.
- 1:54Speaker 1: That's because your brand is different. The challenges you're facing
- 1:57Speaker 1: your life are different. So stop reading other people's success
- 2:00Speaker 1: stories or clips or or anything. Go to the movie
- 2:04Speaker 1: said I want to be him, because that's their story.
- 2:06Speaker 1: That's the path that they were. You cannot replicate how
- 2:09Speaker 1: they got there, so you have to start writing your
- 2:11Speaker 1: own stories. It's really important when I say that, now
- 2:14Speaker 1: you can be motivated by their success because their stories
- 2:18Speaker 1: can offer you direction and help you reach your goals
- 2:21Speaker 1: through their efforts. You can just go like, that's how
- 2:23Speaker 1: they did it. Maybe I can do it that way,
- 2:25Speaker 1: but remember they did it their way, So you have
- 2:28Speaker 1: to have your own planning and your own committed effort.
- 2:31Speaker 1: My guests on money making conversations have that same passion
- 2:34Speaker 1: and they share that information when we talk about their career,
- 2:38Speaker 1: their motivation, what they're planning, how they've overcome the odds,
- 2:42Speaker 1: and how they live a palance life, which leads to
- 2:46Speaker 1: sharing with us the secrets to their success. My next
- 2:49Speaker 1: guest is a product of Hallom, New York. I like
- 2:52Speaker 1: saying that a product of Hollom. Put the infusis on Halem,
- 2:57Speaker 1: New York. Here's a media personality, author, astro numerologists, lecturer,
- 3:02Speaker 1: professor and has studied numerology and astrology for many years.
- 3:07Speaker 1: He's brought the subject to light by way of his books, lectures,
- 3:10Speaker 1: and appearances on both natural television and radio shows. Such
- 3:14Speaker 1: as Oprah Winfrey television show. He's on the show today
- 3:18Speaker 1: to discuss his revised and updated edition of numbers, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: you a numerology guy for everyday living. Please welcome to
- 3:25Speaker 1: money making conversations. Lord, straight home. But Sean, thank you
- 3:29Speaker 1: so much, and started about that little mix up with
- 3:32Speaker 1: the look he is about to go retro rad I
- 3:34Speaker 1: don't know whatever you're familiar with this phenomenon, but it's
- 3:37Speaker 1: a mercury Us, the planet of communications, and when it
- 3:42Speaker 1: goes retrograde or simply out of sync, out of alignment
- 3:45Speaker 1: or slowed down, so there's everything else communications. I thought
- 3:49Speaker 1: you said to know you said three. Uh So, it's
- 3:53Speaker 1: a lot of things that goes on. So we're in
- 3:55Speaker 1: the shadow of it now and in fact, it becomes
- 3:57Speaker 1: full effect on w A sixteen next Sunday. Absolutely, I'm
- 4:02Speaker 1: born in the month of February. My birthday is February seven.
- 4:06Speaker 1: My birthday is on Sunday, just twelve days later, on
- 4:09Speaker 1: the twenty eight Pisces. But you know, it's really if
- 4:16Speaker 1: I was going to be a Pisces, what my mother said,
- 4:18Speaker 1: she couldn't hold off. Don't worry, don't worry. You got
- 4:21Speaker 1: a good pieces of the phone. I'm rocking the brother,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I'm rocking it. So, you know, it's really interesting because
- 4:26Speaker 1: we go through life when we see, uh, you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: the astrology section. Isn't everybody every newspaper and uh you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: and that and I'm as successful as I claimed to be,
- 4:37Speaker 1: and I'm educated as I claimed to be. I still
- 4:40Speaker 1: would look of pisces, see what it says? Wow, Why
- 4:45Speaker 1: are we Why are we drawing to that information? Why
- 4:48Speaker 1: are we drawing to astrology? Even though we say we
- 4:53Speaker 1: don't believe it doesn't matter what it says, but we're
- 4:55Speaker 1: drawing to it. Why is it? Lord? Because we're always
- 4:59Speaker 1: curious about ourselves in our future, what's around the corner,
- 5:03Speaker 1: what's the next move, what's the next step, especially Rashan,
- 5:06Speaker 1: when we're in moments of doubts or decision making or
- 5:09Speaker 1: at that crossroads, as they say. And so it's no
- 5:12Speaker 1: accident that since the beginning of time, famous men and
- 5:16Speaker 1: women from Napoleon bona farte Us astrologers are JP. Morgan
- 5:20Speaker 1: in fact used astrologers. In fact, in his day in
- 5:23Speaker 1: the early Bank, he honed his fish ion when the
- 5:26Speaker 1: media approached him about the fact that he used astrology
- 5:30Speaker 1: and is it too it makes millionaires? He says, no,
- 5:33Speaker 1: it makes billionaires. And what a lot of people don't
- 5:36Speaker 1: know the son is that Actually Evangeline Adams, the astrology
- 5:41Speaker 1: of her day, actually taught JP Morgan astrology and in
- 5:47Speaker 1: fact he hired an astrologer or his staff, and so
- 5:51Speaker 1: did Charles Swab. So if you know this to this day,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you have JP Morgan Bank and Charles Swab Investment Company.
- 6:00Speaker 1: The way back in the early nineteen hundreds, they both
- 6:02Speaker 1: had one thing in common. They both employed they both
- 6:06Speaker 1: had an astrologist on their staff. Wow, So tell me
- 6:10Speaker 1: this what exactly is an astrologist. Astrologer is one who
- 6:16Speaker 1: makes a study of the zodiac sign and that is
- 6:20Speaker 1: determined by the nature of the planets. Teach planets who's
- 6:23Speaker 1: a sign, each sign, who's a characteristic and these signs
- 6:26Speaker 1: are broken into four elements of Earth, air, fire, and water.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And so this would explain things. So for example, when
- 6:35Speaker 1: I take your birthday February twenty eight, war sign, but
- 6:40Speaker 1: you also a fire number, which means you bring to
- 6:43Speaker 1: secure by intuitions, feelings, hunches about things, yet passing determination
- 6:48Speaker 1: and conviction to get into death. That's right, romantic, add
- 6:53Speaker 1: all the good stuff to that. Lord romantics, you know, poet,
- 6:56Speaker 1: you know, a natural leader. All I said, because what
- 7:04Speaker 1: happens is numerology is like the kissing cousin to astrology,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and the group between the two are the planets that
- 7:12Speaker 1: rove them. So if a person says mentioned the planet
- 7:15Speaker 1: of the sun, I know they're talking about a leo,
- 7:19Speaker 1: or numerically they're talking about the number one person on
- 7:22Speaker 1: the first, the tenth y of any month. And so
- 7:28Speaker 1: that's that's the combination. So I guess merged the best
- 7:31Speaker 1: of the scientists. But you know you said something earlier
- 7:34Speaker 1: it sounded like me in my evolving I started reading
- 7:38Speaker 1: about great men and women and things like that, what
- 7:41Speaker 1: made them who they are. Everybody does go at their
- 7:44Speaker 1: own lay to speed, their own lay to time and
- 7:46Speaker 1: according to their own set of numbers. Would you do
- 7:49Speaker 1: and I do, and everybody else for that matter. Absolutely.
- 7:52Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting. When I in high school, Um,
- 7:57Speaker 1: I studied numerology and I study their palmistry. And I
- 8:02Speaker 1: was so and um driven by that that it was
- 8:05Speaker 1: it was my national science project, you know, and and
- 8:10Speaker 1: it was and it was it was. And so when
- 8:13Speaker 1: I submitted it, and I, you know, I wanted my
- 8:16Speaker 1: high school, and then I was at the state level,
- 8:18Speaker 1: and in all the all the judges will come by,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and of course you know, I knew what I was
- 8:22Speaker 1: talking about, a new numbers, I knew how to do
- 8:24Speaker 1: numerology and a new palmistry. And they will walk away
- 8:27Speaker 1: at all that I could pull this type of information
- 8:30Speaker 1: from the lines in their hands, the type of fingers
- 8:33Speaker 1: that they had, and the patterns that are consistent tied
- 8:36Speaker 1: to their personality and so. But when you have that ability,
- 8:39Speaker 1: it really does help you understand people who you're talking
- 8:43Speaker 1: to their personalities and also can give them good advice.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Is that a part of your life as well? Giving
- 8:49Speaker 1: advice to people you may or may not know. Well,
- 8:53Speaker 1: here let me get people just a quick business tips.
- 8:56Speaker 1: If you're talking to a very important person in front
- 8:59Speaker 1: of you, pay a ten canto. The length of their fingers.
- 9:02Speaker 1: The longer the fingers, the more details they expect from you.
- 9:06Speaker 1: The shorter the fingers, the less details they expect from you.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So for a person sitting across from you has very
- 9:13Speaker 1: short fingers and they say to you, Lloyd, is it
- 9:16Speaker 1: this is yes or no question? Answer it in a
- 9:19Speaker 1: yes or no fashion. Don't say well, you know, missr
- 9:21Speaker 1: McDonald one day back in the day, they don't want
- 9:25Speaker 1: to hear, or that is it yes or is it no?
- 9:28Speaker 1: And so these things, these are observations and visible observations
- 9:32Speaker 1: to help gut a person intelligently about the person in
- 9:35Speaker 1: front of them. So napposent once says, the face may
- 9:39Speaker 1: deceive the hand. Never so woman can all the most
- 9:43Speaker 1: beautiful makeup on the planet. If he opens those palms
- 9:46Speaker 1: of her hands and they got ugly lines of it,
- 9:48Speaker 1: lines it or all out of sink. I don't care.
- 9:51Speaker 1: She look okay for shining truth. You know, like I said,
- 9:57Speaker 1: you know if your fingers are long and slender, you
- 10:00Speaker 1: know you have music or music background. You know, are driven.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I remember that I'm telling you something. I was into it,
- 10:07Speaker 1: and you know in life, you know, you know, I'm
- 10:10Speaker 1: eighteen years old. I always tell people that your destiny
- 10:13Speaker 1: is tied to what you to Your often tied to
- 10:15Speaker 1: your youth, because that's when you were a thinker, were
- 10:18Speaker 1: a dreamer, were a person who wanted to advance your
- 10:20Speaker 1: opportunities beyond wanted to work a normal job. And I
- 10:24Speaker 1: always remember that that that I think, I feel I
- 10:27Speaker 1: still use those qualities because they were just natural to me.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Because people always say you you can make a decision
- 10:33Speaker 1: about a person so quick with shard as soon as
- 10:35Speaker 1: you meet them, because I can, because I feel that
- 10:38Speaker 1: what I learned as a and and studying numerology, what
- 10:41Speaker 1: I learned and studying UH Palmer Street, it really helped
- 10:44Speaker 1: me have confidence in myself and communicating when you're talking
- 10:48Speaker 1: to strangers, are talking to people that you know correct, sure,
- 10:52Speaker 1: now you're a hundred percent right, and and that many
- 10:56Speaker 1: of my clients the common thing they'll say to me, man,
- 10:58Speaker 1: I wish I had known this at all time ago,
- 11:01Speaker 1: how to align their seasons, how to be in the
- 11:03Speaker 1: right place at the right time, because if you can
- 11:05Speaker 1: be in the wrong place at the wrong time, why
- 11:07Speaker 1: can't you be in the right place at the right time.
- 11:09Speaker 1: And that's what took me years to figure out. So
- 11:13Speaker 1: when I talk with clients, I can tell them that
- 11:15Speaker 1: that is at the states, that that's months, that that's ages,
- 11:18Speaker 1: that that years, and a host of other things. That's
- 11:22Speaker 1: absolutely fascinating. It as wrong as I've been doing, as
- 11:24Speaker 1: I am still amazed to this day. Are you amazed
- 11:28Speaker 1: at the reaction that people give you the yes, yes, yes,
- 11:34Speaker 1: And I have a way of putting a Q and
- 11:36Speaker 1: A on things. For example, in numerology, what what into
- 11:40Speaker 1: Here's what got me into the numerology world. Numerology, like astrology,
- 11:44Speaker 1: deals with your birthday. That numerology is the only metaphysical
- 11:48Speaker 1: brands to deal with your name. So people are hearing
- 11:51Speaker 1: on the money making conversations, you're right, So they'll be
- 11:54Speaker 1: talking about their signs for minutes and then the next
- 11:57Speaker 1: you know, yeah, Lloyd, your sons, you're so in So
- 12:00Speaker 1: ve back to the name. In the horology. The name
- 12:02Speaker 1: denot natural talents, your gifts, your skills, your abilities, the
- 12:09Speaker 1: kinds of people though are likely to be drawn to you,
- 12:12Speaker 1: the occupational leanings that will take place, for example, and
- 12:16Speaker 1: a host of other goodies. So, giving example, I took
- 12:19Speaker 1: the relity of your person name of Sean okay, because
- 12:21Speaker 1: the first name is the active name. As I tell people,
- 12:23Speaker 1: it's like I started job today. We give our person
- 12:26Speaker 1: last name, but by projects like hey were sign Hey Lloyd.
- 12:29Speaker 1: So when I did the name of sign on the
- 12:31Speaker 1: Caldon system, their name adds up to a twenty nine
- 12:35Speaker 1: and two plus nis two Now what's amazing is this
- 12:39Speaker 1: to rules of mechanical mathematical scientists, computers, technology, engineering, things
- 12:45Speaker 1: of that nature. To also rules look food in the
- 12:48Speaker 1: streets too, because if you look at how the two
- 12:50Speaker 1: is shaped when you write it, it's almost shaped like
- 12:53Speaker 1: the intestines of the stomach. And so therefore people who
- 12:56Speaker 1: have two in their name or that those they are
- 12:59Speaker 1: normally sending kip out their eating habits, dietary laws and
- 13:02Speaker 1: make tadlers, chefs, restaurant tours. Listen, I can't wait to
- 13:07Speaker 1: get ahold of some easy squeezy lemon, easy whatever you
- 13:11Speaker 1: call they. It looks like about two of them under
- 13:14Speaker 1: that guy, two or three of those, Okay. It also
- 13:17Speaker 1: tells me that there was a height and average probability.
- 13:20Speaker 1: What if your parents could have been that? Then a
- 13:21Speaker 1: parents can Syrian which is late June July or hurists
- 13:26Speaker 1: late May through June, or born on the second to
- 13:29Speaker 1: seventh day level sixteen twenties, the twenty five or the
- 13:33Speaker 1: twenty ninth of any month, and you get it a
- 13:35Speaker 1: lot better with the females than you do the male.
- 13:39Speaker 1: And so talk at audience probably be two. Well, you know, yes,
- 13:43Speaker 1: my target target artists is our female. But of course
- 13:47Speaker 1: you know, because I studied numerology in high school, I
- 13:50Speaker 1: knew that about my name. And but you know, but
- 13:53Speaker 1: as you go through life, you tend to forget that
- 13:55Speaker 1: you know, and and so this is really you know,
- 13:58Speaker 1: I'm a executive ducer. I have other producer Sam. They
- 14:02Speaker 1: look at me because they're saying things that you're saying.
- 14:05Speaker 1: They know it's about me. I'm very tech savvy, I
- 14:08Speaker 1: love food, I'm a foodie, I'm a baker. So all
- 14:11Speaker 1: those things and you've never met me. And so this
- 14:13Speaker 1: is information you gather and through through the process. And
- 14:16Speaker 1: so some people can say, oh, that's sweeping generalization. So
- 14:19Speaker 1: it can it can match up anywhere. But if you
- 14:22Speaker 1: do your work correctly, you can really grind grind down, uh,
- 14:27Speaker 1: making more granular so it really fits you and make
- 14:30Speaker 1: it and may make you realize this is a life
- 14:32Speaker 1: that you can leave. If you're confused about what you
- 14:35Speaker 1: want to do in life, that's what numerology can help
- 14:37Speaker 1: you correct. It opens up a lot of things. Let
- 14:41Speaker 1: me answer this. Where you're going in Houston, Texas? Absolutely okay,
- 14:46Speaker 1: Because see what people don't is each city and country
- 14:49Speaker 1: and nations have their own americal frequencies. Even example, you're
- 14:54Speaker 1: born only it's the twenty okay, So so I stand corrected,
- 15:04Speaker 1: that's the nine. So your numbers will be the nine
- 15:06Speaker 1: to six and the three. But what happens is one
- 15:10Speaker 1: of the numbers that are strongly, strongly attracted to the
- 15:13Speaker 1: nine is the one. For example, one represents the alpha,
- 15:18Speaker 1: nine represents the omega at the beginning in the end.
- 15:22Speaker 1: So I noticed that the city you lived in where
- 15:25Speaker 1: you were born in Houston, that's what that city adds
- 15:28Speaker 1: up to the number one. Then I know that you
- 15:31Speaker 1: lived on first Stomy became the meal during your commedy
- 15:34Speaker 1: head of comedy things. I think it's coming on eighty
- 15:37Speaker 1: six ste when you came back to New York again
- 15:40Speaker 1: on close that living on thirty nine streets, and then
- 15:43Speaker 1: in nine that's when you moved two l A all right,
- 15:49Speaker 1: And then you know you said you got your first
- 15:52Speaker 1: uh tafing experience from cecils on a hundred eight street
- 15:56Speaker 1: in Harlem. That New York City is a number one.
- 16:00Speaker 1: Lanta where you resided is the number one. Even your
- 16:02Speaker 1: office one hundred as to the number one. But if
- 16:07Speaker 1: you were born on the twenty seven that means your
- 16:09Speaker 1: key numbers are the nine, the three, and the six
- 16:13Speaker 1: in that order. So people say it was that mean,
- 16:15Speaker 1: and they take us about going through a lot of replaces.
- 16:17Speaker 1: You know these numbers. Once I agree in it, it
- 16:20Speaker 1: tells me what your best days are. Your best days
- 16:23Speaker 1: are always on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Why be cause
- 16:26Speaker 1: nine rules Tuesday, three rules Thursday and six rules Friday.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So all the days you've got to make decisions or
- 16:34Speaker 1: with my business clients and I do their calendars and
- 16:37Speaker 1: do this space upon their numbers because certain days are
- 16:40Speaker 1: better than others. And so with that, I know that
- 16:44Speaker 1: you're blessed with six months during the year, which is March, April,
- 16:46Speaker 1: in May, October, November and December. So if you look
- 16:50Speaker 1: at when you may have gotten your car, or signed
- 16:53Speaker 1: these contracts, or got Steve Harvey off the ground, because
- 16:57Speaker 1: I know I think I started back in this his
- 17:01Speaker 1: business manager was killed in an accident unfortunately. Um. But
- 17:06Speaker 1: what it does is also shows your consistency to and
- 17:09Speaker 1: nine people two plus seven is nine have very good
- 17:13Speaker 1: of themselves. They do not take order stuffy. They like
- 17:17Speaker 1: the massive thistate and the I'm gonna go to the
- 17:22Speaker 1: next break. But I'm gonna come back and share some
- 17:25Speaker 1: of the thoughts that you just talked to me, because
- 17:27Speaker 1: it's really important that people hear what I try to
- 17:30Speaker 1: say on this show about it and bringing laud on
- 17:32Speaker 1: it really is taking me back on the journey. Let
- 17:35Speaker 1: me know that I'm now living the path that I
- 17:37Speaker 1: said when I graduate from high school. That's all we've
- 17:40Speaker 1: been back with my man. He's a astro numerologists expert.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Let's put the word expert in front of his name.
- 17:47Speaker 1: Large straight horn. We'll be right back with more from
- 17:50Speaker 1: Martha McDonald and money Making Conversations don't touch that down.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations continues online at www dot money Making
- 17:58Speaker 1: Conversations dot com and follow money Making Conversations on Facebook, Twitter,
- 18:03Speaker 1: and Instagram. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time you stop thinking
- 18:07Speaker 1: about your dreams and put some plans into action. Hi,
- 18:15Speaker 1: this is ra Sean McDonald and you're listening to Money
- 18:17Speaker 1: Making Conversation. The show today is to discuss my guests
- 18:21Speaker 1: revised and updated edition of Numbers and you a numerology
- 18:25Speaker 1: guy for everyday living. He's back. He's changing. He's not
- 18:29Speaker 1: so much changing my life. He just reminded me of
- 18:33Speaker 1: my course of action was always planned and now really
- 18:37Speaker 1: living it now. And that's what I preached every people
- 18:39Speaker 1: all the time, is that really, if you're confused and
- 18:42Speaker 1: you don't know what you wanted with your life, just
- 18:44Speaker 1: go back to when you was eighteen, in those early twenties,
- 18:47Speaker 1: when you had a dream and it kind of shifted.
- 18:51Speaker 1: You could have shifted because of some physical illness, because
- 18:55Speaker 1: shifted because a relationship, because marriage, a job, you could move,
- 19:00Speaker 1: all those things can cause you to shift out of
- 19:02Speaker 1: your dream. But more importantly, that dream is still inside you.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And so as I hear you talk a lord about
- 19:09Speaker 1: numbers and talk about my name, and talk about the
- 19:11Speaker 1: city and state and the city as I lived in
- 19:13Speaker 1: because I did live on eighty six, and first I
- 19:15Speaker 1: did live in New York on Thursday night, and first
- 19:18Speaker 1: I did. I have lived in Houston, I have lived
- 19:20Speaker 1: in Atlanta, I have lived in Los Angeles. All these
- 19:23Speaker 1: things are important. But and also Tuesday, Thursday and Friday,
- 19:28Speaker 1: that's those are important days to be I worked like that.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I told my staff, I gotta give my first quarter
- 19:33Speaker 1: right so I can have a successful March April and May.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I just bought my car last year, my newest car
- 19:38Speaker 1: in the month of May. Also, I told my staff
- 19:41Speaker 1: in the in twent and eighteen, I had to give
- 19:43Speaker 1: my fourth quarter right, which is I told November in December,
- 19:46Speaker 1: because I just felt I had to do that. I
- 19:48Speaker 1: just felt with inside me it was important. And then
- 19:51Speaker 1: hearing you deliver this information back to me, doing this
- 19:54Speaker 1: call is crazy good because that means that I have
- 19:58Speaker 1: to I have to continue to understand that my course
- 20:02Speaker 1: of action has already been set. I've just accepted. And
- 20:05Speaker 1: that's what a lot of people don't do. And that's
- 20:07Speaker 1: what you remind them through your practices. Correct. That is correct.
- 20:12Speaker 1: And what happens is we're so busy looking at anybody
- 20:15Speaker 1: everybody else's back yard. We need to look in our
- 20:18Speaker 1: on that yard. That's why Earl Nightingale called this thing
- 20:21Speaker 1: acres of diamond You're so busy looking over there that
- 20:24Speaker 1: probably right under your very own acres of diamonds that
- 20:27Speaker 1: you have not tapped into their Not only that people
- 20:30Speaker 1: won't know what the real diamond looks like in the
- 20:32Speaker 1: rough anyway, absolutely think is a piece of don't that
- 20:34Speaker 1: kick it out. But for those that are stute, for
- 20:37Speaker 1: those that are persistent and consistent. They know when that stone,
- 20:40Speaker 1: that davy stone is cut and polished and shaped, it's
- 20:44Speaker 1: a huge value. And that's how we do our dreams. Wow,
- 20:48Speaker 1: let's talk about how can we get in touch with you?
- 20:51Speaker 1: What is your website? Let's let's go there before we
- 20:53Speaker 1: start talking about your book, because of the fact that
- 20:56Speaker 1: it's a revised and updated edition of your book numbers
- 20:59Speaker 1: and you. Le's talk about how can we contact you
- 21:01Speaker 1: and tell us about your website. Well, my website is
- 21:04Speaker 1: Lloyd dash Strayhorn dot com. So it's l L O
- 21:10Speaker 1: Y D Lloyd Das Straighthorn sp R A Y eight
- 21:15Speaker 1: or or in dot com. I'm on Twitter on the
- 21:18Speaker 1: numbers in you, Facebook under numbers in you. Uh. Let's
- 21:22Speaker 1: set up on Instagram on the numbers in you. Uh.
- 21:25Speaker 1: This book that you're talking about, actually, I actually written
- 21:30Speaker 1: three other books. I've written a total of six books.
- 21:33Speaker 1: They can see them all when they go to Amazon
- 21:35Speaker 1: dot com. For those that would like to beat out
- 21:38Speaker 1: to me, Uh, they can call my total free number,
- 21:40Speaker 1: which is one eight hundred five eight one four four
- 21:43Speaker 1: zero one. That's one eight hundred five eight one for
- 21:48Speaker 1: for zero one. Now I'm gonna admit when I when
- 21:53Speaker 1: we start talking about you know, because you are on
- 21:55Speaker 1: our show, we had a lot of people who are
- 21:58Speaker 1: gospel artists and sometimes and jokingly, when we start talking
- 22:02Speaker 1: about astrology, start talking about you know, they'll start talking
- 22:06Speaker 1: about that's Devil's work. You know, you you're following that
- 22:09Speaker 1: you're leading people away from God. Well, when when you
- 22:12Speaker 1: hear that, because you talk about it in your book,
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know this book, I'm talking about numbers and you
- 22:17Speaker 1: a numerology guy for everyday living. When they say things
- 22:20Speaker 1: like Devil's work leading people away from God, what are
- 22:22Speaker 1: your comments on there? Well, you know what sential singory sound.
- 22:26Speaker 1: People don't know. I went to Similary School. I was
- 22:28Speaker 1: going to be administered myself, believe it or not, except
- 22:31Speaker 1: that that's through God's work in another way. And here's
- 22:34Speaker 1: what I do. I do have three we three sections
- 22:37Speaker 1: of the religious. By it, it feels what I do
- 22:40Speaker 1: is Devil's work. But this is how I explain it
- 22:42Speaker 1: to them. Religion is a belief for a sign. What
- 22:46Speaker 1: I do in astrology and numerology is a science, so
- 22:50Speaker 1: the two don't compare. In other words, in order for
- 22:53Speaker 1: me to do your charge, I have to use the
- 22:56Speaker 1: scientistical that's taking the month to day that you you're born,
- 22:59Speaker 1: the time of ocation. It doesn't go any other way.
- 23:03Speaker 1: And then I'll tell people nameing a war since Kate,
- 23:06Speaker 1: since Kate until able in the Bible. Name a war
- 23:10Speaker 1: that has been fought in the sign of Cosas it
- 23:12Speaker 1: can't name anyone. And the war the fourth name of
- 23:14Speaker 1: Good number nine. They didn't name any one, but all
- 23:17Speaker 1: throughout history and their religious wars. Now there's a partisan
- 23:21Speaker 1: the Catholics in Ireland, the Muslims in the Hindus in India. Okay,
- 23:26Speaker 1: my God is better than your God. It's a belief,
- 23:30Speaker 1: so therefore this doesn't interfere. And then when I tell
- 23:32Speaker 1: people the battle is a numerology book, they get upset
- 23:36Speaker 1: because if you go to the Old Testament, the fourth
- 23:38Speaker 1: Book of Moses is called the Book of Numbers. Now
- 23:41Speaker 1: what they're gonna say, I wrote that their garden stuff.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Moses on the second day of the second Monkey named
- 23:46Speaker 1: the armies by their name and their poles. And then
- 23:48Speaker 1: when people want to talk about the twelve tribes of
- 23:50Speaker 1: Israel or they've how to do is go through that
- 23:52Speaker 1: same chapter four uh, the Book of Numbers and further
- 23:58Speaker 1: into that chapter, God gives the numbers of all the
- 24:02Speaker 1: twelve tribes every single wall. So the bibble is ans
- 24:08Speaker 1: you cannot game up a chapter verse I'll say song
- 24:11Speaker 1: twenty three, verse two or chapter You know uma, because
- 24:19Speaker 1: I know you've had this conversation many time. Yes, And
- 24:23Speaker 1: when my mother used to take me to church on
- 24:24Speaker 1: Sunday as a boy, Okay, i'd hear them women up
- 24:28Speaker 1: there and talking about that him. Numbers look real good.
- 24:30Speaker 1: I know what that meant at the time, you know,
- 24:32Speaker 1: and they keep it in all week, so so you know,
- 24:36Speaker 1: and and imagine trying to go through a world without numbers.
- 24:39Speaker 1: Imagine uh, stephen A Smith going October the five, trying
- 24:44Speaker 1: to live in a world of athletes when numbers are
- 24:48Speaker 1: not used. How can you talk about the stats? How
- 24:51Speaker 1: can you talk about the scores? You know, you can't
- 24:53Speaker 1: do anything without umbers. You go to your dentist today,
- 24:56Speaker 1: each tooth in your mouth is as signed a number,
- 25:00Speaker 1: the two. You know, it's really interesting. I got to
- 25:05Speaker 1: because see, I I started in high school, so so
- 25:08Speaker 1: I knew. I knew numerology was the side. I knew
- 25:11Speaker 1: that Palmer was inside. I didn't think it was like
- 25:14Speaker 1: devil's work because I knew that if you applied mathematically,
- 25:18Speaker 1: eventually guess what, I got my degree in math, math
- 25:22Speaker 1: and so and so. I So this was just a
- 25:25Speaker 1: you know, the reason I'm excited what executive producer of
- 25:28Speaker 1: the show, Samantha Taylor, brought your name to me. She rihan,
- 25:32Speaker 1: would you like to get him on? I said, what
- 25:34Speaker 1: does he do? I said, oh, he has to be
- 25:37Speaker 1: on the show. And just to talk about you know,
- 25:40Speaker 1: this is the kind of like you know to me,
- 25:42Speaker 1: it's like you know, you're if you know, you're my
- 25:44Speaker 1: godfather in a sense that you know because of the
- 25:47Speaker 1: fact that you you have you have you have with
- 25:49Speaker 1: beyond my thought process. But you were in minding me, Rashaan.
- 25:53Speaker 1: You was you was headed down the right track. You
- 25:55Speaker 1: know you you you you understood how to be successful
- 25:58Speaker 1: using these philosophers. It's all about science. It's nothing offensive
- 26:02Speaker 1: about it. But eventually got your greet mad scientific and
- 26:06Speaker 1: you've all then you've lived your life based on the
- 26:08Speaker 1: principles of numerology. You've lived your life. Look at you
- 26:11Speaker 1: first first, first, first, Houston, all of it in the
- 26:14Speaker 1: months are important to you. And so I have subconsciously
- 26:18Speaker 1: taking that information buried it in my brain, but I've
- 26:21Speaker 1: lived it all my life. And then you remind me
- 26:24Speaker 1: that making at the background, what little background I could
- 26:27Speaker 1: signed on you. You seem to be very very much
- 26:29Speaker 1: in what you do. The cynic and Pisces is referred
- 26:33Speaker 1: to in astrology as one of the psychic signs that
- 26:37Speaker 1: they know. They just don't know how they know, but
- 26:39Speaker 1: it takes go by their feelings and they go by
- 26:42Speaker 1: their hunches and then lit, y'all listen, listen, I'm telling them, listen,
- 26:46Speaker 1: how you know that every shot? Why are you gonna
- 26:49Speaker 1: why are you gonna say that person? They we'll walk
- 26:51Speaker 1: away from that person. He's a fool. I said, Hey,
- 26:54Speaker 1: I just know that's a food sitting over there. I
- 26:55Speaker 1: don't know. They might dress well, but that's a lot
- 26:58Speaker 1: of craziness sitting in that chair over there. Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Let's talk about the book, my friend. You've revised, it
- 27:04Speaker 1: is updated. When you say that is revised and updated,
- 27:07Speaker 1: what exactly does that mean? Well, what it means was
- 27:10Speaker 1: that I published my first book in seven. This one
- 27:14Speaker 1: was published in seven. Now I have three other books
- 27:18Speaker 1: that was published in twenty succeeds that they can see
- 27:21Speaker 1: on Amazon. One is and I have them in different colors.
- 27:25Speaker 1: The one you and I are talking about is an
- 27:26Speaker 1: armed color. Then I have a rose color book that'st
- 27:30Speaker 1: Lloyd's Numbers in New Relationship Guide for people about relationships, marriage,
- 27:34Speaker 1: Best Time to sad me Evan, and I have another
- 27:37Speaker 1: one called Lloyd's Numbers in New work Book that's ingreening
- 27:40Speaker 1: to teach you how to do what I do, but
- 27:42Speaker 1: in a very rudimint way. And then my point when
- 27:45Speaker 1: it's my group book, which is Lloyd's Book of Numbers
- 27:47Speaker 1: of Neurology God for the twenty century. And one which
- 27:51Speaker 1: is really an extension of the book you have that
- 27:53Speaker 1: takes things to a whole another level. And as long
- 27:56Speaker 1: as I've been doing this over forty years, kind of
- 27:58Speaker 1: still road still is excited, That's what. And I'm just
- 28:03Speaker 1: as amazing if I just started yesterday. It looks interesting. Thing.
- 28:08Speaker 1: So Confusus says, when you found your passion, you never
- 28:12Speaker 1: work a day in your life, and that's right. Well,
- 28:16Speaker 1: you know, it's really fun. At first of all, it's
- 28:17Speaker 1: a fun conversation. I enjoy all my interviews on money
- 28:20Speaker 1: to make a conversation, but they here an interview that
- 28:23Speaker 1: has reminded me that I have lived my life according
- 28:26Speaker 1: to a foundation I said in high school, just I followed.
- 28:29Speaker 1: I'm still following the rule that foundation that was very key.
- 28:32Speaker 1: And so my success that I'm living right now is
- 28:35Speaker 1: going back to or accepting the responsibility of that foundation
- 28:39Speaker 1: that I had laid when I came out of high school.
- 28:41Speaker 1: And I tell people at all the time who are confused,
- 28:44Speaker 1: who are who are bored, who are dissatisfied with the
- 28:47Speaker 1: course that their life is leading them on, that you know,
- 28:50Speaker 1: just go back, just go back and look and laid
- 28:53Speaker 1: the foundation and so but you can but you can
- 28:55Speaker 1: help them now if they are confused, or you can
- 28:57Speaker 1: help them now if they don't understand and what the
- 29:00Speaker 1: future can hold. You're not predicting the future, but you
- 29:03Speaker 1: can lay the framework or how it should be correct shee.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I use this as a guide for example of those
- 29:08Speaker 1: will get up this morning and they say, okay, they
- 29:11Speaker 1: look at the weather. It's gonna rain. So it may
- 29:14Speaker 1: rain or may not, but it guide you as to Okay,
- 29:17Speaker 1: if it does rain, I need to go out with
- 29:18Speaker 1: my boots, my um groop, my rain go that's on.
- 29:21Speaker 1: It does Wow, it just acts as a guide. It
- 29:25Speaker 1: doesn't you know, Web you and I and I think, well, anyway,
- 29:30Speaker 1: I gotta hold phil lot of you the next time
- 29:31Speaker 1: I'm on First of all, you know, you know you're
- 29:35Speaker 1: coming back, and you know that when I come to
- 29:37Speaker 1: New York, we're gonna eat launch or dinner just as friends,
- 29:40Speaker 1: just as friends, because you know, I just need to.
- 29:43Speaker 1: I like surrounded myself with people who have similar drive,
- 29:47Speaker 1: similar passion. That's why I'm heading in my life now.
- 29:50Speaker 1: Lord is making sure that people around me, uh, motivate me,
- 29:55Speaker 1: but also accept the values that I have and don't
- 29:57Speaker 1: think that the way I talk is crazy or don't
- 30:00Speaker 1: think they have any negative spirit. I always walk away
- 30:02Speaker 1: from the negative spirit. And you're not a negative spirit.
- 30:04Speaker 1: You're a motivator because of the fact that I know
- 30:07Speaker 1: people have a lot of bricks that you people and
- 30:09Speaker 1: my client Tello primarily women, but men need to be
- 30:13Speaker 1: open to this ship so they can live their lives.
- 30:16Speaker 1: We'll get up, We'll get them there together, Lord, me
- 30:19Speaker 1: and you, because guess what, straight up we're gonna talk.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I'm I'm the truth, I'm a success, and I would
- 30:25Speaker 1: definitely let everybody know that you're the truth again before
- 30:28Speaker 1: we get off the off the wrap up this interview, Lord,

- 31:08Speaker 1: me say this, I tried to explain when you have

- 35:29Speaker 1: jumping into a new endeavor you know, a film and TV. Well,
- 35:32Speaker 1: you know, it's really interesting because you are a diverse
- 35:34Speaker 1: talent singer. Okay, And sometimes I remember when I was
- 35:38Speaker 1: managing Steve Harvey because it was a comedian. Some people
- 35:41Speaker 1: were envious that he was able to get sitcoms because
- 35:44Speaker 1: he was a comedian. They feel he didn't put the
- 35:46Speaker 1: work into the craft, you know, and so he just
- 35:50Speaker 1: gave it. He just got it because he's Steve. He's
- 35:52Speaker 1: a funny guy. And that's not fair, you know, if
- 35:54Speaker 1: we all put different levels of work. Because if I
- 35:58Speaker 1: mentioned the city should at Lanta, ha what you love
- 36:00Speaker 1: that food? That cold dr right on here to run
- 36:05Speaker 1: right on New York City, Yes, and the l A
- 36:08Speaker 1: just because you gotta go there, you have to go there,
- 36:10Speaker 1: So that means you putting work into your life. There's
- 36:13Speaker 1: there's there's means that there's times you would be rather
- 36:16Speaker 1: be someplace else. Yeah, but you gotta be there. You
- 36:18Speaker 1: gotta be well. I mean, you know they're there are
- 36:22Speaker 1: different paths you must take. I mean sometimes you don't
- 36:24Speaker 1: always know it right off the back. You know, I
- 36:27Speaker 1: left New Orleans, um right out of high school, went
- 36:31Speaker 1: to l a sleeping on a couch, sleeping on the floor,
- 36:34Speaker 1: you know, me and my me and my bros that
- 36:35Speaker 1: I graduated from school with, and and we just you know,
- 36:39Speaker 1: we have the mentality that Okay, this is what it's
- 36:41Speaker 1: gonna take. We need to we need to leave New Orleans.
- 36:45Speaker 1: We need to go somewhere else and and start hitting
- 36:48Speaker 1: the pavement there and sing there and get our name
- 36:50Speaker 1: out there. And and that's just really what it really is.
- 36:53Speaker 1: You know, um Uh. As an actor, you're you're you're
- 36:58Speaker 1: stationed different places, you know, and that's a beautiful thing
- 37:01Speaker 1: because you you, if you have the time, you get
- 37:04Speaker 1: an opportunity to if you can um sink your teeth
- 37:07Speaker 1: into the city that you're in and and and there
- 37:10Speaker 1: you can feel the pulse of what that city has
- 37:12Speaker 1: and and like living in New York that hustle and bustle.
- 37:16Speaker 1: I mean that that feeling, that that feeling you must
- 37:20Speaker 1: all all of it and the attitude. Now something may
- 37:23Speaker 1: take it negative, but I I tell it as a positive.
- 37:26Speaker 1: People don't have time, you know people really you have
- 37:29Speaker 1: to respect people's time and that and and and they
- 37:32Speaker 1: cherish their time, and so that's why they get going.
- 37:35Speaker 1: That's why it feels like, you know, as soon as
- 37:37Speaker 1: you wake up at nine, you know, nine am, you blink,
- 37:40Speaker 1: it's nine pm, and you know, it feels like you know,
- 37:43Speaker 1: so it's so it's it's it's interesting. You know, you
- 37:46Speaker 1: go to New York Midtown at two o'clock in the more,
- 37:48Speaker 1: it feels like a five o'clock in the regular city. Yes,
- 37:51Speaker 1: And that's the crazy part about New York City. And
- 37:53Speaker 1: I always tell people that, you know the reason I
- 37:56Speaker 1: bring up those different locations, Each one of those cities
- 37:59Speaker 1: are different. Yes, and you walk away with these of
- 38:03Speaker 1: what that is that atmosphere. I think it makes you
- 38:07Speaker 1: a much more rounded person. It does. I think so too.
- 38:09Speaker 1: I think traveling is absolutely it's imperative to any person.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I think I think we you you have to at
- 38:16Speaker 1: some point in your life you have to have. I
- 38:18Speaker 1: hope you you're able to You're blessed to have a
- 38:21Speaker 1: nomad uh period in your life where you just live
- 38:26Speaker 1: a bunch of different places. I mean, because I think
- 38:29Speaker 1: it's just really important to to to know about the world.
- 38:33Speaker 1: You know. You know, it's really funny just watching you talk.
- 38:36Speaker 1: Listen to your talk. I feel like I'm talking to
- 38:38Speaker 1: a poet, a poet, and it's really cool. And I'm
- 38:41Speaker 1: talking to Luke James, two time Grammar nominated artists, you know,
- 38:46Speaker 1: And I would tell you what I'll really tell you
- 38:48Speaker 1: why I love talking to you because see what I
- 38:51Speaker 1: left IBM to do stand up comedy. One thing I
- 38:54Speaker 1: always want to do was have multi levels of income.
- 38:57Speaker 1: And that what you see, I like, that's what you're doing.
- 39:00Speaker 1: She's really rough in this business, man, because they could
- 39:02Speaker 1: be more setbacks and games, and the setbacks are what
- 39:05Speaker 1: turned people around. They turn them around. Absolutely. We look
- 39:08Speaker 1: at this business. There's a lot of people who have gifts.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Is a lot of people have that passion. But those setbacks, man,
- 39:14Speaker 1: can stop you because because you really don't have anybody
- 39:18Speaker 1: to turn to. I always tell people, you know, you
- 39:20Speaker 1: can talk to somebody who's a secretary talked about throwing
- 39:23Speaker 1: male because they have people it's relatable to the normal person.
- 39:26Speaker 1: But you're talking, you're telling somebody the team I'm going
- 39:29Speaker 1: to l a. All they think about is all the
- 39:32Speaker 1: other stars, Denzel Samuel Hell yeah, people because they can't
- 39:36Speaker 1: think of Luke Jane. How you gonna make it? Do? Who?
- 39:40Speaker 1: You know who? Yeah, you have to really believe in yourself.
- 39:44Speaker 1: You have to. It's it's I mean, you have to
- 39:47Speaker 1: be out of your mind in a sense of a
- 39:49Speaker 1: sense of in a sense of your belief right and
- 39:53Speaker 1: your passion, your passion, and it truly has to be yours.
- 39:57Speaker 1: It can't be no one else's because I think that's
- 39:59Speaker 1: where you know people people say, well, how do you say?
- 40:02Speaker 1: Because everybody kind of, like you know, thinks they're supposed to,
- 40:04Speaker 1: but not everybody is really living their truth. I think
- 40:07Speaker 1: not everybody's walking in their particular stuff. They're seeing someone
- 40:10Speaker 1: else's influence that you as someone else's influences is making
- 40:14Speaker 1: them do something maybe that isn't completely right for them,
- 40:18Speaker 1: And there's a hole at the end of that tunnel.
- 40:21Speaker 1: There is some sort of place where they'll they'll realize
- 40:25Speaker 1: that this isn't for them, and and that's sometimes the
- 40:28Speaker 1: downfalls and that, but that's why you have to really
- 40:31Speaker 1: really find that and know for sure that this is
- 40:34Speaker 1: what you want to do, and then go for blow
- 40:36Speaker 1: right right now? You know the really cool part about
- 40:40Speaker 1: listening to you because at that age I experienced it
- 40:43Speaker 1: at my age, you know, because I left on the
- 40:45Speaker 1: role you did an eighteen and twenty six, I decided
- 40:48Speaker 1: to make a decision that I'm tired of IBM. I
- 40:51Speaker 1: looked around, you know, I got enough you know, showtime
- 40:53Speaker 1: and made me the funniest comic contextures three years in
- 40:55Speaker 1: a row. I figured that was enough going out there
- 40:58Speaker 1: and tested. I had enough credits to walk in papers,
- 41:02Speaker 1: to get out there and see if I could do this.
- 41:04Speaker 1: But even when you get out there, you still alone.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Did you did you go to l A by yourself? Well?
- 41:10Speaker 1: I went to l A with with two of my
- 41:13Speaker 1: two of my bros that I went to high school with.
- 41:15Speaker 1: We were we were in a group, a trio um
- 41:18Speaker 1: and then and then you know, somewhat some some parts
- 41:22Speaker 1: of the business weren't understood, and and and some issues,
- 41:26Speaker 1: you know, family issues, and when NOTOT came about and
- 41:28Speaker 1: then we kind of fell apart group. Um, I had
- 41:33Speaker 1: to make a decision. I had to make a decision
- 41:35Speaker 1: whether to stick around with with my my two brothers
- 41:40Speaker 1: who decided to leave l A. UM decided that they
- 41:44Speaker 1: were going to leave l A or stay in l
- 41:49Speaker 1: A and Finn for myself. And that's the key word
- 41:53Speaker 1: right there, Finn for yourself. That's that's that's the that's
- 41:55Speaker 1: the one, that's why they left. Yeah, because I'm gonna
- 41:58Speaker 1: tell you something, Man, a lot of people want to
- 42:00Speaker 1: be stars, a lot of people want to dream of
- 42:03Speaker 1: the pot at the end of the wrong bo But
- 42:05Speaker 1: it's a lot of loneliness there is, and it's a
- 42:09Speaker 1: lot of self doubt. You have to you know, if
- 42:11Speaker 1: you have faith, you have to. It's so much, man,
- 42:14Speaker 1: it's so much. There's so much, you know, I mean,
- 42:17Speaker 1: you know, let's speed up to the last five years.
- 42:21Speaker 1: I say, for me have been one of the hardest,
- 42:27Speaker 1: one of the hardest times for me. Just um, just
- 42:31Speaker 1: finding myself, finding what I love, UM, finding out my truth,
- 42:37Speaker 1: just in general and career. Is this music? Is this
- 42:41Speaker 1: what I want to do? Continue to do? Is is
- 42:42Speaker 1: this what I'm supposed to do? Um? Also, is this
- 42:46Speaker 1: all I have, you know, and and and around that
- 42:50Speaker 1: time is very really scary, and and and then also
- 42:52Speaker 1: just personal life that love and and wanting to be
- 42:56Speaker 1: in love and trying to have a life, and and
- 42:58Speaker 1: my putting every thing inside of this song in front
- 43:02Speaker 1: of me, right in front of you know, because I
- 43:04Speaker 1: am I point in my career ahead of living life
- 43:08Speaker 1: and stuff, and am I missing out on things? You know?
- 43:10Speaker 1: And and you know it was it was it was
- 43:12Speaker 1: a lot, you know, going through a not feeling like
- 43:15Speaker 1: I was being appreciated at a label, you know, trying
- 43:19Speaker 1: to I mean, getting all of these all of these opportunities,
- 43:23Speaker 1: but not not fully being able to capitalize on, yeah,
- 43:27Speaker 1: maximize them because I didn't completely have the artistic freedom
- 43:32Speaker 1: that I needed, that that I needed in order to
- 43:35Speaker 1: capitalize on so many of the things that were coming
- 43:37Speaker 1: to me, like film. So you went five years, I'm
- 43:39Speaker 1: going another five years. Okay, cool? Today, you know, I'm
- 43:43Speaker 1: I'm in my staff. You know, we do a meeting
- 43:45Speaker 1: all right and now, and I always say, find out
- 43:48Speaker 1: what guests are gonna come on the show? Interesting, come
- 43:50Speaker 1: on the show. And I got staff and Jersey and
- 43:53Speaker 1: Richmond and conference call and go I go then Luke
- 43:57Speaker 1: James name, Come on, did I hear the chocolate drop?
- 44:07Speaker 1: I don't. I don't play with I don't. I couldn't
- 44:13Speaker 1: even get pasts. You know what did he do? What
- 44:16Speaker 1: did he got out? No? No, no, no, no, chocolate job.
- 44:19Speaker 1: It's gonna be on the show. He's gonna be on
- 44:21Speaker 1: the show. So so so so that means some good
- 44:25Speaker 1: times happening out there when you carry on Monica with
- 44:28Speaker 1: the ladies chocolate yes, yes, no, truly no, I honestly,
- 44:34Speaker 1: to be fair, it never it wasn't the thought in
- 44:36Speaker 1: my mind. Men. The ladies make the choice, they decide
- 44:39Speaker 1: what it is. I just throw my hands up and say, yes,
- 44:42Speaker 1: I'll be that for you. That's how you get a soul,
- 44:44Speaker 1: That's how you get that's night at the masquerade. Yeah,
- 44:51Speaker 1: just me, I'm man, I'm truly grateful, truly grateful. This
- 44:55Speaker 1: is Jay Yeah, this is this is this is all
- 44:58Speaker 1: is born done, eighteen years old. I'm gonna follow my dream. Yeah,
- 45:02Speaker 1: I got to drop her actor, man, I mean whole
- 45:10Speaker 1: are you making me think of these things? Like? I'm
- 45:13Speaker 1: just grateful. Man. This it's a journey, man, you know,
- 45:16Speaker 1: it's a journey. What I try to do with money
- 45:17Speaker 1: making conversations. I've been blessed because I know you. I
- 45:21Speaker 1: know you from the highs and the lows, and there's
- 45:24Speaker 1: some levels you're gonna get that I've experienced, you know,
- 45:26Speaker 1: private jets, just walking in red carpets, multi too, and
- 45:31Speaker 1: things like that, because I want you to experience that,
- 45:33Speaker 1: because you're gonna pay it forward because you year way
- 45:35Speaker 1: I talk, you know, because my legacy is sharing my
- 45:38Speaker 1: experiences with younger with the younger generation, let him know
- 45:41Speaker 1: it's possible. Absolutely, But what happened to me, I started
- 45:44Speaker 1: believing myself later in the game. I'm asking you to
- 45:47Speaker 1: believe in yourself now that the opportunity to gives follow
- 45:51Speaker 1: lead with him because those sad moments can't win and
- 45:55Speaker 1: what cannot beat you is you. And that's all I'm
- 45:59Speaker 1: saying in this interview because we got a lot to
- 46:02Speaker 1: talk about, because we're gonna get into that area. But
- 46:04Speaker 1: the journey is important for my listeners to here that
- 46:07Speaker 1: you're a special young man and you could have all
- 46:10Speaker 1: these credits, and then what do you do with those credits?
- 46:12Speaker 1: How do you build? How do you how you turn
- 46:14Speaker 1: opportunity into momentum? And this is what this conversation, this
- 46:18Speaker 1: is what this interview is about. You live in momentum.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Absolutely the shot. You know, I'm saying, that's momentum monum.
- 46:26Speaker 1: So that tour stop your singer actor, you know, double
- 46:32Speaker 1: hand of double had you know. But you know something,
- 46:37Speaker 1: You're humble, Yeah, you know because of the fact that
- 46:39Speaker 1: we got our time twitched up on this meeting. You
- 46:41Speaker 1: didn't you didn't you didn't jump, I go, I'm out.
- 46:44Speaker 1: You said, I'm hanging there. They you know, we're coming
- 46:46Speaker 1: to apologize about the time confusion. But that's important people
- 46:49Speaker 1: to understand. That's who you are, you know, because you
- 46:52Speaker 1: understand situations. You know, you do not gonna let an
- 46:55Speaker 1: emotional moment to an opportunity, because that's what this interview
- 46:58Speaker 1: is out. It's not to it. So we're gonna be
- 47:00Speaker 1: right back from my man. Two times sold I show
- 47:03Speaker 1: I'm put that in front the sold I shoowed out
- 47:05Speaker 1: chocolate drop. Luke James, Hi, this is Rushan McDonald to

- 48:13Speaker 1: This ra Sean McDonald and you're listening to money Making Conversations.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I said, move money Making Conversation. I have an incredibly
- 48:21Speaker 1: incredible guess man, I was really enjoying this interview because
- 48:24Speaker 1: it's an interview about the truth. Yes, and I think
- 48:27Speaker 1: the more and more I tell the truth on the
- 48:28Speaker 1: show Money Making Conversation, people understand why I do it.
- 48:32Speaker 1: And you are you, You share your your youthful, your
- 48:36Speaker 1: your the plight of saying I made a decision. I
- 48:38Speaker 1: was eighteen a lot of people making decisions with the
- 48:40Speaker 1: eighteen to go to college. But see that path wasn't
- 48:43Speaker 1: your path, you know why? You know, I knew early on.
- 48:49Speaker 1: I knew in school, I knew, and I knew in
- 48:51Speaker 1: high school I knew, I knew in I knew in
- 48:54Speaker 1: middle school. I remember I remember in middle school saying,
- 48:57Speaker 1: WHOA four more years of school at eighth grade? Remember
- 49:03Speaker 1: four more years? I don't know if I could do
- 49:05Speaker 1: another four after that, and then another four after that,
- 49:08Speaker 1: depending on what it is I want to do. And
- 49:11Speaker 1: you know, I realized, Man, I'm a I'm an artist.
- 49:15Speaker 1: I knew I was an artist, and I knew that
- 49:17Speaker 1: I needed to live life, and I knew life for
- 49:20Speaker 1: me wasn't happening inside of inside of the classroom. I
- 49:24Speaker 1: wish I'd have done better. I wish I would have
- 49:26Speaker 1: I would have I wish I had a more nurturing
- 49:31Speaker 1: environment to the way that I the way that my
- 49:34Speaker 1: particular mind thoughts, you know, and that way I would
- 49:39Speaker 1: have been more susceptible to um the actual lessons. And
- 49:43Speaker 1: then also the arts, because I think I was just
- 49:46Speaker 1: really big on arts and highly distracted and you know,
- 49:50Speaker 1: you know a d H. D on top of everything.
- 49:53Speaker 1: You know. You know, the thing about it is that
- 49:54Speaker 1: because your your age group get criticized or being visionaries
- 49:58Speaker 1: for being not parent I follow in the traditional path.
- 50:02Speaker 1: You know, my age group. You know, you're supposed to
- 50:03Speaker 1: go to college, get a good job. You know, then
- 50:06Speaker 1: you raise your family, get a retire, But all that
- 50:08Speaker 1: starts being shattered under your under your group. Yeah, pensions
- 50:13Speaker 1: and for one kis and jobs that never laid your
- 50:16Speaker 1: off and never fired you started firing you, and yeah,
- 50:18Speaker 1: company started getting swallowed up. So you were educated there
- 50:22Speaker 1: if there's no trust here, who did I trust but
- 50:24Speaker 1: myself but myself for myself. I put it all of
- 50:27Speaker 1: them on myself. I knew earlier on my mom. Knew
- 50:30Speaker 1: my mom my mom My mom was always on on
- 50:34Speaker 1: me about like this is your dream, this is your dream.
- 50:37Speaker 1: And at the end of the day, when you have
- 50:39Speaker 1: your kids, you have your wife, they're gonna look at you.
- 50:42Speaker 1: Why why you don't have this and that? Okay, now
- 50:44Speaker 1: we're gonna look at this this new CD. Yes you know, okay,
- 50:48Speaker 1: the title yes, because this has a love slash D Yes. Okay,
- 50:54Speaker 1: so it's two titles. Yes, I thought to feel love,
- 50:58Speaker 1: to feel loved. That's right, that's find that those are
- 51:00Speaker 1: two different things. You know, you can you can feel love,
- 51:05Speaker 1: you can feel loved and not feel loved, or you
- 51:08Speaker 1: can feel loved and not feel loved, you know, in
- 51:11Speaker 1: a sense of being able to reciprocate it, being in
- 51:14Speaker 1: a in a sense of you know, um, you know
- 51:18Speaker 1: it's around you, but you don't particularly feel it, and
- 51:23Speaker 1: that's you know, that's something that may not be something
- 51:26Speaker 1: you're about your surroundings, or it could be. But it's
- 51:30Speaker 1: also it's it's all either way it is. It's a
- 51:32Speaker 1: it's a you have to reflect on yourself, you have
- 51:35Speaker 1: to look into yourself and find out what those issues are.
- 51:38Speaker 1: And creating this album, that really was what it was
- 51:41Speaker 1: about for me. I just was in that place of
- 51:44Speaker 1: of not really feeling love or loved. And I definitely
- 51:48Speaker 1: had love, have love around me and have always had
- 51:50Speaker 1: love around me, but it's just I guess a numbing
- 51:54Speaker 1: that I was getting being in part of it, being
- 51:56Speaker 1: in the business and having and my life and you know,
- 52:01Speaker 1: they say, you know it's business and not personal, but
- 52:04Speaker 1: as an artist, everything is personal, you know. So because
- 52:07Speaker 1: we're we're all emotional people, yes, you know, it's really
- 52:10Speaker 1: it's really interesting when people, you know, when people look
- 52:13Speaker 1: at when I was a comedian or your your young
- 52:16Speaker 1: artists from a singing perspective, people look at you and
- 52:19Speaker 1: they go, you should be always happy. You should be
- 52:21Speaker 1: somewhere writing the song. I should be happy, you know, dude.
- 52:24Speaker 1: I see life differently. I see I see I see
- 52:27Speaker 1: probably more trouble than you see. I feel everything people don't.
- 52:32Speaker 1: People really don't understand. I feel like my I feel everything.
- 52:39Speaker 1: I feel hurt, I can I can feel joy. But
- 52:43Speaker 1: I mean there's a lot going on, and especially when
- 52:46Speaker 1: you when you're in the business, it can be it
- 52:48Speaker 1: can be tough when you're trying to really believe in yourself,
- 52:51Speaker 1: push yourself through something, and you find yourself in a box.
- 52:55Speaker 1: And I think this, this album is a bridge, right,
- 52:58Speaker 1: This is a bridge from that place to where I'm going, UM,
- 53:03Speaker 1: which is uh, which is way more, way more sweeter
- 53:06Speaker 1: and and and freeing because this is this is my
- 53:09Speaker 1: new endeavor, my first UH record as an independent artist,
- 53:13Speaker 1: you know, UM, A fearless move. Absolutely. I feel truly free.
- 53:19Speaker 1: I'm I'm in a new I don't I have a
- 53:22Speaker 1: new life, you know, new career path that that has expanded.
- 53:26Speaker 1: I've always prayed that that my uh, that I can
- 53:29Speaker 1: expand my that God allowed me to expand my territory.
- 53:32Speaker 1: And I didn't think it'd be like this, but I'm
- 53:37Speaker 1: grateful it is. Well, this is you know. I look
- 53:41Speaker 1: at your your a great smile and uh, and and
- 53:44Speaker 1: your your passion, and you're very honest. You know about
- 53:47Speaker 1: your pain. Because I think that if you, if you
- 53:50Speaker 1: tell the truth, then you have no reason a lie.
- 53:52Speaker 1: And I think that if if my story pushes you away,
- 53:56Speaker 1: then I needed to do. I want you to tell
- 53:58Speaker 1: my story a lot. You needed to hear it. You
- 53:59Speaker 1: need to hear it. And so so when we look
- 54:01Speaker 1: at the album, tell me talk about some of the
- 54:03Speaker 1: songs on the album. Why you approach the music that way?
- 54:06Speaker 1: Because you distinctively told that there's two titles here, so
- 54:10Speaker 1: there's two different tones that will be thrown out. How
- 54:13Speaker 1: many how many cuts on this nine cuts? Nine nine cuts? Um,
- 54:18Speaker 1: you know one of them one of them one of
- 54:20Speaker 1: the songs. Uh. And it's it's more of it what
- 54:24Speaker 1: you call it interlude? For me, if I'm looking at
- 54:27Speaker 1: looking at it like a play, then it's a it's
- 54:29Speaker 1: an intermission um. And this, this this intermission is called gratitude.
- 54:35Speaker 1: And it came about um in a in a moment,
- 54:38Speaker 1: a real honest moment where I needed to remind myself
- 54:43Speaker 1: how grateful, how blessed I am right right right, you know, Um.
- 54:48Speaker 1: You know, we all get in our heads and we
- 54:50Speaker 1: all think everything seems seems like everything is wrong and
- 54:53Speaker 1: not right. And at some point, you know, and and
- 54:56Speaker 1: and a lot of times in those moments, you gotta
- 54:58Speaker 1: you gotta take a breather. Everything is totally find that
- 55:00Speaker 1: that Champagne problems, that is really nothing to really allow
- 55:04Speaker 1: the rest of the day to go bad. So in
- 55:06Speaker 1: that moment, I happened to be in the booth in
- 55:08Speaker 1: the studio feeling that way. And yeah, I asked the
- 55:14Speaker 1: asked the engineer to give me a blank slate. Man,
- 55:16Speaker 1: I just need I just need to yell right now.
- 55:19Speaker 1: And I just started screaming, I am blessed, blessed, blessed,
- 55:24Speaker 1: I am blessed, blessed, blessed, And and that became I
- 55:29Speaker 1: was like, Wow, this is affirmation, this is something I need.
- 55:32Speaker 1: This anthem an anthem, and it's for me again. This
- 55:35Speaker 1: this album is very personal, these songs so from that
- 55:39Speaker 1: song that that's a that was a moment that I
- 55:41Speaker 1: felt like I needed and I needed to constantly hear that,
- 55:44Speaker 1: and why not make a song about it? And then wow,
- 55:46Speaker 1: I think other people would need the same thing. Uh,
- 55:49Speaker 1: moving on to another song called Traveling, where I travel
- 55:54Speaker 1: a lot. My life is like on the road all
- 55:56Speaker 1: the time, and I'm always in a hotel, a new
- 55:58Speaker 1: hotel all the time. I wish I've kept the keys
- 56:00Speaker 1: from each hotel. Isn't the worst when you wake up
- 56:04Speaker 1: and you go, yes, that's that's hard. I'm always I'm
- 56:08Speaker 1: way wait, wait, wait where again? What? I don't even
- 56:11Speaker 1: ask about the time. I don't even know. I don't
- 56:13Speaker 1: know what the time table is here. I'm just here,
- 56:16Speaker 1: you know. And so that I created a song called
- 56:19Speaker 1: Traveling because I just thought, you know, I spent a
- 56:21Speaker 1: lot of my times in the hotel, and when you
- 56:25Speaker 1: don't know where else to go for me, my imagination
- 56:28Speaker 1: runs wild, and I wanted to write something that was
- 56:33Speaker 1: very cerebral and kind of spoke to that that essence
- 56:36Speaker 1: of just um going on a voyage mentally thinking, putting
- 56:40Speaker 1: yourself where you want to be, thinking, thinking, thinking it first,
- 56:44Speaker 1: and then somehow you appear there, which I think that's
- 56:48Speaker 1: a manifestation. I think that's the power of that. I think,
- 56:51Speaker 1: I think that's you have to work on that and
- 56:53Speaker 1: constantly build that your your maniffesto Uphow Masquerade. It's a tour.
- 57:00Speaker 1: It is a tour, it's a promo tour. This is
- 57:02Speaker 1: this is a small intimate settings so I can get
- 57:05Speaker 1: reconnected with my my day ones and my new fans,
- 57:09Speaker 1: and and also this is new music and I want
- 57:11Speaker 1: to I wanna, I want to perform and work on
- 57:14Speaker 1: these records in front of people, but in the smallest setting.
- 57:17Speaker 1: We'll get bigger, we'll get larger, but right now, I
- 57:20Speaker 1: just want to touch the people. When I had Padda
- 57:23Speaker 1: Bell on the album came out a year and a
- 57:25Speaker 1: half ago, she wanted to do a small tool yeah,
- 57:28Speaker 1: because she wanted to touch the people, you know, intimate,
- 57:32Speaker 1: because you it's really interesting, man, because you know, I've
- 57:35Speaker 1: been in Madison Square Garden, you know the eighteen thousand people.
- 57:38Speaker 1: I've been in the Philips Arena fifteen people, and so
- 57:41Speaker 1: I know what you you can just because I'm they
- 57:44Speaker 1: laughing way back up there up there. I can remember
- 57:46Speaker 1: I started in the club. Yeah, yeah, which is way
- 57:50Speaker 1: more challenging, which you can see the eyeballs all the
- 57:52Speaker 1: way to the back. Yeah. Yeah. And so when they're
- 57:55Speaker 1: nodding their head, you can see all them no on
- 57:57Speaker 1: their heads, you know, is it work right? And that's
- 58:00Speaker 1: that's a beautiful feeling. And so so I can understand
- 58:03Speaker 1: why you're doing this type of tool because you have
- 58:06Speaker 1: the right to do that. You have the right to
- 58:07Speaker 1: test yourself. You have the right to span what's inside you,
- 58:10Speaker 1: what you feel is right. And a lot of people,
- 58:12Speaker 1: let's go for the bigger opportunity. Let's go for this. No, no,
- 58:16Speaker 1: i'ma tell you man, you could when you're gonna fall back,
- 58:18Speaker 1: we all fall back. But you gotta know how to
- 58:20Speaker 1: get up. You have to this right here giving you
- 58:23Speaker 1: the tools off how to stay up right. That's right,
- 58:25Speaker 1: stay stay up. Now. I'll be remiss if I don't
- 58:29Speaker 1: talk about the shot. Okay, okay, Chicago, let's get into it. Okay. Now,
- 58:33Speaker 1: the character you're playing, the little kid with the with
- 58:36Speaker 1: the with the dreads, I play his older brother. Now,
- 58:39Speaker 1: I'm gona tell you something. That look kid, which I
- 58:41Speaker 1: love because he runs with the little young kid kid
- 58:44Speaker 1: and uh and uh when you pull out that gun man.
- 58:48Speaker 1: I was always I've always been worried about that. If
- 58:51Speaker 1: you have not seen this shot, Luke James, You're coming
- 58:53Speaker 1: on this season as the older brother, and uh the story.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Uh really, I really cater to these three boards because
- 59:01Speaker 1: I'm always afraid for them, because if you know anything
- 59:04Speaker 1: about Chicago, Chicago in the summertime, it's like, dude, it's like, uh,
- 59:09Speaker 1: dead man walking for young black youth, especially around fourth
- 59:12Speaker 1: of July the holidays for some reason. And I know that,
- 59:15Speaker 1: And so when I look at this show, I see
- 59:17Speaker 1: this innocence and then I see then I see what
- 59:21Speaker 1: could possibly go wrong for the innocence. Then, so to me,
- 59:25Speaker 1: this character is perfect for you playing the older brother, absolutely,
- 59:28Speaker 1: because You've got a younger brother who thinks he knows
- 59:31Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think he thinks he knows everything. And
- 59:34Speaker 1: I'm the brother that has been through it already. Absolutely,
- 59:37Speaker 1: I've seen it already. I've been I've been to the
- 59:40Speaker 1: dark side, I've been near death, and I don't want
- 59:44Speaker 1: that for him, right, and so I come in. I
- 59:47Speaker 1: come in by any means necessary to get my little
- 59:50Speaker 1: brother out of to save him from this. That's amazing,
- 59:53Speaker 1: you know, you know where he's at the Yeah, you know,
- 59:56Speaker 1: if he's if he's willing to pack a gun. Yeah, yeah,
- 59:58Speaker 1: he's a man and his eye right, And so your
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: advice that you can give it. I'm just telling you
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: we don't have to look at the episode. If you're
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: if you're a fan of the show, I know what
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: you're walking into. Yeah you know, Yeah, where were you at?
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: That's the number more statement just coming out of his mouth. Yeah,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: where were you at? That? That was that? I mean,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: it was a fight. It's a fight. It's it's definitely
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: a fight. Because my character is the type of character
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: is just his way, you know, he I mean, they
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: have similar mentalities, they have very similar mentalities. My way
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: is the only way, you know. And and luckily my
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: character has a as a um has has has a
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: love that that is very supportive to him, but also
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: keep him to remind him of his younger self and
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: know and and to remind him that you can't just
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: approach your little brother the way you think as your
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: little brother, you must have you must approach him as
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: another man. You know. It's really interesting cause I have
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: six sisters and two brothers, and one of my younger brothers.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: I didn't realize how much how much he depended on
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: my guy. In some ways, I may have failed them,
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: you know. I have to say that honestly, because I
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: just I do. I was trying to live, I was
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: trying to grow up. I wish I were trying to
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: find out how to man, you know, And so that's
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: why this character I'm really interested in watching them and
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: seeing you in person here. I'm really interested because you
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: have some nice and tangible as a human being, and
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: I know you're gonna bring that to that role. You know.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: It's because when I say that, there's an innocence and
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: there's also a pain because of the fact that you
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: made mistakes because you're trying to find yourself. People got
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: just used the wrong way. Now this kid is coming
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: along with this kid and your younger brother going you
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: weren't there because watch you to listen to you. Okay,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: what can you do to make my life better? That's
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a challenge, man, that's like a foot in the face. Really,
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: I mean truly, I mean, this is what you see
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: is you. It's it's the hard truth. It's really true.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: It's really true, hard hard truth. Because I mean a
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: lot of a lot of men we go, we go
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: through that, and we we have to. It's I find
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: that it's a good opportunity for to be able to
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: show someone reaching back, someone having that that experience and
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: trying their hardest to not stay stay in that experience,
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: and to pull someone out of it, you know, not
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: just it, but you know, because he it feels like
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: he's just about his brother, but he cares about his
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: brother's friends because his brother cares about it his friends.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: So wherever his friends go, you know, his little brother
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: will go. So I need to care about his his
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: friends too, to make sure they're out of trouble and
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: understand what's what's at stake, and not to play these games.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: But it's so yeah, No, I'm really I'm really grateful
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: to be able to play this particular role in his character. Um,
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: because I've grown up around people like this and people
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: who have been through these things, and and and because
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: in some ways or community every soul food there's a
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: big Chicago as well as in New Orleans, you know, community,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: the hood, yes, the stand in it, yes, and being
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: proud of government influence right right right, you know. So
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: that's what I'm saying, Man, I'm excited about about seeing
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: you on this role this year. You know, I'm just
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: gonna I'm just gonna close and say this. You know,
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: intros are what they are. They talked about, they talk
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: about what you accomplish. But as we as we walk
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: through this interview, you see what you are accomplishing now,
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: and so see that's the merger, that's that's the value
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: of success. You know, you know, we gotta mention what
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: you did, but you always want to talk about what
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: you're doing. You're doing and so without tool, that's okay,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: you're doing the shot. You gotta ce d there and
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: you're chocolate drop. I mean, what is that a complaint
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: about life? It is so good? Oh? Two times Grammar nominated.

- 1:05:38Speaker 1: leaders and professionals and education, sports, business, healthcare, and related
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: fields and industries. He's on the show today discussed his
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: new book, Race Sports and Education, Improving Opportunities and Outcomes
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: of Blackmail college Athletes. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: Dr John Singer, Thank you for having me. I really
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: appreciate this opportunity to having this conversation. Well, I'll tell
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: you I have to reading the book I are. You know,
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: because you know Dr Harry Everett's in the book. We
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: were talking to a referencing the book I'm saying is
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: the book called Race Sports and Education. He this book
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: is about black mail caused athletes, and he suggested that
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: you should include the female experience of the black female
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: college athlete. And your reasoning for just going male was why? Well,
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: I think for me, being that this was my first
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: foray into an authored book, it was personal for me.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: I mean as a black male myself who had hoop
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: dreams and aspirations as a little boy growing up in
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: Betton Harbor, Michigan, and as someone who has worked more
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: closely with this particular population into my college years and
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: graduate studies and now as a faculty member, it was
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: just important for me to write about what I and
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: when I was most passionate about at this moment in
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: my career. So that's kind of why I went against
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: the stage wisdom and advice of Dr Edwards and for
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: this particular project, I had this stick with what what
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: was my passion? But you know, you you, you know
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: he is the like, let's say, the the the Messiah
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: of this particular field of study. You know, when you
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: think about him at the forefront of politics and and
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: black studies, and especially from an athletic standpoint, and whenever
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: you look at the espn is, you would always they
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: would always hunt him down. What does what does Dr
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: Harry Ewarts has to say? What is he speaking about?
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: And when you look at the footage of him from
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: the sixties, he looks the same. He's just as grey
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: in his in his mustache and his goatee, but he's
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: still brilliant. What what when we're gonna get to your book,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: But a person like that, what impact does he have
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: on a person like you? Yeah? So I remember seeing
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: him like an interview clip when I was an undergrad
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: at Michigan State, and I just found myself fascinated with him.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: I was like man. He comes out of that tradition
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: of the civil rights movement, Malcolm X's and you know,
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: the Black Canthers, but he tied his activism to the
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: context of sport, which really kind of got my attention
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: as a young you know, in my late teens, early twenties,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: going through undergrad and so it's amazing that, you know,
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: twenty plus years later, not only am I interacting with him,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: but he's endorsing my books. So he certainly planning a
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: seed in me. I would say that has started to
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: germinate at this moment in my my journey. Now this book.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Who are you trying to reach with this book as
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: far as readers are concerned, Right, So there's a couple
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: of different audiences. Um first and foremost the athletes themselves,
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: and this can include athletes behind and just black males.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: Because I think there's a message in this book if
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: you really pay attention to the nuances and the narratives
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: of the black mails that I do feature in the book,
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: there's something in there. I think for all athletes who
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: are traveling, you know, from high school into college sports.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: But more specifically, I really want to reach the decision
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: makers those individuals who are setting policies at the nt
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: double A and member institution level, those who are the
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: practitioners working more directly day to day with these athletes,
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: whether it's academic support for athletics or faculty on these
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: university campuses. So I'm really looking to read and for
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: that matter, people in secondary educations who are responsible for
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: preparing these athletes for higher education, so that those are
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: my my primary audiences. UM and then of course to
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: lay audience people who are just interested in in the
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: topic and sport and and educate. Shan will also find
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I think some value in this book. Well, they're what
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I call industry decision makers influencers. People can shape the
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: way uh people think, the decisions they can make about
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: their future or how they're living currently. And so the
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: book I found fascinating reading, especially We're gonna we don't
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: get the chapters two and three in a minute, but
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: I want to talk about the Black Barbershop. You know,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: I did a show on MTV called The Barbershop, and
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: it was about entertainment. And one of the things about
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: the Black Barbershop is that you know you're gonna get
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: your share of sports, You're gonna get your share of politics,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: and you're gonna get your share of entertainment. What was
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: your take on the Black Barbershop because just the fun part,
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: you know, of our conversation, and I enjoyed the reading
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: of the book, But when you when you get into
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: that barbershop, it's a different space there, man oh man.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: You know, and my good friend and brother, Richard Milner
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: actually wrote the series forward for the book and Eve
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: he talked about the black barbershop and the beauty shop,
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: and have his observations in that space really speak to
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: I mean, there's a lot of theorizing. I know, we
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: as academics of scholars, we you know, we pride ourselves
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: and you know, engaging with theory to make sense of
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: the world. But in the black barbershop, that's exactly what
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: you get. It's not in the formal sense, but certainly
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: you have people with keen insights into these issues. So
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: the black barbershop, even my current barber, um, you know,
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: I know something about sport, you know, and and the
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: patrons sitting around waiting for their hair because you started
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: talking about sport, boy, you see a different type of sight,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: endity and whatnot in that space. So absolutely, and I
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: was glad that that brother rich Dr Brother Richard Milner
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: used that metaphor to introduce my book in his in
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: his Race and Education series for Hybard Education Press. Well,
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: you know, it's really funny, you know, because the movie
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: that the Ice Q made and of course centric the
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Entertained and started the very first barbershop was the closest
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: version of the very first one. All all those are good,
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: but the very first one is the closest version of
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: walking into a typical black barbershop, you know, opinionated. You
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: always got somebody who's bigger than life in there, and
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: you always have people who sit around and putting information.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: You have young generations because people women were bringing their
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: young kids or the fathers are bringing their kids for
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: their first haircuts. And you have older generation people sitting
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: in there. And so it allows you to think about
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: so many different layers of experiences that you can get
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: just by walking in there. And it's all tied to sports,
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: and sports is such a it crosses racial lines, but
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: it is racial, you know, whether it's the black quarterback
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: situation of the you know, I was watching ESPN last night.
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: They did this special call the Year the Black quarterback.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: You know, when you talk about Russell Wilson, you're talking
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: about Patrick Mahomes, you're talking about Lamar Jackson, who who's
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: unanimous m v P. And there was a guy who
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: was the fifth quarter back drafted in the year he
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: was drafted, and so because people thought he should be
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: actually trying out for to be a ride receiver and
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: not be trying to try not to be a quarterback.
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: And so you know, these these individuals who are changing
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: the game, how does that affect your book? Yeah, that's interesting.
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: One of the it was in chapter two the case
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: study I did, one of the athletes featured in that
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: case study talked about that, how you know, even as
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: college coach, when they were bringing a white quarterback in
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: the black quarterback model, that black quarterback with the label
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: of athletes. You know, when clearly from the perspective of
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: this young man that I featured in chapter two, he
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: was the best quarterback and best athlete on the team,
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: and he didn't understand why coaches want to limit his
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: access to that quarterback leadership decision making positions. So certainly,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: the athletes that I've engaged within my research recognized the
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: very point that you're making well. You know, I think
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: that a book like yours has to be written, and
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: it has to be you know, we can't all have
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: we have to have factual information about what's just really
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: going on out there. And uh, when I was reading
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: your book, and like I said, you you you you
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: follow three characters because you didn't really give details on
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: exactly who they were, exactly what college they played on,
- 1:14:21Speaker 1: exactly what protein they played on. But you shared their
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: position in college, you share their position when they left college.
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: And the three characters played a major role in how
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: each transition away from the sport based on how the
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: sport treated them and and and it's really important that
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: people understand that sports is such a you know, everybody
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: wants to be the next you know, Russell Wilson or
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: the next you know, Jared Rice or the next. But
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: then you have this this this collegiate force or this
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: college force out there. And you said the h w
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: c U, and I really versus the HBCU because those
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: are two options out there, but they are perceived options
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: for success. When I say h w c U, we're
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: talking about historical white college and universities, and you have
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: HBCU historia historical Black college and university. Explain those dynamics
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: for us my listeners. Yeah. So, I mean, if you
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: really think about prior to the late nineteen sixties and
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: early nineteen seventies, that's where the black talent really emerged.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: You talking about Jerry Rice, I mean he was He's
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: a product of an HBCU and many of the great
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: prior to the late sixties early seventies, and Harry I
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: was writing about this stuff. When he first began writing
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: about this stuff, all the black talent was there. But
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: once these historically white institutions began to realize there was
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: golden in their hills, as they say, that's when they
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: started cherry picking the best and the brightest. Historian Gerald
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: Eally talked about it was HBO did a documentary in
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: the late nineties called The Journey of African American Athlete.
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: He talked about this mass uh influx of black athletes
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: into these historical institutions in the early seventies, and the
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: real key moment was in nineteen seventy three they talked
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: about in this documentary when Sam Damn Cunningham, that's right,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: came down to Alabama, Alabama. He went down and just
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: ran all over Paul bear Bryant's all white Alabama squad.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: You had the Alabama fans and the stands at the
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: late Great Eddie Robinson said talking about get us one,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: get us one, talking about a black athlete, you know,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: to to the dominating. The next year, Alabama certainly brought
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: in Wilbert Jackson, absolutely, and that just let everybody know
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: about that game. USC dominant West Coast College, University of
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: Southern California and Sam Bam Cunningham. When you give him
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: a Vaux, he'd leap over the line. He wouldn't run
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: through the last, he'd leap over and so so so
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: it was like there was nothing we've ever seen in
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: college football. And the jewel against you know, the vauntede
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: or the legendary you know Bear Bryan team was was
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: was incredible. And also you know the Nebraska team led
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: by Johnny Rogers and uh, those teams changed the way
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: people saw black athletes. And then then when Jimmy Johnson
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: went down to Miami and found that the southern version,
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: the southern tip of Florida where all the black athletes
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: that nobody wanted to recruit, that had all the speed.
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: That's really started changing the face. But then they called
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: the athletes that he recruited convicts. M hm. They called
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: the athletes that, not that they recruited Catholics and so
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: so they they named them. So so when I started
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: reading your book, you know, it just started bringing back memories, doctor,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: you know so so you know you I'm one of
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: those industry decision Makercy. This is impromptu information you've given
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: me that I'm just I'm just expounding. Let's just then
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: you know how important that your your book is and
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: needs to be be be studied but also served because
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: sociology changed my life. We gonna be back in a
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: minute on our next break, because you got me fired up, Doc,
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: You got me fired up. Man. This book is a
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: is a is a great read. I'm talking to about book.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: I'm talking to Dr John Singer his book Improving Opportunities
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: and our Calms for blackmail college Athletes. We'll be road
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: back in more money Making Conversations from McDonald The Money
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: Making Conversations Don't touch that dog. Money Making Conversations continues
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: online at www. Dot money Making Conversations dot com and
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: follow money Making Conversations on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Ladies
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: and gentlemen, it's time you stop thinking about your dreams
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: and put some plans into action. You're listening to money
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: making Conversations. I'm the host ras Sean McDonald. I'm speaking
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: to Dr John Singer. He has a book called Race,
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: Sports and Education and Improving Opportunities and Our Calms for
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: black Mail College Athletes. My show is about entertainment. My
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: show is about entrepreneurship. UM. I feel it's the topics
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: that you're talking about. It's about money. It's about how
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: the uh, the institution we call the n C double
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: a uh. Some people call it their money making institutions.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Some people have called the a plantation. Some people have
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: called it an environment. But I I feel that, yes,
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: you can say that, but it also impacts white students
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: as well, white student athletes as well. And so but
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: we're talking about the black student athlete. And so you
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: track three different talents in your book. Why did you
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: choose these three individuals and why were they stories so
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: unique to your book? Well? Interesting? Right? So that particularly
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: you're talking about chapter two in the book is really
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: is um? That chapter is based on my dissertation work. UM.
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: And one of the reasons I don't you kind of
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: mentioned earlier in our conversation that I don't get specifically
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: about the institution. That's because of i RB protocol universities
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: and where you have to protect the confidentiality of your
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: research participants. But this research that our feature of these
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: three black males one of the reason I chosen in
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: particulars because they expressed an interest in the topics. So
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: I had a connection with one of the brothers who
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: was an academic counselor in the athletic department, and he
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: told these particular athletes about my, my, my dissertation research,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: and and they were very interested in in in sharing
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: their story and their voices and helping to create knowledge
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: around the topics. So that's kind of why those particular
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: individuals mating into the book, because they were willing participants
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: and wanted to share this critical conversation that we had
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: that formed the basis of chapter two. And all three
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: in play football college football, played football, and they were
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: all high levels recruits, you know they were. They were
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: high level blue chip athletes coming out of high school,
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: and they all some point in time had a step
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: in the NFL beyond their their college days. They were
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: that talented um on the field field of play to
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: the point where they all got a shot with varying
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: degrees of success at the NFL level. But I love
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: the fact that they all arrived in different ways. One
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: was a free agent, one was drafted in the later rounds,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: and one was drafted in the early rounds. And we
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: all know that that's a salary tied to that. And
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: two of them became are in the fields of in
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: the are in the field of acting, and one in
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: the field of sales, and so which which which? Which
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: is really interesting because in my I'm running into more
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: and more athletes of the gentleman who want an oscar.
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: Matthew Cherry was a former professional football player, and so
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: so I'm running into more and more athletes and I
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: and I really the reason the reason I'm really excited
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: about communicating with you, because I'm really involved in a
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: lot of HBCU activity, trying to really build a branded
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: the awareness of what HBCU bringing to the table not
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: only in athletics but academics, but also your book is
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: about branding and marketing too, because it's about perception. Because
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: that when you start, because that's why a lot of
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: kids go to UH historical White college university because of
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: the fact that it's perception that I can get drafted
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: or I get a better opportunity to UH, to be
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: seen on TV. That's important to these young people today
- 1:22:24Speaker 1: as it is in the past. Correct. No, yeah, absolutely,
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: And that conversation has come up in mind not only
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: my formal research with black male athletes, but also when
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: I was academic advisor and mentor of a summer Bridge program.
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: A lot of them this struggle with the decisions to say, Hey,
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: I want to consider HBCU, but I know where I'm
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: at in my career, where we're at in society. It
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: behooves me to go to the historically white college because
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: of the media visibility, the platform, the resources to get
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: me to the next level. So I've had many conversations
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: with blackmail athletes over the years about that, you know,
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: decision to consider HBCU, but to look at the platform
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: and the resources at these historical at Consor University, even
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: though it's been proven that if you do have the talent,
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: you know Steve McNair HBCU graduate at quarterback Tennessee Titans, UH,
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: Doug Williams, of course, Gramlin UM, Jared Rice Mississippi Valley State,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: I believed. And then also recently the Houston Texans drafted
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: a young man out of a police South Carolina State officer,
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: Tackle uh from our HBCU school. So and then also
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Darre's Leonard last year he was a HBCU grad and
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: major Pro Bowl. So we're starting to see. And also
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: I know that the NFL is now holding a separate
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: HBCU college combine. So so it's a lot of things
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: that are happening. Then it calls that shift may not
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: be dramatically, but if if that shift started to happen,
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: what would that do in the in the book that
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: you've readden, would it would it be? Would it be
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: a good thing if that shift started happening towards the
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: hbc you're starting to see more quality talent to attend
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: or just as quote, that's that's a very interesting question
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: because I talked a little bit about that in the
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: conclusion of my book right where that's a consideration that
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: we have to think about. I think about my dear
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: sister Jamaal Hill, who is a fellow Michigan State sparknerl
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: we were there at the same time. She talks about that,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: how now is the time for us to seriously consider that.
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: It's interesting. I'm this Thursday, February thirteenth, I'm giving a
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: talk about my book at prairiew A and m um
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: Fred Bonner has what he called the Building on Resilience
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: lecture series and he asked me to come and talk
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: about my book and you know implications it has for
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: college sport widely speaking. And so I think it's time
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: to have that conversation. And in light of what Harry
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: was referred to as the fourth waves of athlete activism,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: where athletes are now many corporations in their own rights,
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: you know, I mean with the social media media platform,
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: these athletes are being more empowered too to control their
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: own you know, brand and destiny. So I think it's
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: a serious conversation that we can't ignore this dismissed as
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: I will never be possible because the allure of h
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: H W c U S is just too powerful. I
- 1:25:36Speaker 1: think that I don't know, the conversation is right and
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: to be had, well, it's right to be had, but
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: will it be you know, achieved? And I'm not look out, look,
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: I'm not trying to shut down by school, the University
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: of Houston. I'm just trying to let individuals though there
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: are options, and sometimes special people don't look at HBCU
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: as an option. And I'm just letting people know that
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: if you're talented and you want to be in and
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: you do the right things in life and gets what,
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: you can participate in the sport, especially in football. Now
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: that's not showing up in baseball, that's not showing up
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: in basketball like that, but in football has proven that
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: if you got the talent, they will find you and
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: you can also and that's that's very true. Yeah, And
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: I'll give you an example. So I referee high school
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: and college basketball here in Texas when I'm not doing
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: my university work, and one of my fellow co officials
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: has a son who is, you know, senior this year
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: being recruited and I don't know if he's signed on
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: signing day February five, but he told me after his
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: son read my book, he is seriously now considering going
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: to an HPC. You have to read my book. I
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: mean that really did my heart good when I got
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: that text message from him saying that, you know, because
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: he's considering, you know, some of the some of the
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: major Division one schools here in the state of Texas.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: But now you know the Texas Southern's and the prairie
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: views are in the conversation for this young man and
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: his family that that's really good because I don't care
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: who are you at, because let's let's look at the
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: college world is out there. You know, if you if
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: you're in the traditional h uh, historical right colleges, Okay,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: that means that even there that it's you have the
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: Power five, the Power five conferences, and then like I
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: go to University Houston, it's not a Power of five conference.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: You know, it's a lesser conference. So even in that world,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: there's divisions, there's saying you're better, you can you can
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: hang out down there, and you have the Division two,
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: you have Division one playoff systems, and then you have HBCUs.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: So no matter where you go, they're gonna be opportunities
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: for you. And you could be perceived like Terrance ed
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Oliver Oliver when he signed with the University of Houston
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: and he's and they said, why that's not a poalified school.
- 1:27:49Speaker 1: He would never make it. Guess what he winded up
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: in the number nine picking the draft because his talent
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: is still he still gave effort, he still shined. And
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: so I'm just letting everybody know when I read your book,
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: that's only what used to applying with me with information,
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: but you also affirming what I believe. If you, if
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: you make the right effort, if you put yourself in
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: the right support system, and then don't let people sway
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: you with negativity, then you can follow your dreams no
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: matter where it leads you. That's what the basis of
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: your book is correct, That's right. And these athletes nowadays,
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: they want to get on the field or the court.
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: They want to have opportunities to play and and and
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: maybe it's a situation where they realized, hey, let me,
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: let me come on home. One of my doctors and
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: one of my doctors and I did a study where,
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: you know, we looked at a young man. He was
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: a five star recruit coming out of high school who
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: started at Alabama but eventually ended up at at Winston
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: Salem State University, and we we we framed that we
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: didn't We presented at a conference and we framed that
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: redefining the conveyor belt, you know, William Roden's turn and
- 1:28:57Speaker 1: how these athletes are recruited from their community from early
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: age on through you know, high school into college and
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: how this particularly young man redefined the conveyor belt and
- 1:29:07Speaker 1: and looking at his story and talking about how he
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: you know, ended up at home at the end of
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: the day when he was in here that space car
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Winston Salem State University, even though there wasn't the accolade
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: the past to it that in Alabama provides at the
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: end of the day as a man, he found that
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: landing spot, that where he finished his career to be,
- 1:29:31Speaker 1: you know, after him going comfortable. So it's pretty comfortable
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: and relatable because that's what it's all about, you know,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: in the end, man, if you're trying to pursue your dreams,
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: and I say, who I'm speaking to is Dr John
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: Singer Um. His book it's about it's about letting people
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: know that as a black athlete, your experience is different
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: and it should be acknowledged. Because you're talking about or
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: more college profectors. You talk about tutors, you talk about
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: mentors because you know you you're throwing into a world
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: that's really not trying to adjust for you. And that's
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: really what can happen to students and so that's all
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: I'm saying, is that, sure you can be recruited, Sure
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: you can go to the school, but is it is
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: it accepting who you are as a person where you
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: know as much smaller environment they can allow you to
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: grow as a person, because that's all you want when
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: you go to college. You won't grow. You want an
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: opportunity to walk away and be a successful person in
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: a field that is not athletically driven. And that's what
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: the three people that you chose and which I liked
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: because you know, one he left he was a free agent.
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: You know, he had a family, but he still went
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: to l A and guess what, he's a he's working
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: as a successful actor. And then one he was a
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: he's a late round draft pick, but he saved his money,
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: played several years in the NFL. And then he doesn't
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: have a wife or kid, so but he saved his money.
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: So he's out there, but he's not he's not effectively
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: pursuing his career, like he won't at the pace that
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: he want, but at least he's doing it. And then
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: the other one, it's a salesman. He's out there using
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: this academic training, using this the things that he learned
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: by going to the school and allowing him to live
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: a successful life. But that's all you want from a college.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: From college education, that's all the opportunity you want. College
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: college owe you anything. Dr Well, you know, one of
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: the things that I talked about this in the book,
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: Area was saying is that at the end of the day,
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: education is an activists pursuit, right, And if you don't
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: as an individual, even though there's issues that we can
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: talk about with the system and the structure, if you know,
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: as an individual, don't prioritize that, that's on you. So
- 1:31:38Speaker 1: I think, you know, that's one of the messages I
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: do want people to take from the book as well
- 1:31:42Speaker 1: that I'm very as Herod was said in his endorsement book,
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: I'm very hard on the system and my critique of it,
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: but I'm also uh cognizant of the fact that the
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: individual has to step up and make it their education
- 1:31:58Speaker 1: a priority and or activists pursue. So in other words,
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: what you're saying is, if somebody gives you an opportunity,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: take advantage of it. Because the three people that volunteered
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: to be a part of your research, they use their
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: athleticism to be educated, and I feel they're living good
- 1:32:15Speaker 1: lives because they were able to go to college. But
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: the the athleticism wasn't the end all. It was just
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: a state to a better life. And that's what that
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: was my biggest takeaway from your book. In the book
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: I'm talking about is race, sports and education improving opportunities,
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: which what college education can do an outcome for blackmail
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: college athletes. My man, Dr John Singer, I'm a fan.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: Please tell everybody how they can locate your book. Do
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: you have a website your social media information? Oh? Yeah,
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: Well the best way probably is just to go directly
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: to either Harvard Education Press website or either Amazon. That's
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: that's really the popular way to get the book. Um
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: at this point, um, I am on Twitter, I am
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: on Facebook. Um, So I don't have a website at
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: this point for the book. But as I talk more
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: about this book and and uh it gets more attention,
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: I will be setting that type of thing up. So well,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: my job is to give your attention, sir, because I
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: enjoyed it and I wish you good luck. I always
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: know that Rushan McDonald is a friend of yours, and
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: there your book has only opened my eyes to let
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: me know that I'm gonna continue to fight. But college
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: changed my life. I didn't play sports, But if I
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: didn't go to colleges, I didn't pursue the opportunity to
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: college presented to me, I would not be the man
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: I am today. Look to your children's eyes to see

- 1:35:45Speaker 1: Conversation for the very first time, Mr Robert brace Hey,
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: thank you for having me and to lay out there
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: many as going on in your life, man for credits
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: are all about huh yeah, yeah, I'm pretty busy, but
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: it's still good. God, it's been good for sure. Okay,
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: I gotta gotta give us the background on the accent. Okay.
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: I am originally from London, England, and I moved to
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: New York in my twenties to be a professional ballet
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: and modern dancer. So that's where that's where the accents
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: comes from. Now, I was reading good By always a
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: soloist ballet dancer. Yes, I was a soloist at the
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: Metropolitan Opera ballet Um. That was one of the things
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: I did during my career. Actually tame me on soolarship
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: to the Albany School just for the summer. I'm supposed
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: to go back to England and I just never made
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: it back. I've been her under since so um so yeah,
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: well you know, I really I brought that up. Solo wids.
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: You know that you have that by yourself. That means
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: that you know slouch. You have to have your skill
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: game together, oh for sure. Well yeah, coming to New York,
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: New York, New York as a beast and uh, you know,
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: to to compete here and especially to come from another country,
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: you got to be serious. So yeah, it was it
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: was good. I had a good time perfore me in
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: New York. Well, great New York is one of my
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: favorite cities. It was the funny story I was sharing
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: with you. I was in New York yesterday being interviewed
- 1:37:15Speaker 1: by London Rio my man Brian Rose. He was in
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: town and uh he was doing an interview on one
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: one oh two Mulberry Street. And I realized that, I say,
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: now you know, I do all my my research. And
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: I looked up and I went, I think Robert Robert
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: prices on the street at one thirty two. So I
- 1:37:33Speaker 1: rolled down to one thirty two. You right above Birt
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Toe's clamhouse. Uh tweet two. E walked up the stairs
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: at one level, knocked up the wrong the bell a
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: couple of times. You know, they want to be banging banging,
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: banging banging, And I said, okay, I was. I was
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: surprised if with a good story that I, oh you know.
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: That's how I man, I'm I try to really relate
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: to the people who come on my show of half
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: time to go by and shake their hands and say hi.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: That's all I was doing yesterday. Awesome, man, next time
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: you're in time, man, that that would have been great. Well,
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: like I said, it was impromptu because of the fact
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: that my original interview was at one and then it
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: was a big parade that was going on in that
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: area yesterday and they pushed it down to three o'clock
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: so they can avoid the noise. And that allowed me
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: to really sit down and research where I was at.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: And I just noticed your address and I went, I
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: got at least I got at least tell him I
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: came by, at least even I don't see him. Now. Now,
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: why did you choose your studio location at one thirty
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: two Mallberry Street, Unit to eat? You said, yes, uh
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: number two? He said, why did I choose that location? Sir? Uh? Well,
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: we originally were in Soho and I had two partners
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: and great people, but the business was more parlates and
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: it wasn't really really aligned with what we were doing,
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: and we came to the end of our least now
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: one of the things that's unique about our business, which
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: we're very proud of. We train all everybody's welcome, we're inclusive,
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: but we have a very strong African American, high performing
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: female clientele. UM and we you know, we'll get into
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: it in a bit. I imagine that we're about the mind,
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: body and soul comboding with my career as a dancer,
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: and then I was also a minister in home for
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: six years where my wife I wanted a space where
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: we could explore how to connect mind, body and soul
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: in the place that especially black women, women of color
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: could feel safe. And you know, the Leader is a
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: great location. People can get to it and anywhere our
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: specific location and you know, and more practically, it was
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: one of the only spaces in New York that already
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: had the soundproofing UM already built in. So I saved
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: quite a bit of money doing that. But but that
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: was it. That was it. Now you were you saying
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: something interesting? You say were women of color can feel safe?
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: What does that mean? Well? Listen, UM a few things.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: One I'll tell the story definitely whose you know, Pharmacy
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: of BT. She invited me to do a wellness workshop.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: She has this accomplished call leading women to find it's
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: a hundred and fifty of the highest profile women in
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: business and entertainment and piannthropy. So we went out there
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: and I did a workshop which was fitness, but there
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: was also a meditation, there was also affirmations. UM, it
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: was those spiritual as well. And in that UM in
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: that workshop we had I heard people coming up to me,
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: UM crying and saying, thank you so much for seeing us,
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: thank you so much for thinking about us. And then
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: when I go to events, we had different the partners.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: We had our partners with the athletics store and stuff,
- 1:41:03Speaker 1: we rebooked them. And then again women coming up and saying,
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: you know, we don't have a place that weekly go
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: that celebrates us, that celebrates connects who we are, where
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: our bodies. We don't have to steel like we are
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: other and and so for me it's UM, it's just
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: a badge of honor to be able to support uh
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: black women. And we have an incredible clientele, like I said,
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: double e Angela Ry June Ambrose, UM, we have all
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: of these fantastic women Lisa Price, Carol's daughter, and so
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: if don't forget my girl WLS o days of Dasa,
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: who has been with us from day one when we
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: had no gym we had we were just in, you know,
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: renting out spaces Desil who's awesome, UM, so shout out
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: to her and she's doing awesome things as well. But
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: but yeah, we um they felt like they wanted a
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: community that celebrated them, and we even created a book
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: called The Magic, which celebrates the wellness journeys of Black
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: women and and so yeah, that's that's a badge of
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: honor for us. Look, I'm married to a beautiful Black
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: woman and two beautiful Black daughters, and my life is
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: also an entrepreneur um and so I see daily the
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: struggle that she goes with in terms of doing doing
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: what she needs to do out there with her business,
- 1:42:33Speaker 1: but also managing her stress levels and all that. So
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: I'm surrounded by it. So it's just, you know, something
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: I'm very touching about. Well, you should stay that way.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: I have six sisters, so I feel and it can
- 1:42:46Speaker 1: relate to being able to uh their paint that their
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: pain is women to paint as African American or Black
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: women is a different experience and it should be understood
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: as a different experience. It should, but in the study
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: it needs to be communicated differently, handled differently, and realize
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: that their challenges should be recognized and also appreciated their
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: efforts to overcome those challenges. Then that's part of the
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: whole mind body and soul connector. You know that you
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: have that, that's your monica known in the Finnish community.
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: Is the mind body soul connector? Talk about that? Yes, Well,
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: I think when it comes to mind, body and soul
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: it can almost seem ethereal. Like you, you can't put
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: your finial on exactly what it is, right, and so
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: I think it's really important to clearly define it for
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: people and make the connection. And so what do I
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: mean in the most basic form is this? You know,
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: like I said, I have a church background, and when
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: you think of any kind of faith based organization, um
- 1:43:43Speaker 1: or doesn't have to be an organization any spiritual part. Right,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: what people are typically looking for is uh spiritual qualities
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: like joy, like peace, a sense of control over their life,
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: a sense of control over their mind, and clear thinking.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: And so we we go to these both on the
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: spiritual path in search of these qualities. What I found
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: when I was dancing and when I started to move,
- 1:44:09Speaker 1: is that I would I would be feeling these things,
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: but I just thought it was because I was enjoying
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: my dance career and living my life. But once you
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: really connect with movement, you start to understand that when
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: you move, your body produces serotonin. Sarah Toonin is known
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: as the joy hormone because it produces joy. So if
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: you've ever had a workout and you come out feeling
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: great about yourself, that's the serotonin what and dolphins are
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: also produced when you work out, and in dolphins are
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: known to give you a sense of calm and peace
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: and actually relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety as
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: much as prescription meditation. So you move your body, you
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: you work out, you get joy, you get peace. Exercise
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: gives your gives increases the prioritizing function of your brain.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: So if you are prone to eating too much, shopping
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: too much, whatever, to much, and you need a sense
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: of control over your life and your decisions, exercise does
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: that for you. It gives you and also more options
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: to the brain so you can think more clearly. I
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: could go on, but those qualities of joy, a peace,
- 1:45:12Speaker 1: a sense of control thinking can all be accessed through
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: the temple of your body. And what we try to
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: do in our workouts is everything from when you walk
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: in the energy producing drinks that you're given, the workout
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: that you're given, where you're connecting with other people, increasing
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: that sense of joy, love and connection. We meditate at
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: the end of every single workout um the inducers we
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: give at the end to give you that sense of
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: control over your appetite and a sense of calm over
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: your well being. So even at the end of each
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: session we meditate. We give our clients cooling agil masks,
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: our calm the spirit they get chills. I like the
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: fact that can I just tell you just uh, Robert,
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: that whole meditating thing I think is important because I'm
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: a guy. I'm just talking about being right now. And
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: I know you're dealing with women of color, but you know,
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: I'm so hyper in the system. I gotta go. I'm
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: tied to time. I work up at the same time
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: every day. That to me really calms you. You know.
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: I think that's the de stressor in your whole process
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: is telling you, hey, don't run out the door. Let's
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: let's relax, let's let's let's bring all that down and
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: let's think about well, you're that's the that's the soul
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: connecting part of it, is it? Well, absolutely absolutely and
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: and what you just said is absolutely correct. Is helping
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: people understand it's okay to slow down for five to
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: ten minutes, to meditate, get your breathing right, focus your mind,
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: because you know, people many something well I don't know
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: how to meditator, can't do it. And what we have
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: is more of a guided meditation, so it helps you
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: through um. But yeah, it's so important to stop, take
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: a moment and be woe. Yeah, because you know it's
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: important that you know, we all want to be successful,
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: we all want to drive, and and New York is
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: already everybody stays it's in high stress. It's a high
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: stress city. You know, people pushing around, is crowded traffic.
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: You know, you can eat on the streets, you can eat.
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: You know, there's so many different layers of movements, so
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: many ethnic groups just just keeps crossing. As you cross
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: the street, you can be amongst five or six different
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: ethnic groups. And so when you when you speaking different
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: languages as well, and so when you're dealing with that
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: level of stress, you know, I get up in morning,
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: like four o'clock, and I think about incorporate what you're
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: talking about more so because I do that, I kind
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: of go downstairs and my my room, I stretch and
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: and but I turn on the TV. I think I'm
- 1:47:48Speaker 1: gonna turn off the TV and then just start talking
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: to myself more and just just getting myself more and
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: more focused for the day, because that's good advice that
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: you're giving to everybody, and and it's relatable with everybody.
- 1:48:01Speaker 1: Slow it down, think about what your day is, think
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: about what you've just accomplishing, like appreciate who you are,
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: Appreciate your surroundings, connect with your body, and feel good
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: about the opportunities that this day is giving you that
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: you're being blessed with. That's the that's the that's the
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: minister side of you that comes in and and moves
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: us forward, which is awesome. Absolutely, absolutely, I think the
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: first hour of your day and the lost hour of
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: your day are very important. I'm loving this interview. My friend.
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: I'm talking to Robert Brace, my man. He's the money mind, body,
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: soul connector. We'll be right back with more and talking
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: about this day Challenge wellness program that he has started
- 1:48:42Speaker 1: and talking about the influences that are tied to that program. Again,
- 1:48:45Speaker 1: We'll be back with more with my man Robert Brace
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: from Macha McDonald. The Money Making Conversations don't touch that dog.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations continues online at you w w dot
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: money Making Conversations dot com, and follow Money Making Conversations
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: you stop thinking about your dreams and put some plans
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: into action. Knowing the Phone is former Ballet Answer Turn
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: celebrity trainer. He's known as the Mind, Body, Soul Connector
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: of New York City. He's a celebrity fitness trainer and
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: television personality. He has coming up what I call a
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: very program. We know, where's the first quarter? People always
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: talk about I got a resolution. I want to change
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: my life, whether it's weight or gain, or dating or
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: habits they feel they need to break. And it's always
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: good to capture people when they have that mindset that
- 1:49:42Speaker 1: they want to create change. Isn't that correct, Robert Oh,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: that is absolutely correct. You know, this is the time
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: of the year when everybody's thinking about that change and
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: excited about it, and so I think if we can
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: just harness that feeling so it doesn't it doesn't feed
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: her out by the end of the month, and then
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: we can do some good things in we're talking to
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: talk about this twenty eight days of workouts for my
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: twenty eight day Challenge program that you created. Okay, So,
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: first of all, the original twenty eight day Challenge was created.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: I had a friend of mine who was as a
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: comedic filmmaker. He wanted to make so all of these
- 1:50:21Speaker 1: magazine articles where they said you can get six pack
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: ads in study days, right, it comes to me it says,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: I want to do a video where and I want
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: to see if this connectually happened. So we went at it.
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: I took on the challenge and instead of thirty days,
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: we totally transformed this body in twenty eight days. And
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: so that was in two thousand and eleven, and at
- 1:50:40Speaker 1: the time, we got postal a million views on that video,
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: and so people started to seek me out and my
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: team to do the twenty eight day challenge. So we've
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: been doing that for years. And then as I transitioned
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: more into mind, body and soul um that twenty eight
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: day challenge now includes the meditate ations, the affirmations and
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: also UM Mindset, Mindset and make over points, which are
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: little motivational stories from my training experience, from my life
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: that help you kind of see fitness in a different way.
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: And so what we're doing at the beginning of the
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: year is if anybody goes to my Instagram which is
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: at Robert Brace b R a C and you hit
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: the link in a buyer, you will get twenty eight
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: days of workouts from my twenty challenge program, twenty eight
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: days of guided meditations with affirmations that are relieve stress,
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: fining peace, and set your intentions for the year, as
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: well as twenty eight days of the wellness motivation chips
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: and insight from our personal life right. And we're also
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: doing in studio events which we live stream with some
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: of your favorite influences. Were just in one with Nourished Cross,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: who is the first plus size model winner on project
- 1:51:53Speaker 1: We're on wing UM and so it's a lot of
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: complimentary free content that you yet it's has to give
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: you everything you need for a complete nine body and
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: soul transformation UM, including everything that we do in our challenge.
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: Before you added was exactly because you know this is
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: what exactly is that what what did you do? What
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: were you did you change the food eating habits? Was
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: it specifically as she worked on period? Are you still
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: use the same technique or I know you've said you
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: added the the the the meditation and the condition and
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: all that. What was that original challenge about? Well, the
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: original challenge, Yes, it's food and it's exercise. The background
- 1:52:41Speaker 1: to that story as when I was dancing. I started
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: dancelate my dance career. I started at fifty and I
- 1:52:47Speaker 1: was losty enough to get into a program because I
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: was still athletic and I had some flexibility. But part
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: of that is I was on an accelerated program and um,
- 1:52:56Speaker 1: it was great, but some of it they didn't really
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: teach me perfect technique, so I ended up I was
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: always getting injured. And then I was one day I
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: was in in a nun's class where they're doing the
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: big tricks, um, and you're doing all these giants and
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: turning in the air, and I came down from a
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: jump and I heard a crack in my back and yeah,
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: in my back, and I developed a terrible back injury.
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: I couldn't walk, I can move my net forward or back.
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: In the school at that time, because I was on
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: a splarship that if you didn't, if you don't heal um,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: you're gonna lose your scholarship. And all I wanted to
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: do at that time was dance, and so I dedicated
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: that summer um six weeks to coming into the studio
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: and my job was to hear my body, deconstruct movement,
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: strengthen it, make it more flexible so that I can
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: be exactly what I needed to be to gain my
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: sponsorships that but also to be the best dancer I
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: could be. Got a sad effect of that was I transfer.
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: I mean, I came out and I was my absolute
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: writ My body was rich and that the core right
- 1:54:01Speaker 1: got the core right. Huh, That care was I mean,
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: it was intense. And so those principles are what I
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: moved over into the day talents. Not that anybody's doing
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: a dance, but the principles of how a deconstructive movement,
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: how we have a very serious attention to form and
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: engaging the right muscles and a very detailed assessment of
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: how we used the body is what I took that
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: velocity and transferred it into weight training, resistance training that
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: anybody can do and that's how we came about with
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: the twenty Day Challenged physical format, and then we have
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: different meal plans that meet different people's needs. Um. So
- 1:54:42Speaker 1: that's that's the story of how you know DA Times resformed.
- 1:54:45Speaker 1: It was probably the scared, one of the scariest times
- 1:54:48Speaker 1: in my life that you know that times you're mess
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: into a message. So, um, that's what we're using now.
- 1:54:54Speaker 1: But you know, the thing about it is there sometimes
- 1:54:57Speaker 1: the best moments happened when you walk through fear and
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: like I said, fear and scary, being being afraid, in
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: overcoming that and not being not being pushed back because
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: like you said, you were challenged by the fact physically
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: if you don't if you don't get it, get yourself
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: physically right, you could lose your scholarship. Out of that
- 1:55:13Speaker 1: result became what what we can we won't say. We
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: can use the word your perfect body, your core is right,
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: you were tight and then lead you to this whole,
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: this whole system that you have now which is the
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: basis of your brand. Yeah, that's exactly it. Wow, that's
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: exactly it. So we're not so so when you talk
- 1:55:33Speaker 1: about all these different formats, you know, because I'm talking
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: about the twenty eight day workout program, then what is
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: the resource solution? Is that still part of the challenge? Yes,
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: So the twenty resolutions is a little bit about what
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: I described earlier, setting your intentions for the year. Right.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: So instead of just resolutions, right, we want to you
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: have resolutions who want to build a little deeper. We
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: set your buddy, refocus your mind and refresh your soul. Right,
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: And so would that you get all of the physical
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: part of the twenty challenge that I just described, but
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: you get the guided meditations that will focus your heart,
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: your spirit, your mind, as well as the affirmations and wellness.
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: It's we're all about changing the perspective of how people
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: see their bodies. You know, you hear the phrase, uh,
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: your body is your temple, right, And yes, we we
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: have been. We've got proven track record of changing bodies
- 1:56:31Speaker 1: really quickly. But the interesting thing about that phraise is
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: that when you think of a temple, um, it's beautiful
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: on the outside and and it's it's all nate, But
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: the temple is not a temple without the worship and
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: the self discovery that goes on inside that time. Right.
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: And so what we're focused on is helping you access
- 1:56:53Speaker 1: the best qualities of yourself, the self discovery that's going
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: to lead you to greatness, all of your the wrong
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: given gifts, focusing on that and letting that be the
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: reason why you work on the outside of your temple right,
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: because we want the outside to reflect all of the beauty,
- 1:57:11Speaker 1: the glory and the ability ability that's inside. And so
- 1:57:15Speaker 1: I think once we take away um, you want to
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: help people focus inwards because for us, it's not just
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: about working out, it's about working in and once we
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: help people focus inwards, typically they feel better about themselves
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: than motivation is rights and they're able to get great results,
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: but not just get great results, but to live a
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: lifestyle of healthy living. This is really great. U. Let's
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: let's go back today because I want to make sure
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: that people take advantage of what you want to have
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: you on the show, in studio and live stream events
- 1:57:48Speaker 1: because you know, Peloton they really a lockdown that market
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: in the sense you know, when you pelling on the bike,
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: you can participate with somebody new, you are called another
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: part of the world. Is really gets people enthusiastic about
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: this just riding by themselves, they're actually competing and being
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: motivated by other people than they have this new uh
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: thing called the mirror. Well, you know you can be
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: in front of the mirror and working out with somebody simultaneously.
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: Because I think, so I want to make sure that
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: this is something you're saying you're doing right now in studio,
- 1:58:16Speaker 1: out of your New York studio. There's on Mulberry Street
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: these livestream and in studio events. Correct talk about that
- 1:58:22Speaker 1: more detail, because I wanted people to understand that they
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: can go there and be engaged physically. Our online they
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: can be engaged as well for sure. So what we
- 1:58:32Speaker 1: do is we work for the many different influences and
- 1:58:37Speaker 1: any of this influenced people, people who have connected in
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: some way to the mind, body, soul connection, and we
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: have events in our studio where they share their stories,
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: they share their high as they say their loads, and
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: we really get to the bottom of what motivates them
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: to stay well and healthy. I mean largely in those
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: events as well as the workout. So we do different
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: We do different kind of events for active workouts. It's
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: just really fun um different ways for people to explore
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: their body as well as do the actual workout. And
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: so if you sign up or if you go to
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: my Instagram Robbert Brace and you hit the link in
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: the bio and your part of UM and we send
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: you twenty eight days of the workouts and the meditations.
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: You will all also get notified of when we're having
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: these events, so you can show up to the studio
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: or you can live stream them and get this so
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: much wisdom out there, you know, I think if we
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: connect with other people who who are on their own
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: wellness of mind, body sold journey and learned from their wisdom,
- 1:59:36Speaker 1: it elevates all of us. And so they can connect
- 1:59:39Speaker 1: to that from just signing up through the website there
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: or just checking my Instagram. Because we're always a managing
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: the same thing right right always My show is money
- 1:59:48Speaker 1: making Conversation. I always like for my guests to provide
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: some information or some tidbit or some opportunity to show
- 1:59:55Speaker 1: that you know, we always see the end results, but
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: they're always there's always a journey to get to the end,
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: because when you get to the end, you're still moving
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: forward now. And people approached me about starting their business
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: businesses type like this, what what advice would you give them?
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: And to move forward with a business plan to make
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: sure that these these things are in place, I must
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: think first and foremost. Um, well, I guess it's a
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: two different things you're you're asking about. You know, what
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: we should think about when starting a business or when
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: starting a business business, which is understanding the principles of
- 2:00:29Speaker 1: starting this type of business or some of the challenges
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: you went through, Like you said, you went with some
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: previous partners and now you're by yourself, so you know,
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: those are different conversations. Yeah, I think that you have
- 2:00:42Speaker 1: to trust your talents and your interests, and that sounds
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: very basic, But what I mean is this. I came,
- 2:00:51Speaker 1: I came out of the ministry, and I came back
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: to did a bunch of different things that came back
- 2:00:56Speaker 1: to training. I was training for other people. I had
- 2:00:59Speaker 1: my own clients, and I would bounce around the city
- 2:01:02Speaker 1: training pending people in different locations. And you know, I
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: used to have the mindset of, man, you've done too
- 2:01:11Speaker 1: many things. You're a dancer and when you were a minister,
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: and I tried this entrepreneurial thing that didn't work out,
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: and you know, I was going through a period in
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: my life I was like, what are you doing all
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: these different things? How do they fit together. And the
- 2:01:24Speaker 1: more that people people started to connect with me. UM
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: for the different stages of my journey. People started to
- 2:01:31Speaker 1: connect with me because they were attracted to the ballet background.
- 2:01:35Speaker 1: Other people started to connect with me because, oh there's
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: somebody who wants to stands the spiritual background. And then
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: entrepreneurs started connecting with me because you know, I'd had
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: a business and even though it didn't work out the
- 2:01:49Speaker 1: first one, UM, I understood their struggle. And so then
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: as I progressed, I started to see I just needed
- 2:01:57Speaker 1: to be me. One of the things that I've been through,
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: UM on what makes me and what makes my brand?
- 2:02:04Speaker 1: And you know the needs that I see, I see
- 2:02:07Speaker 1: the need UM for all people. I don't want to
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: say our gens just for black women. We train everybody. UM.
- 2:02:14Speaker 1: And but you know the specific journey I've had. I
- 2:02:17Speaker 1: was raised by a single, single mother and UM, you
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: know she fought to give me the very best she
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: and she was an immigrant from Africas and moved to England.
- 2:02:29Speaker 1: She had dyslexias, so she was written off. She um
- 2:02:33Speaker 1: started to make dresses for a living. She only made
- 2:02:35Speaker 1: fifty cents address and that salary. She decided to put
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: me through private school. And you know, I saw her
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: work so much and not have the time to work
- 2:02:46Speaker 1: on her own wellness until much later in life. And
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: so even that experience of seeing my mother now enjoying
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: wellness and then a few times she she stopped to
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: play with us outside, how how much joy you had?
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: You know, all of those things in my life and
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: are real to me. And so that is what I
- 2:03:07Speaker 1: used as the basic inspiration for my business. Now beyond that, um,
- 2:03:12Speaker 1: then you just have to learn. It's just because you
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: have the inspiration and you have a certain talent. What
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: I learned very quickly is you need to learn essential
- 2:03:20Speaker 1: business principles. And I spent money on insultants. I spend
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: money on courses. I spent money on books to try
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: and learn from the best people. And sometimes you know,
- 2:03:32Speaker 1: you're spending this money and you said, you know, I'm
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: not seeing an immediate you know, r O, I, I'm
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: not seeing an immediate return on my investment. But over
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: the years, you know, those things come together, and it's
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: about having the discipline to put the basic business principles
- 2:03:49Speaker 1: into practice and watch your business grow from this. Because
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: you know, one thing, I'm a fund believer in is
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: just because you have a talent and an experience does
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: not necessarily make you entrepreneur. Make sure an entrepreneur is
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: learning those business principles that you put into practice, um,
- 2:04:06Speaker 1: you know, in the beginning, middle and end of your
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: journey exactly. So so that's some I guess that's in
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: my philosophy on that that's that's an awesome philosophy. And
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: that's all I needed to hear and as all my
- 2:04:17Speaker 1: listeners needed to hear, because you are success. I'm talking
