- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfle Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome everyone to Connecting the Dots
- 0:17from Snarfle Solutions Group. I'm Alex. And I'm
- 0:20Morgan. Great to be here with you all. It is
- 0:22Thursday, September 11th, 2025, and just a gorgeous
- 0:26day here in Sacramento. We're looking at sunshine
- 0:29high of 82 degrees. Really nice. Absolutely perfect,
- 0:32though not quite so calm everywhere else. If
- 0:35you're listening in South Florida, just a heads
- 0:37up, continued heavy rain, maybe some localized
- 0:40flooding through Saturday. Oh, wow. Yeah. And
- 0:43a different story out west, eastern Montana into
- 0:45western North Dakota, looking at potentially
- 0:47strong, even severe furniture storms today. So
- 0:50hail, damaging winds, the whole package potentially.
- 0:53Keep an eye out. Definitely stay safe out there.
- 0:55Quite the mix across the country. Alright, before
- 0:57we dive into the tech headlines, let's do a quick
- 0:59market check. Dow Jones closed yesterday at 45
- 1:02,970 .16. That's up 393 points, about 0 .86%.
- 1:08Pretty solid day. Yeah, and the week's looking
- 1:10good too, up 1 .19 % since Monday. S &P 500 also
- 1:14gained, closed at 6 ,566 .78. That's up, well,
- 1:18just over 12 points, 0 .19 % for the day and
- 1:201 .06 % for the week. Okay, and Bitcoin? Bitcoin.
- 1:24Closed at 113 ,998 .1 dealer. Barely moved on
- 1:29the day, up just 0 .03%. But looking decent for
- 1:32the week, up 1 .71 % since Monday. Right, so
- 1:36some steady gains there over the week. Interesting.
- 1:38Definitely. No, switching gears slightly. For
- 1:41my fellow Giants fans, tough result yesterday.
- 1:44Oh no, don't tell me. Yeah, Giants lost to the
- 1:46Diamondbacks 3 -5. Eduardo Rodriguez was tough
- 1:50for them, got the win. Bright spot though, Casey
- 1:53Schmidt went 2 -4. Okay, well, something positive
- 1:56at least. True, true. Gotta find the silver linings,
- 1:58right? There's always the next game. Always.
- 2:00That's the spirit. Exactly. Okay, so that's our
- 2:03quick check -in. Today we're really gonna connect
- 2:05some interesting dots how tech is impacting travel,
- 2:07maybe sports in a way you didn't expect, and
- 2:09even your own finances. We've got three big stories
- 2:12from our Morningstar report, ready to jump in.
- 2:14Let's do it. First up, get this, Apple's new
- 2:18live translation feature for AirPods. You know,
- 2:20the one everyone's talking about. Yeah, sounds
- 2:22amazing. Well, it's hitting a major roadblock
- 2:25in the European Union. Like, millions of people
- 2:27there might not actually get to use it. Wow,
- 2:29okay. That's a big deal right off the bat. So,
- 2:32remind us, what exactly is this feature? So it's
- 2:34for the newer AirPods Pro 3, Pro 2, AirPods 4,
- 2:38and it's meant to be hands -free, real -time
- 2:41translation when you're talking to someone face
- 2:43-to -face. Right, so you just talk normally?
- 2:45And it translates. Pretty much. And if the other
- 2:47person doesn't have AirPods, your iPhone can
- 2:49show them a live transcript. If you both have
- 2:52compatible AirPods, the active noise cancellation
- 2:54apparently helps you focus just on the translation.
- 2:57Sounds pretty seamless. It really does sound
- 2:59like something out of sci -fi. What's needed
- 3:01to make it work tech -wise? Okay, so you need
- 3:03the air pods obviously with the latest firmware
- 3:05But the key is an iPhone 15 Pro or newer one
- 3:09that supports Apple intelligence Apple's on -device
- 3:13AI stuff exactly and it needs iOS 26 which We're
- 3:18expecting around September 15th a lot of the
- 3:20processing happens right on the phone, which
- 3:22is good for speed and you know privacy makes
- 3:24sense What languages are we talking initially
- 3:27starts with English UK US French? German Portuguese
- 3:31from Brazil and Spanish then later Italian Japanese
- 3:35Korean and Chinese. Okay decent start so The
- 3:39EU restriction. What's the specific catch? It's
- 3:41kind of specific. Yeah, the feature is blocked
- 3:44if two things are true one You are physically
- 3:46in an EU country to your Apple account region
- 3:49is set to an EU country both have to apply hmm
- 3:52So it's not just about being the EU. It's about
- 3:55being from the EU essentially, based on your
- 3:58account. Seems like it. Apple hasn't officially
- 4:01said why, but everyone's pointing towards the
- 4:03EU's AI Act and, of course, GDPR. Right, the
- 4:06big data privacy regulation. Makes sense they'd
- 4:09want to look closely at something processing
- 4:11live conversations. Yeah. Consent, data handling.
- 4:14Yeah, regulators probably want a deep dive, and
- 4:17Apple likely wants to be absolutely sure they're
- 4:19compliant before flipping the switch there. Which
- 4:21leads to some odd situations for users, I imagine.
- 4:24Yeah, totally bizarre. Like, think about this.
- 4:26An American tourist in Spain can use it, fine,
- 4:29but a German citizen living and working in France
- 4:31can't. Or, a German visiting the UK can use it
- 4:36there, but a Spanish person visiting Germany
- 4:39can't use it, it's... It feels fragmented. Yeah,
- 4:42that really highlights the whole digital borders
- 4:44issue. A feature meant to connect people globally
- 4:47hits these regional regulatory walls. And it
- 4:50really makes you wonder, you know, is this the
- 4:52future tech that works differently depending
- 4:55on where you are? It's a huge question for travelers
- 4:58for international business. I mean, imagine being
- 5:00an EU resident who speaks, say, German and you
- 5:03want this feature to talk to Spanish colleagues,
- 5:06but you just. can't, even though the languages
- 5:08are supported. It's definitely a clash between
- 5:10tech ambition and regulatory caution. And like
- 5:13some people were saying, this might even be Apple
- 5:15sort of subtly pushing back a warning shot, maybe
- 5:19like, see overregulate and your citizens miss
- 5:22out. But that's interesting theory. Whatever
- 5:23the reason is a complex headache for Apple and
- 5:26potentially frustrating for a lot of users in
- 5:28the EU. Definitely something to watch. Absolutely.
- 5:30OK, let's shift gears from regulatory hurdles
- 5:33to a tech giant absolutely crushing it with AI,
- 5:38plus a really unexpected side story involving
- 5:41its famous founder, story in World 2, Oracle.
- 5:44And Larry Ellison. Yeah, Oracle. You know, sometimes
- 5:48seen as maybe an older tech giant. But wow, have
- 5:51they ridden this AI wave. Larry Ellison and CEO
- 5:54Safferkats have positioned them incredibly well.
- 5:56They're making serious money from this AI tsunami,
- 5:58is some call. And Ellison himself. His personal
- 6:01wealth is just mind -boggling now, right? Oh,
- 6:03completely. He's now the world's second richest
- 6:05person. worth about $301 billion. $300 billion,
- 6:09wow. Just behind Elon Musk, who's at $372 billion.
- 6:12Correct. Though Musk's number has actually dropped
- 6:14by about $60 billion this year, interestingly.
- 6:17Shows how volatile things can be at that level.
- 6:19And Musk, of course, is pushing Tesla hard as
- 6:21an AI and robotics company now, despite some
- 6:24sales issues and the Cybertruck feedback. Plus
- 6:26SpaceX, XAI, he's everywhere. He certainly is.
- 6:29But back to Ellison, this is where the story
- 6:31gets kind of wild. And honestly, pretty relatable
- 6:34in a strange way. It's not about databases or
- 6:37cloud computing. Okay, I'm intrigued. What is
- 6:40it? College football recruiting. Wait, what?
- 6:42Larry Ellison in college football? Seriously.
- 6:45He, along with his wife Joslyn, who is a huge
- 6:48Michigan alum, apparently very passionate. Okay.
- 6:51And get this, Tom Brady, Mr. 7 Super Bowls himself,
- 6:55and Dave Portnoy from Barstool Sports. This group
- 6:59apparently helped underwrite the biggest recruiting
- 7:01flip in college football history. No way! You're
- 7:04talking about Bryce Underwood! The number one
- 7:06high school player? That's the one. Consensus
- 7:08number one recruit was committed to LSU. This
- 7:11dream team alliance reportedly helped put together
- 7:13a $12 million NIL deal to bring him to Michigan
- 7:17instead. $12 million from an 18 -year -old football
- 7:20player before he's even taken a snap in college.
- 7:23That's insane. It is absolutely staggering. Reports
- 7:26suggest Jocelyn Ellison was really the driving
- 7:27force wanting Michigan back on top. But yeah,
- 7:30$12 million. It just shows the kind of influence
- 7:32this level of wealth can have now reaching far
- 7:35beyond tech into, well, college sports. I mean,
- 7:38this completely changes the game, doesn't it?
- 7:39We talk about NIL deals, but this is a whole
- 7:41other stratosphere. It's like tech titans playing
- 7:44real life fantasy football, but with actual universities
- 7:47and enormous sums of money. It really makes you
- 7:50think about the landscape of college athletics
- 7:52now. What does this mean for fairness for the
- 7:56schools that don't have billionaire boosters
- 7:58lining up? And what about the pressure on a kid
- 8:00like Underwood? Exactly. It's not just a sports
- 8:02story. It's about wealth. power, influence, and
- 8:06how it's reshaping institutions we thought we
- 8:08understood. A $12 million NIL deal funded partly
- 8:12by a tech mogul. Just wow. It's a sign of the
- 8:15times, for sure. Yeah. The NIL era is still unfolding,
- 8:18and this is a major plot twist. Definitely a
- 8:20story that connects tech power to a very different
- 8:22part of everyday life for many people. OK, fascinating
- 8:25stuff. Yeah. All right, for our final story today,
- 8:27we're heading back towards the financial world,
- 8:29but with a definite tech spin. Big news in the
- 8:32digital asset space. Figure Technologies, the
- 8:35blockchain lender, just went public. They had
- 8:38their IPO on NASDAQ. Yes, this is a pretty significant
- 8:40one, Alex. Figure raised $787 .5 million. They
- 8:45sold 31 .5 million shares at $25 a pop. OK. That
- 8:50gives the company a valuation around $5 .3 billion.
- 8:54And you could find them on NASDAQ now, ticker
- 8:56symbol FIGR. F -I -G -R. Got it. And the founder
- 9:00is Mike Cagney, right? The guy who co -founded
- 9:02SoFi. That's him. And apparently he's keeping
- 9:04majority voting power, which is also interesting.
- 9:06Okay, so for listeners maybe still, you know,
- 9:09wrapping their heads around blockchain, what
- 9:11does Figure actually do? Like, what's the real
- 9:14-world application here? Good question. So, Figure
- 9:16uses its own blockchain platform called Provenance
- 9:19for things like lending, trading, and investing.
- 9:21They're big in consumer credit, especially home
- 9:24equity loans, H -E -L -Cs. Okay. Home loans.
- 9:27Exactly. They've actually originated over 16
- 9:28billion dollars in TLCs already. Makes them the
- 9:30biggest non -bank player in that specific space.
- 9:3316 billion. That's substantial. It really is.
- 9:37Cagney's whole idea, his vision, is using blockchain
- 9:40to make typically illiquid assets, like loans,
- 9:43more liquid. By putting them on chain, recording
- 9:46them digitally on the blockchain, the goal is
- 9:49to make trading them, managing them faster, cheaper,
- 9:52more transparent. Left paperwork, fewer middlemen.
- 9:55Okay, that makes sense. Taking something complex
- 9:57like loan trading and trying to streamline it
- 9:59with tech, and financially they're doing okay
- 10:01now. Seems like it. They actually turned up their
- 10:03offer in the first half of this year, $29 million.
- 10:06That's a big swing from the same time last year
- 10:08when they had a $13 million loss. And revenues
- 10:11jumped up over 22 % too, to $191 million. Nice
- 10:14turnaround. Yeah, and this IPO comes at a time
- 10:17when we're seeing other crypto -related companies
- 10:18hitting the public markets too, like Circle,
- 10:21Gemini. There seems to be a more, let's say,
- 10:24crypto -friendly mood right now. So connecting
- 10:27the dots for everyone listening, why does this
- 10:30figure IPO matter? I mean, polls still show a
- 10:33lot of people find crypto confusing or don't
- 10:35really get it. Right. And I think that's where
- 10:36figure is interesting. Unlike maybe some purely
- 10:39speculative crypto coins or abstract projects,
- 10:43figure offers something, well, tangible. They're
- 10:46using blockchain for real -world financial services.
- 10:48Like crypto -backed loans. You mentioned home
- 10:50equity. Exactly. And they're even using AI, like
- 10:53Google Gemini and OpenAI Tech, to help underwrite
- 10:56loans faster, process applications more efficiently,
- 11:00all using blockchain for transparency in the
- 11:02background. It's about practical application.
- 11:04So could this be a sign, maybe a step towards
- 11:07blockchain tech becoming more normal, more integrated
- 11:10into the regular banking and lending systems
- 11:12we all use? That's the big question, isn't it?
- 11:15It's this focus on practical use cases, on making
- 11:18existing financial processes better, the key
- 11:20to bridging that gap between the crypto world
- 11:22and mainstream finance. It certainly feels like
- 11:25a move in that direction. Maybe this kind of
- 11:27tangible benefit is what finally helps more people
- 11:29see the potential beyond just, you know, Bitcoin's
- 11:33price swings. Could be. It definitely signals
- 11:35the technology is maturing, moving beyond just
- 11:38hype and towards actual utility in industries
- 11:41like finance. It's a space to watch. Absolutely.
- 11:44So quite a range today. Yeah. And that's our
- 11:46look at today's top tech stories on connecting
- 11:48the dots. We covered Apple's live translation
- 11:51feature hitting those EU regulatory hurdles.
- 11:54Oracle's big AI success story and Larry Ellison's
- 11:58surprising detour into college football funding.
- 12:01And finally, figure technologies bringing blockchain
- 12:04lending to the public markets with its Nasdaq
- 12:06IPO. And each story, you know, really connects
- 12:09back to how tech is changing things for you,
- 12:11how you might communicate internationally, the
- 12:13surprising influence of big tech money, and maybe
- 12:16even how you'll get a loan in the future. We're
