- 0:25Speaker 1: from my man, Rashan McDonald money making conversations. Here we come. Ah, Yes,
- 0:31Speaker 1: money making conversation. The brand that grows, the brand that tails.
- 0:35Speaker 1: All this is money make. You know, it's a difference
- 0:38Speaker 1: in my voice. There's a difference in my voice. There's
- 0:41Speaker 1: a proud, a proud flavor, a robust version of my
- 0:44Speaker 1: voice because I have the power twins on my show today.
- 0:48Speaker 1: That means you have to give extra You just can't
- 0:50Speaker 1: talk normal. You have to talk about because they're here
- 0:53Speaker 1: to talk about things that I talk about on a
- 0:54Speaker 1: daily basis on this show that I promote on a
- 0:57Speaker 1: daily basis. Success, believing in yourself, having relationships, look at
- 1:02Speaker 1: yourself in that mirror and say you can do it.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Not just say it, but believe in it. Walk through
- 1:08Speaker 1: the people who say you can't do it. Surround yourself
- 1:11Speaker 1: with relationships, respect your family. That's what they do. The
- 1:15Speaker 1: Power Twins. Now, one was born five minutes apart from
- 1:19Speaker 1: the other, but they are still twins because that's what
- 1:21Speaker 1: twins do. That's what they Dell One will always tell
- 1:27Speaker 1: the other I am the oldest because that's what twins do.
- 1:31Speaker 1: As I said earlier, my next guests are Twins. Hustlers, Media, mazings, Balls, Ladies,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and as All Magazine called them, Power Twins. One is
- 1:41Speaker 1: an entrepreneur, innovative marketer, and revenue producing executive who has
- 1:46Speaker 1: spent the last two decades at the intersection of marketing, branding, tech, media,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and entertainment. Her sister is a two time Emmy Award
- 1:55Speaker 1: winning television producer as am I a two time Emmy
- 1:58Speaker 1: Award winning television US. But what I am not is
- 2:02Speaker 1: the VP of Branded Entertainment and Media Innovation at CBS
- 2:05Speaker 1: Television Network. That is her. They're on the show to
- 2:08Speaker 1: day to talk about their new book, which I've read
- 2:10Speaker 1: so fast. The very first time I went back and
- 2:13Speaker 1: read it twice. It's called Double Down Media, Maven's Bostil
- 2:17Speaker 1: Ladies Power Twins. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations Trisha
- 2:22Speaker 1: and Antoinette Clark with in Need. Welcome Ladies, hid We
- 2:28Speaker 1: love your energy already. Come on. You gotta make it happen.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You got to make it happen. The beauty of this
- 2:35Speaker 1: book is that, first of all, I have a twenty
- 2:37Speaker 1: two year daughter. She's in college. That I can't say
- 2:40Speaker 1: that because you know what, she's in college. My wife
- 2:42Speaker 1: will kill me. What did you say that? Now? Neither
- 2:46Speaker 1: gonna find what your daughter is going to go and
- 2:48Speaker 1: they bother her. But but this book I gotta lettle
- 2:52Speaker 1: read because it's it felt so um so because you
- 2:56Speaker 1: because I'm hearing about two success stories in one book
- 3:00Speaker 1: and how differently they were achieved and they will achieve
- 3:05Speaker 1: because of the I like to say that the ladies
- 3:08Speaker 1: in your life were mentors, and not only from the
- 3:12Speaker 1: standpoint if they were relatives, but they were mentoring you
- 3:15Speaker 1: and sometimes they didn't always say to you what you
- 3:17Speaker 1: wanted to hear. Correct, Yeah, absolutely, um And to your point,
- 3:23Speaker 1: you know, for your saying that you want your daughter
- 3:25Speaker 1: to read this book, that's why we wrote this book.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It was to democratize success for people that look like us.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And for so long we've been looked at as anomalies
- 3:35Speaker 1: as we continue to kind of rise up in our career,
- 3:38Speaker 1: and we were like, wait a minute, we should be
- 3:41Speaker 1: the norm. People of color should be the norm. It
- 3:43Speaker 1: shouldn't be well, how did they do it? It should
- 3:46Speaker 1: be like, how can we all do it? And we
- 3:48Speaker 1: think double down. At least that's the groundwork for us
- 3:51Speaker 1: to be able to scale kind of the mentorship that
- 3:53Speaker 1: we have been giving to two um young girls, young
- 3:57Speaker 1: men for the past few years. And and yes we
- 4:00Speaker 1: didn't always hear amazing things from from our family. We
- 4:04Speaker 1: called them our tribe, kind of the matriarchy, but they
- 4:07Speaker 1: definitely instilled a level of passion and determination to succeed.
- 4:12Speaker 1: We think a lot of that came from their immigrant mentality.
- 4:16Speaker 1: They came here, you know, from they came to the
- 4:18Speaker 1: States from Jamaica, and they wanted to achieve the American dream.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And their version of the American dream was exactly what
- 4:27Speaker 1: the status quo tells us, and that you have to
- 4:30Speaker 1: be a doctor, a lawyer, or an engineer to kind
- 4:33Speaker 1: of make it. So that's the that's the vision and
- 4:37Speaker 1: the directive they gave to us. And we said, hold
- 4:39Speaker 1: on a minute, we don't want to be those things,
- 4:42Speaker 1: but we think we can still achieve a love a
- 4:44Speaker 1: love love success but doing it our way. And right
- 4:48Speaker 1: after college, we tricked them. We told them that we
- 4:51Speaker 1: would go to grad school after working for two years.
- 4:54Speaker 1: All they have to do is give us two years
- 4:55Speaker 1: to work, get to get some experience, then we would
- 4:58Speaker 1: go to grad school. So Anthon and I I took
- 5:00Speaker 1: it upon ourselves that within those two years, we have
- 5:03Speaker 1: to figure out a game plan of what success could
- 5:06Speaker 1: look like and what our north star is and what
- 5:08Speaker 1: the plan should be to help get us to, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the levels that we wanted to achieve. And we were
- 5:14Speaker 1: able to at least lay the road map out within
- 5:16Speaker 1: those two years, so that Makeriarchy kind of gave us
- 5:20Speaker 1: some room to breathe and um, do it our way. Wonderful. Now,
- 5:26Speaker 1: the book we're talking about is called Double Down, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: it's reading. The book is divided into two parts. Part one,
- 5:33Speaker 1: you're focusing on how to double down on yourself, which
- 5:36Speaker 1: is very important. I like this because they're talking about
- 5:38Speaker 1: getting yourself right before we get to part two, You
- 5:41Speaker 1: really have to look in yourself because a lot of
- 5:42Speaker 1: people always dream I want to do this, uh, and
- 5:46Speaker 1: then they make up situations which stopped them from wanting
- 5:49Speaker 1: to do this that they keep talking about every time.
- 5:52Speaker 1: And let's talk about focusing on the loan game, always
- 5:55Speaker 1: keeping your eyes on the horizon or the prize while
- 5:58Speaker 1: moving forward with purpose and a and of action. That's
- 6:00Speaker 1: what I talked about all of all the time on
- 6:02Speaker 1: this show. What is your plan? You got a dream,
- 6:05Speaker 1: you set a goal, what is the plan? And then
- 6:07Speaker 1: part two helps you look outside of yourself that is
- 6:10Speaker 1: where you your crew looks like. It really interesting because
- 6:13Speaker 1: because uh, I talked about this when I was managing
- 6:16Speaker 1: Steve Harvey, and then when I stopped managing, I was
- 6:18Speaker 1: just by myself, and so I was just trying to
- 6:20Speaker 1: do a lot of things by myself. And then I
- 6:22Speaker 1: had to take I have to take a step back,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and I realized I had a crew. When I was
- 6:27Speaker 1: managing Steve Harvey. I had people around me that I
- 6:29Speaker 1: could can you help me with this? And they wanted
- 6:31Speaker 1: to help me with And I like what you talked about.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You have to have ride or die people in your
- 6:35Speaker 1: crew that's what I forgot and that's what you're talking
- 6:39Speaker 1: about in the book. Correct, Oh yeah, like, and we
- 6:42Speaker 1: break it down you have to it has to come
- 6:44Speaker 1: from within and you have to build your tribe from
- 6:48Speaker 1: the inside out. What I love about your book is
- 6:51Speaker 1: that you preach confidence. You preach the fact that don't
- 6:55Speaker 1: don't don't assume that you shouldn't be there, that you
- 6:58Speaker 1: shouldn't have the you have the right to say that
- 7:01Speaker 1: this is mine, go forward. And so I say that
- 7:04Speaker 1: because when I think back over my life, I think
- 7:06Speaker 1: about all the success I had, especially when I kids
- 7:09Speaker 1: went into college. Is in college allowed me to grow
- 7:12Speaker 1: as a human being. That's why I always tell everybody
- 7:14Speaker 1: go to college. Just go to college and allow college
- 7:17Speaker 1: to to allow you to grow. Because when you're in
- 7:20Speaker 1: high school, high school just dictates to you go to class,
- 7:23Speaker 1: go to class, you go. You know if you if
- 7:25Speaker 1: you do good or bad, guess what you can get
- 7:27Speaker 1: through high school college. You do bad, I think got
- 7:30Speaker 1: something for you, go home. Okay. So that means that
- 7:33Speaker 1: you have to develop a competitiveness while you in college.
- 7:36Speaker 1: And that's what that's why college is such a beautiful thing.
- 7:39Speaker 1: When I read about in your book, because that's when
- 7:42Speaker 1: the competitive wheels of life really started for you too,
- 7:46Speaker 1: and that's what plays out in this book. Correct. Yeah,
- 7:50Speaker 1: And I think it started in college. That's I think
- 7:52Speaker 1: what we were able to expand it even more opportunities, right,
- 7:57Speaker 1: But I think it started when we were in high
- 7:59Speaker 1: school when we decided to sell guest slectshirts, Like there
- 8:02Speaker 1: was a store in Manhattan that had them price, so
- 8:07Speaker 1: we pulled all of our money together and bought about
- 8:10Speaker 1: thirty something sleat shirts. We started rocking them any chance
- 8:14Speaker 1: we could at school and then um kids would be
- 8:18Speaker 1: our clocksments were like where'd you get those? And then
- 8:20Speaker 1: we would have them at our backpacks and sell it
- 8:22Speaker 1: to them. So I think it's always been a part
- 8:25Speaker 1: of our d n A. And then we just flex
- 8:27Speaker 1: those muscles in different ways based on the white space
- 8:30Speaker 1: that we're able to find. Right. And that's important to
- 8:32Speaker 1: say that. And I stand corrected, because college allowed you
- 8:37Speaker 1: to expand on your entrepreneurship that you created high school,
- 8:40Speaker 1: because in high school I was setting blow pops. In
- 8:43Speaker 1: high school, I was I was selling blowpops. Go downstore,
- 8:46Speaker 1: get blow pops, and I go to school, Hey, blow
- 8:48Speaker 1: pops ain't just walking around the hallway region had them, okay,
- 8:51Speaker 1: And then I was a photographer in school, so I
- 8:54Speaker 1: would take I would take a couple of photos, a
- 8:56Speaker 1: couple of photos, five hours take photos. You know, I
- 8:59Speaker 1: had equipment access, had my little photo room. By going
- 9:02Speaker 1: in black and white, I do that. So I started
- 9:05Speaker 1: that in high school. And so when they got to college,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you know, it was like a bigger arena for me
- 9:11Speaker 1: to just expand on. I can see I can get
- 9:13Speaker 1: five dollars from people, I can get ten dollars from people.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I started being able to convince people to go a
- 9:19Speaker 1: group of people to go from this place to this
- 9:21Speaker 1: place that right there. See, I wish I had a
- 9:25Speaker 1: double down with me. She she had. She she had
- 9:28Speaker 1: a double down with her a twin. See if I
- 9:30Speaker 1: had Rushan McDonald had a twin, Oh boy, because she
- 9:33Speaker 1: can because whenever it's a rap, it's because see whenever
- 9:38Speaker 1: she questioned herself, the other twins or the girl, let's
- 9:40Speaker 1: go forward, really, yes, let's go, let's throw this party,
- 9:45Speaker 1: let's go to the school. You can do this. So
- 9:47Speaker 1: whenever a little doubt drops in, and that's something to
- 9:50Speaker 1: just tell you something is that everybody needs to get
- 9:53Speaker 1: them a twin, Okay, a person who's a ride or
- 9:57Speaker 1: that a person who you can throw back information to
- 9:59Speaker 1: him and they give it back to you as real
- 10:02Speaker 1: as possible. That's what I took away from this book
- 10:04Speaker 1: is that you to be successful, you got to have
- 10:07Speaker 1: a partner in some degree, whether there's a love interest,
- 10:11Speaker 1: whether it's a best friend, somebody that you can roll with.
- 10:15Speaker 1: They were born together, five minutes depart and they become
- 10:18Speaker 1: business partner's best friend. That was my takeaway friend book.
- 10:22Speaker 1: That I missed that in this book when I was reading,
- 10:23Speaker 1: because that's what I took away. I need to give
- 10:25Speaker 1: me a Roshan McDonald twin. That's yeah, and that's a
- 10:29Speaker 1: big part of it. It's showing how you can use
- 10:33Speaker 1: take lessons of what we've been able to develop because
- 10:36Speaker 1: we're twins, and how you can apply that in your
- 10:38Speaker 1: friendships with colleagues and with the rest of your tribes.
- 10:42Speaker 1: The tribes cool. So the positions that you guys achieved, now,
- 10:47Speaker 1: what's what's the future. You write a book, you know
- 10:49Speaker 1: you're receiving compliments about your skill, about your skills. It's
- 10:53Speaker 1: not about your looks, it's about your skills. I think
- 10:55Speaker 1: that's very important. I think it's very that's what you
- 10:57Speaker 1: two wanted to achieve. You when people recognize you for
- 11:00Speaker 1: talents and you want to share your talents to the
- 11:02Speaker 1: young ladies, to let them know that they can be great,
- 11:05Speaker 1: because so many times it is not men but thrown
- 11:09Speaker 1: to women how they look and how they can be
- 11:11Speaker 1: as successful based on their looks. And I see that
- 11:13Speaker 1: coming clear through the book. Through the pages of this
- 11:16Speaker 1: book as well, it's about what you can do and
- 11:18Speaker 1: don't let anybody's status quo is another one of those things.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Don't let people deny your success because they said you
- 11:25Speaker 1: got there based on your looks. That brings in these
- 11:27Speaker 1: pages as well. Correctly, Oh, it's about what you bring
- 11:32Speaker 1: to the table because and we're all about achievement versus activity. Right,
- 11:36Speaker 1: So people can spend their wheels and and try to
- 11:40Speaker 1: you know, have these small winds and get you know,
- 11:44Speaker 1: blocked down by failures. But we're always going to have
- 11:47Speaker 1: our eye on the long game because we know that
- 11:51Speaker 1: we want to make an impact and you want to
- 11:54Speaker 1: want to be libary not temporary. Okay, both say that's
- 11:58Speaker 1: the first time they talked to another, now can right
- 12:00Speaker 1: you see I was rolling. I was rolling with everybody
- 12:03Speaker 1: going who tuning this tuck and then they're gonna talk together.
- 12:05Speaker 1: The magic is it's such a beautiful thing. I would
- 12:11Speaker 1: be before we get off, I want to tell everybody
- 12:13Speaker 1: how they can get the book or by the book,
- 12:15Speaker 1: make sure we get that out there. Plus I want
- 12:16Speaker 1: banners so I can put it on my social media.
- 12:19Speaker 1: So I on my side because like I said, I'm
- 12:21Speaker 1: recommending this book, I'm gonna show you how I'm gonna recommend.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna put it in my on my verified social
- 12:27Speaker 1: media handles. Okay, but tell everybody how they can get
- 12:29Speaker 1: the book. Thank you. So the book drops yes September
- 12:35Speaker 1: tent and it's available everywhere books are sold, Amazon, Barnes,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and Noble, you name it. And you couldn't even go
- 12:41Speaker 1: to your local bookstore. And if we're not on the shelf,
- 12:44Speaker 1: you should ask them why we're not on the shelf.
- 12:46Speaker 1: So definitely surch for our book, but it should be everywhere.
- 12:51Speaker 1: And if you just want to learn a little bit
- 12:52Speaker 1: more about us, you can check out our website double
- 12:55Speaker 1: down book dot com um that has our social handles
- 12:58Speaker 1: and then also links to Bears retailers where you can
- 13:01Speaker 1: get it. My friends. This has been wonderful. This has
- 13:05Speaker 1: been I gotta go back into that voice. This has
- 13:06Speaker 1: been amazing. I've had the Clark's Sisters. I've had the
- 13:09Speaker 1: Pointer Sisters. I've had the Clark's Sisters the Gospels. Now
- 13:13Speaker 1: I've had the Twins, the Power Twins. They're the stars
- 13:17Speaker 1: of the book, the writers of the book double down,
- 13:19Speaker 1: better on yourself and succeed on your terms. They're just
- 13:23Speaker 1: a younger version of Rushan McDonald. Unfortunately there's only one
- 13:25Speaker 1: Rich McDonald, but there are two of them. I love it,
- 13:30Speaker 1: y'all come back on my show. Okay, we'll be right
- 13:32Speaker 1: back with more from McDonald The Money Making Conversations. Hi,
- 13:36Speaker 1: this is Rushan McDonald, the host of Money Making Conversations.
- 13:39Speaker 1: You say to yourself, who calls Rushan shell, please walk
- 13:43Speaker 1: on the Money Making Conversations. La La Anthony. We met
- 13:46Speaker 1: you know used always Roch can you give you always
- 13:52Speaker 1: talk to you about everything, everything and looking at you
- 13:55Speaker 1: and Steve Harvey. You know that motivated me too because
- 13:58Speaker 1: I would see all the amazing things guys are doing.
- 14:00Speaker 1: It not just being on the radio at that time,
- 14:04Speaker 1: and even now, you know people want to put people
- 14:07Speaker 1: in boxes. Please Welcome to Money Making Conversations. The incredible
- 14:11Speaker 1: Nick Cannon truly one of them, our mentors and one
- 14:13Speaker 1: of the people that showed me that you can be multifascinating.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You know for a fact now that you're about to
- 14:18Speaker 1: capture and the audience that's going to have a spending
- 14:21Speaker 1: power for at least another twenty years, three years. Like
- 14:24Speaker 1: my happiness, money doesn't make you happy. To happy makes
- 14:27Speaker 1: your money. Money Making Conversations continues online at www dot
- 14:32Speaker 1: money Making Conversations dot com. Welcome to Money Making Conversation.
- 14:40Speaker 1: I'm your host, Rashwan McDonald. Here's the truth about reaching
- 14:43Speaker 1: your goals. Success is not easy. If it were, then
- 14:46Speaker 1: everybody will be wealthy and partying in Las Vegas. Money
- 14:49Speaker 1: Making Conversation about setting goals and reaching your dreams. If
- 14:51Speaker 1: you don't know something, then you will have to educate yourself.
- 14:54Speaker 1: Become the smartest person in your business or circle, because
- 14:57Speaker 1: if you are not all you are the smartest person
- 15:01Speaker 1: in your circle, there is not long term success. That's
- 15:04Speaker 1: why corned the phrase stan ahead of the ignorance. Ignorance
- 15:07Speaker 1: is a state of being uninformed. You must always be
- 15:10Speaker 1: ready to plan, adjust your goals, and never let change
- 15:13Speaker 1: sneak upon you. When you make these things, then you
- 15:16Speaker 1: will be successful by standing ahead of the ignorance. And
- 15:18Speaker 1: another point, dream killers. They're away from dream killers, and
- 15:22Speaker 1: they sayers, and they can come in different forms. And
- 15:24Speaker 1: a dream killer and they say it can be a parent,
- 15:26Speaker 1: a brother or sister, your best friend, a relative, a stranger,
- 15:30Speaker 1: a trusted church member, a community leader, a teacher, a neighbor, husband, wife, partner, girlfriend,
- 15:35Speaker 1: boar friend, your children. And guess what you might look
- 15:38Speaker 1: in the mirror, and you might be the dream killer.
- 15:40Speaker 1: But when we listen to money making conversation, that's what
- 15:43Speaker 1: I try to stop. That's my goal to stop from
- 15:46Speaker 1: you being the worst enemy for yourself. That's what money
- 15:51Speaker 1: making conversations all about. My next guest, I'm just tell
- 15:53Speaker 1: you all this his resume five times, and I'm tired
- 15:57Speaker 1: because this brother does a lot. My next guest as
- 16:00Speaker 1: an NBA superstar, entrepreneur, philanthropists, inspirational motivator, notable brand ambassador
- 16:07Speaker 1: for State Farm. In two thousand five, Chris and his
- 16:10Speaker 1: family established the CP three Foundation of philanthropic partnership with
- 16:14Speaker 1: the Winston Salem Foundation in honor of his late grandfather,
- 16:17Speaker 1: the foundation's effort are truly a family affair, and with
- 16:21Speaker 1: his tenth anniversary, the foundation officially changed its name to
- 16:24Speaker 1: the Chris Paul Family Foundation to include the involvement of
- 16:27Speaker 1: Chris's wife, parents, brother, sister in law, and extended family members.
- 16:31Speaker 1: He is a man that I am a fan of
- 16:34Speaker 1: because what he stands in life, because he stands up
- 16:37Speaker 1: for himself and the people around him and his community.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making conversations, Chris Paul. What's going on, Chris,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and tell you some I originally from Houston, Texas, Okay,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and so yes, sir, I'm based in Atlanta, but for Houston,
- 16:55Speaker 1: Texas and the Theena impressed me. I was always impressed
- 16:58Speaker 1: with you before we got traded in Houston. That's gonna
- 17:01Speaker 1: be real about this, Okay. If you if your guy
- 17:03Speaker 1: who knows sports and understand sports and know your history
- 17:06Speaker 1: as a as a man, as an individual, as a leader,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you impressed. But as soon as you got to Houston,
- 17:12Speaker 1: you got involved in the community, explained, explain that drive
- 17:16Speaker 1: as soon as so so as soon as it gets there,
- 17:18Speaker 1: I'm gonna TV. He's passing that food. What drives that
- 17:21Speaker 1: direction in your life? So strongly. I think for me,
- 17:24Speaker 1: it's always in my support system and my family. You know,
- 17:27Speaker 1: growing up in North Carolina, you know, everything was always
- 17:30Speaker 1: about like helping others and understanding that you don't get
- 17:33Speaker 1: anywhere on your own. And the day I got traded,
- 17:38Speaker 1: you know, to to Houston, I became of h Houstonia
- 17:44Speaker 1: with the hurt, with the hurricane happening. Um that that
- 17:48Speaker 1: was tough, you know to see you know now part
- 17:51Speaker 1: of my extended family and during what they were having
- 17:54Speaker 1: to go through, I wanted to do as much as
- 17:57Speaker 1: I could, do my part and help as much as possible.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And is not even the fact that I, you know,
- 18:02Speaker 1: got traded to Houston, just just because you know, we
- 18:06Speaker 1: all are people. You know, it's a big family, so
- 18:10Speaker 1: you know, and that's really important because you know, it's
- 18:12Speaker 1: like because I know that, like you said, you're in
- 18:15Speaker 1: us to that, but you're still helping people in other areas.
- 18:17Speaker 1: That's what we're on the call today and talk about
- 18:19Speaker 1: how you just feel a need to shape a better
- 18:22Speaker 1: life for people you don't know, and that's an important
- 18:24Speaker 1: value system for you. Correct. Yeah, I think for me, uh,
- 18:30Speaker 1: I've always looked at basketball as you know, a tool,
- 18:35Speaker 1: like I love the game more than anybody. But I
- 18:37Speaker 1: always say, you know, basketball is what I do, It's
- 18:40Speaker 1: not who I am. You know, if I remember, uh
- 18:43Speaker 1: if i'm if I remember, you know, when I leave
- 18:46Speaker 1: this earth as just this amazing basketball player, then I
- 18:49Speaker 1: feel like, you know, my life was a failure. You know,
- 18:52Speaker 1: there's so many people who have helped me get to
- 18:54Speaker 1: where I am today that you know, it's it's paying
- 18:58Speaker 1: it forward and just trying to teach and your case,
- 19:00Speaker 1: especially the youth. Uh not only my own kids especially them,
- 19:04Speaker 1: but everyone, just trying to teach them. Because I'm study
- 19:07Speaker 1: four and I'm still learning. I tell people that that's,
- 19:10Speaker 1: you know, someone in the same page. I tell people
- 19:12Speaker 1: I wake up ignorant every morning. That way, I'm willing
- 19:15Speaker 1: to accept information that's being delivered to me because you
- 19:17Speaker 1: wake up think you know it all. Then guess what
- 19:19Speaker 1: You're gonna miss some valuable information to a valuable advice.
- 19:23Speaker 1: And that's also a humble side of you that that
- 19:26Speaker 1: I feel you know that that that that rings out
- 19:29Speaker 1: for you because naturally as an athlete, and you're such
- 19:31Speaker 1: a gifted athlete, that's a necessary feeling that you know
- 19:34Speaker 1: you are in some ways immortal. You know, you're invincible
- 19:38Speaker 1: because that craft, you're so good at it. But in
- 19:40Speaker 1: the business world, when you go into the business world
- 19:43Speaker 1: and the charitable world, it's filled with so many flaws
- 19:46Speaker 1: because you know, you get on the court, you see
- 19:47Speaker 1: the length of basketball store, you know the rams ten feet,
- 19:50Speaker 1: you know where the free throw line is gonna be
- 19:51Speaker 1: this far. But when you get in the business world,
- 19:54Speaker 1: those dynamics disappear. That's when it also gets really interesting
- 19:58Speaker 1: and challenging. Correct, Yeah, it gets very interesting because what
- 20:02Speaker 1: happens also is a lot of times people see you
- 20:05Speaker 1: on television or they see you on that court and
- 20:07Speaker 1: they think that's all you know. You know, they think
- 20:10Speaker 1: all you know is how to put the ball in
- 20:11Speaker 1: the basket right, and um, that's that's not the case.
- 20:16Speaker 1: Not only myself, it's a lot of intelligent athletes out there,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and I think that's why, you know, we have to
- 20:22Speaker 1: continue to learn. And it's funny, you know, sometimes when
- 20:26Speaker 1: you do get in the business world and people shake
- 20:28Speaker 1: your hand, they make a comment and they're like, oh,
- 20:30Speaker 1: you know about this, Like, yeah, we we only played
- 20:33Speaker 1: the games from seven. That's so true. It's really interesting
- 20:38Speaker 1: because I and I totally agree with you that because
- 20:42Speaker 1: when I was managing Steve Harvey and whenever we was
- 20:44Speaker 1: doing deals, you know, it was so much energy put
- 20:47Speaker 1: in his direction because he was the start Steve Harber,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I was. I was just doing a deal. And and
- 20:51Speaker 1: and I will tell you, because of mine who I
- 20:54Speaker 1: was in African American, a lot of a lot of
- 20:56Speaker 1: shade was throwing my way like I didn't know what
- 20:58Speaker 1: I was doing, Like I was his running buddy, like
- 21:00Speaker 1: I was his boy. And I would always tell him,
- 21:03Speaker 1: You're gonna talk to me later. I would just tell him,
- 21:05Speaker 1: you're gonna talk to me later. And because because people
- 21:08Speaker 1: will disrespect you by, you know, stereotyping you. And that's
- 21:12Speaker 1: what you're saying. As an athlete, I was being stereotyped
- 21:15Speaker 1: because guess what. And Lebron runs through that same problem
- 21:17Speaker 1: with his boys. Could they call him crew? They disrespect
- 21:20Speaker 1: the fact that you can be of a certain color,
- 21:23Speaker 1: a certain a certain or certain gender and feel that
- 21:26Speaker 1: you can't compete mentally in this corporate game, this game
- 21:29Speaker 1: of closing deals. And that's what you're playing in every day.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Because I look at all these brands and partnerships that
- 21:35Speaker 1: you're tied to. It's amazing that you're so well rounded, Chris,
- 21:40Speaker 1: try to at least and you know, over the years,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I've had some unbelievable mentors who I paid attention to
- 21:46Speaker 1: and like and like you just said, there, Um, it's
- 21:50Speaker 1: never never having too much information. Yes, you know, I
- 21:55Speaker 1: always want to learn, um, And that's what it is.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I mean I talk about a lot of times as
- 22:02Speaker 1: a professional athlete. Uh, I got drafted into the NBA
- 22:05Speaker 1: when I was nineteen, about twenty years old. And you're young.
- 22:10Speaker 1: You don't know about financial literacy. You don't know about
- 22:13Speaker 1: a lot and so if you if you don't try
- 22:17Speaker 1: to seek some of that knowledge, you know, your career
- 22:19Speaker 1: can go by. And now you're just sitting there like
- 22:21Speaker 1: what do I do? Now? See we're just talking about you,
- 22:24Speaker 1: and they're just talking about Rashan McCown. But to accomplish
- 22:27Speaker 1: the task that you're you have a team. Let's talk
- 22:29Speaker 1: about the team that surrounds Chris paul Man. Listen, my
- 22:33Speaker 1: my team is unbelievable and match let's give us some blog.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on,
- 22:39Speaker 1: if you if you show me, if you show me somebody,
- 22:44Speaker 1: Uh that doesn't have an amazing team around him, and
- 22:47Speaker 1: they're lying. And I'll tell you first and foremost that
- 22:50Speaker 1: it's not me, like I'm glad that I can be
- 22:53Speaker 1: the voice and whatnot, but my team, which consists of
- 22:56Speaker 1: a number of number of people. But I mean, I
- 22:59Speaker 1: had to I never started my wife everything. I mean
- 23:03Speaker 1: when my wife since I was eighteen years old, and
- 23:07Speaker 1: she she is absolutely the point guard of the family.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You know, I just play it for my team. Um.
- 23:14Speaker 1: But then I got my my parents. I'm so blessed.
- 23:17Speaker 1: I'm fortunate to have a mom and dad. Uh my
- 23:20Speaker 1: older brother who is my business manager. Also have a
- 23:23Speaker 1: woman named Carmen Wilson who is unbelievable, unbelievable, and it
- 23:29Speaker 1: goes on and on. We're really a family when it
- 23:32Speaker 1: when it comes to our operations, and that's really important
- 23:35Speaker 1: because family. I look back in my life. I tell
- 23:37Speaker 1: people when I comment club and Nanny too, it was
- 23:40Speaker 1: my family who worked the door. It's my family who
- 23:42Speaker 1: set people down. I wouldn't be here without my family.
- 23:45Speaker 1: So I understand the value of your conversation because it's
- 23:48Speaker 1: that support system that can be family, can be friends,
- 23:50Speaker 1: but you gotta have that support system. And I want
- 23:52Speaker 1: to apologize right with Chris, I jumped the club sixty one. Really,
- 23:56Speaker 1: I want to get back over to where we really
- 23:58Speaker 1: originally brought you on the phone and talk about the Business, Entertainment,
- 24:02Speaker 1: Media and Sports event this happening September at the Alumni
- 24:06Speaker 1: Foundation Center. Please tell us in more detail exactly, Uh,
- 24:10Speaker 1: it is what the agenda is gonna be. I know
- 24:12Speaker 1: we have twargion fifty North count Ant students. Talk a
- 24:15Speaker 1: little bit more about that. So, Uh, the students, they're
- 24:19Speaker 1: gonna participate in a class, right, and they'll discuss case studies.
- 24:24Speaker 1: So that's what we did when I went to the
- 24:26Speaker 1: class at Harvard. So we'll have case studies. And it's
- 24:29Speaker 1: cool because one of the case studies is on the
- 24:33Speaker 1: ways like my brother, one of my really close friends,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and we'll get a chance to go over some of
- 24:41Speaker 1: his business things that he's had over the years and
- 24:45Speaker 1: decisions that he had to make, the same thing we'll
- 24:47Speaker 1: do for the Walt Disney Studios, which is a huge company,
- 24:51Speaker 1: major company. Um, And we'll get to have discussions and
- 24:57Speaker 1: I think the nicest, the best thing about the classes
- 24:59Speaker 1: that provide brainstorm and then you also get a chance
- 25:03Speaker 1: to get some real information that a lot of times
- 25:06Speaker 1: people don't know. That's why I'm so excited to be
- 25:09Speaker 1: a part of it. Also because you know, I've been blessed,
- 25:13Speaker 1: like I said, to be in some of these rooms
- 25:15Speaker 1: and some of these decisions on how they've been made.
- 25:17Speaker 1: So to talk to the students and let them ask
- 25:20Speaker 1: questions and you know, basically get behind the curtain on
- 25:24Speaker 1: a lot of a lot of major deals. You know
- 25:26Speaker 1: it really when you talk about the Walt Disney brand,
- 25:30Speaker 1: and this is what he's really saying. When you Okay,
- 25:32Speaker 1: let's look look at the Walt didn't brand. Let's break
- 25:34Speaker 1: that down ESPN, Hulu, Fox, Okay, Disney plus E ISBN
- 25:42Speaker 1: plus all of the parks. So when you just grab
- 25:46Speaker 1: Disney Alan, you got the whole gaming right now worldwide.
- 25:50Speaker 1: They got the six highest grossing movies in the world.
- 25:53Speaker 1: It's Walt Disney owned ABC don't want to forget a
- 25:58Speaker 1: free form. So when you're talking about is he alone?
- 26:00Speaker 1: It just it will just shock these young people to
- 26:03Speaker 1: know that how far it's brand did you associated with?
- 26:08Speaker 1: You might say, h picks are Marvel. Oh he's gonna
- 26:13Speaker 1: he's gonna check me now, he's gonna he's gonna check
- 26:16Speaker 1: me like, I'm just messing with you, Chris, just messing
- 26:21Speaker 1: with you because you're right, it's so much til Black
- 26:26Speaker 1: Panther absolutely absolutely, yeah, yeah, So all of these different
- 26:30Speaker 1: types of things. First of all, I want to let
- 26:31Speaker 1: you know thank you for coming on my show. I
- 26:33Speaker 1: want to let you know, please um anything you promote.
- 26:37Speaker 1: I'm a fan based in Houston. Still got a home
- 26:40Speaker 1: in Houston. I live in Atlanta, I've been in New York.
- 26:43Speaker 1: I'm doing a lot of things. I am a fan.
- 26:45Speaker 1: I went to the University of Houston. I also didn't
- 26:47Speaker 1: not go to an HBCU school, but I'm you know,
- 26:50Speaker 1: I would endown at my university Houston. But I am
- 26:53Speaker 1: going to be a major player as far as a
- 26:55Speaker 1: voce for HBCU schools. So no, whenever you need to
- 26:59Speaker 1: come our way, Chef n Smith Way, ras Sean mcdonaway,
- 27:02Speaker 1: Ricky Smiley Way, we will be there for you, brother,
- 27:05Speaker 1: because HBCUs need that voice. What did you say that here?
- 27:12Speaker 1: Thank you, my brother, and you've been thank you for
- 27:13Speaker 1: getting on this call. And I appreciate you, man, and
- 27:15Speaker 1: keep your family high man, because guess what they're the
- 27:18Speaker 1: reason you're strong. Okay, we'll be right back with more
- 27:24Speaker 1: from Rashan McDonald and Money Making Conversations don't touch that dot.

- 27:47Speaker 1: create that product or start selling products, the universe doesn't
- 27:51Speaker 1: have to deal with money Making Conversations continues online at
- 27:55Speaker 1: www dot money Making Conversations dot com. But next guest
- 28:00Speaker 1: is an actor, writer, director, and producer. He's a series
- 28:04Speaker 1: regular on ABC's hit drama A Million Little Things, starring
- 28:08Speaker 1: is the character Rome Howard. He is back on the
- 28:11Speaker 1: show to talk about the first season and the upcoming
- 28:14Speaker 1: second season, and I want to share some very important
- 28:17Speaker 1: advice that he gave me. He's the first born American
- 28:19Speaker 1: with Trinidadian descent. He has lived from Baytown, Texas to
- 28:23Speaker 1: Puerto Rico. Please welcome back the Money Making Conversations Rominy Malcolm. Hey,
- 28:30Speaker 1: thank you, Dan. That's a nice interes. Let's talk you
- 28:32Speaker 1: the best central. I have a guy, right there. Thank
- 28:34Speaker 1: you very much, Sean, appreciate that good. I'm happy to
- 28:37Speaker 1: be here. And and I want to know if I could,
- 28:39Speaker 1: if I could piggy back on what you were saying about,
- 28:42Speaker 1: you know, if you have a plan that you can
- 28:43Speaker 1: make it. Am I allowed to do that? Or do me? Now?
- 28:45Speaker 1: It just show us about to do your thing. I
- 28:49Speaker 1: just want to say something, you know. Uh, you know. Look,
- 28:52Speaker 1: one of the other things that really inhibits people, I believe,
- 28:55Speaker 1: from actually realizing their dreams is simply they have this
- 28:58Speaker 1: preconceived notion of what the process should be like. So
- 29:02Speaker 1: what that means is they think from what they take
- 29:05Speaker 1: things to face value, that they take the success they
- 29:07Speaker 1: see your face value, and then so they go into
- 29:09Speaker 1: it and they I don't care if you're just selling jewelry,
- 29:11Speaker 1: making YouTube videos, or running a fortune five hundred company.
- 29:15Speaker 1: The bottom line is that people are doing a lot
- 29:18Speaker 1: of additional work beyond what you're seeing and you know,
- 29:21Speaker 1: at face value. So in other words, there's so much
- 29:24Speaker 1: extra work that goes on behind the scenes. And I
- 29:27Speaker 1: don't don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about paying dudes.
- 29:29Speaker 1: Yes there's paying dudes, but there's also simple strategies and
- 29:33Speaker 1: techniques that we need mentors and we need non parvental
- 29:37Speaker 1: care in adults to inform usel because we hadn't walked
- 29:41Speaker 1: that path. And it's those little bits of insight that
- 29:43Speaker 1: saved us so much time. I wish I had known
- 29:45Speaker 1: that when I was younger. I caught to be a
- 29:47Speaker 1: lot further ahead of my own life. That's all. But
- 29:50Speaker 1: isn't that part of the growing process process to you know?
- 29:52Speaker 1: Because I always go back and I always tell people
- 29:54Speaker 1: what you learn in your twenties, it's really what the
- 29:56Speaker 1: structure of what you're going to be successful in your
- 29:58Speaker 1: forties and your fifties, because that's when you were fearless.
- 30:01Speaker 1: That's when you had the dreams, and if anybody told
- 30:03Speaker 1: you a question, you you tended to ignore that. But
- 30:06Speaker 1: as you got older, you got into relationships and you
- 30:09Speaker 1: start worried about the position you are in life. You know,
- 30:12Speaker 1: that fear of change, that fear of I bet, I bet,
- 30:16Speaker 1: I've been a hold back on this. So the whole
- 30:18Speaker 1: back what you say, right, No, but no, But there's
- 30:22Speaker 1: some value to that though, because you know something real talk.
- 30:25Speaker 1: I have to say that there was definitely a fearlessness uh,
- 30:29Speaker 1: you know, in my youth. But also what there was
- 30:33Speaker 1: was this uh lack of awareness of self. Because of
- 30:37Speaker 1: that lack of awareness of self, I had these unaddressed issues.
- 30:40Speaker 1: So by not knowing myself and not knowing what I
- 30:42Speaker 1: was capable of, I was kind of afraid that would
- 30:44Speaker 1: composed myself if any sense, very much. A lot of
- 30:48Speaker 1: people tell me, Yeah, people say, yo, well, I'm you're
- 30:50Speaker 1: so underrated. I'm not underrated, really, I'm just scared. So
- 30:54Speaker 1: I'm the dude to avoid a lot of the avoided
- 30:56Speaker 1: a lot of great opportunities simply because I was afraid
- 30:59Speaker 1: that I would be suppose it is not being worthy
- 31:01Speaker 1: or good enough. So I actually took I I actually
- 31:04Speaker 1: took refuge, and I found uh joy in being able
- 31:08Speaker 1: to be the side dude, being able to be the
- 31:10Speaker 1: supporting actor, you know. And you know that was really
- 31:14Speaker 1: a biproduct of just like deeper insecurity that hadn't been
- 31:17Speaker 1: addressed real talk. So I think that you know, we
- 31:19Speaker 1: have a fair defensive with kids, but there's a subconscious
- 31:22Speaker 1: thing as well where maybe we've been convinced by you know,
- 31:25Speaker 1: by our environment that we're not worthy. Not saying that
- 31:28Speaker 1: it's true we've just been convinced of it, and so
- 31:31Speaker 1: I think sometimes there's a lot of value in northern
- 31:33Speaker 1: in northern American countries, we tend to overlook, uh, the
- 31:37Speaker 1: need to resolve those issues as we pursue success. You know,
- 31:40Speaker 1: it's not just about willpowers. There is a resolve. Most
- 31:43Speaker 1: of the wealthy people that helped me make my movies,
- 31:45Speaker 1: that helped me make my money, they have all had
- 31:48Speaker 1: to put themselves in that vulnerable position of getting to
- 31:50Speaker 1: know themselves better. Because on the on the movie Prison Logic,
- 31:53Speaker 1: there was you did when you came on the show
- 31:55Speaker 1: last time? That was a crowdfunded movie. Correct, it was
- 31:59Speaker 1: a cloud on the movie. Now here was my strategy
- 32:01Speaker 1: on that. This is the prime example of what I'm
- 32:03Speaker 1: saying about getting to know the ins and outs of something.
- 32:06Speaker 1: I UH did so much research on cliud funding had
- 32:09Speaker 1: no idea that it wasn't just about you know, starting
- 32:13Speaker 1: up and asking your fans of money. There was so
- 32:15Speaker 1: much strategy and to be quite frank, like that cloud
- 32:18Speaker 1: funding game as shady as hell, and you you would
- 32:20Speaker 1: not believe it. All the all the skulls that we
- 32:22Speaker 1: could go on behind the scenes and being able to
- 32:25Speaker 1: learn and understand that. But what I did was I
- 32:27Speaker 1: used the cloud funding campaign to attract investors. So here's
- 32:30Speaker 1: the prime example of a strategy you might not know.
- 32:32Speaker 1: You never asked for a hundred percent of what you
- 32:34Speaker 1: want when you're running a cloud funding campaign. Always asked
- 32:37Speaker 1: about fifty because statistically, a successful cloud funding campaign will
- 32:41Speaker 1: be funded on average between two hundred to a thousand
- 32:44Speaker 1: percent of asking. So that means that if you're asking
- 32:48Speaker 1: for a hundred thousand and your campaign is successful, your
- 32:50Speaker 1: gaarmantee to make somewhere between two hundred thousand and a million,
- 32:57Speaker 1: you get so so the my math might be up
- 33:01Speaker 1: there you saw. I got a little secure when I
- 33:02Speaker 1: saw that, calculating the point you're all comedians. You're all comedians, right,
- 33:09Speaker 1: um so so anyway, so what I did was I
- 33:12Speaker 1: made the crowd fund the campaign successful by asking for
- 33:14Speaker 1: half of what I wanted, and then went to investors
- 33:17Speaker 1: show infestis, look, this campaign is hot and people like
- 33:19Speaker 1: to see your train this role. And like my manager
- 33:21Speaker 1: told me, sometimes you gotta start your party and then
- 33:24Speaker 1: sending out the invitations. And that's kind of what I did.
- 33:26Speaker 1: I used the campaign to attract confestors by making the
- 33:29Speaker 1: campaign look like you had a huge following and a
- 33:32Speaker 1: lot of people that were back in it that inspired
- 33:34Speaker 1: and motivated the investors, and so we ended up doing that.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Um I made the movie. I saw the winning stuff
- 33:39Speaker 1: at all these different festivals, and I didn't even listen.
- 33:42Speaker 1: I wasn't in sun Dance and all those festivals. I
- 33:44Speaker 1: was actually in the festivals that were hosted in places
- 33:47Speaker 1: where people had given me money. And I said, we're
- 33:50Speaker 1: gonna submit to them festivals. We went to them festivals.
- 33:52Speaker 1: We was winning Best Lead Audience Audience Awards. That edited
- 33:56Speaker 1: the death music lesson. Right then James Littlepez for Will
- 34:00Speaker 1: Packer's company, saw that I loved it, took it to
- 34:03Speaker 1: Will Packer. They called me, like eleven o'clock at night,
- 34:05Speaker 1: you wanted to talk about it. I got on the
- 34:06Speaker 1: phone with In fact, that's my Instagram post this morning.
- 34:09Speaker 1: I got on the phone with them, and the next
- 34:10Speaker 1: thing you know, we were selling it to Smith Global Media,
- 34:12Speaker 1: which is will Will Smith's brother, Hay Smith. First time
- 34:16Speaker 1: I got on the phone with him, I thought they
- 34:17Speaker 1: was plunking me. I really thought it was Will because
- 34:19Speaker 1: they found so much Likelih. But anyway, so that movie
- 34:23Speaker 1: comes out next year to February. We look for it. Okay,
- 34:28Speaker 1: you know we have so much great things we've talked
- 34:30Speaker 1: about so far. I'm gonna wrap up this particular break.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Let's talk about the movie that's coming out in November
- 34:34Speaker 1: called Holiday Rush that's coming on Netflix. Let's let's wrap
- 34:37Speaker 1: this break up talking about that all Holiday Rush that's
- 34:40Speaker 1: coming out of the Netflix in November. Correct, man, let
- 34:44Speaker 1: me tell you something that I don't know. If you
- 34:45Speaker 1: know who Leslie Small is, he's a man. Come on.
- 34:48Speaker 1: He did like three Neighborhood Awards. He directed like three
- 34:51Speaker 1: Neighborhood Awards for me. I know Leslie Small. Okay, dude,
- 34:55Speaker 1: that that's first of all, ask my brother. This dude
- 34:57Speaker 1: is incredible. One of the most inspiring him in he's
- 35:00Speaker 1: ever met. This dude. He's directed Kevin Hard to stand ups,
- 35:04Speaker 1: can organ stand up, became a big comedian. He's he's
- 35:07Speaker 1: he's hit him in their prime. Right. So he's like, Yo,
- 35:10Speaker 1: I want you to do this movie. I want you
- 35:12Speaker 1: to play the lead. And again, like I said, the man,
- 35:14Speaker 1: securities kicked there and I was like, you wanted me
- 35:15Speaker 1: to play the lead. You want to meet like Romany
- 35:18Speaker 1: Maunco to play lead Romany Malco living in Puerto Rico
- 35:21Speaker 1: to Funti Texas at Baytown, Texas. Right, I'm like, you
- 35:27Speaker 1: want to meet Baker and he was like, yes, So
- 35:30Speaker 1: let me tell something. I felt insecure making the whole
- 35:32Speaker 1: movie where he cast a Niqua Martin Green, he cast
- 35:35Speaker 1: the uncle. These people showed up so on, so on,
- 35:39Speaker 1: another level of prepared and funny, and they forced me
- 35:43Speaker 1: to tap into something in myself that I didn't even
- 35:45Speaker 1: know I had. And I kept going to him every
- 35:47Speaker 1: other scene and being like, are you sure, Because I'm sure?
- 35:50Speaker 1: Because you're not sure, he says, You're not supposed to
- 35:52Speaker 1: feel comfortable here. You're supposed to be being stretching. That's
- 35:55Speaker 1: what happened. So here what happened. I So we make
- 35:58Speaker 1: the movie. I go away, I come back, so I
- 36:01Speaker 1: have to do a b R. So I have to
- 36:03Speaker 1: do a b R like maybe like four months later.
- 36:05Speaker 1: And that's what you kind of put your your match.
- 36:07Speaker 1: You have to fix some dialogue that didn't go right
- 36:08Speaker 1: in the movie. And I get to see about fifteen
- 36:11Speaker 1: minutes of this movie. Oh my god, I cannot tell
- 36:13Speaker 1: you how much I enjoyed watching this movie. I play
- 36:16Speaker 1: a single father, a widowed father of four kids. I
- 36:20Speaker 1: have I have said the twins. I have a preteen
- 36:22Speaker 1: and a preteen daughter, and a teenage son who's about
- 36:25Speaker 1: to go to college. And I'm a big time holiday
- 36:29Speaker 1: I'm I'm a big time radio host, just like you.
- 36:32Speaker 1: You know, and you know, and and and then all
- 36:36Speaker 1: of a sudden, my station gets sold to some people
- 36:39Speaker 1: that are talking about they going in a different direction.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And I have no job, I have nothing. And me
- 36:44Speaker 1: and my family, you know, after losing our wife, losing
- 36:47Speaker 1: my wife and and then my kid's mother, we kind
- 36:50Speaker 1: of went down the superficial road to kind of just
- 36:53Speaker 1: you know, uh, put a band aid over the hurt
- 36:55Speaker 1: that we were feeling. And now we have to learn
- 36:57Speaker 1: new values because we can't get we can't be super
- 37:00Speaker 1: specially anymore, we can't afford to be. And so it's
- 37:02Speaker 1: the story about the family learning real value. Season two
- 37:05Speaker 1: premiere of A Million Little Thing, when the stars of
- 37:08Speaker 1: the show plays the character Room Howard Uh, he's best friends,
- 37:12Speaker 1: his two best friends left, but he's also dealing with
- 37:14Speaker 1: a lot of issues himself, and the fact that we're
- 37:16Speaker 1: able to talk about it. Basically, the text of it,
- 37:19Speaker 1: the gang rallies around the Lilah. That's the best friend
- 37:22Speaker 1: of the suicide best friend, the wife of the best
- 37:25Speaker 1: friend suicide, wife of the one who committed suicide. See
- 37:29Speaker 1: how we're talking man wife for the best friend she died.
- 37:31Speaker 1: She's having the baby with the other best friend. You know,
- 37:33Speaker 1: you know, with his character about to commit suicide. Then
- 37:36Speaker 1: at the end of the series, he turned to his
- 37:38Speaker 1: wife said he understands now we need to have a baby,
- 37:41Speaker 1: and she goes, I want to do everything you want
- 37:43Speaker 1: to do, but not that. Yeah, that was a heartbreaker,
- 37:51Speaker 1: And then into deliver room and he's just standing there going, huh.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I thought I was about to say something you wanted
- 37:56Speaker 1: to hear. She said, honey, I want to do everything
- 37:59Speaker 1: that you want to you, but not that. O my lord,
- 38:06Speaker 1: I love it. This is and this show keeps throwing
- 38:10Speaker 1: you twists. I can't wait. I mean, I'm so grateful.
- 38:12Speaker 1: Do you actually quote Michelle I it needs a lot
- 38:15Speaker 1: that you took time to watch the show. Man really
- 38:17Speaker 1: does thank you very much because I know you got
- 38:19Speaker 1: a lot to do. Absolutely, And the thing nobody is
- 38:22Speaker 1: that I do have a lot to do. But guess
- 38:23Speaker 1: what when I when? I because first of all, your
- 38:26Speaker 1: your your lovel of quality work that you're involved in,
- 38:29Speaker 1: because you know, I first became a fan of your

- 38:33Speaker 1: years on Weeds. Okay, and then you blessed me by
- 38:37Speaker 1: starting the two of the movies that I was executive producing.
- 38:39Speaker 1: And think like a man, and think like a man too.
- 38:41Speaker 1: So I'm a fan. I'm a fan. I'm a and
- 38:44Speaker 1: then you you blessed me by coming on my show.
- 38:47Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. And they gave giving me momentum,
- 38:50Speaker 1: your star power, give me momentum to get other people
- 38:52Speaker 1: run me on this show. Well I'll come over sean
- 38:55Speaker 1: show too, you know, because when you when you, it's
- 38:57Speaker 1: all about relationships, you know. And so to come back
- 38:59Speaker 1: this time, I had to be ready for you because
- 39:02Speaker 1: you and then all of a sudden let me in
- 39:04Speaker 1: on prison logic. You let me see that before I
- 39:07Speaker 1: got sold, before I got before it started giving the awards.
- 39:10Speaker 1: Come on, man, you blessed me. Okay. Man, Yeah, y'all,
- 39:16Speaker 1: y'all have been y'all have been lessons in my life.
- 39:20Speaker 1: From the minute I hit the scene. All I can

- 41:05Speaker 1: is a motivational show. It's an inspirational show and show
- 41:09Speaker 1: that when the people listen to my show, they walk
- 41:11Speaker 1: away with information that will help them be successful. I
- 41:15Speaker 1: talked about planning. I talked about goals and talking about
- 41:18Speaker 1: dreams and turn those dreams into reality. And it's all
- 41:21Speaker 1: about being a planner, all about realizing that what you
- 41:25Speaker 1: want to accomplish in life, you have to work hard
- 41:27Speaker 1: for you. Hear that statement a lot working hard, working hard?
- 41:30Speaker 1: How do you work hard? What's the plan to work hard?
- 41:33Speaker 1: Is their day off when you're working hard? All this
- 41:36Speaker 1: is part of the process. That's why I created Money
- 41:38Speaker 1: Making Conversation. But my next interview really it's uh, it's
- 41:43Speaker 1: about food. It's about reshaance. I think, um second favorite thing,
- 41:49Speaker 1: not that you do in life is eat. The other
- 41:52Speaker 1: parties just living. I love living, but eating. My friends
- 41:55Speaker 1: no me, they know I love to eat. And this
- 41:59Speaker 1: this this UH interview a feature I called Rushan Eats.
- 42:03Speaker 1: It's on my website, Baker Spotlight. You go there different
- 42:07Speaker 1: places I've been told about UH that are amazing restaurants.
- 42:12Speaker 1: I make them a part of Rushan Eats. So that's
- 42:16Speaker 1: just a setup of my introduction to my next guests.
- 42:19Speaker 1: My next guest first introduced Texans to their mouth watering
- 42:22Speaker 1: turkey legs as the Houston Rodeo. In let you know
- 42:27Speaker 1: about the Houston Livestock Showing Rodeo. Roughly two million people
- 42:31Speaker 1: attend the Houston Livestock Showing Rodeo every year. Just let
- 42:34Speaker 1: you know. It's not just a regular rodeo. So just
- 42:36Speaker 1: to get just to be a Protestant, be a vendor
- 42:39Speaker 1: at the Houston Livestock Showing Rodeo is a game change,
- 42:42Speaker 1: especially for minorities. In three short years, the Houston couple
- 42:46Speaker 1: has taken their widely popular turkey legs to new heights,
- 42:49Speaker 1: expanding their menu to include seven varieties of suculent, fall
- 42:53Speaker 1: off the home, fall off the bone turkey legs in
- 42:56Speaker 1: a full compliment of homemade delicacies at their first Turkey
- 43:00Speaker 1: Leg location on al me the Road and the heart
- 43:03Speaker 1: of Houston and historic Third War Texas. Third War Texas,
- 43:07Speaker 1: Texas Southerners there. University of Houston where I went to
- 43:10Speaker 1: school was there. Jack Gates, one of the most powerful
- 43:13Speaker 1: football program African American programs in the history of Texas football,
- 43:17Speaker 1: is located in Third War Texas. The restaurant has also
- 43:20Speaker 1: become a popular Houston spot, hot spot with late night
- 43:25Speaker 1: hours and sold for live music every Tuesday. Please welcome
- 43:28Speaker 1: to money Making Conversation. One of the owners of Turkey

- 43:35Speaker 1: stuff turkey Legs. Please welcome. Killa Price. I'll tell you what,
- 43:43Speaker 1: um you know, just saying your name, MS. Price makes
- 43:46Speaker 1: me home. You know that, you know that, you know
- 43:49Speaker 1: I got the I got the website up, I got
- 43:52Speaker 1: all this amazing food. You post the video. The rappers
- 43:55Speaker 1: love you, your videos going viral. Before we even get
- 43:58Speaker 1: into the question, just let me no, or you overwhelmed
- 44:02Speaker 1: by all this, or it's just like you prayed about
- 44:04Speaker 1: it and you knew this was gonna happen, you know,
- 44:06Speaker 1: with hard work and faith and all that good stuff
- 44:08Speaker 1: and people surrounded. Let's talk about how you feeling about this,
- 44:11Speaker 1: because right now I'm feeling hongry. I think it's definitely
- 44:17Speaker 1: something that we prayed about. Um. We never in a
- 44:20Speaker 1: million years did we imagine that it would be to
- 44:23Speaker 1: this extent. But every day of the journey, we take
- 44:26Speaker 1: it one day at a time, and one day at
- 44:28Speaker 1: the time means what because your business because you expanding.
- 44:32Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about that later. Expanding the business. I'm
- 44:34Speaker 1: sure people just dropping all these ideas about franchise and
- 44:37Speaker 1: gr y'all could be the next such and such, and
- 44:41Speaker 1: you have to take that in stride because the fact that,
- 44:43Speaker 1: like I said, what were you when I was at
- 44:46Speaker 1: the livestop? Where were you have before? Before I was
- 44:49Speaker 1: at the livestop? But before that, my husband had a
- 44:55Speaker 1: repo company. He was recoring our v trailers and I
- 44:59Speaker 1: myself was that you your project manager for a litigation firms.
- 45:02Speaker 1: So neither one of us had culinary background or culinary experience. Um,
- 45:07Speaker 1: you know, was something that that happened he had. We
- 45:10Speaker 1: had the idea we were disappointing to you know, with
- 45:13Speaker 1: the rodeo, we were shuttling people into the rodeo. So
- 45:17Speaker 1: food wasn't even our main focus at that point in time. Um,
- 45:22Speaker 1: and our main focus was shuttling people into the rodeo.
- 45:25Speaker 1: We just had a barbecue pit on the field in
- 45:27Speaker 1: the field where we were shuttling the people, and we
- 45:31Speaker 1: had turkey legs, food and sausage on a stick. And
- 45:35Speaker 1: you know, we came up with the idea that we
- 45:37Speaker 1: were just going to feed people while they were waiting
- 45:38Speaker 1: to go inside at the rodeo. And my husband, he,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you know, his thing was just repost for us social media,
- 45:45Speaker 1: social media. Everything is social social media reposed for us.
- 45:48Speaker 1: Let's see what happens, and it just snowball from there.
- 45:52Speaker 1: So the fact that he had the foresight and understand
- 45:55Speaker 1: the value of social media, and you got the these
- 45:58Speaker 1: giant pizzas and you know, I'm gonnae to yourself, you
- 46:00Speaker 1: know because will you say your clienteles African American? Yes, okay, cool?
- 46:07Speaker 1: I want just before I make to stake because black
- 46:09Speaker 1: people like value for their money. Okay, so correct, you
- 46:12Speaker 1: see you see this giant I'm telling you so that
- 46:14Speaker 1: giant turkey leg and then like any any restaurant you
- 46:17Speaker 1: I can say this, and black people they can, they
- 46:18Speaker 1: can confront me on this. But if you if you
- 46:21Speaker 1: take a black pot to the restaurant when they can't
- 46:22Speaker 1: go home with a doggy bag, you got them. As
- 46:24Speaker 1: a customer, you do, you do, and we made that's
- 46:28Speaker 1: one of the things that we've always made sure that
- 46:30Speaker 1: you know our price points. It may not be for everyone,
- 46:34Speaker 1: but people pay for what it is that they want,
- 46:36Speaker 1: and we make sure that you get the value as well.
- 46:39Speaker 1: So you're paying. But you also, I mean, all of
- 46:41Speaker 1: our plates are sharable. We give you a lot of foods,
- 46:45Speaker 1: a lot of food you sure do so, so you
- 46:47Speaker 1: understood that, you know, and I would tell you that.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Just let's talk about the basic turkey leg. Okay, I've
- 46:53Speaker 1: I've tried to man up. I've been at Disney, I've
- 46:56Speaker 1: been an amusement park, and I'm trying to man up.
- 46:58Speaker 1: Go get my turkey leg. Canna say, I'm gonna finish
- 47:01Speaker 1: this and lord, note it has beaten me every time,
- 47:04Speaker 1: just the turkey leg okay, has beating your board back. Okay,
- 47:11Speaker 1: I'm looking about trying to hand this off to somebody
- 47:12Speaker 1: because you know, when you're walking to our amusement park.
- 47:14Speaker 1: You got the turkey, la, you gotta do something with
- 47:16Speaker 1: it because you're not eating anymore. Okay, so you go
- 47:19Speaker 1: in the restaurant and then y'all, I'm gonna say, call
- 47:22Speaker 1: y'all crazy because y'all not all stuffed it. Yeah, it's
- 47:27Speaker 1: crazy people thinking like that. You're crazy. People are geniuses. Okay,
- 47:30Speaker 1: it's a genius about this whole thing that they took
- 47:32Speaker 1: a basic piece of meat that is that it's impossible
- 47:36Speaker 1: for a normal person to eat. Then they're gonna go
- 47:41Speaker 1: just the crazy part. We're gonna put something else in there,
- 47:44Speaker 1: extra stuff, extra stuff. And then so so that's the part. Now,
- 47:48Speaker 1: when y'all was I was shuttling people in, you didn't
- 47:51Speaker 1: have the stuff part of the campaign yet. Correct. Okay,
- 47:55Speaker 1: when did that craziness developed? Kill? When who thought that?
- 47:59Speaker 1: I live know what you who thought of that? I
- 48:03Speaker 1: have to give credit? What credit is? It was? That
- 48:05Speaker 1: was his idea to stuff to turulate. See he out
- 48:08Speaker 1: there to people, to people, they think of stuff like that.
- 48:17Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, because he knows he knows the
- 48:21Speaker 1: value of extra cause see I used to when I
- 48:23Speaker 1: when I was when I was living in Houston, I
- 48:25Speaker 1: used to onload trucks and the food trucks come by.
- 48:29Speaker 1: So everything you look at you always want some extra
- 48:31Speaker 1: and all your your fantasized. But if I got this,
- 48:34Speaker 1: I put this over top. See he's one of he's
- 48:36Speaker 1: one of the people you should put food on the plate.
- 48:38Speaker 1: He don't care if it touches. Some people don't like that.
- 48:42Speaker 1: And I'm that person that doesn't like that. I'm saying,
- 48:44Speaker 1: but he don't care. It's all going down one one pipe.
- 48:48Speaker 1: That's the same thing. See he liked me, he like.
- 48:53Speaker 1: So what they have done, these crazy this crazy couple.
- 48:56Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying that this amazing restaurant called
- 48:59Speaker 1: the Turkey Leg Hut in Houston, Texas, have said, look,
- 49:03Speaker 1: we got this big old was meat. We're gonna jazz
- 49:07Speaker 1: it up. Now, what was the first thing. What was
- 49:09Speaker 1: the first jazz that you added to the beat? There?
- 49:13Speaker 1: The first jazz that we added was the dirty rice.
- 49:17Speaker 1: I was the first. Ya, Yes, they knew exactly. And
- 49:20Speaker 1: then thereafter we had the shrimp. And now Alfredo saw
- 49:27Speaker 1: see they went jazzy right there had to be a
- 49:29Speaker 1: little higher than normal though that You just don't add
- 49:32Speaker 1: shrimp on a turkey leg and just keep it normal
- 49:34Speaker 1: for you now see dirty rights. You can keep that
- 49:39Speaker 1: reasonable right there, but that you gotta have to see
- 49:43Speaker 1: the thing about just I love about what I'm talking
- 49:45Speaker 1: about it because see when people come in the restaurants
- 49:48Speaker 1: like that, you gotta have a price point. I learned
- 49:50Speaker 1: that from Thorn concert. Everybody. Everybody don't want to buy
- 49:53Speaker 1: the twenty dollar ticket. Some people want to. They wanted
- 49:56Speaker 1: Pacific one to seventified dollar ticket because they think it
- 49:59Speaker 1: has more value. Alright, so certain client teller they have
- 50:03Speaker 1: they want that high end. This is very true. Yes, otherwise,
- 50:11Speaker 1: and that's actually our best seller. See I know it's
- 50:16Speaker 1: my fond and that goes back to people pay for
- 50:19Speaker 1: what it is that they want. Okay, cool, now, I
- 50:23Speaker 1: don't think I missed this question. What gave you the
- 50:25Speaker 1: idea to stuff or turkey leg? Like I said, that
- 50:30Speaker 1: was my husband's idea, you know, he we were playing
- 50:33Speaker 1: around with everything. You know how we the original turkey leg,
- 50:38Speaker 1: the regular turkey leg. It has stuffing in it, but
- 50:40Speaker 1: it's it's stuffed with different seasonings, um, different vegetables, things
- 50:45Speaker 1: that we I mean, you know, things that we've incorporated
- 50:48Speaker 1: into the turkey leg. So it's not a regular turkey leg.
- 50:50Speaker 1: It's not a walk around the fair holding turkey leg.
- 50:54Speaker 1: It's there's a process to how we do our turkey legs.
- 50:58Speaker 1: And then thereafter, you know, he was like, you know
- 51:01Speaker 1: we you know, we always try to challenge each other, slim,
- 51:04Speaker 1: if that's what he calls me, slam, I think we should,
- 51:07Speaker 1: you know, maybe stuffing with dirty rice. And I'm like,
- 51:09Speaker 1: what dirty right, Yeah, I'm telling you it's gonna work.
- 51:12Speaker 1: It's don't work. And I'm like, okay, I don't see it,
- 51:15Speaker 1: but let's do it. And so when we went into
- 51:18Speaker 1: the brick and mortar, we stopped the turkey leg and
- 51:22Speaker 1: just like you know, when I was trying to tell
- 51:24Speaker 1: him about the season and and he told me we
- 51:26Speaker 1: didn't need to do it, the same thing happened. People
- 51:29Speaker 1: came from everywhere to try to stop circulate. Now, that's
- 51:33Speaker 1: that's really amazing. So so let's talk about your journey. Okay,
- 51:37Speaker 1: before that, you had two jobs that were not not
- 51:40Speaker 1: not cool and very related. That's not what you guys, correct.
- 51:44Speaker 1: You had to transportation, you transporting people back and forth.
- 51:46Speaker 1: You decided to feed the people. Are you transporting them?
- 51:48Speaker 1: Make a little extra money on side? That's all. That's
- 51:50Speaker 1: just like a little bobby stand, you know, we're doing
- 51:52Speaker 1: to come out of the nightclub at three o'clock in
- 51:54Speaker 1: the morning. You always had the guy there with the
- 51:56Speaker 1: with the hot links, you know, and they some reason
- 51:59Speaker 1: they taste real good at three o'clock in the morning.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Same hot link. It during the daylight don't taste to say,
- 52:04Speaker 1: but three o'clock in the morning, that hot link was
- 52:06Speaker 1: was cracke. And so that's true. The whole part about
- 52:10Speaker 1: moving towards the brick and more, which is the which
- 52:13Speaker 1: is the really the fear part of it, the business
- 52:15Speaker 1: planning part of it, because you're about to take a
- 52:17Speaker 1: rich because you gotta sign a lease and you have
- 52:19Speaker 1: to have a certain level of you know, inventory to
- 52:23Speaker 1: say this is going to be successful. Walk us through
- 52:25Speaker 1: that process, because that's what money making conversation is always about.
- 52:29Speaker 1: We have a look about a minute, leyoff. We don't
- 52:31Speaker 1: I like to wrap that thought up in the next break,
- 52:33Speaker 1: but please start us all about the whole process of
- 52:35Speaker 1: the bricket mortar. So you know, our how we started
- 52:41Speaker 1: was very unique. It wasn't you know, the typical you know,
- 52:45Speaker 1: we're gonna seek brick and mortar and this is what
- 52:47Speaker 1: we're gonna do. It was actually got a phone call
- 52:51Speaker 1: from someone that he went to school with about a
- 52:53Speaker 1: location that UM didn't have much business and with the
- 52:58Speaker 1: following that we had garnered while we were out there
- 53:00Speaker 1: in the field. It was like, hey, you know you
- 53:03Speaker 1: all have a following, would you be interested in coming
- 53:06Speaker 1: and you know, just checking out the kitchen seeing if
- 53:09Speaker 1: this is the place that you all want to continue
- 53:10Speaker 1: to sell turkey legs and UM, and that was it.
- 53:15Speaker 1: So we you know, we went over there. We didn't
- 53:16Speaker 1: know anything about running a restaurant. Everything with us and
- 53:20Speaker 1: I think that's why we appreciate it so much more
- 53:23Speaker 1: has been trial and error. White people, they were standing
- 53:25Speaker 1: along restaurant life'll do that. That's very true. Black people.
- 53:30Speaker 1: They're very impatient people, very impatient people. It has to
- 53:34Speaker 1: be something behind that dope that they're gonna keep that place.
- 53:38Speaker 1: That's why when somebody cuts in front of him, there's
- 53:40Speaker 1: a problem all give doing. If it's if it's uh,
- 53:43Speaker 1: Steve Harvey, Oh Steve, I don't care. I don't care. No,
- 53:50Speaker 1: they don't, they don't, They do not care, and they
- 53:53Speaker 1: get upset, get upset now, so on Tuesdays. You also
- 53:57Speaker 1: do a live music at the at the Rig. You
- 54:00Speaker 1: know turkey leg hut Okay, correct, Yes, we do live
- 54:04Speaker 1: band seven thirty every Tuesday. But you can do You'll
- 54:09Speaker 1: be jamming. You know your turkey leg jamming. You know
- 54:12Speaker 1: your turkey leg to music, grooving to the beat. Yeah,
- 54:17Speaker 1: the kid, y'all on fire. You guys are on fire.
- 54:20Speaker 1: You love No, No, I gotta ask this, you know.
- 54:24Speaker 1: I'm all right. Like I said, I graduated from the
- 54:26Speaker 1: University Houston. Have they have they on you yet as
- 54:30Speaker 1: a as a as an alumnus of the school. We
