- 0:00OK, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain Peaks.
- 0:04Today's going to be a little bit different of an episode.
- 0:07I just got back from a long weekend up in northern Maine,
- 0:11did a little trip my friends to Lake Moosehead and the biggest
- 0:16lake in Maine. And initially I was going to try
- 0:19to do like a little bit of maybe filming some podcast stuff
- 0:23there, kind of stitch something fun or cool or different
- 0:26together, but it did not really work out.
- 0:30I think like trips in general and this trip like there's just
- 0:33so much going on, so busy. It's just like kind of it was
- 0:36hard. It's already got enough stuff
- 0:38doing, doing all the different things, you know, seeing people
- 0:41I haven't seen for a while. So didn't pull.
- 0:44There's going to be no direct content or videos from that
- 0:47trip, but out of inspiration, we're going to do a full Maine,
- 0:53Northern Maine Lake Moosehead Trip Stories podcast today.
- 1:00So it's going to be we're going to do a little bit of running.
- 1:03We have some running topics, but it's going to be a lot of kind
- 1:05of Maine stories. So growing up, we had a little
- 1:09camp in central Maine. I went to school at the
- 1:12University of Maine, so I met all of these guys and I spent a
- 1:16good amount of time up at Moosehead on our annual trip
- 1:19there. So we got a lot of stories.
- 1:20It's going to be a deep dive into all things Maine.
- 1:24Shut up, Maine. But so we'll do all that stuff.
- 1:27We're going to mix in a little bit of extreme sports talk
- 1:30because I was, I was kind of thinking back some of my main
- 1:34memories and some extreme sports got brought up.
- 1:37So we'll talk about that. And then I just got a, a sleep
- 1:42tracker. So I've been tracking my sleep
- 1:45every night, getting into some of those metrics.
- 1:47So I am going to do a little bit of a training sleep metrics
- 1:51talk, how that's been going for me.
- 1:54We're going to bring back the motivational minute.
- 1:57Haven't done a little bit of motivation in a while.
- 1:59So we'll do some motivation stuff.
- 2:01And then we're going to do my top three favorite chips.
- 2:07We're going to do a chip talk. I think the last ranking we did
- 2:11was a fruit ranking. And I had, yeah, I think that
- 2:15went, I think that went fine. But I every anytime I do it a
- 2:18ranking, I'm like just I question myself and I have to
- 2:21just stand, you know, whatever I say, it's going to be the final.
- 2:24So we'll do that. And yeah, we're going to talk
- 2:27about some like running mountain stuff in Maine.
- 2:29And I hug Katahdin when I went up to college, so and there's
- 2:34some awesome mountains around the Moosehead area that I
- 2:38always, I'm kind of looking at Mount Keneo's awesome.
- 2:40So we're going to do some mountain talk, some main talk,
- 2:43some fun stuff. So it should be a good episode.
- 2:46Stick with us. And before we get started, we
- 2:49are going to do another 62nd training tip.
- 2:53This tip is going to be revolving around cooling.
- 2:56Everyone knows that cooling can help your output in running, you
- 3:00know, specifically during races. But I also use cooling during my
- 3:04speed workouts, especially if I'm indoors.
- 3:06Like if you're on a treadmill or a Stairmaster doing a workout,
- 3:09it's like so easy to just have some cooling with you.
- 3:12So what I do to cool me off when I'm doing hard interval workouts
- 3:16is just bring a bag, a Ziploc bag, sandwich bag of ice.
- 3:21If I leave the house and I'm going to the gym to do a workout
- 3:24and I don't have my ice, I will go back and or stop at a gas
- 3:27station to get ice because I feel like it just helps me get a
- 3:31little more out of myself during the workouts when they're really
- 3:33hard. When you, when you fill it up at
- 3:36the beginning, it's not going to be super melty.
- 3:38It's going to kind of feel a little rigid.
- 3:40But after like 10 or 15 minutes of kind of touching it, using it
- 3:44during your workout, it will melt a little bit and it starts
- 3:48kind of like feeling it's contorts to your body almost.
- 3:51And I rub it on my hands, my face, my neck, my arms, my
- 3:55stomach, anywhere that seems kind of hot, like just trying to
- 3:58cool your body down. I just rub myself with a bag of
- 4:01ice at the gym and at Planet Fitness and most people stare at
- 4:04me. But it's OK 'cause I'm getting
- 4:06gains. So that was the tip today.
- 4:08If you have any questions, like always, go to
- 4:11runmountainpeaks.com and you can just send me a message there.
- 4:15But OK, getting into the main talk.
- 4:19So I guess I'll do like a brief history of my main roots.
- 4:23So I grew up in in Southern New Hampshire, but growing up, we
- 4:27had a little camp in central Maine that that I would go to a
- 4:31couple times a year. And so that was kind of good
- 4:33exposure. Central Maine is very rural, but
- 4:38it was a cool place. I always loved going up there.
- 4:40And then for college I went to University of Maine, I went to
- 4:45Orono. And so I lived in Maine for
- 4:48three years, I mean for the majority of three years when I
- 4:51was going to school there. So I got to see a lot of Maine.
- 4:55And thinking back, I actually, I don't think I fully utilized
- 5:03like living in Maine. Obviously you're going to
- 5:06college different priorities, like I hadn't gotten to hiking
- 5:09as much. I still like getting outdoors
- 5:11and doing some stuff around that, you know, around around
- 5:14the campus and stuff. But I wasn't like I only went to
- 5:17Katahdin once. I didn't, I didn't fully, I
- 5:20wasn't into the outdoor hiking running scene yet, which is
- 5:24fine. I'm in college.
- 5:25You know, I, I was there for school, did a lot of school, did
- 5:27a lot of sports, intermeal stuff.
- 5:29But I think just the the remoteness, the outdoors of
- 5:34Maine is just so awesome. Didn't fully get out in there,
- 5:37but I still had a good experience.
- 5:42So yeah, basically what I'm trying to say is I I wasn't
- 5:45doing any of this hiking, running stuff on trails, so I
- 5:47didn't explore many of the trails around there.
- 5:50The campus on Orono had a bunch of trail systems that I like to
- 5:53just go on like walks for. I really like doing that and did
- 5:57a little bit of like fishing around there.
- 5:59Did some hunting in central Maine, like by our camp, but
- 6:03that's the extent of my outdoor experience there.
- 6:06So a little bit of a miss, but you know, I think I, I love
- 6:10getting up to northern Maine. So I get back there.
- 6:11I, I'm going to try to, in the future get back there more.
- 6:14But one of the stories that I did want to tell is before going
- 6:19to college at U Maine, they had an orientation week up at U
- 6:25Maine. So it was just like, I think an
- 6:27easy way to kind of meet people 'cause I didn't really know
- 6:29anyone. I knew a couple people from my,
- 6:32my hometown that were going to U Maine.
- 6:34I wasn't super close with them, with them hung on with them,
- 6:37maybe a little bit on campus, but I didn't really know anyone.
- 6:40This was kind of like me doing my own thing.
- 6:42So I went to this orientation to kind of meet people and it was
- 6:47an outdoor adventure weekend with miscellaneous activities
- 6:52that you could choose. So the ones that I choose, I
- 6:56think that the base camp, we we camped up in Baxter State Parks
- 7:00that was kind of like the base camp.
- 7:02And then the activities that I choose were I hike Katahdin, I
- 7:07did whitewater rafting and then maybe there was one more like
- 7:10canoeing or something. No, it wasn't canoeing, but I
- 7:12can't really remember. But the two I remember were the
- 7:14whitewater rafting in the, the Katahdin.
- 7:17So so that I went on that trip and it was like a cool way to
- 7:21meet people. And I met a few people there and
- 7:23just kind of like, you know, got my toe into like, you don't know
- 7:26anyone. You, you don't know anyone here.
- 7:28You have to make friends. And so that was one of my first,
- 7:32I would say, what year was that? I just was looking at my grid
- 7:36application sheet and I think I had a few 4000 footers, like
- 7:40maybe one or two in 2015, 2016. But Kitato was probably like my
- 7:44biggest hike to date. It was definitely like a big
- 7:47deal when I did it. And I, I mean, it was cool.
- 7:52I remember, that's what I remember.
- 7:53I remember it being cool. I remember I wanted to do the
- 7:56knife's edge, but there was no like there was only a handful of
- 8:01people or like, I don't know, there were a bunch of groups
- 8:02that you got to got to sign up for and like it was already full
- 8:06or something. So I couldn't do the knife's
- 8:08edge, but I hiked Katahdin. I'm sure I don't even know the
- 8:13route. Like I haven't been up to that
- 8:15area that well. I know we kind of went up this
- 8:17steep area and then Katahdin was off to over my right shoulder
- 8:21way in the distance. So that's if, if you guys can
- 8:26can put that together, that's the trail I went up.
- 8:28And I one of the things I do remember that hike was I don't
- 8:32even remember being like how strenuous it was if I was tired,
- 8:35how long it took. No recollection of that.
- 8:38But I do remember getting up above tree line and seeing
- 8:42Katahdin in the distance and being like, there's zero chance
- 8:45we get there today. Like there's no way we get there
- 8:47guys. It's so far away, which I think
- 8:51that's something actually I've gotten a little bit better at.
- 8:54But when you when you see something in the distance, like
- 8:57when you see something a mile of way, a mountain a mile away, a
- 9:00peak a mile away, it looks so far like that's going to take
- 9:04you so long. And it never really takes as
- 9:08long as it looks. I don't know.
- 9:10I mean, just like running a mile doesn't take super long.
- 9:12Obviously on trail it's going to take a little bit longer with
- 9:14gain, but in 15 minutes you could be there.
- 9:17And so that's a little perspective.
- 9:19But I had no trail experience, so I was like that we should
- 9:22just pack it in guys because we ain't getting there.
- 9:24But we got there. Dig Katahdin.
- 9:26That was cool. I remember that night we they
- 9:31must have supplied tents because there was a bunch of us guys
- 9:34sleeping in one tent. I didn't know these guys.
- 9:37We're all slipping in a tent we hiked at and we're probably like
- 9:39dirty, I don't know, like I'm sure there were showers, but we
- 9:42probably weren't like the cleanest.
- 9:44And I remember it was super hot, super humid, muggy.
- 9:47And at one point in the night we just like, I was like, I think
- 9:51we were all kind of like, what are we doing right now?
- 9:53And we just had the, the giggles basically.
- 9:56Like we could not stop laughing about like how crazy, like
- 10:00stupid this situation was. Like it was so hot and
- 10:03uncomfortable and you had no space.
- 10:05And I'm not like super big into like tenting out and I don't
- 10:10sleep good out in the outdoors like that.
- 10:12So I was kind of like out of my comfort zone.
- 10:14And yeah, I just remember that night being like, I, I, I needed
- 10:17to be morning so I can get out of this tent.
- 10:22That's why I remember there. And then the, the last day of
- 10:24the trip, we did white water rafting and I wish I remembered
- 10:28the river that we did the white water rafting for.
- 10:33I mean, it was before the fall semester.
- 10:35So it was like late summer. I, I forget the river, but it
- 10:38was low. Basically it was low.
- 10:40And the whitewater rafting, they kind of talk it up as to being
- 10:44like this crazy thing, like super.
- 10:47And this is the start of the extreme sports talk.
- 10:50They kind of talk it up as being like this crazy, like people are
- 10:53falling off, you know, keep your legs up, you put your leg down,
- 10:56you get caught, you could die. And I'm sure a lot of white
- 11:00water rafting is like that. I'm sure we didn't hit it at a
- 11:03good time, but I remember being very underwhelmed.
- 11:07I wasn't even close to getting thrown off the boat.
- 11:10There were like 2 little sections that were maybe a
- 11:13little bit of white water and the rest was like fairly smooth
- 11:15going. I think one person fell in and I
- 11:17think they wanted to fall in. I'm so I'm just going to chalk
- 11:21it up to a bad time of year because some of those like I do
- 11:24watch whitewater or not watch, but I've seen some stuff where
- 11:27it is like the people in kayaks are going down crazy rivers,
- 11:30high water. It's it is insane and water is
- 11:34scary. Water is very, very scary.
- 11:38I feel like just like swimming a little bit in rivers and even
- 11:42oceans too, and just spending time and like seeing some of
- 11:46there's a big falls, Wildcat falls where near where I kind of
- 11:49grew up. And when that when it rains a
- 11:52lot and the water's pumping it like it is so scary.
- 11:55The amount of volume and force that water has so you don't mess
- 11:58with water. But on that day, I it was not
- 12:02scary. But yeah.
- 12:05So then that kind of got me thinking about extreme sports.
- 12:08I was thinking about what extreme sports or I don't know,
- 12:10is that an extreme sport or extreme activity maybe is the
- 12:13better word. What extreme activities have I
- 12:16done and how would I rank them? So this is kind of like another
- 12:19mini ranking in this episode, but whitewater rafting, I think
- 12:24it's what was the list I have over here.
- 12:26I think it is for. Yeah.
- 12:27No, whitewater rafting is for that.
- 12:29Was these the lowest extreme sport that I've done in my
- 12:33experience. That's going to be #4 #3 And I
- 12:37guess I'll just give you give you guys all this.
- 12:40I've gone whitewater rafting, skydiving, ziplining, where I
- 12:44throw that in there and then parasailing.
- 12:47So I feel like growing up, we all, my parents are pretty good
- 12:50about like taking us on kind of activities like that.
- 12:53And so I've kind of like done all those things with the, the,
- 12:57the skydiving was kind of on my own doing.
- 12:59But yeah, those are the activities.
- 13:01I think white water rafting is still going to be 4 for me #3
- 13:06surprisingly is going to be parasailing.
- 13:09We've gone parasailing a couple times at the Cape at Cape Cod
- 13:15and it's pretty cool. You go out over to Cape Cod Bay
- 13:17and you can see the whole like the top of the arm on the Cape.
- 13:20If you can see that, you can kind of like you go all around
- 13:25this area. So it's like you can see lots of
- 13:27the island. You can see the whole curve.
- 13:28It's very cool. And at first you're kind of
- 13:32looking at the the setup and you're thinking like, this is
- 13:34just like some guy with a boat and he bought some rope and he
- 13:38has a Paris. Like this is not, this doesn't
- 13:40seem there are no safety standards.
- 13:43You know, it's, I'm sure there are, I'm sure.
- 13:45But but like, I don't remember. Like it was kind of like, all
- 13:48right, who's up first? And they just click in, then you
- 13:49go. So it was not like it doesn't
- 13:53feel super safe when you start. But yeah, once you get going,
- 13:57basically the boat just goes and it pulls you up very high.
- 13:59And then once you hit the maximum height or whatever,
- 14:03you're pretty much good. But when when it's it's
- 14:06shocking, when you get up to the height and parasailing, you
- 14:09would think it's kind of like an airplane or like of a car.
- 14:12You roll the window down, it's going fit 30 or 60 or whatever
- 14:15miles an hour. It's very kind of like loud and
- 14:18windy. Every time I've gone
- 14:20parasailing, it's like you're in a movie.
- 14:23It's like the opening scene of a movie.
- 14:25You know, when they do that big back in the day when they did
- 14:27that big like drone shot before we had drums.
- 14:29So it must have been just been cinematic.
- 14:30And it's just like quiet with like a little bit of music, like
- 14:34motivational music and you're just going over the skyline.
- 14:37The sun's coming up. It kind of just like that very
- 14:40quiet, very picturesque, very is this a green screen and and
- 14:46that's it. I wouldn't.
- 14:47So it's not really like super extreme.
- 14:49I would say, I guess landing on the boat back when you're
- 14:53getting reeled in is a little bit extreme, but it doesn't seem
- 14:56super extreme and it seems pretty safe.
- 15:00If you go, it's pretty much just like a swing.
- 15:03Like you know, when you went to like a like a Six Flags or a
- 15:06canopy Lake Park and they had the swing ride, it's pretty much
- 15:09just the same mechanism as a swing ride.
- 15:12You get a bar over you, you get a strap and you're kind of good.
- 15:16So I think the system is good. But if you're kind of like one
- 15:20of those kids that kind of like just like squirm or like my
- 15:23dwarf ham, so you just you just like push his face through cage
- 15:28threw all the cages we bought and he would just get out.
- 15:30If you're kind of like a squirmy little kid that just like pushes
- 15:33the boundaries of like confinement equipment, I feel
- 15:41like you just slip out, you know, But if you're not messing
- 15:44around like that, it's fairly safe.
- 15:46You're just strapped in and you're chilling.
- 15:47And if you let's just say like the one fears, like what if we
- 15:52get detached from this boat? You just glide down because I
- 15:57think the boat is pulling you, but the whole para sail
- 16:00mechanism still works. So really the only I guess, I
- 16:05guess if the para sail itself got messed up, you could you
- 16:08could just start plummeting. Yeah, I guess that would be the
- 16:11one thing. But it it doesn't seem, it seems
- 16:14like there's kind of safety. You know, there's a backup plan,
- 16:17there's a Plan B. If you get detached, you're
- 16:19going to float down. Nice.
- 16:20And, and I think people have actually done this in, in
- 16:22different places. Cape Cod is notorious for their
- 16:26Gray white sharks now. So that's maybe like one thing,
- 16:28Like how what, how much time do I have between the parasail
- 16:33entering Cape Cod Bay and the boat tracking us down?
- 16:36I would assume that the boat is fast enough to just get there.
- 16:40And it's Oh my God, we're so sorry.
- 16:42I can't believe that happened. I'm so glad you're safe.
- 16:43We're going to give your money back.
- 16:45But who knows? A strong wind, what actually
- 16:48would happen? If you're in the para sail and
- 16:51the end of Cape Cod is very narrow, It's only a few miles
- 16:54across. I love running in Cape Cod in
- 16:56the summer because you run to the Oceanside beach and they go
- 16:58to the Bayside. But what if you get a strong
- 17:01wind, some sort of some sort of wind, a strong wind, and it
- 17:06takes you across the island to the Oceanside, then you're
- 17:10screwed because there's seals over there and there's sharks
- 17:12over there. So you don't want that.
- 17:14If you go out to the Bay, like the middle of the Bay, Me and my
- 17:18dad, we used to go fishing out in the middle of the Bay and
- 17:21it's shocking. Those are big waters out there.
- 17:24So who knows, but overall, I think parasailing is is fairly
- 17:28mild and it's very cool. It's a good experience ever to
- 17:30go do it #2 is going to be ziplining as far as extreme and
- 17:36I don't know is ziplining seems a little bit more of like your
- 17:41adventure is chosen for you because the lot you know, you
- 17:45just go on this line and everyone does the same line.
- 17:47You have a different course or whatever.
- 17:49But the thing I I think about ziplining is you can't a lot of
- 17:55the times, one time, 1 zip line, I've only been a couple times,
- 17:57it was foggy because you go to the top of the mountain.
- 18:00It might have been like Dunstock or something.
- 18:02You go to the top of the mountain and it's foggy and you
- 18:04just have to trust that there's nothing, you know, over the drop
- 18:08of the zip line. You have to just trust that the
- 18:10trail is cleared for you. Like you kind of you get a
- 18:13feeling of like, oh man, I'm ripping down this thing.
- 18:16I hope there's not just like a log here for some reason today.
- 18:20That is a little bit of a scary thought.
- 18:22And I remember if one guy from high school, yeah, one guy from
- 18:25high school, I think he broke his ankle actually on a zip
- 18:28line. He was like a basketball player,
- 18:30very, very big guy, like 6, whatever.
- 18:35And I think he hit his ankle on a on a zip line in a broke it.
- 18:38So, so that's why I think zip line is a little bit more
- 18:41extreme. I don't think you have control.
- 18:43I guess you probably do have brakes, but come on, you don't
- 18:46want to hit this. Yeah, I guess you do want to hit
- 18:47the brakes. But it yeah, it just feels like
- 18:50a little bit of like you you're putting your faith that there's
- 18:53no trees around, even though you're bobbing and weaving
- 18:55through all these trees, which is like, I'm sure these guys
- 18:59clear at every whatever, but who knows?
- 19:02In the sky on a parasail, you just like there's nothing in the
- 19:05way. Bird maybe.
- 19:06No, no bird. There's nothing up there.
- 19:09And then last obviously is skydiving.
- 19:11So yeah, when skydiving once, definitely the most extreme.
- 19:17I mean, you're jumping out of a plane.
- 19:19So it's just all the elements are there to be super extreme.
- 19:22One thing that I remember from the skydiving, you're in a
- 19:25plane, you're strapped to. I was strapped to an unknown man
- 19:28that I didn't know, like you're in his crotch kind of thing,
- 19:31which is always just like it puts you at a little bit or who
- 19:34knows for me, you know, I don't think it's anyone's comfortable
- 19:37doing that. Like it puts you in a weird pit
- 19:40situation where you're like you're throwing off your
- 19:42comfort. You're in a plane.
- 19:44What's going on? So I was not comfortable even
- 19:47though, although those people are very nice and they try to
- 19:49like calm you down. It's going to be cool.
- 19:50Done this a million times. This is my 2 millionth jump
- 19:53whatever. So but but you're in a a plane
- 19:57that it's like a plane in a movie.
- 20:00There's no seats, there's nothing in it.
- 20:02It's just like a bench. And the whole, I don't know what
- 20:05is it called the cockpit? No, what's the, not the cockpit
- 20:07like the main thing of the, the plane, you're just, it's just a
- 20:11bench and everyone's lined up and there's nothing else in the
- 20:13plane. And once our people, people
- 20:16start jumping out, I, I remember having a little bit of a weird
- 20:19feeling being like it felt like I almost had to get out of the
- 20:23plane. Like I was nervous to jump, but
- 20:25the plane like people are getting out.
- 20:28There's nothing in it. And I don't, I'm like, wait, is
- 20:30this plane even functional? Is this plane able to land?
- 20:34Like I think I have to get off this plane.
- 20:35It's going down, like kind of thing.
- 20:37I don't know why. So I remember that like being a
- 20:40feeling which I didn't expect. And then, yeah, once you jump,
- 20:43you're just like, you're just in it and you're just like, you
- 20:46know, in your head. It's like crazy, the adrenaline,
- 20:48all the stuff. Once you're falling for like
- 20:503045 seconds, that's when you start thinking, all right, let's
- 20:54hope this thing opens right. You know that obviously they
- 20:56have a couple packs or whatever, but you're just relying on that
- 20:59thing to to open up. And then once it opens up, it's
- 21:01kind of like the parasailing. You're like, you're pretty good.
- 21:04Someone's steering out when that feels even like a little bit
- 21:07easier and, and it feels fairly safe.
- 21:11So, so I would say the skydiving is the most extreme.
- 21:14I I wouldn't do it again. Like maybe I'm not really like,
- 21:19I guess I'm not an adrenaline junkie.
- 21:21I mean, maybe in some ways I am, but Nah, no, I would call myself
- 21:24an adrenaline junkly, a junkie. I don't need to chase that
- 21:27adrenaline again. I'll say that it made you feel
- 21:30weird. Like I remember my, my, I had a
- 21:32little bit of a headache and your stomach kind of hurts just
- 21:35because you go from such high elevation to such low so
- 21:37quickly. The pressure in your head,
- 21:39everything gets messed up. So I remember feeling kind of
- 21:42sick after and and that was it. But I was happy to hit the
- 21:46ground. I had some, they took a video of
- 21:48everybody that I had a video like on our old phone or
- 21:51something. Poof, gone, won't won't capture
- 21:54it again, which won't ever have that again, which is a little
- 21:56bit sad. But yeah, Scott, I was Scott
- 21:59Ivan was cool. So I I'd recommend, you know,
- 22:02all of those sports that anyone who's who's willing.
- 22:07But yeah, that's how I would rank them in terms of like
- 22:09extremeness, in terms of scariness.
- 22:11And that was our little extreme sports side tangent.
- 22:15Now getting back to U Maine, So we did the, yeah, we did this
- 22:19story before going to U Maine. We talked a little bit about
- 22:22like I didn't do a ton of hiking.
- 22:23The one thing that I did do was went to Acadia a couple times.
- 22:28And I remember the first time I went to Acadia, I, what is it?
- 22:32The sandy beach that's very sandy.
- 22:34I think it's called sandy beach or something like that.
- 22:37When you get there and it's like the cliffs and a good day in the
- 22:40ocean and there's the sandy beach and all the colors are
- 22:42great. It was the first time in my life
- 22:45where I was like, this seems straight out of National
- 22:47Geographic magazine. Like this is unbelievable
- 22:51picturesque, every, you know, it's just gorgeous.
- 22:53Like that's obviously why everyone goes there.
- 22:56So I remember being a little bit blown away with that.
- 23:01I've never ran there. Like I did the whole drive
- 23:03around the loop there. I know there's a ton of trails
- 23:05up there, so one day I want to go back and do a running trip up
- 23:09there. And this summer, who knows?
- 23:10So that was kind of that was kind of like the the stuff that
- 23:14I did at U Maine and kind of the outdoor stuff.
- 23:16But after school pretty much. Yeah.
- 23:20I think the year after I graduated school, me and some of
- 23:23the friends that I made-up in up from Maine, we started going to
- 23:27Lake Moosehead for an annual ice fishing trip in February.
- 23:33And it's, it's been something we've done.
- 23:36I think this is our 7th year, so seven straight years, which is,
- 23:39which is very cool. And it's always a trip I look
- 23:42forward to the trip's evolved over the years a little bit.
- 23:46And so I have like a few, a few stories that we'll kind of just
- 23:49like go through, like what I kind of think about.
- 23:51But the main objective, or usually the main objective is to
- 23:54go up there and do a little bit of ice fishing.
- 23:56So Mainers love their ice fishing, love snowmobiling.
- 24:00A lot of people look forward to the winter.
- 24:02And so it's kind of like a big tradition up there and lots of
- 24:05hype behind it. And, and it's a fun activity.
- 24:09It's obviously very cold up there.
- 24:11And they always have ice like in the winter, which is a little
- 24:14bit different from around here. Like sometimes we actually don't
- 24:16have enough ice to go out on lakes all the time.
- 24:18So I think that's why it's a little bit more rooted up there.
- 24:21And Lake Moosehead is, is one of the, I don't know if it has to
- 24:25be one of the best fisheries in Maine and one of the last, I
- 24:30don't know. It just feels it.
- 24:32There's a lot of people who live on the lake.
- 24:34There's a lot of kind of like tourism around it.
- 24:36I I would assume. But it's a total different feel
- 24:39than like a Lake Winnipesaukee or, or one of the big lakes in
- 24:43New Hampshire because it's a little bit more northern, it's
- 24:46more rural. The lake is massive.
- 24:48I think it's bigger than than Winnipesaukee.
- 24:50And that's a huge lake. And there are there are like,
- 24:54still like native landlocked salmon, which is like one of the
- 24:59big things in the trip. But there are species of fish
- 25:02that you cannot catch anywhere else.
- 25:04Like there's native landlocked salmon, which is one of the only
- 25:06places that they still exist where they don't get stalked In
- 25:09New England. There are massive trout, brook
- 25:13trout, lake trout, some of the biggest fish that are caught in
- 25:16the state of Maine in that in that body of water because it's
- 25:20so big, it's so deep to, to 300 feet in some places.
- 25:24And it's like still just feels very wild out there.
- 25:28So it's a really cool place to go.
- 25:30And every, every winter we we go up there and fish.
- 25:34And so the first year we did this trip, I think it was just
- 25:38five of us. I don't know whose idea it was,
- 25:40but I think it was Sawyer's. But we, we went up there and we
- 25:45went up there. We fished so hard.
- 25:48So like ice fishing, especially for salmon, like a lot of people
- 25:52will go out like they'll have shacks on the ice and they kind
- 25:55of go out and they stay most of the day.
- 25:57Some people will do like a it's more of like a pop up tent
- 26:01instead of like the full ice shack, but like Bob house kind
- 26:06of thing. So you could be a little more
- 26:08mobile. Some people don't even go out
- 26:10there with a tent if it's if it's if it's not super cold, but
- 26:15usually so if you have like a big 10 or a nice place, you can
- 26:18stay out there all day. But if you don't like you go out
- 26:21for the morning or the evening. Like those are the best times to
- 26:23fish. And for salmon particularly like
- 26:25the morning is the best time, like right after sunrise.
- 26:29So we for four straight days we got out there in the dark and
- 26:34set up and fished hard for salmon and we killed it that
- 26:38first year. We were catching big salmon like
- 26:41the whole morning, running around, setting our traps,
- 26:44getting fish and it was really cool.
- 26:46And also this is back and I was still drinking.
- 26:50We just were drinking a ton. No sleep.
- 26:53Like I think that first trip I got 2 hours of sleep each night
- 26:57for for four straight days and we just fished super hard and
- 27:01just destroyed our bodies like just playing games, whatever.
- 27:04The whole a whole a classic like guys weekend.
- 27:09So it was super fun and one of the places like I'm not going to
- 27:14say where we fish, you know, I'm not going to use the other way.
- 27:17But we we go by like we usually stay in Greenville or Rockwood.
- 27:21And one of the big features up there is Mount Tineo.
- 27:25So it's not a huge mountain. This is probably not a mountain
- 27:29that's on someone's radar, but as far as picturesque views in
- 27:35the wilderness that I've seen, being under Mount Keneo, looking
- 27:40up at the face of it is just one of the best pictures that I've
- 27:44seen ever. Like I've been on all the
- 27:46mountains now in New Hampshire, been on trails, seen different
- 27:49things. It is Acadia like we were
- 27:52talking about. Mount Keneo is awesome and it's
- 27:54pretty much if you look at in the map, Google Mount Keneo.
- 27:58If you look at it, it's like some sort of tectonic plates or
- 28:01something happened where just a big Ridge came out of nowhere
- 28:06and it formed this mountain in the middle of the lake on an
- 28:08island. And what happens, it literally
- 28:10just looks like it was lifted up from the ground.
- 28:13And so there's like a couple 100 feet rock face that just is
- 28:17overhanging the lake by a few 100 feet.
- 28:20And then below the lake, it's 200 feet deep, like 10 feet
- 28:24offshore, maybe you know, 50 feet offshore.
- 28:27It's just straight down and the view going under it.
- 28:31So if if you're on the ice, like on a snowmobile, whatever,
- 28:34driving under, it's awesome if you're on a boat.
- 28:36I've been there during the summer on a boat looking at it
- 28:38and it's awesome. It's just a super cool place to
- 28:41go to. I think the view on top would
- 28:43probably be like a good Lakeview, maybe maybe something
- 28:48to like a mount major or somewhere around the I don't
- 28:51know if the view on top of the mountain is anything crazy, but
- 28:54the view under that rock face is unbelievable.
- 28:57The colors in it. I don't know what kind of rock
- 28:59that is. The colors are like crazy.
- 29:02You can't believe it. You're going to look at a
- 29:04picture and be like, that's cool, but it's not When you're
- 29:05there in person, it's it's insane.
- 29:08It's just one of those things you got to stop and look at.
- 29:10So that's a cool feature. And there's a trail to the top
- 29:13of Mount Keneo. I've guys, I've never summited
- 29:16Mount Keneo. We're just too busy fishing,
- 29:19doing everything like, and I just don't, you know, busy, busy
- 29:21up there. So I haven't made the time to
- 29:23get out there. I don't think it's super popular
- 29:25to hike it. You have to cross the lake.
- 29:27So I think once or twice I've seen people with snowshoes
- 29:31walking across the lake to go climb it, but it's not something
- 29:34that gets stomped out a lot. But I have thought like, oh, it
- 29:37would be cool to go get that, that Strava crown on Kineo.
- 29:40And I remember one time I actually looked on Strava and
- 29:43it's, it's actually pretty fast. And so it's not something like I
- 29:47could not do it if, if it is not like like the trail isn't
- 29:52usually super packed out. So it's like, I don't even know
- 29:54if you could do it in the winter.
- 29:55So maybe this summer I got to go up there.
- 29:58You, you would kayak or boat across the lake, maybe triathlon
- 30:01across the lake, swim across and then run Keneo.
- 30:04But, but it's very cool. And as far as other mountains in
- 30:07that area, it's, it's a little bit, it's, it's unique northern
- 30:14Maine. There's actually a lot of
- 30:15mountains that are that are, you know, it's kind of in they're
- 30:20not as hiking mountains as more of like, you know, they're in
- 30:22these big industrial forests in Maine.
- 30:25And a lot of them do have trails, but it's like the big
- 30:29woods of Maine up there and they're just kind of in the
- 30:32middle of nowhere and they only people get out there are like
- 30:35hunters, loggers, people like that, like hikers don't get out
- 30:38a lot and it's cool. So in the White Mountains you
- 30:41have, obviously you have mountains everywhere.
- 30:44It's like just peak, peak, high, peak, High Peak, just everywhere
- 30:47surrounding you. But up there it's almost like
- 30:50longer stretches of flatter woods, so you can see forever.
- 30:55And then in every little distance there's a couple
- 30:59mountains that that poke out pretty good.
- 31:00Nothing crazy, maybe 2 to 3000 feet, maybe 3500, not 4000
- 31:05footers, but they just poke out enough to be like and, and it's
- 31:09all alone. So it's not like mountains
- 31:11everywhere. It's like couple mountains here.
- 31:13Oh, what are those? I want to go couple mountains
- 31:14here. What are those couple mountains
- 31:16over there? What what are those like?
- 31:17And it's all kind of spread out. And so it's really cool and I
- 31:21would love to, I mean, I'd love to have a little place up there
- 31:23that he could kind of, I don't know, I guess we already have a
- 31:27little place more in central Maine.
- 31:29But yeah, I would like to spend more time and do more running up
- 31:32there maybe in the summer sometime.
- 31:34But it's super nice. And Greenville is right near the
- 31:39AT, So that's pretty much the the section of the 100 mile
- 31:42wilderness route. So it's definitely sparked my
- 31:46interest interest in the 100 mile wilderness route.
- 31:49I think the terrain up there is super cool.
- 31:52It's like it's just a different vibe.
- 31:53It's it's very big woodsy feels up there.
- 31:59So yeah, the 100 mile wilderness honestly is on my radar just
- 32:02because it's so cool and it does look very intriguing.
- 32:06But the thing with the 100 mile wilderness is it's point to
- 32:08point and it's it's you need a lot of support.
- 32:12Like the getting support at Rd. Crossings is not kind of like
- 32:16something around here. It's it's takes more effort,
- 32:19it's more remote and it would just be more effort and planning
- 32:23and needing support. So it's something a little bit a
- 32:26little bit maybe harder to pull off as far as logistics, but one
- 32:29day I would love to do it because the area up there is
- 32:31just it's just so awesome. So Northern Maine, if you
- 32:34haven't been out on Northern Maine, you got to get out on
- 32:37northern Maine because it is it is really a gem up there.
- 32:40So, yeah, that was kind of like the main, I guess some other
- 32:44stories we need. Yeah.
- 32:45Like, like I said, we used to like fish really hard.
- 32:47I feel like each year we we spend a little bit less time
- 32:50fishing and a little bit more time just like hanging out or,
- 32:53you know, sleeping a little bit more like hanging out with
- 32:55buddies, grabbing food, stuff like that.
- 32:59Yeah. And there's, we've had a lot of
- 33:00good times over the years. Like we always bring a bunch of,
- 33:02you know, we do. It's like snowmobiling.
- 33:04We play lots of games. So we we invented a couple games
- 33:07up there. Rock Golf Ice hole from this
- 33:10year. We play a ton of code names.
- 33:13If you guys, I don't know if you guys have played code days, but
- 33:15we get we get deep into code names and yeah, I had there was
- 33:20a malicious attack against me in code names this year, which I
- 33:24don't. Maybe this is not like one of
- 33:26the stores engineer. No, it was code names is like a,
- 33:30it's like a word game and you, you, you give clues to your
- 33:34partner and there's a timer and it's very like it's hard because
- 33:38all the words are the same. You have to give a clue that
- 33:40like helps your team get your words and not the other person's
- 33:42words. So it's it's really hard if you
- 33:44played it. Giving clues can be hard.
- 33:46And I am notoriously a fast clue giver.
- 33:49I just, I just go with my gut and some people take a lot about
- 33:52the time. I'm not going to name names.
- 33:54I'm not going to name names, so I'm not going to name names.
- 33:59Some people take a lot of time. So, you know, sometimes you're
- 34:02sitting there and finally, like, all right, you got to have you
- 34:05got to pick a word here, put the timer down.
- 34:07So the timer is kind of like a, it's a, if it's getting too big,
- 34:11you, you put it down. And I, I never get the timer put
- 34:17against me because I'm, I'm saying my words quick.
- 34:20But at the end of a game, they had one card left.
- 34:24So basically they're going to win.
- 34:26I have two cards very hard. There's a, there's a death word,
- 34:31my 2 words and you got to combine it and I know this is
- 34:34the last chance. I haven't taken any time yet.
- 34:36And immediately, I think for 30 seconds he would 30 seconds
- 34:42immediately flips it on me and I just honestly, I stopped
- 34:45thinking I was like, dude, this is this is crazy.
- 34:48I take no time. You take so much time on every
- 34:50term. So I every single turn.
- 34:53That's a crazy movie. Just did you just this is for
- 34:55the whole game. If any, if there's any time for
- 34:58one person to get time to think, it is for the game.
- 35:02This is for the game. Let the guy think about a good
- 35:04word. This is malicious.
- 35:06This is the whole fun of the game.
- 35:08It's not fun when you're giving out two word clues every round,
- 35:11taking forever to think about it.
- 35:13One word clues after sitting there for 2 minutes.
- 35:15This is for the game. I'm saying sploosh for five.
- 35:19My teammates hate it, but we're about to win.
- 35:21I just need, I need a couple minutes here to think about a
- 35:24good word for my 2 abstract things without getting the death
- 35:27word. And you put the timer on me and
- 35:29it was a fast timer this year. This timer was like a 22nd
- 35:32timer. And so I used the whole time to
- 35:34go ahead Sawyer and and then I, I said a bad Rd.
- 35:38We didn't win and then after that I was like, this is it?
- 35:42I mean, this is the tone for the weekend.
- 35:44We are I am being malicious with this time or the rest of the
- 35:48weekend. So anytime there was a big
- 35:50decision it you would just time it on people, which just I just
- 35:54think it ruins the fun of the game.
- 35:56If we want to play like that from the beginning, I'm cool
- 35:59with it because I think I'm a quick a clue giver.
- 36:02But if we're giving everyone else time and then one at the
- 36:06end of the game, you put you flip the thing.
- 36:09Crazy, crazy. I didn't get fired up right
- 36:11there. Yeah, I got yeah, it was fun.
- 36:13It was a fun game. I didn't get too fired up there.
- 36:16Yeah, that was crazy. So.
- 36:18But then it became a joke for the weekend, like just flipping
- 36:20the timer on everything people does.
- 36:23And I did flip, you know, so whatever.
- 36:26But we play a lot of code names, play a ton of games like that.
- 36:30Ice, ice, Rock You basically, I'll just tell you no.
- 36:35Rock, rock, rock golf. This how you play rock golf.
- 36:39One person has a stone. Wait, is it a stone?
- 36:44No. Sometimes we use a water bottle.
- 36:45Actually, it doesn't matter what it is, but you take, it's like
- 36:47bocce. You take something, you throw
- 36:49it. You have to be on a lake or a
- 36:51pond with some jagged ice, some open ice in some snow banks,
- 36:56some drifts. Those are the best conditions.
- 36:57Lots of variables. Somebody throws it and you each
- 37:01have to find two rocks along the bank.
- 37:05And with that or no, we found a bunch of lot rocks and then we
- 37:08drafted the rocks. Yeah, that's how we do it.
- 37:10Then we draft rocks. What rocks are good?
- 37:11You want a small rock, you want a big rock.
- 37:13So one person throws a thing and then you play bocce, whoever
- 37:16gets close. And you would think this it can
- 37:20be insane. So that's one of the games we
- 37:23played. And then this game, this time we
- 37:25played ice hole. It's kind of like it was kind of
- 37:27like curling and corn hole together.
- 37:29You drill a hole in the ice and then you play, you play curling
- 37:35and it's super fun, super fun. And you can set up a course.
- 37:39You had some snow bank little bumpers to do it on.
- 37:41And so we do a lot of like that stuff now, like more like fun
- 37:44stuff. We catch a few fish.
- 37:45We got a few fish this year. I, I caught actually a Big Lake
- 37:49trout. I got a 4 1/2 LB lake trout.
- 37:52And at the end of the day, the biologist, there was a fish
- 37:56biologist going out there collecting data.
- 37:58So he came over to us and he was kind of talking, measuring fish,
- 38:01doing, you know, taking all the stuff.
- 38:03And he was saying and he said it was like, oh, that, you know,
- 38:06this is the biggest lake trout I've seen in a few weeks and
- 38:10which is kind of like, oh, nice, nice, nice.
- 38:13It was, it was like a nice fish, but it wasn't anything like
- 38:16super crazy. But then come to find out he
- 38:18just started this winter. So we're like, we're like, does
- 38:20that give you, you know, this? He hasn't seen too much, But no,
- 38:24he said a few weeks. So we were talking about this.
- 38:27This is a little fishing hack for anybody out there fishing.
- 38:30You catch a fish 4 1/2 lbs, four and a half pounds in person.
- 38:35That was my lake trout, 5 1/2 lbs.
- 38:37On TV or YouTube, if I recorded it, I just, you just say 5 1/2
- 38:41lbs. And on the radio, on a podcast,
- 38:446 1/2 lbs. Yeah, actually I caught a 6 1/2
- 38:46LB lake trout. That was a joke.
- 38:48I heard that was that was just kind of dying laughing because
- 38:50like, you know, you kind of make up, you make the story, you
- 38:53build it up a little bit and on TV you can see it, but you can't
- 38:57tell exactly how big it is. So you held it out a little bit
- 38:59and you can say it's bigger than it is.
- 39:00And the radio, you can't see anything.
- 39:02So you just say whatever you want.
- 39:04So we were kind of say joking that joking about that this
- 39:08weekend. But yeah, it was a good trip.
- 39:11It was a fun trip. I look forward to it every year.
- 39:14And this year actually, I will be honest, I I got some runs in
- 39:17up there, which was which was good for me.
- 39:19So because I got to, I got to stay training up there.
- 39:25I got big goals, guys, I got big goals and I got to go after it.
- 39:29But yeah, that was kind of like the main talk, some main
- 39:32stories. I think I got to spend more time
- 39:35on the trails up in Maine. I really do think they're
- 39:37awesome mountains up there. Probably slept on underrated.
- 39:41But next offers we're going to do is tracking my sleep.
- 39:46So I want to talk about the the sleep tracking.
- 39:48I pretty much just bought a a sleep tracker recently that I
- 39:53just wear during during a bed. You know, I have my GPS watch.
- 39:57It's a Garmin, but it's like too clunky.
- 40:00It's big and I don't I don't really think the sensors are
- 40:02great and I don't think Garmin specializes in the sleep stuff.
- 40:05So I bought a sleep strap. I bought a whoop.
- 40:10Excuse me, should I do I have to cut that narrow?
- 40:13I bought a whoop. So I've been wearing that to bed
- 40:17to just track sleep. And for a long time I didn't
- 40:20want to track my sleep because if I sleep bad, if I don't get a
- 40:26lot of sleep, I know it. I don't need somebody telling,
- 40:29hey, you recovered slowly. You slept bad last night.
- 40:32It's like, no, I know I'm tired. I know I feel like crap.
- 40:35Like I don't need you telling me this.
- 40:37And you know, sometimes it gets in your brain like if you had a
- 40:40bad, if you have a bad HRV or something, you're like, oh,
- 40:44maybe I shouldn't do a workout. But if it's the only time that
- 40:46week you do a workout, it's like kind of like messes with your
- 40:48mind a little bit. So I'm kind of like, you know,
- 40:51just sleep, sleep the best you can and don't worry about it.
- 40:55Don't track track about it. That was my thoughts for a long
- 40:58time. But I really do think like sleep
- 41:01is so important. I'm really trying to dial in
- 41:04everything this year and like moving forward, you know, sleep
- 41:06training, nutrition, everything, really kind of get the most out
- 41:10of myself. And I do think tracking the
- 41:14sleep is, is going to help me in the long run get better sleep.
- 41:18Now, at first I was trying some, you know, there's lots of hacks,
- 41:22asleep hacks, what you should do to sleep better.
- 41:24And I'll go through some of the ones that I've been doing, but
- 41:27I, I, it's hard. Some of the things I was trying,
- 41:31I didn't know if it was helping. So I was like, you know, what
- 41:34this is, this is going to give me some data on to, you know, if
- 41:37I try something to sleep better, is this working or is this not
- 41:40working? So that was, that was kind of
- 41:42like one of the big reasons to get me this, the, the strap.
- 41:45And I've been liking it so far. I think it's good.
- 41:48I think it's actually reinforced a lot of what I thought and what
- 41:51I'm feeling more than it's hurt me.
- 41:54So there's been actually more days where I think, oh, I
- 41:57actually got decent sleep last night and I, I recovered good
- 42:01where I thought I, I maybe felt a little bit more tired or, or
- 42:04lethargic. I'm like, Oh no, I'm good to
- 42:06train, like I'm good to go here. So it's actually, that was
- 42:09something I was not expecting. The, the strap was fine to wear
- 42:13to bed. I, I, I was thinking it would
- 42:16kind of be annoying. I've already gotten used to it.
- 42:18So I don't think that that's super annoying.
- 42:20And so I really think it's, it's helped me and I don't think it's
- 42:23something that's going to hold me back.
- 42:24I think it's only going to be data that I can use to help me
- 42:26get better. And so I'm, I'm in on it.
- 42:28I'm wearing this thing from here on out.
- 42:30I'm, I'm wearing, I'm tracking my sleep.
- 42:33I until unless things start going bad, I'm going to start
- 42:36tracking my sleep. So I think it's a good thing to
- 42:39have some of the things that I've tried to get my sleep
- 42:42better. The one obvious one that
- 42:46everyone kind of knows, everyone says is the blue light before
- 42:49bed. I've really been trying to all
- 42:52screens, phone, computer, laptop, everything off about an
- 42:57hour, like 40, you know, half hour, 45 minutes to an hour
- 43:01ideally before I go to bed. I've been trying that and I've
- 43:05been sleeping pretty good. Sometimes like this actually,
- 43:09like sad to say, sometimes I feel like scrolling on my phone
- 43:13a little bit before bed can actually help me fall asleep.
- 43:16But I, I don't think like all the science says it doesn't.
- 43:19So that was kind of one thing where I was like, I don't know,
- 43:21like I feel like it helps me sleep, but I what I actually
- 43:24have determined, I think looking at your phone before bed, it
- 43:30doesn't help you get better sleep.
- 43:31It helps you fall asleep because we are addicted to, to yo using
- 43:36our phone and so if we don't use our phone for a while before
- 43:39bed, you have almost withdrawal symptoms from your phone that I
- 43:44don't this is what I feel like. So it took me a while to break
- 43:49the pattern of being on the phone before bed and I, I, I
- 43:52really been trying to get off the phone more and so that's
- 43:54always like kind of like a fight.
- 43:55I'm sure it is with everybody, but I feel like I'm getting to a
- 43:59place where I don't, you know, my bedtime routine, it does not
- 44:02include the phone. So I'm kind of over that.
- 44:04And now I think it does it, it probably does help me sleep
- 44:06better. So yeah, if you're, if you're
- 44:09saying getting off the phone before bed doesn't help me sleep
- 44:11better, I would challenge you to, to get unaddicted to your
- 44:15phone during your night time routine for a few weeks and then
- 44:19see when you don't need it to fall asleep.
- 44:21Then see if you think it helps your sleep.
- 44:23That was #1 the other one too is food.
- 44:27Eating food right, right before you go to bed is not good for
- 44:29you. I think again, this is one that
- 44:32like for me, it's like I sleep good.
- 44:33Like when I have a full stomach, I don't think I really like I,
- 44:37I, I used to always eat five eggs plus and an apple before
- 44:42bed every night, like right within 1/2 hour going to sleep.
- 44:47And so I was, I was kind of like, you know, I'm so busy,
- 44:49like I can only eat X amount. Like this is a good eating
- 44:51routine for me. It's something that works if I
- 44:53go to the gym late at night, I just can't change it and there's
- 44:56nothing I can do. I chalked it up to there's
- 44:57nothing I can do, but I've reworked my brain a little bit
- 45:01and I've thought, no, like there's there are other ways to
- 45:05get your food in. There's other ways that you
- 45:07could schedule your training. If this is something that
- 45:10actually is going to help me sleep better and recover better,
- 45:14you should be doing it like it is something it it's you should
- 45:17be doing it. This is not a supplement.
- 45:18This is not somebody something selling somebody is selling you.
- 45:22This is research back data in a free habit, habit that you can
- 45:29do to improve your recovery. Do you really want to do you
- 45:32really want to get the the most out of yourself?
- 45:35If your answer is yes, you got to try it out, at least try it
- 45:37out with data. So I've been trying it out and
- 45:40again, it took me a little bit to adjust.
- 45:44But once you have a new sleeping routine, once that kind of it
- 45:49takes a little bit, there's a little bit of friction it felt
- 45:51like for me. But once you flip that switch,
- 45:54I, the routine feels good and I've been sleeping better
- 45:58overall. And so I, I eat my last bit of
- 46:02food about, you know, 2 hours before I go to sleep, maybe 2, a
- 46:07little bit more, 2/2 and 1/2. And people say longer is more.
- 46:11Two to three hours is the most that I can do right now to open
- 46:17minded right now, but it's a huge improvement from what I was
- 46:20doing. So I'm going to keep, keep it up
- 46:22and keep doing that and see how it feels.
- 46:23So that's been really helping. And then the last thing I, you
- 46:27know, waking up to go to the bathroom, I think this is like,
- 46:30you know, everyone just does it in a lot of the times, or maybe
- 46:34most people and a lot of the times it's within your R.E.M.
- 46:37cycles. Like I'm not into the full
- 46:39science of it, but it's something that like can disrupt
- 46:42my sleep. It's something where if I get up
- 46:45and I start thinking about something it, it can negatively
- 46:48impact me. So what I trying to do, and this
- 46:51is the same thing with eating. I just try to, I try to keep the
- 46:54same liquid intake, water intake, but I move it up in the
- 46:57day and 7:00 I stop drinking. Now I've noticed my mouth will
- 47:03get a little bit dry or days I feel like a little bit more
- 47:05dehydrated. I I kind of need a little bit of
- 47:08water. So I'll just tiny sips.
- 47:10They say the sips is going to be better than gulps.
- 47:14So I do tiny sips just to wet the mouth and get me over.
- 47:17And then I'll put a lot of salt in it before I go to bed because
- 47:20whenever I wake up in the night, I will take a little sip of
- 47:22water. If there's salt in it, it's
- 47:24going to help you retain the water better than just straight
- 47:27water. So, and I think that that's
- 47:31helped a good amount too. And some nights I almost feel
- 47:34like I'm a little bit dehydrated, but it's helpful
- 47:36with my recovery. And then if I just rehydrate in
- 47:39the morning, like fast in the morning, like I'm drinking more
- 47:41right when I wake up, then I think it's fine.
- 47:44So those are the things that I've been trying for sleep.
- 47:47They have been working. I think it's hard to implement
- 47:50everything they tell you to implement online, but I think
- 47:53it's really worth it. And I think if you, if you
- 47:56really want to get the best out of yourself, you should be doing
- 47:59everything you can to recover. A lot of people will put X
- 48:02amount of volume, X amount of miles, hours in.
- 48:05I'm training super hard. But if you are not protecting
- 48:08your night time routine for sleep and getting good
- 48:11consistent sleep, then you're just leaving games on the table.
- 48:14And that's something you got to be OK with and I'm not OK with.
- 48:17So I'm trying to fix it. So that's the sleeping thing.
- 48:21That's my sleeping take. So if you guys have any tricks,
- 48:25I, I dabbled a little bit with like magnesium.
- 48:29I think supplements are kind of like a, a little bit of slippery
- 48:32slope as far as sleep for me right now.
- 48:35But I, I'm taking a step at a time trying to get better sleep
- 48:38and track of my sleep. So that's from up with the sleep
- 48:40stuff. We got two more things.
- 48:42So we're going to do the top three chips and then we're going
- 48:44to do motivational minute. So we'll start with the top
- 48:46three chips. Is this my order?
- 48:49Did I write it down in my order? Let me review.
- 48:51Let me review. Yeah, this is the order.
- 48:53Yeah, this is the order. My top three chips.
- 48:56And I am not a chip snack person.
- 48:59And, you know, people who know me can attest when I go to the
- 49:02grocery store, I don't, I don't buy any snacks really.
- 49:05I don't really buy any snacks. I just buy Whole Foods, fruits,
- 49:09meat, you know, like I, I really I never go to the chip aisle.
- 49:13Back in the day, though, I loved I love snacks.
- 49:16I'm a big salt guy. Probably still salt over sweet
- 49:20savory. I love chips.
- 49:22I love snacks. So here are going to be my top
- 49:24three chips. Oh, I got something going on
- 49:28here. My number, no work in reverse.
- 49:32Honorable mention. I think honorable mention for
- 49:35these chips, I don't know how I feel about it.
- 49:38It's almost like one of my original longest lasting good
- 49:41relationship, but I don't have a good number one flavor for this
- 49:46chip that put it in the top three.
- 49:51So it's kind of something that I grappled with, but I had to give
- 49:54honorable mention Pringles. I mean, I remember as a kid on
- 49:58the beach went up sake licking the salt, licking the red stuff
- 50:02off of pizza Pringles and then putting it, putting them in my
- 50:06mouth like a duck quacking and eating those things down happy
- 50:09as a clam and then repeating that Pringles are awesome.
- 50:13The original Pringles are really, really good.
- 50:15Like they're they're amazing. Like even if I have a Pringle
- 50:18now, like they're amazing, they're just not, they're not
- 50:21there. Sour cream and onion, that's
- 50:23probably my favorite flavour. But I think sour cream and onion
- 50:29laser may be a little bit high. Yeah.
- 50:32I think sour cream, sour cream and onion stacks may be better
- 50:37than sour cream and onion Pringles.
- 50:39And and that wouldn't be a top three chip God, but sour cream
- 50:42and Pringles are so good. Can I, should I?
- 50:45No, no, oh, I don't know. No my #3 so that's where I have
- 50:50it. So they're in the honor roll
- 50:52mention Pringles are goated, but not the top three.
- 50:58My #3 this is, I think this chip is going to be in everybody's
- 51:05top 390% of people's top three, one flavor or another.
- 51:09And for me, what the one flavor is just it's, it's good enough
- 51:13to get there. And I actually think that I may
- 51:15have the least, I may have a the lower favored flavor as my
- 51:21favorite, but I'm going to roll with it.
- 51:23This, That's the cool ranch Dorito.
- 51:26I mean, Doritos are just electric.
- 51:27The cool ranch is electric. I love a folded cool ranch with
- 51:31like double the seasoning. You don't know how it got double
- 51:34the seasoning. You don't know how it got
- 51:35folded, but you love that it's that it's that way and just
- 51:39putting that down electric. So cool Ranch Trudeau's 3 #2
- 51:45this is 1. I don't know if it's I don't
- 51:47know if this is Speaking of Maine.
- 51:48I don't know if this is AI don't know if this is a main thing.
- 51:53I don't. So a lot of people, if you're
- 51:54not from Maine, you may sleep on this.
- 51:56But if you're if you listen to this whole podcast, maybe you
- 51:58are from Maine or you're more tendencies towards Maine.
- 52:00The all seasons Humpty Dumpty Chip.
- 52:04Oh man, oh man. I don't know what the seasonings
- 52:08are, but they got all of them on there.
- 52:10Humpty Dumpty's are electric. That ship is so good.
- 52:14It's if you haven't tried it, you have to get to the store
- 52:16today. I know it's at market baskets.
- 52:18Humpty Dumpty's all seasoning, maybe convince someone else to
- 52:22buy it and then so you can just have a couple because if you
- 52:24buy, you're going to eat the whole bag.
- 52:25And if that throws you off your training for the week, that's
- 52:27not what I'm here trying to do. But I think you need to try the
- 52:30chip. So if you got to outsource your
- 52:32chip so you can only actually get to do that.
- 52:36Humpty Dumpty and my third favorite chip.
- 52:40My first favorite chip. Sorry, first favorite chip.
- 52:43These are all so good too. It's kind of like hard to, but
- 52:45my third favorite chip is the salt and vinegar Cape Cod potato
- 52:51chip. Some people like salt and
- 52:53vinegar, some people don't. I think the flavor is just, Oh
- 52:57my gosh, I would eat salt and vinegar Cape Cod potato chips
- 53:00until my mouth is bleeding. Like you know how you eat too
- 53:03many of them and your mouth gets sore from the fire and the
- 53:06flavor that is salt and vinegar. I used to love that.
- 53:11Oh my God. I remember in college I would
- 53:12get salt potatoes, these chips all the time, just eat them
- 53:16non-stop. I couldn't stop.
- 53:17I could not stop eating the salt and vinegar Cape Cod potato
- 53:20chips. The Cape Cod is just the perfect
- 53:22potato chip. It's very it's crunchy, it's
- 53:25big. I love Cape Cod and I love salt
- 53:27and vinegar. That's my number one as I don't
- 53:31eat chips. But one thing I do do I have
- 53:34been doing recently salt and vinegar almonds, who it's almost
- 53:39like the vessel for salt and vinegar doesn't matter.
- 53:44The salt and vinegar is so powerful and just it's Oh my
- 53:48God, it's addicting. You just start eating one.
- 53:49You're just like, you can't have one.
- 53:51You can't have one. If you have one, you're super
- 53:52strong. Can't have one.
- 53:54If you can go and eat 1 salt and vinegar potato chip, one Humpty
- 53:58Dumpty all season and you can do that and just eat one of them
- 54:02and then put the bag down for the rest of the day.
- 54:05Strongest person on earth, but OK, That was that was my chip
- 54:10tape. We haven't done a food one in a
- 54:11while. So we got back to the roots a
- 54:13little bit. We did a food.
- 54:16Oh, no, not like this. We did a not like this.
- 54:20My phone's not like this. I haven't been doing the sheet
- 54:23as much because I've been having more notes for some of these
- 54:25podcasts. I don't know how I feel about
- 54:27that. I really love my sheet, but
- 54:31sometimes if I'm busy and I didn't have time to write the
- 54:33sheet, but like Andrew, it only takes 5 minutes to write on a
- 54:35sheet. Oh God, but I have my phone.
- 54:39But I do remember the motivational minute.
- 54:41So we're going to end this episode today with the
- 54:43motivational minute. Haven't done this in a while.
- 54:47We had a couple good ones. Sometimes they go over the top
- 54:50on this, sometimes the same, the same, say the same stuff over
- 54:53and over again. But I think it's it's it's worth
- 54:56saying. But today's motivational minute
- 54:59inspired by Dustin Poirier, UFC fighter.
- 55:02He always had the hashtag, hashtag paid in full always and
- 55:07all this stuff. He had a bunch of different
- 55:09sayings, but that was one of the things that he always posted
- 55:11paid in full. And I saw it a couple times
- 55:13recently again and again. And I just, I love that hashtag.
- 55:19And part of you guys are like, oh, Andrew, you're just selling
- 55:23out, trying to do the pot. You're throwing your own stuff
- 55:26on the website. All this thing, the coaching,
- 55:28all this thing, you just want to get paid.
- 55:29You just want to get paid now, don't you?
- 55:31No, I actually think that quote is like the reverse.
- 55:35What what it that quote means to me is paid in full.
- 55:41Obviously Dustin Poirier is one of the top guys in the sport and
- 55:44probably has lots of money and all those all these different
- 55:46things, but he's somebody that people look up to.
- 55:49He's accomplished. He's climbed the mountains, he's
- 55:51conquered. He's done it for a long time.
- 55:53He's one of the goats. Everyone loves him.
- 55:54Respect. Just a a, a, a true GOAT
- 55:59athletes. Mount Rushmore.
- 56:02I don't know Mount Rushmore of, of UFC Rush for his division,
- 56:06what, you know, Hall of Fame UFC guy.
- 56:09And I think for me, when I hear that and see what he's been
- 56:12through, the wars he's been through, the stuff that he's
- 56:14dealt with, the things he's talked about, it just reminds me
- 56:17of the amount of effort and sacrifice, blood, sweat and
- 56:22tears that he has probably put into the game.
- 56:25I don't even know. It's probably way more than I
- 56:27think. But all that, that he has put
- 56:29into it to be #1 it's so easy to see people online or see people
- 56:34doing something you want to do or see people, whatever, and
- 56:38just think the kind of the must be nicer or, or oh, I could do
- 56:41that or oh, blah, blah, blah, all these things.
- 56:45And, and the thing that you don't see is the massive amount
- 56:49of work, uncomprehensible work that they have done to get
- 56:54there. And some of it's jeans, some of
- 56:57it's luck, some of it's all these things.
- 56:59And people like like to kind of poke and prod at people and say,
- 57:02oh, it's only because you did this, because of this, you do
- 57:04that because that oh, I could, oh, I could this if I had that.
- 57:07And it's like all of that is so if I hear someone start talking
- 57:10about that, I just, I just kind of like, I, I don't, I do not
- 57:14mess with that anymore because all of these people who achieve
- 57:18greatness put in more work than you could even fathom.
- 57:23And the more that I kind of like talk to these people and kind of
- 57:26start to go down some of the paths that I'm branching out
- 57:28into, it just takes way more work than whatever you're doing.
- 57:34It takes so much more work than what you were doing to get what
- 57:37you want. That's like the brutal truth.
- 57:39It takes more work to get what you to to get what you want than
- 57:43you think by a landslide. And So what do you have to do?
- 57:47If you want to be paid in full, You got to put in the work.
- 57:51You have to do it. And I think an endurance
- 57:54running, this is a disclaimer, especially as an endurance
- 57:56coach, this is a big disclaimer. This does not mean go and train
- 58:0020-30 hours. Do not train like Christian
- 58:02Blumenfeld 30 billion hours a week.
- 58:04Do not train like these top athletes, do not run 150 miles a
- 58:08week like some of these runners. It does not mean that because a
- 58:11lot of people would just break them.
- 58:13It means maximize your potential and what you're doing today.
- 58:18And that is training properly, training with a structured plan
- 58:22to get to get closer to your goal.
- 58:25I would say get faster, but my goal is to get faster.
- 58:27Other people have different goals.
- 58:28It's a different goal. But your plan should be getting
- 58:31closer to your goal, right? It should be a structural plan
- 58:34to get closer to your goal. And every day you should be
- 58:38figuring out a way to maximize your output.
- 58:42And so if you can't train X amount with getting hurt, wow,
- 58:46what can I do with recovery? What can I eat more?
- 58:49How can I sleep better, get more recovery?
- 58:51How can I stay consistent? How can I try a new stimulus or
- 58:54a new training route or a new program or a new workout that's
- 58:57going to get me gains that I have been missing?
- 58:59You, you need to everyday be like fiercely interrogating
- 59:04yourself in your program and what you're doing and say, how
- 59:08can you get better? Challenge yourself to get better
- 59:10because I'm telling you, especially in the trail of trail
- 59:13run this this world of trail running, ultra running, mountain
- 59:16running, the sports growing, people are going harder, people
- 59:19are getting more scientific, people are putting in more work
- 59:22than you. And if you are not trying to
- 59:26maximize yourself every single day, you're going to get swept
- 59:30over by these guys and these girls who are putting in this
- 59:34work and, and doing it's, it's, it's getting so competitive.
- 59:37And if you are not doing every single thing to can't to get
- 59:40better, don't expect to climb whatever mountain or or peak or
- 59:44try to get to wherever you want to get to without the work.
- 59:47And yeah, like I said, it's really just looking, looking
- 59:51inward and saying, what are you not doing?
- 59:55And there's lots of different areas to improve.
- 59:56Guys. It's, it's fast, it's strength
- 59:58work, it's mobility. It's, it's, it's all this pre
- 1:00:02hab stuff. It's rehab stuff.
- 1:00:04It's staying consistent. It's saying no to things that
- 1:00:07are getting you away from your goal or not aligned with your
- 1:00:10values. It is are is your mindset good?
- 1:00:14A lot of people train good. Oh, I'm training good.
- 1:00:16I recover good. I sleep good.
- 1:00:17What's your mindset like? Have you been, have you been
- 1:00:21like meditation? I feel like is a huge.
- 1:00:24I wouldn't say like you need to meditate but what is your
- 1:00:26mindset? How often are you thinking
- 1:00:28positive things and have that unwavering self belief in
- 1:00:31yourself on a daily basis. Can you get better?
- 1:00:34Are you manifesting what you want?
- 1:00:36Picturing what you want? Are you trying to get better at
- 1:00:39containing yourself? Because what you think is how
- 1:00:42your body works. And if you're thinking positive
- 1:00:45thoughts and being OK and understanding, hey, I'm here, I
- 1:00:51need to get to here, what do I have to do to get there?
- 1:00:53It's all going to help you. These are all things that are
- 1:00:55going to help you. And if you want big, big goal,
- 1:01:00if you want to reach big goals, you want to do big things, you
- 1:01:02got to put in big work. And so if you want to get paid
- 1:01:05in full, put in the work, find out what your value is, find out
- 1:01:09what you think your value is, set that, put it bigger than you
- 1:01:12think, and then put in the work to get there.
- 1:01:14And that's where you get paid in full.
- 1:01:17And so that's the motivational minute for today.
- 1:01:19What do we think about that one? Did I?
- 1:01:20I think that was a pretty good one.
- 1:01:22I think I stayed within the rounds a little bit there.
- 1:01:25Sometimes out of these I get out of hand, but but yeah, and
- 1:01:30that's and that is all we got today is that that's all we got
- 1:01:34today. So the last couple weeks, there
- 1:01:36hasn't been too many races or race efforts to report about in
- 1:01:39New England, the New England trail scene, but there's
- 1:01:42definitely stuff coming up. So again, like we're going to
- 1:01:45start mixing that stuff in. We got more interviews on the
- 1:01:47way. So stay tuned for that and I
- 1:01:50appreciate the support. Appreciate you guys listening.
- 1:01:54See you next time. Until then, we'll see you.
- 1:01:57Peace.
