- 0:38Travelers and Monster Catchers bound. I'm Stelliferous
- 0:40and this is Monster Catcher's Journal
- 0:42Podcast. Let the light of the glyphs protect
- 0:48you. Today's episode isn't your normal run -of
- 0:52-the -mill catcher story. This one's about a
- 0:54creature called the glass web. It was an ordinary
- 0:58morning on Nibiru. The twin suns and three moons
- 1:00hung in their usual places, their endless glow
- 1:03spilling across the sky. The air was calm, the
- 1:07breeze soft. One of those rare peaceful days
- 1:10when adventure felt like a distant rumor. I was
- 1:13enjoying the quiet when Orion appeared through
- 1:16the fog, his expression unreadable. Quasar, he
- 1:20said, his voice steady. I have an important mission
- 1:24for you. I raise an eyebrow this early? There's
- 1:28a new strain of carnivora plant with white meaty
- 1:31bulbs, he explained. Its seeds could be revolutionary.
- 1:35But I need you to harvest it immediately." Before
- 1:39I could argue, he handed me a map with a glowing
- 1:42red coordinate, and disappeared back into the
- 1:45mist. Moments later, Luna and Xena arrived. Do
- 1:49we have another mission, Xena asked? I hope it's
- 1:52a jungle, Luna said excitedly. I was hoping for
- 1:55a quiet island, I muttered, rolling my eyes.
- 1:58Still, I packed up the hovercar, and we set off
- 2:01toward the fern -crate rainforest. The flight
- 2:05was long and quiet. When we landed, the sight
- 2:08before us nearly took my breath away. The rainforest
- 2:11stretched in all directions, lush, damp, and
- 2:14alive. The trees were fifteen feet tall, their
- 2:16red vines like a leaf swaying, like willows in
- 2:20the wind. The underbrush shimmered with bioluminescent
- 2:23moss, glowing faintly beneath the twin suns.
- 2:28And a cool fog clung to everything, curling between
- 2:31the trunks like smoke. Wow, I whispered. Amazing,
- 2:35Luna finished my sentence for me. For a moment,
- 2:42none of us moved. The place felt ancient, untouched.
- 2:46A hidden world suspended between light and silence.
- 2:49I unfold Orion's map. We have to cross a canyon,
- 2:54pass a boulder shaped like a bird, and then find
- 2:57a lake covered in webs. The plant should be growing
- 3:00near there. We hiked for hours until we reached
- 3:03the canyon. The only bridge was a fallen tree,
- 3:06slick with moss, and hovering dangerously high
- 3:09above a roaring stream. Are you still afraid
- 3:12of heights, Luna teased? Yes, and I think it's
- 3:15justified, I snapped. Then I crossed first, calm
- 3:18as ever. I followed next, heart -hammering. When
- 3:21I reached the other side, I collapsed, kissing
- 3:23the dirt in relief. That's when I heard it, a
- 3:26faint chime, like the sound of a glass cracking
- 3:30in a slow motion. We followed the noise through
- 3:34a patch of moss and came upon something remarkable.
- 3:37Hidden beneath the roots of a twisted tree was
- 3:39a perfect circular trapdoor made of silk and
- 3:42glittering dust. When I brushed my finger over
- 3:45it, the surface shimmered like crystal, and then
- 3:48it moved. The creature that emerged was no ordinary
- 3:51spider. It was about the size of my palm, its
- 3:54body a crystal clear blue that reflected the
- 3:57light like cut glass. His legs were dark, bristled
- 4:01brown, strong and fast, but his body looked like
- 4:06it had been sculpted from water in frozen motion.
- 4:11Every time it shifted, the air around it glittered.
- 4:16It built its nest underground using its own silk
- 4:18to craft that shimmering trap door. The entire
- 4:21structure blended perfectly into the earth, invisible
- 4:24unless you knew what to look for. Inside tunnels
- 4:28spiraled downward, their walls lined with silk
- 4:31that looked almost metallic in the dim light.
- 4:37Unlike most arachnids, the glass web didn't hunt
- 4:39from the trees or chase its prey. It waited patiently
- 4:43below, the faint glimmering of its door, the
- 4:46only sign of its presence, ever so often. It
- 4:51would surface to check its web, the soft glow
- 4:54of its crystalline body breaking through the
- 4:56fog like a shard of light. I crouched low, breath
- 5:02held. Luna and Xena stood frozen behind me, staring
- 5:06at the creature in awe. Beautiful and deadly,
- 5:11I could feel the tension in the air, the stillness
- 5:13before the forest excelled. Again, the glass
- 5:17web was a perfect balance of elegance and danger,
- 5:19a living gemstone hidden beneath the soil of
- 5:22Nibiru. I stepped forward hoping to get a better
- 5:27look, and well, let's just say my curiosity got
- 5:31the better of me when I did. I remember kneeling
- 5:34there, the soft fog rolling over my boots, my
- 5:36reflection flickering in the spider's glassy
- 5:39shell. It was mesmerizing, like looking into
- 5:42a living gemstone. The creature's abdomen caught
- 5:45the light of Nibiru's twin suns and three moons,
- 5:50scattering it and fractured rainbows across the
- 5:54mossy ground. Careful still, Zeno warned in a
- 5:58whisper. I just want a closer look, I murmured,
- 6:00leaning in. The spider shifted its body, tensed,
- 6:04and a faint crackling sound filled the air, like
- 6:08ice splitting into a frosty pond, or sorry, frozen
- 6:12pond. The ground beneath my palm vibrated, I
- 6:15realized too late that I had crossed the invisible
- 6:17line, the boundary of its den. Before I could
- 6:21move, the glass webs sprang from its burrow.
- 6:24It was faster than lightning, its legs a blur
- 6:27of brown and shimmer. The trapdoor snapped shut
- 6:32behind it with a sound like shuddering crystal.
- 6:36Runs! And I shout it. I stumbled back, narrowly
- 6:39avoiding its strike. The spider's fangs gleamed
- 6:42like black or silver, or sorry, not black or
- 6:46silver, but translucent, dripping with a clear
- 6:49venom that hissed where it touched the soil.
- 6:53The webbing at its feet gleamed bright blue.
- 6:58tightening into threads so thin they could slice
- 7:02through cloth. Luna grabbed my arm. Come on,
- 7:07Stella, move. We pulled it through the underbrush,
- 7:10branches snapping beneath our feet. The sound
- 7:14of the spider's pursuit echoed behind us. It
- 7:16wasn't a loud sound, more like the soft tick,
- 7:19tick, tick of glass tapping against stone. But
- 7:22it was close, too close. The first forest blurred
- 7:26past and streaks of red and green. The fog thickened,
- 7:29the air damp with the scent of acid moss. I could
- 7:34feel the spider silk brushing my sleeve, sticky,
- 7:38light as air, but cold enough to burn. And then,
- 7:42just as sudden as it had begun, the sound stopped.
- 7:46We burst out of the trees and into a clearing,
- 7:49breathless, wide -eyed, and covered in dirt.
- 7:51Before us loomed something colossal, a rock formation
- 7:55carved by time and weather into the unmistakable
- 7:59shape of a bird, its wings stretched skyward,
- 8:02shadowing the clearing in its stony embrace.
- 8:07That's it, Xenek gasped, the landmark from the
- 8:10map, the bird -shaped rock. I turned half -expected
- 8:13to see the glass web still crawling after us,
- 8:17but there was nothing, only silence and the faint
- 8:19echo of my heart beat. Luna bent down, running
- 8:23her fingers over a patch of silver webbing, tangled
- 8:27at the edge of the rock. It followed us this
- 8:34far, she said softly, and then stopped. I nodded,
- 8:38still catching my breath. They don't chase prey
- 8:41far from their dens, I said. They only defend.
- 8:45The realization settled over me like a mist.
- 8:50We hadn't been hunted. We'd been warned. The
- 8:54glass web wasn't a monster to fear. It was a
- 8:56guardian, protecting its home. I brushed dirt
- 9:00from my coat and glanced backward toward the
- 9:04forest. Come on, I said. Let's find the lake
- 9:08before the sun sets. But as we turned to leave,
- 9:12a faint chime echoed again, far off in the fog,
- 9:15not threatening this time, almost like a farewell.
- 9:26Past the bird rock, a bird -shaped rock, the
- 9:29air began to shift. The fall grew denser. Tenged
- 9:33with a faint green glow, the forest thinned into
- 9:36a clearing where the ground dipped into a wide
- 9:39basin. And that's when we saw it, the lake. It
- 9:43wasn't water that shimmered below, but a slow
- 9:46bubbling pool of green acid, surface hissing
- 9:49and steaming under the twin suns and the three
- 9:52moons. The stench of minerals and burnt moss
- 9:55filled the air. Along the edges, blue mossy bushes
- 9:58grew in thick, vibrant clusters, each one glistening
- 10:03beneath a thin veil of sticky silk webs. This
- 10:06has to be it, Xena said, awed and concocted mixed
- 10:10in her tone. The new carnivora strain, I whispered,
- 10:14scanning the area. The plants were unlike anything
- 10:17I'd ever seen, thick stems of translucent green.
- 10:21Their tops bearing white fleshy bulbs that pulsed
- 10:26faintly, almost like they were breathing. The
- 10:29webs stretched from bush to bush, weaving through
- 10:32the foliage like living glass threads. Luna pulled
- 10:37her gloves tighter. You sure this is safe? No,
- 10:43I admit it. But since when has that stopped us?
- 10:47We stepped carefully, the ground crunching beneath
- 10:49our boots. Every sound echoed, even the rustle
- 10:54of a leaf sounded too loud in the acid air. I
- 10:59knelt beside the nearest bush and inspected a
- 11:02bulb. The texture was spongy but firm, and when
- 11:05I cut into it with my blade, a pale, milky sap
- 11:09oozed out. Oren was right. I said, these are
- 11:13nutrient -rich. No rituals, no catalyst, pure
- 11:18organic energy. We just need seven. One by one
- 11:23we began plucking the bulbs, sealing each in
- 11:25containment drawers. Three, four, five, Luna
- 11:29counted out loud six, Xena said, handing me another,
- 11:32and seven, I finished, tucking the last jar into
- 11:35my pack. For a moment all was calm, the acid
- 11:39lake hissed quietly beside us, and the blue moss
- 11:43rippled in the breeze. Then I heard it, the same
- 11:47sound from before, the faint crystalline tick
- 11:49-tick -tick. Don't move, I said. A ripple spread
- 11:53across the webbing that covered the moss, and
- 11:56from beneath a new glass web crawled into the
- 11:59opening, this one larger than the last, its crystal
- 12:02abdomen fractured with glowing green veins. The
- 12:06acid fumes had changed it, twisted it. Its eyes
- 12:10glimmered like liquid emeralds as it raised its
- 12:15front legs and hissed, the sound sharp as breaking
- 12:19glass. That's not the same one, Zenabreath. I
- 12:23know, I said, backing up slowly. It's guarding
- 12:25the lake. The spider lunged, its webbing shot
- 12:29outward like strands of lightning, catching the
- 12:33ground near my boots. I slashed at the silk with
- 12:36my blade, sparks flying as the fiber cut through
- 12:40the air. Luna grabbed one of the jars, narrowly
- 12:44dropping it. As we turned and sprinted towards
- 12:47the ridge. Go, go! I shout it. The forest came
- 12:52alive again, fog swirling, the acid lake steaming
- 12:56louder behind us. I could feel the spider's vibration
- 13:00through the earth as it chased the tick tick
- 13:03tick growing faster. A glob of webbing hissed
- 13:07past my shoulder and hit a tree, melting bark
- 13:10where it struck. We crashed through the brush.
- 13:15Hearts pounding, the sound of our own breathing
- 13:17down by the forest's chaotic course. The moment
- 13:21we saw the glint of the hover car through the
- 13:23vines, we didn't slow down. Xena jumped into
- 13:26the driver's seat, firing up the engine. The
- 13:29hover thrusters roared into life, kicking up
- 13:34a spray of leaves and dust. Luna and I dove in
- 13:38just as a final thread of silk snapped across
- 13:41the hood. The car lurched upward, breaking through
- 13:45the canopy. The spider streaked below, a piercing
- 13:48glassy well that echoed for miles, and then silenced.
- 13:52We were safe. The rainforest stretched beneath
- 13:58us, glowing in the fading light. The jars clinked
- 14:02softly in the pack, each one holding the fruit
- 14:05of our perilous harvest. We've done it, but I
- 14:09couldn't help thinking. Maybe the glass web wasn't
- 14:12defending its nest this time. Maybe it was defending
- 14:15the forest itself. I hoped Orion was proud of
- 14:22himself. We almost died thanks to his careless
- 14:25endeavor. The memory of the acid -green lake
- 14:28and the glass web still clung to my nerves like
- 14:30static. But we had managed to get the seeds,
- 14:33so he should be happy. When we finally returned
- 14:36to Luon, the mountain fog curling around the
- 14:39Academy spires felt like a blessing. Orion met
- 14:42us at the docking platform before we could even
- 14:45shut down the hovercar. His eyes gleam behind
- 14:48his lenses, already hungry for discovery. Without
- 14:52so much as a good job surviving, he snatched
- 14:56the containment case from my hand and rustled
- 14:59it straight to the research wing. Typical, Orion.
- 15:03Weeks passed, I visited his lab a few times,
- 15:06more out of curiosity than concern, and each
- 15:09time the air smelled a little greener, sharper.
- 15:13Like moss and ozone, somehow he'd done it. The
- 15:16seeds had sprouted into strange, glass -feigned
- 15:21plants that pulsed faintly in the dark. He even
- 15:25got an offer to sell them in the verdant market.
- 15:28I should have been relieved. Instead, all I could
- 15:31think was, At what cost this time, Orion? One
- 15:38bright morning, Orion summoned us to the verdant
- 15:40market. He'd set up a small stall, the sunlight
- 15:44catching the glass panels of his greenhouse crate
- 15:48like a prism. Behind the counter, rows of the
- 15:52uncooked plants glimmered, pale and translucent.
- 15:57While small sample portions of the cooked white
- 16:00bulbs sat neatly in polished trays, I called
- 16:04you three here to try it, Oren said, his voice
- 16:07tinged with pride. Since you went through the
- 16:11trouble of finding it, he handed us each a small,
- 16:14steaming sample. I picked up mine carefully,
- 16:18the steam curling around my fingers, carrying
- 16:20a sharp, earthy aroma that immediately made my
- 16:24stomach rumble. Tentatively, I bromp the first
- 16:27bite to my tongue. The moment it touched my taste
- 16:31buds, I understood exactly why Orion had insisted
- 16:34on our help. With savory and juicy, with the
- 16:38subtle sweetness that lingered behind the initial
- 16:41richness, the texture was unlike anything I'd
- 16:44ever eaten. Dense, yet tender, almost creamy
- 16:48and warm with the faintest hint of the forest
- 16:51floor. Luna's eyes widened. Oh, wow, Stel, try
- 16:56this! Xena simply nodded, her usual composed
- 16:59expression giving way to a soft smile. It's remarkable.
- 17:04I swallowed, letting the flavor settle. Orion,
- 17:07I said slowly, this isn't just good, it's incredible.
- 17:10I get why you wanted us to risk our necks for
- 17:13it. Orion's grin stretched from ear to ear. Exactly,
- 17:17he said. You three did the dangerous work. Now...
- 17:21you get the reward, and soon so will everyone
- 17:24else. As I took another bite, I couldn't help
- 17:27but glance at the faint green glow of the remaining
- 17:30uncooked plants. There was something alive in
- 17:33them, something ancient and sharp, reminding
- 17:36me of the glass webs in the acid lake, even in
- 17:39the markets bustling chaos the forest memory
- 17:42clung to them. And for now, I let myself savor
- 17:45the moment, the flavor, the triumph, and the
- 17:48rare satisfaction of a missing Sorry, mission
- 17:52finally done. Luna and Xena made their leave.
- 17:58They had other things to do, and I stayed behind
- 18:01because I really needed to talk about an important
- 18:03matter with Orion. Orion's lips pressed into
- 18:06a thin line. The look he gave me was that of
- 18:10a teacher catching a student with their hands
- 18:13in a forbidden jar. He folded his arms The annoyed
- 18:17cadence heavy in his voice. You still haven't
- 18:21told them, have you? No. I kept my voice low.
- 18:25The market's clamor rolled around us. Bender's
- 18:28hawked spiced kelp. A laugh formed from a merchant's
- 18:33apprentice. The tinker of coins. But the stall
- 18:37felt like its own island of quiet. They don't
- 18:39need to know. I intend to go after Yurikeb. For
- 18:43a beat he said nothing then he let out a breath
- 18:46that was half a laugh and half a warning If you
- 18:50go alone, you could die the glyph is he paused
- 18:52searching for words It's not simply a star -born
- 18:56thing. You can poke and take home. It's old and
- 19:01hungry I blinked. It's only a star -born from
- 19:05collision of Dark matter and supernote and a
- 19:09supernova. How can it be so hard? I hadn't meant
- 19:12the edge in my voice, but the words slipped sharp
- 19:15and naive out anyway. The annoyance melted away
- 19:21and something colder slid in. Oren's face softened,
- 19:25not in disempathy exactly, more like pity for
- 19:28someone who had just walked into a storm and
- 19:30didn't know the sky could swallow them. You keep
- 19:35calling it a star because that's what the stories
- 19:38fold it into, he said quietly. but the glyph
- 19:42but a glyph like the urakeb isn't a piece of
- 19:48sky it's a knot in the world it twists the rolls
- 19:51around it gravity bends differently near it time
- 19:55stutters the air cuts you like a knife if you
- 20:02aren't careful it binds to fear and eats it single
- 20:05misstep and it'll anchor itself to you My stomach
- 20:10flipped, and for some reason I pictured the asset
- 20:13lake, the glass tines of the webs, the thin threads
- 20:16that had tried to catch my sleeve. Orion's hands
- 20:20fidgeted with a scrap of paper on the counter.
- 20:23He moved like a man who'd rehearsed this conversation
- 20:26and hated every word. You didn't tell them because
- 20:29you wanted to protect them, he asked, or because
- 20:32you don't trust them to listen, which isn't quasar.
- 20:37The truth was both. Luna and Xena were brave
- 20:42and reckless in ways that made me love them.
- 20:44I didn't want to be the one to hand them a death
- 20:47sentence, disguised as an adventure, but there
- 20:50was a stubborn thing in me, too, a hollow that
- 20:53called for answers. Only the Eurekape could give.
- 20:57I swallowed both, I admit it. Orion's eyes narrowed.
- 21:01You already fetched me a thing others couldn't.
- 21:04I won't pretend I don't value that. But this,
- 21:07he tapped the crate of bulbs with an exacting
- 21:13finger. This success doesn't mean you can waltz
- 21:17into every mystery. If that glyph grabs hold
- 21:20of you, it won't be us who unravels it. He stepped
- 21:28closer, and for the first time since I'd known
- 21:30him, I felt a warmth that wasn't strictly academic.
- 21:34Promise me you'll let me help. Let me prepare
- 21:37you. Not to stop you, I won't. But to make sure
- 21:41you come back. Pride rose in my throat like a
- 21:45bitter taste. I'd always been the sort to charge
- 21:48first and ask questions later. It felt wrong
- 21:52to cage that, but the memory of the glass fangs,
- 21:55the way the silk had almost sliced through my
- 21:58sleeve, and the way Luna had grabbed my arm,
- 22:01all of it, made my defiance seem foolish. You
- 22:06want to come? I ask, surprised at the whisper
- 22:13of hope beneath my own words. Oren's mouth twitched.
- 22:19I can't go with you everywhere, Stella Ferris,
- 22:22but I can teach you the margins. How the Raqeb
- 22:26has bent rolls in other places, what wards will
- 22:29hold for an hour, and what will snap in ten minutes,
- 22:33I can build you something to see through the
- 22:35stutter of time it causes. I thought of Xena's
- 22:40steady hands and Luna's reckless grin. I imagined
- 22:43telling them, or not telling them, and the weight
- 22:46of the choice sat heavy in my chest. Alright,
- 22:50I said finally, the decision startling like,
- 22:53sorry, settling like a map on a table. You'll
- 22:57help me prepare. We do this smart. We do this
- 23:00with wards and lenses, and we do it quick, but
- 23:03I go." Oren nodded once solemn, already shifting
- 23:07into the motion of a man who'd traded theory
- 23:10for urgent craft. "'Well, we'll begin tonight,'
- 23:14he said. "'Bring me everything you kept from
- 23:17the lake, every thread of web, every drop of
- 23:20sap. If there's a way back from the Uruk Keb,
- 23:24it'll be found in the things that touched it.'"
- 23:29As I left the stall, the market swallowed me
- 23:32again with its colors and noise. I should have
- 23:35felt secure. I had Orion's help now, but the
- 23:38hollow in my chest hummed with a new kind of
- 23:41electricity. Preparation was a comfort and a
- 23:44countdown. Somewhere out there in the dark, a
- 23:48starlit knot waited, and I was stubborn enough,
- 23:51perhaps stupid enough, to untie it. And that's
- 23:58another episode of the Monster Catchers Journal
- 24:00podcast. And, I know it's not the same thing
- 24:05as what they say on Earth for Euregeis' trick
- 24:08or treat. Or Halloween. But, may the glyphs protect
- 24:13you. And I will be talking about the rest of
- 24:18the story next week, where I talk about the Eurekeb
- 24:21and how I caught the Eurekeb.
