- 0:27Hello, travelers, and Monster Catchers abound.
- 0:30I'm Stelliferous, and you've crash -landed on
- 0:32the Monster Catchers Journal podcast. Welcome.
- 0:37It happened after the battle with Thorn Edgeglyph.
- 0:40I was already emotionally and physically drained,
- 0:42trudging through the Silver Fault, curling around
- 0:44the outer cliffs of the Vapor Spires. That's
- 0:47when I saw it, hovering like a thundercloud frozen
- 0:49in mid -roar. Whiff's - curled from its vaporous
- 0:53form and crystalline pressure spikes jut it out
- 0:56like frozen lights cloudburst not born from emotion
- 1:01not born from darkness or light cloudburst is
- 1:04a condensation glyph a being formed from the
- 1:07natural condensation of forgotten vapors drifting
- 1:11through the higher layers of the world not sorrow
- 1:14not joy just the unspoken the thoughts too like
- 1:17to anchor to faint too faint to remember. Over
- 1:21time they gathered, condensed, and birthed him.
- 1:27It didn't see me with malice. It didn't feel
- 1:30at all. But its presence stirred pressure. Rain
- 1:34began to fall, acidic and strange, a byproduct
- 1:38of its raw chemistry. It wasn't evil, just unstable,
- 1:42a walking imbalance of elements looking for structure.
- 1:45I dropped to one knee, even Orabique bristled
- 1:49beside me. It wasn't words I heard, it was static,
- 1:53like whispers from books never written. But I
- 1:56remembered something Professor Orion told me
- 1:58once. Some glyphs aren't trying to hurt you,
- 2:01they're trying to make sense of what they are.
- 2:03So I stood up, drenched, trembling, but calm.
- 2:06I am Stella Ferris, I said. And I catch monsters,
- 2:10not because I control them, but because I understand
- 2:12them. The acid rain began to evaporate. Cloudburst
- 2:16pressure, waves slowed, its form destabilized,
- 2:20not in fear, but in surrender. I summoned a containment
- 2:24ring, not with fire or light, but with a glyph
- 2:28of my own design. Hopebind. Not born of hope,
- 2:32but shaped by it. A stabilizer, a bond. It latched
- 2:38around Cloudburst's limbs, like mist held in
- 2:41a perfect prism. The condensation calmed, storms
- 2:44settled. When I opened the capsule, there he
- 2:48was, Cloudburst. You know, people always ask
- 2:55me how I managed to contain Cloudburst without
- 2:57destroying it. The answer? I didn't fight harder.
- 3:01I used a Hopebind. Hopebinds are rare and can
- 3:04be crafted. Not every glyph hunter has one and
- 3:09even fewer understand them. They're not fighters
- 3:12or elemental brawlers. They're glyphids. Not
- 3:15full glyphids, but glyphids. Fragments of a veil
- 3:20itself, shaped by deep intention. Some call them
- 3:24harmony sigils. Others say they're echoes of
- 3:27the first glyphids ever drawn into existence.
- 3:31I just call mine... Holtbine. Physically, a Holtbine
- 3:38appears as a glowing, hovering ring. geometric
- 3:42symbols, runes that constantly shift shapes and
- 3:45language. It hovers like a halo, pulsing with
- 3:48soft, natural and neutral light. Not cold, not
- 3:53warm, just still. Around it spirals a faint hum
- 3:56-like wind, passing through crystals. Its center
- 4:00is empty, but when activated, the ring expands
- 4:03into a full circle, a containment seal that locks
- 4:07onto unstable glyphs. and dampens their surges.
- 4:12But it's more than a trap. A hopebind doesn't
- 4:15just suppress, it stabilizes. It harmonizes the
- 4:19chaotic energy around, inside the volatile, or
- 4:24unformed glyphs, allowing them to adapt, learn,
- 4:28and take form without hurting themselves or others.
- 4:31Cloudburst was unraveling when I met him, not
- 4:35because he was evil, but because he wasn't finished
- 4:37yet. His existence was like a half -formed cloud
- 4:42trying to carry lightning. He needed something
- 4:45to anchor him. Hopebine gave him that. Professor
- 4:52Orian used to say, hopebines are the unspoken
- 4:54answer to fear, not because you erase it, but
- 4:57because they give it shape, a shape you can grow
- 5:00from. He said this only after the fact that I
- 5:04created the hopebine. Hopines don't come from
- 5:08love, hope, or light, despite the name. They
- 5:10aren't emotional or anything like that at all.
- 5:14Their power lies in stability and providing structure
- 5:18where there's chaos. From where there's fog,
- 5:21silence where there's static. Sorry, form where
- 5:25there's fog. They don't fix the glyphs. They
- 5:31give them space to become whole. To bind is not
- 5:35to chain, it is to hold until balance returns.
- 5:41Anyways, as I was saying in the story, I summoned
- 5:44the Hopebind, a glowing ring of shifting runes
- 5:48orbiting me like a moon around a storm. The Hopebind
- 5:53expanded, radiating neutral pulses and circled
- 5:57cloudburst volatile core. The rain slowed, the
- 6:02spikes dissolved into mist for sixty seconds.
- 6:05He was still held stable, his body flickering
- 6:08between forms. Cloudstorms shimmered as if trying
- 6:13to decide who or what he was. But then the pressure
- 6:16returned. Holbein cracked. One glyphid shattered
- 6:23like ice. The containment rings sparkled, flickering,
- 6:27and then cloudburst broke free. The acid rain
- 6:30resumed, but now I understood it better. It wasn't
- 6:33hatred, it wasn't fear, it was disorder. Hopebind
- 6:38had bought me a moment not to win, but to witness
- 6:41that one minute gave me everything I needed.
- 6:45I stepped forward unafraid. I'm still a pharise,
- 6:48I said again, and I don't bind monsters to control
- 6:51them. I meet them in the chaos and bring them
- 6:54forward. This time I didn't use containment,
- 6:57I used connection. Cloudburst stilled again,
- 6:59not because I trapped him, but because he let
- 7:02me catch him. So I brought Cloudburst back to
- 7:10the sanctuary, contained, breathing mist inside
- 7:12his capsule like a dream, trying to escape. I
- 7:16thought they'd be proud. Professor Oren was already
- 7:18waiting, his arms crossed, back straight, jaw
- 7:22tight, tighter than usual. Beside him stood Professor
- 7:25Ling, yes, that Ling, genius, prodigy, the boy
- 7:28who graduated from Glyphs Sciences at nine years
- 7:32old, and now teaches full -time. He's my age
- 7:35and already a legend. But the look on their faces,
- 7:38not pride, not even concern, disappointment.
- 7:42"'You shouldn't have gone into the Vaporspires
- 7:44alone,' Orion said flatly. "'I wasn't alone or
- 7:47a beak was with me,' I replied. Ling shook his
- 7:49head, voice sharp, but calm. Orabik isn't a stabilizer,
- 7:53and just because you created Holbein doesn't
- 7:55mean you're immune to risk. Cloudburst is unstable.
- 8:00You barely contained him." I swallowed the lump
- 8:02in my throat. But I did. He broke free of Holbein,
- 8:06yes. But I reached him another way. He let me
- 8:10catch him. He chose to bond. Lang raised a brow.
- 8:14And that makes him safe? Or you qualified to
- 8:18decide what happens next? He's not evil. I shout
- 8:21it, louder than I meant to. He's confused. I
- 8:25was confused, too, when I first, Orion, raised
- 8:27a hand, quiet. Felt like a log. Sorry. Quiet
- 8:35felt like fog. We're not angry because you felled,
- 8:39he said, softly. We're upset because you succeeded
- 8:42and you don't see the cost. Before I could protest,
- 8:46Lang stepped forward, his gloved hand extended,
- 8:49waiting. Sorry, Stella Ferris," he said, but
- 8:51Cloudburst is being transferred to the Containment
- 8:55Wing. You can't keep him. He's too dangerous.
- 9:00You'll understand some day. I stood there frozen,
- 9:04the capsule heavy in my hands. Please don't do
- 9:07this, I whispered, but they took him. The capsule
- 9:10left my fingers like steam dissipating into cold
- 9:17air. Cloudburst didn't make a sound, he didn't
- 9:20fight, he just stared through the mist with eyes
- 9:23like silent thunder. I shouldn't be recording
- 9:28this. Orion would call it evidence, Lang would
- 9:31call it grounds for expulsion. But if I don't
- 9:35tell the truth, who will? I was angry, no, furious.
- 9:41Lang loved seeing the glyphs I caught. He used
- 9:43to say I had instincts better than in any textbook.
- 9:46Every time I walked through those doors, he'd
- 9:48rush over with questions, theories, praise, but
- 9:51after Cloudburst, that joy was gone. All I saw
- 9:54in his eyes was fear. That night, I couldn't
- 9:57sleep. I stared at the ceiling of my dorm room
- 10:00until the stars above me turned to fog in my
- 10:02vision. If I couldn't have Cloudburst, if they
- 10:06were going to lock him away like some wild mistake,
- 10:09then maybe no one should have him. I used an
- 10:12override key I wasn't supposed to still have.
- 10:15I snuck through the garden wing, slipped past
- 10:18the whisper vault, and into the lower labs of
- 10:22Luan Academy. The place was quiet. Too quiet.
- 10:25They had locked Cloudburst behind triple sigil
- 10:28seals. But I knew the code system. I'd studied
- 10:32it. I opened the capsule. Come on, boy, I whispered.
- 10:37We're leaving. But something was off. He didn't
- 10:40flow to me like before. He didn't swirl in that
- 10:42sleepy spiral. He always did when calm. He stared,
- 10:46his vapor pulsed dark at the edges. He was hurt.
- 10:50Not physically. Betrayed. And then the pressure
- 10:54dropped. He screamed a soundless internal scream,
- 10:57and suddenly the air was thick with acidic rain
- 11:00and steam. Lights burst. Glass shattered. His
- 11:05cloud form expanded, swallowing the room in the
- 11:08spiral of fog and static. Alarms welled across
- 11:12the academy. Cloud burst. No! Stop! I shouted,
- 11:17but it was too late. I'd let him loose without
- 11:19stabilizing him. I'd told myself he'd be happy
- 11:22that he'd want freedom, but all he wanted was
- 11:25to understand why I gave him up. He tore through
- 11:28three floors in under two minutes, smashed containment
- 11:32tanks, shored glyph stabilizers. I tried to reach
- 11:39him, but he wouldn't look at me. He was Cloud
- 11:42Storm Fury. And this time, he wasn't asking permission.
- 11:49I remember the sirens. I remember the smell of
- 11:52ozone and burning paper. I remember cloudburst
- 11:54eyes, wide, confused, trembling with static.
- 11:57And then light. Like a bolt of sky piercing straight
- 12:01through me. Pain, not quiet. It was more like
- 12:05being unplugged from existence. I heard someone
- 12:08screaming my name. I think it was Lang or Orion.
- 12:11And then nothing but fog. Six months later, the
- 12:16fog began to lift. First sound, then light, then
- 12:20the weight of my own breathing. I opened my eyes
- 12:24to a quiet sterile room bathed in the glow of
- 12:27artificial starlight. Machines beeped in steady
- 12:31rhythm. My body was thin, my arms weak. I couldn't
- 12:35even lift my head, but I could hear them, Orion
- 12:38and Lang at the foot of my bed. You should have
- 12:42died, Orion said quietly. No warrant, no triumph
- 12:46at my survival. Just that. I blinked. Lang stood
- 12:52beside me, arms crossed, face pale and rigged.
- 12:57You broke into the Academy, he said. You released
- 13:00an unstable glyph into a populated research facility.
- 13:05You endangered everyone, including yourself.
- 13:08I tried to speak, but my throat was dry, like
- 13:10sand, and silence. and conspired to seal it shut.
- 13:20Cloudburst almost killed you, Orion, continued,
- 13:23and when we arrived you were already unconscious.
- 13:26Your nervous system overloaded from direct atmospheric
- 13:30shock. He didn't understand what he was doing,
- 13:33but you should have. Lang stepped closer, voice
- 13:37lower, now strained. I beg them to let you keep
- 13:40studying. I fought for you after the Thorn Edge
- 13:43hunt, but you crossed a line, Stella Ferris.
- 13:46You betrayed the trust we gave you. The air was
- 13:49heavier than Cloudburst's storm. But he's okay,
- 13:53I rasp, barely audible. Orion hesitated. We stabilized
- 13:57him, barely. He's in deep stasis. We're still
- 14:02studying him, carefully. Laying at it, he's not
- 14:05your partner anymore and you're no longer allowed
- 14:07near containment labs, without full supervision.
- 14:11Silence, just the beeping machines between us.
- 14:14You could have died, Orion said again, and for
- 14:16what? I couldn't answer because the truth was
- 14:19I didn't know anymore. Orion didn't leave the
- 14:24room for a long time after Lang stormed out.
- 14:27He just stood at the window, arms folded behind
- 14:30his back, staring into the artificial sky beyond
- 14:33the hospital glass. I wanted to curl into the
- 14:37sheets and disappear, but I had to say it, even
- 14:41if my voice cracked, even if it didn't fix anything.
- 14:45I'm sorry, I whispered. I don't know why I was
- 14:48so reckless. I can't even come up with an answer,
- 14:51I just... I choked. My thoughts burned, my eyes
- 14:55did too. I wanted to justify it, wrap it up in
- 14:59something smart, something statistic. But there
- 15:02was no strategy in what I did, only fear and
- 15:05desperation. Oyan finally turned to me, his expression
- 15:08was unreadable. Still the Pharisee said, his
- 15:11voice calm but cold, I've trained glyph catchers
- 15:14for over thirty years. I've seen arrogance, impulsiveness,
- 15:19greed. But what you did wasn't about pride, he
- 15:22paused. It was about pain. I looked down at my
- 15:26hands, shaking thin, still not healed. I thought
- 15:29he needed me, I murmured, that I could reach
- 15:32him, that if I didn't save him, no one would.
- 15:36Oran sighed, and the weight of it filled the
- 15:40room. He stepped forward, closer now, until he
- 15:43was beside my bed. You have potential beyond
- 15:46most of the students here. Maybe even beyond
- 15:49Lang, he said softly. But you have to stop acting
- 15:53like you're alone." I blinked, so I'm not expelled.
- 15:57His brows arched, you think. You get to sleep
- 16:00through six months of trauma and get expelled?
- 16:02No, Stella Farris, you're not done here. You're
- 16:06just on a very short leash. He sat in the chair
- 16:11next to me. Finally, the strictness gave way
- 16:15to something more tired, more human. Look, he
- 16:19said, you can keep studying at Luan. You will
- 16:22keep studying, just as you always have. But if
- 16:25you want to catch any more glyphs, you come to
- 16:27me first. You don't go out alone. You don't improvise.
- 16:31Containment protocols. You don't sneak into vaults."
- 16:36He held my gaze. It's the only way to ensure
- 16:38your safety. I nodded slowly, eyes welling again.
- 16:41Not from shame this time, but relief. Okay, I
- 16:44said, I'll come to you every time. Orion rose
- 16:47again, giving a slow nod of his own. Good, because
- 16:52next time you might not wake up. And we wouldn't
- 16:55want that, now would we? That night, long after
- 16:59Orion left, he came back. Ling. I almost didn't
- 17:03recognize him without his lab coat, just a loose
- 17:06black hoodie, hands shoved deep into his pockets,
- 17:09head down like he was still debating whether
- 17:13he should even be here. He had flowers, nothing
- 17:16dramatic, just a messy bundle of sky blossoms,
- 17:20blue. Star -shaped, slightly wilted from the
- 17:24cold night air, he handed them to me without
- 17:26a word. I blinked. Um, thanks. Lang looked at
- 17:30the floor. They're from the gardening, the part
- 17:33that didn't get destroyed. Then he sat in the
- 17:36chair next to my bed and stared at his shoes,
- 17:39like they were about to give him advice. We didn't
- 17:43say anything for a while, the room hummed with
- 17:46medical machinery and moonlight. Finally, I broke
- 17:49the silence. You were really mad at me." He glanced
- 17:53up. I still am. Fair. He excelled through his
- 17:57nose, half a laugh, half a sigh. But I'm also
- 18:02glad you're okay. That stopped me. Lang never
- 18:05said things like that to me before. He was always
- 18:09intellect first, emotion buried under facts,
- 18:12charts, and containment models. I didn't think
- 18:15you'd visit, I admit it. I almost didn't, he
- 18:18said. I wasn't sure if I was ready to forgive
- 18:20you yet, or if you'd want to see me. I looked
- 18:25at him, really looked at him. For the first time,
- 18:28I didn't see a child genius or the youngest professor
- 18:31at Luan. I saw Lang, awkward, quiet, and trying.
- 18:35For the first time, I realized something. I liked
- 18:38him. Not the way I like stargazing or catching
- 18:41glyphs. But in that weird stomach flipping, please
- 18:44don't look at me unless you're going to look
- 18:46forever kind of way. He stood to leave. I'll
- 18:52come by tomorrow, he mumbled. You probably won't
- 18:56be able to sleep anyway. Lang, I said before
- 18:59he reached the door. He looked back. I'm really
- 19:03glad it was you who was mad at me, I said. It
- 19:07means it matters. His ears turned red. He didn't
- 19:12say anything, just gave a faint nod and left.
- 19:15The flowers sat on my bedside tray, still a little
- 19:18crooked. I smiled for the first time in six months.
- 19:24After Ling left, I stared at the flowers for
- 19:27a long time. The petals were uneven. One was
- 19:30torn. They weren't even the right color for recovery,
- 19:34but they were mine, picked for me by him. And
- 19:38that's when it hit me. not like a lightning strike,
- 19:41not like cloudburst, more like a quiet breeze
- 19:44through an open window I hadn't realized was
- 19:47opened. I had a crush on Lang, a real one, the
- 19:52kind that makes your heart kick when you hear
- 19:54that voice, the kind that rewrites the tension
- 19:57between arguments and praise into something soft,
- 20:00something that stays. I tried to laugh at myself,
- 20:03I'd just caused a campus -wide disaster and nearly
- 20:07died and broke a hundred Academy rules, and now
- 20:10my brain wanted to flirt. But it wasn't a joke,
- 20:13it was real. And it had been hiding there for
- 20:16a while, between admiration and irritation, growing
- 20:20slowly under the surface. The genus boy who always
- 20:24challenged me, the professor who believed in
- 20:26my potential, even when I broke every rule in
- 20:29the book. The only one who brought me flowers
- 20:32when I woke up, Lang. I buried my face in my
- 20:36pillow and groaned so the sewing wouldn't hear
- 20:38me. So, there I was, talking to myself like an
- 20:49idiot after Lang left. I'd popped his flowers
- 20:53up against the edge of the water cup. I was staring
- 20:57at them like they were some ancient riddle. Still
- 21:00yet I needed to solve and my brain just cracked
- 21:04open I like laying I whispered at first and then
- 21:08louder I like laying and then because I'm me
- 21:12and because six months of silence made me forget
- 21:15what volume is I Like laying I it echoed off
- 21:20the hospital walls like a confession thrown into
- 21:23a canyon. That's when I heard it a shift outside
- 21:26my door The softest creak of a boot. I froze
- 21:30as my heart stopped laying. No one answered.
- 21:33I weighed it. Then I heard it. Quiet, almost
- 21:35polite footsteps retreating down the hall. He'd
- 21:38heard me. He was still there, and he walked away.
- 21:42I buried my face in my pillow again, but this
- 21:44time I didn't groan. I just stared into the darkness
- 21:46and whispered, of course he left. I don't know
- 21:49what that means. I don't know if he scared or
- 21:54confused. Or maybe he doesn't feel the same.
- 21:57Or maybe he does. And he's just laying brilliant
- 22:01with theories, terrible with feelings. Either
- 22:04way I said it, and I can't unsay it.
