- 2:00Speaker 1: and Steve Harve with Usha. Look at her that she's
- 2:03Speaker 1: standing on her on two feet. Don't have to ask nobody,
- 2:05Speaker 1: but she understands Faith has gotten to her, and she
- 2:08Speaker 1: understands Faith is gonna stay with her until she called
- 2:11Speaker 1: for Then he calls her home for that home come
- 2:14Speaker 1: please lock on the show. Dr Holly, Carl, how you doing?
- 2:17Speaker 1: What's Carl? I'm well, how are you? Come on? Now?
- 2:20Speaker 1: That is not the Holly don't do it. I'm well,
- 2:22Speaker 1: this is girl. You are on fire. Look at here.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I want to first look deal with two with O. No,
- 2:31Speaker 1: there's certain people you have first look deals with. You
- 2:33Speaker 1: know this. I ain't gonna start knocking networks, but see
- 2:36Speaker 1: on to holiday gospel music specials, to unscripted project. Girl,
- 2:43Speaker 1: don't you still on this call with me? And be
- 2:45Speaker 1: uh and be calm. That's not now now. When you
- 2:49Speaker 1: got that deal? Okay? Were you? Were you like? Oh really?
- 2:53Speaker 1: So can you get your audience your fan base? How
- 2:56Speaker 1: I really felt to get the deal because we all
- 2:58Speaker 1: work for that. And I'm not saying that's the into
- 3:00Speaker 1: the road for you, but that's special. Special, It is special.
- 3:05Speaker 1: It is special, and I was so I felt so
- 3:09Speaker 1: blessed and I felt really excited. And you know what,
- 3:12Speaker 1: I what I realized I was doing a alive last
- 3:16Speaker 1: Saturday Morning with Kiara Shared and she had me on
- 3:20Speaker 1: with her her her this team of young women that
- 3:25Speaker 1: she mentors, and they were like, tell us about your
- 3:28Speaker 1: vision board. And when I thought about it, I had
- 3:32Speaker 1: put all my vision board, um, you know, the idea
- 3:38Speaker 1: of Oprah and the network, just because I've had such
- 3:43Speaker 1: a it's been such a inspiration to me to just
- 3:46Speaker 1: watch the success of a black woman how creating a brand.
- 3:50Speaker 1: But I just put it up there just to have
- 3:51Speaker 1: it as a point. And when I look back at it,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm like, I put that on my vision board last year,
- 3:59Speaker 1: and look at where it is I am this year.
- 4:02Speaker 1: So yeah, it was just very full circle. I felt
- 4:05Speaker 1: very blessed and also incredibly humble. Okay, cool, we're all
- 4:09Speaker 1: money making conversation. When when someone says the first look deal,
- 4:13Speaker 1: can you break it down to everybody exactly what that
- 4:15Speaker 1: means when you say to holiday gospel music specials and
- 4:18Speaker 1: too unscripted? We said unscripted. We talk about docuseries, right,
- 4:22Speaker 1: reality shows? Right, yes, documentaries, UM doc docu series which
- 4:27Speaker 1: is a reality UM series, unscripted shows and so um
- 4:32Speaker 1: the two holidays music specials, one is for Christmas, the
- 4:35Speaker 1: other is for Easter. UM, so we'll have one coming
- 4:39Speaker 1: out next year that's an Easter special, which is really powerful. Um.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And of course then the unscripted projects are really based
- 4:48Speaker 1: on families, relationship, UM, you know, uh format, so it's
- 4:55Speaker 1: you know, I'm really excited. Well, the other thing about
- 4:57Speaker 1: the reason I I bring it up in because you know,
- 5:02Speaker 1: everybody else used to get the deals. You know, you
- 5:04Speaker 1: said her, that girl, how did you get that deal?
- 5:06Speaker 1: How he get that deal? Especially when they're white, they
- 5:08Speaker 1: get the deal. Now you're seeing all the black people
- 5:10Speaker 1: getting the deals in Netflix and Fox and and then
- 5:13Speaker 1: you finally get a deal. And like I said when
- 5:16Speaker 1: I was just letting everybody know who we're talking to,
- 5:18Speaker 1: Dr Holly Carter, you know I first met her Steve Harvey.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I was doing local radio and uh in l a
- 5:25Speaker 1: name two point three to beat and she brought us
- 5:28Speaker 1: in that first time I met her. But what I
- 5:30Speaker 1: met was a person who had energy, a person who
- 5:32Speaker 1: respected the process, and the person who was a goal getter.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You know, I don't know, She's one of those people
- 5:37Speaker 1: who you meet, you go you don't know how she's
- 5:39Speaker 1: going to be successful, but you know, totallye with her.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Hang on to her because success is gonna come away
- 5:45Speaker 1: because hard work never ran from your vocabulary, did it doesn't, Holly, No, No,
- 5:51Speaker 1: I believe in working hard and and I will also
- 5:54Speaker 1: say I'm probably a bit of a micro manager only
- 5:58Speaker 1: because I like to make sure things are done well,
- 6:04Speaker 1: and I like to make sure things are followed up on,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and so I get in the fray of the minutia
- 6:10Speaker 1: just to make sure it's delivery. But you say that
- 6:14Speaker 1: like that's a bad thing, you know, micromager. Okay, let
- 6:17Speaker 1: me tell yourself. It's your career, it's your brand. You
- 6:19Speaker 1: have the right to micromanage because some people. Here's the deal.
- 6:22Speaker 1: If anybody knows Holly Carter, I was. I used to
- 6:24Speaker 1: just afraid they're twenty four hours in the day. Learn
- 6:27Speaker 1: to take advantage of each hour. That's Holly Carter. Okay.
- 6:30Speaker 1: So so when she goes to bed, she actually wakes
- 6:32Speaker 1: up thinking about what she's gonna do. I always tell
- 6:34Speaker 1: people that's the only way you're gonna wake up. That's
- 6:35Speaker 1: only way you can wake up. I don't understand people go,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I drug gotta be Hey, dude, that means you have
- 6:40Speaker 1: you went to bed not even thinking about what you're
- 6:42Speaker 1: gonna do when you get up. So what does the
- 6:44Speaker 1: typical day holly for you nowadays? Will just look apologize.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Let's go back. Let's go back to the first Ladies
- 6:52Speaker 1: of Gospel when that came out and all that that
- 6:57Speaker 1: love that you've got and that I told, would you
- 7:00Speaker 1: sold that that that many years of putting it together.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Let's go back to that before I moved forward into
- 7:05Speaker 1: the conversation, because that was special. I saw a sweater
- 7:09Speaker 1: I sweaty. I saw it three times. Okay, I saw
- 7:12Speaker 1: it because I got to interview the cast early, so
- 7:15Speaker 1: I got to see it then. So I got to
- 7:17Speaker 1: see it when it came on TV, and I got
- 7:19Speaker 1: my wife and my family to see it again because
- 7:23Speaker 1: it was done so well. And it was a story
- 7:25Speaker 1: about powerful women who have flaws, okay, and it was
- 7:30Speaker 1: an honest story. And then but how does the story
- 7:33Speaker 1: like that come about? Because it was a story that
- 7:36Speaker 1: tolds flaws, because you know, in the gospel community, one
- 7:39Speaker 1: thing they do tend to hide is flaws. And this
- 7:42Speaker 1: this movie was so receptive to me and millions of
- 7:46Speaker 1: Americans because it was an under story. Your conversation, Well,
- 7:50Speaker 1: I think what was important for me was to tell
- 7:55Speaker 1: the truth of their you know journey. He said it, well,
- 7:58Speaker 1: they were women of faith, um. They were pushed by
- 8:02Speaker 1: a very strong passionate um and faithful mother UM. But
- 8:08Speaker 1: at the same time they had a lot of love
- 8:10Speaker 1: at the same time there um certainly were areas of conflict,
- 8:17Speaker 1: and because the conflict was so relatable to national audiences.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You don't have to be a Christian, you don't have
- 8:24Speaker 1: to be African American, you don't have to be a
- 8:25Speaker 1: woman of faith. You understood where what was going on.
- 8:30Speaker 1: You understood that the mom was trying to fight for
- 8:32Speaker 1: her children. You understood that the mom was fighting against
- 8:36Speaker 1: a national organization to stay kind of you know um
- 8:42Speaker 1: traditional and not that you know uh expand out to
- 8:47Speaker 1: other areas. And so you these were all relatable issues
- 8:52Speaker 1: that came up, and so I was able to tell
- 8:54Speaker 1: It's finally here the season of celebration. And no matter
- 8:58Speaker 1: how you celebrate with family and ends, whether you're preparing
- 9:01Speaker 1: for reis magos or karamu lighting the manura, are going

- 9:28Speaker 1: and under Armor. And in the spirit of giving, Coals
- 9:32Speaker 1: Cares is donating eight million dollars to local nonprofits nationwide

- 10:50Speaker 1: E R dot ai. Of the conflict. I was able
- 10:53Speaker 1: to talk about family, I was able to talk about dreams,
- 10:56Speaker 1: and I was able to talk about faith. And now
- 11:00Speaker 1: that's really and you've always talked about Spade faith and
- 11:02Speaker 1: when you talk about the merge conferences, and that's why
- 11:05Speaker 1: when there's a certain degree of authenticity, that's part of
- 11:08Speaker 1: your brand. And so let's talk about those conferences and
- 11:11Speaker 1: how it kind of like set the I set the groundwork.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I like to believe for your for the model of
- 11:16Speaker 1: how you do business today, because you have standards you
- 11:19Speaker 1: hold me to those that Roushan you can't say that
- 11:22Speaker 1: and then and and and and and but I would
- 11:24Speaker 1: come there out of respect because of the fact that
- 11:26Speaker 1: you had a voice and you were creating a voice
- 11:29Speaker 1: that wasn't you know, you know you can make money
- 11:31Speaker 1: and pop. You can make money in R and B.
- 11:34Speaker 1: That gospel of money kind of comes slow. You know,
- 11:36Speaker 1: got to convince people to line up and participate. You know,
- 11:40Speaker 1: sponsors don't exactly jump on board for you would think
- 11:43Speaker 1: they would because it's all about feeling good. It's all
- 11:46Speaker 1: about the uplift inspirational. You think they line up, but
- 11:49Speaker 1: that laid the groundwork for your credibility and all this
- 11:52Speaker 1: and when you start lining up these gospel projects that
- 11:55Speaker 1: you involved in, but then it also allows you to
- 11:58Speaker 1: cross over to a non secular product. Jake's a lot
- 12:00Speaker 1: of people aren't walking inline like you're doing it right now.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Talk about the merge projects, Well, the merge was really
- 12:08Speaker 1: um uh an idea God gave me over twelve or
- 12:13Speaker 1: probably over fifteen years ago, and I sat on it
- 12:17Speaker 1: for a while because I felt like it was too
- 12:19Speaker 1: big of an undertaking. But the whole idea of it
- 12:22Speaker 1: was to be able to cross you know, faith and
- 12:28Speaker 1: secular or faith and the commercial sectors together in an
- 12:32Speaker 1: effort to merge opportunity I wanted to bring opportunity to
- 12:36Speaker 1: those who were sitting on the pews of the church
- 12:39Speaker 1: who really wanted to connect with Hollywood but didn't have access.
- 12:43Speaker 1: And so that kind of that that idea has kind of,
- 12:47Speaker 1: you know, spun into the rest of what I do.
- 12:50Speaker 1: I always want to bring faith and entertainment together, which
- 12:55Speaker 1: is why most of the projects that I do are
- 12:58Speaker 1: aspirationally driven and redemptive in nature, but at the same
- 13:03Speaker 1: time entertaining, well, very very entertaining. And so when when
- 13:07Speaker 1: the number Because when the numbers came in on the
- 13:09Speaker 1: First Landes of Gospel, there's always expectation. First of all,
- 13:13Speaker 1: you want people to watch it. Okay, that's the number
- 13:15Speaker 1: one thing, you know. So when the numbers came in
- 13:18Speaker 1: the way they came in, what was the ground swell
- 13:21Speaker 1: around you and the Clock Sisters involvement. Um, it was
- 13:27Speaker 1: a huge ground swell, you know, the the excitement around it,
- 13:32Speaker 1: the hype, the fact that it touched so many people,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and the fact that it um you know, it was
- 13:42Speaker 1: widely watched and um, it just it garnered so many
- 13:47Speaker 1: other opportunities because it was like you build it, they come.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And when it was built and they came others were like, oh,
- 13:56Speaker 1: they come, let's do this together. Know, so that's kind
- 14:01Speaker 1: of that's kind of what it was, all this excitement.
- 14:06Speaker 1: You're on fire, the world's don't fire. The numbers in place,
- 14:09Speaker 1: COVID hits lord and merchant. Nobody saw that coming shut
- 14:13Speaker 1: us down. How did that impact you? And how did
- 14:17Speaker 1: you deal from a family perspective and a professional perspective
- 14:20Speaker 1: with COVID nat um You just make the adjustment, you know,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I think I think the whole pandemic has been an
- 14:31Speaker 1: opportunity to reset um kind of to renew UH and
- 14:37Speaker 1: to return to some of the things that we might
- 14:41Speaker 1: have moved away from. UM. It certainly caused you to rethink, um,
- 14:48Speaker 1: how to do life, how to do family, and how
- 14:51Speaker 1: to do business and UM. You know it is it
- 14:56Speaker 1: is the word said it is required of a steward
- 14:58Speaker 1: to be found faithful. And so for me, you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I want to be found faithful in everything that presents itself.
- 15:07Speaker 1: So that was just another challenge to say, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 1: this is life. How are you going to make the adjustment?
- 15:13Speaker 1: And while it was very very difficult for us as
- 15:19Speaker 1: a as a country, as a you know, as as Americans,
- 15:24Speaker 1: there was also something very intentional about it in terms
- 15:30Speaker 1: of returning us to our first left. It would never
- 15:36Speaker 1: be said, you know, you have OWNED special the holidays
- 15:39Speaker 1: were Thanksgiving, now going into the Christmas holidays, and you
- 15:43Speaker 1: have a holiday special coming up on own. Tell us
- 15:45Speaker 1: how that count to that point and tell us about it. Uh. Well,
- 15:50Speaker 1: after the success of the Clark's Sisters, Um, that conversation
- 15:54Speaker 1: happened at OWN. However, the conversation at OWNED had happened
- 15:59Speaker 1: a year prior, um, you know, and the President was like, oh,
- 16:04Speaker 1: this was already in my head because I remember sitting
- 16:08Speaker 1: with her and her words, her last words were we're
- 16:12Speaker 1: gonna work together. And after the Clock's Sisters happened, it
- 16:18Speaker 1: was like, and now it's time. So uh, that's kind
- 16:24Speaker 1: of how that came together. And then, um, the two
- 16:27Speaker 1: specials that our own Christmas which airs December one, six
- 16:31Speaker 1: pm Pacific nine pm Easter stamptime, and of course our
- 16:36Speaker 1: own Easter which airs Easter holiday, Um, you know, going
- 16:40Speaker 1: into Easter. So um, it's been wonderful. Doing gospel at
- 16:44Speaker 1: OWN is has been awesome because they let me do
- 16:49Speaker 1: what what we do and it's been a really great partnership.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean they're like, okay, you know this world, you
- 16:57Speaker 1: go do it. Here are some of our notes. But
- 17:00Speaker 1: that congratulations, congratulations, Okay, you're a big time producing. People
- 17:05Speaker 1: come to you with projects. People got everybody got a
- 17:07Speaker 1: good idea of bad ideas. Sometimes you got to hear
- 17:09Speaker 1: the bad idea to get to the good idea. What
- 17:12Speaker 1: do I what do you look for when people are
- 17:13Speaker 1: pitching your projects? I look for things that are on
- 17:17Speaker 1: brand with what I believe in and what I want
- 17:19Speaker 1: to put my name on. Uh. And that has to
- 17:22Speaker 1: do with empowerment, aspiration, predemptive storytelling. Um, you know, I'm
- 17:29Speaker 1: really specific. There are things that I just will not do,
- 17:32Speaker 1: and then there are things that I'm like, yes, this
- 17:34Speaker 1: is me and what is what is that? Okay, we've
- 17:37Speaker 1: we've talked about the secular, combining the secular and the
- 17:40Speaker 1: gospel together. That's what Merge was all about. Now, now
- 17:44Speaker 1: you're looking at you. You are you are you? You
- 17:47Speaker 1: like to believe that you still have that perfect balance
- 17:49Speaker 1: where you can be able to go either way and
- 17:51Speaker 1: feel comfortable and still maintain credibility with your brand. Yes,
- 17:56Speaker 1: as long as I'm intentional about when I go the
- 18:00Speaker 1: other way. But but even when I go the other way,
- 18:03Speaker 1: They're still gonna always have to be align. Uh, you
- 18:08Speaker 1: know a thread of what my beliefs are because you know,
- 18:13Speaker 1: I just couldn't do anything and then still stand by.
- 18:19Speaker 1: You know, what has gotten me this far and that
- 18:23Speaker 1: and that for me is UM compromise. You know, there
- 18:28Speaker 1: are things that I am not willing to compromise in
- 18:33Speaker 1: order to achieve a certain thing. If I can't achieve
- 18:36Speaker 1: it by being true to what I believe and true
- 18:40Speaker 1: to UM what I stand behind, then I don't do
- 18:43Speaker 1: it well. Is the great thing about what you're doing
- 18:46Speaker 1: is now you started out in casting, then you started
- 18:49Speaker 1: out in talent management. Is that still on your horizon?
- 18:52Speaker 1: Talent development, talent managing, talent Well, I still manage Kiera Shre.
- 18:58Speaker 1: She's somewhat that's family to me, so I'll always be
- 19:01Speaker 1: I will always touch her career in some way. But
- 19:04Speaker 1: in terms of other talent, I do talent partnerships, and
