- 0:00Hello, and this is the Apocalypse Will Be Podcasted.
- 0:03We are a married couple from Atlanta with boring
- 0:05day jobs. We have been together 12 years, and
- 0:08we usually create a lot of weird performance
- 0:10art to entertain people. But we are trying our
- 0:13hand at having a podcast because we have had
- 0:16an obsession lately, and that obsession is Dungeon
- 0:20Crawler Carl. This is a spoilers podcast, and
- 0:23we will be discussing plot points from all seven
- 0:26Dungeon Crawler Carl books. You should not start
- 0:30this podcast until you have finished book seven.
- 0:33We will not be discussing anything from Patreon
- 0:36or the Pineapple Cabaret. There are spoilers
- 0:39from this point forward. Be warned. We lose things
- 0:44and we gain things. Carl makes this internal
- 0:47note as he notices Juicebox changes forms when
- 0:51she's sitting on Louie's lap and sees that she
- 0:54has scars she didn't have before. Her ear doesn't
- 0:58quite form when she changes, but after a moment,
- 1:01like an afterthought, one appears. Carl keeps
- 1:04talking about how stressed out he is and how
- 1:06he feels like he doesn't have a moment to breathe
- 1:08and how overwhelmed he is. And he is not the
- 1:13only person who has been making a lot of preparations
- 1:15and is showing the strain of it. Yeah, and we
- 1:18definitely see the strain that this is taking
- 1:20on Juicebox, but she is... doing her best to
- 1:24put on a show and not let that show through.
- 1:28And she is masking. Definitely. And speaking
- 1:33of masking, her level is unreliable, which is
- 1:37a quirk of all high -level NPCs, according to
- 1:39Mordecai. So basically, every time she changes
- 1:42forms, her level changes, and there's no way
- 1:44to know what her true level is. Right. It's usually
- 1:49going to be reminiscent of, I believe, the mob
- 1:52that she got that form from. So I imagine that
- 1:56it could be significantly higher if, say, she
- 1:59was able to touch a god and get that form in
- 2:03her library. So possibly, you know, level 250.
- 2:07Yeah, absolutely. And it says that Louis is terrified
- 2:11and that... does make sense because I mean it
- 2:15started out this was just kind of like a background
- 2:18NPC that like he was playing like just kind of
- 2:21a fun silly game with and then all of a sudden
- 2:24she's beheading people right and so certainly
- 2:27his perception of her has changed a lot from
- 2:30when he first met her and that is extremely valid
- 2:32yeah I mean before he was just being a horny
- 2:36drunk guy engaging in base desires. And now this
- 2:41character, this NPC, is a warlord who is absolutely
- 2:45badass and talking about revolution and killing
- 2:50everyone and so on and so forth. So that's quite
- 2:53a big personality change. I mean, I would also
- 2:56say that Louis is also not the terrified drunk
- 2:59dude that he was before. No, he definitely isn't.
- 3:02He's grizzled and battle -worn at this point
- 3:06as well. Pretty much everybody is a very different
- 3:09version of themselves than what we saw when these
- 3:12characters were introduced back on the third
- 3:15or fourth floors. Yeah, and going back to the
- 3:18opening line, we gain things, we lose things.
- 3:20Yeah, absolutely. So Juicebox pets and kind of
- 3:23plays with Mongo and Rend a little bit. And this
- 3:27is definitely something that happens over and
- 3:30over again in the books, where a quick kind of
- 3:33tell to the audience that... this is a really
- 3:36good character is that they stop and take time
- 3:38to interact with the pets. They do that with
- 3:40Baroness Victory when she's introduced as well.
- 3:42I mean, they do it in these books. And I think
- 3:44that's pretty common in a lot of media that if
- 3:47there is a character who is kind towards animals
- 3:50and pets, and then a character who maybe just
- 3:54disregards them or is generally cruel, that's
- 3:58a good indication that that person shouldn't
- 4:00be trusted. And I would also... Say that's true
- 4:04in real life, too. If someone's just like, I
- 4:07don't like dogs, I don't like cats, or has zero
- 4:09interest in engaging with them, I'm usually a
- 4:11little distrustful of those people. Yeah, people
- 4:15who are kind of hostile towards cats, I have
- 4:17accepted as a reliable red flag in my life. I
- 4:20think that there are definitely exceptions to
- 4:22that. If it's like someone's afraid of dogs because
- 4:24they were viciously mauled by a dog when they
- 4:26were a kid, that's understandable. I mean, I
- 4:29had a friend who had a scar from a cat that she
- 4:31got when she was a kid. But like the way that
- 4:34she talked about cats was just so excessive.
- 4:36It was definitely a red flag. Definitely. So
- 4:39let's keep moving on here. Juicebox has like
- 4:42a bunch of papers on her desk that she leaves
- 4:45out intentionally. And Carl notes that she had
- 4:50some that she had put away after they came into
- 4:52the room. So it's kind of like an intentional
- 4:54play on her part to say like, hey, we trust you.
- 4:59but we're also still our own people with our
- 5:02own plans and you're not going to be privy to
- 5:04everything that we're doing. I think the kind
- 5:07of dynamic that's happening here is while they
- 5:10are aligned in their overall goal of defeating
- 5:13the Outworlders and helping themselves, that
- 5:17if it came down to it, they would save their
- 5:20own people. If there was only a choice of saving
- 5:23their people. Carl would choose the Crawlers
- 5:25and Juicebox would choose the NPCs. So that's
- 5:28where this little bit level of distrust comes
- 5:30in. Well, it's not only that. Carl will always
- 5:34pick killing the Outworlders and trying to get
- 5:38his revenge over saving people as well. And Carl
- 5:42is holding back here. To a point, to a point.
- 5:45He's not just going to overtly put people in
- 5:47danger to a very large degree. No, but I think
- 5:52if Carl could get everyone out right now and
- 5:55not have any sort of revenge, I don't think he
- 5:58would take that deal. Absolutely. And we do see
- 6:01that come up later in this book when he's negotiating
- 6:04a deal with that last remaining Naga, basically
- 6:07where the Naga is like, hey, like we can protect
- 6:09you, like we can make sure your people are OK.
- 6:12And he just without consulting anybody else decides,
- 6:15fuck you, fuck you all. And Carl definitely has.
- 6:19the motivation of saving everyone as much as
- 6:22possible but he does a lot of underhanded things
- 6:25without telling anyone about it yes but also
- 6:28you should never trust contracts with the naga
- 6:30people so you should not you definitely should
- 6:34not and i think we maybe said in our first episode
- 6:37that like we didn't really agree with carl doing
- 6:39that but like going back through for the podcast
- 6:42They really hammer in, don't make deals with
- 6:45the Naga before that happens. Carl is definitely
- 6:48holding back on Juicebox because Juicebox basically
- 6:53says, well, why couldn't you make it so that
- 6:57my people get regeneration? And Carl knew that
- 7:01was never on the table. The AI was never going
- 7:04to allow that. So he tells her that he got the
- 7:08next best thing. which is that they're able to
- 7:10kill the Outworlders permanently, but I don't
- 7:14believe that that was not his intention from
- 7:17the beginning. Yeah, I would absolutely agree
- 7:19with that. From here, we start getting some information
- 7:21about Shantytown, and Carl notes from what he's
- 7:25learned in the cookbook that some version of
- 7:27Shantytown has always existed, but that in this
- 7:30season of Faction Wars, that... It's a much bigger
- 7:34version of Shantytown that kind of appeared out
- 7:36of nowhere. And like it says that ostensibly
- 7:39it was built by the NPCs, but it just kind of
- 7:42popped up. And that's an interesting internal
- 7:45storyline that the AI is portraying. Yeah, it's
- 7:50interesting because I guess like you could just
- 7:54make the NPCs believe they built it. Like it's
- 7:58interesting that they're just being straight
- 8:00up. the lore around this one isn't actually what
- 8:03happened because I don't think we really see
- 8:05that anywhere else. Right, absolutely. This is
- 8:08a direct quote. The rules had been pretty clear
- 8:10that they weren't going to add new NPCs once
- 8:13we'd flooded the town. But it appeared they'd
- 8:16either changed the rules or found some sort of
- 8:19loophole as there were some new shops with new
- 8:21NPCs. And my thought here is that it almost seems
- 8:25like the AI is giving some favoritism to the
- 8:29NPCs. I think that is because the AI has some
- 8:33level of kinship with the NPCs because in a way
- 8:38they are similar to each other. Like they're
- 8:41almost on the same playing field that the AI
- 8:43had no choice in this and the NPCs have no choice
- 8:46in being a part of this either. I mean, the crawlers
- 8:48also had no choice, but yes. Yeah, but the AI
- 8:52and the NPCs are both non -corporeal, I suppose
- 8:56is the best way of saying it. I don't think non
- 8:58-corporeal would be correct. Non -organic. Right.
- 9:01Yeah. They're both inorganic beings. So I think
- 9:06that it makes sense for the AI to have a level
- 9:09of kinship with the NPCs and offer them some
- 9:11preferential treatment. Of course, the AI also
- 9:15gives a lot of preferential treatment to Carl.
- 9:18It's because he likes his feet. Well, yes, of
- 9:21course. It says that there is no weapons or mercenary
- 9:24markets. There's a club vanquisher. Yes, there
- 9:27is a club vanquisher hidden somewhere in Shantytown
- 9:30and that does play a pretty pivotal role much
- 9:34later in the book in the whole Naga storyline.
- 9:38Of course, we're just going to keep hinting on
- 9:40that every single episode. Yeah. Somehow it's
- 9:45going to keep coming up. It's interesting here
- 9:46that Carl thinks that the changes to Shantytown
- 9:49might have happened because of a team's emergency
- 9:52action. But they are extremely transparent about
- 9:56announcing when the emergency actions happen.
- 10:00At this point, Team Retribution still has all
- 10:02three of their emergency actions and the Princess
- 10:05Posse has two. Right. But there's nowhere else
- 10:08in the books where there's an emergency action
- 10:10that it isn't announced and it's very apparent
- 10:13that that's what happened. Right. So I don't
- 10:15really know where Carl is coming up with this
- 10:18suspicion. It kind of doesn't make sense. So
- 10:21we'll just carry on from here. We learn here
- 10:23that Juicebox had been destroying or poisoning
- 10:26a lot of the food available in Shantytown to
- 10:29disrupt the other armies from being able to have
- 10:33food to feed their troops. But once the changes
- 10:37to Shantytown happened and it was updated, the
- 10:40stocks had all been refreshed when the ceasefires
- 10:43started, which I kind of just like this internal
- 10:46game mechanic. So I played a lot of RuneScape
- 10:50in my life. and a game that I still kind of follow
- 10:53what's going on. And anytime there's a major
- 10:56game update, all of the stores in that game have
- 11:00their stock refreshed. And it's kind of a mechanic
- 11:02that a lot of players will take advantage of.
- 11:05I just find that interesting the way that these
- 11:06game mechanics are actually applied. And, you
- 11:08know, Matt has, you know, the knowledge of how
- 11:11video games generally work to do so. Well, I
- 11:13wish that happened in Breath of the Wild because
- 11:15there is one point where you're just not getting
- 11:17any more bomb arrows no matter what you do. You've
- 11:20got to go find them. They're unfindable. From
- 11:23here, Carl asks Juicebox who the current mayor
- 11:26of Shantytown is, and she tells him that the
- 11:30Outorders themselves had not been allowed to
- 11:32be mayors of Shantytown and kept killing the
- 11:35current mayors. Once the game's actually begun,
- 11:38the Outorders could become the mayor of Shantytown,
- 11:41but, uh... Carl's like, OK, so who is the current
- 11:44mayor? And Juicebox is like, yeah, we just we
- 11:47can't touch this guy. And Carl's like, OK, so
- 11:50it's Ferdinand then, right? And then Juicebox
- 11:53points a pair of finger guns at him and says,
- 11:56bingo, cowboy. I love this. It's pretty cute.
- 12:00Definitely is. And this is a really interesting
- 12:03point that comes next that Brie and I were both
- 12:08kind of a little. unclear on what juicebox was
- 12:11talking about and carl asks if outworlders can
- 12:16come into the rockos and we have this quote here
- 12:19that free is going to read they're starting to
- 12:21yes juicebox said there's not much here for them
- 12:25but they still come mostly to scout these last
- 12:27few weeks before the rule changed they didn't
- 12:30dare anyone who entered regretted it immediately
- 12:33The rule change that Juicebox is referencing
- 12:36here happened in Eye of the Bethlehem Bride.
- 12:39And it said, this team will be designated as
- 12:43home team with the city of Laracos as their base.
- 12:47Effective immediately, peace rules apply until
- 12:49the game starts. Prior to that rule change, anytime
- 12:52Outworlders were coming into Laracos, Juicebox
- 12:56and her team were capturing them, torturing them,
- 12:58killing them. And like, even though they could
- 13:01regenerate, That wasn't a nice experience for
- 13:04the Outworlders. That's still painful and they
- 13:07still feel everything. So once these peace rules
- 13:10applied, the Outworlders could come into the
- 13:12Rakos and Juicebox and her people couldn't do
- 13:15anything to them. So that makes sense why they
- 13:17started coming back in. So Juicebox asks Carl
- 13:20how Ruby, one of the kids with compression sickness
- 13:22that Mordecai has been taking care of, is doing.
- 13:25And this is just another point meant to humanize
- 13:28her. Yeah, absolutely. To her. Her people, the
- 13:33NPCs, are real. Like, this is her reality. So
- 13:38Juicebox is a little freaked out by the system
- 13:40notifications. So she hears voice messaging and
- 13:43she gets notifications. But this is new to her.
- 13:47And keeping in mind, she's probably thousands
- 13:49of years old. So this is just a complete unknown
- 13:53to her. And it's a little bit of a mindfuck for
- 13:55her. Yeah. One of the things that's really interesting
- 13:58is she says that she went to meet with someone
- 14:01and she was told that she was not allowed to
- 14:05have a meeting with that person and they disappeared.
- 14:08And I'm dying to know who that was. Do you think
- 14:11it was another Outworlder team that she was trying
- 14:13to meet with? It must have had to be. I suppose
- 14:16so. Or I mean, I think it must have been someone
- 14:18in her spy network. Yeah, but. Any NPCs that
- 14:21have been recruited into her army, the only people
- 14:24that wouldn't have been able to be recruited
- 14:25into her army to create a conflict of interest
- 14:28would have been one of the Outworlders. I don't
- 14:31think we actually know that. Like, for example,
- 14:33could they make, if he was willing, could the
- 14:37manager of Club Vanquisher join their army? It
- 14:40does make sense that there would be some NPCs
- 14:42that were not recruitable into team retribution
- 14:45because, frankly, it would break the game otherwise.
- 14:48Right, yeah, it would make sense for certain
- 14:49NPCs to have to remain unaffiliated and impartial.
- 14:53It would make sense that the AI could see coordinating
- 14:56with certain NPCs as parlaying with people outside
- 15:00of your army, and that would be breaking the
- 15:01rule, similar to how later in the book when Carl
- 15:05is trying to work... with prepotente and the
- 15:09system doesn't allow him and he gets in trouble
- 15:11with his adjutant for doing so and prepotente
- 15:14gets put in basically time out for allegedly
- 15:19working with princess posse when he's just doing
- 15:23his own plans trying to strike against the naga
- 15:25yeah i mean even if Carl could convince one of
- 15:29the gods, for example, to join his princess posse.
- 15:33I don't think that would be super fair. Well,
- 15:35that does happen via conscription, though. I
- 15:38just don't know about actually convincing them
- 15:40to do so. Yeah, like Carl is interested to know
- 15:43what level of control Juicebox is given into
- 15:48the warlord menus and such. And she really doesn't
- 15:51have access to anything except for, like Bree
- 15:53said, the voice messaging and such. But that.
- 15:57is why Ferdinand was assigned as a co -warlord
- 16:01because he is of the same stock as the crawlers
- 16:05and came from Earth. So, you know, the AI kind
- 16:09of manipulating but also staying true to the
- 16:12rules of the game. I do think it's interesting
- 16:15because Ferdinand isn't a crawler, not in a typical
- 16:18sense. So, like, I think technically, like, does
- 16:22he have to be in here? It's interesting. They
- 16:24have to use someone. For sure. But what I'm saying
- 16:27is he's not like the crawlers where he can take
- 16:29a deal at the end of this floor to get out. Is
- 16:32he just trapped here permanently? Is he just
- 16:34going to die when the dungeon collapses? They
- 16:38never really specify what happens to him as someone
- 16:41who was basically brought in just to be an antagonist
- 16:45to Donut, but not made an official crawler. Right.
- 16:47And I would imagine that this is kind of along
- 16:50the same lines of... agatha who is a residual
- 16:54and in a way kind of counts as a crawler on some
- 16:58technical level but like she's not going to be
- 17:02able to take an exit deal at some point i think
- 17:04she's never going to be allowed to leave the
- 17:07dungeon but as the series goes on we all know
- 17:11that a lot of these rules are getting broken
- 17:13a lot of the different mechanics of the dungeon
- 17:15are getting broken so it's really hard to say
- 17:19what will happen here you know maybe he will
- 17:21get saved into the code of the dungeon and theoretically
- 17:24in a future season he brought back because he's
- 17:27like saved in the code of the dungeon the same
- 17:29way that like the former crawlers are and the
- 17:31way the npcs are and then they're brought back
- 17:33season after season or sometimes they're just
- 17:35held in stasis it is interesting but i will say
- 17:37that i think ferdinand is enjoying himself and
- 17:40he wouldn't want to get out if that was an option
- 17:42to him Right. And even though he's aware of what's
- 17:45happening, he still seems to have a certain level
- 17:48of like ignorance as to what is actually going
- 17:51on. Yeah, I mean, I think he is just really focused
- 17:56on Donut and the attention that he's getting
- 18:00now and doesn't really think about the danger
- 18:03to himself. And I think as we see later, he would
- 18:06sacrifice himself for Donut if he needed to.
- 18:09Yeah he definitely has this obsession with Donut
- 18:11but I also think that like he's just not very
- 18:13smart. No he is not very smart. Like I think
- 18:15that he was kind of programmed and coded in a
- 18:18way when he came into the dungeon with this fake
- 18:21storyline and I just think that when that happened
- 18:24they decided to not make him very intelligent.
- 18:26He an orange cat. He is an orange cat. Yeah.
- 18:28Everything is explained. Yes. So. Carl keeps
- 18:32talking to Juicebox about Ferdinand and you know
- 18:35she's telling him that she has to keep him around
- 18:38she has to keep him safe because he has access
- 18:40to all the warlord features and controls and
- 18:43such but like she is just so annoyed with him
- 18:47because all he's done is cause problems for her
- 18:50people but like she's pissed that this guy Ferdinand
- 18:54has been given control over the fate of her people
- 18:57and controlling all their systems and such. But
- 19:01this was the workaround that had to happen, according
- 19:03to her adjutant, for, you know, the NPCs to be
- 19:07able to participate in faction wars. Donut is
- 19:09also very pissed because she didn't expect Ferdinand
- 19:12to still be around and bothering her. And she
- 19:14definitely did not expect that Ferdinand was
- 19:17telling people that she was his fiance. And she
- 19:20is big mad and messaging him about it. She is
- 19:23very big mad. And we're going to get some great
- 19:25dialogue about that in the next chapter. Ferdinand
- 19:28is off drinking with Drake. In the Desperado
- 19:31Club. Mm -hmm. And Juicebox calls him an infected
- 19:35outworlder. And the reason she has this perception
- 19:38is she's not aware of the Valté and their people.
- 19:42So to her, she's just like, oh, he's infected
- 19:45with some kind of brain worm the same way that
- 19:48your friend Chris was. But she doesn't have that
- 19:51knowledge and understanding of how the Valté
- 19:53work. and that they're able to basically consensually
- 19:56take over someone to keep them alive and keep
- 19:59going after their natural death. Yeah, and Juicebox
- 20:03says she's tried killing him multiple times and
- 20:05it's not working. I wonder, was she given the
- 20:09knowledge of, hey, this is your adjutant, they're
- 20:11here to kind of help you out during faction wars,
- 20:13and she was just still like, yeah, fuck you.
- 20:15I don't think she trusts him. No, and I can understand
- 20:19why she wouldn't trust him at all. Same way that,
- 20:22generally speaking, Carl has a distrust of anybody,
- 20:25any outworlder, as the NPCs like to refer to
- 20:28them as. I would like to read what Odette says
- 20:31about Drick in The Bedlam Bride. And she says,
- 20:35Drick is psychotic, about to make a name for
- 20:38himself. You were right to ask about the Valte.
- 20:40It's strange they let him in. The Baroness is
- 20:43a humorless bitch, but she's the only one who
- 20:45will put up with your bullshit. Accurate. She's
- 20:48a big fan of allowing legal loopholes to get
- 20:52exploited. I wasn't sure at first about that
- 20:55lawyer of yours, but I'm moderately impressed
- 20:57he advocated for her. Yeah, we do see some very
- 21:00interesting behavior from Drake coming up here
- 21:03in this chapter. So Donut swoops in and kind
- 21:07of wingmans Louie, and he needs it. Because he's
- 21:12just basically sitting there looking freaked
- 21:14out. I think that Donut does genuinely want Louie
- 21:20and Juicebox to be happy, but she is also aware
- 21:24of how the audience is perceiving this. Yeah,
- 21:27absolutely. And like Juicebox was sitting on
- 21:30Louie's lap and then she gets up and turns back
- 21:33into the grizzled old gnoll for some reason.
- 21:35But like Carl notices how uncomfortable Louie
- 21:39is being. He's like, hey, man, you doing OK?
- 21:42And Louie's like, yeah, she is messaging me nonstop.
- 21:45It's all of this. Our houses need to be bonded.
- 21:47Game of Thrones shit. And it's freaking me out,
- 21:50man. Yeah, I mean, I think she was turning into
- 21:52the gnoll because they were leaving the area
- 21:55that they were currently in. And I think as a
- 22:00traditionally hot human woman, she was getting
- 22:04some attention that she did not have time to
- 22:09deal with. One who was born female reading this
- 22:13part of the book can sympathize with that. Yeah,
- 22:16maybe getting too much attention from other people
- 22:18in the Desperado Club, even though it's all just
- 22:20NPCs at this point. But Carl is telling Louie
- 22:23like, hey, man, you don't have to go through
- 22:25with this if you don't want to. And Louie says,
- 22:27I'll do this for us. It's cool. I already said
- 22:30I would. And then Donut chimes in and she's like,
- 22:33plus you love her, right? Yeah, well, and I mean,
- 22:36Louie does say that she's different in chat and
- 22:39that she's just scared to like everyone else.
- 22:41Yeah, like she's just putting on a show, but
- 22:43she's scared and says she's in over her head.
- 22:48And Carl's like, yeah, we all are, buddy. So
- 22:52Donut tells Louie to say something romantic and
- 22:55not be all Carl about it. And Louie says. Absolutely
- 22:59juice box. We should get married. And he's about
- 23:02to kiss her. And then he's like, could you maybe
- 23:04not be a gnoll for this part right now? And I
- 23:07do want to read what she turns into in the description.
- 23:11And this is just purely for my own silly discussion
- 23:16reasons. It's not really relevant to the plot.
- 23:19But she turned into a blonde human, different
- 23:22from her regular human form. I couldn't tell
- 23:25who she was supposed to be. It was like a mix
- 23:27between Taylor Swift and Iggy Pop. Then a cheerleader
- 23:31suit formed on her body, and I still didn't know
- 23:33who she was supposed to be. Okay, so we did not
- 23:37know the difference between Iggy Pop and Iggy
- 23:40Azalea, and we learned that today. Yeah, so like
- 23:43we both kind of thought this was about Iggy Azalea,
- 23:46even though it said Iggy Pop. And Iggy Pop is
- 23:49like an old man musician. He does have blonde
- 23:53hair, but I kind of think maybe. Matt meant Iggy
- 23:58Azalea here and not Iggy Pop? Maybe he didn't.
- 24:01I don't know. But just from the description for
- 24:04me, it was kind of fun to try to figure out who
- 24:07she was supposed to be. And I'm putting my guess
- 24:11in as Sabrina the Teenage Witch from The Chilling
- 24:14Adventures of Sabrina would match that description
- 24:17pretty well. Right, with the cheerleader aspect
- 24:20too, for sure. Jonah is just being really funny
- 24:23in all this because she is... basically telling
- 24:26Louie what to do. And he says, I love you. And
- 24:29then she's like, do it again. And he's like,
- 24:32do what again? She's like, God damn it, Louie,
- 24:34don't ruin this for me. Yeah, which I guess she
- 24:37said, haven't you seen Gossip Girl? Say it twice.
- 24:40I had no idea that that was a thing, but we still
- 24:44have not watched Gossip Girl. Yeah, I'm not going
- 24:47to. I have so many other things that I need to
- 24:51be doing. That's pretty much where this chapter
- 24:55is coming to a close. And Carl makes this comment
- 24:59that he understands the importance here of Louie
- 25:02and Juicebox getting married. And if it needs
- 25:05to happen to strengthen their alliance, that's
- 25:07good. But he makes this comment of, I knew Louie
- 25:11really liked her, but she was a goddamned NPC.
- 25:14Which I would like to repeat the point that I
- 25:16have said before that I think Carl is somewhat
- 25:18inconsistent on if he treats NPCs like real people
- 25:20or not. He definitely seems to waffle back and
- 25:23forth on that seemingly at random. But it certainly
- 25:27is interesting to watch that go back and forth.
- 25:29And then the chapter actually comes to a close
- 25:32with Brittany asking about the dwarven diggers
- 25:35and juice boxes like, oh, my dear, have you not
- 25:38seen dwarven automatons before? And this is where
- 25:41that relationship with Brittany kind of being
- 25:43the liaison between the princess posse and team
- 25:46retribution kind of starts forming. And it's
- 25:49interesting how that just kind of. seems to organically
- 25:52have taken place. That's what kind of puts Brittany's
- 25:55character into playing a bigger role in the series
- 25:58than she had previously. She was always just
- 26:01kind of like a pretty minor, small side character
- 26:04that didn't really do much. Especially like compared
- 26:07to a lot of other crawlers and characters in
- 26:09the books, she never seemed to do much of substance.
- 26:13And I think that's true of a lot of characters
- 26:15that they're just kind of... in the background
- 26:17until it's time for them to come on stage. He
- 26:20still was a pretty random character until he
- 26:22started dating Katya. True that, true that. We
