- 0:00This one's for anyone who's ever mowed a neighbor's lawn and thought, was
- 0:03that love or just passive aggressive landscaping?
- 0:07Let's be honest, sometimes we overthink love so much we
- 0:11end up doing nothing at all. Someone helps their neighbors fix a fence
- 0:15and spends the whole time wondering if they should pray out loud,
- 0:18offer a bible verse, or just hold the level and be chill.
- 0:22They go with the level, and honestly, it was probably
- 0:26enough. Welcome to Messy Advice for People Who Care,
- 0:30a summer series from Journey with Care for everyone trying
- 0:33to figure out if being neighborly requires a casserole or
- 0:37just eye contact. We're talking about caregiving, boundaries, burnout, and
- 0:40the not so clear moments of loving others well, minus
- 0:44the formulas. This is Johan on the edge of being helpful,
- 0:48clarifying that, yes, holding the door does technically count
- 0:52as ministry. No robe required. If you've
- 0:56ever felt unsure about what actually counts as loving your neighbor,
- 1:00You're not alone. Today's question puts that tension into
- 1:04words. I wanna love my neighbors, but
- 1:07I'm not sure what that's supposed to look like. Does it have to
- 1:11be big and obvious, or is the small stuff enough?
- 1:16That's such a real and freeing question, and
- 1:19maybe the answer starts smaller than we think. According
- 1:23to the Angus Reid Institute, thirty three percent of Canadians say
- 1:27they rarely or never speak to their neighbors.
- 1:31This is people you live day in and day out 10 feet away
- 1:34from a lot of the time. So if you've waved at someone this
- 1:38week, you're already outperforming a third of the country,
- 1:42gold star, but still a little sad.
- 1:46Let's be real. Most of us aren't trying to win at neighborliness.
- 1:50We're just trying to figure out what love looks like in between groceries and
- 1:54garbage day. Here's a thought. Loving your neighbor
- 1:57doesn't always mean starting a nonprofit. Sometimes it
- 2:01means not sighing audibly when they park too close to your
- 2:05recycling bin. Now imagine this. You're walking past
- 2:08your neighbor who's hauling groceries while wrangling a toddler. You
- 2:12consider helping, and then you remember you don't know their name. Then
- 2:16you panic and keep walking while overthinking it for the rest of the
- 2:20day. Welcome to the overthinker's guide to loving your neighbor.
- 2:24Let's have a look at some scripture. Let's get biblical.
- 2:28Biblical. In Matthew 25, Jesus is telling
- 2:31this powerful story about the end of days, the sheep and the goats and
- 2:35the final judgment. And he says, I was
- 2:39hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me
- 2:43something to drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me in.
- 2:47And then the people he's talking to go, wait. When when did we do that?
- 2:51His answer? Whatever you did for the least of these, you
- 2:55did for me. And here's the kicker. They didn't know they were doing
- 2:59something holy. They weren't out there Instagramming their acts of
- 3:02service or tracking spiritual mileage points. They were
- 3:06just showing up with a sandwich, a blanket, or a or a bit
- 3:09of kindness because that's what was needed. The
- 3:13good news, you don't need to feel epic for love to
- 3:17count. You just need to notice, respond,
- 3:21and stay open to what you see around you. The small
- 3:25faithful acts, the unnoticed ones,
- 3:29those are the ones Jesus celebrates, not because they're flashy,
- 3:33but because they're rooted in care without needing credit.
- 3:37So, yeah, giving your neighbor a ride to pick up their kid totally
- 3:40counts. So does offering to bring in that grocery bag
- 3:44or checking in, smiling at someone, sharing muffins,
- 3:48mowing lawns, and even holding that post hole digger.
- 3:53Love doesn't need to be loud. It just needs to be present.
- 3:57So this week instead of asking, is this enough? Maybe
- 4:00ask, is this love? If you've been stuck in the
- 4:04overthinking spiral of what does care actually look like, you're in
- 4:07good company. Don't underestimate the holy power of
- 4:11showing up quietly. And if you wanna join a group of
- 4:15people asking these same questions and having these same wrestles,
- 4:19join us on the Care Impact podcast group on Facebook. We would love to connect
- 4:23with you there. And until next time, remember to keep loving,
- 4:27keep laughing, and if holding a ladder counts as love,
- 4:30I'm basically a saint. And always remember to
- 4:34stay curious.
