- 2:38Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversation Roxane Chantey. Well, thank you,
- 2:44Speaker 1: thank you. I love that intro. Well, first of all,
- 2:48Speaker 1: let's let's just talk about this is what I know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: you know, you know your individual. I saw the Netflix
- 2:56Speaker 1: movie Roxane, Roxanne, and now you're doing this show Unsung, Okay,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and the now you know, when they do movies, they
- 3:04Speaker 1: kind of change stuff around so they can make the
- 3:07Speaker 1: storyline fit or man bellish it or may underseil certain
- 3:11Speaker 1: things in that movie. You know, your mom role in
- 3:14Speaker 1: the movie or kicked out. But what I did take
- 3:17Speaker 1: away from that movie between the ages of fifteen and eighteen,
- 3:21Speaker 1: you led a pretty full life. Absolutely, And what we
- 3:24Speaker 1: did actually with the movie is that we kind of
- 3:27Speaker 1: took things out of it because we weren't ready. You
- 3:30Speaker 1: weren't sure if the world was really ready for Rock
- 3:34Speaker 1: sand Chante, I want to say, um uncensored. So what
- 3:38Speaker 1: we what we did was we act because we wanted
- 3:41Speaker 1: to make sure that the movie was going to be
- 3:42Speaker 1: a movie where parents, especially fathers, were going to be
- 3:46Speaker 1: able to sit down and watch it with their daughters.
- 3:48Speaker 1: So there were certain aspects of the movie things that
- 3:50Speaker 1: we took out, but we did not add anything to
- 3:53Speaker 1: it because the Rock sand Shante life definitely doesn't need
- 3:56Speaker 1: any additive It is definitely great it on its own. So, um,
- 4:01Speaker 1: everything you see is everything that you saw in the
- 4:04Speaker 1: movie was factual. There was no Um, we didn't add
- 4:08Speaker 1: anything for any dramatic effect. Um, you know, it's just
- 4:11Speaker 1: how it was. And people look at the movie and say, like,
- 4:15Speaker 1: you survived that, but you're still standing, You're still smiling.
- 4:18Speaker 1: You know. I have a radio show daily on Serious
- 4:21Speaker 1: Exam which is called to Have a Nice Day, where
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm literally just trying to make sure that the world
- 4:26Speaker 1: has a nice day or at least get a chance
- 4:29Speaker 1: to laugh at least once, to forget their problems and
- 4:32Speaker 1: things that are going on, and to be able to
- 4:34Speaker 1: do that. I'm able to do that because there's a
- 4:37Speaker 1: certain resilience that are in us that allows us to say, Okay,
- 4:40Speaker 1: you know what, these are my problems, this is what
- 4:42Speaker 1: I went through. But I've also learned how to direct
- 4:45Speaker 1: the anger for those that it needs to be directed towards.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And it led me to live just a happy life.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Well you have a great life, you know. I always
- 4:53Speaker 1: I always say that, you know, I come from the
- 4:54Speaker 1: inner city and there are some things that happened to
- 4:56Speaker 1: me and as I grew up that you know, it
- 4:59Speaker 1: might not be apable to the average person in the conversation,
- 5:02Speaker 1: but it didn't damage me. It's part of my Story's
- 5:04Speaker 1: part of who I am today. I learned. I always
- 5:07Speaker 1: tell people, you know, you learn free mistakes. You know,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know, if you learn from it, it doesn't become
- 5:12Speaker 1: an error in your life. And so so there was
- 5:15Speaker 1: there there was some funny, fun characters in the movie,
- 5:18Speaker 1: like the young lady who your your your hype lady
- 5:21Speaker 1: that was a real person. Yes, absolutely, best friend Katrina,
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yes absolutely, And I think I think everyone needs to
- 5:30Speaker 1: have one of those in their life. You need to
- 5:32Speaker 1: have that person who can give you that extra hype
- 5:35Speaker 1: that you need when you're unable to hype yourself, because
- 5:37Speaker 1: you know there's some days now when we sit back
- 5:40Speaker 1: and we can't seem to get a jump, and then
- 5:42Speaker 1: you have that one phone call, that one person that'd
- 5:44Speaker 1: be like you better get up and get out there
- 5:46Speaker 1: to get on something. You know, Look what's going on
- 5:48Speaker 1: in life. Look how you live, you know, because other
- 5:50Speaker 1: people can see the value in your situation when you can't.
- 5:53Speaker 1: You know that that's what I love the character because
- 5:57Speaker 1: from so so, when did your relationship with her start?
- 5:59Speaker 1: We're talking to U Rock sand Chte. You're talking about
- 6:01Speaker 1: the movie Rock sand Rock, saying that aired on Netflix.
- 6:04Speaker 1: That came out of thinking, Uh, it's a great compelling movie.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Soon as as soon as you book for the show,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I want to watch it again. I gotta I gotta
- 6:11Speaker 1: got a shop at my rocks and Rocks sand Information
- 6:14Speaker 1: and uh gave me coming on this show, stumbling and
- 6:17Speaker 1: so and so. You know, you know, you were just
- 6:21Speaker 1: born in a great era for rap, you know, and
- 6:25Speaker 1: and the fact that you were so respected, how did
- 6:27Speaker 1: that come about? Because you are a female and you know,
- 6:30Speaker 1: if we all know this is everything is male dominant.
- 6:33Speaker 1: You know, you know women can't compete with me. They
- 6:36Speaker 1: could physically mentally, you know, socially, and then here you
- 6:41Speaker 1: are challenging status quo. Check us through that little journey
- 6:44Speaker 1: with your little rapper, your little your little hype master
- 6:47Speaker 1: right there with you. Well, I think what it is
- 6:50Speaker 1: is that having the ability to be able to freestyle
- 6:53Speaker 1: with is something that not everyone is able to do
- 6:56Speaker 1: where you can literally just sit down and rhyme throughout life.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And when I say being able to rhyn through our lives,
- 7:01Speaker 1: that means just being able to walk through the house
- 7:03Speaker 1: and rund about the things that you see, or watching
- 7:05Speaker 1: certain television shows and being able to rhyme about those
- 7:09Speaker 1: or just being able to put words together, um so effortlessly,
- 7:13Speaker 1: effortlessly with rhyming ability. It just worked out pretty good.
- 7:17Speaker 1: So it allows me to be a great battle rapper
- 7:20Speaker 1: because it allowed me to be able to talk about
- 7:22Speaker 1: whatever somebody had on. Now, having a hype person is
- 7:26Speaker 1: the person that makes sure that the crowd comes along
- 7:29Speaker 1: to see what you're doing. Because you don't want to
- 7:31Speaker 1: have a great battle and it's only three of you there,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, too may walk away and say you didn't win,
- 7:37Speaker 1: didn't you know, So you need to have a large
- 7:39Speaker 1: crowd if you're gonna do what you're doing, right. If
- 7:41Speaker 1: you're gonna show up, you got to show up and
- 7:42Speaker 1: show out. And I come from a family of women
- 7:46Speaker 1: that have always been able to do that, from when
- 7:48Speaker 1: my mom and my aunts would enter into dance contests,
- 7:51Speaker 1: and they would enter into dance contests pretending like they
- 7:53Speaker 1: didn't practice all week. You know, they just show up
- 7:56Speaker 1: and make it seem like that's just something they came
- 7:58Speaker 1: up with, knowing that that something that they did while
- 8:01Speaker 1: they were in a club, or we're gonna go to
- 8:03Speaker 1: a barbecue, or we're gonna go here. So it was
- 8:05Speaker 1: always it's coming from a family that was willing to
- 8:08Speaker 1: show up and show out. So I was never afraid
- 8:10Speaker 1: of a crowd, which I think is like, um rule
- 8:13Speaker 1: number one is, if you want to be an entertainer,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you can't be afraid of a crowd, whether there for
- 8:18Speaker 1: you or against you, you cannot be afraid of a crowd.
- 8:21Speaker 1: And UM, I was able to do that. Now. You know,
- 8:24Speaker 1: when you talk about the journey when you first started
- 8:26Speaker 1: going out, and uh, tell us about the neighborhood you
- 8:29Speaker 1: grew up in. Give us that, give us the surroundings
- 8:31Speaker 1: of the environment that you grew up in Okay, Well,
- 8:35Speaker 1: I grew up in I grew up in Queen's Bridge
- 8:38Speaker 1: Public Housing, which is the largest housing project in the world.
- 8:41Speaker 1: And it was like a city. I grew up actually
- 8:44Speaker 1: in a city where a city inside of a city,
- 8:47Speaker 1: where you didn't have to go outside of the projects
- 8:49Speaker 1: for anything. You know, everything that you needed was their schools,
- 8:52Speaker 1: medical clinic, the stores, the sneaker stores, fish markets, fruit stands.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Everything was inside of my pro including a pool and
- 9:01Speaker 1: a park. Now we've always had a multimillion dollar you
- 9:06Speaker 1: from our project, apartment windows, which is now the apartments
- 9:10Speaker 1: that people are paying millions of dollars for. But we
- 9:13Speaker 1: saw the value in that. So I never really knew
- 9:16Speaker 1: that I was in a in a hood, you know,
- 9:19Speaker 1: you know what. I just didn't seem like we had
- 9:21Speaker 1: our own train station. So all the things that everyone
- 9:25Speaker 1: inspired to have we had in the project. And it
- 9:28Speaker 1: was very family orientated. So it was a very large
- 9:31Speaker 1: family um housing project, which I think is the reason
- 9:34Speaker 1: why it was so successful and still standing because there
- 9:37Speaker 1: were families. They were people who were really related to
- 9:40Speaker 1: each other, you know, families with sixteen children, families with
- 9:43Speaker 1: ten children, families with eleven children. So because of that,
- 9:47Speaker 1: you know, they literally took over the projects and so
- 9:50Speaker 1: we didn't have a lot of problems where a lot
- 9:52Speaker 1: of other housing projects had that. But when you go
- 9:56Speaker 1: out to travel and you bring your neighbors with you,
- 9:58Speaker 1: you have thirty thousand neighbors, you know, when people stay
- 10:02Speaker 1: like okay, well, you know, you show up and you perform,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and they said, well, you know you're gonna have some
- 10:07Speaker 1: people from your neighborhood come. You gotta be like, no,
- 10:09Speaker 1: I can't. And they'd be like, well why, he was, like,
- 10:11Speaker 1: my whole neighborhood will fill this whole arena, Like I
- 10:14Speaker 1: can't invite my whole neighborhood. Where some people grew up
- 10:18Speaker 1: on a block, you know, you got ten people off
- 10:20Speaker 1: your block. You took ten thousand on one block. So
- 10:25Speaker 1: it was just different, you know, for that, but it
- 10:27Speaker 1: was a blessing, and it was one of the reasons
- 10:29Speaker 1: why I was able to walk with no fear going
- 10:32Speaker 1: into places because no matter where he went, there was
- 10:34Speaker 1: always somebody from Queensbridge there. And that is a true story.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Whether I was in Germany, it would be somebody who
- 10:41Speaker 1: went in the army from Queensbridge who went in the
- 10:44Speaker 1: army and they was in Germany showed up at the show.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You know, So it was just a blessing to be
- 10:49Speaker 1: born where I was born, especially to be born to
- 10:51Speaker 1: who I was born to, you know, having such a great,
- 10:54Speaker 1: strong mom, someone who was no nonsense alone played that role. Girl,
- 11:00Speaker 1: Oh you killed it. Then she killed and you even
- 11:02Speaker 1: think about it, is that, you know, I grew up
- 11:04Speaker 1: in the household where you were able to use for
- 11:07Speaker 1: fanny as an expression. You know, now you couldn't just
- 11:10Speaker 1: go around cursing people out right. She at the moment
- 11:13Speaker 1: arise where you need to say it. You know, I
- 11:15Speaker 1: remember the first time I heard my grandmother use foul language.
- 11:20Speaker 1: It came out of her mouth, so I guess I
- 11:22Speaker 1: want to say, like, it came out of her mouth
- 11:24Speaker 1: so smoothly. I thought she was singing to the lady.
- 11:26Speaker 1: And I was like, you know what, I can't wait
- 11:28Speaker 1: to sing that song. I love it. I love you know.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Let's let's let's go back to your mom. The Nia
- 11:34Speaker 1: Long played the role. You know, she was a strong
- 11:37Speaker 1: lady in the in the movie series. You know, she
- 11:40Speaker 1: has a guy she's dated and he does her wrong
- 11:42Speaker 1: and and she's just a single mom, just trying to
- 11:45Speaker 1: give the best life for her daughters, and but she
- 11:49Speaker 1: kept stressing education. She kept saying, stay in school, stay
- 11:52Speaker 1: in school, stay in school. How did that message play
- 11:56Speaker 1: out in your life now, that message of staying in school,
- 11:58Speaker 1: get an education. It's all good, but get an education.
- 12:02Speaker 1: You better than this, right. Well, the thing about it
- 12:05Speaker 1: was that she understood the importance of having one because
- 12:08Speaker 1: coming from the rural South, there are a lot of
- 12:11Speaker 1: things that were not available to them that she felt
- 12:14Speaker 1: was available in the city. Like I went to school.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Even though we grew up together inside of Queen's Bridge
- 12:20Speaker 1: projects and where most children went to public school, which
- 12:24Speaker 1: is like PS one eleven, my mom chose to have
- 12:26Speaker 1: us become bust children, which means we were bust out
- 12:29Speaker 1: of the neighborhood into other schools. And though there was
- 12:32Speaker 1: our own personal difficulties with doing that, because you know,
- 12:34Speaker 1: when you're the only black child in all white school,
- 12:37Speaker 1: you know, there are certain things that you deal with
- 12:39Speaker 1: on a daily basis that you wouldn't deal with if
- 12:41Speaker 1: you went to school with people in the neighborhood. But
- 12:43Speaker 1: my mom's strategy was that listen, you're gonna live with
- 12:46Speaker 1: these foods, You're gonna be with these folds. But you
- 12:49Speaker 1: know what, the world is a lot bigger than Queen's Bridge,
- 12:52Speaker 1: so I need you to start your education outside of there.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And so for me it was always very very important
- 12:58Speaker 1: and uh in wanting to pursue Julie understanding the importance
- 13:01Speaker 1: of it, and even now having a program, having a
- 13:04Speaker 1: nonprofit program with my husband called Mind over Matter where
- 13:07Speaker 1: we go into the schools to make sure these young
- 13:10Speaker 1: ladies stay in school from the ninth to the twelfth grade.
- 13:12Speaker 1: We follow them both academically and personally to make sure
- 13:16Speaker 1: that they understand the importance of school. And I tell
- 13:18Speaker 1: everyone that I said, listen, you know, I'm an advocate
- 13:21Speaker 1: for higher education because I know how important it is.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But I've also experienced the world of I like to say,
- 13:27Speaker 1: the mean world of smart people where they feel that,
- 13:31Speaker 1: you know, you must have certain documentation in order to
- 13:33Speaker 1: even be heard. So I tell everyone, like, listen, self,
- 13:37Speaker 1: education is great, um, if you're able to pursue it.
- 13:40Speaker 1: A further academic education is great. You know, into into
- 13:44Speaker 1: the world of academia, bring your own home lessons with you,
- 13:47Speaker 1: and then you'll be able to be successful. Wow. Okay,
- 13:51Speaker 1: now you just laid it out there. Actually, you know,
- 13:56Speaker 1: I'm not a guy who would put sentences together like that,
- 13:59Speaker 1: you know, but you just articulated this and they just stopped. Though, Jill,
- 14:02Speaker 1: I don't like you. I don't like you, Rock say,
- 14:04Speaker 1: I don't like you. You You know what I'm saying. You know,
- 14:06Speaker 1: you just just just laying out centers after centers at
- 14:09Speaker 1: the centers at the center, and then you just stopped.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Or you're battling me. Are you ready for me to spit?
- 14:13Speaker 1: Because they ain't gonna apple, it ain't gonna happen. But
- 14:17Speaker 1: thank you. I like the way you put that. Maybe
- 14:19Speaker 1: I'm always on I guess that is the battle wrapper
- 14:21Speaker 1: and me that allows me to uh articulate the way
- 14:24Speaker 1: I do. But I mean I've also been tapped on
- 14:26Speaker 1: the back until that, I was a pretty good artist.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Where you are you are, that's that's the gift, that's
- 14:31Speaker 1: that's the journey, and that's uh, you know, looking at
- 14:33Speaker 1: that you know represents Steven A Smith for that on
- 14:37Speaker 1: ESPN and I talked to my god, man, you got
- 14:39Speaker 1: a gift man, your ability to just to put a
- 14:41Speaker 1: centence after a centence after a centence, and they just
- 14:44Speaker 1: to see something and just to capture it and then
- 14:47Speaker 1: just give it back to a view or listen. That's
- 14:50Speaker 1: a gift. And so when I looked at you, when
- 14:52Speaker 1: I was watching the show and listening to your music
- 14:54Speaker 1: and watching the battles, and you just efforts, just just
- 14:57Speaker 1: taking all this information in. Now, no, listen to me.
- 15:00Speaker 1: My degrees in mathematics, so I know about numbers. I
- 15:02Speaker 1: know how you have to bring stuff in and you
- 15:04Speaker 1: just spit out the information. You you getting all this information,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you got noise, You've got people boo, and you've got
- 15:10Speaker 1: people cheering, You've got somebody screaming in your face, and
- 15:13Speaker 1: then you have to articulate all that information back to them.
- 15:16Speaker 1: That is a gift, young lady. Thank you, thank you,
- 15:20Speaker 1: But don't but don't do that to me. No more,
- 15:22Speaker 1: don't don't don't ratle off by fifteen sentences and didn't
- 15:24Speaker 1: stop on again, because you know I'm gonna confine you.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I'm gonna find you. You're not gonna do me on
- 15:29Speaker 1: my show. I know that, I know that I'm gonna
- 15:33Speaker 1: be back with more, just my friend now Rock sand
- 15:36Speaker 1: sat Day, We'll be right back with more from March

- 18:07Speaker 1: The money Making Conversations continues online at www dot money
- 18:11Speaker 1: Making Conversations dot com. Hi, this is Rushan McDonald and
- 18:15Speaker 1: you're listening to Money Making Conversations Roxanne Shante. She's also
- 18:19Speaker 1: hosts a live show or it's four to seven pm
- 18:21Speaker 1: on Monday through Friday of Sirius XM. It's called have
- 18:24Speaker 1: a Nice Day on Sirius XM satellite radio. Tell us
- 18:28Speaker 1: about that day, that show and how did it get started? Well,
- 18:32Speaker 1: actually I was able to get and it's so funny
- 18:35Speaker 1: because this is how it started. L l um l
- 18:38Speaker 1: cluj reached out and said, listen, you know, I want
- 18:40Speaker 1: to interview you about the movie. I'm gonna interview you
- 18:42Speaker 1: and Nia and I was like, okay, great, So I
- 18:45Speaker 1: went out to l A. When I went out to
- 18:46Speaker 1: l A, we started to an interview similar to this one,
- 18:50Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, at the end of
- 18:52Speaker 1: the interview, because I had him laughing, I had him
- 18:55Speaker 1: almost crying. We talked about past, present, future, every thing.
- 19:00Speaker 1: He said, you know what you need to be on radio.
- 19:03Speaker 1: And I was like, you think so, and he was like,
- 19:05Speaker 1: I know so, and I'm gonna make it happen. And
- 19:09Speaker 1: so I was like, okay, you know, just just taking
- 19:11Speaker 1: it nonchalanes, no problem. You know, you got my number.
- 19:15Speaker 1: You let me know. And by the time I got home,
- 19:18Speaker 1: he had me come in for an air check. And
- 19:21Speaker 1: when I went in for an air check, the I
- 19:23Speaker 1: thought I had did something wrong. And the lady came
- 19:26Speaker 1: back to me and she was like, that is the
- 19:28Speaker 1: best air check I have ever heard. And I have
- 19:31Speaker 1: been in radio for over twenty years. I've never had
- 19:34Speaker 1: a person come in and ace it in just the
- 19:37Speaker 1: first try. She said, listen, if they don't hire you,
- 19:40Speaker 1: I got a whole bunch of other places that will.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So we started laughing about it, and then the next thing,
- 19:45Speaker 1: you know, we started having a nice day. Oh my goodness.
- 19:49Speaker 1: How did the name come about? How did the name
- 19:50Speaker 1: come about? Well, it came from the fact that, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 1: I don't hold any animosity. I'm a I'm a very
- 19:56Speaker 1: pleasant person when people meet me. Of course, we all
- 19:58Speaker 1: have our sides. That knew if I'm in a battle
- 20:01Speaker 1: that you know, I stopping you right there. You're so
- 20:06Speaker 1: funny to me because I could tell you you're sweet,
- 20:09Speaker 1: You're nice, you know, bless you. Uh God is good.
- 20:13Speaker 1: But boy, they get you in the right kitchen standing
- 20:15Speaker 1: next to the right knife, it's gonna comes. You're gonna
- 20:18Speaker 1: pick it up and throwing at them. You or something else,
- 20:21Speaker 1: we're gonna bust. Wh That's the that's the beauty of
- 20:28Speaker 1: your personality. I you know, I'm gon tall. I got
- 20:31Speaker 1: six sisters and and and and just talking to you,
- 20:35Speaker 1: you know, I could just see myself just laughing and
- 20:38Speaker 1: punch you on the shoulder, and you call a little fool,
- 20:41Speaker 1: I'm calling you stupid and hugging each other and crying
- 20:44Speaker 1: at the same time. That's that's a that's a that's
- 20:47Speaker 1: a blessing. I'm just telling you that. To be able
- 20:49Speaker 1: to be that friendly but that engaging at the same time,
- 20:52Speaker 1: that's that's that's that's your gifts. That's one of your gifts.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Thank you. You know it's because I love people, and
- 21:00Speaker 1: I know that there's gonna always be a time where
- 21:02Speaker 1: everyone is not gonna love you and everyone is not
- 21:04Speaker 1: gonna like you. But you don't have to give them
- 21:06Speaker 1: a reason to do that. You know that just leave
- 21:08Speaker 1: it on them to feel their own way. But I
- 21:11Speaker 1: don't add anything to it for that to be the case.
- 21:14Speaker 1: I just like for everyone to have a nice day.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I feel like there's so much going on in the world,
- 21:18Speaker 1: and I've had so many I've had so many sad days.
- 21:22Speaker 1: But the main thing is, you know, I know what
- 21:25Speaker 1: it is to want to have a nice day, because
- 21:27Speaker 1: I know what it is for people to try to
- 21:29Speaker 1: make you not have a nice day. Okay, cool. Now,
- 21:31Speaker 1: at the beginning of the our interviews talking about that,
- 21:34Speaker 1: I said, well, did they add anything that they drop anything, Rashan,
- 21:37Speaker 1: You said, Rashan, look, uh, we kind of kind of
- 21:40Speaker 1: kind of tamed it down so you know, parents can
- 21:43Speaker 1: watch with their kids and get a learning lesson out
- 21:45Speaker 1: of this. Great great acting were received on Netflix. Now
- 21:51Speaker 1: Unsung calls you walk us through that whole process. Well,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I had already appeared. The reason how the way I
- 21:58Speaker 1: had got an Unsung with because I had appeared on
- 22:02Speaker 1: so many Unsung and had so many for everyone. You know,
- 22:07Speaker 1: they were like, hold on, did you have other son?
- 22:11Speaker 1: And I was like no. And then with the movie
- 22:15Speaker 1: and then with the radio station. You know, we weren't
- 22:18Speaker 1: even sure if I was Unsung or if I was
- 22:20Speaker 1: singing again right right? They said, listen, we think that
- 22:25Speaker 1: it's your time to have an Unsung, And I said
- 22:27Speaker 1: absolutely because I'm a huge fan of the show and
- 22:32Speaker 1: I've always thought that in order to get out of
- 22:34Speaker 1: certain information, because I love the approach that it took.
- 22:37Speaker 1: So I said, yeah, I'll definitely do it, and so
- 22:39Speaker 1: that's how we came up with me being able to
- 22:41Speaker 1: do my own Unsung. Now, with that being said, talk
- 22:46Speaker 1: about what big what role did you play and putting
- 22:49Speaker 1: it together? Do you have any saying it? Did you
- 22:51Speaker 1: have any producing powers in it? Or you just wanted
- 22:54Speaker 1: to make sure that they said we're gonna go in
- 22:56Speaker 1: this direction, you said, no, go in this direction. How
- 22:58Speaker 1: to what role did you playing their actual production or
- 23:01Speaker 1: put together the creative process. Well, for the creative process
- 23:05Speaker 1: of Unsung, they pretty much have their producers how they
- 23:08Speaker 1: would like for it to look. I think when people
- 23:10Speaker 1: say that they may be and I'm not sure if
- 23:12Speaker 1: I've ever heard anyone say this, but for people to
- 23:14Speaker 1: say that they may be unhappy with their Unsung, that
- 23:17Speaker 1: meant that they were unhappy with their life. That meant
- 23:20Speaker 1: that there were certain aspects of their life. Maybe they
- 23:22Speaker 1: chose not to reveal the Roxy and Schante stories. An
- 23:25Speaker 1: open book, I just tell everybody that you gotta make
- 23:27Speaker 1: sure you read something else before you read mine, because
- 23:30Speaker 1: it shouldn't be the only book that you read, because
- 23:33Speaker 1: there's gonna be some things in there that you need
- 23:35Speaker 1: to know about. And so I just went to them
- 23:38Speaker 1: with you know, it's an open heart, open mind, open spirit,
- 23:41Speaker 1: and was like, okay, come on, let's do it. And
- 23:43Speaker 1: they were like, well, let's talk about this. I said, okay, fine.
- 23:46Speaker 1: And if you notice, in my unsung I really allowed
- 23:49Speaker 1: others to tell the story and then gave my opinion
- 23:52Speaker 1: on their version of the story. I don't think many
- 23:55Speaker 1: other unsungs did that. I felt like it wasn't no
- 23:58Speaker 1: need for me to say, why did this for this one? Instead,
- 24:01Speaker 1: it may be that person who says what I did
- 24:03Speaker 1: from them, or I did say this person did that
- 24:06Speaker 1: to me, the one else said, look what happened to her?
- 24:10Speaker 1: And you know, because I stoo, I've always lived life.
- 24:12Speaker 1: I've never taken things and carried them with me. That's
- 24:15Speaker 1: why I'm able to travel, so, you know, travel so
- 24:18Speaker 1: much because I have every luggage. I can travel absolutely absolutely.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Here's the fun part about my interview with you and
- 24:25Speaker 1: uh and just the information you're giving everybody is that,
- 24:28Speaker 1: first of all, you're very honest. Look, I'm not over
- 24:32Speaker 1: here trying to sugarcoat this is this is my story.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I can tell you a darker story. I can tell
- 24:35Speaker 1: you this story whichever you want to sit down here, okay,
- 24:39Speaker 1: but what I'm not gonna do is brag about what
- 24:41Speaker 1: I've comelised. But that's where that's why you're a legend. See,
- 24:43Speaker 1: a legend can that when you're a legend, Rock sand see,
- 24:47Speaker 1: other people can tell their story about you. You go, yeah,
- 24:50Speaker 1: that's right. But that's how it really happened. Now, there
- 24:53Speaker 1: were two very prominent names that popped up in your movie,
- 24:58Speaker 1: Rock sand Rock said, uh Is Marquis, Yes and yes,
- 25:05Speaker 1: tell us about both. Those relationships started with Bis Markey.
- 25:09Speaker 1: My relationship with this this is my brother, beyond brother,
- 25:14Speaker 1: if you can even give someone that title. We've traveled together.
- 25:18Speaker 1: He was the first person to say to me, listen,
- 25:22Speaker 1: don't you know we're gonna be stars. He's gonna be
- 25:25Speaker 1: big stars. Yeah, you know, let's just get it and
- 25:28Speaker 1: do these battles. He was like, no, it's gonna be
- 25:31Speaker 1: bigger than this. You watch, and I told him, I said, well, listen,
- 25:34Speaker 1: my stage is your stage. So as with everyone that
- 25:38Speaker 1: was in the Juice crew, they all started off as
- 25:40Speaker 1: like my DJ first, but it wasn't like I wanted
- 25:43Speaker 1: them to be my DJ as seeing him as a
- 25:45Speaker 1: support and then oh, yeah, you're gonna be my DJ,
- 25:47Speaker 1: and it's no. I wanted them to be my DJ
- 25:49Speaker 1: so I could get them on the stage and then
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'd switched places with them during my show and let
- 25:55Speaker 1: them perform. And then I'm standing behind the turntables. I'm
- 25:58Speaker 1: not doing nothing, but I'm standing behind and making it
- 26:01Speaker 1: like I'm doing so this way they would be able
- 26:05Speaker 1: to have the same platform. I've never had a problem
- 26:07Speaker 1: with sharing my platform because anyone, you know, all I
- 26:10Speaker 1: say is that when you come on board, you come
- 26:13Speaker 1: on board and bring your best, you know, don't just
- 26:16Speaker 1: come up here just to do it. Because I never
- 26:17Speaker 1: wanted anybody to feel like, well, you know what, it's
- 26:20Speaker 1: just the rock sand chantey thing and not take it seriously.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And even to get to the point of nas you know,
- 26:27Speaker 1: I told now, I's like you you're great you know.
- 26:30Speaker 1: So now listen, you come back when you got everything together,
- 26:33Speaker 1: because why come out and do some little rhymes that
- 26:37Speaker 1: don't even represent you know, how knowledgeable you are, you
- 26:40Speaker 1: know how smart you are, how brilliant you are, how
- 26:42Speaker 1: intelligent you are. And so the next thing, you know,
- 26:45Speaker 1: he came back and he was nasty nas and how
- 26:48Speaker 1: It's like, okay, awesome. Now you know it's it's you know,
- 26:54Speaker 1: you are a you know, like I said, in my life,
- 26:57Speaker 1: I'm always paying it forward. I'm always uh step it
- 27:01Speaker 1: out of my comfort zone and telling people how great
- 27:04Speaker 1: they can be and pushing them forward. And and it's
- 27:06Speaker 1: paying back to me for me in my life right now.
- 27:09Speaker 1: And I was just doing it. And I tend to
- 27:11Speaker 1: believe that's part of your natural personality too. No matter
- 27:14Speaker 1: well you're doing good and bad in your life, I
- 27:16Speaker 1: feel you always have something good to say when you
- 27:19Speaker 1: to somebody who deserves to hear it or need to
- 27:21Speaker 1: hear it. Correct. Yes, absolutely, I am definitely a person
- 27:26Speaker 1: who will always point out the positive in people and
- 27:29Speaker 1: give them that push. I stop, I feed the homeless. Um.
- 27:33Speaker 1: If I'm going, I could be on my way going
- 27:35Speaker 1: to have a dinner, and if there's someone outside and
- 27:37Speaker 1: they said that they're hungry. I'll go inside, purchase them
- 27:40Speaker 1: and dinner, bring it outside to them before I even
- 27:42Speaker 1: sit down and get comfortable and have my own dinner,
- 27:45Speaker 1: because I know what it's like to to look at
- 27:48Speaker 1: those who have and you don't have and wish you had,
- 27:51Speaker 1: And then you say, well, you know what, when I
- 27:53Speaker 1: get in that position, I'm never gonna be selfish like them.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I'm never going to be that way. And I stick
- 27:58Speaker 1: to that, and and that's that's the way I lived
- 28:00Speaker 1: my life to know that all the things that I
- 28:03Speaker 1: said when I was younger, all the things that I
- 28:05Speaker 1: said when I was in the streets, all the things
- 28:07Speaker 1: when I said when I was boosting the stores, when
- 28:09Speaker 1: I was by myself, that I made sure to be
- 28:11Speaker 1: able to once I was in a position to make
- 28:14Speaker 1: sure that everyone was good. And sometimes that's even to
- 28:17Speaker 1: a fault because you're so busy sharing and people are
- 28:20Speaker 1: so busy stealing that you don't even realize that that's
- 28:23Speaker 1: what's happening. Right now. Here's the interesting thing about you,
- 28:26Speaker 1: because in the movie, you know it ends with that
- 28:30Speaker 1: moment with os, but we all know that you pursued
- 28:33Speaker 1: educated with the college and pursued higher education. How did
- 28:36Speaker 1: they come out with did you pay for your your
- 28:38Speaker 1: college education? How was that? How is that funding alone
- 28:41Speaker 1: the way? And how many years to take you to
- 28:43Speaker 1: go through that process? Well, what it was was that
- 28:46Speaker 1: I started off as a great keynote speakers. I'm sure
- 28:50Speaker 1: that you can tell from how I speak now that
- 28:53Speaker 1: um I was wanted and a lot of universities to
- 28:56Speaker 1: come out and I would speak on the fact of
- 28:59Speaker 1: pursuing higher education. During that time, the record company was
- 29:03Speaker 1: supposed to pay for my my education and it got
- 29:07Speaker 1: to a point where they were no longer paying for it.
- 29:10Speaker 1: So anyone that has been in school or has went
- 29:13Speaker 1: through that, you know what it is to get that
- 29:15Speaker 1: dreadful call to the bursto's office when they tell you
- 29:18Speaker 1: that you know your school has not been paid for
- 29:20Speaker 1: up until this point, then you have then you have
- 29:23Speaker 1: to leave school. And as I was leaving, I remember
- 29:26Speaker 1: speaking with one of my professors and they were like,
- 29:28Speaker 1: you know, you need to go and speak about this
- 29:30Speaker 1: out into the world. And so I became a keynote speaker.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Us the moniker of Dr Roxing and Chantay started there. Wow,
- 29:41Speaker 1: so you they were they were they were paying for
- 29:42Speaker 1: your education and it is just stopped? Yes, And did
- 29:46Speaker 1: you did you follow up on that? Why did they stop?
- 29:49Speaker 1: Or did you you just forget that. I'm just gonna
- 29:51Speaker 1: handle it myself exactly. And I was like, you know,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and there's certain things that you know, your single mom,
- 29:56Speaker 1: you're out here, you're trying to make things happen, and
- 29:59Speaker 1: you're a able to continue with it. So you pick
- 30:03Speaker 1: up whatever it is that you're able to do, and
- 30:05Speaker 1: you're able to pursue from it. But I do say
- 30:08Speaker 1: this much as I say to anyone that is listening,
- 30:10Speaker 1: that I definitely support everyone to go as far in
- 30:16Speaker 1: their education as possible. Higher education is a must. Having
- 30:20Speaker 1: a degree to a certain extent is what it does
- 30:23Speaker 1: is it allows and opens up doors for you. When
- 30:25Speaker 1: I get the chance to because now I have been
- 30:27Speaker 1: blessed so much to have so many things on my plate,
- 30:30Speaker 1: I would love to go back and pursue my education
- 30:33Speaker 1: because that's something that I've always wanted to do. Wow,
- 30:37Speaker 1: you know, I'd say the same thing I tell people that,
- 30:40Speaker 1: you know, when I came out of high school, I
- 30:42Speaker 1: wanted to be a forklift driver, and I became a
- 30:45Speaker 1: four flive driver and then I dropped the box on
- 30:48Speaker 1: the guy's hand and broke it and they fired me.
- 30:49Speaker 1: So that was the end of my forklift driving career.
- 30:52Speaker 1: And then I walked from campus and uh at the
- 30:55Speaker 1: University of Houston and saw some things that mostly the
- 30:59Speaker 1: nice looking lay needs and I went, that's that I
- 31:01Speaker 1: need to go to college. And college changed my life.
- 31:04Speaker 1: You know that. That's whatever drug me, whatever drags you
- 31:07Speaker 1: on campus, let it pull you, let it pull you,
- 31:09Speaker 1: let it pull you to that, to that and I
- 31:11Speaker 1: ain't in my education, that's what and it pulled me
- 31:14Speaker 1: on there. And uh seven years later my degree is
- 31:16Speaker 1: in mathematics, was in mathematics, and uh, I say it
- 31:19Speaker 1: is because one thing about away tell people about education.
- 31:22Speaker 1: They can't repull your degree. I can't. Nobody come and go,
- 31:24Speaker 1: you know we're gonna take that off. There were no
- 31:26Speaker 1: they can't do that. That's that's the beauty of education,
- 31:28Speaker 1: my minders and sociology. And it changed my life. So
- 31:31Speaker 1: Roxanne Sante this uh this uh Sunday. Uh you're starting
- 31:35Speaker 1: and uh starting for the first time because you've always
- 31:39Speaker 1: been on that song. Finally is about you, it's your game.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Finally Finally, you know you should like post it to say,
- 31:46Speaker 1: you know, people go in my own one. You know
- 31:48Speaker 1: this is about men and the family, about me. So
- 31:52Speaker 1: but your gifts are so so so amazed and you
- 31:55Speaker 1: you deserve the ability to speak, You deserve to have
- 31:58Speaker 1: your own radio show. But what I am join the
- 32:00Speaker 1: most about is that you have a balanced life. And
- 32:03Speaker 1: that's something I preach about on this show. Having that
- 32:05Speaker 1: balanced life. Talk to us about that. Oh. One thing
- 32:08Speaker 1: that you have to do is that in life you
- 32:10Speaker 1: must have balance. You also have to understand balance that
