- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm not broke, you know, he'll be interviewing celebrity CEOs,
- 0:19Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's what he likes to do,
- 0:22Speaker 1: it's what he likes to share. Now it's time to
- 0:25Speaker 1: hear from my man, Rashan McDonald money Making Conversations. Here
- 0:29Speaker 1: we go, absolutely money making Conversations Rashan McDonald going on
- 0:33Speaker 1: two years. Uh, and we've been making a difference. We've
- 0:36Speaker 1: been growing about the syndicate and a hundred markets with
- 0:40Speaker 1: money Making Conversations. We're hot on a podcast Donal Loads
- 0:45Speaker 1: Serious XHIL Channel one forty two. And the guests that
- 0:49Speaker 1: are come on my show or people I know, people
- 0:52Speaker 1: are consider friends, people I don't know. They come on
- 0:55Speaker 1: my show and I go, wow, we we must be
- 0:58Speaker 1: making a difference. My next guest, I usually give a
- 1:01Speaker 1: lot of credits about how good we're doing and what
- 1:03Speaker 1: we're adding all these things, but my next guest Um
- 1:06Speaker 1: has been affected my life for over twenty six years.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Um say twenty six years, because twenty team marks his
- 1:15Speaker 1: twenty six year music. I remember when he released a
- 1:18Speaker 1: single call While We Sing, that changed the landscape of
- 1:22Speaker 1: gospel music. His little story about that, I remember Steve harveing,
- 1:27Speaker 1: I were so a lot of concert in Houston, Texas
- 1:31Speaker 1: is at the music hall see see the four thousand
- 1:37Speaker 1: and I played two songs. Steve said, why do you
- 1:40Speaker 1: playing music start the show? I played, Uh, this song
- 1:44Speaker 1: called While We Sing? See so you playing gospel music
- 1:47Speaker 1: before we start a comedy show? As I dude, I
- 1:50Speaker 1: just I gotta play this song. This is my song.
- 1:53Speaker 1: This song had affected me in a way that opened
- 1:57Speaker 1: my eyes because I was I was in transition with
- 1:59Speaker 1: my life and to hear this music um from this
- 2:03Speaker 1: young man out of the four worth of Dallas area,
- 2:07Speaker 1: just changed the landscape. His album remained at number one
- 2:10Speaker 1: on Billboard Top Gospel for four to two weeks. He
- 2:13Speaker 1: was the first Gospel of Music artists an album to
- 2:16Speaker 1: sell over one million units. He's a Gospel of musician, songwriter,
- 2:21Speaker 1: choir director, and arthur. He's known for leading urban contemporary
- 2:25Speaker 1: gospel choirs such as The Family, God's Property and One
- 2:29Speaker 1: Nation Crew, and it's won multiple awards, including fourteen Grammy Awards.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Variety dubbed him as the reigning king of urban gospel.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making conversations, my man, Kurt Franklin.
- 2:44Speaker 1: What's going on? Family? You know? The thing that I
- 2:49Speaker 1: like about you is that I figured like I love
- 2:53Speaker 1: because I've been able to watch you grow as a husband,
- 2:57Speaker 1: a friend, uh, uh, an ambassador, UH, spokesperson. I've seen
- 3:02Speaker 1: you uh because it sees a lot of people don't
- 3:05Speaker 1: know that UH with Steve and I. Steve is the
- 3:07Speaker 1: host celebration of Gospel and b T I was writing
- 3:10Speaker 1: produce it. So for thirteen years I got that. I
- 3:13Speaker 1: got the joy watching Kurt Franklin the formal stage. Wow wow.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And in that thirteen years because that that show helped
- 3:24Speaker 1: transform the landscape of gospel music. At Steve Harvey, which
- 3:28Speaker 1: who wasn't wasn't a typical guy to be associated with gospel,
- 3:32Speaker 1: so he brought an audience that wouldn't normally come to gospel.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And then you guys did your theme from a uh.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It was like it was like the Grammys version of
- 3:41Speaker 1: UH or BT Awards. Yeah, yeah, yeah, man, yeah, man.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And you know, if it was transformed, if it changed
- 3:52Speaker 1: the trajectory of the genre, because what it did is
- 3:56Speaker 1: that they gave a visual introduction to a lot of
- 3:59Speaker 1: the people that uh, a lot of people in mainstream
- 4:02Speaker 1: may have just heard the music, but they didn't really
- 4:04Speaker 1: know who the people were. And so to be able
- 4:07Speaker 1: to now have a platform where people can see who
- 4:10Speaker 1: these people are and can be connected to what is
- 4:13Speaker 1: that they're doing at a deeper level, that's a very
- 4:16Speaker 1: powerful thing. And so Celebration of Gospel was very transformative,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and that you were transformative, and that Steve was transformative
- 4:23Speaker 1: and at it. So you know, those those were the
- 4:26Speaker 1: beginnings foundations of a revolution that kind of happened within
- 4:31Speaker 1: the genre. But we can say that about Celebration of Gospel,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but you started it way back then with why we
- 4:39Speaker 1: sing that money? How did how did that telling the truth?
- 4:45Speaker 1: Now tell the truth? Because you know, you know, Irban
- 4:48Speaker 1: Irban music was like, you know, you had Osley Brothers
- 4:53Speaker 1: O Jays, and then then they started playing your song
- 4:57Speaker 1: and they started playing on a regular basis on these
- 4:59Speaker 1: hot R and B station. Your song wasn't regulated to
- 5:02Speaker 1: just Sunday music. Why do you think what's it timing?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Or was it just the words of that song? You know?
- 5:14Speaker 1: If I can be very candid and and and I
- 5:17Speaker 1: know there's no human science that can regulate this statement
- 5:22Speaker 1: or can you know, say, to try to prove uh,
- 5:26Speaker 1: this type of theory. This is a theory that is
- 5:28Speaker 1: seen with invisible eye, and uh, and I trusted with
- 5:31Speaker 1: invisible hand. I believe that it was just God's grace,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you know. And and I know it's hard to quantify
- 5:37Speaker 1: that in in a platform that is all about returns
- 5:41Speaker 1: and dividends and so when they were not able to
- 5:43Speaker 1: always do that when we talk about the supernatural. But
- 5:47Speaker 1: I still believe in it, and I believe that there's
- 5:49Speaker 1: been a foundation of my life to think about it. Bro,
- 5:52Speaker 1: you're talking about somebody that does gospel music, have been
- 5:54Speaker 1: doing it for twenty six years? How I've been doing it?
- 5:57Speaker 1: And I can't say. You know, people out said that
- 6:00Speaker 1: the dope singers, you know, and I am learning around
- 6:03Speaker 1: bounce around on stage, and you know that ain't number
- 6:07Speaker 1: just you know, got as amazing grace because they don't
- 6:09Speaker 1: make no sin. It makes sense. It makes sense because
- 6:12Speaker 1: you make me, you make me emotional, you make me
- 6:15Speaker 1: uh feel good, you make me you inspire me with
- 6:18Speaker 1: your music. You make me uh step back and take
- 6:22Speaker 1: hold of what's happening in my life with your music. Um,
- 6:26Speaker 1: just an amazing combination of styles. Uh. I've asked him
- 6:30Speaker 1: to appear on the TV shows like Sister Sister with me,
- 6:33Speaker 1: so I asked, I asked him go on tour with
- 6:36Speaker 1: me with Steve Harvey, which was unprecedented, and uh, because
- 6:40Speaker 1: that's his brand and there was Steve Harvey's brand. And
- 6:44Speaker 1: then uh, I asked him to open up the Neighborhood
- 6:47Speaker 1: Awards in Las Vegas with me and he never said no,
- 6:53Speaker 1: yes sir, yes sir, And I never will never will
- 6:57Speaker 1: you know? Because because I remember I thinking, I went
- 6:59Speaker 1: to Kirk. I said, Kirk, I said, could you could
- 7:01Speaker 1: you do the Neighborhood Awards? A lot of people to
- 7:03Speaker 1: Neighborhood Awards was an awards Solder Stephen how I did
- 7:06Speaker 1: in Las Vegas for sixteen years, which sold a lot
- 7:08Speaker 1: everywhere to recognized that the stars in our community. It's
- 7:12Speaker 1: an amazing uh production of quality and sixteen years, seven
- 7:17Speaker 1: or sixteen years. And I said, I said, Kirk, could
- 7:20Speaker 1: you could you open up with melodies from heaven. He said,
- 7:23Speaker 1: melodies from heaven. I said, man, melodies from heaven. Rained
- 7:26Speaker 1: down on me, run down on me, take me in
- 7:31Speaker 1: your arms and hold me close. Yeah yeah, yeah yeah wow.
- 7:38Speaker 1: So man, I'm just very grateful for those moments. So
- 7:41Speaker 1: those are really life subsiding moments for my career. Man.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And you know, I'm just very glad to be, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 1: still around and you know, even doing it with a
- 7:49Speaker 1: new music now. So it's really a blessing. We know
- 7:52Speaker 1: it's a blessing because when he says the word because
- 7:55Speaker 1: he said family when he said my name I'm from
- 7:57Speaker 1: and uh, what's our family? And he used that when
- 8:00Speaker 1: he says that, because when we used to do the
- 8:01Speaker 1: celebration of Gospel, you, Steve and I we've been our
- 8:04Speaker 1: trailer and then Kurt come on, knock on the door,
- 8:06Speaker 1: he come on in. He said, wasn't a family, it
- 8:09Speaker 1: was it was like talking to a younger brother because
- 8:11Speaker 1: he's younger than me. And Steven telling Steve too, and
- 8:14Speaker 1: he said, I got some advice something and were looking
- 8:16Speaker 1: at him, you know, because because it's like it's like
- 8:18Speaker 1: it's like walking into a church, you know, because we were.
- 8:21Speaker 1: We were very respectful of the environment that we were
- 8:24Speaker 1: walking into. When you went into the gospel arena, that's
- 8:27Speaker 1: not our arena. We're performers, were entertainers, and guess what
- 8:32Speaker 1: we cussed and so and so when we walked in there,
- 8:38Speaker 1: we had to remember that. And so when he would
- 8:41Speaker 1: come into our trailer, it all put up, the calls
- 8:44Speaker 1: put up there with that Kurt coming in. Kurt, y'all
- 8:46Speaker 1: stop it, when y'all stop it, stop it? And and
- 8:51Speaker 1: and and he would ask for advice. And I remember
- 8:54Speaker 1: when he when they when they when they had the
- 8:55Speaker 1: opportunity to put together the the Tool with him, Marvin
- 8:59Speaker 1: Stath and uh who's there? Uh yeah, with with Oh
- 9:10Speaker 1: my god, that was a great tour they put together.
- 9:12Speaker 1: You know, he came in out trailer talking about that,
- 9:14Speaker 1: what do you think? What do you think about this songs?
- 9:17Speaker 1: He would songs that he would hit song. He asked us,
- 9:20Speaker 1: what do you think about this song? What do you
- 9:21Speaker 1: think about this song? And Steve had he for music.
- 9:24Speaker 1: And he knew that Steve had an ear from music.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I give him that he could hear a song and
- 9:28Speaker 1: he knew words and and Kirk respected that. But what
- 9:31Speaker 1: we respected most was that he is just a regular guy.
- 9:35Speaker 1: And I don't think I don't think that. I say
- 9:37Speaker 1: that and all honestly because being in the music with
- 9:41Speaker 1: twenty few years, there's so many trends and so many
- 9:43Speaker 1: up his downs, and so many people say your music,
- 9:45Speaker 1: your genre is done, you won't make it. And he's
- 9:48Speaker 1: always now I wouldn't even say the word evolved. He's
- 9:51Speaker 1: just performed. He's just been Kurt Franklin. And that's a
- 9:54Speaker 1: special quality. Brother. Thank you, that's very humbling that that
- 9:58Speaker 1: that is her humbling coming from you. And and I'm
- 10:01Speaker 1: just glad to be here on the show and letting
- 10:03Speaker 1: people know that, you know, I'm still trying to do it,
- 10:07Speaker 1: still trying to make that difference, and uh, you know,
- 10:10Speaker 1: I'm still doing it even with the new music You
- 10:13Speaker 1: Loan Live Love album and Love Theory, the new single,
- 10:16Speaker 1: and you know, I'm just just very thankful that very thankful.
- 10:21Speaker 1: Sunday's Best. Sunday Best comes back on BT June and
- 10:25Speaker 1: the host is the one and only Kurk frank They
- 10:28Speaker 1: asked you to come back. Why did you come back
- 10:30Speaker 1: and host Sunday Best? Well, you know, I've been in
- 10:33Speaker 1: talks with them over the last year year, so you know,
- 10:37Speaker 1: it's it was definitely a a you know, this conversation
- 10:41Speaker 1: that was ongoing for for about the last year or so.
- 10:44Speaker 1: You know, like like I never lost contact with with BT.
- 10:47Speaker 1: You know, they they were going through their transitions. You know,
- 10:50Speaker 1: there was something that they went through as a company,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and so you know, um, you know, sometimes you gotta
- 10:58Speaker 1: have the right people in the room. Of course that
- 11:00Speaker 1: you know that very well. You know that you can
- 11:03Speaker 1: have the right idea but the wrong people in the room,
- 11:05Speaker 1: you know, or you're gonna have the right people in
- 11:07Speaker 1: the room and have the wrong idea. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 11:11Speaker 1: So it kind of goes both ways. And so uh,
- 11:14Speaker 1: you know, God and his sovereign timing you know, made
- 11:17Speaker 1: it where you know, it just worked out at the
- 11:19Speaker 1: right time. And so yeah, new new production, new production
- 11:23Speaker 1: company knew uh level that I think that people are
- 11:27Speaker 1: going to be very very very excited about. I think
- 11:30Speaker 1: people are going to be extremely sad about this new season. Okay,
- 11:32Speaker 1: they have judges on the show. Are the judges knew
- 11:35Speaker 1: or who are the judges this year? Um, the new
- 11:37Speaker 1: judges are gonna be Kelly Price, the incredible Kelly Price
- 11:41Speaker 1: worka Campbell and now this young buck named Jonathan McReynolds
- 11:44Speaker 1: who's a new face in dust of music and he's
- 11:46Speaker 1: a beast. I love that. I love that. I love
- 11:48Speaker 1: that line up. But first of all, I love the
- 11:50Speaker 1: ft you got Kelly Price because it brings again, like
- 11:53Speaker 1: what Steve, it brings up another audience to you. You
- 11:56Speaker 1: know you're not you're not in the pocket of the
- 11:58Speaker 1: same voice. That's hot. That's pretty hot. Now your tour now,
- 12:02Speaker 1: you don't go ahead now, your tour will long live
- 12:06Speaker 1: now that the tours are presently on tour right now,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and they started as they started July level. That's the
- 12:11Speaker 1: start day from the tour level. Man, it's gonna be
- 12:15Speaker 1: an incredible tour man. And I'm and I'm giving people
- 12:17Speaker 1: all the music. I'm giving them the old music music.
- 12:19Speaker 1: So when they come, they're gonna get the s Kurl
- 12:21Speaker 1: Kirk Franklin, They're gonna get the pros colors, Kirk Franklin,
- 12:26Speaker 1: they get not Kirk Franklin. And then they're gonna get
- 12:30Speaker 1: the Kirk. They got his teeth thinks with a visilne
- 12:32Speaker 1: Kirk Franklin. So so I can do I smile, So
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know it's gonna be all see what are you
- 12:39Speaker 1: talking about? You need to go Google. I smiled the
- 12:42Speaker 1: video and that's what you're talking about right there. I
- 12:44Speaker 1: smile because that's that That video was important for us
- 12:47Speaker 1: because you know, he came to us and said, I'm
- 12:49Speaker 1: doing this video with Shaun shooting in the Atlanta Man
- 12:51Speaker 1: and and we were running ideas because a lot of
- 12:53Speaker 1: things about the relationship that I have with Kirker's that
- 12:56Speaker 1: we would do celebration of gospel and then we go
- 13:00Speaker 1: all gonn either Cape Mandolini late at night, by twelve
- 13:03Speaker 1: thirty one o'clock in the morning. But Kurt, you know
- 13:06Speaker 1: I'm for you. You will film festival telling whatever you

- 14:33Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald Rashaan mcdunne, you're listening to money making conversations.
- 14:38Speaker 1: When listening to money making conversation. I'm about exposing you
- 14:41Speaker 1: to information that you need to know about your life
- 14:44Speaker 1: in the A lot of people have dreams out there.
- 14:46Speaker 1: A lot of people don't know how to translate those
- 14:48Speaker 1: translate those dreams into success. I'm not saying if you
- 14:51Speaker 1: listen to my show, I'm gonna give you the right
- 14:53Speaker 1: message to get there. But i will tell you this,
- 14:55Speaker 1: without effort, you will get nowhere, and without effort and planning,
- 14:58Speaker 1: you will fail. You have to plan your success. You
- 15:01Speaker 1: have to have effort to create your success. And more importantly,
- 15:04Speaker 1: you have to have a relationships to support you in
- 15:06Speaker 1: your path to success, because in your path to success,
- 15:10Speaker 1: you will fail. You will fall, and if you don't
- 15:12Speaker 1: have any support groups around you when you fall, then
- 15:15Speaker 1: your failure will be a hard fall. And a lot
- 15:18Speaker 1: of people can't get up from that because they failed
- 15:20Speaker 1: to establish relationships efforts there. They've been so arrogant that
- 15:24Speaker 1: they didn't they didn't leave that the train that they
- 15:26Speaker 1: was on could fall apart where it can't fall apart.
- 15:29Speaker 1: And I've seen it many times. I've experienced it myself,
- 15:33Speaker 1: and along the way, I've learned from my mistakes. And
- 15:35Speaker 1: when I learned from my mistakes I share with others.
- 15:37Speaker 1: That is what money making conversations is about. Is about
- 15:39Speaker 1: sharing opportunities, It's about sharing information. Is about letting people
- 15:43Speaker 1: know that you too can be great. You don't have
- 15:46Speaker 1: to dream. You don't have to walk around the corner
- 15:48Speaker 1: and pray about it all day long, because even with prayer,
- 15:51Speaker 1: you gotta have effort. In with faith, you gotta have effort.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Even with the belief that somebody told you were very special,
- 15:57Speaker 1: you gotta have effort. My next guest has a fash
- 16:00Speaker 1: in two for faith, family, and fitness, and he tries
- 16:04Speaker 1: to incorporate all three aspects in his daily work as well.
- 16:07Speaker 1: He's a two time Emmy nominated actor, writer and producer.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Helen from the windy city of Chicago, one of my
- 16:13Speaker 1: favorite cities during the summer. Let y'all know, I lived
- 16:18Speaker 1: in Chicago four years. I have clothes and I bought
- 16:22Speaker 1: up that I cannot wear anywhere else because I was
- 16:24Speaker 1: up there in February March cold days. He is also
- 16:30Speaker 1: the spokesperson for the Black College Expo, which provides numerous
- 16:33Speaker 1: scholarships for students throughout the year. Please work with them
- 16:36Speaker 1: Moneymaking Conversations. My man cal Mitchell. Hello, Kale. I'm gonna
- 16:46Speaker 1: way back to Steve Harvey sitcom, sitcom that way back.
- 16:50Speaker 1: What I'm saying there was only show doing the guests appearance.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Him and his boy King was on the show doing
- 16:55Speaker 1: guest appear and every thing I remember about him man
- 16:58Speaker 1: first of all polite. Secondly, uh, just naturally gifted. And
- 17:03Speaker 1: we was on the sideline just naturally funny. It's just
- 17:06Speaker 1: and I always felt that he he knew he was talented,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but didn't know how to wrap all you know, I said,
- 17:11Speaker 1: wrap your arms around all that talent and and and
- 17:14Speaker 1: I always knew that that that if he ever figures
- 17:16Speaker 1: it out, which he has figured out throughout this, you
- 17:18Speaker 1: don't have a critics long not figured it out. But
- 17:20Speaker 1: when you look at him as a as a talent,
- 17:22Speaker 1: and and and and the and the journey is taken.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And seeing it when I first met him on Steve Show,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and and and and watching the growth of him, Well,
- 17:30Speaker 1: we're uh the journey and we're gonna talk about the
- 17:33Speaker 1: good Burger. We'll talk about everything, brother, Okay, because that

- 18:31Speaker 1: We're talking about me. We need to open up up
- 18:33Speaker 1: dream so we would have a lot of people don't
- 18:35Speaker 1: know have to translates, translate the time to do it.
- 18:38Speaker 1: I'm not saying you listen to my show. I'm gonna

- 18:55Speaker 1: amazing guy. And I'm like the partner up and we
- 19:00Speaker 1: talked about you before. We're gonna have there man and
- 19:04Speaker 1: so uh man, we can from the pop up ready
- 19:08Speaker 1: or to have their live chance, it'd be there. They've
- 19:11Speaker 1: been so terric train that they yeah, we can't take it.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Absolutely many times. I'm experienced for self. I'm learned from
- 19:22Speaker 1: my mistakes and gonna learned from my I share you
- 19:25Speaker 1: know care, I said you a lot of ten because
- 19:28Speaker 1: I'm not gonna stand in a lot that line gonna
- 19:30Speaker 1: be formations. I'm not you too. You got act there.
- 19:34Speaker 1: You don't go back back to knocking on the background.
- 19:38Speaker 1: In fact, the old guy back there thought, body, you
- 19:41Speaker 1: know you can every shot? Yeah, bring him on in there, somebody.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Let's talk about that menu. Come okay, let's talk about
- 19:46Speaker 1: that men. Let's just about faith. Two things. I love
- 19:50Speaker 1: pizzas and you try to in corporate free. I love
- 19:54Speaker 1: Hamburg daily all my is two times Hamburg have French
- 19:58Speaker 1: front due to hell and wink out the shop one
- 20:01Speaker 1: of my favorite cities. Doing the size with your bern't
- 20:04Speaker 1: talk about that menu. All you doing the Chicago that's
- 20:07Speaker 1: what you kill if you're doing shakes. I have I'm
- 20:10Speaker 1: an knock some people out like we're doing it like
- 20:11Speaker 1: I would come through the front wind as I was
- 20:13Speaker 1: updated februwhere what we're doing do stake the cool thing?
- 20:17Speaker 1: That was also the portions like blacks, they were scholars stride.
- 20:23Speaker 1: He's probably gonna have an you got kill. And I
- 20:28Speaker 1: look at you on social media and glanced about Stagram
- 20:35Speaker 1: especially media. Didn't come build your brand because where your
- 20:38Speaker 1: brand promote your break that gets the tops come out here,
- 20:43Speaker 1: it's gonna be all I remember being him man, so
- 20:45Speaker 1: tell us about the pack of social media line brand.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Secondly the thing that naturally get and you came to
- 20:52Speaker 1: the sideline. He just always say hill talent, but didn't
- 20:57Speaker 1: know how to wrap off, said wrap your a to
- 21:00Speaker 1: get better about you and you don't agree with it
- 21:03Speaker 1: and let people know. Figure immediately figured out about all
- 21:08Speaker 1: the way those are selling, those are branding hand and
- 21:14Speaker 1: with me it was like, okay, I need to look
- 21:17Speaker 1: at what is my brand? And that's where the family
- 21:21Speaker 1: talking because I was cooking a danger think got landing
- 21:27Speaker 1: like welcome to my conversation. And I said, okay, well
- 21:31Speaker 1: what do people see? And when you look at my
- 21:36Speaker 1: face to what they're seeing, I was like, well, you
- 21:37Speaker 1: know excoking. I'm about to jep my face all this
- 21:42Speaker 1: other stuff because I'll be it because I want Jamaica
- 21:45Speaker 1: when I come back from Jamaica. There is l a
- 21:49Speaker 1: when when you when you find that, then you can go, okay,
- 21:52Speaker 1: what can I put with that policy? Right that? What
- 21:57Speaker 1: other atvenues can I go with? You don't coming out
- 22:02Speaker 1: movie good one? So it's hard. So when you can
- 22:06Speaker 1: focus on, okay, this is the plan and I'm gonna walking,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and then as you know, you know, whatever puts you
- 22:12Speaker 1: on the right plane, you know, the plant black line
- 22:14Speaker 1: they stopped really really helped all and that's really what
- 22:17Speaker 1: harded me and helped me to money and always happened good.
- 22:22Speaker 1: It was very important. You know, you have to have
- 22:24Speaker 1: that started your face comes into who who worked out
- 22:28Speaker 1: some people out here, just like the restaurant, I let
- 22:31Speaker 1: go a lot of people. That word that would happen
- 22:33Speaker 1: to working with work in my life because I saw
- 22:36Speaker 1: that had amazing things are happening because it's out I
- 22:40Speaker 1: need to go to a certain levels and I didn't.
- 22:43Speaker 1: You raised me your heart in your back front. That's hard.
- 22:47Speaker 1: That's hard. That's hard. It's very hard. It's very hard
- 22:51Speaker 1: to me. I'm reminding everybody, okay, all that man can
- 22:55Speaker 1: restaurant restaurants on every Saturday thirty pm Easter the standard
- 23:00Speaker 1: time Pacific time. You know if it's that time's simple
- 23:04Speaker 1: Central times seven. Absolutely and so standing that it's amazing
- 23:10Speaker 1: when I when I look at the happiness and divorce
- 23:13Speaker 1: I'm looking at I went to Instagram, I got the
- 23:15Speaker 1: burger video and I'm not gonna stands from his last
- 23:21Speaker 1: post was all that with the front missing characters. You
- 23:32Speaker 1: really are brand like you said you're not. Really are
- 23:35Speaker 1: taking advantage your audience. They believe the model of pizza
- 23:39Speaker 1: and the loving them about your success and your fan
- 23:43Speaker 1: The whole process is being I love Hamburg, you know,
- 23:46Speaker 1: difference journey for all the fresh got a half meal,
- 23:49Speaker 1: you ed journey. You gotta have time. That's your birth.
- 23:52Speaker 1: So they're talking about that, me and you for all
- 23:54Speaker 1: you're doing, that's that's a kill. If you're doing I'm
- 23:57Speaker 1: gonna be standing. I mean, I'm not the people alive
- 23:59Speaker 1: you're doing. I mean through and what I want is
- 24:02Speaker 1: that what we do, we're doing social media. I want
- 24:05Speaker 1: them to thing about the feeling that you know what
- 24:10Speaker 1: I want them to do. Definitely that's what it's all about,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you know. And I feel that, uh, he sustained me
- 24:18Speaker 1: all these years, through through everything, you know what I mean.
- 24:21Speaker 1: And there's a lot of things that I learned. And
- 24:23Speaker 1: that's the cool thing about social media and what you're
- 24:25Speaker 1: doing too, is to share that. That's why testimonies are
- 24:29Speaker 1: so important, is to share that wisdom because so many
- 24:31Speaker 1: people are like banging their heads right now. I've been there,
- 24:34Speaker 1: like Okay, what's what's my next step? Where can I go?
- 24:37Speaker 1: What can I do? And And it's funny like now
- 24:40Speaker 1: when you look back, I go, oh, this happened, so
- 24:44Speaker 1: this can happen. This happened, so I can learn from that,
- 24:47Speaker 1: this happened, this fail you happened. But I get it.
- 24:50Speaker 1: If that didn't happen, I wouldn't be where I'm I'm now.
- 24:53Speaker 1: So it's like you learned from every part of part
- 24:55Speaker 1: of your life. I don't. I'm not upset in anything
- 24:58Speaker 1: that I learned learned from You can't be You're You're special,
- 25:02Speaker 1: You're UH. Your journey and UH and your continued success.
- 25:06Speaker 1: It's tied to the fact that you believe in yourself
- 25:09Speaker 1: and you have you made a tough decision to say,
- 25:11Speaker 1: these are the people I believe support my values, that
- 25:14Speaker 1: will get up when I get up, that will feel
- 25:16Speaker 1: my pain, will will not have a discerning voice when
- 25:19Speaker 1: I want to make something that causes effort. You know,
- 25:21Speaker 1: if you have to put out the effort, you have
- 25:23Speaker 1: to do something different because a lot of people get
- 25:24Speaker 1: a little patterned. Where I've been doing. It's been working
- 25:27Speaker 1: for me, Hola, but it ain't working for me. That's
- 25:31Speaker 1: the conversation. If it's not working, I wants tell people.
- 25:33Speaker 1: You can't be the person said at your own party,
- 25:38Speaker 1: all the liquor gone, you never touched the drop. You
- 25:40Speaker 1: can't be that person. You can't go to all eat
- 25:43Speaker 1: buffet and don't eat nothing you got. You gotta participate.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And that's all you're saying now and call man, Uh,
- 25:50Speaker 1: I'm supporting you first of all, you know. July tenth,

- 28:28Speaker 1: My man Grant Aldrich, Hi, rasha thank you for having me. Well,
- 28:33Speaker 1: thank you. Where are you calling from this morning or
- 28:35Speaker 1: this afternoon? Sir, I am in sunny southern California, rights
- 28:41Speaker 1: nearby Los Angeles? Okay, cool, Well that's the part of
- 28:44Speaker 1: the Los Angeles. They can't get sunny. You're down in
- 28:46Speaker 1: the desert. A lot of people don't know Los Angeles.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Later here you're in the desert. My friend, I lived
- 28:52Speaker 1: there for fifteen years. I know about southern, sunny, southern California.
- 28:56Speaker 1: But you can look to you to your right, then
- 28:58Speaker 1: you see mountains that you can skiing. You just drive,
- 29:02Speaker 1: just drive a little bit. You get to him, get
- 29:04Speaker 1: you can go to your go to go west and
- 29:06Speaker 1: get to the beach. That's why people love California. It's
- 29:11Speaker 1: the beautiful places. So so you so your native stay
- 29:14Speaker 1: for the weather and complain about Texas. Absolutely, that's stay
- 29:17Speaker 1: taxes for sure. So, uh, let me ask you this,
- 29:20Speaker 1: So are you are you a native? Are you just
- 29:22Speaker 1: living there right now in California? No, I was raised,
- 29:26Speaker 1: born and raised in California. And I've also then my
- 29:31Speaker 1: my wife and I split time between Nevada and California.
- 29:34Speaker 1: And so we we've we just recently had we're about
- 29:37Speaker 1: to have our third child. Congratulations were you know? Thank
- 29:40Speaker 1: you very much. And uh, we want to be closer
- 29:43Speaker 1: to family, so we split time. We're mostly based in Nevada,
- 29:45Speaker 1: but right now we're in where I'm originally from, in
- 29:48Speaker 1: the l A area. Right, So Nevada. Las Vegas is
- 29:52Speaker 1: one of my favorite cities. A you areno guy Las Vegas. Whatever,
- 29:56Speaker 1: Las Vegas, right, and you go with another desert He
- 29:59Speaker 1: just likes desert. He just likes dessert because the grass
- 30:03Speaker 1: is just killing them out there in Las Vegas for sure.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Now now that now, before we get to oldline degree
- 30:09Speaker 1: dot com, who are you prior to this? Uh? This,
- 30:13Speaker 1: this brainstorm that that that that that that came out.
- 30:16Speaker 1: You love college and you would like any other student.
- 30:18Speaker 1: You know, you got a degree, but bore, it's some
- 30:21Speaker 1: dead weight doing you. And can I ask you how
- 30:23Speaker 1: much your debt were you're in at the time when
- 30:25Speaker 1: you left college? Absolutely? And by the way, ra Sean,
- 30:29Speaker 1: I'm embarrassed to begin because when I start talking about myself,
- 30:33Speaker 1: I feel that around you, I've accomplished so little in
- 30:37Speaker 1: my life when I read your biot about everything, listened
- 30:40Speaker 1: to your show that I'm embarrassed to talk about what
- 30:43Speaker 1: I've done before. But I'll give it a crack. But
- 30:45Speaker 1: please don't be embarrassed because you because of the fact
- 30:47Speaker 1: that you know what I've accomplished is what you will accomplish.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And uh, when you look back on your life because
- 30:53Speaker 1: of the fact that you're a special human being. And
- 30:55Speaker 1: I try to bring individuals on my show who are
- 30:57Speaker 1: making a difference in people's lives, and that's what you
- 30:59Speaker 1: are and sit on a daily basis. It's a passion
- 31:02Speaker 1: job that you're doing. It's something they're fortunate for you,
- 31:04Speaker 1: you can make money off of, and it also has
- 31:06Speaker 1: changed your life and changes the lots of people every day.
- 31:08Speaker 1: So when you say you have not done a lot,
- 31:11Speaker 1: know that what you are doing is affecting a lot.
- 31:14Speaker 1: What we'll thank you for saying that. I really do
- 31:16Speaker 1: have a big dream to make college affordable. And yeah,
- 31:19Speaker 1: you know, I think I took a pretty typical path,
- 31:22Speaker 1: you know, graduate high school, went to a four year university,
- 31:25Speaker 1: got into the workforce, and then only later did I
- 31:29Speaker 1: realize that, wow, I didn't pay off that debt until
- 31:33Speaker 1: I was in my late twenties, and it left a
- 31:37Speaker 1: real mark on me. And I decided, you know, I
- 31:39Speaker 1: I was lucky in that I've exited. I've been in
- 31:42Speaker 1: startups with my whole career. I exited two start up
- 31:45Speaker 1: companies and I was I was around I got to
- 31:47Speaker 1: I really got to sit and reflect and say, what
- 31:49Speaker 1: is the next big mission, what what do I want
- 31:52Speaker 1: to do to make the world a better place and
- 31:55Speaker 1: to love what I do every day? And I decided
- 31:57Speaker 1: that I want to help more people get to college
- 32:01Speaker 1: and not have to deal with all the debt that
- 32:03Speaker 1: surrounds us. And with that being said, now, the amount
- 32:08Speaker 1: that you were in debt was how much it was
- 32:11Speaker 1: probably upwards let me think about this now, probably almost. Yeah,
- 32:16Speaker 1: that's that's that's what I hear a lot. You know,
- 32:17Speaker 1: I was watching TV the other day and uh, and
- 32:20Speaker 1: and that's that's a normal that doesn't that doesn't frighten
- 32:23Speaker 1: me as far as when I hear it thrown out
- 32:25Speaker 1: there because you're talking about four year or four year
- 32:28Speaker 1: institution and uh, you know, a room and board, the lodging,
- 32:32Speaker 1: all that, you know, from start to finish. That's about right.
- 32:35Speaker 1: But at the time when you was every year getting
- 32:38Speaker 1: along wasn't an issue that when you're going there and
- 32:40Speaker 1: you said it needs amount of money. That's that's the
- 32:42Speaker 1: part that I think that students don't understand. It's easy
- 32:45Speaker 1: to get access to this amount of money to pay
- 32:48Speaker 1: for your education, but you never really told the story
- 32:50Speaker 1: of the payback, right, Yeah, that's that's the key because
- 32:54Speaker 1: you're right, you know, college in some sense you will
- 32:58Speaker 1: get the loans to pay for it. They don't. It's
- 33:00Speaker 1: you're right, it's very accessible in that sense. But the
- 33:03Speaker 1: key problem is is that people don't understand until it's
- 33:07Speaker 1: too late that wow, I have to pay this money
- 33:10Speaker 1: back at some point and the interest has been accruing
- 33:13Speaker 1: and it is an incredible sum that can prevent you
- 33:16Speaker 1: from buying your first home or having the flexibility to
- 33:20Speaker 1: choose the right job that you want to make your
- 33:23Speaker 1: debt payment. So yeah, it has a it's a it's
- 33:25Speaker 1: a huge effect. Now they're effect that Lisa, I kind
- 33:28Speaker 1: of mentioned it earlier about online degree dot com. What
- 33:31Speaker 1: exactly is online degree dot com. So the way that
- 33:36Speaker 1: we decided to to to solve this problem is we
- 33:39Speaker 1: have a platform where someone can come on, get started
- 33:42Speaker 1: in sixty seconds, register and take as many colleges and
- 33:46Speaker 1: all the courses as they want. And that could be
- 33:50Speaker 1: that I think where they could earn credit towards their
- 33:52Speaker 1: degree and unlock instant scholarships and discounts towards universities across
- 33:57Speaker 1: the country and it's completely for So really, what we've
- 34:02Speaker 1: done is we've created a free, more accessible, modern alternative
- 34:07Speaker 1: to the community college. And then it's just where it
- 34:11Speaker 1: will help everybody take that first step to go back
- 34:13Speaker 1: to hire us. So, you know, the whole room got
- 34:16Speaker 1: quiet over here when you say it free. Everybody kind
- 34:19Speaker 1: of like, you know, stared at me. But I had
- 34:21Speaker 1: to let you finish your line because you say it free.
- 34:23Speaker 1: You know, you know how to say free to free
- 34:28Speaker 1: dramatic calls one, two or three. And because because so,
- 34:35Speaker 1: because it's the beauty of it is that you know,
- 34:37Speaker 1: online education has like a skyrocket because what type on
- 34:42Speaker 1: the process you thought of online education with the Phoenix
- 34:45Speaker 1: University of Phoenix. You know that all the time University
- 34:48Speaker 1: of Phoenix. Now every major University of Michigan, University Alabama,
- 34:53Speaker 1: University of Houston, all schools have an online program. My daughter,
- 34:57Speaker 1: she's a tennis pro in high school. She's a produ
- 35:00Speaker 1: so she went to the UH University of Miami, you know,
- 35:03Speaker 1: high school UH training. So so when you so, you're
- 35:07Speaker 1: not so you're you're you're getting the audience that's kind
- 35:09Speaker 1: of comfortable, which is type of educational planning. Correct, You're right,
- 35:15Speaker 1: there was this misconception that online only meant the for
- 35:19Speaker 1: profit schools that we've read about the newspapers, But you're right.
- 35:22Speaker 1: The reality is everybody's moving all of their programs online
- 35:26Speaker 1: because there's such a huge demand. Technology has enabled it,
- 35:31Speaker 1: and so that's the future in higher education. The fastest
- 35:36Speaker 1: growing segment is the online education and every state school,
- 35:40Speaker 1: private school, everybody's going in that direction because it is
- 35:44Speaker 1: so convenient for us working adults who you know, we
- 35:48Speaker 1: don't have time to leave our job to go to
- 35:51Speaker 1: campus every day. We don't. We don't, we have our
- 35:53Speaker 1: we've got families, were busy, you know. But the thing
- 35:55Speaker 1: about it is day when I look at and I
- 35:57Speaker 1: talked to you about what you're doing, it feels so
- 36:00Speaker 1: comfortable to be the sell is to individual. It feels
- 36:03Speaker 1: so comfortable to tell people said, look, you can change
- 36:06Speaker 1: your life by making this minor adjustment in your schedule. Ultimately,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I think that we need to have that tough love
- 36:14Speaker 1: with so many people who are not taking that step.
- 36:16Speaker 1: And so now you know there's no more excuses. Right.
- 36:18Speaker 1: I understood why people weren't taking that step when you
- 36:23Speaker 1: looked at the current cost benefit analysis and process to
- 36:26Speaker 1: get started. But now we proved all the excuses. You know,
- 36:30Speaker 1: it could not be easier or more cost effective now
- 36:34Speaker 1: to take that first step. And the first step is
- 36:37Speaker 1: what sir, Come on, let's go and take it to
- 36:38Speaker 1: the finished line. That first step getting started with a
- 36:41Speaker 1: registering for free with online degree dot com. Uh and
- 36:45Speaker 1: uh yeah, that's where the first step and you know
- 36:47Speaker 1: the other thing that makes us a big difference. So
- 36:49Speaker 1: we're Shawn back to your experience when you went back
- 36:51Speaker 1: to community when you're in community college to start with,
- 36:53Speaker 1: because that's the path that so many people take. Absolutely
- 36:56Speaker 1: one of the things that in addition to you know
- 36:59Speaker 1: now that courses can be online, which makes it more accessible.
- 37:03Speaker 1: One thing you probably remember not getting at that community
- 37:05Speaker 1: college was the support and guidance that you really needed
- 37:09Speaker 1: if they say it's there, but unfortunately they never have
- 37:13Speaker 1: enough resources to help every person to help them craft,
- 37:16Speaker 1: figure things out, provide support. That is another of the
- 37:20Speaker 1: key differences is that we provide that kind of supporting
- 37:24Speaker 1: coaching to help people get to where they need to go.
- 37:28Speaker 1: And because ultimately the end of day, these are people,
- 37:30Speaker 1: these are uh, these they need they need that human
- 37:34Speaker 1: touch and that support. You can't just you know, it's
- 37:37Speaker 1: a complicated thing. And that's another key differentia that we
- 37:41Speaker 1: try to provide. Well to tell them about the education,
- 37:43Speaker 1: I'll tell you something about what you're offering, because usually, uh,
- 37:48Speaker 1: this the opportunity is being made available to working students
- 37:52Speaker 1: are adults. Students a lot of adults, students who have families,
- 37:55Speaker 1: a lot of probably single parent households. And when you
- 37:58Speaker 1: try to pursue an education outside of the household, it becomes, uh,
- 38:03Speaker 1: it can become very destructive to the overall family environment.
- 38:06Speaker 1: But when you're at your house and your kids or
- 38:08Speaker 1: your kids or your children are seeing you make a
- 38:11Speaker 1: difference in their in your personal life, it also changes
- 38:14Speaker 1: the atmosphere is home. It makes them want to be
- 38:16Speaker 1: better in their school. It makes them if Mom's doing better,
- 38:19Speaker 1: Dad's trying to do better, then I will do better.
- 38:22Speaker 1: It would create a culture in your house that can
- 38:24Speaker 1: change the value system when you're within your home on
- 38:27Speaker 1: a daily basis. So when I look and I look
- 38:29Speaker 1: at this, and that's why I was happy grant to
- 38:31Speaker 1: have you on my show because sometimes when us an individual,
- 38:34Speaker 1: you know you built this. I'm just looking at the
- 38:36Speaker 1: overall social structure of what your program and your online
- 38:40Speaker 1: dot com online degree dot com format offers to to students,
- 38:44Speaker 1: to the middle class, to the lower middle class, to
- 38:46Speaker 1: the structure, to structure people who can't see uh see
- 38:50Speaker 1: at the front door because they don't have time to
- 38:52Speaker 1: get out the front door. They barely try to get
- 38:54Speaker 1: in the front door because the back door is already shut.
- 38:56Speaker 1: And so your educational opportunities. I would to become a
- 39:00Speaker 1: friend of yours, man because, uh, because I just see
- 39:02Speaker 1: a lot of opportunities for you to grow what you're
- 39:05Speaker 1: trying to do. And I would do with everything within
- 39:07Speaker 1: my power to be able to help you get the
- 39:09Speaker 1: word out, especially in my community. You know, my community,
- 39:12Speaker 1: I feel in any community of color needs to understand
- 39:16Speaker 1: the value of the format that you're offering, because we
- 39:19Speaker 1: are working, uh more than eight hours a day. We
- 39:22Speaker 1: are you know, typically on the low end of the
- 39:25Speaker 1: of the of the payroll opportunities. So so to have
- 39:28Speaker 1: you on my show talking about it, it's really a
- 39:31Speaker 1: blessing to me. Hopefully it's a blessing to my audience
- 39:34Speaker 1: to take advantage of what you're doing. I want to
- 39:36Speaker 1: support you in so many levels because I was that
- 39:38Speaker 1: working adult. That's why I had to go to community college.
- 39:41Speaker 1: I had to drop out of of a four year
- 39:43Speaker 1: institution because I couldn't afford it. I had to go
- 39:45Speaker 1: work a four time job. And when I worked a
- 39:47Speaker 1: four time job, when I left the four tramp job,
- 39:49Speaker 1: I had to go to a community college. And he's
- 39:51Speaker 1: saying he's abolutely right that was the most functional environment
- 39:55Speaker 1: because it was just everybody had that same hustle. They
- 39:58Speaker 1: leave class, break to their ares, go home. And so
- 40:02Speaker 1: you are creating something that I feel is very positive
- 40:05Speaker 1: and very whole to the everyday family lifestyle. Rant Sean,
- 40:10Speaker 1: thank you. Thank you for saying that. You know, you're
- 40:12Speaker 1: you're such an accomplished person who I respect really and
- 40:15Speaker 1: your viewpoint on that is is valuable to me very much.
- 40:19Speaker 1: And you know, I think that what you just said
- 40:21Speaker 1: was very profound that people often forget in that you know,
- 40:25Speaker 1: that paper and that degree is not just the economic
- 40:29Speaker 1: benefit which we all know is there. There's that real
- 40:33Speaker 1: cultural raw um everything within that family which you just
- 40:38Speaker 1: touched on that nobody ever talks about, and that is
- 40:41Speaker 1: that's so important in making people feel better about themselves
- 40:44Speaker 1: and driven. And yeah, that's you know, I'm glad to
- 40:47Speaker 1: be part of that. And guess what you're part of
- 40:49Speaker 1: money Making Conversations Family my friend, and you'll be hearing

- 43:38Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation. The CEO and founder of Mavin de
- 43:42Speaker 1: Sean Emira, Hello and thank you for having me. I
- 43:47Speaker 1: appreciate it. Cool. I really do your California and uh
- 43:51Speaker 1: good your mind? Telling me? What's your educational background, your
- 43:54Speaker 1: little history before we start talking about Yeah, I was
- 43:59Speaker 1: born and raised in Oakland, Um. I went to high
- 44:03Speaker 1: school there. After high school, I went to Hampton University.
- 44:06Speaker 1: So I'm an alum of HBCU. She's a Hampton grad
- 44:13Speaker 1: so happy she's cheering in the background, sir, So all right,
- 44:16Speaker 1: let's go. Yeah. So I, UM, I got really interested
- 44:22Speaker 1: in UM. You know, I wanted to travel when I
- 44:26Speaker 1: got to college, or I've always just sort of wanted to.
- 44:29Speaker 1: I've been curious about the world. So UM, you know,
- 44:32Speaker 1: sophomore year I traveled. I went to Japan for for
- 44:34Speaker 1: six months. I studied abroad there. Ended up doing the
- 44:37Speaker 1: same thing again the next year in Spain. When I
- 44:40Speaker 1: after I graduated, I moved to China. UM and then
- 44:45Speaker 1: and we can get into you know, what I was
- 44:47Speaker 1: doing over there later. But then education wise, I ended
- 44:51Speaker 1: up going back to school. I did an NBA at
- 44:54Speaker 1: Georgia State in Atlanta, UM in between two thousand and
- 44:58Speaker 1: eight and two thousand and ten. In So, now, when
- 45:02Speaker 1: you went to those different places, did you, ah, you
- 45:06Speaker 1: experienced the culture? Did you learn the language? I did.
- 45:10Speaker 1: I was in China for a year and a half straight,
- 45:14Speaker 1: and then for the next several years, I would be
- 45:16Speaker 1: going back in China, back and forth to China, probably
- 45:19Speaker 1: every every couple two to three months. I was going
- 45:22Speaker 1: back and forth to China, UM and so I learned
- 45:25Speaker 1: a great deal both Mandarin at the time. Um, you
- 45:29Speaker 1: know it's it's it's worn off a little bit since then,
- 45:31Speaker 1: but I still can I stick it. I still can
- 45:33Speaker 1: get around. Oh good, good devil. This what what you know?
- 45:36Speaker 1: I always like to explore new opportunities. That's a new
- 45:39Speaker 1: opportunity from a social and a lifestyle standpoint. What what if?
- 45:43Speaker 1: What did you learn from that experience? Because you know
- 45:45Speaker 1: that when we go out and travel, did you are
- 45:48Speaker 1: an African American male and so there are perceptions about us,
- 45:52Speaker 1: uh in different parts of the country. I know I've
- 45:54Speaker 1: experienced that. So were there any perceptions that you had
- 45:57Speaker 1: to overcome you had to deal with in your travels? Um,
- 46:02Speaker 1: there were definitely definitely a lot of you know, perceptions
- 46:05Speaker 1: that people had or misconceptions. I mean in China at
- 46:08Speaker 1: the time and I got in two thousand three, Um,
- 46:12Speaker 1: there was hardly I was. I went to the city
- 46:13Speaker 1: called shen Jen, which is now like a super popping city. Um,
- 46:18Speaker 1: you know, at the time, it was about four million
- 46:20Speaker 1: people there. Now I think there's like fifteen million people.
- 46:23Speaker 1: So just in the past you know, ten years, it's
- 46:26Speaker 1: it's uh, it's grown quite a bit, but there was
- 46:29Speaker 1: hardly any foreigners there at all, um, let alone had
- 46:33Speaker 1: they ever seen any any black people, you know. So uh,
- 46:37Speaker 1: you know, I had students were you know, I taught
- 46:40Speaker 1: English there for a little while, and students to run
- 46:42Speaker 1: up to me and try to touch my my skin
- 46:45Speaker 1: and if they're rubbed off, you know, and they called
- 46:47Speaker 1: me Mr Chaka Lee, you know. Um. And then I
- 46:51Speaker 1: had people there who just straight up didn't believe that
- 46:53Speaker 1: I came from America because they're from what they understood
- 46:58Speaker 1: of the world, and they don't they didn't get a
- 47:00Speaker 1: lot of they don't get a lot of the media
- 47:03Speaker 1: and the images that everybody else gets America is white
- 47:06Speaker 1: people in America is the land of white people in
- 47:09Speaker 1: blond hair and blue eyes. Um. And so they just
- 47:13Speaker 1: didn't even believe that there were black people there, let
- 47:16Speaker 1: alone all of the intricacies of like, you know, the
- 47:21Speaker 1: history of African Americans in in America. So um. You know,
- 47:25Speaker 1: people tended to think I was either from you know,
- 47:28Speaker 1: Africa or you know, or or India or something like that.
- 47:32Speaker 1: And then they had certain you know, they had certain perceptions, um,
- 47:37Speaker 1: of of those countries, um, which weren't always so good right,
- 47:44Speaker 1: they think they think America is the land of the white,
- 47:47Speaker 1: then you you also have to think that that that
- 47:49Speaker 1: there was a backwards view of Africa, you know, very
- 47:53Speaker 1: backwards ignorance, slavery, poverty, violence, you know, exactly need to
- 48:00Speaker 1: be also they're I'm sure they're aware of the slave
- 48:03Speaker 1: slavery too. So so all those negative things dominated Joe present.
- 48:07Speaker 1: So you are you are a torch bearer there? Um, yeah,
- 48:12Speaker 1: I mean it was it was you know, it definitely
- 48:15Speaker 1: felt very you know, pioneering to be out there. That
- 48:17Speaker 1: was hardly as I said, hardly any other foreigners there was.
- 48:22Speaker 1: You know, there was about three or four other black
- 48:24Speaker 1: people that I met when I was out there, you know,
- 48:28Speaker 1: in the city of four million people, and we all
- 48:30Speaker 1: abandoned together and there was two or three. How did
- 48:34Speaker 1: you find them? Now? Well, you know, there would be
- 48:37Speaker 1: certain places in the city where only you know, only
- 48:40Speaker 1: were like foreigners would go to these barns, restaurants or
- 48:44Speaker 1: whatever we're foreigners would convene so they could you know,
- 48:48Speaker 1: um and you know, they would just be a random
- 48:52Speaker 1: black person in there and we were just connect and
- 48:55Speaker 1: be like, hey, you go, what are you doing here?
- 49:00Speaker 1: You know? So UM. Yeah, it was crazy. It was crazy,
- 49:05Speaker 1: but it was you know, it ended up being one
- 49:07Speaker 1: of the most transformative, UM and informative periods of my life.
- 49:13Speaker 1: You know, I learned a lot about myself. I learned
- 49:16Speaker 1: a lot about what I was capable of. UM. You know,
- 49:20Speaker 1: I learned a lot about you know, it put into
- 49:23Speaker 1: context where I came from the country that I came from, UM,
- 49:28Speaker 1: and what was going on outside of America, you know,
- 49:32Speaker 1: and that America wasn't the center of the world UM
- 49:36Speaker 1: and uh. And I grew tremendously from that, and it
- 49:39Speaker 1: became you know, China just became sort of the platform
- 49:42Speaker 1: from which all of my my business and entrepreneurial endeavors
- 49:46Speaker 1: kind of sprang from relationships there. I made amazing relationships there,
- 49:54Speaker 1: um you know, and and also learned how to navigate
- 50:00Speaker 1: UM sourcing products uh. You know, so I went to
- 50:04Speaker 1: hundreds of factories UM figured out you know, the first
- 50:09Speaker 1: thing I started importing from China because I just wanted
- 50:13Speaker 1: to make some money were like sneakers, And so I
- 50:16Speaker 1: saw they had sneakers out there, and I started buying
- 50:18Speaker 1: them and sending them back home, and through that process
- 50:21Speaker 1: learned all about you know, shipping from from China and
- 50:25Speaker 1: freight forwarding and customs and tariffs and UH and all that,
- 50:30Speaker 1: and learn how to negotiate with with the Chinese and
- 50:35Speaker 1: UM how to find different factories and source different products
- 50:40Speaker 1: and figure out you know quality control and who to
- 50:42Speaker 1: trust who not to trust. UM. It was an incredible
- 50:47Speaker 1: It was an incredible UM educational experience. You knew the
- 50:51Speaker 1: language as well. Well. I learned it as I went.
- 50:55Speaker 1: I'll just just sales for you and can other people
- 50:58Speaker 1: around the country or is it localized in the open
- 51:00Speaker 1: in area? So UM. So the hairstylus are we've we've
- 51:05Speaker 1: over the past five years, we've grown to over fifty

- 51:17Speaker 1: year just lost a very new and transformative service UM
