- 0:43Speaker 1: I have on the show because it's really cool the
- 0:45Speaker 1: way she's been able to do that and probably pull
- 0:48Speaker 1: people in and open their eyes about educating them. A
- 0:51Speaker 1: thriller Anybody's Daughter wanted the double a CP Image Award
- 0:54Speaker 1: for Outstanding Fiction. She's also writes writes on an assudent

- 1:14Speaker 1: Please work with the money making conversation, Pamela Samuel's young
- 1:19Speaker 1: thank you, thank you for having me. Gotta let you know.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'll tell you some At the intro, I had to
- 1:24Speaker 1: you know something, what I will not do, Pamela on
- 1:26Speaker 1: my show, A short chance, short change people of what
- 1:29Speaker 1: they've done, because that journey to charge you know, l A,
- 1:35Speaker 1: you know education, tell us about that journey, you know,
- 1:39Speaker 1: because here's it took me seven years to get one degree. Okay,
- 1:44Speaker 1: you know what? And I don't you know. I grew
- 1:46Speaker 1: up in Compton and my product of the competent school system,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and I always saw education as my way. Um why
- 1:54Speaker 1: what what do you because? Because the people that just
- 1:57Speaker 1: talked me into saint education is your out, you know,
- 2:01Speaker 1: because I um, I I've read earlier on My mother
- 2:06Speaker 1: put books in my hand in first grade, the Book
- 2:08Speaker 1: of the Month club. You can get a book every month.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And I saw different worlds. I saw a world that
- 2:12Speaker 1: was different from mine. And to be honest with you,
- 2:15Speaker 1: as a young team, I saw my mother, women in
- 2:18Speaker 1: my mother's lives. I saw how um not having their
- 2:21Speaker 1: own independence changed their lives. You know. One one, one
- 2:25Speaker 1: of one of my aunt tustins became an alcoholic. Another one,
- 2:28Speaker 1: let's just tell it all molested, what a lested a
- 2:31Speaker 1: family member and then she's on her own and she
- 2:33Speaker 1: ends up in the projects. I mean, I just saw
- 2:35Speaker 1: all these women while I had a stable life, family life.
- 2:39Speaker 1: My parents have been married for fifty five years. I
- 2:41Speaker 1: had a stable life. I saw these other women's lives
- 2:45Speaker 1: be deshort. I saw I had a I had my mother.
- 2:47Speaker 1: One of my mother's cousins was a victim of fovel abuse.
- 2:51Speaker 1: And I said, okay, you know what, I gotta be
- 2:52Speaker 1: able to be able to have my own So I
- 2:55Speaker 1: knew as an early child that education was a way
- 2:58Speaker 1: for me to do that. And that's and I was.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I was off to the races. Wow, you know because
- 3:04Speaker 1: when I went So what did you what made you
- 3:06Speaker 1: choose the schools that you went for your education? Because,
- 3:10Speaker 1: like I said, your product of comptom was it trying
- 3:12Speaker 1: to get out of that environment just to see a
- 3:14Speaker 1: different parts of the world, just to be exposed. What
- 3:16Speaker 1: led you and also what led you to law. Um
- 3:20Speaker 1: okay I um, I had a chance as at attempting
- 3:24Speaker 1: high school or to spend a summer at USC. I
- 3:27Speaker 1: think as a tenth or eleven grade. Oh my god,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I was like, my what a world in UFC was
- 3:32Speaker 1: only thirty minutes from my house in Counting. But I
- 3:34Speaker 1: said that's where I wanted to go, and so I
- 3:36Speaker 1: was able to go back, and I set my sights
- 3:38Speaker 1: on USC. I don't think I applied to but a
- 3:40Speaker 1: couple of other schools and I got into USC and
- 3:43Speaker 1: that was that world. Um. And you know, I didn't
- 3:46Speaker 1: go to law school till I was thirty. I finished UM,
- 3:49Speaker 1: I said undergraduate and I pursued uh journalism and I
- 3:53Speaker 1: worked in TV for a while. But I had always
- 3:55Speaker 1: wanted to go to UM law school. But I didn't
- 3:58Speaker 1: know any lawyers. I didn't see a lawyers. And it
- 4:00Speaker 1: took me, uh seven years after after graduating, eight years
- 4:04Speaker 1: to to say, um, I can do this, because I
- 4:08Speaker 1: didn't have a confidence then. You know, there were no
- 4:10Speaker 1: lawyers in my families. I don't think I even talked
- 4:12Speaker 1: to a lawyer before making that decision. But one day
- 4:15Speaker 1: and and I had a real bad day in the
- 4:16Speaker 1: news room. The k didn't come up. A producer yelled
- 4:19Speaker 1: at me and something and something just said pick up
- 4:20Speaker 1: the phone, that we're gonna do this. And we go
- 4:22Speaker 1: back to the days when I was a news writer.
- 4:24Speaker 1: News writer, we were still using tape writers and think
- 4:28Speaker 1: it's the phone called and called, what do I need
- 4:30Speaker 1: to go to law school? Take you gotta take the
- 4:31Speaker 1: laws the mission test. I went to Barnes and Noble
- 4:33Speaker 1: about a study guide. I had three weeks before that
- 4:35Speaker 1: last test at the end of the year to study
- 4:37Speaker 1: for it. Study study, study, study, and got in got
- 4:40Speaker 1: decent enough score to get into UC Berkeley, So you know,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and and I had wanted to go all those years,
- 4:46Speaker 1: but nothing moved me until just getting the day. It's like,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I don't you know what I need to do this?
- 4:50Speaker 1: And I was an older lawsuit most of my most
- 4:52Speaker 1: of classmates for twenty five and under when I was
- 4:54Speaker 1: in law school, and it was it was actually a
- 4:56Speaker 1: great thing that I was thirty because I was more
- 4:58Speaker 1: serious about it. I took, you know, it was just
- 5:00Speaker 1: and it wasn't. And even when I get interviewed for jobs,
- 5:03Speaker 1: because what you didn't mention. I spend my last twenty
- 5:05Speaker 1: five years working is an in house council for Toyota
- 5:09Speaker 1: and what um what? Then going to Luskoo was an
- 5:12Speaker 1: older student was a great thing because I think it
- 5:14Speaker 1: was a lot more mature, right right, right right. You know.
- 5:18Speaker 1: The thing about it is that being a leader that
- 5:21Speaker 1: made that age can often times make you the leader,
- 5:24Speaker 1: the natural leader. And because people are looking at you
- 5:27Speaker 1: saying you can have experiences that allow you to look different,
- 5:31Speaker 1: walk different, talk different. And so when I went out,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I'm going through your bario they said, you're you're a
- 5:36Speaker 1: frequent speaker on these topics, which are really extreme topics.
- 5:40Speaker 1: They need to be talked about, child sex trafficking, bullying,
- 5:45Speaker 1: online safety, fiction writing, self empowerment, and pursuing your passion.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Let's break this down a little bit. Why are you
- 5:55Speaker 1: speaking on child sex trafficking? You know the book that
- 5:59Speaker 1: wanted No lap in an Image Award. Uh. The idea
- 6:02Speaker 1: for that came out of a conversation with the guy
- 6:04Speaker 1: back in I don't know two thousand and ten or
- 6:06Speaker 1: eleven who said kids were being trafficked in the US
- 6:09Speaker 1: and when nobody was talking about chise, that ex trafficking man,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and like, what are you talking about? No no, No,
- 6:13Speaker 1: that's the Mexico, that's the Philippines, that Russia. And he
- 6:17Speaker 1: said none of the other games, the games of trafficking girls.
- 6:20Speaker 1: And so I went home and began to research it,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and I was like, it blew me away, and it
- 6:24Speaker 1: was happening in our community that nobody was talking about it,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and that formed the idea for anybody's daughter, just like UM.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Christmas Day last year, friends to me an article about
- 6:34Speaker 1: two nine year old girls who had hanged themselves, and
- 6:37Speaker 1: I'm like, what nine years old? How? What? How does
- 6:41Speaker 1: the nine year old know how to hang themselves? And
- 6:43Speaker 1: I ended up researching that and learned at the suicide
- 6:46Speaker 1: rate for African American kids under the age of twelve,
- 6:50Speaker 1: it's twice that of like kids, what what? What? How
- 6:53Speaker 1: could that be? And that brought me to right start
- 6:55Speaker 1: you to protect. I mean, while I like, I like
- 6:57Speaker 1: legal thrillers, um, but I also like to teach something
- 7:01Speaker 1: in my book. So UM, I try to give you
- 7:04Speaker 1: a good mystery, a good legal story, but at the
- 7:06Speaker 1: same time teach you something. And I think I've done that.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And before I get too for us say I want
- 7:11Speaker 1: to I don't think you remember we have a we
- 7:13Speaker 1: have a personal connection you and I because two of
- 7:16Speaker 1: my closest friends are rich Henderson and Tarapin. On that family.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You really need to stop talking about my sisters like
- 7:24Speaker 1: that in public now totally. And you don't remember back
- 7:29Speaker 1: in two thousand three were you and I were sitting
- 7:32Speaker 1: in Felicia Henderson's backyard at a party, had to be
- 7:35Speaker 1: two thousand three or four in Pasadena, in Pasadena. In Pasadena,
- 7:39Speaker 1: I had just gotten my first book deal and I
- 7:42Speaker 1: was not happy. I was not happy with the amount
- 7:45Speaker 1: of money and I had and you and I was
- 7:47Speaker 1: thinking about turning it down, and you said, so you
- 7:50Speaker 1: said the following to me. You said, you said, if
- 7:52Speaker 1: you only got one book to write, get your foot
- 7:55Speaker 1: in the door and take that. You know, if you've
- 7:58Speaker 1: only got one book to write, turned down that deal
- 8:00Speaker 1: and go back and shop it, get the best of
- 8:02Speaker 1: You can't say if you got twenty books in you
- 8:04Speaker 1: take that deal, get your foot in the door, and
- 8:06Speaker 1: you can you can make more money. Later you said,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you said, did anybody else offer your book there? And
- 8:10Speaker 1: I was like no. He said, you need to get
- 8:11Speaker 1: your foot in that door. And what I can't do
- 8:18Speaker 1: Man ninety eight sixteen years later, you and I are
- 8:21Speaker 1: talking about money making conversations because if I had turned
- 8:23Speaker 1: down that deal, who knew when my next deal would
- 8:26Speaker 1: have come? Well, you know, and this is first of
- 8:29Speaker 1: all you I love your energy. Were talking to you know,
- 8:31Speaker 1: my producers in the room when they listened to the
- 8:34Speaker 1: show as well. We love your energy. First of all,
- 8:35Speaker 1: You're just a natural passion that is crazy good. But
- 8:40Speaker 1: you know I remember that because Felicia, that's my I
- 8:42Speaker 1: call him my baby sister. Uh taught me how to
- 8:45Speaker 1: write the titcom you know. And then you have you
- 8:48Speaker 1: have Saraphiny Johnson, who I think saved my career. You know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: she brought me on to the Parkers as a consultant
- 8:57Speaker 1: at the time where I didn't know where I was,
- 8:59Speaker 1: and that right was right when I right before when
- 9:01Speaker 1: I started managing Steve Harvey and basically the rest is
- 9:03Speaker 1: history how how I impacted UM television and radio, social
- 9:09Speaker 1: media with him. But that's the period I met you,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and so I was still finding myself. But I was
- 9:13Speaker 1: very opinionated because people just always come up to me,
- 9:16Speaker 1: you know, because my voice was really big in Los Angeles,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and so when I was speaking to you, I remember
- 9:20Speaker 1: because you were not you. You felt you needed more.
- 9:23Speaker 1: You know you you feel and I get and I
- 9:25Speaker 1: get a lot of people like that. I always go,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you know, because I always tell people, don't look at
- 9:29Speaker 1: what other people are making. Let's talk about you. Let's
- 9:32Speaker 1: let's keep it focused on you. Okay, okay, cool? You
- 9:34Speaker 1: know who? Why are you? Why are you all out
- 9:36Speaker 1: of out of whack with this deal here? It's a deal.
- 9:40Speaker 1: And I always tell people that I've done a lot
- 9:42Speaker 1: of things Pamela for free, to get the opportunity to
- 9:45Speaker 1: get paid and and so. And I always tell people
- 9:48Speaker 1: that I remember when I was at the Warner Brothers. Uh.
- 9:51Speaker 1: I remember I went to them, and I because when
- 9:53Speaker 1: I left Me and the boys, I was an executive
- 9:56Speaker 1: story at IT. And so when I it to Warner Brothers,
- 10:01Speaker 1: they kept me as an executive story at IT. And
- 10:04Speaker 1: I told I told the people that want to say, man,
- 10:07Speaker 1: just promote me. You don't have to pay me, just
- 10:10Speaker 1: promote me, because I knew it was more important to
- 10:12Speaker 1: have that versus income. The image I would project the image.
- 10:17Speaker 1: So my conversation when I was talking to you, this
- 10:19Speaker 1: is in Pasadena. I can clearly see you now because
- 10:22Speaker 1: that was you know, they sent me photos. She looks fairy, familiar,
- 10:25Speaker 1: she looks fair for me, and so and so. So
- 10:28Speaker 1: I always looking at everybody, trying to do my research,
- 10:30Speaker 1: because when I was talking to you, it was about
- 10:34Speaker 1: trying to slow you down and realize this is the
- 10:39Speaker 1: next day. I was to say, I don't want that.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Find something else and you and I thought about what
- 10:45Speaker 1: you said. I said, he's right, I got twenty books
- 10:47Speaker 1: in me. Let me take this, and and other people
- 10:50Speaker 1: I know still get rejection letters. Let me take this.
- 10:53Speaker 1: You saved me. Yeah, well, you know, you know the
- 10:55Speaker 1: thing about it. You listened, and so the same passion
- 10:58Speaker 1: that you have now is what I heard in that backyard.
- 11:02Speaker 1: And and also one thing about it. I always felt
- 11:05Speaker 1: that people who hung around Felicia and Sarah were cool people,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and so because they know I don't come out and
- 11:11Speaker 1: just just just just hang out and stuff like that.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So so you got that pass So so when you
- 11:16Speaker 1: were talking to me, we're going, okay, let me just
- 11:18Speaker 1: listen to what she said. So I just want to
- 11:20Speaker 1: walk off. She know, she let me. Just please listen
- 11:23Speaker 1: to me. You have an opportunity to do something that
- 11:26Speaker 1: nobody else has had its half right now, I don't
- 11:28Speaker 1: know what they're getting paid over there on the left side.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Get in, get your foot in the door, show the
- 11:35Speaker 1: world your gifts, and guess what We're on money making
- 11:38Speaker 1: conversations going in because and now what we're gonna do.
- 11:45Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about this this book and how we're
- 11:47Speaker 1: gonna promote it, because that's what I do now. I'm
- 11:50Speaker 1: a marketer and I'm a brand, and I sell. I
- 11:54Speaker 1: promote people's UH values, and I promote their their brands.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I promote their products so they can be wealthy. I
- 12:02Speaker 1: think that's the key that we're trying to get. I've
- 12:03Speaker 1: been doing it for corporations like Forward State Farm Home Depot.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Now I'm doing it on money making conversations with individuals
- 12:09Speaker 1: and small businesses. And guess what, I'm happy, Pamela. I
- 12:12Speaker 1: am happy when we come back and we'll talk more
- 12:14Speaker 1: because now you know, she she got me all fired up.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Now now because now that that picture, now everything connect
- 12:19Speaker 1: the dot and I'm anna call Forelicia Henderson, who has
- 12:22Speaker 1: a development deal with twenty centry Fox right now, and
- 12:25Speaker 1: and then uh. I talked to Sarah a couple of
- 12:27Speaker 1: weeks ago when I was at the doing that that
- 12:30Speaker 1: Thanksgiving spread for Kelly Clarkson show. She bought all my groceries.
- 12:35Speaker 1: So this is cool. This is cool. We're right back
- 12:37Speaker 1: more money Making Conversations Rashan McDonald and my girl, Pamela
- 12:42Speaker 1: Samuel's young hw This Rashan McDonald. You're listening to Money
- 12:46Speaker 1: Making Conversation. My podcast, my radio show is syndicated. It's
- 12:50Speaker 1: on Series ex Samson Alexas on Spotify. There's a lot
- 12:54Speaker 1: of formats out there that are vuying to put me on,
- 12:57Speaker 1: and I'm happy to put them on because it allows
- 12:59Speaker 1: my message to be meet more people. And that's the
- 13:01Speaker 1: whole purpose of money Making Conversations to interview individuals, allow
- 13:05Speaker 1: them to share their stories, and I don't want their
- 13:07Speaker 1: story to become your story because their stories are unique.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Their patterns to and how they achieve success is the
- 13:13Speaker 1: gifts that God gave them. Your gifts are different. They
- 13:16Speaker 1: may be similar in the genre, or the range, or
- 13:19Speaker 1: or the thought process, but your gifts are difference. So
- 13:21Speaker 1: achieved the amount of work that you can achieve based
- 13:24Speaker 1: on who you are and what you can achieve. Right
- 13:26Speaker 1: before we left, Pamela share a story about when we
- 13:30Speaker 1: first met because when I was putting together a presentation,
- 13:33Speaker 1: her face looked for me, but I couldn't connect the thoughts.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And one of the conversations that came out of the
- 13:37Speaker 1: conversation when I first met her Seraphity Saraf Johnson complete
- 13:42Speaker 1: that last name, Felicia Henderson. Met her in the backyard
- 13:45Speaker 1: of Felicia Henderson House, and my whole conversation, I've always
- 13:48Speaker 1: told the people, stop looking at other people's yards, stop
- 13:52Speaker 1: trying to figure out what other people are making. Look
- 13:55Speaker 1: at your offer and figure out what you want to
- 13:57Speaker 1: do with that opportunity. And that's what our converse station.
- 14:00Speaker 1: And look at her now success, you know, because she listened,
- 14:05Speaker 1: and so many people I don't want to listen because
- 14:07Speaker 1: they want to run on their wine and complaint I
- 14:10Speaker 1: should get more. I have more value. I have done
- 14:13Speaker 1: a lot of free stuff. I have been all over
- 14:15Speaker 1: the country telling jokes for seven or five dollars. I've
- 14:17Speaker 1: gotten on planes and just showed up for meetings that
- 14:21Speaker 1: it would just meets. They would just create relationships. And
- 14:25Speaker 1: you know, that's how it really works in this business.
- 14:27Speaker 1: It is truly relationships. Correct, Pamela, that's right, that's right.
- 14:30Speaker 1: It's who you know, because you know it's you know,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, I may go to Smithy said, oh you
- 14:35Speaker 1: do all these book club meets. Why would you go
- 14:36Speaker 1: spend um uh two hours meeting with five women you
- 14:42Speaker 1: never know? I have got I've got gone a book
- 14:44Speaker 1: club meeting spinner in five minutes. Where I just did
- 14:47Speaker 1: a book club meeting with a group in Jackson, Mississippi.
- 14:50Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with them for an hour. One
- 14:52Speaker 1: of them recommended to somebody, now, somebody from Jackson's flying
- 14:55Speaker 1: me out in April to be a keynote speaker for
- 14:57Speaker 1: their event. So you know what it's it's each on
- 15:00Speaker 1: poor one. You don't never know connection. It's not about
- 15:02Speaker 1: the money, give me this before I do that. But
- 15:04Speaker 1: also it's also that devaluing the opportunity, because that's what
- 15:09Speaker 1: people do. You know, somebody walking the room, well, I
- 15:13Speaker 1: don't think that might be the person who can who
- 15:14Speaker 1: makes the decision that you would be rude to. Okay,
- 15:17Speaker 1: are you ignoring? Are you over here over over with
- 15:21Speaker 1: the happy group that can't make any decisions. They all
- 15:24Speaker 1: allowed and doing their things, but the decision makers in
- 15:26Speaker 1: the corner just just taking everything in, making everything happen,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and that's what it really is, and that's that's what
- 15:33Speaker 1: that's really compelled me to do this show. It came
- 15:35Speaker 1: telled me to do this show money Making Conversation because Pam,
- 15:39Speaker 1: I had so many cool experiences in my life and
- 15:42Speaker 1: everyone's been different. I met so many unique individuals like you,
- 15:45Speaker 1: and you know, Nick Cannon shares a similar story a
- 15:47Speaker 1: lot like Anthony's shares a similar story. There's so many
- 15:49Speaker 1: individuals who come on this show and reminded me of
- 15:51Speaker 1: ra Sean. You remember when I asked you this or
- 15:54Speaker 1: you memoration and I went, oh, yeah, it was so funny.
- 15:57Speaker 1: I was. I was. I was on the flight coming
- 15:59Speaker 1: from Philadelphia in September and Maori Hardwick, you know he
- 16:04Speaker 1: plays got some power and uh, he just happened was
- 16:07Speaker 1: in first class. He just happened to sit in the
- 16:08Speaker 1: window seat next to me and uh he and I said,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and I said, I managed Stephen Smith. If I said,
- 16:14Speaker 1: you know, I know your boy o mariik uh you
- 16:16Speaker 1: know Stephen A. Smith, he goes, oh yeah, yeah, that's
- 16:19Speaker 1: my boy. And then he kept looking at me. He went,
- 16:22Speaker 1: you look familiar. I went, no, no, we never met.
- 16:25Speaker 1: We never met. And he said. He said, uh, yes,
- 16:30Speaker 1: we have. He said, I met you I was twenty
- 16:32Speaker 1: five years old. I said, I said, I said, huh
- 16:35Speaker 1: he said, yeah, I said, and he started Holly car
- 16:39Speaker 1: Carter che He started calling out name. I want yes,
- 16:42Speaker 1: I know that moting. He said yes. He said. I
- 16:45Speaker 1: used to hear hustle your conversations because man used to
- 16:48Speaker 1: give out advice. But I was at the time. You know,
- 16:50Speaker 1: I wasn't. I wasn't right to really sit down and
- 16:52Speaker 1: listen to you. But the advice that you would give
- 16:54Speaker 1: out I used today and I realized that that's my life. Really,
- 16:59Speaker 1: that is who I am, you know, that is what
- 17:01Speaker 1: I do. This is this show is part of the message.
- 17:04Speaker 1: And when I talk to individuals like you to give
- 17:07Speaker 1: relatable stories that the reason I really love what you
- 17:10Speaker 1: do is that you're taking socially conscious issues and then
- 17:14Speaker 1: putting it into story, which to me is an education.
- 17:18Speaker 1: It means that allows people to believe that, okay, this
- 17:21Speaker 1: makes sense because so many things are fictionalized, and then
- 17:25Speaker 1: it doesn't have any credibility, so people that ignore it
- 17:27Speaker 1: that had never happened to me, And like you said
- 17:29Speaker 1: earlier in that interviewed about you, know, you know, kids
- 17:33Speaker 1: under African Americans, kids under toyl you know what I mean,
- 17:38Speaker 1: the suicide? Why what problems are they dealing exactly exactly? Well,
- 17:43Speaker 1: you know, yeah, I'm having learned about this whole bullying thing.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I mean, you know, because because the first you know,
- 17:48Speaker 1: you know, the whole thing, six or stones don't worry
- 17:50Speaker 1: about it's not a big deal. But it's a different
- 17:52Speaker 1: it's a different generation of kids, and it's some different
- 17:56Speaker 1: stuff going on for you. And I weren't a lot
- 17:58Speaker 1: of times with a kids today see everything you know
- 18:01Speaker 1: when we were when when when we were raising I'm
- 18:03Speaker 1: sixty one and kid, you know when you come in
- 18:06Speaker 1: the room with stuff on TV, parents say this, brown
- 18:08Speaker 1: folks nothing to These kids are exposed to everything. And
- 18:11Speaker 1: then on top of that, they don't learn how to
- 18:14Speaker 1: fall and get back up. Everybody gets a trophy because
- 18:16Speaker 1: everybody is disappointed. Nobody you know, nobody know so so
- 18:20Speaker 1: they're not MATCHI kids. So they don't have any independence.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Parents are running them here in there, so they can't
- 18:24Speaker 1: think for themselves. So the first time somebody goes something
- 18:27Speaker 1: goes wrong at school, I see I personally that So
- 18:29Speaker 1: I have read this in where I think there's a
- 18:31Speaker 1: highly sensitivity and it's like a lot rights is over
- 18:34Speaker 1: and I'm looking at all these pictures of these babies,
- 18:37Speaker 1: these babies taking what has the nine you don't know
- 18:40Speaker 1: how to hang themselves because they're exposed to too much.
- 18:43Speaker 1: For one right, you know, we have some work to do.
- 18:46Speaker 1: You know. It's really interesting because when I you know,
- 18:48Speaker 1: bullying hits home with me with my daughter. I remember
- 18:50Speaker 1: when she's being bullied by three boys in school, and
- 18:54Speaker 1: and I remember my wife, you know, she know she's
- 18:57Speaker 1: let me handless, let me handless. You know it. A
- 19:00Speaker 1: couple of weeks went by, you know, I said, it
- 19:02Speaker 1: has just been wrapped up yet, because you know when
- 19:05Speaker 1: Rushin goes in there gonna be a little different conversation,
- 19:09Speaker 1: could be a little bit different. And so you know,
- 19:11Speaker 1: there was a there was a school. You know, I
- 19:13Speaker 1: would just be real, like you said, keep it really,
- 19:15Speaker 1: gonna keep it real now. And so you know it's
- 19:18Speaker 1: one of those you know, religious schools. You know, they're
- 19:20Speaker 1: always praying and everything. So I came in there that
- 19:24Speaker 1: the principal school and the three teachers were in there
- 19:27Speaker 1: and myself and and I said, well, to my understanding,
- 19:30Speaker 1: My wife has been discussing the bullying incidents that have
- 19:33Speaker 1: been curring to have been happening to my daughter. She's
- 19:36Speaker 1: not happy. I said, uh, I said, you guys know
- 19:39Speaker 1: about these little boys here. And then I remember the principle,
- 19:42Speaker 1: said can we pray? I said, no, we're not gonna
- 19:45Speaker 1: pray right now. I said, maybe after I'm finished with
- 19:50Speaker 1: this conversation I have with you guys. If y'all feel
- 19:53Speaker 1: like praying with me, then then we're good. But we're
- 19:56Speaker 1: not gonna act like I care a BYuT what's going
- 19:58Speaker 1: on in the school with a pray. So they went, okay.
- 20:04Speaker 1: I told him teachers, I said, look, I told him this.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I told him, look, I said, you're doing a disservice.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I said, oh, y'all doing this service as a young man. Okay,
- 20:13Speaker 1: because we're there. And then I don't know where their
- 20:15Speaker 1: parents and I don't care about their parents. All don't
- 20:17Speaker 1: know if they go to school with my daughter. And
- 20:19Speaker 1: I said that that's what happens, and and and and
- 20:22Speaker 1: and believe me, the next day they stopped bullying my daughter.
- 20:25Speaker 1: They all apologized because because I stepped in and was
- 20:30Speaker 1: honest about the situation. When I look at situation. And
- 20:33Speaker 1: guess what, my child could have been one of those
- 20:35Speaker 1: under twelves that you're talking about, because she's exposed to
- 20:39Speaker 1: a lot and a lot of it's not good. Okay,
- 20:43Speaker 1: you know, and and and so so I say, a
- 20:45Speaker 1: lot of it goes back to parenting. You know, we
- 20:48Speaker 1: get so caught up in the you know, two two
- 20:51Speaker 1: parents work in the household. We turned these schools into
- 20:54Speaker 1: babysitting centers, you know, instead of we dropped them off
- 20:59Speaker 1: early for the school opens, pick them up late, schools
- 21:02Speaker 1: way closed, and so they getting you know, put them
- 21:06Speaker 1: on the school bus. And don't hear that the school
- 21:08Speaker 1: bus situation is not a good situation. And I hear you.
- 21:12Speaker 1: And when I hear that, I go with Sean, But
- 21:14Speaker 1: didn't that kind of happened when yes, it did happen
- 21:16Speaker 1: when I was growing up. But I didn't have social media.
- 21:19Speaker 1: I didn't have I didn't have Internet, I didn't have
- 21:22Speaker 1: all kinds of things that can drive me into a
- 21:25Speaker 1: box of craziness by being by showing me a reality
- 21:29Speaker 1: which was really a fictional reality because it's on YouTube exactly,
- 21:34Speaker 1: and so you know, and one thing somebody pointing out
- 21:36Speaker 1: recently is that in our day, the bullying actually gotta
- 21:39Speaker 1: reprieve when you went home because the bullying, you know,
- 21:41Speaker 1: the bullying stopped you at home. But today they're on
- 21:44Speaker 1: social media, on Instagram, and these kids are closing the
- 21:47Speaker 1: things that go kill yourself. Yes, we hate you Instagram
- 21:51Speaker 1: and Facebook, and it's like it's it's relentless. Yes, that's
- 21:53Speaker 1: what their young ladies don't encourt right now for telling
- 21:56Speaker 1: her boyfriend to kill himself. You know, you go go
- 22:00Speaker 1: to yourself. And now you're only trying to show her
- 22:01Speaker 1: that she had text messages she was telling him to stop,
- 22:04Speaker 1: but she did tell him to go kill himself. She
- 22:06Speaker 1: did say that though she may have tried to stop
- 22:09Speaker 1: a lot of those cases, there are a lot of
- 22:11Speaker 1: those cases and it's it's stunning. So so, so how
- 22:14Speaker 1: do you do your research for your books? Well, e
- 22:17Speaker 1: aentually when I read that first article, um, I uh
- 22:22Speaker 1: just and then I found a ton of them. So
- 22:25Speaker 1: then from there I went to I need to talk
- 22:27Speaker 1: to somebody. This year I talked to mental health professorals
- 22:30Speaker 1: and it's so amazing that I love just love people
- 22:32Speaker 1: because when you tell people you're trying to do something,
- 22:34Speaker 1: they think they're gonna help you. I reached. I ran
- 22:37Speaker 1: across the interview with a woman Donna, Donna Holland Barnes At.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Donna Barnes At. She's an associate professor piatry I think
- 22:46Speaker 1: at Howard University. She was more than willing to help me.
- 22:49Speaker 1: She also read the manuscript and was able to help
- 22:52Speaker 1: me tweak thing. I found another guy sports and um
- 22:56Speaker 1: he was a professor of psychiatriat knew you y have universe.
- 23:00Speaker 1: These people who and he read the manuscript, you know,
- 23:03Speaker 1: and they helped me with things that I just understand, Like,
- 23:05Speaker 1: for instance, in that community mental health professionals, they don't
- 23:07Speaker 1: like you to say committed suicide. They want you to
- 23:10Speaker 1: say died by suicide or took their own lives because
- 23:13Speaker 1: because we just commit it cast blame. And I didn't
- 23:16Speaker 1: understand commit. When you say somebody committed suicide, that means
- 23:20Speaker 1: you're casting blame on them that they made a choice,
- 23:22Speaker 1: because you don't think people committed cancer and people who
- 23:25Speaker 1: suffer from from who take their own lives. There is
- 23:28Speaker 1: a problem there and it is most likely depressions. We
- 23:31Speaker 1: don't diagnose. We don't look at childhood depressions. Um, Um,
- 23:36Speaker 1: we don't. We don't even think about it. We don't,
- 23:38Speaker 1: you know. Um, a lot of these kids have have
- 23:40Speaker 1: have troubled life at home. Um, maybe there's there's things
- 23:43Speaker 1: with their parents. In my in my book, my my
- 23:47Speaker 1: thirteen year old character had lost her father six months earlier.
- 23:50Speaker 1: So kids since suffer from depression just like us. So
- 23:54Speaker 1: I I really wanted to to raise these issues because
- 23:58Speaker 1: if I had written a nonfiction book about bullying in suicide,
- 24:01Speaker 1: nobody would pick it up. And and I'm a little
- 24:04Speaker 1: afraid even now that people are all bullying all suicide,
- 24:07Speaker 1: I don't want to read that and shy away from
- 24:09Speaker 1: it because I was almost I was also trying to
- 24:11Speaker 1: promote it by not mentioning suicide. I was afraid it
- 24:15Speaker 1: was would scare people off. And my mentor said to me, then,
- 24:18Speaker 1: you know what you're doing the same thing that that
- 24:20Speaker 1: that that people are doing when they when we talk
- 24:23Speaker 1: about HIV and other things that we also people You know,
- 24:26Speaker 1: I know people who have died from HIV, and you
- 24:28Speaker 1: know that at the funeral, they'd be talking about cancer.
- 24:30Speaker 1: When we're hiding it. We're not talking about it. We
- 24:33Speaker 1: need to talk about it. Our babies are killing themselves
- 24:36Speaker 1: and we need to talk about it. And that's what
- 24:38Speaker 1: I hope, that's what I've tried to do. Wow, reading
- 24:41Speaker 1: about the death by suicide of two nine year old
- 24:44Speaker 1: girl sparked the idea of Pamela to write Failure to Protect.
- 24:48Speaker 1: The articles are attached My friend, UM, did now you
- 24:52Speaker 1: have a you have a version is out this month
- 24:55Speaker 1: for for young adults. This right, because I wanted to
- 24:58Speaker 1: write because there's a there's you know, I got give
- 25:00Speaker 1: it is what they want. Look checking this institude kids,
- 25:07Speaker 1: because you know, because my villain in the book is
- 25:08Speaker 1: a principle because a lot of times these these you know,
- 25:12Speaker 1: I love teachers and I love educators, and they have
- 25:15Speaker 1: a tough job. Okay, but there are sometimes I don't
- 25:18Speaker 1: want to deal with all that foolishness, Like in your situation,
- 25:21Speaker 1: you shouldn't have had to go down there to solve
- 25:23Speaker 1: that problem. My villain was the principle to that. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 25:26Speaker 1: should they should have solved that problem. But my villain
- 25:29Speaker 1: is a principal who was a little bit more concerned
- 25:31Speaker 1: about her career and her and her her school being
- 25:34Speaker 1: being accused of bullying than dealing with this situation. Absolutely
- 25:38Speaker 1: that's true. And this because a younger, a young adult
- 25:41Speaker 1: version of failure to protect goals on sale this month. Now,
- 25:44Speaker 1: will you send me a link of banners so I
- 25:45Speaker 1: can put on my social media. I will absolutely do that.
- 25:49Speaker 1: And what I'm doing is I'm doing my own version
- 25:51Speaker 1: for Cyber Monday's. Like I have Paddler Bell in there.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I got a girl lovedy Love and there got Tina
- 25:57Speaker 1: Live for she has a great book that I have
- 25:58Speaker 1: in there and know, so I'm doing my best. I
- 26:02Speaker 1: got ninety seven thousand fan club members, that's just that.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Then I got over eight hundred thousand fan club Facebook members,
- 26:09Speaker 1: so I got that. I got the Instagram, I got
- 26:11Speaker 1: the Twitter. So I'm just letting you know, Pamela, we
- 26:13Speaker 1: met in the backyard. In that backyard many years ago,
- 26:17Speaker 1: Felicia Henderson still my girl, Sarah Finished, still my little sister.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And I'm telling you right now, I'm so proud of
- 26:25Speaker 1: what you accomplishing. My job right now is to continue
- 26:27Speaker 1: you down that path of success. So whatever you give
- 26:30Speaker 1: me and asked me to do for you, I honestly
- 26:32Speaker 1: will tell you right now, I will do it for you. Okay,
- 26:35Speaker 1: thank you so much. I'm also that the audio book
- 26:38Speaker 1: goes on self. I'm I'm. I'm still a couple of
- 26:40Speaker 1: weeks away from the young adult, but the audiobook goes
- 26:43Speaker 1: on sale in ten days and young actor Larry Hering
- 26:47Speaker 1: is my narrator. Okay, cool, get the link to me
- 26:49Speaker 1: in ten days so we can put it out there
- 26:51Speaker 1: and get it sold. And like I said in January,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I willna put another one out, so like today, I
- 26:56Speaker 1: have one going out with Okay, like you go fight again.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Thank you for calling money making conversations, and thank you
- 27:03Speaker 1: for reminding me
