- 0:00The average home contains hundreds of plastics chemicals
- 0:03that are synthetic. What is 1 exposure?
- 0:05The average home that is a lot more dangerous than most.
- 0:08People realize these phthalates are endocrine disruptors.
- 0:11Your hormones tell every single cell of your body what to do.
- 0:14So when that system gets disrupted, it can throw all
- 0:17kinds of things off balance. How can people start the process
- 0:19of detoxifying their homes without feeling?
- 0:22Overwhelmed. Laundry detergent's a big one.
- 0:24We're washing our clothes and our bedding in it, and then they
- 0:26stay on our bodies all day every day.
- 0:28If you're in your bed for at least a third of your life,
- 0:31you're just laying up against all of these chemicals.
- 0:33How do you determine whether something is toxic or not?
- 0:36It's really simple because all you have to do is.
- 0:38What about microwaves? A microbiologist studied and
- 0:41found that shoes contain more fecal matter than toilet seats.
- 0:45Public toilet. Seats.
- 0:46I didn't know that. That's crazy.
- 0:51Shana Holman, welcome to the podcast.
- 0:53Thank you so much for. Having me, I'm excited.
- 0:55You recently wrote a book on detoxing your household, and
- 1:01this is something that a lot of people are becoming more
- 1:04concerned with because they're learning and the research is
- 1:06coming out about all of the toxins that are in our
- 1:09environments. What is 1 everyday product that
- 1:12most families trust that you would never use?
- 1:15I would say. We're down on the brands today.
- 1:18Laundry detergent's a big one, but there are a lot of brands
- 1:21that people use that I used to use.
- 1:22I think that's that's one that we really got to think about
- 1:25because we're washing our clothes and our bedding in it
- 1:28and then they stay on our bodies all day every day, or especially
- 1:31when we're sleeping. You're in your bed for at least
- 1:34a third of your life and that's where you're getting all kinds
- 1:36of restoration happening for your body and detoxing and
- 1:40you're just laying up against all of these chemicals and
- 1:42fragrances all night. So that's probably a big one.
- 1:45What do you recommend then? If it if you're saying, I mean,
- 1:47yeah. No laundry detergent.
- 1:49Yeah. And I, I went through a period
- 1:51of trying to make my own laundry detergent.
- 1:52Don't recommend that. Some people have success.
- 1:54I went years really trying to make it work.
- 1:56And it it was soap, not detergent.
- 1:58So it did not work. But there are some really good
- 2:00options available now and more than when I started.
- 2:03I started all this in 2013 and there were really very few
- 2:07options then, although there still were some.
- 2:09Now you can go to Target and find something that's a little
- 2:11less toxic. How do you determine that?
- 2:14Just look for one that's fragrance free.
- 2:16That would be a great start, yeah.
- 2:17And there's a lot of other things that you can look for in
- 2:19there and really whittle it down.
- 2:21But if you can find one without fragrance, you've you've already
- 2:23made a great start. I think some people are have the
- 2:26mentality that just everything is toxic so yeah maybe don't buy
- 2:29the stuff with fragrance in it, but everything really is toxic
- 2:32so making little changes is only going to do so much so why even
- 2:37try? Well, that's a really good
- 2:40point. But we are doing impact to our
- 2:42body all day, every day, whether we are intending to or not.
- 2:46So being more intentional about it is going to make a big
- 2:48difference. And I have.
- 2:50I started this by making very few small changes and it
- 2:53completely radicalized my life and changed my health and so
- 2:56much so that it couldn't stop talking about it.
- 2:58So the people around me started to make really subtle small
- 3:01changes too, and they started to see major changes very quickly
- 3:05too. And the people that have stuck
- 3:07with it and kept to these small little changes that seem
- 3:11unimportant, over time they have greater impact.
- 3:14So I've seen people really, really revolutionize their
- 3:16health just by doing these very simple things.
- 3:19What is 1 exposure? And this could be to a product
- 3:22or to a habit of how the family operates, like, I don't know,
- 3:26burning candles, Like I know some people have concerns with
- 3:28that. But one exposure in the average
- 3:30home? That is a lot more dangerous
- 3:32than most people realize. Indoor air pollution in general
- 3:35is probably the worst thing that's going on in our homes,
- 3:38but indoor air pollution, indoor air pollution.
- 3:40So that's not just fragrance, though, that's also chemicals.
- 3:43Yeah. So I think it's EPA says that
- 3:45and I'm going to get the number wrong here, but that indoor air
- 3:48pollution is air pollution in our homes is 10, up to 100 times
- 3:53more polluted than outdoor air, even in big municipal areas.
- 3:57That's crazy. It's really crazy.
- 3:59But you think about it, we're in these boxes and our homes have
- 4:02all been designed to be, you know, to keep the cool air in
- 4:05better and keep the hot air out better.
- 4:06So they're like little traps where it's trapping all this air
- 4:09inside and so it's concentrated. Also, there are a lot of
- 4:13different items in our homes that can be contributing to
- 4:15this. One of the things is dust.
- 4:17Dust carries all kinds of stuff in it that you don't really want
- 4:20to know about, like insect parts and dead body cells, but also
- 4:23volatile organic compounds and things like the the fragrances,
- 4:27the phthalates and formaldehyde from our furniture.
- 4:30So dust can be pretty problematic on its own.
- 4:33But then also, you know, our furniture is treated with flame
- 4:36retardants and we've got these cleaning products with all these
- 4:38different chemicals and fragrance in it too, and our
- 4:40personal care product. The list goes on.
- 4:43But that can be overwhelming in scale.
- 4:44Yeah, so, well, let's unpack each one of those.
- 4:46So let's do the dust for a moment.
- 4:48Just generally big picture dust. Do you?
- 4:50Are you talking about dust that comes into the home though from
- 4:52outside the home? Like on your shoes?
- 4:53Just dust. Yeah, it just comes in from
- 4:56outside or it settles because, you know, you're the fibers in
- 4:59your furniture kind of, you know, go off into the air and
- 5:02land somewhere else. So I want to get to furniture
- 5:04but shoes. I am curious, do you recommend
- 5:06no shoes in the house? No shoes in the house.
- 5:08Yeah. So when you are walking around
- 5:10outside, your shoes are getting into all kinds of stuff, right?
- 5:13There was a study that a microbiologist studied and found
- 5:17that shoes contain more fecal matter than toilet seats, public
- 5:20toilet seats. So you're getting fecal matter
- 5:23into your home and it's not just staying on your floor and it's
- 5:26not just fecal matter, it's pesticides and all kinds of
- 5:28things that are out in our environment.
- 5:30Once it's on the floor, it still can get up into your air because
- 5:33when we're walking and moving about in our house, things are
- 5:35lifted up and they move around our air and we're breathing that
- 5:37stuff too. So especially if you have little
- 5:39babies crawling around, no shoes in the house.
- 5:41But if in any circumstance, I think it's better to, if you
- 5:45want to have shoes, have indoor shoes.
- 5:47I think some people listening might be thinking, OK, well,
- 5:50yeah, that sounds disgusting that there's more poop on my
- 5:53shoes than on a toilet seat on the average shoot, according to
- 5:56the study that you referenced. So doesn't feel good.
- 5:59Don't like that. That being said, you know, I let
- 6:02my baby crawl in the dirt like we let our kids run around
- 6:05sometimes bare feet like germs. I mean, we don't want poop, but
- 6:09germs, generally speaking, should not be seen as always the
- 6:12enemy. We want kids to have a healthy
- 6:14immune system and we don't want to just inoculate them from
- 6:16every, you know, you know, feared pathogen or whatever it
- 6:22is. So how do you balance that where
- 6:24you don't want to be like a germaphobe but but then you also
- 6:26want to be common, sensible and not have poop on your floors?
- 6:29Yeah. It kind of goes back to an
- 6:31earlier question, because one of the things that I think, and I
- 6:33forget that this happens in so many homes, one of the things I
- 6:36think is really detrimental to our health that's in our homes,
- 6:40in a lot of homes, is sanitize, sanitizing solutions or anything
- 6:44that kind of disinfects like Clorox.
- 6:46Like Clorox, Yeah, not only because, you know, bleach is a
- 6:50Asmogen, it can lead to respiratory health issues, but
- 6:54also when we're killing all of the bacteria.
- 6:56So I think about it like this, when something says it kills
- 6:5899.9% of bacteria, there's .1% that survive, right?
- 7:03So they're the most resilient or resistant to this disinfectant.
- 7:07They're the strongest. And then who's left to multiply
- 7:10the strongest? So you're going to end up with
- 7:12more of these antibiotic or disinfectant resistant bacteria
- 7:16to populate. And this is where we get into
- 7:18this super bug realm. I don't know if you've heard
- 7:21that term before, but it's where there are these more resilient
- 7:24and resistant bacteria and then we're out of balance.
- 7:28And that's how we end up getting sick.
- 7:29Actually, when I had my health crisis, it had to do with these
- 7:31super bugs. So I'm kind of a little more
- 7:33alert to this issue. But our homes and our bodies
- 7:37have something called a microbiome, and it's important
- 7:40to keep that in balance. We have a lot of bacteria, even
- 7:43fungus and viruses that are good for our health and for our our
- 7:48ecosystems that we live in and the ecosystem that's on our
- 7:51body. So when we go wiping out all of
- 7:53the bacteria, we're killing good guys too.
- 7:55They're there to keep us in balance and protect our health.
- 7:58So let's unpack that a little more.
- 8:00Do you recommend no Clorox or bleach to be used in the home?
- 8:04I don't use them. I Bleach was a hard one for me
- 8:07to give up because I thought I had to keep it at least to keep
- 8:09my clothes white and for the occasional illness in the house.
- 8:12But I have learned that I don't need it for either of those
- 8:16things. But yeah, I don't think that
- 8:18it's it's worth the risk that it brings into the home.
- 8:20There are a lot of other great alternatives that are a little
- 8:23less toxic. OK, so if your kid vomits on the
- 8:25floor, let's just like give some real world examples here.
- 8:28This might this happened in my home a couple weeks ago.
- 8:31There's vomit on your floor. You're no Clorox wipe, no Clorox
- 8:35spray. I mean, obviously we we would
- 8:36wash it up and stuff, but you're just saying what should I do?
- 8:40What should I do? What I.
- 8:41Would do as I would definitely obviously clean it really well.
- 8:44Like hot soapy water is my best friend or cleaning product and
- 8:50unfragranced. Yeah, get it cleaned up as good
- 8:52as I can. And if I felt like I wanted to
- 8:54also like disinfect the area, which I sometimes do.
- 8:56One of my favorite things to do is pop a spray top on top of a
- 9:00bottle of peroxide and then spritz it down and let it sit
- 9:03there for 10 minutes and it's going to disinfect a lot of the
- 9:06nonsense on there. You can also do it with rubbing
- 9:08alcohol, but I don't prefer the smell of that.
- 9:10OK, that's great. That's very practical.
- 9:13So no shoes. We talked about what happens.
- 9:15There's not. But on the floor.
- 9:17Let's go to furniture next. You mentioned that a lot of
- 9:21furniture is toxic. Yeah.
- 9:22Tell me more about that. So these are big ticket items.
- 9:25I don't live in a perfectly non-toxic house or world.
- 9:28I probably never will this side of heaven, right?
- 9:30But so a lot of furniture has been treat.
- 9:33Most furniture has been treated with flame retardants, which
- 9:37have been linked to a lot of cancers and other health issues
- 9:40and it's hard to avoid and especially it is really
- 9:44expensive to find things without it.
- 9:46So it's a, it's a really hard 1 to tackle, but there are things
- 9:48you can do. So when we do bring new big
- 9:51items into the home when possible, I leave them outside
- 9:54in the sun for, you know, overnight, not overnight, but
- 9:57for a few hours during the day, getting the sun on them, let
- 9:59them off gas so that we get some of those chemicals out into the
- 10:02air outside instead of putting it into my tightly packed little
- 10:05box inside, things like that. But then making you know, when
- 10:09they're when it when it's practical and I'm able to, then
- 10:12I'll buy the less toxic option. But also use things like, you
- 10:15know, if you don't have a perfect mattress, you can have a
- 10:19mattress pad that's a little less toxic.
- 10:21And you can also have your sheets and your pillowcases or
- 10:23even just your pillows be something with healthier
- 10:27materials. How do you determine when you're
- 10:29trying to purchase furniture as an example or like a rug online,
- 10:32Right? There's always like super cheap
- 10:34kind of plastic rugs as an example.
- 10:36In fact, I think the one in the studio is a super cheap plastic
- 10:39rug. Quite possibly.
- 10:40How do you determine whether something is toxic or not and
- 10:44what should you look? For sure, yeah.
- 10:46With rugs, I like to look for natural fiber, so it'd be
- 10:48something like wool or cotton or jute.
- 10:51And those are really good options compared to the
- 10:54polyester plastic ones, right? You're going to be getting all
- 10:56of those plastic chemicals into your, especially on a rug or
- 10:59something where you're walking on it a lot and it's kicking
- 11:01things up into the air. So looking for natural fibers.
- 11:04And I also like rugs that don't have a backing on them because
- 11:07the backing has been put on with really strong adhesives or
- 11:10glues, and those can be a little more.
- 11:12Toxic too. What are the risks of those
- 11:15possible plastics and your rug to the human body?
- 11:19All kinds of things that, you know, I think we don't have
- 11:21enough research that I've seen any ways to give really specific
- 11:25this plastic causes this damage. But I think we're finding out
- 11:30more along the way that all of these little interruptions in
- 11:33our bodies are leading to all kinds of things.
- 11:34And we all can't always directly link it back to the source
- 11:38either. So it's hard to know, but it
- 11:40little interruptions can lead to bigger problems over time.
- 11:44So back to the idea of the house being in the box and protecting
- 11:46the air quality in your house. So we talked about shoes,
- 11:48there's furniture, obviously your rugs, there's cleaning
- 11:51chemicals and not using or, or avoiding certain cleaning
- 11:54chemicals and favoring others that are more natural that don't
- 11:57have fragrances in them. Like you used, talked about
- 12:00peroxide as opposed to using Clorox, which sounds kind of
- 12:03good to me. I don't know.
- 12:04I don't know, like something, you know, big problem with that.
- 12:07Another toxin in the home that I've heard of a possible toxin
- 12:10is gas burning stoves. Yeah.
- 12:13Yeah. What is your take on that?
- 12:15Give, you know, it's kind of 6 of this half dozen the other
- 12:17because electric stoves give off EMF.
- 12:20So it's kind of like a pick your poison situation.
- 12:23If you use gas stoves, which I do, I prefer fire.
- 12:26You want to have some ventilation.
- 12:27So use your fan when you're cooking or and or have some kind
- 12:30of air filters in the home. One of the best things that you
- 12:34can do for your own. We talked about not wearing
- 12:35shoes in the house, right? Also removing the dust.
- 12:38The other biggest thing I recommend is to open up your
- 12:40doors, windows for at least 10 minutes at least once a day as
- 12:43we talk about them being like little air trap cubes, right?
- 12:46You want to have some ventilations who air out what's
- 12:48inside and it's gonna make a big difference in your home and
- 12:51especially if you have something like a gas burning stove.
- 12:53What about induction stoves? I think those are higher in EMF,
- 12:57but I'm not sure on that. Okay, interesting.
- 12:59Yeah, my husband and I've been talking about this like we have
- 13:01a gas range. And so there's a conversation of
- 13:04will is that, you know, there's gas obviously filling your home
- 13:06and we turn it on. Yeah, you can open a window, you
- 13:08can turn on the the fan, but there's still a lot of gas.
- 13:11And there's all these studies that show that that gas,
- 13:13especially to little kids, is extremely toxic and linked to
- 13:18cancers and all of these terrible things.
- 13:20So. But yeah, opening the window is
- 13:23kind of a bare minimum it sounds like.
- 13:24Yes, yeah, everyone should be doing that either way.
- 13:27What is 1 belief in the clean living space that you actually
- 13:30disagree with? One is that it's all or nothing.
- 13:34You know, I see a lot of extremism where to me it seems
- 13:38like people start to kind of idolize health or non-toxic
- 13:42living. I see a lot of fear.
- 13:45I see a lot of kind of legalistic thinking in that way.
- 13:50And I think that that can be as toxic or more toxic than the
- 13:54things that they're trying to avoid.
- 13:56So I think that all or nothing approach.
- 13:59Yeah, what is the point where clean living can go too far?
- 14:04I don't know where the point is. Yeah, I think yeah, when it not.
- 14:08In these books. I even wrote that in the intro
- 14:11of one. Like if this starts feeling
- 14:12overwhelming, put it down because it really should not be
- 14:15that way. You know, we this it's about
- 14:18stewardship. It's about caring for the vessel
- 14:20that God gave me. God gave me this body to do his
- 14:23important works that he's called me to do.
- 14:25And I was limiting myself from doing those things without
- 14:28realizing it. Like in my ignorance, I was
- 14:30limiting my ability to do what he just called me to do.
- 14:34Now that I know differently I could the point I think what you
- 14:38asked, where is the point where it goes too far right.
- 14:40So the point is, when I start making an idol out of the
- 14:43health, out of the non-toxic, living out of my body, where I
- 14:48want to be is in a place of stewardship where I'm caring for
- 14:52this vessel because he trusted me to care for it and because it
- 14:56enables me to do what he's called me to do.
- 14:58I love that. That's a great way to ground and
- 15:01anchor anchor it. Whether you like it or not, your

- 16:40If someone's listening and says I wanted to detoxify my entire
- 16:42house, but they don't want to make an idol of it, right?
- 16:45But they want to start taking the steps to be good stewards of
- 16:48their home and their their family.
- 16:50What's the order of operations that you would recommend for
- 16:53them? Where should they start?
- 16:54OK, I created when I wrote my first book, so my handle online
- 16:58is a little less toxic, so it's ALLT.
- 17:01So when I wrote my first book, I came up with this kind of format
- 17:04to help everyone do this. Where do I start?
- 17:06How do I keep going? Because what you don't want to
- 17:08do is start and then not keep going.
- 17:11So you don't want to do it in a way that's overwhelming.
- 17:13You don't want to overwhelm your finances, your marriage, your
- 17:16mental health, your capacity capacity in any way, right?
- 17:19So I, I came up with this kind of acronym.
- 17:21So ALLT for a little less toxic and the A stands for assess or
- 17:27it could also be for awareness. But this is where I'm looking at
- 17:29what I have in my home that I'm using or not using that's just
- 17:33already here. And I'm going to start to pay
- 17:35attention to what's actually inside of it.
- 17:37So this is I got to start turning things around and
- 17:39looking at the backs of packages and see what's in the
- 17:41ingredients. When I, I was growing up and
- 17:44before I knew any of this, I never turned a package around
- 17:47unless I was looking for a calorie count, right?
- 17:49I was looking at the front of the package an I was falling for
- 17:52marketing claims. This is all natural or, you
- 17:56know, it's low calorie, low fat, whatever it might be.
- 17:59That's all I cared about it. This looks good.
- 18:01I think it tastes good or I like how it makes my hair feel,
- 18:04whatever it might be and the little clip paraben free,
- 18:07whatever it might be, turn it around.
- 18:08Actually pay attention what's inside, whether it's something
- 18:11you're buying or it's something you already have.
- 18:12But doing this a is for assess. So you're looking at what you've
- 18:15got going on in your home already.
- 18:17Once you've done that, you've got some awareness.
- 18:19You kind of see what you you have and now you're going to go
- 18:22to the first L, which is for let go and you can just eliminate
- 18:26some things right away. Having less of this stuff in
- 18:28your house is going to improve your indoor air quality.
- 18:30It's going to remove dust collectors and it's going to
- 18:33enable you to remove dust a little more efficiently.
- 18:36So all of that's going to immediately make your home
- 18:38healthier. And that's like the Clorox and
- 18:40the poopy shoes. Yeah, the poopy shoes, anything,
- 18:44You know, we all have stuff. I even still do where there's
- 18:46things in the cabinet that have been there.
- 18:48Maybe I'm even packed them up and moved with them.
- 18:50They're just still sitting in a cabinet and they don't need to
- 18:53be there. So it's just taking up space.
- 18:54And a lot of times they have ingredients in them that I
- 18:56really don't need to have and my.
- 18:57Husband loves Lorox so I'm going to go home and be like it's bye
- 19:01bye. Students buy you peroxide for
- 19:03your birthday. With the spray with the.
- 19:07Spray top, of course. Very nice spray top.
- 19:08OK. I'm so sorry, I know the
- 19:11husbands. I'm so sorry, husband, you know,
- 19:12but I guys can't be money in some ways.
- 19:15That's too funny. So let go.
- 19:18So yeah, let go. And then instantly everything's
- 19:21already going to be healthier. And then the next L is for level
- 19:24up. This is where you're making
- 19:25those swaps along the way, right?
- 19:27So your shampoo is running low. Do not wait until it's
- 19:30completely gone, because this is what most people do when it's
- 19:33empty. You have no time to do any
- 19:35research. You're either going to get the
- 19:36thing you always get, or you're going to fall for clever
- 19:39marketing because you're trying to get something that's a little
- 19:41less toxic, or you're going to get something that's on sale.
- 19:44There's really no other option. If you, if you save yourself a
- 19:47little bit of time, like a grace window, now you can look for
- 19:51something that has ingredients that are a little better.
- 19:53Maybe you just get something without any fragrance, right?
- 19:56You might need to order it online too.
- 19:57Not all of these things are available in person.
- 20:00So you give yourself that little bit of window and you get
- 20:02something that does not have to be perfect.
- 20:05It still needs to fit in your budget.
- 20:06It needs to fit your needs and your preferences.
- 20:09And you can do that and make it a little less toxic than the one
- 20:12that you had before. And then you just keep doing
- 20:15that. And the T stands for time
- 20:18because you're going to continue doing this for always and
- 20:20forever. We are never going to live in a
- 20:22perfectly non-toxic body, home or world this side of heaven, so
- 20:27we just keep doing these things as an act of stewardship and
- 20:30it's like a sanctification process for your home and body
- 20:32over time. That's so great and it sounds so
- 20:35doable. Is there a place like I think
- 20:37about Target or the grocery store or Amazon?
- 20:40I've noticed when I've gone to these stores and I actually use
- 20:43this little app, this is not sponsored by the show.
- 20:45I'm curious, you're taking it's called Yuka and do you like
- 20:48Yuka? I don't love it.
- 20:49OK, tell me why but. I think it can be a helpful.
- 20:51Tool because it does it like mislabel you think?
- 20:54Sometimes. Sometimes it gives a harsher
- 20:56rating than it should her a better rating than it should.
- 20:58That's my gut actually, because I'm like, why does this one get
- 21:01such a harsh rating and this one doesn't?
- 21:02Because the ingredients seem pretty similar or whatever it
- 21:05is. So that's really interesting.
- 21:06Do you have, by the way, an app you recommend I.
- 21:08Don't so you. Get sponsored by an app or.
- 21:11There's one that I do like and I will tell you, but I'm going to
- 21:13tell you that I don't. I like apps and I do use them
- 21:16myself sometimes because I think it can be a helpful tool, but
- 21:19it's not the gospel, you know, You can't just fully put your
- 21:22trust into an app. You need to use your own wisdom
- 21:25and discernment and your eyeballs and your brain and
- 21:27actually look at what ingredients are in things so you
- 21:29can start to understand what's in these things and make your
- 21:31own decisions. Because these apps, sometimes
- 21:33they get bought out or they get influenced different ways over
- 21:36time. So they can be helpful.
- 21:37I'm not saying don't use an app, one that I like currently called
- 21:40Switch Natural and all it does, you can scan any product and it
- 21:45tells you based on the, you look at the ingredients, you scan the
- 21:48ingredients and then it tells you this ingredient is linked to
- 21:51these problems. And and then you can make an
- 21:54informed decision there because you say, OK, well maybe I can
- 21:56find one without those ingredients or I don't really
- 21:58care about that. So you at least know what you're
- 22:00getting. And that works for not just like
- 22:03household products. Does it work for foods too?
- 22:06I don't think that one does food.
- 22:07OK, Yeah, that's more people. Like the olive one?
- 22:10I haven't tried that one for food, but that one seems good
- 22:12too. There are a lot of packaged food
- 22:15that that contain additives or ingredients that are actually
- 22:18banned in other countries. Should families be avoiding
- 22:21these? Absolutely.
- 22:22Why not? You know, there's no reason for
- 22:24it. I think when we talked about the
- 22:26convenient stuff, we've all been sold a lie that everything needs
- 22:29to be super palatable and super easy and that a snack is this
- 22:34packaged bright thing that your kids are happy.
- 22:36It's not a toy, you know, so I think we easily can be avoiding
- 22:40these things and there's no reason not to.
- 22:42What are some examples of the top products that you would say
- 22:46this is the avoid list, but they're often typically in the
- 22:50average American household in terms of food?
- 22:53I know that there's been a lot more talk about this, which I'm
- 22:55happy about and we're seeing a change in this direction, but
- 22:58it's the food dyes. I think that one's so easy to
- 23:00just avoid things that have any, anything artificial.
- 23:03So I go any artificial flavoring, artificial coloring,
- 23:07anything that's artificial about it, just avoid that all
- 23:09together. And you're already going to,
- 23:11again, you're kind of creating a funnel for yourself so that it's
- 23:13going to narrow down your choices to something that is a
- 23:16little healthier for you. So that probably would say no to
- 23:19most of your average or more traditional American cereals as
- 23:23an example. Yep.
- 23:24Yeah. And a lot of the different snack
- 23:26and packaged foods, too, which I forget that so many people eat
- 23:29them in my own little bubble at home with my kids, you know?
- 23:31And then I go out to like, we went to an amusement park last
- 23:34week and I just was flabbergasted that people were
- 23:37just pumping their kids full of this stuff.
- 23:39What do you mean? What are some examples?
- 23:41Like, well, you go to like the my nieces and nephews sports
- 23:44games and everybody's got their colored Gatorade.
- 23:46And then they get there, everyone gets a snack bag at the
- 23:48end. And there's all these little
- 23:50like, it's cookie, it's candy. It's like cookies and sugary
- 23:53desserts and the colored Gatorade and all the things.
- 23:56And yeah, I don't know how we're considering that a snack or a
- 23:59health healthy treat. Yeah.
- 24:01What do you think about Lunchables?
- 24:02Oh, yeah, those are junk too. Yeah.
- 24:04And they don't need to. I don't know.
- 24:06So when I first started on this journey to.
- 24:09And so we were newly married. It's 2013.
- 24:12We'd been married just a little over a year.
- 24:14I had a health crisis. I'm waking up.
- 24:16What am I doing to my body? And then start changing things a
- 24:19little bit, have complete revolution like of my health.
- 24:22And so I just started making stuff at home more.
- 24:24So I started, I told my husband I was packing him a lunchable
- 24:27for lunch. And it was just, I put crackers
- 24:29and I got a little circular like cookie cutter and I cut the
- 24:33Turkey, cut the cheese, I just made them a lunchable, the grown
- 24:36up lunchable. We can be doing these things
- 24:38ourselves and instead of outsourcing, paying a company to
- 24:41do it for us and to give us crummy products in return.
- 24:45What would you say is one of the biggest false advertisements
- 24:49when it comes to products trying to look healthy, but they're
- 24:53actually not healthy? Yeah, it's, it's in the
- 24:55marketing. So it'll say all natural or, you
- 24:57know, sometimes it'll say like uses real lemons, but you turn
- 25:01the package around. Even though they use real
- 25:02lemons, they use a lot of other synthetic things too.
- 25:05So it's it's the marketing always the front of packages is
- 25:09just a marketing team trying to convince you to buy a product.
- 25:12It has very little to do with what's actually inside.
- 25:15But if it says like no parabens, no phthalates, things like this
- 25:19and you know, it's, it's talking about specific ingredients that
- 25:21you can trust are not in there. So that kind of marketing is
- 25:24informative. It's just like natural.
- 25:26Well, they can be informative, but also not telling the whole
- 25:29story either. So even though there may be no
- 25:31parabens, you might turn around, it still has synthetic
- 25:33fragrance, which can have dozens to hundreds of different
- 25:36chemicals that do not have to be disclosed to you because they're
- 25:38proprietary. Yeah.
- 25:40And they're they're not all just there for scent.
- 25:42So they might be there to preserve or to extend the life
- 25:47of the scent or make it stick to fibers better and things like
- 25:49that. So yeah, very sneaky.
- 25:52Very sneaky. What's the biggest mistake you
- 25:54see moms making in the kitchen while trying to be more healthy?
- 25:57So you may be trying to do it perfectly, maybe trying to yeah,
- 26:03I don't know, falling for the the traps of marketing and or
- 26:10trying to do things perfectly. Meaning if the front of the
- 26:13package says like natural, unhealthy or whatever, like just
- 26:16your in your view, just ignore that.
- 26:18Pretend it didn't say that. Just look at the ingredients.
- 26:20That's all you should care about.
- 26:21That's it. Turn that package around and
- 26:23look at what's inside. Yeah.
- 26:24Other times we're paying a higher price tag for the
- 26:26marketing, but not actually getting what we think we're
- 26:28paying for. How do you make life healthier
- 26:32for your family without making it too hard for them?
- 26:35I think it becomes just a part of your natural rhythm.
- 26:37I my experience with this is I learned this stuff before I
- 26:41brought kids into the equation. So my journey is probably going
- 26:44to look a little differently for somebody who already has kids
- 26:46and is trying to change things. But kids will get on board.
- 26:50They, you know, I told you I used to teach in a in a
- 26:52classroom and I had 4th grade students and they would bring in
- 26:56all kinds of nonsense, you know, like these talkies and a giant
- 26:59bottle of soda or whatever for breakfast.
- 27:01And so I wanted them to understand what they were
- 27:05inviting into their bodies too. So I just had them bring in
- 27:08stuff. Hey, let's look at what's inside
- 27:09stuff. And I put the docu Cam on and we
- 27:12just looked at ingredients and we talked about it like, what do
- 27:14you think this word is? And we all try to pronounce it
- 27:17and like, I don't know, like, do you, if I like put that on a
- 27:19plate, would you eat it? No.
- 27:21Well, you are though, you know, it's just having some awareness
- 27:25about it too. So I, I think that if we educate
- 27:28our kids on these things that they will get more on board.
- 27:30And also if we make it fun, we invite them into the process and
- 27:33we make food delicious. I make really fun food.
- 27:37We have, you know, like the game.
- 27:39What are they? Like the baseball field, Taco
- 27:41boats? I make them at home but with
- 27:43better ingredients, you know? What are the top three biggest
- 27:47kitchen swaps that somebody could make that it might be some
- 27:49of the easiest in terms of your food and food prep?
- 27:53Home making dressing is huge store bought dressing,
- 27:57especially if you want one that has healthier ingredients.
- 27:58They're really expensive and it could be like, I don't know, $9
- 28:02or more for a bottle of dressing where you could make that at
- 28:05home for literal pennies. I think that's I don't to me,
- 28:08that's the biggest one I see a lot of people wasting money on.
- 28:11And you can make it way better at home for nothing.
- 28:14So get good at that. Another thing that I like to do
- 28:16to make it easier at home is make meals that feed us more
- 28:19than once. So I love things like a soup, a
- 28:21Stew or a casserole that I can make a big old batch of.
- 28:25You can even freeze part of it so that I cook once and we eat
- 28:28twice or more. That's made things a lot easier
- 28:31for me. And when my kids were really
- 28:32small, I did a lot of the prep during nap or at after bedtime
- 28:37where I would do whatever chopping or something like that
- 28:39and save myself the trouble for when it was, you know, like
- 28:43crazy time always during when you're trying to put dinner on
- 28:45the table. One of my approaches is to focus
- 28:49on protein and fiber and fresh or colorful.
- 28:53I kind of lumped those two together so to make the meal
- 28:56really easy to not overthink it. So we have a good healthy
- 28:59protein, we have plenty of fiber and my plate looks colorful and
- 29:02it's a lot of fresh things so that I don't overthink it.
- 29:06Love that. What about microwaves?
- 29:09I don't know if there's really conclusive research about it.
- 29:12I haven't seen. I know they emit emfi know they
- 29:14have radiation, but I don't know how problematic it is for our
- 29:17health. But I also know that we have
- 29:19lived all of humanity without microwaves until that time
- 29:22where, like, it was like feminism TV dinner, you know?
- 29:25So when ours broke, I was getting ready for my little
- 29:28girl's birthday party, like her first or second birthday
- 29:30somewhere along there, and I was warming up a bajillion sausages.
- 29:35We're doing breakfast for dinner.
- 29:36And it broke. And so I thought, OK, let me see
- 29:39how long I can live without this thing.
- 29:41Maybe I can live without it. And the first couple of days I
- 29:43had, you know, my muscle memory of just wanting to pop something
- 29:46in the microwave. First couple of days there was
- 29:48that. And after that it was not a
- 29:50thing at all. It's completely easy to live
- 29:53without 1. So my take on it is if I don't
- 29:55need it and it can be harmful then just forget about it.
- 29:59My husband sent me this study this morning about the lining in
- 30:04your sparkling water cans. We have been a big sparkling
- 30:08water can household. I think no more after this
- 30:12article that we were exchanging with each other, but it
- 30:15basically said that the lining in your water cans can lead to.
- 30:20Let me just pull this up exactly.
- 30:22It says some studies have found that PFAS and popular sparkling
- 30:26water brands. The levels often fall below the
- 30:30current federal advisory limits. That said, even low levels do
- 30:33not necessarily guarantee the drinks are safe.
- 30:35The science is evolving, and some health organizations argue
- 30:38that even very low levels of exposure put people at at risk.
- 30:42It's said that PFAS can act as endocrine disruptors, promote
- 30:45oxidative stress and other altered gene expression, or
- 30:48interfere with DNA repair. And that could contribute to
- 30:52basically cancer and collectoral cancer has specifically been
- 30:56tied or or linked with sparkling water cans.
- 31:00Yeah, and a lot of people don't realize that not only sparkling
- 31:03water cans, but virtually all cans have a plastic lining in
- 31:07them. You can find videos where people
- 31:09use different chemicals to break down the outer tin or aluminum
- 31:12or whatever it is, and then what's left behind is this
- 31:15really thin plastic. One of the things that I, when I
- 31:19realized this, I started making beans at home because I realized
- 31:22that they, when you buy canned beans, I know this is not what
- 31:25you asked, but when you buy canned beans, they put the beans
- 31:29in the can that you buy them in, seal it, and then they're
- 31:32pressure cooked inside that can. It's already lined with plastic,
- 31:36so it goes through a really high heat cooking process.
- 31:39Beans are cooked in the can. Cooked in the can, yeah.
- 31:42So some things are going to have even more of those plastic
- 31:46materials. Boiled in plastic.
- 31:48Boiled in plastic, Yeah. And then with the sparkling
- 31:50water, you think, well, those aren't boiled, right?
- 31:52But often times when you buy something, it didn't just
- 31:55magically get from the factory to your house.
- 31:59It was sat in warehouses and big shipping trucks and containers
- 32:03that sat in the hot sun. So they have been affected by
- 32:06heat too, which is going to degrade that material and allow
- 32:08it to leach into your product more too.
- 32:11I don't completely avoid, I like a sparkling, you know, an
- 32:14lollipop or something too. But when you can get something
- 32:18in glass is going to make it a little less toxic.
- 32:21What about glass is the next question.
- 32:24So, you know, my husband and I are talking about let's move
- 32:25over to Pellegrinos. Yeah.
- 32:28Are they Pellegrinos? There's Pellegrino.
- 32:30No Perrier. Perrier yeah, No, Pellegrino is
- 32:32the one we're going to move to, OK.
- 32:33We're not moving to Pellegrinos because they're coming to the
- 32:35glass bottle are glass. Are there any issues with glass
- 32:36bottles? Well, there can be.
- 32:38I saw some studies coming out about the lids that are on these
- 32:41bottles. It feels like impossible to
- 32:43avoid all the toxins, right? But still, when you make the
- 32:46choice to get glass instead of the plastic lined cans, it's
- 32:50hopefully going to be a less toxic option for you.
- 32:52But sometimes because these, the lids that they put on the
- 32:54bottles have plastic in them too.
- 32:56And then over time, while they're, you know, like I said,
- 32:58they're in the shipping containers and trucks and
- 33:00everything, the heat and the water moving, you know, so it
- 33:03can get a little, you can still end up with the, the PFAS.
- 33:05They're called forever chemicals because they, they take so long
- 33:10to break down, not just in your body, but in the environment
- 33:13that they are almost everlasting.
- 33:15So they can be cumulative and add and add and add without ever
- 33:20without ever being processed out of the system.

- 35:02If a busy mom listening thinks I do not have the time to make all
- 35:06of these changes or to make changes generally, what would
- 35:10you gently push back on? I think.
- 35:13We're going to be buying things anyway, as especially as moms,
- 35:17we're usually the ones making a lot of these small financial
- 35:20decisions every day about like the groceries or the clothing or
- 35:24the bedding or the personal care and cleaning products, right?
- 35:27So you're going to be making these choices anyway.
- 35:30You can take a little bit of time to read what's in these
- 35:34things and do not do it all at once.
- 35:36Don't do it in a way. Like I said, you do not want to
- 35:38overwhelm yourself, your marriage, your finances, any of
- 35:41it. But you can take a little bit of
- 35:43time because it matters, because you're not just called to care
- 35:47for your kids hearts and minds, you're called to care for their
- 35:50bodies too, and your own too. I can't even care for my kids
- 35:53the way that I need to when I'm feeling crummy or I'm riddled
- 35:56with migraines or joint pain or brain fog and fatigue, right?
- 35:59So these little things, they do matter.
- 36:01They do add up and it's worth it.
- 36:04What is your honest take on eating out?
- 36:06Do you recommend against it or just changing how you eat out?
- 36:10I like eating. I used to like it a lot more.
- 36:13I used to like it a lot more until I realized how crummy I
- 36:17was feeling after eating some of these things.
- 36:19When I started making food at home myself, it tastes better,
- 36:22it cost me less and I feel better afterwards.
- 36:24So there's not a lot of motivation for me to eat out
- 36:28anymore. But it is still really fun and
- 36:30it's nice to have somebody else cook for you so you can make
- 36:33choices. Even when I, I did an
- 36:34elimination diet, that kind of kick started all of this for me.
- 36:37And even during that we, we ate out sometimes and I had, I had
- 36:40to be really mindful about what I ordered, you know, so I didn't
- 36:43get exposed to the things that I was trying to remove so that I
- 36:46could test. So you, you can do it.
- 36:48You know, there's, there are a lot more options in restaurants
- 36:51now than there used to be. And more are coming because
- 36:53people are caring more about this.
- 36:54We're kind of changing the way this all is.
- 36:57But even if, you know, we sometimes go to in and out, I
- 37:00know like we go to in and out and I'll get myself like a
- 37:05protein style. I get double meat protein style,
- 37:07no spread. Mustard instead is my order.
- 37:09And I like grilled and raw onions.
- 37:11So yeah, you can even make in and out a little less toxic.
- 37:13It doesn't have to be perfect. You don't.
- 37:15Have to be a little less toxic because it doesn't have the bun
- 37:18and because it doesn't have the IT just has mustard it.
- 37:21Does fake cheese and no spread The spread has a lot of stuff in
- 37:24it. Stuff, yeah, like, you know, the
- 37:26seed oils and like polysorbate 80 preservatives and the I, I
- 37:30recently shared about it and I got a lot of like no cheese.
- 37:33It's not even real cheese. It's it's got a lot of weird
- 37:36stuff. American cheese isn't real
- 37:37cheese. It's I think they call it like a
- 37:40cheese product or something like that.
- 37:42Wow, I don't like the branding is so sad.
- 37:45I I mean I like a good Parmesan. You know, that's like a real
- 37:47cheese mozzarella. You can do like even a cheddar
- 37:50that's like a good cheddar. But if it's not, you know if
- 37:53they call it American and all of a sudden it's like the worst
- 37:54cheese ever. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:56But you know what? I didn't know that I didn't feel
- 37:59good. I used to eat out and I thought
- 38:01I felt fine. It wasn't until I removed these
- 38:03things from my life that I actually saw with a difference
- 38:06it can make. Same with the fragrance and
- 38:07things like that. Once they're actually out of
- 38:10your life, you have to give your body time to recalibrate.
- 38:12Once it's out and your body's more balanced now, you can
- 38:16notice the reaction that you had dulled yourself to.
- 38:18So now I'll go. If we go eat out and I feel
- 38:20junky afterward, I'm less likely to want to do that again.
- 38:23Or if I buy a product that has a bunch of fragrance in it or
- 38:26something because I like the way it smelled and it gives me a
- 38:28headache. I don't really want to keep
- 38:30doing that to myself. I want to explore food a little
- 38:33bit more. So let's say you're a you're a
- 38:34mom in the grocery store. You're about to do your average
- 38:36run. What are the things that you
- 38:38would avoid? You've mentioned a couple things
- 38:40like, you know, salad dressings or food dyes.
- 38:43What are some other things that you would avoid in that grocery
- 38:45store and other things that you would say these are options to
- 38:49opt for instead for a healthier home.
- 38:52So I think we my focus is on instead of what I'm avoiding,
- 38:57it's what I'm looking for. So we'll fill our fridge and our
- 39:00pantry and our home with mostly just whole food items and less
- 39:04packaged items. But there's a time and a place
- 39:06for a packaged snack, right? I think I have a bar in my bag
- 39:09right now, but there are less toxic options for that too.
- 39:12But so I try and focus on Whole Foods 1st and then when there's
- 39:15an occasion where you might need to package something or other,
- 39:18find the thing that has ingredients in it that are
- 39:21ingredients I would use in my own home.
- 39:23So when you say Whole Foods, are you talking about just fruits
- 39:25and veggies? I mean, what is what is a whole
- 39:28food that's not a fruit or a veggie or like a bean or a nut,
- 39:30I guess. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:31So like seeds, grains, nuts, meat, dairy products, anything
- 39:35that's more in its whole natural form.
- 39:37What about the frozen section? What are things to avoid in the
- 39:40frozen section and what are some options that you would say are
- 39:42healthier in the frozen section? I.
- 39:44Love the frozen Section 4 especially like fruits and
- 39:47vegetables. It's a great budget hack.
- 39:50Like berries are very expensive and especially now I they're
- 39:53crazy. I buy frozen berries all the
- 39:56time and it makes it. We use it to make different,
- 39:58like jam or compote or throw it in a smoothie and it's a great
- 40:02budget hack especially. If you buy like in you know, at
- 40:05Costco or something like that. So but in the freezer section, I
- 40:08would avoid the things that are more processed.
- 40:10So a lot of them have just oils that I would never use at home
- 40:13and different stabilizers and preservatives that I would never
- 40:17use at home and are just not necessary, especially if you can
- 40:19make it yourself for pretty easily.
- 40:21I noticed with a lot of the like flash frozen veggies, whether
- 40:24it's like broccoli or other veggies, sometimes they're like
- 40:27OK, steam it in the bag in the microwave.
- 40:30No, do not do that. Do not do that.
- 40:34I. Buy those too.
- 40:34I get the. Big bag of broccoli, steam meat
- 40:37and. You're like, every time I'm
- 40:39like, how dare you? No.
- 40:40Yeah. Cut the bag open and throw it in
- 40:42a pan with some butter or oil. Or you can steam it.
- 40:45You just you. There's a steamer basket.
- 40:47It's this thing. It's called the steamer basket
- 40:49and you put it in the bottle. You're made of plastic.
- 40:51No, I have a stainless steel 1 and you put it in the bottom of
- 40:54your pan, you add a little bit of water and you put your
- 40:56broccoli or whatever it is in there and you pop the lid on and
- 40:59call it a day. You do not need that microwave
- 41:01and you don't need that plastic bag.
- 41:02What about chicken Nuggets? We haven't done those.
- 41:06I don't know. I will shout out good ranchers
- 41:09here because they have the seed oil free chicken Nuggets which
- 41:12actually tastes really great. Haven't tried them, you should.
- 41:14Try and let me know you think, but that's what we got in our
- 41:17little good good ranchers box. And then I've like looked at the
- 41:20other ones in the store and we've tried other ones of
- 41:22course, right. I am curious about how to
- 41:25discern because Yuca app tells me as an example, like it has
- 41:28told me I'm in Costco, right? And it will look at like the,
- 41:31you know, natural, you know, chicken made from chicken
- 41:34breast, whatever they look, it looks kind of better from like
- 41:37Costco. And then there's the Dino bites.
- 41:39Yes. And Yuka app told me Dino Bites
- 41:42was healthier than the like Costco Kirkland signature made
- 41:46from chicken breast whatever. And I was like, how can this be?
- 41:50I don't know. We're gonna have to explore
- 41:51this. Question, right?
- 41:52Yeah, I know. I'm gonna have to ask you about
- 41:53that. Actually, I can maybe pull it
- 41:54up. I'm gonna pull it up right now.
- 41:55Let's do this, okay? I wonder what they're basing
- 41:57that I know. Well, you already told me all of
- 41:59it might be a improvement over Yuka here, here.
- 42:02So let me pull up my history on Yuka for my chicken nugget
- 42:07exploration. So I had the lightly breaded
- 42:11chicken breast chunks, which sounded really good, right?
- 42:14They're chicken breast chunks. They're not, you know, pureed
- 42:17and then reprocessed together, right?
- 42:20And Yucca app says that they are contain additives to avoid.
- 42:26It says they have monocalcium phosphate high risk texturizing
- 42:30agent, disodium disphosphate texturizing agent and sodium
- 42:35bicarbonate texturizing agent. What's that?
- 42:37Yeah, isn't that baking soda? I don't know, but that's it
- 42:41doesn't like that. And then it says, you know, it
- 42:45gives it 33 out of 100. This is your cup, of course.
- 42:47And then it had the dyno bites. Let's pull those up.
- 42:51Dyno buddies. 63 out of 100. And this one, it said the only
- 42:57additives it had are gargum. Gargum.
- 43:01OK, Yeah. What do you think of Gargum?
- 43:02I had to try and avoid it. OK, limited.
- 43:04Risk, it says. And then it does have the sodium
- 43:06bicarbonate. OK, But it didn't have any of
- 43:08the other things. But I was just amazed because
- 43:10these look so fake. I mean, yeah.
- 43:12And what? Are all the.
- 43:12Ingredients. I don't know, Harris, I'm going
- 43:14to send you a screenshot of this.
- 43:16I mean, they look, yeah, let me actually do this properly.
- 43:18But it they just looks and they're called Dino buddies.
- 43:22Like, that in and of itself seems problematic.
- 43:25Yeah, it says no artificial flavors ever, right?
- 43:28And maybe that's why. And then it says less sodium.
- 43:31So. But it sounds like you would say
- 43:33just say avoid unless maybe you're friends with good
- 43:35ranchers but generally avoid them.
- 43:36Well, no, and the good ranchers ones might be fine.
- 43:39I just haven't done chicken Nuggets, so I don't know.
- 43:41Yeah. If there were better options,
- 43:42I'd probably buy them, yeah. Yeah, what about sugar and, and
- 43:47you know the impact of sugar when you're buying processed
- 43:50foods, you're saying typically don't do it.
- 43:51Well, what if you just buy your barrel of sugar or whatever in
- 43:54your home and you're baking fresh chocolate chip cookies
- 43:56every day? I think that's totally fine.
- 43:57I would get an organic sugar. I like to sweeten with things
- 44:00that are less refined like Maple syrup and honey or even coconut
- 44:03sugar. But we use we use regular sugar
- 44:05on occasion too. I think it's fine and you're
- 44:07going to find that you feel better making them at home too,
- 44:10even if you're using a whole lot of sugar.
- 44:12Just like our grandmas did, you know, they just used real food
- 44:15ingredients and the people weren't having all of these
- 44:17crazy health ailments that we're seeing today.
- 44:20It's true. I mean, it's crazy how health
- 44:22issues have spiked in the last few decades.
- 44:24Yeah, and the packaged foods have so much more sugar than you
- 44:27think. Even the salt too, because
- 44:29sometimes when I'm cooking on camera, sometimes people are
- 44:31like, that's a lot of salt. I'm like, that is not a lot of
- 44:33salt. You should see how much salt is
- 44:35added to the things that you buy or if you go out to a restaurant
- 44:38you no idea how much salt or adding same with sugar.
- 44:40So I think adult humans are not supposed to have more than I
- 44:44think it's 24 grams of added sugar in a day.
- 44:48You will pass that and like you mentioned sodas, if you get 1
- 44:51can of Coke, I think it's like 39 grams or something crazy in
- 44:55one can of Coke. And that's just one drink for
- 44:58the day. Not to mention all the packaged
- 44:59foods or other kinds of things that you might be picking up
- 45:01along the way. Too crazy.
- 45:03Sugar's wild. How important is shopping
- 45:05organic produce versus non organic?
- 45:07I think the most important thing is to be eating more Whole Foods
- 45:11or whole fruits and vegetables. So I like to say if you can go
- 45:15organic. If you can't, don't panic is
- 45:17it's most important that you're just eating food.
- 45:19But if you can go organic because it's going to redo some
- 45:22of those different toxins like pesticides that you're bringing
- 45:25into your home and into your body.
- 45:26Are there certain vegetables or fruits that are more important
- 45:30to go organic versus not? Let's say your budget like half
- 45:33of it like I think I can do half organic, half not.
- 45:36Or maybe the options for just organic aren't there, which are
- 45:38the ones that are like, hey, these these products you should
- 45:40really be trying to do organic, these fruits and veggies versus
- 45:43these other ones. It's not as big of a deal.
- 45:45Items that have a thicker skin on them, I would feel better
- 45:48about getting non organic if I needed to because I'm eating the
- 45:51inside and it's got that barrier of protection on it.
- 45:53And there's also it's the PWG, it's the environmental working
- 45:57group. And every year they come out
- 45:58with their clean 15 and their dirty dozen.
- 46:01And I don't, I don't remember what they put on their list this
- 46:04year, but they, it's easy to look up and they're a lot of
- 46:07times the same offenders on there.
- 46:09And they list the 12 items, the fruits and vegetables that are
- 46:13going to have the highest amount of pesticides.
- 46:15So these are like The Dirty dozen.
- 46:16Let's avoid those when we can. And then the clean 15 like these
- 46:19have the lowest amount. So these are totally OK to buy
- 46:22non, non organic. So that's a good guide to look
- 46:24at too. Someone was telling me that
- 46:26because of the pesticides in the water supply in non organic
- 46:31farming. Again, I don't know if this
- 46:33checks out so let me know what you think about this.
- 46:36It's actually the water loading fruits and vegetables like like
- 46:40a watermelon as an example. It's actually you're of a higher
- 46:44concentrate of pesticides if the fruit is just basically the
- 46:48water, because it's the water that's pesticide.
- 46:51See, that makes sense too. And that would go, oh, sorry,
- 46:53that would go against my thick skin only eating the inside
- 46:56thing. So yeah, that would make sense
- 46:57too. I think about it, you know,
- 46:59because the fruits, it's not like it just magically appeared
- 47:01there. It came from the seed and the
- 47:04root and the plant and it has had a whole life behind it,
- 47:07maybe years. And if this plant has had
- 47:09pesticide exposure to it all over the course of its life,
- 47:12it's going to impact the fruit. Like I think it's the fruit,
- 47:15right? So if I'm I as a person, if I've
- 47:18been exposed to lots of different toxins over my life,
- 47:21everything that comes out of me is going to have some of that
- 47:23exposure too. Have you seen that thing where
- 47:26it's like when you're growing a baby girl that you're not only
- 47:30just growing her, you're growing the eggs inside of her that are?
- 47:34Going on your. Grandbabies, right?
- 47:35So if my body is toxic, it's not just impacting me, it's
- 47:38impacting other generation. I think the same with plants,
- 47:41right? So if we can, go organic, and if
- 47:43you can't, don't panic. I've also heard just on the
- 47:47panic and I was like, the more you learn, you're like, Oh my
- 47:50gosh, that the that the organic fruits and veggies in the store
- 47:54can be tagged organic, but they're because in the last year
- 47:59or whatever the field or you know, wherever they were
- 48:01harvested from, they did not use any pesticides.
- 48:04But that same area or location was pounded with pesticides
- 48:08maybe the year prior, but they were one year pesticide free.
- 48:11So they're able to be like, we're organic, but actually
- 48:13there's a ton of pesticides they'll present in the.
- 48:15Crop right? Or even like neighboring fields
- 48:18with spray. Yeah, yeah, it's never going to
- 48:20be perfect. We do, I say.
- 48:22Grow your own food. What do we?
- 48:23What do we do? Even then, it's in our water,
- 48:26it's in our soil, it's in our air.
- 48:27But yeah, I say do what you can, with what you're able and as it
- 48:30makes sense for you. You do not have to live a life
- 48:32of perfection. We do not need to live in fear.
- 48:35But the small things do add up, for good or for bad.
- 48:37So just do the best you can. I want to check for a minute
- 48:40about clothing. This is something that more and
- 48:43more people are learning about, but it's not mainstream enough
- 48:46yet. So we wear I.
- 48:49I don't know what I'm wearing. Actually, I should know, but
- 48:51likely there is. I hope it's cotton, but it looks
- 48:54cottony. But there is a ton, a ton of
- 48:56clothing today, including underwear, baby clothes,
- 48:58Everything else is made out of plastics.
- 49:01Tell me more about what to look for in clothes and then swaps
- 49:05that people should consider making to avoid toxins in their
- 49:08clothing. Yeah, So any thing that's
- 49:10polyester is plastic. I didn't realize that for a
- 49:12really long time. It's literally I'm just wearing
- 49:14a plastic bag. Also things like nylon and
- 49:17rayon. So I think the most important
- 49:20areas to hit for this are pajamas and underpants and
- 49:25things like that, right? The things that are going to be
- 49:27closest to our bodies and closest to intimate areas, and
- 49:29also things we spend the most amount of time in, especially
- 49:32during sleep and restorative time for kids.
- 49:34Organic jammies for sure, and organic cotton.
- 49:37Organic cotton jammies, Yeah. And if you can, and if you
- 49:40can't, again, if you can't go organic, that's totally OK.
- 49:43Natural fibers are superior. And what?
- 49:46If they're like brightly colored and dyed and they have sparkles
- 49:50on them, is that our problem? Like, I mean, a lot of these
- 49:53even like organic, like it says organic.
- 49:55Like you order something from Carters, Yeah.
- 49:57And it's like bright red or pink and it has like sparkles on it,
- 50:00right? So some of the dyes can be
- 50:01problematic too. So it's just how far you want to
- 50:04take it or how far you can take it.
- 50:06So you can go to like non dyed organic cotton only and live
- 50:10that way. And that sounds totally fine and
- 50:12lovely too. But most of us aren't going to
- 50:14do that. So I don't want you to think you
- 50:16have to do that in order to be like protecting yourself or
- 50:19taking care of your kids or your family.
- 50:21But yeah, I think of the more that we can go with natural
- 50:23fibers, things like cotton, wool, hemp, linen, the the
- 50:27better we're going to be doing for our bodies.
- 50:28That also, now that I I don't live perfectly that way either.
- 50:32I've just been replacing things over time as needed that the
- 50:35more that I wear natural fibers, when I put something on that
- 50:39synthetic fibers, now it feels like plastic and it didn't used
- 50:42to. It's that same concept again
- 50:43where my body got really used to it and felt like this is so
- 50:46soft, but now when I put it on like this feels like I want to
- 50:50sweat it's. A plastic, I mean, it is, yeah.
- 50:54It's like locking it in, right? Yes.
- 50:56What about this goes from bamboo?
- 50:58So that so bamboo is natural, right?
- 51:01And it can be such a soft fabric and I do think it can be a less
- 51:04toxic option, but to take something that's one of the
- 51:07strongest materials on the planet and turn it into a soft
- 51:09fiber, it has to go through a chemical process to become that.
- 51:13So that that's something that you want to consider when you're
- 51:16buying bamboo. Although I do I really I have
- 51:18bamboo sheets that I. Just love like bamboo sheets but
- 51:23they're less toxic you're saying than polyester.
- 51:25They are doing better, yeah. And it is more like that term
- 51:29breathable bothers me too because it's just a marketing
- 51:31term. Polyester is not going to be
- 51:33breathable. I don't care how loose the weave
- 51:35is, it's still plastic. But bamboo is a lot more
- 51:38breathable than something like a polyester too.
- 51:40And I'm I'm not treating. I actually tried.
- 51:42I did linen sheets for a couple of years.
- 51:44But they're scratchy. I love them but they RIP it.
- 51:47Just I don't want to pay $300.00 for sheets that are going to RIP
- 51:50in a year. So yeah, yeah, not for me.
- 51:53But you're just would say cotton, too is like a go, go,
- 51:56yeah. And you can get pure 100% cotton
- 51:58sheets even like Target and Walmart now, so that's awesome.
- 52:01One more section of products I want to make sure we get to is
- 52:04your personal care products. You already talked about no
- 52:06fragrances. What about your brushing of the
- 52:09teeth? Are there toothpaste that you
- 52:11say these are a no go zone? Try to avoid and swap with what?
- 52:17Yeah. So I personally avoid fluoride.
- 52:20It's a known, it's a known neurotoxin.
- 52:23So it can have problems for our brains, and I don't think that I
- 52:27should harm my brain to save my teeth, and I also don't think
- 52:32that I have to. So there are a lot of other
- 52:34options. Like there's a hydroxy appetite
- 52:36has come onto the scene in the last five or ten years that I
- 52:39guess it was used in Japan as NASA, something to do with it.
- 52:42And it can be really protective for teeth without any of the
- 52:46toxins or neurotoxins. And even you can go without the
- 52:50hydroxy appetite and still have a great toothpaste.
- 52:52So some people don't like hydroxy appetite for different
- 52:55reasons. But yeah, I would avoid the
- 52:56fluoride personally. And I also don't like SLS like a
- 52:59foaming agent. We as another thing we got
- 53:02taught it was like the 80's, the scrubbing bubbles and it was
- 53:05like the bubbles make things clean.
- 53:06Bubbles don't necessarily make things clean.
- 53:08They just give us the feeling of that.
- 53:11And so we've taught ourselves in our minds that that's what clean
- 53:14is. What about lotions and other
- 53:16skin care? So again, I would avoid
- 53:18fragrance and those, and then I also just look for different
- 53:21parabens and phthalates and other things like that that will
- 53:24be lurking in the ingredients list.
- 53:26So anything that's there, there's going to be chemicals in
- 53:28some of these things and some of them are less problematic than
- 53:32others. I'm not against all chemicals,
- 53:34but I like to know what kind of risk might be involved in them.
- 53:37So like that Switch Natural app, That Switch Natural app I
- 53:40mentioned is really helpful for something like a personal care
- 53:43product. And what is a makeup product or
- 53:46makeup products that maybe people would be surprised to
- 53:48learn is really toxic? A makeup product, I'm not really
- 53:53sure I think any of them can be, but the ones that well, your
- 53:56lipstick you're ingesting, it's going to be going off your
- 54:00lipstick into your body. So that's probably one that I
- 54:03would think. About what should you avoid in a
- 54:05lipstick? Like what are some things to
- 54:06look for that would be red flags?
- 54:07The parabens, the phthalates, any of those types of things and
- 54:11it can go on. I know some people are concerned
- 54:14about different types of coloring agents that they use
- 54:16and where it comes from and things like that.
- 54:18And what about hair sprays and hair products?
- 54:21Yeah, same. We just used one on you today.
- 54:23Sorry. I know a lot of times.
- 54:26I'm like, I have makeup on that I don't normally use at home and
- 54:29it probably has fragrance in it and things like that.
- 54:31I've I've actually sometimes when I've gotten hair and makeup
- 54:34done, I'd get it or, you know, I go to the salon and let them use
- 54:36their shampoo and then I get a headache later, you know.
- 54:40Yeah. So, you know, it's on occasion.
- 54:41It's not going to destroy you, but if it's something that
- 54:44you're going to be using every single day or regularly, then
- 54:47yeah, consider getting some thing with better ingredients.
- 54:50And there are hair sprays, there are blush, lipstick, everything
- 54:53you can imagine now that have better ingredients for you that
- 54:56work really well too. What's the first personal care
- 54:59product that people should switch?
- 55:00I think deodorant because number one, you're going to buy it
- 55:04again soon. That's something that we go
- 55:06through pretty quickly. And also most deodorants have
- 55:09aluminum in them because they're actually trying to block your
- 55:12perspiration. It's an antiperspirant.
- 55:14We don't want to block our pores from perspiring.
- 55:18It's a healthy part of our detoxification process.
- 55:21And also there the aluminum is really not good for our bodies.
- 55:25It's also a neurotoxin. And so we're applying it not
- 55:28only every single day on our skin, we're putting it in a
- 55:31vulnerable, vulnerable area right into our like a major
- 55:35lymphatic area. And so if we're absorbing any of
- 55:38those different chemicals or ingredients, it's not really
- 55:41good for us. So I would swap deodorant right
- 55:43away, especially you don't have to throw out what you have,
- 55:46although you can, it might not be a bad idea, but once it
- 55:49starts to run low, find one that's healthier ingredients, no
- 55:52aluminum, you don't want an antiperspirant, Get a deodorant.
- 55:55Try and get something without fragrance.
- 55:56And it has a more simple ingredient list.
- 55:58And some of them will work better than others.
- 56:01And we we went on a journey trying to get to a brand or a
- 56:05type that worked for both of us. But now my husband specifically
- 56:08will request like hey buy me that deodorant again.
- 56:11Which one have you found? Family Pure.
- 56:13Primally pure. OK, check out primarily pure.
- 56:15I love that. I Yeah.
- 56:17One other question just on the scent stuff because I also love
- 56:19scents. Yeah.
- 56:20I actually stopped using perfume years ago because my husband and
- 56:24I were we're on kind of on the Kik and we're like, this is not.
- 56:26First of all, a lot of them actually smell bad.
- 56:28Like they're just like, oh, it's too much.
- 56:30And then we realized these are not also good for you.
- 56:32But that being said, still love your scents, like whether it's
- 56:35in deodorant or, you know, hair products or whatever.
- 56:38What do you recommend for body scents?
- 56:41I know you said the thing about you can boil, you know, citrus
- 56:45on your stove, which is that you put lavender in your drawers.
- 56:47What about any other personal care products that you can do
- 56:50that have has a scent? Yeah, so some of them have
- 56:53essential oils added to them, so it might be like a body lotion
- 56:56or a body bomb or something like that.
- 56:57And that can add a bit of fragrance, too.
- 56:59And there are also some less toxic perfumes and colognes now
- 57:02and more brands that are popping up all the time.
- 57:04I actually just ordered from a brand this week to try out and I
- 57:06already forgot what their name is but there there are some that
- 57:10some use synthetics but they're safer synthetics and some use
- 57:12only essential oils or anything in between.
- 57:15So you just have to find out where your balance is there.
- 57:18I want to just talk for a minute about you as a mother and you've
- 57:22made these changes for your kids, for yourself, your
- 57:24husband, your family and your kids and kids, I think love
- 57:29snacks. You know, we have obviously you
- 57:30can do like fresh veggies, fresh fruit.
- 57:33That's a great go to. What are some other go to snacks
- 57:36if they're not the veggie or the fruit option that you think?
- 57:38Hey these are great healthy options for kids.
- 57:39Like packaged. Snacks.
- 57:41There are so many good ones now that didn't exist.
- 57:43Scout bar is one of my favorite ones.
- 57:44They have just like seven ingredients or less and they're
- 57:47all real food. Like I would make a scout Yeah
- 57:49with AK less. Or Z bars.
- 57:52I haven't tried those. I can't remember what's in them
- 57:55or not. Yeah, I'm trying to think.
- 57:57OK so I need to think of ones. I get a lot of our snacks online
- 58:00when I get packaged stuff because the in store options are
- 58:03more limited, but there are some they're coming into stores I
- 58:06know like Lesser Evil, Siete, Midday squares.
- 58:12I'm trying to think there are. There are a lot of good options.
- 58:15I wish I could just riff a bunch of brands.
- 58:16On those are good. You gave us a few tick chomps.
- 58:19Pretty chomps, yeah. Even though they're all wrapped
- 58:21up in plastic. Yeah, you know, it's, it's nice.
- 58:23They're not ideal. They're not boiling that chomp.
- 58:27Do not try your chomp in the microwave.
- 58:31Disgusting. Yeah, yeah, there and a lot more
- 58:34brands are starting to make more options that way too.
- 58:35There's like Boulder Canyon chips you can get at Costco and
- 58:38they cook theirs in avocado oil. Like, that's great.
- 58:41It's just potatoes, avocado oil and salt.
- 58:43That's how I would make them at home if I were doing it.
- 58:45So yeah, I just turn the pack. Even if I give you a brand
- 58:48recommendation, I don't want you to just blindly go, this brand
- 58:51is safe. You know you need to still
- 58:53within any brand, they can have different products that aren't
- 58:57as non-toxic as other ones. You got to turn stuff around
- 58:59reading ingredients. When you strip everything back,
- 59:02what do you think makes a good mom?
- 59:06I don't know the answer to that. A good mom is somebody who takes
- 59:10her job as a mother seriously, who's a Good Wife to their
- 59:14daddy, who cares for their minds, bodies and spirits, who
- 59:19disciples them and raises them up in the way of the Lord and
- 59:23sets a good example with her own life.
- 59:26I love that. What encouragement do you have
- 59:28to moms who are beginning their detoxing journey?
- 59:32It can be really overwhelming, and it doesn't have to be.
- 59:36My encouragement is that you were made by a perfect creator
- 59:40in an imperfect body and an imperfect time.
- 59:44And He knew all that when He made you.
- 59:46And He's given you the tools and the equipment and everything
- 59:51that you need to make a healthier choice for you and for
- 59:54your kids today and every day. And it does not need to be
- 59:57something that taxes you or adds.
- 59:59I know you already carry a lot. And he's not asking you to carry
- 1:00:03more, but he is asking you to carry it well, and he's not
- 1:00:08asking you to carry it alone. He will walk with you every step
- 1:00:11of the way. Beautiful, I have your books
- 1:00:13here. Thank you for writing them and
- 1:00:16sharing them with us. And there's a healthier home and
- 1:00:19a Healthier Home cook, which is so fun.
- 1:00:22Whole food recipes. But this one is this room by
- 1:00:25room guide to make any space a little less toxic.
- 1:00:27How can people find it? Anywhere books are sold.
- 1:00:30Yeah, I, I wrote it not as like a pickup read all the way
- 1:00:34through. And now you flip a switch and
- 1:00:36your life is better. It's about tending the garden
- 1:00:38that is your life and home and body.
- 1:00:40And so it'll be a resource for you that hopefully you'll pull
- 1:00:43off the shelf hundreds of times over the years as you make
- 1:00:45simple or sometimes big swaps along the way.
- 1:00:48Amazing. Thank you so much, Shawna.
- 1:00:51Thank you. Awesome.
