Latest / Run Mountain Peaks / First 50 Mile Ultra, Two Bear Encounters, Zone 1 & Zone 2, Bigs Backyard World Record - Ep.7
Transcript
- 0:00All right, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain
- 0:03Peaks. This past week I had two close
- 0:07encounters with black bears and I spend a lot of time in the
- 0:11woods on trails and seeing black bears is not very common.
- 0:17So to have two on kind of back-to-back trips to the woods
- 0:21was super rare and pretty cool. So I'll tell those stories.
- 0:25And I figured it would be a good time to talk about the Pemi bear
- 0:28from this summer. So there was a bear in the
- 0:31Pemigewasset Wilderness in the White Mountains that was kind of
- 0:34harassing hikers this summer, grabbing some backpacks,
- 0:38grabbing some food. I think it destroyed a couple
- 0:41tents at one point in the summer, so causing mayhem.
- 0:46And then also in the news, there were some incidents in the
- 0:49Ozarks, I believe with black bears this year.
- 0:52That was the first time that that happened in a while.
- 0:54So I figured let's do a Big Bear talk today.
- 0:57We'll talk about bears. I'll tell the two stories and
- 1:00I'll give my thoughts on bears because some people ask me about
- 1:03bears on on my excursion. So I'll do a bear talk.
- 1:07Next up I'm going to talk about my first ultra marathon.
- 1:11So last week I talked about the Mid State Massive, which is the
- 1:14first ultra marathon that I signed up for, but I never went
- 1:18to it. I figure this week I'll talk
- 1:21about the first ultra marathon that I've ever done and
- 1:24finished. It was a race, but it kind of
- 1:26wasn't a race. It was a virtual race during
- 1:28COVID and it's a pretty good story, I think, and kind of how
- 1:32I got started with the ultra marathon running.
- 1:34So I will tell that story building off of last week.
- 1:38Next up, we're going to talk about Zone 1 and Zone 2
- 1:42training. I feel like Zone 2 training has
- 1:47got a ton of buzz in the news, on social media, online.
- 1:51It's always, you just see Zone 2, zone 2, zone 2.
- 1:54And I have been training with this low heart rate method for a
- 1:58few years now. And so I have some thoughts on
- 2:00the zone one, zone 2. Some people get those confused
- 2:05how to train in those zones. So I'll do a zone one, zone 2
- 2:08training talk. And I'm no scientist, so this is
- 2:12just going to be kind of anecdotal stuff about my
- 2:15training and how I've implemented it and how it's
- 2:17helped me because I think it's really improved me as a runner.
- 2:19So we'll do a low heart rate aerobic training talk and then
- 2:27what else we got. I'll talk about my week of
- 2:29training. Throw that in.
- 2:30I went back to the track this week.
- 2:32So I'll I'll do some, I'll just throw in kind of my whole week
- 2:35of training. And then we're going to talk
- 2:36about the Bigs Backyard ultra. So I mentioned this last week,
- 2:40this was the World Championships of the Last Man standing ultra
- 2:45marathon format and some crazy performances.
- 2:51A world record goes down. So we'll do a quick recap about
- 2:55that. And I'm going to do a deer
- 2:59season update. So I'm just going to do that
- 3:01weekly, just do a quick deer season update at the end.
- 3:04And what else do we have on here?
- 3:05And then I have a moose story. I have a moose story slash moose
- 3:09scenario. I guess we'll do this after the
- 3:12bear talk. That's, I don't know, kind of
- 3:14funny to think about. So that is what is on the agenda
- 3:18today so we can dive right into it.
- 3:21So the bear encounters last weekend I was hiking with my
- 3:26girlfriend Jocelyn and we did Mount Moussa Lock, one of the
- 3:304000 footers and it was a good day.
- 3:33It was a nice fall day, like perfect weather, pretty windy up
- 3:36top, but it was a good hike and we were having fun.
- 3:41And one of the things, so Jocelyn is just getting into
- 3:43hiking the 4000 footers, I think maybe 8 or 9 or 10 done this
- 3:48year. So getting into the hiking and
- 3:51the 4000 footer stuff. And one of the things that she
- 3:54always says is, oh, I haven't seen a bear or a moose out, you
- 3:58know, in the White Mountains or out on trail yet.
- 4:01And I kind of tell her, Hey, I go out there a bunch and I
- 4:03never, I never see them. It's very rare that you see
- 4:06wildlife when you're hiking the 4000 footers.
- 4:09I think they're so popular and the woods are so big up there.
- 4:12You just really don't see them too, too often.
- 4:14They're definitely out there and there are encounters, but not
- 4:16too frequently. So that was one thing that we
- 4:18had talked about this summer. I was like, I don't know.
- 4:20We have a pretty good chance this summer of, of seeing one
- 4:24and we did not, we did not see one this summer when we were up
- 4:28there hiking, there was one day at Mount Cannon.
- 4:31There's always black bears. So there's one day we drove by
- 4:34and I was like, I see that little black dot up there.
- 4:36That's a BlackBerry. Seen a bear.
- 4:38She was, she goes closer. Was not too impressed, but that
- 4:42was so cool. I mean, there's always bear at
- 4:43Cannon Mountain, bears on Cannon Mountain.
- 4:46But anyway, so we're talking about this as we're hiking Moose
- 4:49Lock and I forget if we were talking about, Oh, I haven't
- 4:52seen a bear at Moose this summer.
- 4:53I really wanted to, or I think I was telling her the story a few
- 4:57years ago on Mount Moosa Lock. The top like couple 100 feet is
- 5:02all exposed. Like there's no trees or
- 5:04anything. It's above tree line, 360 views.
- 5:07And I think there was a moose hanging out around there for a
- 5:09while a few years ago. I don't know if it was sick, but
- 5:12it was like hanging out at the summit for a long time.
- 5:14Lots of people saw it. It was online and all that jazz.
- 5:18And so I was telling her that story and she was like, oh, I
- 5:20want to see a moose on moose lock.
- 5:21And I was like, yeah, we probably won't, but.
- 5:25And then so we're talking about that.
- 5:27She hadn't seen a moose or a bear this summer.
- 5:28And so we're hiking down the mountain and we're probably
- 5:31like, we just started descending.
- 5:33So we're maybe like, I don't know, 2, still 2/3 up on the
- 5:36mountain, kind of in the Alpine zone.
- 5:39And off to my right, I hear a big branch break.
- 5:43And from my time in the woods, you know that the only like a
- 5:49big game animal is going to break a branch.
- 5:53There's lots of squirrels and chipmunks and little critters
- 5:56that can like make noise in the leaves.
- 5:58And they are, they're usually pretty loud, honestly, they make
- 6:00louder noises than some of the deer, bear, moose.
- 6:03But when you hear a branch break, it's like 99% of the time
- 6:08it's going to be usually it's a deer, but in the whites it could
- 6:11be a black bear, a moose. So I, I hear this branch break
- 6:16and I basically just dive into the brush And because I'm
- 6:20thinking, Oh my gosh, this might be a moose.
- 6:22We were just talking about this. This is the, the chance.
- 6:25So I kind of jump into the brush and it's all kind of thick and
- 6:28blow down and you can't really see far.
- 6:29So I'm kind of walking and I'm making a lot of noise.
- 6:31Like we can't sneak up on it. She kind of follows me a little
- 6:33bit, but I'm kind of hauling through the woods and I and I
- 6:36start making a new, I start doing a moose call.
- 6:39So like a moose in the rut. They do like a weird call.
- 6:42I guess I'll do it quick, But it's like, oh, oh, kind of
- 6:46something like that. So I'm throwing some of those
- 6:49out there because I'm like, oh, maybe I can make it think I'm a
- 6:51moose and it'll come kind of peek in or at least whatever it
- 6:53is, we'll just stop and stand there.
- 6:55So I kind of, I keep going. I'm looking, I finally get up to
- 6:58a spot where I can kind of see a decent amount and I just, I
- 7:01don't see anything And I'm like, ah, you know, I really don't see
- 7:05anything there. There's no moose.
- 7:06There's really, I couldn't go much further.
- 7:08Like it was super thick in the woods.
- 7:09I gave it a shot and I turn around.
- 7:11She's like, oh, you had me excited.
- 7:12And I was like, I know I was kind of excited.
- 7:14Like, you know, it just sounded like a moose or something.
- 7:18So we get back to hiking down trail maybe 5 or 10 minutes
- 7:21later on the left of the trail, it's on a branch break.
- 7:26But I'm hearing lots of stuff in the leaves and going back to
- 7:31noises in the woods like a squirrel or a chipmunk.
- 7:35When they make noises in the leaves, it's going to be kind of
- 7:39like intermittent out of the blue.
- 7:42You're not going to hear anything.
- 7:42And then you hear like a loud like like that's when like a
- 7:45squirrel hop, hop, hop. But then if there's logs, if
- 7:49there's trees, squirrels always climb up on those and hop on
- 7:52those. So like the noise of it
- 7:54crunching through the leaves as it goes, it's usually like
- 7:57intermittent. So it'll be like, and then a
- 8:00little while and then like like a loud one.
- 8:04And so that's kind of like a, a dead giveaway that it's some
- 8:07sort of like small game animal. It's kind of intermittent all
- 8:09over the place and it's more leafy and less, less heavy.
- 8:13Well, this was like consistent heavy loud through the leaves.
- 8:19Like if you think about it, deer, bear, moose, they have 4
- 8:22legs where like squirrels just do little hops.
- 8:25So you're going to hear more steps more frequently and it's
- 8:28going to be a, a straight cadence unless they like
- 8:31completely stop because they're not hopping on branches and
- 8:34stuff. So anyway, I'm hearing like a,
- 8:37a, a big, I'm hearing something and it's pretty close on the
- 8:41trail. I don't see anything.
- 8:43I'm looking and there's kind of some thick stuff.
- 8:45So I kind of on the rocks, I'm kind of quiet rock hopping down
- 8:49and I go like 30 feet past the thick stuff and I'm looking
- 8:51through the woods. It's kind of open and right.
- 8:54Like at the end of this long lane of like visibility, I see
- 8:58like a dark flash in the woods and I'm like, and I mean, Joss
- 9:02is not even close to me. I'm like, Oh my.
- 9:05And I go back and tell her I'm like, I mean, I don't know, did
- 9:07you hear that? She's like, no, I didn't hear
- 9:09that. And I'm like, I, I think like
- 9:1280% I just saw a bear or a moose.
- 9:14Like I'm pretty sure the, the noise lined up with the sight of
- 9:19the, the flat. I saw this flash of dark.
- 9:22I think I just saw a bear and moose.
- 9:23She's like, oh, oh, wow. Like that's cool.
- 9:26Like I, you know, I didn't and cool, I believe and I'm kind of
- 9:30like, no, I really think I, I saw something.
- 9:33She's like, no, I believe you. Like the I don't believe you.
- 9:35I believe you. And, and now it's just like, I
- 9:38mean, the last 10 minutes, I'm just jumping in the woods at
- 9:41every little noise. She probably thinks I'm crazy
- 9:44because I'm always kind of sharing with her like woodsman
- 9:47skills almost, especially during hunting season.
- 9:51I'm like telling her little tips like, Oh, you know, the wind can
- 9:54do different things based on the the topography and, you know,
- 9:57game trails, run along, whatever.
- 9:59So I'm always telling her these woodsmanship skills like I'm
- 10:02some good woodsman, which like I'm really not.
- 10:04And now she just is with me hiking, I'm just jumping at the
- 10:07woods at any little noise that I hear.
- 10:10And so she's like, yeah, this guys crazy.
- 10:12This is why he hasn't got any deer this year, only one.
- 10:16But so anyway, so we keep walking and a little bit further
- 10:21on the chair. I'm still think I know.
- 10:23I know what I saw. I feel like I saw something, but
- 10:25I'm not sure. I have no proof.
- 10:27And so we walk a little further and there's this kind of soft
- 10:30patch of softwood. So it's kind of like the green
- 10:32stuff and it's kind of open. Like it just looked moosey.
- 10:36And I'm like, please just have the moose continue on the path
- 10:39it was going and, and you know, we could see it quick and then
- 10:42we can get on with our day and we don't see anything.
- 10:45And I'm just like, ah, whatever. All right.
- 10:47So we, we keep hiking along. Probably 3 minutes later I'm
- 10:51hiking along and I see down the chair, I see a big black bear.
- 10:55And I'm like, Oh my gosh, bear. And it's still to the left of
- 10:59the trail. And it's kind of like moving
- 11:01parallel down the mountain with the trail.
- 11:03And Jocelyn's a little bit behind me.
- 11:05So I called her, I'm like bear. And she kind of comes running
- 11:09smiling, and she gets up to me. And as soon as she kind of gets
- 11:12up to me, the bear goes behind this big blow down, which is
- 11:15good because it's about to cross the trail perfectly and she's in
- 11:18position. She's here, I see the bear, and
- 11:21then the bear comes out from the blow down 50 yards.
- 11:24It wasn't like a straight trail, so we didn't have like a 100%
- 11:28Clearview, but there were a couple trees in the way.
- 11:32But it was a really good view. And we just saw this big black
- 11:35bear at 50 yards walk right on by and then head to the other
- 11:39side of the mountain. And so we were excited.
- 11:43It was cool to see that. I mean, one, like, I don't see
- 11:46many bears in the woods. So it's just like really cool to
- 11:48see a bear that close. And two, I'm thinking like,
- 11:51thank God we, I'm like, I knew what I saw.
- 11:54You know, I'm not crazy. I saw something.
- 11:57I knew there was a bear. I knew I saw something, I heard
- 11:59something. So I don't know if it was the
- 12:01thing that made the branch break, you know, 10 minutes ago.
- 12:04But anyway, we had that bear encounter.
- 12:07So that was cool. I got we got like kind of like a
- 12:10quick video of just a flash of black after it had crossed over
- 12:13the trail. So nothing worth showing, but at
- 12:15least a visual evidence that we saw a bear.
- 12:19So that was the Moussa lock black bear story.
- 12:22That was Sunday. Monday.
- 12:24I always take a rest day from running and training to usually
- 12:27Tuesday. I go to the track in the
- 12:30morning. No bears at the track.
- 12:32Oh, rewind. After we saw a bear, I said we
- 12:36should they should name this mountain bear a lock because
- 12:42moose a lock. Moose bear a lock.
- 12:43We saw a bear. That joke went over her head
- 12:46just like it went over yours. So we saw a bear on moose a
- 12:50lock. Could call it bear a lock.
- 12:52OK. Oh, God, we might have to cut
- 12:55that. No, leave it in.
- 12:56OK, Fast forward, go to the track and no bears at the track,
- 13:00have a decent track workout, go to work and then after work I'm
- 13:05going out deer hunting for a couple hours just locally.
- 13:09So I'm going out, I meet some guy at the trail.
- 13:14I see some guy at the trail who's also going out and I chat
- 13:16with him for a while. It's kind of always nice to talk
- 13:18to. He was like a good guy.
- 13:20I'd been hunting there for a while and just good to chat with
- 13:22him. So saw him.
- 13:25It was it was like a perfect fall day.
- 13:27So it was just in like a it was a good fall day.
- 13:31So walk into the woods in my spot, I hadn't been in there
- 13:34this year yet and I'm getting close to where I'm going to set
- 13:38up and I'm coming over this kind of knob and it had rained the
- 13:42day before so the leaves weren't super crunchy.
- 13:45Like if it rains. If it's raining or rain that
- 13:48day, the leaves are very quiet. You can't hear anything walking
- 13:50in the leaves. If it rains the day before,
- 13:53usually the leaves are quieter, but they're not like silent.
- 13:57So you're making a little bit of noise, but it's not that typical
- 13:59like super loud crunch where you can just hear something coming
- 14:01from a mile away. So it's pretty quiet.
- 14:04And I'm coming over this knob and apparently this other, this
- 14:08black bear was coming over the knob from the other direction.
- 14:11And we kind of meet and we're like 20 yards away.
- 14:14We both kind of see each other at the same time and we both
- 14:17like look at each other like hello.
- 14:20And so that was up close and personal, personal with that
- 14:23bear and you know, saw it. But immediately I got my, I got
- 14:28my phone on to get on video. I'm like, Oh my gosh, what is
- 14:30going on? This is bear mania.
- 14:32But it's funny too. So got a, got a great look at
- 14:35that bear. I took a couple steps and it ran
- 14:37off. So it was a, it was a brief
- 14:38encounter. It was a close encounter, but it
- 14:40was very quick. But it was funny when the bear
- 14:42first saw me. It's always just kind of funny
- 14:45to me. Like it froze and it was giving
- 14:48me the look because I'm looking right at it.
- 14:50And it's looking at me like, Oh my gosh, does that thing see me?
- 14:53And I'm thinking like it's, it's black in the middle of like
- 14:57light brown Reds. Like it is so obvious that this
- 15:01thing is there. Like they do not camouflage in
- 15:03at all. And it's just like, Oh my God,
- 15:06does it see me? Do I have to run?
- 15:07Does it see me? And I'm like, yes, I see you.
- 15:10And so I took a couple steps and it ran off.
- 15:12So that was that was the second bear encounter.
- 15:14So back-to-back, not days, but times in the woods I see bears
- 15:18and I'm just like, what is going on?
- 15:20But really cool. And going into the bear talk,
- 15:25what do those have in common? Very brief interactions, bear
- 15:31wanting nothing to do with you and only seeing like pieces of
- 15:34the bear, like not seeing a Big Bear right in front of you stand
- 15:39like you just get a flash. You see something quick and then
- 15:42it goes. And that's pretty much what all
- 15:45of my bear encounters ever have been in the woods.
- 15:49And a lot of people ask me like, oh, you're always in the woods
- 15:52or you're always, you know, are you afraid of bears?
- 15:54Are you, are you seeing big bears or I don't know.
- 15:57I feel like bears get a little some sort of stigma to them, but
- 16:02people ask about bears a lot and honestly, I usually just say
- 16:05like, I just never see them is really the the the thing.
- 16:09I really rarely sear them. And if I do, it's pieces, it's
- 16:13brief encounters and then they're out of there.
- 16:15So like, do you have to be afraid of bears in the woods?
- 16:19No, you don't like black, black bears in the woods.
- 16:21No, you don't. No, not saying like I feel like
- 16:25when I was growing up, I I did a lot of hunting and fishing.
- 16:29I was in the woods, but I wasn't in the woods like all the time
- 16:32like I am now. Like, you know, most days I'm
- 16:34getting on trail or something. So I think I was less
- 16:37comfortable in the woods and more maybe, yeah, if you see a
- 16:40bear like, oh, was this a little bit spooky?
- 16:42I had like one incident where I got spooked by a bear once.
- 16:46And so I think it's like normal. It's like human nature to be
- 16:50kind of, you know, on edge a little bit.
- 16:52If you're newer to being in the woods, especially like at night,
- 16:56you know, the woods can be a little spooky at night.
- 16:58Bears can be a little bit spooky.
- 17:00But once you spend a lot of time in the woods, a lot of time on
- 17:03the trails, like, and you have these experiences over and over,
- 17:06like there's really nothing to be afraid of.
- 17:09So yeah, don't be afraid of bears in the woods.
- 17:12It's like the the statistic you're way more likely to get
- 17:15into a car accident than you are to get attacked by a bear, like
- 17:19orders of magnitude thousands of times more probable.
- 17:22And you're not scared to drive to work.
- 17:24So it's kind of like an irrational fear because these
- 17:28incidents just like don't happen.
- 17:29Like there are just there are millions and millions of people
- 17:33using trails all the time and and black bears don't attack
- 17:36humans basically at all. Well, I shouldn't say that
- 17:40because of the the news this year, but very, very one off
- 17:44occasions. Does that happen?
- 17:46So like statistically and logically, it doesn't make sense
- 17:52to be afraid of bears in the woods.
- 17:55Now, I think everyone says like, don't get in between a bear or a
- 17:59Mama bear in their cub. I think that with any animal,
- 18:01bear, bear and bear Cubs, moose and moose calves like don't get
- 18:07in between a mom and their baby. And I think that's just like
- 18:10comes to being like aware on the trail.
- 18:12Like general trail awareness will keep you out of all of
- 18:16these situations that could get you in trouble.
- 18:19So, you know, you don't have to be afraid of wildlife.
- 18:24Honestly, I'm definitely probably more afraid of of a
- 18:27moose in the wild than I am a bear just because moose during
- 18:33like the mating season get really territorial and
- 18:35aggressive and moose like black bears are afraid of you, like
- 18:39kind of terrified of you, most of them, and they just run away
- 18:43immediately. Moose really don't care.
- 18:46They like in places where people hunt them a lot.
- 18:48They are scared of humans, but they don't have any natural
- 18:52predators. So usually when you see a moose
- 18:54on the trailer in the woods, it just stands there.
- 18:56And so, you know, if you get close to it, it's, and it
- 18:59doesn't want to move, it's not going to move because it's just,
- 19:02it's, there's no need to it's, it's massive.
- 19:04You're tiny. So I think moose are a little
- 19:07bit more scary and intimidating. I think there are more moose
- 19:09incidents, like fatal moose incidents.
- 19:11There are very few than bears. But both like the again, the
- 19:16probability of going to work, just driving 10 minutes of work.
- 19:20I have a short commute. Is is much more dangerous than
- 19:24anything in the woods. And honestly, yeah, what am I?
- 19:28The thing that I'm most afraid of in the woods is like one an
- 19:32untrained dog that you know, you have dogs nip at you a bunch
- 19:36because if you come bomb down a trail out of nowhere, don't hear
- 19:39you, A dog is like much more likely.
- 19:42I've had dogs go up me and little nips and go at you just
- 19:46because you're running on the trail and you spook it.
- 19:47Like way more afraid of running into dogs and then sketchy
- 19:50humans. Sometimes you see people that in
- 19:52the woods that are just sketchy and those I've had much more
- 19:56sketchy human and sketchy dog interactions over 0 sketchy bear
- 20:01and moose interactions. So that's, it's kind of like
- 20:05the, the, the classic answer, like, oh, you should be more
- 20:09afraid of driving or flying. Or you should be more afraid of
- 20:12driving than flying or driving than getting attacked by like a
- 20:14great white shark or a bear. I think they're logically that
- 20:18makes sense. I think it's kind of human
- 20:20nature to be a little bit spooked by some of those things.
- 20:23So don't fault yourself or don't.
- 20:25But I think it just takes time being in the woods and just
- 20:28getting comfortable with like being out there and encountering
- 20:30wildlife and you realize that you just have nothing to worry
- 20:34about. So that's the the bear
- 20:37encounters. My thoughts on coming into
- 20:39contact with bears. Now I will say the Pemmi bear
- 20:43from this year. So there was a a black bear,
- 20:46like I said, that was and I think the last couple years in
- 20:49the same area near the Pemmi. So like near AL's head in the
- 20:52Bonds Lincoln Woods, that area, there's lots of campsites.
- 20:56I mean, there's hikers everywhere, but lots of hikers
- 20:58in there. There was a bear that basically
- 21:02the only time a bear gets sketchy is if it gets food
- 21:04trained and like realizes that you have food because I'm pretty
- 21:07sure bears are like food territorial.
- 21:10So if they think if they smell food, if they're know there's
- 21:13food and they're used to like it being bears, they think it's
- 21:16theirs. So there was a bear that was
- 21:18kind of not running away from hikers.
- 21:20And I think some people ended up like putting their bags down.
- 21:23The bear just took the bag and got the food off.
- 21:26So kind of causing mayhem. And I think that just reiterates
- 21:30like food trained bears, that's the only time you're going to
- 21:33have problems. Don't feed the bears, don't
- 21:36leave food out when you're camping and you're not going to
- 21:40have problems. So if you follow those rules, I
- 21:43mean, obviously you can't, everyone doesn't follow rules
- 21:46like that. But as long as a bear isn't like
- 21:48food trained, it's not going to be a problem.
- 21:52Like I was talking to one of my buddies.
- 21:53He works at Cannon and there are bears and bear Cubs all the time
- 21:57on Cannon. I don't they definitely den
- 21:59there. There's lots of food for them
- 22:00like in the ski slopes and he's he works and cuts some of the
- 22:05glades and does some just trail work and stuff.
- 22:07And he's like, oh, we were around the bears and their Cubs
- 22:10every day and there were never any problems.
- 22:11Like you just get used to interacting with them on the,
- 22:17you know, the more you see them. So the only time you're going to
- 22:21run into problems is if you're giving bear food.
- 22:22Don't give a bear food like you see these videos of like people
- 22:25feeding bear on their porches. I would not recommend free
- 22:29country. I wouldn't recommend doing it.
- 22:31So don't food trained bears. Hopefully the pemmi bear.
- 22:35I think they were trying to capture it, but I don't know if
- 22:37they ended up capturing it. I think they tried, but they
- 22:40couldn't do it, which is like, that's like, Oh well, how much
- 22:43of a problem really was it? I mean, obviously it's still a
- 22:46problem, but if you can't catch it, like I figured, just go out
- 22:49there, roll a bunch of honey around or whatever and it if
- 22:52it's in the area, it's going to come by.
- 22:55But and I think there's always bears in the whites.
- 22:58I think stuff gets in the news, but I think there's always kind
- 23:00of bear and there's so many people in camping and stuff and
- 23:03it's hard to be like 100% food clean.
- 23:05So there's always going to be some interactions, but hopefully
- 23:10there's going to be no more incense with the Pemmi bear.
- 23:13And yeah, the next the next couple years you don't have to
- 23:17worry about if you're running something in the Pammy, having
- 23:21to pay a toll to a bear, feed a bear muffin.
- 23:24Is that is that the OK? And then yeah, the Ozarks bear.
- 23:30So there was a bear in the Ozarks that I think two people
- 23:33got killed within the same month in the Ozarks, which is which is
- 23:37horrible and weird. I don't know if it was the same
- 23:40bear. I didn't really read into it too
- 23:42much but I think it was the first time it happened in like
- 23:46150 years. So that just shows the
- 23:48probability of something happening.
- 23:50But that's super, super sad and I don't know what caused it.
- 23:53I think one of them it said was a one off situation.
- 23:57Another one they they study they they euthanize the bear and then
- 24:03they studied it or looked at it and they said there was
- 24:05something micro. I forget the term, but it was
- 24:09like a microscopic UN irregularities with something
- 24:16with the in the central nervous system.
- 24:17Microscopic irregularities in the central nervous system.
- 24:21So something was wrong with that bear.
- 24:23And honestly, I don't know why, but when I first read that, I
- 24:25was like, I think I have microscopic in irregularities.
- 24:29That's why run older marathons. But OK, so that that was the
- 24:34bear talk. So wrap up the bear talk.
- 24:40Yeah, that was all I had. OK, Next up was my first ultra
- 24:43marathon. So last week I had talked about
- 24:46the first one that I signed up for the mid state massive and
- 24:51meeting some other ultra runners, which was cool.
- 24:55And that kind of kicked off my ultra running stuff.
- 24:57And so I signed up for the race. I didn't do it the next year I
- 25:00was going to do that race. Let me try to think no.
- 25:05So the first year that I signed up for this, how it happened the
- 25:08first year I tried to sign up for the race to do 100 mile
- 25:11race. You usually can't just like some
- 25:12of them you can't just show up. But you do have to like qualify.
- 25:14You have to do like a 50 mile race is usually like of equal
- 25:19difficulty is usually the requirement.
- 25:23So I had to run a 50 mile race and I remember thinking this was
- 25:26my mindset back then. I remember thinking, I don't
- 25:28want to run 50 because if I run 50, I might as well just run
- 25:31100. Like they're both going to
- 25:32stink. Like it's going to, it's going
- 25:34to be really hard. That was kind of my mindset
- 25:36getting into it and I didn't even want to do it, but I was
- 25:38like, no, I have to do it to qualify.
- 25:40So this was during COVID and a lot of the races were kind of
- 25:45sold out, hard to get into whatever.
- 25:47But there was one race, it was called the New Year, the Crazy
- 25:50New Year Ultra, and it was a 50 Miller.
- 25:54And basically the the requirement, it was a virtual
- 25:56race. You could run it anywhere.
- 25:58All you had to do was send this guy your GPX file of the 50
- 26:02miles and he would send you a little plaque that said 50 mile
- 26:05ultra or whatever and you had to do it.
- 26:08So it was the new crazy New Year Ultra.
- 26:10You had to do it between January 1st and January 7th.
- 26:13So like the first week of the new Year, that was the time
- 26:17frame and there was only like 4 people that had signed up.
- 26:19I think I got second place out of two that actually did it.
- 26:24So you got second place, you got last place.
- 26:27I think that's how it worked out.
- 26:28But so that, so I signed up for this race and I was going to do
- 26:31it. This is going to qualify.
- 26:33And I had no running experience. I ran a marathon earlier that
- 26:38year. I had run a little bit that
- 26:40fall. I think I ran another just like
- 26:41on my own marathon. This was just on my own
- 26:43marathons during COVID and then I was running maybe a couple
- 26:47times a week, a few miles a week.
- 26:49And I remember I signed up for it and I just had like, I just
- 26:54had like a pair of Rd. shoes. I didn't have a vest.
- 26:57I had nothing, but I had signed up for it and I think I was
- 27:00running, I maybe signed up for it a month prior.
- 27:04So I order a vest, a running vest didn't even have a running
- 27:06vest. I order a running vest.
- 27:08I ran with it one time. I was like, OK, this is good.
- 27:12Got it. Which obviously it's not super
- 27:14complicated, it's just a vest, but I ran with it once.
- 27:17I, I ordered, no, I wore a pair of Nike trail shoes, which Nike
- 27:22isn't really super. They don't make like crazy trail
- 27:25shoes. I think they're getting there,
- 27:26but this was five years ago now, almost four or five years ago.
- 27:31So I had these like Nike Pegasus trail shoes and I had ordered
- 27:37Tailwind, I'd never used it before, I don't think.
- 27:39And I ordered a bunch of snacks and then I trained for like 2
- 27:43weeks. And then it was 2 weeks before
- 27:45the new year. So it was around like Christmas
- 27:47time or whatever. And I was like, well, yeah, I
- 27:48think I ran for like a week or two.
- 27:49And I was like, well, I got a taper now for two weeks because
- 27:52I was learning about tapering. So I had, I had no idea what I
- 27:55was doing, but I was going to do the race.
- 27:57So New Year's Eve is upon us and my, my plan was to get up at
- 28:024:00 AM to do the race and I, I was just going to do 2 mile laps
- 28:11around my neighborhood. Didn't have a huge neighborhood.
- 28:14Two mile laps. I was going to do 25 of them.
- 28:17That was the plan and that's what I did.
- 28:19And so all on road, there was no trails.
- 28:21I thought about doing it on trail, but there was no, I just,
- 28:24we'll just stick to the road. I would circle back to all my
- 28:27stuff every, you know, whenever I wanted to.
- 28:31So that was the strategy and I remember that night, I mean, New
- 28:34Year's Eve is kind of like, I don't know, you get a little
- 28:36excitement like the new year. Like it's just not that I don't
- 28:39usually stand for the ball drop anymore or anything like that,
- 28:41but a little excitement. And I'm running the ultra
- 28:43tomorrow. And I remember like one of my
- 28:45knees was kind of bothering me and I wasn't feeling like 100%.
- 28:48Like I feel like I don't know if I was sick the week before or
- 28:51something or I was just like nervous, but I was feeling kind
- 28:54of off. And I was like, oh gosh, I don't
- 28:55know if I can do this. But I really was in that like
- 28:58Goggins mindset of like, if you can't do it now, you'll never do
- 29:01100 miles. So I was like, all right, I have
- 29:03to just do it. And I remember that night I
- 29:05could not sleep, couldn't go to sleep, was trying to like sleep
- 29:08for a couple hours, couldn't do it.
- 29:10So I stayed up till midnight and I just said, you know what,
- 29:12screw it, I'm just going to go now.
- 29:14Not going to wait till four. So the ball dropped.
- 29:17I got all my stuff, I got ready and I started at 12:45 AM 20/21
- 29:25January 1st. It was a cold night.
- 29:28I think it was like in the teens of the 20s.
- 29:30And so I'm bundled up. I had these like big pair of
- 29:35sweatpants. I remember to wore 2 pairs of
- 29:36pants. I had my naked Nike Trail
- 29:38Pegasuses. I had like a couple layers in
- 29:42like a cotton sweatshirt, my vest, a big beanie.
- 29:46Like I just, I had none of the things that I would run in now
- 29:50even just for a short run, but I was, I had all these snacks laid
- 29:54out, Pringles and, and Skittles and Tailwind and all this stuff.
- 29:58And, and I went, and I remember Googling like the day before,
- 30:05how to run an ultra marathon. And I remember I saw this
- 30:08technique, the run walk technique, which if you've done
- 30:12ultras for a long enough, you know that like most people walk
- 30:15ultras. Someone put in the clip of
- 30:17killing being like walking in an ultra is important.
- 30:20I think he said that once about UTMB and his walking is like
- 30:24power hiking uphill, but walking is important in ultra.
- 30:27Most people walk portions of it. And it was like, I forget what I
- 30:32my strategy was, but I was like, all right, I am going to run for
- 30:352 miles and then walk for .1. And that's what I'm going to do
- 30:39the whole time. Some sort of run for a mile and
- 30:42walk for .1. Some sort of weird running
- 30:45interval thing that I just that Google, this was before AI gave
- 30:49you suggestions. So this is just the first
- 30:51website that popped up on Google how to run an ultra.
- 30:55So I did the run walk technique. I never done it before.
- 30:58I was like, OK, this sounds good.
- 31:00I'll do it. So I just would run hard for two
- 31:03miles, walk for .1 and then run hard for 2 miles.
- 31:07And I think the first, the first half went fine and I was very
- 31:12much like, I was just on that like, yeah, it was more like the
- 31:16motivational, like I wasn't really training.
- 31:18I didn't train super hard forward.
- 31:19It was more like, I just want to do this.
- 31:20It's a hard thing. It's cool.
- 31:21Like I'm going to do it. I'm going to qualify for this
- 31:23hundred. So the first half I, I remember
- 31:25there was no, I don't remember anything, anything big jumping
- 31:30out. I do remember, I don't know if
- 31:31I'll put these in or not. I do remember taking clips every
- 31:34like 6 miles, I would come back, get more water or whatever, and
- 31:39I would take like a video like 6 miles down and I just remember
- 31:42like one of the quotes and it was like, I just look at the
- 31:45game. I'm like, everybody's sleeping,
- 31:47not me. I would just say these kind of
- 31:51like they're funny. They're they're, they're good,
- 31:53good quotes, good to look back at.
- 31:54But every six miles I'd take a little video and just be like,
- 31:59yeah, everyone's sleeping on New Year's.
- 32:00I'm getting after it. So that was the first half of
- 32:03the race. I think at mile 30, my mom came
- 32:05out and joined me. So it was getting sunny and she
- 32:07joined me and did just started running with me, which was very
- 32:12helpful. I think it was in a fair mood,
- 32:14but I think I was getting tired like I was it was hurting and I
- 32:19was getting tired and like running on pavement for after 30
- 32:21miles is and I wasn't going super fast.
- 32:24So but she ran with me, which is good.
- 32:26And I think this is my first ultra experience.
- 32:29I think I definitely maybe was cranky a couple times or like I
- 32:32think I had a headache and one time I was like, mom, I can't
- 32:35really talk too much anymore like I have a headache like
- 32:38please stop talking to me for a second.
- 32:40Sorry, mom, I just wasn't experiencing.
- 32:44And from 30 to 30 to 40, it was just kind of like not having
- 32:48fun. And then I remember at maybe the
- 32:5240 mile mark, I was very low energy.
- 32:54I was ready to be done. And I think I, I played music
- 32:57for the first time and the music really helped me.
- 33:00I think I remember running for 1/2 mile thinking like, Oh my
- 33:03God, I'm, I'm just going to Sprint this into the end.
- 33:06And then like 1/2 mile after I started the music, I just was
- 33:10bonking like I wasn't eating enough.
- 33:12And I just felt horrible and I had to walk again.
- 33:16And then from the last five miles were just horrible.
- 33:19I was thinking like, I'll never do this again.
- 33:21This is not for me. This is not fun.
- 33:23This stinks. Everything hurts.
- 33:25My hamstrings hurt, my knees hurt.
- 33:26Not fun. Barely moving the.
- 33:29And that was like my first introduction to like, yeah,
- 33:31these are really hard. And I remember I had all this
- 33:34food stuff. I I just drank Tailwind the
- 33:36whole time because my stomach was like upset or something.
- 33:39And I couldn't, I didn't want to eat anything else.
- 33:42So that's how it went. But I finished it and I finished
- 33:45it and I think it was 9 hours and 22 minutes.
- 33:48I don't know what pace that is, but I think it was good for my
- 33:52first one, for doing the run walk technique for all the, for
- 33:54all the stuff. I think I'm, I'm proud that I
- 33:56got to the end of it. And I remember my legs were so
- 33:59sore at the end. And yeah, I think like every
- 34:03ultra, every hard ultra, you get to a point where like, I don't
- 34:06think I like this anymore. This is not for me.
- 34:09And then, you know, not even a couple days after you're like, I
- 34:14need to get better at this. I like, I want to get better.
- 34:17I need to do better. I want to feel that pain again.
- 34:20So that was my first ultra that kicked it off.
- 34:25And again, Congrats to me for coming in 2nd and that race out
- 34:28of two, you can make the, what is that guaranteed podium?
- 34:33Guaranteed podium with a race of two people in it.
- 34:35So yeah, that was my first marathon in my first story.
- 34:42Maybe I'll throw in those videos, but maybe not.
- 34:46I don't know if I can even find them.
- 34:50All right, it is 2021. How do I flip this?
- 34:59I don't know if I can flip this. I got my backup watch here,
- 35:06going to throw that in the pack and then I'm going to set watch
- 35:10I'm running with once I get started and we're on for 50.
- 35:15It's I think it's almost 1. So maybe if you do in 10 or 11
- 35:20hours be done by noon. See how it goes.
- 35:27So it's January 1st. Sign up for the virtual crazy
- 35:33new year run 50 miles and my plan was to get up at 4:00 and
- 35:42start then but couldn't really sleep.
- 35:43So you got to do it between January 1st, January 9th.
- 35:47This is the 1st 1:00 AM. Let's do it right now.
- 36:00We're in and I just stopped for the first time, so got more
- 36:07water and uh, she can keep to it times it 145, let's get it.
- 36:13She stopped back in the house. Second time, got 12 1/2 miles,
- 36:16two hours in. Let's get it.
- 36:19All right, that was the third stop to refill now almost 19.
- 36:29Feeling good. 351, so a little over 3 hours.
- 36:35Everyone's sleeping. Not me.
- 36:40Let's get it. All right, we're at 25 halfway.
- 36:54It's five O 2, so 4 hours and maybe 20 minutes Feeling good.
- 37:01I know that these videos probably suck, but whatever.
- 37:09I feel like I don't know, I'm in the frame of this one.
- 37:11I feel like this one might be all right.
- 37:13I was thinking about it this the last hour.
- 37:15I'm going to get that next video.
- 37:18So here we go. It's 5O3.
- 37:21I've seen one one car so far tonight, one car and no people.
- 37:25Everyone's still sleeping. All right?
- 37:3029 three got me, Mom. Whoa, slow down, Tiger. 555333
- 37:42about sunrise. 17 more. 39 three.
- 37:48Sun's up a mother. And we got one more Tracy.
- 37:58I'll let them on my house 43 four 848 so yeah, I guess it's
- 38:10chosen the time there, but 8 hours I'm alone for these couple
- 38:17laughs. My mom's gonna come for the last
- 38:21one now. She's trooper.
- 38:23But uh, I got music, so maybe that'll help.
- 38:29I'm not sure. I got, we got to get it by 10.
- 38:35We got to get it by 10 hours. I mean, 4th, 6, 1/2.
- 38:42We'll see. Let's get after it.
- 38:46So that was my first ultra. I think eventually I'll recap
- 38:49all the ultras and ultra efforts that I've done as I feel see
- 38:53fit. But yeah, that was my first
- 38:55ultra marathon. I'm sure a lot of you guys have
- 38:58similar first ultra stories, so would be interested to hear
- 39:04other people's kind of crazy stories.
- 39:05But everyone's first ultras. Oh, what is this?
- 39:09And then it just, wow, this is really hard, but I think I need
- 39:12to do more. OK, that was my first ultra.
- 39:17Now we're getting getting into some training talk.
- 39:20Oh, the moose story. Now we'll do the moose story
- 39:22before the training talk. If you're here for the training
- 39:25theory, I appreciate you. You have to wait a little
- 39:27longer. OK, The moose, the moose story.
- 39:30So this goes back to the bear stuff, being more afraid of
- 39:33moose than than bears. I always have this thought.
- 39:38And this is just like maybe a sign that I spend too much time
- 39:41in the woods, but I have this thought if I'm in the woods and
- 39:45like I had a moose, a big bull moose that was maybe it took
- 39:50bath salts or was just like out of its mind.
- 39:52It wanted to attack me. What is my strategy?
- 39:56I'm running along, I'm hiking or whatever.
- 39:58And I just see out of nowhere, just this big moose come
- 40:00crashing through the woods. What what is my reaction?
- 40:06Like? What is my game plan?
- 40:07Like I got a game plan this. So here is what I've thought
- 40:11about. I think there's a few options.
- 40:14I think, well, with a moose, like unlike a bear, they can't
- 40:17climb a tree. So I think ultimately to get to
- 40:19safety, you have to climb a tree.
- 40:21So climbing a tree now it depends if you're like in the
- 40:25Alpine, if you're down low, but let's just say it's a good mix
- 40:28of like regular woods around New England.
- 40:32A bear is coming at you. I think there are two types of
- 40:34trees that you can go for. You could go for like a hemlock
- 40:38tree or a tree with lots of branches on it.
- 40:41That's like easy to climb and you can get high up in the tree.
- 40:46And I think that's one option. But I think sometimes hemlocks,
- 40:50it's hard to to there's so many branches that it's kind of hard
- 40:53to climb quickly and you kind of got to Turk your body.
- 40:57And so if you jump up and start climbing a tree with lots of
- 40:59branches, it'll take you a little bit to actually, it's not
- 41:03just like a ladder that you can fly up.
- 41:05You got to kind of maneuver around the branches and you
- 41:08might just get up a little ways and then you're at horn height
- 41:10and the thing just come and horns you.
- 41:12So I don't know if a lot of branches is going to be quick
- 41:15enough for a minute. Get out of the danger zone.
- 41:20Of course, once you get out of the danger zone, you there's
- 41:22lots of branches. You can kind of just hang out up
- 41:24there and you're safe for and you're good and the moose going
- 41:26to have to go off. I think the other option would
- 41:29be some somewhat of like a fireman's pole tree, like a
- 41:33skinnier tree with no branches, but you can kind of run, get a
- 41:37good jump and then do a couple shimmies up really quick.
- 41:40I think that's a quicker way to get out of the danger zone.
- 41:46But I think if you get up there and it sticks around for a
- 41:49little bit, like how long can you just bear hug the pole and
- 41:52not slide down to the crazy moose?
- 41:57I don't know. And the other thing is I've
- 41:59never tested it. I can't test it right now.
- 42:02I've never tested it. But are you even going to be
- 42:06able to do a few shimmies? Because again, if you can't
- 42:09shimmy up it, you just get 1 jump, you're at horn height,
- 42:12you're done for. So those are, I think, the two
- 42:14options. And again, this is hypothetical,
- 42:18but Moose don't do this. This is like a crazy.
- 42:21This is one of my crazy little just situations that I made-up
- 42:27in my brain. This would never happen,
- 42:28hopefully. But those are the 2 two plans
- 42:33between the two. If I had to pick one, I just
- 42:36feel like my senses would send me up the fire pole quicker.
- 42:41I don't know. I think it would just be a safer
- 42:43option instead of like a monkey around with like branches and
- 42:46maybe if you fire pull up high enough the tree will bend and
- 42:50then you can kind of like squirrel over to the next tree
- 42:52if you really need to. So I don't know though what
- 42:55would happen. But I think 1/3 option.
- 42:57I think this is the most risky, but I think this is the highest
- 43:01reward. The third option is you find
- 43:04like a big bushy tree or a big a really large diameter tree.
- 43:10And let's say you have two seconds.
- 43:11This this bull moose is at on you.
- 43:15You take those two seconds, you you hit a tree.
- 43:18I mean, the bull moose are are huge.
- 43:22They don't have great eyesight and I wouldn't say that I
- 43:24wouldn't think that they're super agile.
- 43:26I'm wearing hocus. OK, I'm trail running in hocus.
- 43:29So I'm thinking you go, you take those two seconds, you let get
- 43:34the moose right on your butt and then you go around a big tree
- 43:37and you do a hard like 5050 or no 90° angle or like AU turn
- 43:43around the tree, the bull moose goes flying by.
- 43:46That gains you an extra few seconds.
- 43:49So now let's say you have 5 seconds.
- 43:51Now you have a much better selection of tree to jump up and
- 43:55do the fire pole or do that. I think you have your brain can
- 43:58process it a little bit and get a a little better tree instead
- 44:02of just throwing yourself at the closest tree.
- 44:05So I don't know. I think if you're willing to
- 44:08risk it, I say you do a little bull moose Olay with a little
- 44:12red flag. You use your Hokas, your
- 44:14agility, you bang, you hit a quick right and then you find a
- 44:17better tree, the ideal tree within your range.
- 44:21And then you jump up and you climb up in it.
- 44:24And I think that's how you escape a bull moose that take
- 44:27has taken bath salts and and wants you.
- 44:32I don't know where I came up with that, but that is those are
- 44:34my strategies. And do I have do I have anything
- 44:38else to say about that? No, I thought that would just be
- 44:41kind of like a fun hypothetical to think about.
- 44:46I thought there's one other thing, but I guess I'm, I guess
- 44:48I'm forgetting it. Sometimes I have like I have
- 44:50topics I want to talk about or little things I want to put in
- 44:54and I completely forget them when the camera rolls.
- 44:57So yeah, that's that's the bear talk or that's the moose
- 45:01situation. If you have any opinions on the
- 45:04best way to avoid a moose on bath salts, comment them and let
- 45:10me know. But OK, now into something now
- 45:15into something serious. Now let me tell you about zone
- 45:17one, Zone 2 training. No, let's talk about zone 1 and
- 45:22zone 2 training. Easy training one will say.
- 45:26I guess let's start by defining off what is zone one?
- 45:29What is zone 2 training? Basically there are different
- 45:33models of training. I think there are two very
- 45:38popular models. So there's a three zone model,
- 45:43which is zone one, zone 2, zone 3, that's it.
- 45:46And there's a 5 zone model, zone 12345.
- 45:49Obviously more zones, a little bit more complex, but we'll
- 45:54start with a three zone model. So in a three zone model, zone 1
- 46:00is really zone 1 and zone 2 of the five zone model.
- 46:03And that upper threshold of zone one in the three zone and zone 2
- 46:08in the five zone is like your aerobic threshold they call it.
- 46:12And basically if you, I just said early in the pockets, I'm
- 46:17not a scientist, will dabble in it a little bit and then I'll do
- 46:20more anecdotal stuff. But when you're running, you use
- 46:24two different systems. You use your anaerobic system,
- 46:27which is sprinting high output and you build up lactate.
- 46:31You've heard of lactic acid, you build up lactate acid in your
- 46:34muscles. And when you're running
- 46:35anaerobically, that lactic acid, you're putting so much high
- 46:39output that it's a byproduct of kind of utilizing your energy
- 46:44and then you produce lactic with eventually shut your muscles
- 46:48down. Aerobic training is basically
- 46:52you stay under the threshold of lactate production.
- 46:55So it's lower intensity training and you can do it for a long
- 46:59time. And that's like the basic of
- 47:01endurance training is your aerobic capacity, we'll call it.
- 47:06So sprinters want to be really good at anaerobic, using their
- 47:10anaerobic system, putting out as much output as they can for a
- 47:13short period of time and becoming good with lactic in
- 47:17their muscles. And then long distance runners,
- 47:20endurance runners, ultra runners, they want to be really
- 47:23good at at running in that aerobic system where you're not
- 47:28producing lactate, where you can just go forever.
- 47:30And those are like the two basically systems for running.
- 47:35And so if you look at lactic acid production in your muscle,
- 47:42that is like what defines this aerobic and anaerobic limits,
- 47:46basically in your blood, you're going to have lactic acid
- 47:48buildup. And two millimoles of lactic
- 47:50acid is basically the cutoff for that zone 1 and zone 1 and zone
- 47:552 threshold. And the reason why 2 millimoles
- 47:59is like a big number is if you look at your lactic acid
- 48:02production on a graph, it basically goes like this.
- 48:06And then at 2 millimoles, it goes up much steeper.
- 48:10And so for that first section here, before the graph goes way
- 48:14up and you start producing a lot of lactic and your muscle start
- 48:16shutting down, lactic acid buildup is very minimal and it's
- 48:20very low. It's about the same.
- 48:22And so that basically threshold is your aerobic threshold and
- 48:27anything below that is aerobic training.
- 48:29And like I said, for long distance efforts you want to be
- 48:32as aerobically fit as you can. That is like the staple of
- 48:36endurance running. How aerobically fit are you?
- 48:38So to train that aerobic fitness, you want to train in
- 48:43that zone one or zone 2. Now zone one or zone 2, When
- 48:49people say zone 2 training is the best, they're talking about
- 48:51A5 zone model. It's basically the upper end of
- 48:55your aerobic working before you get past your aerobic threshold.
- 48:59That's what like the zone 2 training is about.
- 49:01That zone is the most powerful for developing your aerobic
- 49:05system. Now, all endurance runners need
- 49:08that aerobic system. You can.
- 49:11It is good to have strong legs and be good under anaerobic
- 49:14conditions. But if you don't, if you train,
- 49:17if you're running hard all the time, you're not going to have
- 49:21that aerobic base. And you might get faster for a
- 49:23little bit in the short term, but in the long term, you're not
- 49:26going to develop as a runner. So the base of your training,
- 49:29like 80% of your training needs to be aerobic at least, and most
- 49:34of it should be in that zone or zone 2.
- 49:37Now, how do you decide between zone one or zone 2?
- 49:41Basically, if you're staying healthy and you're getting
- 49:45faster, that is a good sign. Whatever you're doing is working
- 49:51Some people's aerobic threshold so that zone 2 like elite
- 49:54runners, they'll be in the five something minutes per mile pace
- 49:58like Sprint like so fast and they can't run Zone 2 every day.
- 50:05If they run zone 2 every day, they're going to get hurt
- 50:08because they're so aerobically fit their their muscles and
- 50:11their tendons cannot take it. So they are going to do most of
- 50:15their training in zone 1, some of theirs training in zone 2.
- 50:19And then there's speed work higher than their aerobic
- 50:21threshold. Now most of us aren't running
- 50:24aerobically at A5, whatever minute mile.
- 50:27So you can probably do more zone 2 training because aerobically
- 50:32you're not as fit as those top end performers.
- 50:36So you need to find a balance of where you're staying healthy and
- 50:39getting faster and you're not doing too much, too much too
- 50:43hard, You know, too fast running.
- 50:45They say run your easy runs easier and your harder runs
- 50:47harder. And that that basically goes
- 50:49into the zone one, zone 2. Now the whole goal of endurance
- 50:53training, it's you increase that aerobic threshold.
- 50:58So if you're doing ultra marathons, the goal is to make
- 51:01that aerobic, the pace that you can run aerobically as close to
- 51:06the pace that you can run while you are anaerobically as you
- 51:09can. So like elite sprinters, they
- 51:12may run a super fast pace for 20 minutes, but they can't run.
- 51:19But the the pace that they can run for 10 hours is not close to
- 51:23that pace. The ultra runners basically want
- 51:26to, they don't care about what they can run for 20 minutes.
- 51:29They basically want the pace that they can run for 10 hours
- 51:31to be as close as they can to that pace that they could run
- 51:34for an hour. That's how you know you're
- 51:37aerobically fit. If the pace that you can hold
- 51:40for hours on end is close to a pace that you can hold for like
- 51:44an hour, then you're doing good aerobically.
- 51:48So that is like the goal, the whole goal of endurance running.
- 51:51And to get there, you have to be doing a zone one or zone 2.
- 51:55Now, when you first start running in these zones, it is
- 51:59not going to be fun because if you haven't been running in
- 52:03these zones, it's probably just going to be a really slow pace
- 52:05or it's going to be slower than you than you want to be running.
- 52:09A lot of people are training, I think too fast.
- 52:12They're running too fast all the time and they're not developing
- 52:15that aerobic capacity. When you start out with the Zone
- 52:18one, Zone 2 training, it's going to be lower heart rate and lower
- 52:23paces, like much slower paces. And at first you're going to be
- 52:27frustrated. But what I've seen over the
- 52:31years, the last few years is it doesn't happen quickly.
- 52:35But if you get to running in that lower heart rate, that
- 52:38aerobic state, eventually your body will catch up and it will
- 52:42get better at keeping that heart rate low and not in not using as
- 52:47much energy when ATV is all over the place.
- 52:52Sorry about that. So what I find now is when I go
- 52:57on, even when I'm pushing on longer efforts, I've been doing
- 53:01so much low heart rate training that it's hard to get my heart
- 53:06rate up for a long time. I have to be like sprinting.
- 53:08I can go out like moderate paces for a very long time and my
- 53:11heart rate isn't getting super high.
- 53:13Now, muscularly your legs are going to need to be fit and
- 53:17strong and be able to take that beating over and over, but it's
- 53:20going to be let you're using less energy to do it.
- 53:23And that takes time. Like it took me years to really
- 53:26be like, oh, wow, my heart rate is staying really low, you know,
- 53:29compared to what it used to be a couple years ago.
- 53:32And so I didn't touch a ton about heart rate, but that that
- 53:35low zone one zone 2 training. Really you want to look at your
- 53:40lactate. That would be like to determine
- 53:42the zones, but you can really go on on heart rate to get a really
- 53:46good gauge of your zones. And it's really just low heart
- 53:48rate training that you've probably heard about.
- 53:51So like zone one training, people never want to put out
- 53:54numbers, but it's like if you do, you can do calculators
- 53:59online. But for most people it's going
- 54:02to be like maybe in their one 20s, one 30s, one 40s, depending
- 54:07on your age. And that zone 2 is going to be
- 54:09like one 30s, one 40s, one 50s, depended on your age, heart
- 54:13rate. And basically you want to be
- 54:18doing as much of that as you can.
- 54:21I think structuring a training plan, you want to have speed
- 54:25workout, speed workouts, long runs, hillstrides, and then
- 54:30everything else should be easy Running zone one, zone 2.
- 54:34Now I talked a little bit, how do you know should I do zone one
- 54:37or zone 2? Like they're both aerobic ones
- 54:40faster, a little bit more intensity and one slower and
- 54:43super low intensity, whatever you're feeling.
- 54:46So I think schedule a bunch of easy runs if you're feeling kind
- 54:49of meh, if you're feeling rundown, tired, sore from the
- 54:52next day, go zone 1-GO super easy.
- 54:55Like on zone one runs. If it's cool out in the fall, I
- 54:59don't even sweat that much. I could have a chitchat
- 55:01conversation the whole time. Like it is extremely casual and
- 55:06it makes running fun. Like I think people run too hard
- 55:09too much and they're like half running isn't fun.
- 55:11If you just go out on a trail, run super easy.
- 55:14It's not strenuous and you just get get some fresh air and get
- 55:16to go explore places. It's actually fun.
- 55:19That's what your training should be like.
- 55:21Whenever you're feeling meh, if you had a hard workout, go zone
- 55:25one. Now, if you have it, if you're
- 55:27scheduling an easy run and you're feeling good, you just
- 55:30have a lot of energy and you want to go a little bit faster,
- 55:33go zone 2. You're going to be more
- 55:36productive in that aerobic zone. If you're not injured, you're
- 55:39not sick, and you're feeling good, you're probably not
- 55:42overtraining. So go a little bit faster and go
- 55:44in that zone 2 area. So and the more you do that over
- 55:51time, the more you will develop as a runner.
- 55:54Your aerobic system can continue to develop into your 40s.
- 55:59Like that's why there are so many like the best marathoners
- 56:02in the world, ultra marathoners in the world are not, are not
- 56:07all in their just young 20s out of college like a lot of
- 56:09professional sports. Your aerobic system can develop
- 56:12and that is the basis of all ultra running.
- 56:15Anything over like a 5K10K, it's just aerobic development.
- 56:21So if you do spend more time in zone one or zone 2, your
- 56:24aerobics only going to get better.
- 56:26Do speed workouts, do hill strides, do long runs and stay,
- 56:31stay healthy. Make sure you're getting faster.
- 56:33Try to push yourself on those speed workouts, those hill
- 56:36strides, those long runs, do some races, and then the rest of
- 56:40it just do zone one, zone 2. Super easy, and I promise you,
- 56:43you will get faster. But it does not happen quickly.
- 56:47You can get really fit really fast if you're doing a lot of
- 56:50hard efforts, but it is unsustainable.
- 56:53You're going to get hurt, your aerobic development is going to
- 56:56eventually catch up and you're going to plateau.
- 57:01If you're in, if you want to get long, if you want to get better
- 57:04at running faster for years to come, you have to be focused on
- 57:09easy running. Zone one, Zone 2, that's the
- 57:12zone one. Zone 2 talk.
- 57:13Like I said, I'm not a scientist, so I know some of
- 57:15that was kind of like not explained super well, but that's
- 57:19what you get here. You get crazy bear stories and
- 57:21you get a little bit of hoopla, but OK.
- 57:25Next up, the bigs Backyard Ultra.
- 57:30We'll just touch on this quick. The results start off a new
- 57:34world record for the woman's last man Standing Backyard ultra
- 57:38style races. Sarah Perry of Great Britain
- 57:42runs for 95 straight hours, 396 miles, so she was one lap away
- 57:50from 400 miles. She runs for almost 100 hours,
- 57:54so 95 straight hours of running 4 miles every hour.
- 57:58That is just insane. She sets a new world record.
- 58:02Congrats to Sarah Perry. And then the overall winner was
- 58:05Australian Phil Gore. He ran for 475 miles, 114
- 58:13straight hours, almost 5 days of running.
- 58:18If you think that you are tough, if you are mentally strong, if
- 58:24you got grit, think again. You have so much more grit and
- 58:30mental strength to achieve. Like, can you?
- 58:33Because I promise you, you probably are not going to be
- 58:35able to run five straight days. That is next level insanity.
- 58:42And honestly, it takes a lot of grit and a lot of toughness.
- 58:45And he's got these people are maxing out on on that stuff.
- 58:49But I also think people are getting very good at like this
- 58:52race format. They're getting very good at
- 58:55what paces work for them. They're it's like a NASCAR crew
- 58:59pit. They know exactly what they need
- 59:00to eat, what they need to drink, have their massages when how
- 59:04much to sleep. I'm just sleep 7 minutes this
- 59:06lap or whatever. They're getting this down to a
- 59:08science. They're pushing the limits of
- 59:10the human body. Guys.
- 59:12I don't know how much further we need to go here. 5 days straight
- 59:16of running. Like how much, how much crazier
- 59:19could it get? I mean, could some, I don't even
- 59:22know what's the maximum, what's the maximum output?
- 59:26If if people just get better at this over the years, will
- 59:28somebody eventually get to 1000 miles?
- 59:30I have no idea. Like this is just, it's just
- 59:32insane to think about. And then third place overall was
- 59:35Harvey Lewis of the US. He's a big ultra last man
- 59:40standing guy. He's been doing, he shows up and
- 59:43puts up crazy performances. He did 111 laps, so he he's in
- 59:47the podium too. I don't really think there's a
- 59:49podium at at last man standing races.
- 59:51It's pretty much just the winner.
- 59:53Everyone else DNFS and then the assist usually gets an attaboy,
- 59:58a pat on the back for 2nd place because basically you need the
- 1:00:012nd place person for the 1st place person to get however many
- 1:00:04miles that they got. So that was the biggest backyard
- 1:00:08ultra they ran for 4/5 days out there.
- 1:00:12A world record goes down. Humans are getting freakish,
- 1:00:17freakishly tough. I don't know how.
- 1:00:19I mean, we've all been tough, but people are pushing the
- 1:00:21limits. It's cool to see.
- 1:00:23And, yeah, everybody listening. Could be stronger, could be
- 1:00:26tougher. So just get to it.
- 1:00:31All right. What else?
- 1:00:32We got the. Yeah, we talked about that.
- 1:00:37Oh, my week of training. Yeah.
- 1:00:38We'll just do a quick week of training.
- 1:00:40So this week I talked about. So yeah, Monday, rest day,
- 1:00:44Tuesday I did a track workout, was my first track workout and I
- 1:00:47thought it was a few months. I posted a YouTube video if you
- 1:00:50were interested. I thought it was a few months.
- 1:00:51I think it was six months since I had a ton of track workout.
- 1:00:54So I did a three by one mile interval workouts with a lap in
- 1:01:00between of like easy running. It went fairly good.
- 1:01:04That workout itself I think is a good predictor of your 5K pace
- 1:01:08because it basically your legs can hold that output.
- 1:01:13And then on race day, you can, you can usually red line with
- 1:01:17the adrenaline and and whatnot to get close to close to that,
- 1:01:21the pace that you did for each of the the reps.
- 1:01:25So it went fairly well. I think it was actually one of
- 1:01:27my better. I don't, I think it was about
- 1:01:29tied for like the best workout I've done in that style.
- 1:01:34But I didn't, I didn't have my big shoes on.
- 1:01:37I didn't have my carbon plated big shoes, super fast shoes.
- 1:01:41So that would have added a little bit of time.
- 1:01:43So it was like a good workout, but I hadn't done track in a
- 1:01:45while. And I think it's really good to
- 1:01:48mix in track workouts. Like I talked about in the
- 1:01:50video, you need one of the biggest predictors of ultra
- 1:01:53marathon performance is your just speed your 5K10K times.
- 1:01:59So if if you're really fast 5K10K person and you put in a
- 1:02:03ton of volume to get your legs ready for an ultra marathon,
- 1:02:06you're probably going to do really well.
- 1:02:07So I think it's something that you should really mix into your
- 1:02:10training. If you're not doing track stuff
- 1:02:11once a month, I think it's like a good if you don't have an
- 1:02:14injury because they are really hard on on the legs.
- 1:02:17If you don't have an injury mix and track once a month and do
- 1:02:21like fast intervals, like a mile or less intervals or shorter
- 1:02:27intervals and that's just going to boost your top end speed.
- 1:02:30Like my legs were decently sore after the next day.
- 1:02:32So there's like muscles and muscle fibers that I'm probably
- 1:02:34not recruiting when I'm just doing hill workouts.
- 1:02:37I do a lot of hill workouts, Stairmaster workouts, and I
- 1:02:41think combining those two together, you're working two
- 1:02:43different muscles and they're both going to help you in the
- 1:02:45mountains. The stairs are more specific.
- 1:02:48The track is more just speed oriented.
- 1:02:51You're going to develop better as a runner.
- 1:02:53So I think yeah, mixing track workouts, working in top end
- 1:02:56speed, always do your hill strides.
- 1:02:59And that was my Tuesday workout. Wednesday, yeah, my ankle was a
- 1:03:05little bit sore after the track, but it was, it was fair.
- 1:03:08I think Wednesday I just did an hour 15 on the bike.
- 1:03:11So I'm doing whenever I have something that's a little bit
- 1:03:14sore bothering me, I just do my easy stuff, cross training on
- 1:03:17the bike or on the stair climber.
- 1:03:19So I did an hour and a half on the bike.
- 1:03:22And then Thursday I did a trail run with some hill strides, like
- 1:03:28a moderate trail run, moderate on the uphills, easier on the
- 1:03:31downhills and then some some hill strides.
- 1:03:35Friday I did easy bike again. I think I just did an hour.
- 1:03:41And then today I did stairs. I did.
- 1:03:46I went and did the stair climber.
- 1:03:47And tomorrow I'll do a longer trail run just because I had
- 1:03:50some stuff to do today. Couldn't get up north.
- 1:03:53So that was my week of training. I think the big take away from
- 1:03:57this week is mix in track. If you haven't in a while,
- 1:04:01you're probably going to grab a little bit of gains that you've
- 1:04:04been putting off. And then if you have an injury,
- 1:04:08you do a track work out easy. Sub in cross training for your
- 1:04:13easy runs. Keep developing that aerobic,
- 1:04:17you know, those are the takeaways, I think.
- 1:04:21Anything else? Yeah, always do your hill
- 1:04:23strides. That's always a take away.
- 1:04:24So that was my my week of training.
- 1:04:27I kind of wanted to do a harder effort in the mountains next
- 1:04:31week. But I I kind of have a lot of
- 1:04:33stuff going on and I think it's getting icy up there.
- 1:04:37And so we're kind of getting into shoulder season in the
- 1:04:40mountains. So harder, faster efforts you're
- 1:04:42just kind of risking with ice and leaves and stuff.
- 1:04:45And so I may be shutting down some of the faster efforts until
- 1:04:51until the trails get snowed in up north.
- 1:04:53So yeah, we're at an hour here. OK, so we're going to wrap this
- 1:05:00thing up soon. So that's all.
- 1:05:02Those are all the running topics.
- 1:05:04Last thing I wanted to do quickly was a deer season
- 1:05:07update. So like I said, I'm just going
- 1:05:11to start doing these weekly. No deer this week, went out a
- 1:05:15handful of times, did not see anything and I'm kind of just
- 1:05:19getting my butt handed to me a little bit.
- 1:05:22I think I had a really good deer season last year and at this
- 1:05:26point last year I think I had, I had got 4 deer this year.
- 1:05:29I just have one small deer so far and I think I've haunted
- 1:05:33more than I did last year. So I'm doing something wrong
- 1:05:37now. I don't know if I'm doing
- 1:05:38something wrong, but there are some takeaways.
- 1:05:40It's yeah, I've haunted more than I did last year.
- 1:05:43So I'm putting the time I'm in, but I think this year has been a
- 1:05:47little difficult for a few reasons, and here are just my
- 1:05:50general takeaways. I think 1 time spent hunting is
- 1:05:56going to be 1 of probably the predictors of success there.
- 1:06:00But I think just time spent I probably miles in the woods.
- 1:06:04Miles walked in the woods is probably going to be the number
- 1:06:07one predictor of success. I think sometimes I get carried
- 1:06:11away with too much just like always being in the stand, like
- 1:06:14feeling like I'm hunting when I should just be like take a day.
- 1:06:18Instead of going hunting tonight, I'm just going to walk
- 1:06:205 miles in this piece of woods and find the freshest, best
- 1:06:24sign. And if I never set up and have a
- 1:06:26set for the night, that's fine. And you're just going to collect
- 1:06:30more data that way. Because I think this year I did
- 1:06:34less scouting that I had in the past during the summer, which I
- 1:06:37think is fine. But I think in season scouting
- 1:06:39is super important. Finding out where the deer are
- 1:06:42right now is very important. And I think I haven't been doing
- 1:06:45as much of that and I've just been in the stand too much and
- 1:06:49I've been setting up on Stein. So it's not like, I don't know,
- 1:06:53it's not like I'm just hunting in in bad places.
- 1:06:55But I've been moving around a lot still like I normally do,
- 1:06:59but just hasn't worked out. So I think 1 take away is just
- 1:07:01like more boots in the ground, less time in the stand,
- 1:07:05especially in September and October before the rut kicks in
- 1:07:08in November. So that's my take away there.
- 1:07:11The other thing is I think you look at people online,
- 1:07:15Youtubers, big hunters, everyone once in awhile has tough
- 1:07:20seasons. I think there's a lot of luck in
- 1:07:23hunting and I think there's maybe a lot less than people
- 1:07:27think. But there is always still going
- 1:07:29to be a luck component. And sometimes it's just things
- 1:07:32don't work out like I've been seeing to you this year.
- 1:07:34But I just haven't been able to connect as much in the as I have
- 1:07:37in the past. And I think just don't get
- 1:07:39discouraged. Everyday I'm out there, I'm
- 1:07:41collecting more data. In a certain sense, most of the
- 1:07:45data collected this recently has been this spot stinks.
- 1:07:48But yeah, just keep keep the spirits up.
- 1:07:51And I'm still excited for NN is like the best season.
- 1:07:55Gun season opens up in a couple weeks and the rot kicks in.
- 1:07:59So more deer moving around. So yeah, my, my, my spirits are
- 1:08:06high. But I do think this has not been
- 1:08:09a super successful deer season thus far.
- 1:08:12So yeah, I think more, more boots in the ground.
- 1:08:15I think this year I haven't been hunting.
- 1:08:19I usually don't hunt mornings because mornings take a lot out
- 1:08:22of you. Like if you're waking up super
- 1:08:23early, that can kind of throw off your whole schedule.
- 1:08:25And obviously I always prioritize running and training.
- 1:08:28So I've been doing a lot of mornings and it was warmer
- 1:08:31earlier in the year and I feel like deer been moving around
- 1:08:33more in the mornings anyway. So that could be one thing, like
- 1:08:37I'm just neglecting getting getting up early, which is kind
- 1:08:40of on me. And then the third thing, I
- 1:08:42think this year has been super dry.
- 1:08:44So everyone knows it's been a really big drought, but I think
- 1:08:48it's it's had a lot of impact. There's been a lot of places
- 1:08:51that are not dropping acorns at all.
- 1:08:53And the deer just out of are just nowhere to be found.
- 1:08:58And I think earlier in the year, I was focusing on like always
- 1:09:01being near water. I think especially during the
- 1:09:03drought and even if there's not a drought, like you need to be
- 1:09:06near some sort of water source. Deer drink in bed near water
- 1:09:10every day. But also I think it changes what
- 1:09:14they want to eat. Like I think I was talking to a
- 1:09:15local farmer the other day and she was saying that the deer
- 1:09:19have been hammering her vegetables, her pumpkins, all
- 1:09:22all these different vegetables because it has so much water in
- 1:09:24it, because it's been so dry everywhere.
- 1:09:27So I don't know if, you know, the acorn crop has been
- 1:09:31different. There's probably different
- 1:09:32plants that are produce that the deer are feeding on that has
- 1:09:36been different than in the past. And I've kind of been going to
- 1:09:38some of the spots that I know have been good in the past that
- 1:09:39maybe aren't as good at this year specifically because it's
- 1:09:42been so dry. So I think the big takeaways
- 1:09:45from this year are more boots on the ground in general.
- 1:09:49Don't be afraid to go scout more than you're sitting in your
- 1:09:53stand. I think that I think Miles
- 1:09:57walked in the woods is going to be probably the number one
- 1:09:59indicator of success, in my opinion.
- 1:10:03Two, don't get if you got spots that are good in the past,
- 1:10:07doesn't mean they're going to be good this year.
- 1:10:09Don't be rigid, be flexible and be current on being where the
- 1:10:16deer are. That's all I'll say there.
- 1:10:20Yeah, don't don't be hard set on, oh, this spot was good.
- 1:10:24This has been good in the past. I'm going to go there and just
- 1:10:26sit there. Make sure you're finding where
- 1:10:28the deer are this year in time and then don't get discouraged.
- 1:10:32I just do a double finger down. Don't get discouraged because
- 1:10:36sometimes it's just hard for things to line up perfectly,
- 1:10:39especially with a bow. With a bow, it's super hard to
- 1:10:41get like I've been seeing a bunch of deer, but with a bow
- 1:10:45you have to get a lot closer, clear shots, all that stuff.
- 1:10:47So it's harder. So keep the hopes up, keep
- 1:10:50hunting. I don't think it, you know, this
- 1:10:52tough season hasn't changed how much I would have haunted, but
- 1:10:55it's been tough. The last few sits have been like
- 1:10:59I need to start seeing deer because this is getting brutal.
- 1:11:02The beginning of the year. I've seen a lot of deer with the
- 1:11:03last couple weeks have been brutal.
- 1:11:04But the October low, that's all right.
- 1:11:08November's almost here. I'm excited.
- 1:11:11And that was the deer season update.
- 1:11:14So that's that's all I got for today.
- 1:11:19Our town almost I think is a good length.
- 1:11:21So yeah, hopefully you guys enjoy the episode.
- 1:11:25Thanks to everyone who's been watching, commenting, liking all
- 1:11:30that stuff has been, has been super, super awesome to see and
- 1:11:34I'm I'm glad that people are enjoying it.
- 1:11:35I'm going to keep doing it. Like I always say, I'm going to
- 1:11:37try to keep getting better, better audio, better, all this
- 1:11:41stuff just, you know, better, better videos.
- 1:11:45Just try to improve, try to improve.
- 1:11:47I feel like talking is is a little bit of like an art.
- 1:11:51Yeah, maybe an art and you got to get better on it.
- 1:11:54And I definitely know that I'm not the best that may be
- 1:11:57explaining things sometimes. So I'm going to just try to keep
- 1:11:59improving on making sure that I'm bringing the stories and the
- 1:12:04values to you guys in a clear and concise way.
- 1:12:09Dropping the Umm's and the likes.
- 1:12:10I know that was one thing I was like maybe I shouldn't just say
- 1:12:13been doing a lot of Umm's and likes.
- 1:12:15We're going to try to improve on that each podcast, so.
