- 0:00This one's for anyone who's ever told someone, I'm good, while quietly
- 0:04googling burnout symptoms at 2AM. Burnout doesn't always
- 0:07look like a breakdown, sometimes it looks like crying in a Costco
- 0:11parking lot because they're at a rotisserie chicken and that was your
- 0:15one win for the day. You sign the volunteer form. By week three,
- 0:18you're running the entire Sunday team you weren't even part of and hiding
- 0:22behind a potted plant to avoid being asked again. Welcome to Messy Advice
- 0:26for People Who Care, a summer series from Journey with Care for people
- 0:30who care deeply, try their best, and sometimes wonder if
- 0:33burnout is just their personality now. We're talking about
- 0:37caregiving, boundaries, burnout, and the not so clear moments of loving
- 0:41others well, minus the formulas. This is Johan on
- 0:44the edge of helpful, slightly crispy around the edges, but
- 0:48still showing up. Sometimes the
- 0:52hardest thing to admit is that we've hit a wall, especially when
- 0:55people count on us to keep showing up. Today's question gets
- 0:59into that exact tension. I used to be someone
- 1:03people can count on, but lately, I just don't
- 1:07have it in me. Am I failing if I pull back?
- 1:11That's not just a fair question. It's one I think more people are
- 1:15quietly carrying than we realize. It hits on that deep
- 1:19unspoken fear. What if I'm not okay and people still need me to
- 1:22be? According to a 2022 Indeed Canada
- 1:26report, 53 of Canadian workers said they were burned
- 1:30out, up from forty percent just two years earlier.
- 1:34So if you're feeling emotionally spent, you're not dramatic.
- 1:38You're trending, which is probably the least comforting way of saying
- 1:42you're not alone. But stats don't tell you what it feels like at
- 1:4506:30AM, checking your messages with a pit in your stomach
- 1:49and nothing left in the tank. Let's talk about that.
- 1:53Now I love the heart behind showing up, but
- 1:57somewhere along the line, we turned it into a competitive sport, and the
- 2:00gold medal goes whoever cancels rest the fastest in the name of being
- 2:04available. Imagine this. You're two hours into your
- 2:08workday, three tabs deep into unread emails, and someone texts,
- 2:12hey. Can you help me out with something small? You're exhausted.
- 2:17But you type, sure. I'm happy to help because the
- 2:21guilt hits faster than the boundary. And suddenly, you're in full
- 2:25triage mode, overfunctioning like your spiritual worth depends on
- 2:28it. Not because you want to, but because saying no
- 2:32feels like a betrayal. Consider this. Let's
- 2:35get biblical. Biblical. In first
- 2:39Kings 19, Elijah has just come off a massive spiritual
- 2:43wind. Fire from heaven, the prophets of Baal
- 2:46exposed, people falling on their knees in worship.
- 2:50By all accounts, it's a career defining moment for a prophet.
- 2:54And then he crashes, and he crashes
- 2:58hard. He runs into the wilderness, lies down under a
- 3:01bush, and basically tells God, I've had enough.
- 3:05I'm done. He's not dramatic. He's depleted.
- 3:09And what does God do? Not a lecture. Not a
- 3:13motivational speech. No. Let's talk about your lack
- 3:16in faith. Instead, God sends an angel,
- 3:20and God sends an angel of snacks. And he says,
- 3:24get up and eat. And then Elijah falls asleep again,
- 3:28so the angel comes back with more food. It's like divine
- 3:32DoorDash with a side of try again later. God
- 3:36doesn't rush Elijah. He doesn't push him past his limits.
- 3:40He gives him space, silence, rest,
- 3:44and then, only then, he whispers. Not in fire,
- 3:48not in wind, not in earthquakes, but in
- 3:51stillness. This isn't just about burnout. It's about how
- 3:55god responds to our breaking point with care,
- 3:58with gentleness, with a kind of kindness that doesn't require
- 4:02us to prove we're still useful. Sometimes the most
- 4:06spiritual thing you can do is take a nap and eat something
- 4:10warm. So maybe the most faithful thing you could do this
- 4:13week is nap. Not out of laziness, but a way
- 4:17of saying, I trust that everything doesn't depend on me.
- 4:21Burnout doesn't mean that you've failed. It means that you've been carrying more than you
- 4:25were meant to. Maybe it's time to set something down, not
- 4:28everything, just something. Start there. And, hey,
- 4:32if that landed somewhere in your chest, you're not alone. A lot of us are
- 4:36trying to serve from empty wells and we don't have to.

- 4:51burnout symptoms or how to fake a sabbatical, take
- 4:54that as your sign not to fake it, actually rest,
- 4:58and always remember to stay curious.
