- 1:18Speaker 1: My next guest is here, boy, this is what I'll
- 1:21Speaker 1: tell you. So I got this guy got this carcase.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Somebody messaged me through LinkedIn and said, getting next guests
- 1:27Speaker 1: in town? Could he do the show? I think I
- 1:30Speaker 1: immediately put myself number in there. They know who she
- 1:33Speaker 1: will all I know, I gotta get close to my
- 1:35Speaker 1: board my next guest. Production company Who's laughing now has
- 1:39Speaker 1: been producing hit drama das for the past twenty five years.
- 1:43Speaker 1: To date, he and his family have launched more than
- 1:46Speaker 1: twenty productions delivering to soldot theaters across the country, in
- 1:51Speaker 1: addition to TV shows on GMC, Aspire, u MC BT
- 1:56Speaker 1: and Bravo. Please work with the Money, Money Making Conversation
- 2:00Speaker 1: j D lrds. Right, All right, well seven, yeah, Well,
- 2:11Speaker 1: actually I surpassed the Guinness Book of World Records. Um.
- 2:14Speaker 1: I went for the Guinness Book of World Records and
- 2:17Speaker 1: we had a issue with it because I beat the
- 2:21Speaker 1: record and I didn't know at the end of it,
- 2:23Speaker 1: they wanted ten thousand dollars. Yeah, they wanted ten thousand dollars,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and I was like ten thousand dollars. I said, well,
- 2:29Speaker 1: hold on, and then nobody told me that I didn't
- 2:31Speaker 1: see that in the contract, right, So they want a
- 2:34Speaker 1: ten thousand dollars to actually give me the actual a award.
- 2:38Speaker 1: So I said, okay, well, you know, no problem. We
- 2:40Speaker 1: wrote them the check. Then they told me I would
- 2:43Speaker 1: only have it for one day because it was a
- 2:45Speaker 1: guy in Germany that because at that time I only
- 2:47Speaker 1: played fifty six and I beat the fifty two characters.
- 2:50Speaker 1: So I played fifty six, but they said that I
- 2:52Speaker 1: would only have it for a day because it was
- 2:53Speaker 1: a guy in Germany that was doing sixty. I said, well,
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'm not giving you ten thousand dollars for a day.
- 2:58Speaker 1: That's not gonna happen. So then we waited a year
- 3:01Speaker 1: and I came back because I wanted to challenge it,
- 3:04Speaker 1: and also we got our money back, and I went
- 3:07Speaker 1: and I beat the sixty characters and I did seventy two.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Then they want a twenty thousand. Oh, they just keep
- 3:13Speaker 1: going up, they want Yeah, so my pr person said, well,
- 3:17Speaker 1: listen to all we gotta do is just said you
- 3:20Speaker 1: surpassed it. And if they want to challenge it, you
- 3:22Speaker 1: know we have it on you know film. Well, you
- 3:24Speaker 1: know a lot of people don't know that when you
- 3:26Speaker 1: get those stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, there's
- 3:28Speaker 1: a fee for that about thirty thousand dollars. So you said,
- 3:32Speaker 1: why what you call him? It's not because they don't
- 3:35Speaker 1: want to pay that thirty thousand, Well ten thousand more.
- 3:37Speaker 1: I could have just got me a star. Absolutely, And
- 3:41Speaker 1: how you've been doing my friend a long time back history. Yeah,
- 3:44Speaker 1: we came together up in New York when I Steve
- 3:47Speaker 1: and I went to WBLS and New York City in
- 3:49Speaker 1: two thousand and five, and uh, and we just started connecting.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Just what let me say this back then, if nobody
- 3:57Speaker 1: don't know, I had asked um you to manage me,
- 4:02Speaker 1: and you said to me, what are you doing for
- 4:06Speaker 1: yourself that I can't do? And I sat there and
- 4:10Speaker 1: I had to think about it for men, asked, well
- 4:12Speaker 1: what am I doing for myself? And you said, brother,
- 4:15Speaker 1: he said, do it for yourself first, and then when
- 4:18Speaker 1: you get to what you gotta get to then come
- 4:19Speaker 1: back and say all right, I can't go no further.
- 4:22Speaker 1: But at that point I think I was lazy and
- 4:24Speaker 1: I didn't do it, and I and I'm gonna tell
- 4:26Speaker 1: you I left that meeting mad I was tight. I
- 4:31Speaker 1: was like yeah, McDonald said, I gotta do it myself.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And then my wife said, what what are you doing
- 4:38Speaker 1: for yourself? Like what? And then I literally motivated myself
- 4:41Speaker 1: to do something for myself because I didn't stop talking
- 4:43Speaker 1: to you. No, no, no, you answer my calls and
- 4:45Speaker 1: every day absolutely what are you doing? That said nothing?
- 4:48Speaker 1: You know what You're like play what about this? With Sean?
- 4:51Speaker 1: You said, hey, watch this video and things like that.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I just start seeing you moving forward. But there was
- 4:56Speaker 1: no denying your talent. It was like okay, because what
- 4:59Speaker 1: happens says a lot of people in Hollywood. They get
- 5:01Speaker 1: an agent, they get a manager, and sometimes didn't just stop.
- 5:04Speaker 1: They think something magical is going to happen. But what
- 5:07Speaker 1: people don't realize that is that managers and ages are
- 5:11Speaker 1: really just helping a talent to the next level because
- 5:13Speaker 1: of their because of their actions, because of their acauass.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Of example, Stephen A. Smith Steve is A is a
- 5:19Speaker 1: social media phenomenon he brings in management to connect him
- 5:22Speaker 1: to the right people or agent to connect in the
- 5:24Speaker 1: right people, and that organization can lead to a better
- 5:28Speaker 1: financial situation. But believe me, I didn't make a Stephen
- 5:30Speaker 1: A Smith. I didn't make a Steve Harvey. I just
- 5:33Speaker 1: positioned him based on the foundation that he gave me.
- 5:36Speaker 1: He had the foundation. But Steve was always at the
- 5:38Speaker 1: ready to go on the road, ready to tell a joke.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And that's all I was asking him, What are you
- 5:42Speaker 1: doing for yourself to build your brand, to work your brand?
- 5:46Speaker 1: And the evolution of all these different characters came along.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Now you know, you're big and drama. Just to explain
- 5:52Speaker 1: to everybody on the show, what exactly is a drama
- 5:55Speaker 1: A drama Ney is Uh my interpretation of it is
- 5:59Speaker 1: mixing drumah with the comedy side and bringing them both because, um,
- 6:06Speaker 1: I want people, you know, I always want people to laugh,
- 6:10Speaker 1: but I want to feed them a message at the
- 6:12Speaker 1: same time. So that's the drama side of it is,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, giving them an important message, you know that's serious,
- 6:18Speaker 1: but making it you know, it's almost like you know, uh,
- 6:23Speaker 1: you know feeding people ice cream, you know, feeding them
- 6:25Speaker 1: their medicine. But you got some ice cream. Absolutely, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 1: but it's just it's just, you know, you have to
- 6:34Speaker 1: be talented to be to pull that off because usually
- 6:36Speaker 1: in a scene is so dark that that you you
- 6:38Speaker 1: make that the right turn and people go with you
- 6:42Speaker 1: and and things like that. So now when I'm reading
- 6:44Speaker 1: your bio j D. It's talks about family. Who in
- 6:46Speaker 1: your family as part of the production. Everybody, everybody works
- 6:50Speaker 1: that everybody, anybody that's eating my house is working, because
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think it's important. You know, as a family, you're
- 6:59Speaker 1: a lot of wronger and you want to keep family
- 7:01Speaker 1: around you when you're in this business. Because David and
- 7:04Speaker 1: Tamila man do that. Yes, everybody in that how they
- 7:07Speaker 1: can't speak, get up out of bed. Everybody gonna work.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I got my wife handles the money side of that.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I don't have my kids count my money. I just
- 7:17Speaker 1: let my wife count my money. But I got a
- 7:20Speaker 1: son who's into um. He actually just graduated from cooking school.
- 7:27Speaker 1: So I did and one thing that I did wrong
- 7:29Speaker 1: about that, I totally look better than my wife. So
- 7:33Speaker 1: she hasn't cooked since. But he's into you know, music
- 7:37Speaker 1: as well, so he so he scores a lot of
- 7:39Speaker 1: the music, you know, for the show. And then I
- 7:42Speaker 1: have my two daughters. They handled the business side on screen,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you know, so when we did the reality show Bravo,
- 7:50Speaker 1: they actually came on screen and do it. Let let's
- 7:53Speaker 1: talk about something that's really important. Your your your successful
- 7:57Speaker 1: actor and prominent stuttering. Okay, okay, So that's that's something
- 8:02Speaker 1: that's been part of your life. And and and when
- 8:05Speaker 1: you go out to character, is not there, No, not
- 8:08Speaker 1: not at all, you know. And it's weird because um,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I spoke to Samuel Jackson about this. He came to
- 8:13Speaker 1: New York City one time, him, Bruce Willis, um Emily
- 8:18Speaker 1: um Blunt, and I remember having a conversation with sam
- 8:22Speaker 1: about it and he's like, you know, you have to
- 8:25Speaker 1: put a character in front of that voice, you know,
- 8:28Speaker 1: because I didn't know that he had a speech. I started, Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 1: And I spoke to um, I'm Steve about that. I
- 8:36Speaker 1: remember one time, Um was it dog? What you? What
- 8:40Speaker 1: are you stuttering about? Dog? Spick up man? You know.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But I've you know, um um getting on stage, Like
- 8:50Speaker 1: when I go into the character, you know, any character
- 8:52Speaker 1: that I decided to go into the character just completely
- 8:55Speaker 1: throws out and this character does not start at all,
- 8:57Speaker 1: you know. But I can't walk around life talking like that.
- 9:01Speaker 1: You probably just look at you a little different. Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and I did the school's working with But when you
- 9:07Speaker 1: when you talking about because you did sending the two characters. Yeah, okay, yes,
- 9:11Speaker 1: let's break down that process because I don't know sending
- 9:15Speaker 1: it to anybody like that. Okay, So in the name
- 9:19Speaker 1: of the players, what it's called schizophren schizophrenia And right
- 9:23Speaker 1: now it's been on tour right well, we've been doing
- 9:26Speaker 1: some spot dates. We actually head out on the national
- 9:28Speaker 1: tour with a l W that's La Dallas Awesome. It
- 9:36Speaker 1: was a J D numb Are you going to do
- 9:40Speaker 1: these seventy two people? I washed one of the big time.
- 9:46Speaker 1: We can go back when he really was a dominant force,
- 9:48Speaker 1: took took many many stars out on the road. Kurt
- 9:51Speaker 1: Franklin tour on the road, so he was always out there.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Now you have I think you're carrious. And then Tyler Perry, yes,
- 10:00Speaker 1: you know, uh who just took it to the next
- 10:02Speaker 1: long Oh yeah, you know. And I have so much
- 10:05Speaker 1: respect for Tyler because he built a brand out of nowhere,
- 10:11Speaker 1: you know, and and really made it something let's talk
- 10:14Speaker 1: about something that's really important. Your your your successful actor
- 10:18Speaker 1: and prominent stuttering. Okay, okay, so that's that's something that's
- 10:23Speaker 1: been part of your life. And and and when you
- 10:26Speaker 1: go into character, it's not there. No, not, not not
- 10:29Speaker 1: at all, you know. And it's weird because Um, I
- 10:31Speaker 1: spoke to Samuel Jackson about this. He came to New
- 10:34Speaker 1: York City one time, him, Bruce Willis, Um Emily um Blunt,
- 10:41Speaker 1: and I remember having a conversation with sam about it,
- 10:43Speaker 1: and he's like, you know, you have to put a
- 10:46Speaker 1: character in front of that voice, you know, because I
- 10:49Speaker 1: didn't know that he had a speech and started, Yeah,
- 10:54Speaker 1: And I spoke to um, I'm Steve about that. I
- 10:56Speaker 1: remember one time, Um, was it dog cute? What are
- 11:00Speaker 1: you stuttering about? This big up man? You know? But
- 11:06Speaker 1: I've you know, um um getting on stage, Like when
- 11:10Speaker 1: I go into the characters, you know, any character that
- 11:13Speaker 1: I decided to go into the counter just completely flows
- 11:15Speaker 1: out and this character does not start at all, you know.
- 11:18Speaker 1: But I can't walk around life talking like that. You
- 11:21Speaker 1: probably we should look at you a little different. Yeah,
- 11:23Speaker 1: And I did it in school. What's working with But
- 11:27Speaker 1: when you when you talking about because you did send
- 11:29Speaker 1: the too characters. Yeah, okay, yes, let's break down that
- 11:32Speaker 1: process because I don't know send it to anybody like that. Okay,
- 11:37Speaker 1: So in the name of the players, what it's called
- 11:40Speaker 1: schizophren schizophrenia And right now it's been on tour right well,
- 11:45Speaker 1: we've been doing some spot dates. We actually head out
- 11:48Speaker 1: on a national tour with a l W that's l
- 11:52Speaker 1: uhhh yeah awesome. Yea, it was a J D numb
- 12:00Speaker 1: Are you gonna do these seventy two people? Washed? Wasn't
- 12:05Speaker 1: the big time? We can go back when he really
- 12:07Speaker 1: was a dominant force, took took many many stars out
- 12:10Speaker 1: on the road. Kurt Franklin tour on the road, so
- 12:13Speaker 1: he was always out there. Now you have I think Carrios,
- 12:16Speaker 1: uh and then Tyler Perry you know, uh who just
- 12:22Speaker 1: took it to the next long oh yeah, you know.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And I have so much respect for Tyler because he
- 12:27Speaker 1: built a brand out of nowhere, you know, and and
- 12:32Speaker 1: really made it something. I remember we're about to go
- 12:35Speaker 1: in this break, but I remember we was we was
- 12:37Speaker 1: doing radio and Los Angeles and Shama Moore he called
- 12:41Speaker 1: me said, chamre has to do series on CPS. Just
- 12:45Speaker 1: doing very well. Uh, he said, you gotta come to
- 12:49Speaker 1: he was playing at the Kodak Theater because you knew
- 12:52Speaker 1: there was a big difference for his type of show
- 12:54Speaker 1: to be in the Kodak Theater and Kodak Theater way
- 12:56Speaker 1: they do the Oscars and all the major awards in Hollywood.
- 13:00Speaker 1: He said, you gotta come see this guy. And he had.
- 13:02Speaker 1: He hadn't done the movies yet, none of them, dear
- 13:04Speaker 1: movies had hit it. But he was already just breaking
- 13:07Speaker 1: ground and going to the next level with his brand
- 13:10Speaker 1: and understanding ownership of his brand. You understood that he
- 13:14Speaker 1: didn't give away rights and stuff like that because he
- 13:16Speaker 1: knew his brand meant something. And that's really the key
- 13:19Speaker 1: with him. And when we were talking about business, you
- 13:22Speaker 1: always have to have your mind at the at the
- 13:24Speaker 1: at the top of the game that comes to business,
- 13:26Speaker 1: cause people are on your brand. You can walk away.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna talk about somebody who kind of lost his
- 13:30Speaker 1: brand and come right back from this break on. I'm
- 13:33Speaker 1: only I'm here, y'all. Money Making Conversations, old friend, Uh,
- 13:36Speaker 1: many characters. J D. Lawrence, Wow, it's great. Say hi,
- 13:45Speaker 1: this is Rushan McDonald, the host of Money Making conversation.

- 13:52Speaker 1: to money Making Conversations, Loni Love. You have to believe
- 13:55Speaker 1: in yourself. Nobody else believes, and you believe in yourself

- 14:03Speaker 1: seventy thousand people to introduce Michelle Obama. That just doesn't
- 14:08Speaker 1: come overnight. Please, Welcome to money Making Conversations. Lynn, your
- 14:13Speaker 1: daughter Charity is a hot mess on Green Lease. Well,

- 14:28Speaker 1: things help take care of her a lot of times.
- 14:32Speaker 1: The baby and the family is like that. Money Making

- 14:47Speaker 1: Welcome to money Making Conversation. I'm your host with Sean McDonalds.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Each money Making Conversations talk show us about entrepreneurship and entertainment.
- 14:54Speaker 1: I provide the consumer and business owner access to celebrities, CEOs, entrepreneurs,
- 14:58Speaker 1: and industry decision makers. It is important to understand that
- 15:02Speaker 1: everybody travels a different path to success. That's because your
- 15:05Speaker 1: brand is different. The challenges you face in your life
- 15:08Speaker 1: are different. So stop reading other people's success stories and
- 15:11Speaker 1: start writing your own. Now, you can be motivated by
- 15:14Speaker 1: their success because their stories can offer direction and help
- 15:17Speaker 1: you reach your goals through your planning and your committed effort.
- 15:20Speaker 1: My guests on money making Conversations have that same passion,
- 15:24Speaker 1: and they share that information when we talk about their
- 15:26Speaker 1: career motivation, what they are promoting, how they live a
- 15:30Speaker 1: balanced life, and their secrets to success. It's really important
- 15:33Speaker 1: to understand that this shows about you for you, and
- 15:37Speaker 1: my guests are here to help you. My next guest
- 15:40Speaker 1: is world renowned. Last year, the Mayor of New York
- 15:43Speaker 1: City and first Lady awarded the Brooklyn Navy with her
- 15:46Speaker 1: own day in New York City. She's co host of
- 15:49Speaker 1: The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club has transcended hip hop
- 15:52Speaker 1: and pop culture become a popular style for both rising
- 15:55Speaker 1: and established politician, community activists, and business leaders. The Breakfast
- 16:00Speaker 1: Club guest lets have ranged from Hillary Clinton to Jennifer Lopez,
- 16:03Speaker 1: to Dave Chappelle to stephen A Smith and everyone in between.
- 16:07Speaker 1: In her spare time, now she has her book club
- 16:10Speaker 1: called Angela Ye's Book Club, her Running Club Run with Yee,
- 16:15Speaker 1: and her Wealth Wednesdays series with f natural expert Stacy Tisdale. Finally,
- 16:21Speaker 1: please welcome to Money Making Conversations, Angela. Ye, me sound
- 16:27Speaker 1: really amazing. Well, you're amazing. Well, you know, the thing
- 16:31Speaker 1: about it, the Angela is that you know you you
- 16:34Speaker 1: you're you're in the in the era of social media
- 16:37Speaker 1: and branding and and you know, women dominate radio listenership.
- 16:42Speaker 1: You know, if you ever show, unless you're doing sports,
- 16:45Speaker 1: that's where men dominate listenership on sports. Hand and I
- 16:49Speaker 1: produced so many fantastic morning shows, and I know the
- 16:53Speaker 1: value of a female and they're positioned it. On the
- 16:56Speaker 1: show you're on, there were two very dominant men. What
- 16:58Speaker 1: do you feel your role us on the Breakfast Club?
- 17:02Speaker 1: I think, uh, and we are very clear about what
- 17:04Speaker 1: our roles are. But for myself, I would say that
- 17:07Speaker 1: my role is the person that brings the facts and
- 17:10Speaker 1: the one that gets there earlier than everybody does the research,
- 17:13Speaker 1: presents the stories and that's probably the most prep from
- 17:17Speaker 1: when we have interviews. I'm also the one that bring
- 17:21Speaker 1: the bag in when things get off track. So people, yeah,
- 17:25Speaker 1: as the person that the same one, well, you know, so,
- 17:31Speaker 1: but you know, that's really funny because you know, when
- 17:34Speaker 1: I look at Live Service, you're kind of not saying
- 17:37Speaker 1: on that show. You know. You know what's funny is
- 17:41Speaker 1: I still am kind of like the Barbara Walters on
- 17:43Speaker 1: Live Service because my experiences are nowhere near as crazy
- 17:48Speaker 1: as the lady's experiences on there. I'm probably uh the
- 17:52Speaker 1: one that is the most say that all the time,
- 17:56Speaker 1: and people also say, well, Angela doesn't tell us her
- 17:59Speaker 1: experiences life, and I always look at it like when
- 18:01Speaker 1: I'm here every single thank you guys knowing me from
- 18:04Speaker 1: the breakfast club. I'm trying to learn more about other people.
- 18:06Speaker 1: But I still feeling like I have always been somewhat
- 18:10Speaker 1: conservative when it comes to a mon and sex life.
- 18:13Speaker 1: So if I want to be honest, everybody is not
- 18:15Speaker 1: a freak. A lot of people are conservative also. Absolutely
- 18:19Speaker 1: to learn about new things absolutely, you know, and that's
- 18:21Speaker 1: why you know it's called fantasy. You know, you have
- 18:24Speaker 1: a fantasy and you can't have a reality. And so
- 18:26Speaker 1: when i'm you know, I try to reach out and
- 18:29Speaker 1: you know, when guests come on my show, and especially
- 18:31Speaker 1: unique guests because you all unique guests, because we know
- 18:34Speaker 1: I don't I don't mention that that's that amount of
- 18:37Speaker 1: all activity of book club or you know you're obviously
- 18:40Speaker 1: in shape you running, you know, or I'm sure if
- 18:43Speaker 1: you run in front of me, I'm not gonna catch you,
- 18:45Speaker 1: you know, especially I keep up with you for a
- 18:49Speaker 1: New York block after that, we all got something. I
- 18:52Speaker 1: bet you if you started running. That's a little bit
- 18:54Speaker 1: like every few days, like I ran with people that
- 19:00Speaker 1: their life who have asked everything. And I've seen people
- 19:04Speaker 1: like that. One of my really good friends from college,
- 19:06Speaker 1: Nay was marathon. Before that he had asked, I never
- 19:09Speaker 1: ran a day in her life the Crown. That's amazing.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And you no, no, because let's let's like, I can't
- 19:15Speaker 1: go to detail because I'm on free Radio to rest
- 19:17Speaker 1: your radio with your lift service show. But you know
- 19:20Speaker 1: you got on there. I see Stephanie and Loreale on
- 19:23Speaker 1: the show. Now are they are? Is that your team? Uh?
- 19:28Speaker 1: How does that? How does the makeup? And then you
- 19:29Speaker 1: have to guess, you know, you know, they come on
- 19:32Speaker 1: the show and you're they're teasers. You're you're trying to
- 19:34Speaker 1: pull out the nuggets of sometimes shock or information, like
- 19:38Speaker 1: you said, you know, I saw you know Chelsea Handler
- 19:41Speaker 1: episode and now so when you were on that episode,
- 19:44Speaker 1: you admitted, I'm not trying to be open. That's that's
- 19:47Speaker 1: never been my goal. You know what I loved about it,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and I always tell people in my intro is about
- 19:52Speaker 1: you know, you're out there writing your own story and
- 19:55Speaker 1: that's what impresses me. And it's just just tell people
- 19:57Speaker 1: why that's important that Angela else who story first. Well,
- 20:02Speaker 1: I think we all very diverse human being. Sometimes people
- 20:04Speaker 1: think we're so monolithic as black women. They think if
- 20:07Speaker 1: you're a journalist that automatically you went to be Oprah.
- 20:10Speaker 1: We all respect Oprah of course, like there's no denying
- 20:14Speaker 1: what she did and what she's created is amazing, her
- 20:17Speaker 1: whole empire, but that doesn't mean that's who I'm modeling
- 20:19Speaker 1: myself after. And there's nothing wrong with that. I think
- 20:22Speaker 1: that people think, oh, you're gonna be the next Open,
- 20:25Speaker 1: and that's not always what it is like for myself.
- 20:27Speaker 1: I could never be the next Oprah because that's just
- 20:29Speaker 1: not the lane that I'm in. I've never been. Uh,
- 20:33Speaker 1: I've never done interviews like she has like I do
- 20:35Speaker 1: sometimes to have ageory emails. I come from serious satellite
- 20:38Speaker 1: radio and as you know, it was very unsensored. I
- 20:41Speaker 1: was on a hip hop station that was very dominated
- 20:45Speaker 1: that it was like eight percent males that listen. To
- 20:51Speaker 1: keep it real, like that's how I started doing radio.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I've always been like when I started, I was the
- 20:56Speaker 1: only woman on the station, you know, on Shave forty five.
- 20:59Speaker 1: So for myself that I could even see myself being
- 21:03Speaker 1: and that's coming from this whole hip hop that's not open.
- 21:06Speaker 1: You know. Well I would tell you this, Uh, you know,
- 21:08Speaker 1: I have a gift. You know, I see talent and
- 21:11Speaker 1: I recognize where they're gonna go. You know, this is
- 21:14Speaker 1: just you know, like I said, one thing I know
- 21:16Speaker 1: this is about you is that you're you know, you're
- 21:18Speaker 1: a person who reinvents her sound. You know, you know,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and and then you understand multiple strings of income what
- 21:24Speaker 1: I just mentioned. And so so what you're doing now
- 21:27Speaker 1: is just a version of what you're doing now. And
- 21:30Speaker 1: as you mature, you know, your values change, and you know,
- 21:32Speaker 1: I don't know what the next ten years, but it's
- 21:35Speaker 1: gonna be a different Angela Yee in ten years, because
- 21:38Speaker 1: that's just you. You know, you you have a clear understanding,
- 21:40Speaker 1: Like you already admit certain things. I'm conservative Rashan. You know,
- 21:44Speaker 1: conservative things start taking over and they start directing you
- 21:47Speaker 1: where you want to go with your brain. And this
- 21:48Speaker 1: is what this is all about, your brain, you know,
- 21:51Speaker 1: because you carry I always tell people, you know, you
- 21:52Speaker 1: care a certain group of people you with you for
- 21:54Speaker 1: twenty years and they have value for twenty years. That's
- 21:57Speaker 1: who you go out and tell advertising. I'm eighteen to
- 22:00Speaker 1: thirty four. I'm eighteen to four to nine. That's that's
- 22:03Speaker 1: the number they want, twenty five four the night. So
- 22:05Speaker 1: you carry those folks for twenty years, you know, you
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know, along the way, you reinvent yourself to hang
- 22:09Speaker 1: on to them and also sometimes to be relevant to
- 22:12Speaker 1: a younger group so you can care them with you.
- 22:14Speaker 1: And so when I look at your brands, you know
- 22:16Speaker 1: and you know actually real estate investor. And then are
- 22:20Speaker 1: you a homeowner? Yes? So I do have right now
- 22:25Speaker 1: for residences. Well that's a that's that's like a that's
- 22:30Speaker 1: I said a homeowner or not? You said four residencis
- 22:33Speaker 1: are you just out right my house in Brooklyn that
- 22:39Speaker 1: I live in out right? Because I just paid off
- 22:41Speaker 1: the mortgage that was my birgagations. So what's it? What's it?
- 22:47Speaker 1: The thirty year mortgage or fifteen year mortgage that you're
- 22:49Speaker 1: paid on. It started off as a thirty year. Then
- 22:52Speaker 1: I refinanced it um two years ago to make it
- 22:54Speaker 1: a fifteen years just to get a lower rate. And
- 22:57Speaker 1: ye know when I did that, because the rates had dropped,
- 23:00Speaker 1: that also meant that I wasn't even paying much more
- 23:03Speaker 1: than I was paying already just to make it a
- 23:05Speaker 1: fifteen year instead of a thirty year because of the
- 23:07Speaker 1: rate drop. And then I had made a promise to
- 23:09Speaker 1: myself there by my birthday, I want to pay off
- 23:11Speaker 1: my mortgage that I did it. We know, something's really
- 23:14Speaker 1: interesting because that gets to your your were wealth winds
- 23:18Speaker 1: that believe that's right, Uh that you do. We are
- 23:20Speaker 1: winds as we do with uh Stacy Tisdale because people
- 23:23Speaker 1: need to understand that because I did the same thing
- 23:26Speaker 1: with Mike. You know, I have two homes. I paid
- 23:27Speaker 1: all both from once in Houston, was in Atlanta. In
- 23:29Speaker 1: the first home, I had a thirty year mortgage and
- 23:32Speaker 1: then uh, and so when you go to fifteen, it's
- 23:35Speaker 1: really not that big of a difference, right, Yeah, you're right.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Especially it's really the percentage to you know, what your
- 23:41Speaker 1: interest is so once that instant dropped a point, and
- 23:45Speaker 1: you'll be surprised how much I can shave off. And
- 23:48Speaker 1: you're paying less interest from the beginning of your loan.
- 23:50Speaker 1: So it just really makes sense. But for myself, I
- 23:53Speaker 1: think people would tell you it's not a good idea
- 23:55Speaker 1: to pay up your mortgage. People will tell you all
- 23:57Speaker 1: kinds of things, what they do, what they tell you
- 23:58Speaker 1: that people justly out there. They will tell you don't
- 24:01Speaker 1: pay off people. I remember God said, I'm sorry for
- 24:03Speaker 1: cutting because I gotta be mad. Somebody told me, don't
- 24:05Speaker 1: don't pay that all. What what are you talking about?
- 24:07Speaker 1: Do when you're making a certain amount of income, I'm
- 24:09Speaker 1: taking property tax, don't even apply anymore properly next only
- 24:13Speaker 1: go up to a certain If you've gotta find me
- 24:14Speaker 1: in the hall, believe me, properly tax don cuple five
- 24:17Speaker 1: million dollars. You're stopping in the one million dollar range.
- 24:19Speaker 1: So everything else the government is gonna take anyway. So
- 24:22Speaker 1: so that's why that's why I really value you, know,
- 24:25Speaker 1: your finding your financial literacy campaign. Talk to us a
- 24:28Speaker 1: little bit about that, because you know so much to
- 24:30Speaker 1: talk about this. I'm gonna just tell you, like Angela
- 24:32Speaker 1: that's gonna be our first conversation and I'm just gonna
- 24:34Speaker 1: expose my my listeners to you. But you got so
- 24:37Speaker 1: much going on, so let's talk about the financial literacy.
- 24:40Speaker 1: You know, you know you, you know you you. You've
- 24:42Speaker 1: been recognized by with a Day in New York City.
- 24:45Speaker 1: You know you're the popular club. You gotta you know,
- 24:48Speaker 1: you get a hundred thousands of one point five million
- 24:51Speaker 1: views on your lip service show every time and airs.
- 24:55Speaker 1: You know you got you. What's the goal? What's the
- 24:59Speaker 1: go I think as to her this ideas to literacy part,
- 25:04Speaker 1: I do this thing called Wealth Wednesday's once a month
- 25:06Speaker 1: for stacy and that's actually at my juice bar, because
- 25:08Speaker 1: I have a juice bar in Brooklyn called Juices for Life,
- 25:11Speaker 1: and we do that there because when I first opened
- 25:14Speaker 1: that juice bar, it will be where four years in
- 25:17Speaker 1: September since we opened this juice bar with Stop Pea
- 25:20Speaker 1: from the Locks and when we first got the juice bar,
- 25:23Speaker 1: I got this space in Brooklyn for us. That's amazing,
- 25:25Speaker 1: Like it's a beautiful space, it's nice and open, it
- 25:28Speaker 1: has a backyard. And my goal was always I wanted
- 25:31Speaker 1: this to be a place where the community can come
- 25:33Speaker 1: in Best Side and yes it's the best guide and
- 25:36Speaker 1: have events. It's on Malcolm X Boulevard. And for me,
- 25:40Speaker 1: I wanted to be something that's also caters to our community,
- 25:42Speaker 1: the core people that are from the Best Side, that
- 25:45Speaker 1: are from that neighborhood, so they feel like this is
- 25:47Speaker 1: for us, because there's so much sense of fake gentrification
- 25:49Speaker 1: going on, so many businesses coming in that aren't trying
- 25:52Speaker 1: to link us still not welcome to be in those businesses.
- 25:55Speaker 1: So I wanted it to be a place where it's
- 25:57Speaker 1: not get your stuff and go, it's more comments, it down,
- 26:00Speaker 1: have a meeting if you need to say all day,
- 26:02Speaker 1: we got the TV. It's a little lounge area and France.
- 26:06Speaker 1: What do you want to do? You want to have
- 26:07Speaker 1: a baby shower here? You need to have an We
- 26:09Speaker 1: said all kinds of things up for people. So I
- 26:11Speaker 1: started was Wednesday because I wanted to have something that
- 26:14Speaker 1: with free for the community that was also empowering them
- 26:17Speaker 1: to know that they can be successful and can make
- 26:20Speaker 1: money and can be homeowners and can have great credit.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Now here's the thing about it, how times changed, Because
- 26:27Speaker 1: you know, are a little background on me and July
- 26:30Speaker 1: moved to New York and a eight to be a
- 26:31Speaker 1: stand up comic. I wanted to be the next next,
- 26:34Speaker 1: you know. And Eddie Murphy was hot out there. Richard
- 26:37Speaker 1: Prova course was always hot. And I remember I took
- 26:39Speaker 1: the subway and I got off Bitto. Okay, I thought
- 26:44Speaker 1: I was in another country. You know what I'm talking about?
- 26:49Speaker 1: She went, no juice back right now. And it just
- 26:53Speaker 1: shows you how that whole community has moved itself forward.
- 26:58Speaker 1: And how did you know know that's why you have
- 27:00Speaker 1: a basketball team there now, you know? And I always say,
- 27:03Speaker 1: the interesting thing about New York is that is that
- 27:05Speaker 1: everybody you know, Manhattan gets all the hype. Okay, but
- 27:09Speaker 1: Brooklyn's his own city. You don't even have to leave
- 27:11Speaker 1: bro A great person stands alone. They asked you what
- 27:15Speaker 1: you from. You don't say that you and I am
- 27:17Speaker 1: a fan of yours and also know that I just
- 27:20Speaker 1: want to let you know that keep doing what you're doing.
- 27:22Speaker 1: This whole multiple the multi stream, multiple streams. We income
- 27:25Speaker 1: being able to understand that the community comes first. That's
- 27:29Speaker 1: your brand. And also the fact that you are female.
- 27:31Speaker 1: That represents being you and being strong and being having
- 27:34Speaker 1: a voce that that delivers a message that's equal for everybody.
- 27:38Speaker 1: That's important and I want you to maintain. We'll be
- 27:40Speaker 1: back with more money Making Conversation with the star of
- 27:43Speaker 1: the Breakfast Club, Angela p. Money Making Conversations continues online
- 27:49Speaker 1: at www dot money Making Conversations dot com and follow
- 27:53Speaker 1: money Making Conversations on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Our next
- 28:03Speaker 1: guest is the first time on the show, which I'm
- 28:05Speaker 1: always excited because I get to learn new things. I
- 28:07Speaker 1: get to expand my conversation base. Keep talking to the
- 28:10Speaker 1: same people. You don't get educated as much. I will
- 28:13Speaker 1: be educated after this show. But she about food, and
- 28:16Speaker 1: everybody who listens to this show knows Rashwan McDonald is
- 28:20Speaker 1: an all time great foodie. My next guest restaurant is
- 28:24Speaker 1: the premier comfort food comfort food destination in New York City,
- 28:28Speaker 1: as you will see from her Instagram page at Melbourne Harlem.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Celebrities like nas Nick Cannon, her cousins sienns April, Ryan
- 28:39Speaker 1: dil Hugely and many more all in your her American
- 28:43Speaker 1: comfort food. I want to know what that is, you know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: American comfortable. She has always seen on the Food Network,
- 28:48Speaker 1: whether she is a judge on Beat, Bobby Flay cooking,
- 28:51Speaker 1: with the amazing host on the kitchen or trying to
- 28:54Speaker 1: pick the winner and the finale are the Worst Cooks
- 28:56Speaker 1: in America? That's one of my favorite shows. Those people
- 28:59Speaker 1: really can't cool. Please working the money making conversation my
- 29:02Speaker 1: girl Melbolle, Wilson, Rest Shawan, how are you like? You know?
- 29:10Speaker 1: I had to put all those credits in there because
- 29:12Speaker 1: some of them were just so worth talking about. Now
- 29:15Speaker 1: now because Bobby Flay as my boy. Then you got
- 29:18Speaker 1: the kitchen what you gotta come on there with a
- 29:20Speaker 1: little nice little quick recipes. You gotta put out real
- 29:23Speaker 1: fast so so people can capture at home, and it's
- 29:26Speaker 1: kind of like competing. Everybody taste and sample your stuff
- 29:28Speaker 1: on the spot, so you know, you know, you gotta
- 29:30Speaker 1: have your act together. And then but my favorite show,
- 29:34Speaker 1: Worst Cooks in America A well, they truly are the
- 29:40Speaker 1: worst cooks when they start out. However, you know, they
- 29:43Speaker 1: get in there with ambarrel and they throw down. They
- 29:47Speaker 1: really learned how to cook. And uh, I've been really
- 29:50Speaker 1: inspired and surprisingly happy with some of the results that
- 29:54Speaker 1: have come out of that show. Well, I'm gonna tell
- 29:57Speaker 1: you something. The ones that they cut early, they just
- 30:00Speaker 1: and cool. They they they they somewhere destroying people's lives
- 30:04Speaker 1: right now. You know what, I've been blessed because I've
- 30:08Speaker 1: only done the finale on Worst Cooks and Worst Bakers,
- 30:11Speaker 1: so I consider myself. But you obviously some of those
- 30:14Speaker 1: early rounds, I don't know if your girl can do
- 30:17Speaker 1: that because you they're so bad. You almost talk, You
- 30:20Speaker 1: almost think they just you know, oh, they just want
- 30:23Speaker 1: to be on TV, especially on the celebrity side. You know,
- 30:26Speaker 1: you think, you know, it's like Dancing with the Stars,
- 30:28Speaker 1: you know, that's the celebrities. You have to regular everyday people.
- 30:31Speaker 1: But you know, if you're a cook person, you really
- 30:34Speaker 1: know they don't that that's not what they do. You know,
- 30:36Speaker 1: when you really do know, and you know, cooking is
- 30:39Speaker 1: a labor of love and it's something that not everyone
- 30:42Speaker 1: can do, but it's something that everyone can enjoy, especially
- 30:46Speaker 1: when you get that skinnish product at the end on
- 30:48Speaker 1: your plate. So and ultimately that's why I'm in business,
- 30:52Speaker 1: because not everyone can and not everyone wants to. So well,
- 30:56Speaker 1: let's talk about that. Okay, we we we intro starts
- 30:59Speaker 1: you at you know, restaurant opening, and we're gonna talk
- 31:02Speaker 1: about your new restaurant that's opening, and I want to
- 31:04Speaker 1: put that banner on my social media and fan club
- 31:07Speaker 1: let them know because I go to New York a lot,
- 31:09Speaker 1: and so you're definitely going to see my mud because
- 31:11Speaker 1: I am truly a foodie. Now you're intro talked about
- 31:14Speaker 1: comfort food, American comfort food. What exactly is that? Well?
- 31:19Speaker 1: To me, American comfort food is food that evokes warm
- 31:22Speaker 1: and wonderful memories. It's food that transports you back to
- 31:27Speaker 1: great times and year. Everybody in the studio, everybody's studio,
- 31:31Speaker 1: they perked up their ears. Now come on, now, come on,
- 31:35Speaker 1: don't be messing with us like that. Now, John can
- 31:38Speaker 1: be that cheesy, gooey, delicious macaroni and cheese that your
- 31:43Speaker 1: Matha used to throw that out with kid, Or it
- 31:46Speaker 1: can be that tato salad that Uncle John used to make.
- 31:49Speaker 1: You know, it's just that transforms you. And I think
- 31:53Speaker 1: these days and John, we all need to be comforted
- 31:56Speaker 1: and take him back to those times. Y'all do potato
- 31:59Speaker 1: salad that you're restaurant. Now, I don't do potato salad.
- 32:02Speaker 1: I do tato salad. It's a big difference. Now you
- 32:05Speaker 1: don't put no pole in front of them because I'm
- 32:08Speaker 1: gonna tell you something that is a whole you would
- 32:12Speaker 1: make me mad. Put some bad potatoes out there. You
- 32:15Speaker 1: got to know their menu, because that's the first thing,
- 32:16Speaker 1: because I'm always searching for food. I'm searching for good
- 32:20Speaker 1: potatoes at Tato Sat. But see, I'm touching it that
- 32:22Speaker 1: because she said Tata Sat because it's right my CAMPI
- 32:25Speaker 1: from South Carolina. Though. That explains it all right, So
- 32:30Speaker 1: so this is good comfort food now now, So so
- 32:34Speaker 1: what do you where exactly is the restaurant located, the
- 32:36Speaker 1: name of the restaurant, Where is it located? What are
- 32:38Speaker 1: the hours? So the restaurant is called Melba's, easy for
- 32:41Speaker 1: me to remember, and it's on the southwest corner of
- 32:45Speaker 1: one hundred and fourteenth Street in Harlem. So it's three
- 32:49Speaker 1: hundred West one hundred and fourteen Street, New York, one
- 32:54Speaker 1: zero zero to five are Instagram is Melba's within us
- 32:59Speaker 1: are of them And I'm going bread and Butter in Harlem.
- 33:03Speaker 1: And that's why it was really important for me to
- 33:06Speaker 1: open up in a community that I love so much,
- 33:09Speaker 1: but the community that has changed a lot o racial back.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I remember because I moved when I moved to you know,
- 33:20Speaker 1: I've been in New York several times. I moved to
- 33:21Speaker 1: New York when I first started doing comedy in and
- 33:26Speaker 1: you know that you couldn't even catch a cab north.
- 33:28Speaker 1: You know, they wouldn't even they wouldn't take you north.
- 33:31Speaker 1: That alone past Hall of you weren't you weren't going there.
- 33:35Speaker 1: That That's why they had the gypsy cabs and was
- 33:37Speaker 1: really changed the game for Hall of and traffic with Uber.
- 33:41Speaker 1: Uber was picking you up everywhere, and so that really
- 33:44Speaker 1: really changed the game as far as transportation up there
- 33:47Speaker 1: because you you put the Uber in and they come
- 33:49Speaker 1: get you pick you're on the corner and you go back.
- 33:51Speaker 1: That really changed the whole cab service for for for
- 33:55Speaker 1: everybody in the city of New York. And so for
- 33:58Speaker 1: New York. Where I loved buy Hall OFM was that
- 34:00Speaker 1: they had always had these unique restaurants where you're going
- 34:03Speaker 1: in you get good original food. I called the food
- 34:06Speaker 1: that you have original food because of the fact that
- 34:09Speaker 1: it does take you back because so many times you
- 34:12Speaker 1: can't good good vegetables, a good corn bread, a good
- 34:16Speaker 1: good good you know, it's just good food. So let's
- 34:20Speaker 1: go through your menu and you putting that together. The menu,
- 34:22Speaker 1: because now you got me hungry, and I'm trying to
- 34:24Speaker 1: figure out when I'm gonna get back up in New York.
- 34:26Speaker 1: And here's the deal about me, Melbourne. When I come
- 34:29Speaker 1: to your restaurant, I don't want, no, I don't, I
- 34:31Speaker 1: don't I pay. I'm one of these guys here. No no,
- 34:35Speaker 1: no no. You come over there with and then asked
- 34:37Speaker 1: me to give me the I got that. Now I'm
- 34:39Speaker 1: gonna really be mad at you because you're an entrepreneur
- 34:42Speaker 1: and so so I always go in. So tell me
- 34:44Speaker 1: about to but I'll tell you that that's the only
- 34:49Speaker 1: way I work. You know, Steve Harve and I when
- 34:51Speaker 1: we was traveling, we we we Hey. I got that.
- 34:54Speaker 1: I got that because of course you know that when
- 35:00Speaker 1: the when, the when the phone company, because you know,
- 35:03Speaker 1: I can't tell them I got that. Yeah, I need
- 35:06Speaker 1: I need to write that check. So I truly do
- 35:09Speaker 1: appreciate that. And when you talk about supporting small businesses,
- 35:14Speaker 1: especially businesses of color, the way that we can make
- 35:17Speaker 1: sure that we stay in business is through economic development,
- 35:21Speaker 1: which means making sure that our dollars circulate within our
- 35:24Speaker 1: community at least eight times. And that happens when people
- 35:28Speaker 1: like you come into these communities and pays. So I
- 35:33Speaker 1: truly and support hearing that from you, and thank you.
- 35:35Speaker 1: We're gonna plan this out because everybody knows me. I
- 35:39Speaker 1: just went up to my board. Saw him in Seattle June,
- 35:41Speaker 1: baby up there, went up there. So when I say
- 35:44Speaker 1: I'm gonna do something, I go and do it now
- 35:46Speaker 1: because he get you down a Tuesday night so you
- 35:49Speaker 1: can experience the live music. Okay, cool, this this, this
- 35:53Speaker 1: is all good. This is a really really good conversation. Okay.
- 35:55Speaker 1: So so when you talk about you said in a
- 35:58Speaker 1: small kitchen, said about you said, it sets about a
- 36:01Speaker 1: hundred people under the nine. Okay, the new restaurant what what? What?
- 36:05Speaker 1: What's the capacity going to be on that? I'm so excited.
- 36:08Speaker 1: The new restaurant is the spot that seats seventy and
- 36:12Speaker 1: it's seafood. It's all the food. Um, you know, instead
- 36:18Speaker 1: of going to city out and you can you can
- 36:19Speaker 1: stay in our neighborhood and come to Melvin's three minutes
- 36:24Speaker 1: away from the original space. And it's paying homage to
- 36:30Speaker 1: the black fisherman because when we change to this country
- 36:33Speaker 1: as slaves, a lot of us came from the coast
- 36:36Speaker 1: and we had fisherman skills and so we learned how
- 36:39Speaker 1: to fish, and so it's it's paying tribute to women.
- 36:43Speaker 1: We have a team of amazing women that are that
- 36:45Speaker 1: are partners with me and this venture. We have. Our
- 36:50Speaker 1: fishmonger is a female who were super excited about our
- 36:54Speaker 1: our some We have a female So that's doing the
- 36:57Speaker 1: whole wineless who's from how Harlem That was just written
- 37:00Speaker 1: up in Food and Wine magazine. Chiha McCoy are executive
- 37:05Speaker 1: chef chef Mimi, who is phenomenal who lives in Arlom
- 37:09Speaker 1: has a huge sea food background. And then there's me.
- 37:13Speaker 1: So it's women coming together to celebrate food and we're
- 37:17Speaker 1: super duper excited about it. It will be open the
- 37:20Speaker 1: first week in February. And while it's gonna be amazing, Okay, cool.
- 37:26Speaker 1: So you're timing my visit. You're timing my visit to
- 37:28Speaker 1: New York. I got that meets. I can do two
- 37:31Speaker 1: restaurant stops, that's right, Okay cool. Now, just a natural
- 37:36Speaker 1: transition because I want to talk about you becoming the
- 37:38Speaker 1: first African American female to be the president of the
- 37:41Speaker 1: New York City Hospitality Alliance. Let's tell everybody what the
- 37:44Speaker 1: New York City Hospitality Alliance is not the hallm but
- 37:47Speaker 1: the New York City Hospitality Alliance. And while I well,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I've been a member of the New York City Hospitality
- 37:55Speaker 1: Alliance since its inception. And what it is, it's over
- 37:59Speaker 1: three thousand unstaurants, um all based in in the five
- 38:03Speaker 1: boons of New York City. Is everyone from Tao to Lavo,
- 38:06Speaker 1: to Nobu to Trabeca Grill to Sylvia's to b LT Steak.
- 38:10Speaker 1: So it is the most premier restaurant here in the city.
- 38:14Speaker 1: And we lobby on behalf of the needs of not
- 38:18Speaker 1: just a restaurant, but the nightlife venues, you know, from
- 38:21Speaker 1: from d L to um oh god god, I can't
- 38:25Speaker 1: even to Marquee, uh, you know, to the Gold Bar,
- 38:29Speaker 1: but some of the biggest and best places in the city.
- 38:31Speaker 1: And we lobby on behalf of of our of our venues,
- 38:36Speaker 1: you know. Um. The city sometimes under Mayor de Blasio
- 38:39Speaker 1: can be very difficult to business owners um in terms
- 38:43Speaker 1: of fees of commercial property taxes, etcetera. So we lobby
- 38:47Speaker 1: on behalf of of New York owned restaurants and nightclubs.
- 38:53Speaker 1: And this is the first time, not only that they've
- 38:55Speaker 1: had a female as the president, but a person of
- 38:58Speaker 1: color in general as a president. So I'm super duper
- 39:02Speaker 1: excited and just coming upon my year one tenure as
- 39:07Speaker 1: the president of the New York City Hospitality Alliance. Well,
- 39:10Speaker 1: I want to group congratulation to you, first of all,
- 39:13Speaker 1: and secondly for coming on my show. You'll be seeing me,
- 39:16Speaker 1: I know, Super Bowls of February. Second, So the week
- 39:18Speaker 1: of February nine, I would be in New York City
- 39:21Speaker 1: to visit both for your restaurants. One of the restaurants
- 39:23Speaker 1: I'm especially ordered that corn bread. Put that out there,
- 39:27Speaker 1: and then give me some good seafood at the other restaurant.
- 39:30Speaker 1: But again, continue your success. Um again, You're special because
- 39:36Speaker 1: you want it and you earned it, and I'm gonna
- 39:39Speaker 1: support you not only by a visit, but any social
- 39:42Speaker 1: media post that you want to have please let me
- 39:44Speaker 1: know and I would definitely post the social media when
- 39:48Speaker 1: your restaurant, your two a few restaurants open to New
- 39:50Speaker 1: York City first week of February. Okay, rast, I thank
- 39:55Speaker 1: you alone, will talk soon, but we'll see each other soon. Okay.

- 42:05Speaker 1: My next guest, it's the third time every year she
- 42:09Speaker 1: comes on the show. Like it's like it's like a
- 42:11Speaker 1: year because the first time it was twenty seventeen in December,
- 42:15Speaker 1: and we came back in in December again, I believe,
- 42:20Speaker 1: and then now we're in January. I'm a little off
- 42:24Speaker 1: on my annual you know, fixed that I gotta have
- 42:27Speaker 1: with Cat that she comes in with energy. My next
- 42:31Speaker 1: guest is a tattoo artist, business owner, painter, philanthropists and
- 42:35Speaker 1: social media influence and reality television star. She's the first
- 42:39Speaker 1: African American woman to own a tattoo studio in Los Angeles,
- 42:44Speaker 1: achievement noticed after being discovered on vich once hit series
- 42:47Speaker 1: Black and Crew Chicago artistic and creative handworkers included and
- 42:52Speaker 1: doing tattoos for countless celebrities and athletes. Please welcome again,
- 42:57Speaker 1: Katrina cat Tat Jackson. Hey, thank you so much for
- 43:02Speaker 1: having me back. Always so good to shop it out
- 43:04Speaker 1: with you. Well, you know, um, last time he was on,
- 43:07Speaker 1: you know you you just opened the tattoo's location and
- 43:12Speaker 1: what's your name of it? Tell us everybody where's that?
- 43:14Speaker 1: Where's that? The shop is called Enigma Tattoo And we're
- 43:18Speaker 1: right in Beverly Hills or right on Peko and Robertson,
- 43:21Speaker 1: So it's a pretty popular intersection. Were right in the
- 43:24Speaker 1: center of the city. Yeah, because because the reason is
- 43:26Speaker 1: because you know, sometimes when traffic is bad, I take
- 43:29Speaker 1: Robertson and can make that left and I gotta go
- 43:33Speaker 1: right past Peek Cold, you know, and I had to
- 43:36Speaker 1: stop because I'm trying to get to Santa Monica. Make
- 43:38Speaker 1: that right so I get into Hollywood. So I'll make
- 43:41Speaker 1: that left because I always stay because she's gonna be
- 43:43Speaker 1: mad because I always stay at the at the International
- 43:46Speaker 1: Intercomo the hotel, which is right there in Century City.
- 43:49Speaker 1: I'm right down the street from so oh yeah, yeah,
- 43:52Speaker 1: next time you gotta pull over and come on in. Yes,
- 43:55Speaker 1: what's what's the experience? You know, because when here's tattoo,
- 43:58Speaker 1: because I know you have an experience when it comes
- 44:00Speaker 1: into your location. Talk to us about the experience. Um,
- 44:04Speaker 1: you mean like the experience of like a client. So
- 44:07Speaker 1: like clients, I know, you have your work on the
- 44:09Speaker 1: walls and things like that. Correct. Yeah, so, um, everyone
- 44:14Speaker 1: that steps from the shop they literally said, like, man,
- 44:17Speaker 1: the vibing here is just amazing, and that's what I wanted. Um,
- 44:22Speaker 1: I knew I wanted a tattoo shop. But when you
- 44:24Speaker 1: think about, um, tattoo shops in the past, like a
- 44:27Speaker 1: lot of them are like little hole in the wall
- 44:29Speaker 1: shops or you know, just not really like a super
- 44:32Speaker 1: comforting vibe. But like Enigma, when you walk in, it's
- 44:35Speaker 1: good music, good energy, beautiful artwork. I mean there's eight
- 44:40Speaker 1: of us and all of us are painters as well.
- 44:43Speaker 1: So people come in and they're literally like blown away
- 44:45Speaker 1: by all the art on the walls. And this is
- 44:48Speaker 1: like an art gallery, you know. So we've been blessed
- 44:51Speaker 1: to have UM two annual art shows since we've been
- 44:55Speaker 1: open um. People come in and purchased the artwork for
- 44:58Speaker 1: their homes, and you know, they get tattoos. So the
- 45:02Speaker 1: tattoo experience is just very, very relaxing, and I guess
- 45:06Speaker 1: you could say scenic, you know, because they're you know,
- 45:09Speaker 1: they get to just look at all the art while
- 45:11Speaker 1: they get tattoos. We always have good music going, good conversation.
- 45:15Speaker 1: It's just a good vibe. Well that's why. That's why
- 45:17Speaker 1: I was looking one of the people understand that, you know,
- 45:20Speaker 1: you know people, all people have different version of what
- 45:23Speaker 1: they feel the tattoo. I've seen them, you know, you
- 45:25Speaker 1: go down Hollywood sun sunset, and then you just see
- 45:29Speaker 1: you look where they go. Oh, I'm not going up
- 45:31Speaker 1: in there, you know. Or you know, that's not a
- 45:33Speaker 1: place that that you want to go for the very
- 45:35Speaker 1: first time to get your tattoo. But that's the experience
- 45:38Speaker 1: that you didn't want at your location. And and and
- 45:41Speaker 1: when we first talk, when you first opened it, that's
- 45:43Speaker 1: what really excited me was that you was creating an
- 45:46Speaker 1: experience and that the people will walk away and tell
- 45:50Speaker 1: somebody else about that experience. And that's really and that's
- 45:53Speaker 1: very in line with you know what what what you
- 45:56Speaker 1: get when you go to beauty slaws and uh, barbershops
- 46:01Speaker 1: and this experience. That's why you keep coming back because
- 46:03Speaker 1: you sit there and talk and chat chop it up.
- 46:05Speaker 1: But you're adding the creative aspect of artwork, which is
- 46:08Speaker 1: really part of your passion. Right. Yeah. And I feel
- 46:12Speaker 1: like with any um, like with any service industry, whether
- 46:15Speaker 1: it's like um tattoo shop or like you said, hair
- 46:18Speaker 1: salon and Barbara, like you know, social media is still
- 46:21Speaker 1: prevalent these days, um, but really what matters is the
- 46:25Speaker 1: word of mouth, you know, and what people are saying
- 46:28Speaker 1: and spreading the word about about your place of business.
- 46:31Speaker 1: So I think that that's more important than than anything. Well,
- 46:35Speaker 1: you know, the thing about it is that though first
- 46:36Speaker 1: of all, you said social media now, uh, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 1: you're just posing left and right. Just that's just out there,
- 46:42Speaker 1: just posing, you know, And so so are you modeling
- 46:45Speaker 1: now or because because I just and that's a good
- 46:48Speaker 1: thing now because all your all your all your poses
- 46:50Speaker 1: are in good taste and and and and but the
- 46:53Speaker 1: but the response and the engagement that you're getting is
- 46:56Speaker 1: really incredible. And I commend you on that because you're
- 46:59Speaker 1: doing it more or I just stopped started following you
- 47:02Speaker 1: at the wrong time because you always pop up on
- 47:03Speaker 1: my timeline that posing again, posing again, and so so so?
- 47:09Speaker 1: Is that is that personal growth for you to realize
- 47:12Speaker 1: that who you all? You feel good about yoursel I'm
- 47:14Speaker 1: not saying you never felt good about yourself, but you
- 47:16Speaker 1: really are showing your brain and that's part of your marketing. Yeah,
- 47:20Speaker 1: thank you so much. I really appreciate you noticing that
- 47:23Speaker 1: because I remember when I first started tattooing. Um, I
- 47:26Speaker 1: felt like I had to um be, I had to
- 47:29Speaker 1: hide the face and you know, the beauty behind the
- 47:32Speaker 1: girl that was the artist. I felt like in order
- 47:35Speaker 1: to be taken serious in this industry, I could only
- 47:37Speaker 1: put out my tattoos, you know, like it's not about me,
- 47:41Speaker 1: It's not about what I look like. It's only about
- 47:43Speaker 1: my artwork. And I've built up my portfolio to a
- 47:46Speaker 1: place where people know that my work speaks for itself.
- 47:49Speaker 1: But um, thanks to you know, reality TV, people got
- 47:52Speaker 1: to see me and got to get to know me
- 47:55Speaker 1: and know who I am behind you know, um all
- 47:59Speaker 1: the tattoos and stuff. So now I'm not a place
- 48:02Speaker 1: where I'm comfortable, like I feel like my work has
- 48:05Speaker 1: spoken for itself, and I can also like I work
- 48:08Speaker 1: hard too. I'm in the gym, you know, like I
- 48:10Speaker 1: have beautiful tattoos on my body, and I've been blessed
- 48:14Speaker 1: for like you know, endorsement deals and beauty brands and
- 48:17Speaker 1: fashion brands to recognize me, and you want me to
- 48:20Speaker 1: represent their brands. So it's just crazy how things come
- 48:23Speaker 1: full circles. You know. I've always just stayed true to
- 48:26Speaker 1: just being the best that I can in any aspect,
- 48:29Speaker 1: whether it's working, you know, tattoos, my artwork, working out,
- 48:33Speaker 1: and um, things are just starting to comfortable circles. So
- 48:36Speaker 1: I used to remember I used to take pictures and
- 48:38Speaker 1: my mom would be like, like, why are you just
- 48:40Speaker 1: taking pictures for no reason? It's for a magazine or something,
- 48:44Speaker 1: And now it's for it's for an endorsement, you know what, right? Right? Oh, no,
- 48:49Speaker 1: you're gonna fire you. You know, you know you know me.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I'm I'm a professional. I gotta say an eye for talent.
- 48:53Speaker 1: I understand what brandings are all about, and I just
- 48:56Speaker 1: have noticed the comfort zone and then a a targeted
- 49:00Speaker 1: approach to what you're trying to do because I can
- 49:02Speaker 1: tell everybody all the pictures are tasteful, All the pictures
- 49:05Speaker 1: are tasteful, they all professional. But there what is what
- 49:07Speaker 1: it's done for me as a person who doesn't have
- 49:09Speaker 1: a tattoo is like and a guy. You know, I
- 49:12Speaker 1: remember when when it was created an ex computer Steve
- 49:15Speaker 1: Talk Show, when somebody came up with a tattoo were
- 49:17Speaker 1: called car washing. We had to cover those up. And
- 49:20Speaker 1: what you've done is normalized the process and you and
- 49:23Speaker 1: other people now you know, we know it's a it's
- 49:25Speaker 1: a big world of people out there who own TV
- 49:27Speaker 1: that uh doing tattoos. But but seeing you an attractive
- 49:31Speaker 1: person has allowed people to understand that there is value,
- 49:35Speaker 1: there's artwork. That's what that's what really, that's what it
- 49:37Speaker 1: attracts me, is like you are a walking piece of art.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I appreciate that. It's and it's
- 49:50Speaker 1: really that's a that's an amazing thing to say that
- 49:52Speaker 1: did you you you you are a walking piece of
- 49:55Speaker 1: piece of art that of course cannot be bought, but
- 49:58Speaker 1: can't be sponsored for imercial indorsement. And that's that's beautiful
- 50:04Speaker 1: because the reason I enjoyed talking to you. Is that
- 50:07Speaker 1: Cat tatism Because I just watched your our conversation. I
- 50:11Speaker 1: remember when we first started. You know, I could tell
- 50:14Speaker 1: you our first conversation. You're trying to find who you are,
- 50:17Speaker 1: you know, and you you know you you walked away
- 50:19Speaker 1: from the TV show and you didn't you didn't know
- 50:22Speaker 1: what the future help. But you were strong and saying
- 50:25Speaker 1: I'm gonna make it, I'm gonna be special. And then
- 50:27Speaker 1: when you came on the show last year, I could
- 50:29Speaker 1: tell it when you when you opened the Tattoos Studio
- 50:32Speaker 1: and Beverly Hills, your energy was way up because you
- 50:35Speaker 1: really started focusing on and then this whole year just
- 50:38Speaker 1: watching you on social media, just watching you your personal growth,
- 50:41Speaker 1: your physical growth. You know, just now sky's the limit
- 50:46Speaker 1: now for you. You know that, right? Thank you? I
- 50:49Speaker 1: appreciate that. Yes, that's absolutely So let's talk about some
- 50:53Speaker 1: stuff that's going on that they sent to me. Okay.
- 50:56Speaker 1: Cat has been invited by the NFL Players Association to
- 50:59Speaker 1: this year's Super in Miami, Florida. Cat would designed create
- 51:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl inspired artwork and lead the annual National Football
- 51:07Speaker 1: League of Players Association Painting with the Pros event at
- 51:10Speaker 1: the local Miami Dade County School this year. The school
- 51:13Speaker 1: is Carol's City Senior High School that you guys are
- 51:17Speaker 1: gonna be How did that happen? How did you how
- 51:19Speaker 1: did that come about? And what were your thoughts? Did you?
- 51:22Speaker 1: Were you involved and saying this this is the actual
- 51:25Speaker 1: concept of what you wanted to present at the school? Um? Yeah,
- 51:31Speaker 1: this is UM. So this will be the third time, um,
- 51:36Speaker 1: the third annual Super Bowl that I've worked with the
- 51:39Speaker 1: Players Association. So I was connected with them about three
- 51:43Speaker 1: years ago and we did the first I forgot how
- 51:45Speaker 1: m it happened, but I met um Carol, she's UM,
- 51:48Speaker 1: one of the leaving ladies of the association, and UM,
- 51:52Speaker 1: they partnered with me and they wanted me to design
- 51:55Speaker 1: the painting. And back then it was in Minnesota, So
- 51:58Speaker 1: you started out, nic that's extreme. That Minnesota, Miami, that's extreme.
- 52:02Speaker 1: That that's extreme, so extreme, Oh my god. And it
- 52:06Speaker 1: was so cold that the whole time. And I was
- 52:08Speaker 1: born in Minnesota, so I know all about that code.
- 52:12Speaker 1: You know, I'm from Chicago to so um it was
- 52:15Speaker 1: freezing cold. We did what we had to do. We
- 52:17Speaker 1: get the paintings with the high school. We went to
- 52:18Speaker 1: the events, but other than that, we did not leave
- 52:20Speaker 1: that hotel room like we were. It was freezing, But
- 52:24Speaker 1: that was an experienced and it was just so great
- 52:27Speaker 1: to be able to get in there and really do
- 52:29Speaker 1: hands on things. Um with high school. Actually you know
- 52:33Speaker 1: we talked about it, but initially I was going to
- 52:35Speaker 1: be a high school math teacher, so obviously took a
- 52:38Speaker 1: different career path. But any time that I can you know,
- 52:42Speaker 1: be back in that environment of being hands on and
- 52:46Speaker 1: you know, impacting somebody at such a young age where
- 52:49Speaker 1: you can really like make a difference in their future,
- 52:52Speaker 1: that is what really, like what thrills me. So m
- 52:57Speaker 1: I'm blessed. Like Minnesota was um. The first time it
- 53:00Speaker 1: was so amazing, and then they asked me back the
- 53:02Speaker 1: second time when it was in Atlanta, also amazing. That
- 53:05Speaker 1: time it was at book or T Washington High School
- 53:08Speaker 1: and those kids were so talented, like um they did
- 53:12Speaker 1: the band came through and um, we just painted together.
- 53:15Speaker 1: That one was amazing. So I'm really really excited for uh,
- 53:20Speaker 1: this one. This one was gonna be Miami. I'm sure
- 53:22Speaker 1: the weather is gonna be nice. I finished my artwork
- 53:25Speaker 1: that I submitted for the high school that we're all
- 53:28Speaker 1: going to be painting. I kept it real seeing it
- 53:30Speaker 1: real Beach five, Miami Beach five. So um, it was
- 53:35Speaker 1: very um. This painting that I designed was inspired by
- 53:39Speaker 1: the whole Miami art scene, so I got to get really,
- 53:41Speaker 1: really really creative with it. You know, art basils in
- 53:44Speaker 1: Miami every December, so I think that, um, this time
- 53:49Speaker 1: is just gonna be I'm so exciting you are in inspiration.
- 53:53Speaker 1: Like I said, uh I, I've enjoyed and I will
- 53:56Speaker 1: continue to enjoy watching your growth. That's a cool thing
- 53:58Speaker 1: about social media. You could just see people an individual,
- 54:01Speaker 1: an individual trans you know, transcend, you know, trying to
- 54:04Speaker 1: start changing, start elevating and and being comfortable within their skin.
- 54:08Speaker 1: And you do have a brand that's really really unique
- 54:12Speaker 1: and very special. And I'm talking to mcgaka tree to
- 54:15Speaker 1: Kattat Jackson. She's the owner of a Enigma tattoo and
- 54:19Speaker 1: Beverly Hills, which is right there on the corner of
- 54:22Speaker 1: Robertson and Pico, right there, and uh, I want to
- 54:26Speaker 1: know she's doing a great event. Third year with the
- 54:29Speaker 1: National Football League Players Association painting with the pros. Again.
- 54:34Speaker 1: I always want to appreciate you taking the time to
- 54:35Speaker 1: be on my show. But know this, it's our third
- 54:38Speaker 1: year talking you know, off air, I'll promote anything for you.
- 54:43Speaker 1: You not have not used me because I just want
- 54:45Speaker 1: to let you know a lot of people understand why
- 54:46Speaker 1: I created money making conversation. Money making conversation is I
- 54:50Speaker 1: know my brand, and I know my brand grows just
- 54:53Speaker 1: a certain I reached females of my follows a female,
- 54:57Speaker 1: so no, I'm reaching the target that you there will
- 54:59Speaker 1: be are relatable to you. And so I always use

- 55:22Speaker 1: you might see me in Miami, so I know because
- 55:24Speaker 1: Steven and Smith talking about he's going down there, so
- 55:26Speaker 1: you might and not know. I know, and I know

- 55:30Speaker 1: ask him so he can't get me in on anything
- 55:32Speaker 1: I need. And I got Troy Advance and he's the
- 55:35Speaker 1: vice president of Operations. I know he'll give me in
- 55:37Speaker 1: so you may see me in Miami and we take
- 55:39Speaker 1: herself together. We take herself together. Okay, absolutely, stay strong.
