- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. As we move into the book of
- 0:45Mark, we're met with a fast start.
- 0:47In just the first chapter of Mark we see John the Baptist
- 0:50preaching Jesus being baptized, Jesus calling several of his
- 0:54disciples, Jesus casting out demons including one
- 0:58particularly detailed account of a demon possessed man in the
- 1:00synagogue, Jesus healing many sick with various diseases
- 1:04including Peter's mother-in-law, Jesus preaching the Gospel, and
- 1:07finally Jesus healing a leper who spread the news so widely
- 1:11that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city.
- 1:14Wow. Remember, it took until Matthew
- 1:16chapter 4 to see Jesus tempted in the wilderness.
- 1:19Mark had us there by verse 13 of chapter 1.
- 1:22In fact, this account is so to the point that we see the author
- 1:26use the word immediately no less than 10 times in the 1st chapter
- 1:29of this gospel. 10 times. So why the speed?
- 1:33Why move so quickly? The Holy Spirit through Mark the
- 1:36human author, wants us to realize that Jesus was a man,
- 1:40the God man to be precise, on a mission.
- 1:43He had a goal. He was under orders from God the
- 1:46Father, and from day one he was bent toward accomplishing the
- 1:49mission the Father had given him.
- 1:52We know as readers on this side of Jesus life that ultimately
- 1:55that mission was Jesus death and resurrection, His purchasing of
- 1:59a people for himself by his blood.
- 2:01But leading up to that time that played out primarily through
- 2:04Jesus proclamation of God's salvation plan.
- 2:07We see that in verse 14 and 15 which say now after John had
- 2:11been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee preaching the
- 2:14gospel of God and saying the time is fulfilled and the
- 2:18Kingdom of God is at hand, repent and believe in the
- 2:20gospel. Jesus came preaching telling
- 2:23this good news that if we would repent and believe the gospel,
- 2:28we can have forgiveness and even eternal life with God.
- 2:31This was Christ's priority and he wasted no time going about
- 2:34it. Again, in verse 38, in the midst
- 2:37of a host of healings and casting out many demons, Jesus
- 2:41tells his disciples, let us go somewhere else, to the towns
- 2:44nearby, so that I'm a preach there also.
- 2:47For that is what I came for. That is what he came for.
- 2:51He was healing. He was entering into physical
- 2:54brokenness and undoing the result of sin and individual
- 2:57lives. But that was not the main point.
- 3:00No, that was just a pointer, A signpost for his message, his
- 3:04call to repent and believe. And so throughout the book of
- 3:08Mark and even throughout the other Gospels, keep this in
- 3:10mind. Jesus healing ministry and his
- 3:13many miracles are amazing displays of his power.
- 3:16But the real weight, the real drive of his ministry is not the
- 3:19miracles, but the message. And in that message is the real
- 3:23power. Romans 116 says, For I am not
- 3:27ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation
- 3:31to everyone who believes, to the Jew 1st, and also to the Greek,
- 3:34the gospel, the power of God for salvation to everyone who
- 3:38believes. That is the main point.
