- 1:17Speaker 1: Lockkeeed Martin right there, you know they're not hiring there.
- 1:20Speaker 1: They're just not hiring anybody Locked Martin. Before embarking on
- 1:23Speaker 1: a career field with entertainment and tech talk, she decided
- 1:26Speaker 1: to combine her background and technology with her love of
- 1:29Speaker 1: entertainment to become a tech lifestyle expert. You have seen
- 1:33Speaker 1: her on such shows as Harry Carnick Jr. Good Morning America,
- 1:36Speaker 1: News One with my Man Rolling Martin, and now she's
- 1:39Speaker 1: on my show please again, because she was on my
- 1:42Speaker 1: show in twenty seventeen. Please welcome to Money Making Conversations.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Stephanie Humphrey, Hello, how are you? It's been like eighteen month.
- 1:55Speaker 1: I looked, I looked at my records. I'm went I
- 1:57Speaker 1: had you on in November of twenty seventeen. We can't
- 2:00Speaker 1: do that, I think, I distinctly say in our conversation,
- 2:04Speaker 1: I liked you, you said you like me, you said
- 2:07Speaker 1: we're gonna come to my shoreline, and we got a
- 2:10Speaker 1: year and five four months. Listen, I don't know how
- 2:14Speaker 1: it happened. I didn't happen no more. I'm just I'm
- 2:17Speaker 1: not taking for that. Put it on you're now you
- 2:20Speaker 1: know you're texting because if you take that mean you
- 2:22Speaker 1: have to contact people. You know, you got all that
- 2:24Speaker 1: you on you. But but but a great thing about
- 2:29Speaker 1: it is that you're back on my show. And and
- 2:32Speaker 1: it's important that you know. I was looking to this show, uh,
- 2:36Speaker 1: Spider Fight, a web show, Girls and the Spider Web Show.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And it was a movie last night and it was
- 2:41Speaker 1: about this girl tattoo spider tattoo whatever, and so it
- 2:45Speaker 1: was all about tech. You know. She she was turning
- 2:47Speaker 1: on cars, she was turning on she was controlling, uh,
- 2:50Speaker 1: she was controlling cameras when she walked in a room.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And so I said, this is perfect prep for my
- 2:56Speaker 1: interview with Stephanie the day because this is high tech
- 2:59Speaker 1: maxed out. I mean, she was stealing Lamborghinis. You know,
- 3:03Speaker 1: she's going She knew how to program stuff. She's a
- 3:06Speaker 1: hack hacker and very talented hackers. So when I when
- 3:09Speaker 1: I when I talk to you about tech, what level
- 3:11Speaker 1: of tech are you talking about? When I bring you
- 3:14Speaker 1: on my show. I focus mainly on consumer technology, so
- 3:18Speaker 1: the stuff that most people care about. You know, there
- 3:22Speaker 1: are a lot of different areas that you could focus on.
- 3:25Speaker 1: There's the whole silk in valley with startups and who
- 3:28Speaker 1: got funding and what series they and series B. There's
- 3:32Speaker 1: there's you know, um hardcore research topics in AI and um,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know, things like that. But I like to focus
- 3:41Speaker 1: on the things that nine percent of the population actually
- 3:45Speaker 1: cares about. You know, what phone should I get? What
- 3:49Speaker 1: apps should I download? To save some money or save
- 3:52Speaker 1: some time or be more productive during my day? What
- 3:56Speaker 1: can I do with my social media to not get fired?
- 3:59Speaker 1: Or how can I have a conversation with my children
- 4:02Speaker 1: so that they don't get jammed up on Instagram? You
- 4:05Speaker 1: know what I mean? Just those those those real world,
- 4:08Speaker 1: everyday things, Because you know, technology is everywhere we look,
- 4:13Speaker 1: It's infused into all of our daily lives. It changes constantly.
- 4:17Speaker 1: So I try to be the person that keeps up
- 4:20Speaker 1: with it so that you don't have to. Well, you
- 4:23Speaker 1: do a fantastic job. First of all, listen, Faith The
- 4:26Speaker 1: reason I excited me about bringing on the show the
- 4:29Speaker 1: first time was a similar path. You know, I worked
- 4:31Speaker 1: at IBM. Then I woke up one day and I
- 4:34Speaker 1: want you to know something. I want to go tell jokes.
- 4:36Speaker 1: I want to be a comedian. I wanted the something else.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But it was a lot of fear tied to that.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You know, the same thing with you. You've been a
- 4:42Speaker 1: lockeed engineer. Okay, you know that's that's the career lockkeeed
- 4:45Speaker 1: and engineered locked. That's where you want to be. You know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: that's where you want to be. And so how did
- 4:50Speaker 1: you just listen for my listeners and people who are
- 4:53Speaker 1: viewing us on moneyment on Facebook? What? What? What? What
- 4:56Speaker 1: enabled you to make that decision that I was ready
- 4:59Speaker 1: that God because I wasn't ready, but God was ready.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Uh So when when when he called, I answered? And
- 5:08Speaker 1: I did have a plan. So when when I made
- 5:11Speaker 1: the decision that you know what this is, this is
- 5:13Speaker 1: not for me. I want to go out here and
- 5:14Speaker 1: try to do this other thing. I did come up
- 5:17Speaker 1: with a plan and it took me. It took me
- 5:18Speaker 1: about two years to actually leave, from the time I
- 5:20Speaker 1: decided to leave to actually walking out the door for good.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It took like two years because there was a plan
- 5:27Speaker 1: that I had in place where I wanted to, uh,
- 5:31Speaker 1: you know, rearrange my financial situation, saved some money, you know,
- 5:35Speaker 1: that whole thing, get some more of those outside gigs
- 5:39Speaker 1: under my belt and regular clients. So I knew I
- 5:41Speaker 1: would be moving into a situation where I already had
- 5:45Speaker 1: work lined up. So you know, that whole process took
- 5:48Speaker 1: two years. And but once it was done, you know,
- 5:52Speaker 1: it was like, all right, well I've I've met all
- 5:55Speaker 1: the targets that I've said, so now it's time to go.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And it still was not without a ton of fear,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know that that day, um that that was my
- 6:04Speaker 1: last day. You know, it was just like it was.
- 6:08Speaker 1: It was very anxiety written and and and scary. But
- 6:13Speaker 1: you know, at some point you really do have to
- 6:15Speaker 1: they say it it's cliche, but you really do just
- 6:17Speaker 1: have to step out on faith, you really do. I
- 6:20Speaker 1: remember when I resigned from my BM, I did a
- 6:23Speaker 1: year in advance. So because it's it's if you're gonna
- 6:26Speaker 1: try to do it right, and you gotta, like you said,
- 6:28Speaker 1: there is faith, but there's also a plan tied to
- 6:30Speaker 1: the faith. Absolutely, absolutely that's the one year, and your
- 6:33Speaker 1: situated was two years, you know. So so I felt
- 6:37Speaker 1: my exit was a little bit quicker to yours because
- 6:39Speaker 1: I felt that, hey, I'm gonna book up these comedy
- 6:40Speaker 1: dates and I'm gonna go out there and just start
- 6:42Speaker 1: telling these jokes. And that's what I did. I just
- 6:44Speaker 1: booked like a series of joke. I had a manager
- 6:48Speaker 1: at the time, and then all of a sudden when
- 6:49Speaker 1: I resigned, and a sudden he decided he's gonna stop
- 6:51Speaker 1: managing me. So I was so again again, you just
- 6:55Speaker 1: never know, there's nothing guaranteed, at least a lot of
- 6:58Speaker 1: pretty much. That was a guaranteed check, and IBM, that
- 7:00Speaker 1: was a guaranteed check. And that's why I wanted people
- 7:03Speaker 1: to hear that before we started getting into the tech.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Talk about decisions, decision that you make, and people are
- 7:08Speaker 1: sitting on the they're sitting on the fence right now.
- 7:11Speaker 1: I don't like this job. And I'm not saying I
- 7:13Speaker 1: loved IBM, you know, and I'm sure you enjoyed working
- 7:16Speaker 1: in a key, but that just wasn't you. It just
- 7:19Speaker 1: wasn't me. And I and I saw or or he
- 7:22Speaker 1: showed me what else there was out there how I
- 7:26Speaker 1: could make a bigger impact, help more people. And it's like,
- 7:29Speaker 1: once you see it, you can't. It's like like the matrix,
- 7:32Speaker 1: like once you take the red till you know what
- 7:34Speaker 1: I mean, you can't. You can't go back to being
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, in the dark and and and ignorant about things.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So it's like once I saw it, it it was like, Okay,
- 7:41Speaker 1: this is what I gotta do. So let's just let's go.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Let's go and do it. Well, I'm on I'm on
- 7:45Speaker 1: the phone with the family grad. She's a family family
- 7:48Speaker 1: rather building allegetive to get a roller? Getting a rolling good.
- 7:54Speaker 1: When we'll be back when our next Greek We're gonna
- 7:56Speaker 1: find out about this tech talk because I got a
- 7:58Speaker 1: new phone. I'm not happy with my new phone, and
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm trying to find about brought the right phone. But
- 8:02Speaker 1: it guess what I need my phone. I've discovered that
- 8:04Speaker 1: it's changed my life since I've turned in my old phone.
- 8:07Speaker 1: And I won't tell you how the flip phone. A
- 8:08Speaker 1: couple of years ago, I was hanging in here. I
- 8:10Speaker 1: was hanging in there. We're back. It's definitely Humphrey money
- 8:14Speaker 1: making conversation. She tech talk tak talk big time. Rashan
- 8:18Speaker 1: McDonald speaking to you. Just ras Sean McDonald, you're listening
- 8:21Speaker 1: to money making conversation. I got it back after a
- 8:24Speaker 1: year of you know, just staying away from Rashwan. You know,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know, you know, you get people early in their career,
- 8:30Speaker 1: you know, and you help them launch their brain. I'm
- 8:32Speaker 1: gonna launch their brain. Then they blow up and then
- 8:34Speaker 1: you can't get them back on the phone. Well, I
- 8:36Speaker 1: got it back on the phone. She's one of the
- 8:37Speaker 1: top tech talkers in the country. Stephanie Humphrey, I you know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just playing with your regards still being
- 8:44Speaker 1: a hard guest the book, because you you know, you're
- 8:46Speaker 1: you're fantastic and you're taking the time to come back
- 8:49Speaker 1: on my show. I got a problem. Um. First of all,
- 8:52Speaker 1: going to uh you know, one of the cell phone
- 8:55Speaker 1: store is Fairy Popular Self Store, and I noticed they
- 8:58Speaker 1: still have flip phones. Who's using flip phones? They're making
- 9:02Speaker 1: flip thoes are making a comeback. Actually, the Motorola Razor,
- 9:05Speaker 1: I don't want to if you remember the razor had
- 9:09Speaker 1: love my razors, like three different razors. I love that.
- 9:13Speaker 1: That was the first texty phone, the or. It was
- 9:17Speaker 1: it was real nice. It was real sleek, and you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: it's like aesthetically it was just a nice looking phone. Um,
- 9:24Speaker 1: but they're bringing that back. I heard though that it
- 9:28Speaker 1: was going to cost like fifteen hundred dollars and I say, well,
- 9:32Speaker 1: now I ain't paying fea. I mean, although I do,
- 9:36Speaker 1: although I'm talking to you on the iPhone. Uh see,
- 9:39Speaker 1: were flip bones just seems a bit high. It was,
- 9:46Speaker 1: and and and and and if they if they can
- 9:48Speaker 1: do it to where they can incorporate all of the
- 9:51Speaker 1: features that you love about your smartphone into the razor
- 9:55Speaker 1: with a touch screen and all this other stuff, then
- 9:58Speaker 1: it might be worth it. I don't know, it might
- 9:59Speaker 1: be worth it back in the day. You know, you're
- 10:04Speaker 1: getting a little history there that looked at that mode,
- 10:06Speaker 1: so you kind of like putting the brand new technology
- 10:10Speaker 1: in the old old exactly. They probably would need to
- 10:13Speaker 1: make it a little bit bigger, just to get a
- 10:15Speaker 1: little bit bigger screen to have a touch screen situation happening.
- 10:18Speaker 1: But but if they can make that work, that actually
- 10:21Speaker 1: could be a good a good look for for Motorola.
- 10:24Speaker 1: Because that phone was so y'all. Let everybody the room
- 10:28Speaker 1: laughed at me when I said about flip phones in
- 10:30Speaker 1: the and the something well and then to like, uh,
- 10:36Speaker 1: everybody is working on some version of a foldable phone,
- 10:39Speaker 1: which I don't know necessarily is going to take off
- 10:42Speaker 1: very well. But but think about the phone you have
- 10:44Speaker 1: in your hand right now and being able to fold it,
- 10:47Speaker 1: like actually fold the screen in half, and you know,
- 10:50Speaker 1: have a have one size when you're using it when
- 10:53Speaker 1: it's folded, but then it opens up and it's more
- 10:56Speaker 1: sort of tablet size like many tablet size. Um, A
- 11:00Speaker 1: lot of companies are working on foldable phone technology as well.
- 11:03Speaker 1: So I don't have back pockets on my pains because
- 11:07Speaker 1: I don't like wallets. I just see that as a
- 11:10Speaker 1: fat wallet that I didn't want. What I but that's
- 11:12Speaker 1: why I passed on the will. I'm gonna stick it
- 11:14Speaker 1: out with my little Pixel now. I got my Pixel
- 11:16Speaker 1: phone here because they told me that I can take
- 11:19Speaker 1: great pictures. That did they get the right phone? The
- 11:23Speaker 1: Pixel is supposed to be the best on the market
- 11:26Speaker 1: right now for for the camera. If you got it
- 11:29Speaker 1: for the pictures, I think you got the right phone.
- 11:31Speaker 1: That that by all reviews that I've read, the Pixel
- 11:36Speaker 1: has the best phone on the best camera on the
- 11:38Speaker 1: market right now. Okay, cool, So that's what she sold me.
- 11:40Speaker 1: So but you know when you're going these stores now,
- 11:43Speaker 1: you know, especially they've got so many options. As a
- 11:46Speaker 1: person walking into a cell phone store, what tricks should
- 11:50Speaker 1: we avoid from the sales person, Well, you need to
- 11:54Speaker 1: have an idea of what you actually are going to
- 11:57Speaker 1: use the phone for. Um. That the first thing. That's
- 12:00Speaker 1: when that's especially buying a phone or buying a laptop
- 12:03Speaker 1: or something like that, you know, understand what you need
- 12:06Speaker 1: to use it for, um, And then you you're gonna
- 12:10Speaker 1: have to do a little bit of research to see
- 12:12Speaker 1: what sort of UM stats require that. So if you're
- 12:18Speaker 1: not doing like say you want to get a laptop,
- 12:20Speaker 1: if you're not gonna be doing any video editing, you know,
- 12:23Speaker 1: you don't need to walk in there and buy the
- 12:25Speaker 1: most expensive model unless that's just how you roll. So
- 12:29Speaker 1: you do have to do a little bit of research
- 12:31Speaker 1: and figure out, you know, as far as tears of
- 12:34Speaker 1: processing power, you know, storage space, just just have just
- 12:39Speaker 1: have a really and you really only need a basic
- 12:41Speaker 1: understanding of those things. Um, if you know you don't
- 12:44Speaker 1: use a lot of apps on your phone, or you
- 12:45Speaker 1: don't play any games, on your phone, or you're not gonna,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you know, watch Netflix on your phone, or you don't
- 12:50Speaker 1: watch a lot of YouTube videos. You probably don't need
- 12:53Speaker 1: the phone with more storage on it. You know, the
- 12:54Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty six gig memory phone. You can
- 12:58Speaker 1: probably get away with the sixty four gig memory phone.
- 13:00Speaker 1: So you know, it does require just a little bit
- 13:04Speaker 1: of understanding of what those numbers mean, and you know
- 13:08Speaker 1: what you want to do with your device. They'll try
- 13:11Speaker 1: to sell you the best at the top of the
- 13:13Speaker 1: line everything, you know what I mean, They're going to
- 13:15Speaker 1: try to sell you to most expense the phone, but
- 13:17Speaker 1: you know, you have to have a little bit of
- 13:18Speaker 1: an understanding of what you're gonna do um when you
- 13:21Speaker 1: get that device. Now, I went into the store and
- 13:23Speaker 1: it shocked me. Maybe it's just this this, this company
- 13:27Speaker 1: or this number one company out there. They told me
- 13:29Speaker 1: I couldn't buy my phone anymore. Let them do. Some
- 13:33Speaker 1: of them do have that kind They try to lock
- 13:35Speaker 1: you into that monthly you know contract, and and they
- 13:39Speaker 1: know they know everybody wants to upgrade. I don't know
- 13:43Speaker 1: that you should. You should be able to buy your phone.
- 13:46Speaker 1: If you want to buy a phone, you should be
- 13:48Speaker 1: able to walk into a store and buy a phone.
- 13:49Speaker 1: And if and if your carrier tells you that you can't,
- 13:52Speaker 1: then maybe go to a different carrier. Um, and don't
- 13:57Speaker 1: get bullied. Don't get bullied into that. I mean I
- 13:59Speaker 1: I I typically do kind of months because I've always
- 14:02Speaker 1: upbraid my phone. I was, you know what I do.
- 14:04Speaker 1: I need to have the latest and greatest tektok now tektalk.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Can't go around with the old phone, now you know,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I can't. I can't hand oplotball. So but but, but
- 14:16Speaker 1: but a carrier should not tell you can't buy a
- 14:18Speaker 1: phone like you can buy if you can buy the
- 14:20Speaker 1: phone online and then take it to your carrier and
- 14:23Speaker 1: have them turn it on. That's all that talk, that
- 14:26Speaker 1: mumbo jumbo talk that comes in there when you walk
- 14:29Speaker 1: in there going all these phones on the wall, different brands,
- 14:33Speaker 1: different things. But I, like you said, I went in.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I wanted the phone that took great pictures. So, like
- 14:38Speaker 1: you said, have a point of view when you go
- 14:40Speaker 1: on the store. So I got the phone, and you
- 14:42Speaker 1: assured me, Rashan, if you want a good phone taking pictures,
- 14:46Speaker 1: you got the right phone. Let's talk about all this
- 14:48Speaker 1: technology that you know, opening your garage door from your
- 14:52Speaker 1: phone or turning Yeah, the Internet of Things as they
- 14:57Speaker 1: call it, Okay, okay, what when when it is too much?
- 15:01Speaker 1: Too much? Because listen, I don't have any of that
- 15:05Speaker 1: stuff in my house because it's because of the privacy issues.
- 15:10Speaker 1: None of it is secure enough for me for my
- 15:14Speaker 1: comfort level. None of it is secure enough right now
- 15:17Speaker 1: to have in my house. And it's they're all listening
- 15:21Speaker 1: to everything you do. When you think about how much
- 15:24Speaker 1: information that Amazon Echo that Alexa has about you and
- 15:30Speaker 1: the fact that it's always listening, and there's been so
- 15:33Speaker 1: many issues where you know, it has sent something you
- 15:36Speaker 1: said to the wrong person because it was capturing your
- 15:40Speaker 1: conversation without you knowing, and different they're just it's just
- 15:44Speaker 1: that I just don't think the technology is uh stable
- 15:48Speaker 1: enough uh to ensure my privacy and my security in
- 15:52Speaker 1: my home. So you should once you have like an
- 15:54Speaker 1: Alexa room, you know, just just ruin with Alexa's in.
- 15:57Speaker 1: You know, there's Alexa back right and and listening to
- 16:01Speaker 1: air things. Now, if you just wanted to do something,
- 16:04Speaker 1: if you just wanted to do something like you know,
- 16:06Speaker 1: by smart lightbulbs and and and connect them to your
- 16:10Speaker 1: apps so you can turn your lights on and off
- 16:13Speaker 1: like something like that is not super um risky, but
- 16:18Speaker 1: you do want to have UM like the router that's
- 16:22Speaker 1: in your house that the that whoever you have your
- 16:24Speaker 1: internet through, you know, they brought that that little box
- 16:26Speaker 1: into your house that you connect your WiFi. UM. You
- 16:30Speaker 1: want to make sure that that password is really really
- 16:33Speaker 1: strong because that's how hackers get into all of those
- 16:37Speaker 1: connected devices. Like when you hear especially when you hear
- 16:39Speaker 1: about UM connected toys especially and those baby monitors in
- 16:44Speaker 1: babies room where people have hacked those baby monitors and
- 16:47Speaker 1: they're like watching your kids or listening in on your
- 16:50Speaker 1: kids and stuff like that. That's because the security of
- 16:53Speaker 1: those devices is so um low. That and then and
- 16:58Speaker 1: then the security on your router that that has your WiFi,
- 17:01Speaker 1: your password on your router isn't good, isn't strong, so
- 17:05Speaker 1: they it makes it really easy for them to get in.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So you know, when you when you have something like
- 17:10Speaker 1: I said, a connected light bulb, maybe a nest thermostat,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know, people like those thermostats now that you can control,
- 17:16Speaker 1: just make sure that the password on the router that
- 17:19Speaker 1: gives your house its WiFi is really really strong. Uh.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I know we run into closing out the show on time,
- 17:26Speaker 1: but I want to share this story. Uh Stephanie. Um,
- 17:30Speaker 1: when I got my arm my camera set on my house,
- 17:33Speaker 1: they had to go through. The tech guy came by
- 17:35Speaker 1: and they had to they had to find my house,
- 17:38Speaker 1: you know, through their system. And he went about, he
- 17:40Speaker 1: went through by ten homes. Nope, that's not you, that's
- 17:43Speaker 1: not me. And I went I saw it like my
- 17:45Speaker 1: ten home. I saw a couple of pocket parking, lots
- 17:49Speaker 1: of size some stores. So know that when you allow
- 17:52Speaker 1: people to turn on these cameras, they could come to
- 17:55Speaker 1: your house and just peeping tom if they want. And absolutely,
- 17:59Speaker 1: it's it's it's it's a convenience. We love it, but
- 18:02Speaker 1: it's but it's it's a risk to it's a risk too,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and and some people should understand that. So my all,
- 18:07Speaker 1: my all, my cameras face outside. There's no I don't
- 18:10Speaker 1: have a camera side of mouse. You're not gonna see
- 18:12Speaker 1: me doing nothing crazy one day, you know, falling asleep
- 18:15Speaker 1: with the door. Other than that, you can't see what's
- 18:19Speaker 1: happening inside the house outside. That got you on lockdown. Okay,
- 18:24Speaker 1: after lock that's define I think we run it out
- 18:26Speaker 1: of time here again, I want to bring you back
- 18:28Speaker 1: on the show just year next year. This is crazy,
- 18:33Speaker 1: this is I'm just talking to you and we've went
- 18:35Speaker 1: through this like twenty minutes of talk time here. This
- 18:37Speaker 1: is amazing. So we know that our relationship is eighteen
- 18:41Speaker 1: Can I bring you on like every quarter, every couple
- 18:44Speaker 1: of six months. Absolutely? Absolutely, whatever you need. Okay, good,
- 18:48Speaker 1: we have this relationship. Lock this down, just to be
- 18:51Speaker 1: back second quarter. Definitely. Huh tech talk queen called tech
