- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's word together. In Luke chapter 12, we see
- 0:45someone in the crowd that had been listening to Jesus ask
- 0:48Jesus to arbitrate a disagreement between him and his
- 0:51brother about their inheritance. The man says to Jesus, Teacher,
- 0:56tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.
- 0:59This man is hoping that Jesus, a righteous man with great
- 1:02authority and influence, will be able to persuade the man's
- 1:05brother to share his inheritance with him.
- 1:08As we have so often seen, however, Jesus does not bend to
- 1:11the will of the self seeking questioner.
- 1:14Listen to Jesus response in the rest of the passage.
- 1:17But he said to him, Man, who appointed me a judge or
- 1:20arbitrator over you? Then he said to them, beware and
- 1:23be on guard against every form of greed, for not even when one
- 1:27has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.
- 1:31And he told him a parable, saying the land of a rich man
- 1:34was very productive. And he began reasoning to
- 1:36himself, saying, what shall I do since I have no place to store
- 1:40my crops? Then he said, this is what I
- 1:43will do. I will tear down my barns and
- 1:45build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my
- 1:48goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul,
- 1:51you have many goods laid up for many years to come.
- 1:54Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.
- 1:57But God said to him, You fool, this very night your soul is
- 2:02required of you. And now who will own what you
- 2:04have prepared? So is the man who stores up
- 2:07treasure for himself and is not rich toward God as he so
- 2:11frequently does. Jesus gets right to the heart of
- 2:14the issue. This is not about fairness, this
- 2:17is not about justice. This is about greed.
- 2:20This is about whether or not wealth is going to have a
- 2:22stranglehold on this man who has been listening to Jesus.
- 2:26Jesus teaches this man and us that whether we be rich or poor,
- 2:30life is not about what we own. Life is not about our
- 2:34possessions or our bank accounts.
- 2:37In the parable Jesus tells we meet a man who has found his
- 2:40land to be very productive. So productive that he needs more
- 2:43room to store his produce. So he decides to tear down his
- 2:46barns and build bigger ones. Then he reasons with himself,
- 2:50he'll be able to take it easy for years to come.
- 2:52He'll be able to rest and enjoy life, eat, drink and be merry.
- 2:57But this man missed what the rest of life would really look
- 2:59like. In fact, his time was up.
- 3:02That very night he would die and all of those possessions he had
- 3:06stored up, all of that wealth he had amassed would be left.
- 3:10He could not take 1 penny with him to the grave.
- 3:13This man would find what the Book of James tells us to be
- 3:15true, that we are just a vapor that appears for a little while
- 3:19and then vanishes away. Now the issue with the man in
- 3:22the parable is not that his land was productive.
- 3:24It is not that he was wealthy. Instead, as Jesus says, the
- 3:28problem is that he had stored up treasures for himself, but had
- 3:31not been rich toward God. Here is one thing you can be
- 3:35sure of whether you're rich or poor.
- 3:38If you want to know how much of your wealth you will leave
- 3:40behind when you die, rest assured you will leave behind
- 3:43all of it. Money and earthly possessions
- 3:46can only be of value to us when we are living on earth.
- 3:50They can only be used or stewarded during the short vapor
- 3:53of a life. We can use them for ourselves,
- 3:56to eat, drink, and be merry, or we can use them for God.
- 4:01We can steward our resources as our Master intends, investing
- 4:05them in the Kingdom, using them to be a blessing to others.
- 4:08Or we can use them on our own selfish desires, investing them
- 4:13in our own temporal pleasures. Either way, you will not take
- 4:17any of it with you when you die, but you will give an account
- 4:21before God of how you stewarded what He entrusted to you.
- 4:24So how will He find you? Will he find you with
- 4:27storehouses of earthly treasure left behind and pour toward Him?
- 4:32Or will He find you rich toward Him, having invested His
- 4:35resources wisely as a faithful servant and steward?
- 4:39Do not let wealth pull you away from Jesus.
- 4:42Use what you've been given, be rich toward God, and invest in
- 4:47what is eternal rather than what is temporal and fading away.
