- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 10, Jesus comes
- 0:46to the House of a woman named Martha.
- 0:47We know that this Martha has a sister named Mary, who we'll
- 0:50meet in a second, and a brother named Lazarus, whose story we'll
- 0:53save for another day. What happens at Martha's house
- 0:57in Luke 10 May be a familiar story to you, but listen to what
- 1:00happens. I think there is a lot for us to
- 1:02take from it. Now as they were travelling
- 1:05along, he entered a village and a woman named Martha welcomed
- 1:08him into her home. She had a sister called Mary who
- 1:11was seated at the Lord's feet listening to his word.
- 1:14But Martha was distracted with all her preparations and she
- 1:17came up to him and said, Lord, do you not care that my sister
- 1:20has left me to do all the serving alone?
- 1:23Then tell her to help me. But the Lord answered and said
- 1:26to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so
- 1:29many things, but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has
- 1:34chosen the good part which shall not be taken away from her.
- 1:38So try to put yourself in the scene here.
- 1:40Martha has just welcomed Jesus into her home.
- 1:43There has never been a more honored guest to walk through
- 1:46her door. And not just Jesus, but his
- 1:48disciples too. All of the sudden her house is
- 1:51full of tired, hungry travellers and one of them is the Messiah.
- 1:57This has to be the most consequential hosting she has
- 2:00ever done. As someone taking hospitality
- 2:03seriously. This is Martha's Super Bowl and
- 2:06so we see her get distracted with all of her preparations.
- 2:09She was busy. Dinner for this group was not
- 2:12going to make itself. Then Martha starts to get
- 2:15frustrated. Not only is she busy working,
- 2:18but she sees that her sister Mary, who she thinks should be
- 2:21helping her with the preparation, is just sitting at
- 2:23the feet of Jesus listening to His words.
- 2:26Martha's reinforcements have bailed on her and she is alone
- 2:29at work. So Martha asked Jesus to
- 2:32arbitrate. She says to him, Lord, do you
- 2:35not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?
- 2:38Then tell her to help me. Surely Jesus will see it her
- 2:42way. It's obvious she thinks that
- 2:44Mary is neglecting her duties and needs to get back to work.
- 2:48But listen to Jesus response. Martha, Martha, you're worried
- 2:52and bothered about so many things, but only one thing is
- 2:55necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not
- 2:59be taken away from her. Jesus sees that the preparation
- 3:02is getting the best of Martha. He sees that she's worried.
- 3:05He sees that she is bothered. And what he points out is not
- 3:09that the work is bad or that serving is a waste of time.
- 3:12He doesn't scold her. He invites her into something
- 3:15better. Jesus points out to Martha the
- 3:18difference between working for the Lord and being with the
- 3:21Lord. Martha is fully engrossed in
- 3:24doing, in working, in laboring, and she is running out of fuel.
- 3:29Meanwhile, Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus, being filled
- 3:32up by his teaching and by his presence.
- 3:36She has chosen the necessary thing.
- 3:38That's the word Jesus uses to describe it.
- 3:41Necessary on a day when, to Martha, so many things seemed
- 3:45necessary. The cooking, the cleaning, the
- 3:47serving, the working. Jesus says there's only one
- 3:50thing that's necessary, one that is non negotiable and that is
- 3:54sitting at His feet. Work isn't bad.
- 3:58Serving isn't bad, diligence isn't bad.
- 4:01But don't miss the main thing, the necessary thing, the thing
- 4:05without which none of that serving or working will be
- 4:08possible. Don't miss the opportunity to
- 4:10sit in the presence of the Savior.
- 4:13Don't miss the opportunity to be filled up with His words, to be
- 4:16equipped and encouraged at His feet.
- 4:19And Jesus will certainly call you to work for him.
- 4:22But that work will be empowered, enlivened by His nearness, by
- 4:27our experience and intimacy with the life giving Savior.
- 4:31What are you worried and bothered by today?
- 4:35What is consuming your thoughts, your time, and your efforts?
- 4:39Whatever it is, don't miss what is necessary.
- 4:42Don't miss Jesus.
