- 0:35Hello, Travelers and Monster Catchers abound.
- 0:39I'm Stelliferous and you've crash -landed on
- 0:42the Monster Catchers Journal podcast. So, the
- 0:47sky above the crater of the echoing thoughts
- 0:51was warped, twisting with stormlight and static,
- 0:56like the world itself was having a panic attack.
- 0:59We'd followed the trail of black feathers and
- 1:01thorny vines for miles. each one humming with
- 1:05unease, or be flitted nervously on my shoulder,
- 1:11wings twitching with every gust of wind. Xena
- 1:14tightened her grip on Ignizura's reins, and Luna
- 1:17muttered something to Mirno in the estranged
- 1:20whisper language of hers. That's when we heard
- 1:24it. Laughter. Not joyous, not cruel, but shaky.
- 1:28Like someone giggling through a breakdown. From
- 1:30the crater's center rose a spiraling body covered
- 1:33in blinking, spiraling eyes. Two enormous wings
- 1:37spread out like a cathedral window, catching
- 1:42fire, and a wide grin split across its face.
- 1:51Spiked, sun -like rays jutted from its head,
- 1:54and its body slithered with nervous energy. It
- 1:59was thorn -edge. It billowed with a nervous twitch.
- 2:05I controlled anxiety. I can fly at you and drop
- 2:09thorns of anxiety on ya. Its laughter sent out
- 2:12pulses that made our thoughts blur. Doubts, worries,
- 2:16regrets. I saw flashes of every mistake I ever
- 2:19made. Every time I've hesitated. Every mission
- 2:24I'd second -guessed. But I'm Stella Ferris. I
- 2:28know what fear feels like, and I don't run. I
- 2:33summoned the calming light from my velstone,
- 2:38channeling it into a reflective barrier. We've
- 2:41all got anxiety, I said, but we don't let it
- 2:44drive. The barrier reflected its pulse back at
- 2:48it, its fears, its spiraling thoughts, and its
- 2:52faltered in midair. I don't. I don't want to
- 2:57hurt anyone. I just didn't want to be alone,"
- 2:59Thorn Edge whispered. That's when I stepped forward,
- 3:02holding out my hand. Then don't be. It spiraled
- 3:06down, gently, folding its wings around itself.
- 3:09I reached out, touched its head, and the glyph
- 3:13-bound bond sealed with a golden shimmer. The
- 3:17anxious laughter softened into a quiet hum. I
- 3:25thought that I had caught Thorn Edge in that
- 3:27moment, but he completely destroyed the glyphid,
- 3:31his spikes, pulsing out and shattering the glyphid
- 3:35into a million pieces. Thorn Edge flew up into
- 3:41the sky. And that's when I stepped forward, hand
- 3:47outstretched. Don't be afraid. But he spiraled
- 3:54down gently, folding his wings around himself,
- 3:59like a fallen angel. The storm ease, the static
- 4:03fell away, and I finally reached to touch his
- 4:06head, and that's when it snapped. Its grin didn't
- 4:11fade, it widened. The sudden whip of its body
- 4:14thorned, screamed. Not in fear, but in panic,
- 4:17fueled rage. A thousand thoughts hit us like
- 4:20daggers, and then, With one sickening lurch,
- 4:25its jagged, spiraled tail struck the capture
- 4:29glyphid behind me. Flash of light. A shattering
- 4:33sound like glass meeting eternity. The glyphid
- 4:36screamed and was gone. Shattered into a million
- 4:40fragments, up here veiled energy. No, I screamed,
- 4:43the bond fading before it could ever form. Senna
- 4:47and Luna shouted behind me. Too late. Thorn Edge
- 4:51hovered above, panting heavily, its spiraling
- 4:56eyes darting in every direction. I didn't mean
- 4:58to. I didn't, it cried. I didn't want it to go
- 5:02away. I just, why does everything leave? I stared
- 5:07up at it, stunned, heart pounding, my thoughts
- 5:09a thunderstorm, and then I understood. Thorn
- 5:15Edge hadn't calmed down. It had suppressed the
- 5:18panic long enough to get close, and when it felt
- 5:21safe, the fear exploded. It wasn't ready to bond,
- 5:24not yet. I stepped back, fell stone, glowing
- 5:27dimly in my palm. Retreat, I whispered. This
- 5:30isn't a win, not today. We went back the following
- 5:38Vathan, which is the word for weekend on my planet.
- 5:46The crater was quieter this time, no static,
- 5:49no pulsing laughter, just the wind whispering
- 5:51through the broken glyphstones like it was trying
- 5:54to remember a song. Xena stayed behind at the
- 5:58ridge with Ignizura. Luna walked halfway with
- 6:01me, then stopped me and her, curling around her
- 6:03legs like a watchful shadow. I think he's waiting
- 6:06for you, Luna whispered. She was right. Thorn
- 6:10Edge was already there, hovering. Not circling,
- 6:12not spinning, just waiting. Like he'd known all
- 6:16along, the last time wasn't the last time. His
- 6:19spiral body drooped low, not in aggression, but
- 6:24exhaustion. The golden spines on his back were
- 6:27dull, like fear had worn him thin. I thought
- 6:30I broke everything, he said. I didn't want to
- 6:32be seen again, but I couldn't stop hoping you'd
- 6:35come back. I stepped into the crater alone, heart
- 6:38racing, but this time not from fear, from understanding.
- 6:42You didn't break everything, I said. You only
- 6:44proved yourself still hurting. He blinked slowly.
- 6:48The thousands of spiraling eyes along his body
- 6:53didn't flicker with panic this time. They shimmered,
- 6:57reflecting me. Not a threat, not a savior, just
- 7:01me. He lowered his head. If I try again, will
- 7:07you let me? This time I didn't reach out first.
- 7:11I waited. and thorn -edged trembling, terrified
- 7:14and brave reached for me. The glyph -bond flared
- 7:18into existence like a meteor bursting open a
- 7:21dark sky, but it was different, not gold, silver,
- 7:25the color of healing, of second chances, of starlight
- 7:29and deep water. His spiraling form hovered inches
- 7:36above the crater floor, wings slack, like even
- 7:38gravity didn't know what to do with him. For
- 7:41a long time neither of us spoke. I could feel
- 7:44it, the pain he carried, not just fear, but layers
- 7:48of it, abandonment, failure, regret, years of
- 7:50spiraled thoughts twisted so tight around his
- 7:54core that he probably forgot what it felt like
- 7:57to just exist without them. I don't want to be
- 8:00a storm anymore, he said quietly. You don't have
- 8:03to, I replied. There was no dramatic flash, no
- 8:06heroic music. No last -minute charge, just stillness
- 8:10and choice. When he leaned forward, every feather
- 8:14on his massive wings trembled. He was terrified,
- 8:18but he still chose to trust me. My fingers brushed
- 8:22against his head and something shifted, not violently,
- 8:26not all at once. It was like a knot slowly undoing
- 8:30itself after being pulled tight for too long.
- 8:35He let out a sound I hadn't heard from him before.
- 8:40Not laughter, not a scream, a sigh, a long and
- 8:43shaking sigh, like he'd been holding his breath
- 8:47for years. And just like that, the thorns began
- 8:53to fall, not shattered, not torn out. They loosened,
- 8:58one by one, gently like petals dropping from
- 9:02a flower that had been clenched in the winter.
- 9:06His spirals, once erratic and jittering, with
- 9:10tension, slowed into a peaceful rhythm. The eyes
- 9:14across his body no longer darted and blinked
- 9:17with panic. They closed in relief. He was finally
- 9:20still. I felt the bond really form, not a temporary
- 9:26connection, not something forced by battle or
- 9:28desperation. This was earned, chosen, shared.
- 9:32For the first time, Thorn Edge wasn't trying
- 9:34to protect me from his pain. He was letting me
- 9:38stand with him inside it, and together we walked
- 9:41out of it. He stayed close afterwards, not because
- 9:45he had to, but because he wanted to. When he
- 9:48flew beside me, there was no anxious circling.
- 9:51When he spoke, his voice didn't shake. When he
- 9:54rested, his wings tucked gently around his body
- 9:56like a nest, no longer a shield. And once, while
- 10:01we sat on the ridge, as the stars blinked overhead,
- 10:05he looked up and whispered, I think I like who
- 10:08I am now. So do I. But now it came the time to
- 10:14take Thorn Edge back to my sanctuary house. The
- 10:18gateway shimmered behind us, closing with a soft
- 10:21chime of starlight as we stepped through. My
- 10:24sanctuary, our sanctuary, welcomed us. With its
- 10:28usual hush of peace, the glow of lantern, light
- 10:32flickering through hanging vines, crystals humming
- 10:36gently in the ceiling beams, thorn -edge hovered
- 10:39in the threshold, just inside the threshold of
- 10:43the pyramid -shaped home. He didn't say anything
- 10:46at first, he just looked. His massive wings curled
- 10:49in close to his body as if afraid to knock something
- 10:52over. The silver spirals, on his form, dimmed
- 10:56to a soft glow like moonlight on water. It's
- 10:59okay, I said, reaching up to lightly touch his
- 11:03head, or the edge of his wings. You're safe here.
- 11:08He nodded slowly, but I could tell safe was still
- 11:12a new word for him, or a beak chirped from the
- 11:15rafters, feathers puffed proudly, Santa peeked
- 11:19from the second -floor balcony, giving Thornedge
- 11:23a small approving nod. Luna stood near the mirno
- 11:28perched to like a sleepy guardian at her feet.
- 11:32Thorn edge drifted forward, careful not to let
- 11:35his feather tips graze the crystal shelves lining
- 11:39the walls. He paused when he saw a mirror hanging
- 11:42in the hallway, an old one I'd picked up from
- 11:45a vell market, its surface rippling faintly.
- 11:49He stared at his reflection, then he said softly,
- 11:52I don't look scared here. I walked up beside
- 11:55him, you never were. You just didn't know where
- 11:58you belonged. His spiraling eyes blinked, and
- 12:04this place lets me. I smiled, if it wants you.
- 12:10He followed me into the heart room, where each
- 12:15glyph has their resting space, which had nests
- 12:18of stone, others mossy stones, suspended hammocks,
- 12:22or pools of light. I showed him his. It wasn't
- 12:28big, just a quiet hollow line with soft clouds
- 12:32and spiral -shaped stones. A warm breeze gently
- 12:36circling above it, a place made for him, a reflection
- 12:40of his true form calmer, kinder. He hovered above
- 12:43it for a moment, then slowly descended. Letting
- 12:46his wings fold fully for the first time, since
- 12:50I'd met him, he curled up beside the hollow,
- 12:52his spiraled tail gently circling his body. A
- 12:58sigh escaped him, peaceful this time. I didn't
- 13:02think I'd ever sleep again, he said. You're home
- 13:06now, I told him. No one's afraid of you here.
- 13:09There was a long silence and a voice so small
- 13:12I almost didn't hear it. Not even me. That night
- 13:16I stayed nearby, just in case, but Thorn Edge
- 13:19didn't spiral. He didn't twist, twitch, or shake,
- 13:24or hum with panic. He dreamed. And in the morning,
- 13:28when I woke up, he was already waiting near the
- 13:30kitchen trying to brew tea, using only the warmth
- 13:34of his feathers. It was a disaster, but we laughed,
- 13:38and it was perfect. I helped him to brew his
- 13:42tea. The tea was bitter, too many star flower
- 13:45petals, not enough bellroot. Thornedge had tried
- 13:48to swirl the ingredients into place with his
- 13:50feathers, but they got tangled in the steam and
- 13:55he panicked mid -brew. Still, I helped him fix
- 13:58it. We added a drop of honey -vine syrup, a pinch
- 14:02of solar bark. He stirred with the tip of his
- 14:05spiral tail. far more careful this time. When
- 14:09he poured it into mismatched ceramic mugs, one
- 14:13chipped, one glittering faintly like a comet,
- 14:18it wasn't perfect. But it was warm and real.
- 14:22We took our cups and stepped outside. The front
- 14:24porch creaked gently beneath us. Lined with climbing
- 14:27vines and hanging chimes, shaped like drifting
- 14:30moons, the air smelled like soft lighting in
- 14:34morning dew. Marino coiled under the rail, already
- 14:38dozing. Ignisura let out a distant snort of contentment
- 14:43from Xena's window. And above us, the sky didn't
- 14:47move. It never did. Two suns and three moons.
- 14:56frozen in their celestial dance. The golden suns
- 15:00lit the eastern edge of the sky, casting honey
- 15:03-like over the trees. The blue suns, or the blue,
- 15:09the red, and the green suns shimmered near the
- 15:11clouds, stuck in eternal dusk. The red one pulsed
- 15:16softly, giving everything a quiet warmth. And
- 15:21the moon that's blue and full, watched over it
- 15:27like a keeper of secrets, while the green one
- 15:31just sat there. Thornhead stared in awe, steam
- 15:36curling from his mug like a wisp of his old self,
- 15:40finally let go. The sky, he whispered, it doesn't
- 15:46change. No, I said, but it still shines. He sipped
- 15:50his tea carefully, holding the mug with three
- 15:53spiral -wrapped feathers. I used to think I needed
- 15:56this guy to move, that if it stayed still I'd
- 15:59get stuck. I looked at him, and now? He looks
- 16:02back, eyes soft, now? I think it's okay to rest
- 16:07where things feel safe. We didn't speak for a
- 16:11while after that, we just sat. Me with my hands
- 16:15wrapped around my mug, Thorn Edge humming quietly,
- 16:18his spirals not spinning, but pulsing gently.
- 16:22Like that. of the soft tide of a heartbeat. The
- 16:27sun stayed right where they were, the moon watched,
- 16:30and for once neither of us needed to pass. We
- 16:34had not now, and now was enough. I took a larger
- 16:44sip of tea, bittersweet, earthy and still steaming,
- 16:48just enough to fog the edge of my mug. So thorn
- 16:51-edged, I said, keeping my voice light, I was
- 16:54thinking maybe sometime we could visit the verdant
- 16:56market, you know, grab a few things for your
- 16:58space in the sanctuary." He blinked, spiraling
- 17:01eyes, focusing slowly, thoughtfully. For my space,
- 17:05he asked, as if the idea still surprised him.
- 17:08You mean like pillows? I smiled him into my cup.
- 17:12Sure, if you want. Or some calming stones. Or
- 17:15wind bells. Or maybe one of those bio -light
- 17:19mushrooms that flicker like dreams. The market
- 17:22always has weird stuff. He tilted his head, feathers
- 17:26gently shifting like leaves in wind. I've never
- 17:30shopped before. You're not missing much, I teased,
- 17:34unless you love hanging with bark -skinned goblins
- 17:38over fungus. Start haggling with bark -skinned
- 17:42goblins over fungus prices. That earned a soft
- 17:47snort. from him a laugh even the spirals on his
- 17:50body gave a gentle flicker of silver brighter
- 17:54than before i think i'd like that he said finally
- 17:57having things not just armor and spikes but things
- 18:02i chose things that are mine exactly i said you've
- 18:07carved out a space here thorn edge might as well
- 18:10decorate it he looked out toward the horizon
- 18:13again the sun hadn't shifted They never would.
- 18:17The moons hadn't blinked. They never would. But
- 18:20something in him had something subtle and sacred.
- 18:24After a pause, he whispered, do they sell mirrors
- 18:27there? Ones that don't show you what you were,
- 18:32but what you're becoming? I glanced at him, then
- 18:37leaned my shoulders into his, warm and steady.
- 18:41They might, and if not, we'll make one. He didn't
- 18:43answer right away, but... He leaned back into
- 18:46me, just slightly spirals resting easy for the
- 18:50first time in a long time, and together we kept
- 18:53sipping our tea, bathed in the soft light of
- 18:56the unmoving heavens, making quiet plans for
- 18:59the future Thornedge had never thought he'd have.
- 19:06The mugs were now nearly empty. The sky hadn't
- 19:09changed, but something in the air felt different,
- 19:12softer, like the world had leaned in to listen.
- 19:17Thorn -Edge was quiet, feathers gently shifting
- 19:20in the breeze. Spirals no longer spun out of
- 19:24control. They pulsed with a rhythm that felt
- 19:28almost peaceful. I turned towards him, watching
- 19:31the way the tease warmth still curled from his
- 19:35breath. Then I said it, not dramatically, not
- 19:39with ceremony, but simply and from the heart.
- 19:43Thank you, Thornedger, my newest friend, and
- 19:45I'll cherish you. For a moment I thought he might
- 19:48spiral again, not from panic, but from emotion
- 19:51too big to hold. But instead his glow brightened,
- 19:55soft, silver, shimmering across his wings, a
- 20:00few feathers floating gently to the porch floor
- 20:03like falling stars. I've never been cherished
- 20:08before, he said, voice thick with wonder, not
- 20:11like this. You are now I said welcome home. He
- 20:15tucked one long wing gently around his back Or
- 20:20around my back carefully gently like he was learning
- 20:23what it meant to hold instead of protect And
- 20:27in the frozen sky in the unmoving moment we sat
- 20:30together two beings who had both spiraled Now
- 20:35still now safe and now friends And that, my friends,
- 20:42is another story and another episode. I will
- 20:48see you next time. May the gods of Nibiru shine
- 20:52their light down on you. Thank you. Goodbye.
