- 1:48Speaker 1: It's what he likes to share. Now it's time to
- 1:50Speaker 1: hear from my man, Rashan McDonald Money Making Conversations. Here
- 1:54Speaker 1: we come. My next guest is Kenned for Read. He's
- 1:58Speaker 1: a professional basketball player, something I could never do. I
- 2:01Speaker 1: always dreamed of being in the league, but all I
- 2:03Speaker 1: can do is watch being in the league. He's with
- 2:05Speaker 1: the Demon Nuggets, Brooklyn next Houston Rockets. From a span
- 2:08Speaker 1: of eight years from twenty eleven to twenty and eighteen.
- 2:11Speaker 1: He also will spend time in China. We'll talking about
- 2:14Speaker 1: that in part of his interview serial Entrepreneurship is His?
- 2:17Speaker 1: Is His? His foundation I'd like to talk about. He's
- 2:19Speaker 1: the founder of the Kenneth for Reed HAT Foundation, which
- 2:22Speaker 1: stands for Humble, Appreciative and Thankful. Kenneth is a video gamer.
- 2:27Speaker 1: He stated, I got into gaming because of my dad,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and weirdly enough, because of my mom. My mom and
- 2:32Speaker 1: dad are both Xbox gamers. He's pretty good at it
- 2:35Speaker 1: because at Fortnite and the Charitable Foundation he was able
- 2:38Speaker 1: to win two hundred and fifty thousan dollars in prize money,
- 2:41Speaker 1: which had to be used for a charitable purpose. He
- 2:44Speaker 1: finished second and got two hundred fifty thou dollars, which
- 2:47Speaker 1: launched his foundation, the Humble, Appreciative and Thankful Foundation, which
- 2:51Speaker 1: stands for HAT. Kennada is definitely more than the athlete.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Like I teached him about it earlier, because I saw
- 2:56Speaker 1: him in the Body issue with ESPN, I guess he's
- 2:59Speaker 1: shown a little bit more of his athleticism. Okay, conversation,
- 3:04Speaker 1: my man, kenn It free, how you Ken? Thank you?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Thank you? I'm excited. I'm excited to be here. Uh,
- 3:11Speaker 1: this is a great opportunity for me, I just as
- 3:14Speaker 1: a person and as a man, and to be up
- 3:17Speaker 1: here with I mean no other than for Sean. I
- 3:20Speaker 1: mean this, this is love right here. Well it is
- 3:22Speaker 1: love because you know, I always like to bring individuals
- 3:25Speaker 1: on like you, because you can get stereotyped and and uh,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, and when I say stereotyping, stereo talking people
- 3:32Speaker 1: for being a black man. You can stereotype a tall
- 3:34Speaker 1: black man. You can stereotype being an athlete, which can
- 3:37Speaker 1: come into play about your intelligence. Come to that's all
- 3:40Speaker 1: you can do. How do you deal with I mentioned
- 3:43Speaker 1: several I depended being a black man. I've been being
- 3:46Speaker 1: a tall person. I've been an athlete. Which one do
- 3:48Speaker 1: you want to come in first? Being stereotyped because there's
- 3:51Speaker 1: three of them. I know you can stereotype though, Well
- 3:55Speaker 1: it's only because of course, you know my persona of
- 3:59Speaker 1: my hair goes with it. Um people assume is hey,
- 4:05Speaker 1: you're tall, You're you're also black. Hunty to be honest, like,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you're tall, you're black, You're you got this athletic build
- 4:14Speaker 1: about you and your handsome so I'm assuming you you
- 4:18Speaker 1: play basketball and football. But yeah, that's pretty much um
- 4:22Speaker 1: the stereotype of my whole life. Man. For me, I've
- 4:25Speaker 1: been dealing with that and I just take it with
- 4:28Speaker 1: a grain of salt. Sometimes I like to play a
- 4:29Speaker 1: little games for people like, oh, no, I'm not him,
- 4:31Speaker 1: I'm actually play lacross. I'm not that guy. Actually I
- 4:36Speaker 1: actually played on soccer. You know, I'm a goalie for
- 4:39Speaker 1: Manchester United. But I just like the best with people
- 4:43Speaker 1: so tall. But at the same token as a blessing
- 4:46Speaker 1: and the curse, you know, you God put you on
- 4:49Speaker 1: this earth and gave these blessings and you either you
- 4:53Speaker 1: either use them to your advantage or you take it
- 4:56Speaker 1: as all white me, white me. And I've never been
- 4:59Speaker 1: a person who's say why me, always said try me right.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You know, it's really interesting because of the fact that
- 5:05Speaker 1: you know your athleticism, you'll bill forced you in a direction,
- 5:09Speaker 1: and there some words I would apologize. I won't use
- 5:11Speaker 1: the word force, but it tends to put you in
- 5:13Speaker 1: the direction of expectations, you know, like you know, when
- 5:16Speaker 1: you when you're a smart person, intelligence isn't isn't isn't
- 5:19Speaker 1: written on your face isn't written in your abs, just
- 5:22Speaker 1: isn't written in your height. It's just you have to
- 5:24Speaker 1: show people that you're intelligent. Do you feel that because
- 5:27Speaker 1: of your bill, that you you have to show people
- 5:30Speaker 1: that you're more than an athlete, that you can do more,
- 5:32Speaker 1: that you're capable of achieving things beyond the basketball court. Yeah,
- 5:37Speaker 1: a hundred percent. Um. But one thing my parents was
- 5:41Speaker 1: blessed to. I was blessed to. I guess reciprocate when
- 5:45Speaker 1: they was telling me back in the day, because they
- 5:47Speaker 1: told me a lot. So it was one thing they
- 5:49Speaker 1: always said, to use what you got to your advantage.
- 5:53Speaker 1: And I always wonder what they mean by that when
- 5:56Speaker 1: I was younger. But as I got older and flew
- 5:58Speaker 1: into the man I am today, I just understood it
- 6:01Speaker 1: more and more. And I'm thirty one today my parents
- 6:04Speaker 1: use like I said. I was younger, they told me
- 6:06Speaker 1: a lot. But now that I'm thirty one and I
- 6:09Speaker 1: understood what they meant, Hey, I have a chance here
- 6:13Speaker 1: just because I'm tall and because I'm black and people
- 6:16Speaker 1: see my athleticism and all that stuff. To use that
- 6:18Speaker 1: to my advantage. So I went to more Head State. Yeah,
- 6:21Speaker 1: everybody expecting me not even make it to the NBA.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But I use it to my advantage. I said, hey,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I'm here, I might as well keep going graduate, get
- 6:30Speaker 1: my education, show other people in my family. Not just
- 6:35Speaker 1: like I didn't really care about the outside world in
- 6:37Speaker 1: the sense of the public thought about me. I only
- 6:39Speaker 1: cared about my family and what they thought. And it was, Hey,
- 6:42Speaker 1: I want to show my family and have a eleven
- 6:45Speaker 1: year old now I had her my junior in college
- 6:47Speaker 1: named Kira On Free. I want to show her. Hey,
- 6:51Speaker 1: just because daddy is in the n b A, he
- 6:55Speaker 1: doesn't mean you can't graduate, get your degree, become that
- 7:00Speaker 1: that pillar of foundation from your family, from not just
- 7:04Speaker 1: a financial aspect, but a mental aspect, because you have
- 7:08Speaker 1: to be intelligent with the money. You can't just have
- 7:10Speaker 1: it and go, Okay, I got money, spend it foolers. Free,
- 7:14Speaker 1: Oh get this person to house, get this person to car,
- 7:17Speaker 1: and all this stuff. No, you gotta understand that, Hey,
- 7:20Speaker 1: that wealth last you for that amount of time. Right
- 7:23Speaker 1: then and there, You're making that much money because you're
- 7:26Speaker 1: because of your talents and athleticism. But what are you
- 7:29Speaker 1: going to do after? Right? Right? But you know it's interesting, Kennon,
- 7:33Speaker 1: because you know, I've been fortunate in my life, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: because when you're in entertainment, it's kind of like athleticism.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Income can come in and large amounts, and sometimes you
- 7:43Speaker 1: don't know what to do with that large amount. And
- 7:45Speaker 1: sometimes it comes like, oh, I just get this, you know,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I just leased this, you know, and but you don't
- 7:50Speaker 1: think any thing of it, because guess what, You're able
- 7:52Speaker 1: to buy it. You're able to purchase, You're able to
- 7:55Speaker 1: live that lifestyle. But then, like you said earlier in
- 7:57Speaker 1: your conversation, is about longevity because you're not on the
- 8:00Speaker 1: play forever and that big check needs to need to
- 8:03Speaker 1: go down the line at least twenty thirty years. That's
- 8:05Speaker 1: the process, you know. But you're a young guy. You're
- 8:07Speaker 1: thirty one now. Now this is where athleticism and then
- 8:12Speaker 1: longevity comes into play, because I know when I was
- 8:14Speaker 1: a team, thirty was a long railway. Forty I could
- 8:17Speaker 1: even imagine forty fifty. Come on, dude, really you're talking
- 8:21Speaker 1: about So we did the process of being thirty one
- 8:26Speaker 1: and become a reality to you. Um, it just became
- 8:30Speaker 1: a reality this I mean, it's COVID pandemic hit, you know. Um,
- 8:36Speaker 1: for me, I was in my twenties and the NBA
- 8:41Speaker 1: enjoying life, having fun. By the same token, just making
- 8:44Speaker 1: a little smart investments here and there, like my manumal
- 8:47Speaker 1: Elite that's where I'm wearing right now and shirt my
- 8:50Speaker 1: AU team made an investment in that, and that's through
- 8:53Speaker 1: the like you said earlier, Kenning Free Hat Foundation. So
- 8:56Speaker 1: it was a blessing to be able to have that
- 8:59Speaker 1: on my I guess, a patch on my shoulder, like, hey,
- 9:03Speaker 1: this is something I've done, this is something I build
- 9:06Speaker 1: in Now, I guess h I believe it's nine years later, Yeah,
- 9:10Speaker 1: nine years later, but to be ten years next summer.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Nine years later, I still have it up and running
- 9:15Speaker 1: every The kids are un tremendous job of promoting the brand,
- 9:20Speaker 1: being part of the brand and really understanding what the
- 9:23Speaker 1: brand means. And that's just being a hat, being humble,
- 9:28Speaker 1: appreciate and thankful. And that's my biggest I guess, my
- 9:33Speaker 1: biggest chip on my shoulder. I always been humble, appreciate
- 9:36Speaker 1: and thankful for anything. Really, really you've been You've been humble?
- 9:40Speaker 1: Now you could, I could. I gotta stop you that.
- 9:43Speaker 1: If anybody just to start just just google the body
- 9:47Speaker 1: issue Okay, definitely got to stop him on his humble talk.
- 9:50Speaker 1: See I know for a fact, I know for a fact.
- 9:54Speaker 1: See I wouldn't even gonna go there. But he keeps
- 9:56Speaker 1: throwing out the word humble. But you know I'm humble.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I'm humble, I'm humble. Uh So how does that? Because
- 10:03Speaker 1: I'm just having fun with you, Cannon, because I love
- 10:05Speaker 1: you to death. Man, we're talking about Well, I gotta
- 10:08Speaker 1: be able to slide this into the conversation because you
- 10:11Speaker 1: did it. You didn't, I didn't. I didn't force you
- 10:14Speaker 1: to do it. Nobody told you. Hey man, you wouldn't
- 10:16Speaker 1: be naked. And then how some people put some hot
- 10:19Speaker 1: little basketball on certain parts of your body and you
- 10:22Speaker 1: jump up and down and we will put in the
- 10:24Speaker 1: magazine how how that sounded? Was that a hard pitch, Cannon?
- 10:27Speaker 1: Or was that a picture? You just? Oh, I got
- 10:29Speaker 1: this covered? You saw earlier dishes? You go, man, why
- 10:32Speaker 1: they ain't picked me yet? How I talk about that
- 10:35Speaker 1: whole journey that, Kenny, Because see I know you did
- 10:38Speaker 1: some again. You're in NBA, somebod I can never do
- 10:41Speaker 1: you in the body issue again. Something I can never do,
- 10:44Speaker 1: but talk about your humbleness in doing the body issue
- 10:48Speaker 1: of ESPN. Okay, well, I guess it's not. I guess
- 10:56Speaker 1: I can't. I'm so confused, right, it's hard to say,
- 11:01Speaker 1: you know. I went out there. It was funny because
- 11:05Speaker 1: my my rookie year in the league. Basically I saw
- 11:09Speaker 1: the body issue and I saw ESPN. I saw the
- 11:11Speaker 1: SPS Awards, and I saw all that beautiful stuff, and
- 11:14Speaker 1: I said, hey, that's the body issue, and whoa, these
- 11:18Speaker 1: people are really naked. I love to be naked. I
- 11:21Speaker 1: love to be free. I want to do that. It
- 11:23Speaker 1: looks like all right, So I didn't think of it
- 11:26Speaker 1: as Okay, you have to be naked and your body
- 11:30Speaker 1: be basically showing all your stuff off. I thought, maybe
- 11:33Speaker 1: you be like naked, but you you're covered in certain
- 11:37Speaker 1: areas right right, right right, But no, you just free.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And I was like, wow, okay, I'm ready, Hey here
- 11:47Speaker 1: do this. I'm not gonna be afraid. And it was
- 11:50Speaker 1: the second year. Um, they basically said, hey you, we'll
- 11:55Speaker 1: we'll love to have you. Um there's a lot of
- 11:57Speaker 1: other players that's gonna be in it. But all you
- 12:00Speaker 1: gotta do, all you have to do is just play.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Play in the playoffs, like have your team make the
- 12:07Speaker 1: playoffs and that was my second and n b A
- 12:10Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh, WHOA, We're going to do that.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I want to make sure that whatever I gotta do,
- 12:17Speaker 1: And there's just so happened. We made the playoffs and
- 12:22Speaker 1: he was the third seed and we lost the Words
- 12:25Speaker 1: that year. But I guess I made an impact and
- 12:29Speaker 1: the image for myself for the rest of my life.
- 12:32Speaker 1: It's finally here, the season of celebration, and no matter
- 12:35Speaker 1: how you celebrate with family and friends, whether you're preparing

- 14:19Speaker 1: Navigating Adoption presented by adopt Us Kids, brought to you
- 14:22Speaker 1: by the U S Department of Health and Human Services,
- 14:24Speaker 1: Administration for Children and Families and the council. You did,
- 14:28Speaker 1: Kenny f Read you know, uh, but it isn't a
- 14:30Speaker 1: good way because it's part of your brand, you know,
- 14:32Speaker 1: because you know, Lord knows, you know, you're using your
- 14:35Speaker 1: second year. So I know the players on the court
- 14:38Speaker 1: gave you a hard time. I find a hard time
- 14:40Speaker 1: about that when they were guarding you and all that
- 14:41Speaker 1: stuff and warm ups and all that stuff. So I
- 14:44Speaker 1: know they've taken care of you. But what I love
- 14:46Speaker 1: about you, man, is that there is a position that
- 14:49Speaker 1: people do in life where they stopped themselves. They say
- 14:52Speaker 1: they don't want to do something, They worry about what
- 14:54Speaker 1: people think and and it's but it's all part of
- 14:57Speaker 1: a brand build, you know, as part of your personnel.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Like you said, you know, you're tall, you're black, your hairstyle,
- 15:02Speaker 1: you're a good looking guy. So that's part of being
- 15:05Speaker 1: a I think it's just like being a model. You know,
- 15:08Speaker 1: you are you. You can't be a model, you know,
- 15:10Speaker 1: and that there's no doubt in my mind. But that's
- 15:13Speaker 1: that's physical, you know. You know the thing about being physical,
- 15:17Speaker 1: there's always a time living on being physical. And so
- 15:20Speaker 1: that's what we said right now, you know, because of
- 15:22Speaker 1: COVID and you went over to China, and and that
- 15:25Speaker 1: to extend your basketball career, because I guess what they
- 15:27Speaker 1: write nice checks over in China by the way, y'all okay,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and uh and so and so. Now you're back at
- 15:34Speaker 1: home right now. What is it from a physical standpoint?
- 15:37Speaker 1: Do you stand with your career? I know you still
- 15:40Speaker 1: stand in shape. Is a stand in shape to continue
- 15:42Speaker 1: a basketball career or you're ready to move on? Um?
- 15:47Speaker 1: I'm standing in shape because I want to get back
- 15:48Speaker 1: into the NBA. UM. I'm pushing myself and doing things
- 15:53Speaker 1: that pretty much got me there and just standing focused
- 15:57Speaker 1: like that and not letting the outside distracts. And UM,
- 16:01Speaker 1: I have fun in my twenties pretty much. And it
- 16:04Speaker 1: was it was nice, you know, I enjoyed it. Me
- 16:07Speaker 1: going over to China was also a blessing. Um, most people,
- 16:11Speaker 1: we wouldn't see that as that because of the fact
- 16:14Speaker 1: that it did kind of stop me from going to
- 16:16Speaker 1: the NBA with the bubble and everything. It kind of
- 16:19Speaker 1: holding me from that decision, even though I got out
- 16:23Speaker 1: of it early. But COVID protocols and the way he
- 16:26Speaker 1: was setting up things that just wasn't letting fever players in.
- 16:28Speaker 1: So I just respected that and had to respect it.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And I just put my acts pretty much to the
- 16:33Speaker 1: ground and showed everybody why they called me manimal and
- 16:36Speaker 1: why everybody say, hey, this kid never stopped working. He's
- 16:39Speaker 1: a worker, he's he's this, he's that. He give it
- 16:43Speaker 1: his all every time you step on the court. And
- 16:45Speaker 1: that's truly who I am. And I just wanted to
- 16:47Speaker 1: show everybody that and remind everybody that, and slowly but
- 16:51Speaker 1: surely people want to see it. People are going to
- 16:54Speaker 1: see it. Well, I have no doubt about it. But
- 16:57Speaker 1: you've always been had a life where you know, you
- 16:59Speaker 1: want to find start athletes coming out of high school.
- 17:02Speaker 1: You know you more head stayed, you finished your career
- 17:05Speaker 1: as at all time rebounding broke. I think Tim Duncan's
- 17:07Speaker 1: record all times rebounds and so but along with that,
- 17:11Speaker 1: it's like you don't let what people think. And I
- 17:14Speaker 1: gess that's that's the core my interview with you cannot
- 17:17Speaker 1: because you know, not letting people put you in the box,
- 17:21Speaker 1: letting letting people limit you based on your capabilities. What
- 17:25Speaker 1: drives you, is that what was instilled in you by
- 17:28Speaker 1: your parents that drives you, or just a natural level
- 17:31Speaker 1: of competition that drives you. It's it's honestly both um.
- 17:36Speaker 1: My father would my father would say when I was younger,
- 17:40Speaker 1: I would do things here, do things in the house
- 17:43Speaker 1: with me. Man, he saw me doing in the house
- 17:46Speaker 1: with me, and I just do it. Listen, listen to
- 17:49Speaker 1: them and pay attention. And I probably get frustrated, like,
- 17:52Speaker 1: don't doing this with you every day? But it was
- 17:54Speaker 1: it was my dad. And as to say, it's token,
- 17:58Speaker 1: it would translate to hey, my cousins will come over
- 18:02Speaker 1: and I would instantly tell them, Hey, we're waking up
- 18:06Speaker 1: in the morning, we're gonna work out. Hey, when you
- 18:09Speaker 1: get up in the morning, I don't want to hear
- 18:11Speaker 1: you complaining about like while we're getting up this early,
- 18:13Speaker 1: like we're working. And then it turned to my father
- 18:18Speaker 1: just no new every time around my cousin, YO, come on, push.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I was pushing my cousins just as much as my
- 18:26Speaker 1: father would say, Hey, you got it, you got this, son,
- 18:29Speaker 1: just give it your best. But it was it was
- 18:31Speaker 1: never my father was never as a forcing me to
- 18:35Speaker 1: do it. He was always telling me, hey, son, I'm
- 18:38Speaker 1: telling you didn't do this to work out, keep your
- 18:41Speaker 1: body and shape, because just you need it for life.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It's not because hey, you want to be this superstar
- 18:48Speaker 1: basketball player. Is that A third? No, you need to
- 18:51Speaker 1: just have your body and shape and ready for whatever.
- 18:54Speaker 1: For life and your mind. It's gonna help your body.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Your body and mind will help each other. If you
- 19:01Speaker 1: work your body and you work your mind, they're gonna
- 19:04Speaker 1: come hand to hand. So you can think. You can
- 19:06Speaker 1: think on a go. It's gonna help you for basketball later.
- 19:10Speaker 1: You want to be an NBA player, that's what you
- 19:11Speaker 1: keep telling me. So you gotta sharp not just your body.
- 19:15Speaker 1: You have to sharpen your mind. So I would wake
- 19:18Speaker 1: up with my cousins when they was there, tell them
- 19:21Speaker 1: come on his work out. I'm all hype. My father
- 19:23Speaker 1: didn't really have to bring the energy. Then afterwards I'm like, hey,
- 19:26Speaker 1: I gotta do crossword puzzles. But it wasn't crossword puzzles
- 19:30Speaker 1: like your typical Hey, you know, kids get to find
- 19:33Speaker 1: the word. It's kind The third no, I had to
- 19:35Speaker 1: look at the cross word, look at the words on
- 19:37Speaker 1: the side and read them, read the words and know
- 19:41Speaker 1: how to spell the words, then know the meaning and
- 19:43Speaker 1: definition of the word. Didn't put the same words in
- 19:46Speaker 1: a sentence right. That drove me to go. You know what,
- 19:50Speaker 1: when I got to college, I want to do speech communications. Absolutely.
- 19:53Speaker 1: You know the interesting thing about we hit that a
- 19:56Speaker 1: lot like you were at the beginning to the end
- 19:58Speaker 1: of y'all say I wanted to be an NB and
- 20:01Speaker 1: then of course what and you you. I want to
- 20:05Speaker 1: say this real clean because it's a compliment to individual
- 20:07Speaker 1: who I encounter like you, who are living a dream
- 20:11Speaker 1: that we watch on television. We admire the accomplishment. There's
- 20:14Speaker 1: a limited roster space. There are guys in the G
- 20:16Speaker 1: League who are trying to get in there. There are
- 20:18Speaker 1: guys who are not in the league trying to get
- 20:20Speaker 1: in there. What made you or what enabled you to
- 20:24Speaker 1: reach your dream of being and able to play in
- 20:26Speaker 1: the NBA Kenne for reed Um, the motivation of, like
- 20:30Speaker 1: I said, my parents, Honestly, my dad, I'm pushing himself
- 20:34Speaker 1: going to the way we lived in He lived in
- 20:36Speaker 1: Geersey City, but every day from Monday to Friday, he
- 20:43Speaker 1: worked for the Union and New York. He will catch
- 20:47Speaker 1: the train, wake up dumb early in the morning just
- 20:50Speaker 1: to catch the train to go all the way to
- 20:53Speaker 1: New York to be at work at eight o'clock in
- 20:55Speaker 1: the morning. And we'll work from eight o'clock all the
- 20:59Speaker 1: way to I don't know, like five, sometimes her six.
- 21:04Speaker 1: But we're working doing painting jobs for the buildings that
- 21:08Speaker 1: they were constructing. He helped hang sheet rock and do
- 21:11Speaker 1: all that stuff and hat it was. But he did
- 21:14Speaker 1: gose construction work. His main thing was painting, but he
- 21:17Speaker 1: learned the construction part of it in order to make
- 21:20Speaker 1: sure he did was able to build other things later
- 21:24Speaker 1: in life and hand do other things at his own
- 21:26Speaker 1: house that he owned at the time. So it was
- 21:29Speaker 1: just amazing to watch him do that. Then my mom, uh,
- 21:33Speaker 1: like she just been a battle in my whole life.
- 21:37Speaker 1: She she got lupus when I was really young, and
- 21:41Speaker 1: ever since then it's been like a fight for her
- 21:45Speaker 1: to survive and just see me grow into the man
- 21:48Speaker 1: I am today. And I've always said, hey, every rebound
- 21:52Speaker 1: that I get in my life, I'm hoping and praying
- 21:54Speaker 1: that it just goes towards my mom another day, towards
- 21:57Speaker 1: her life. That's it. Just another day and not even
- 22:01Speaker 1: a week or a month. And I just went it
- 22:04Speaker 1: made me go after every rebound that same way, because
- 22:08Speaker 1: every time I'm out there on the court, her mom
- 22:10Speaker 1: was just yell at me. Nor, that's your house. Nor
- 22:14Speaker 1: nor just my nickname. I member name is Bernard. So
- 22:17Speaker 1: she my father was Bernard. She right right. No, you
- 22:24Speaker 1: better go out there, get that rebound. Stop playing. No,
- 22:27Speaker 1: that's your house. Don't let nobody get no rebounds, get
- 22:31Speaker 1: shoot no shots at your house. You better go in
- 22:33Speaker 1: there and block that shot, rebound the ball, and run
- 22:35Speaker 1: the floor. So I mean my career. Look at your
- 22:41Speaker 1: children's eyes to see the true magic of a forest.
- 22:44Speaker 1: It's a storybook world for them. You look and see
- 22:47Speaker 1: a tree, They see the wrinkled face of a wizard
- 22:50Speaker 1: with arms outstretched to the sky. They see treasuring pebbles,
- 22:55Speaker 1: They see a windy path that could lead to adventure,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and they see you. They're fearless. Guide. Is this fascinating world?

- 23:41Speaker 1: Roker here as a guy with his own catchphrase. I
- 23:44Speaker 1: appreciate that Smokey's only said only you can prevent wildfires,
- 23:48Speaker 1: but I'm filling in because there's a lot more to report,
- 23:52Speaker 1: like when they're parched or windy conditions out there. You
- 23:55Speaker 1: gotta be extra careful with things like burning yard wide.
- 23:58Speaker 1: After all, wildfires can start anywhere, even in your neck
- 24:02Speaker 1: of the woods. Go to Smokey Bear dot com to
- 24:04Speaker 1: learn more about wildfire prevention. Brought to you by the U. S.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Forest Service, your state Forester, and the ad Council is there.
- 24:11Speaker 1: It's this time to you know, try to just try
- 24:14Speaker 1: to you know, we always talk about motivation. We always
- 24:16Speaker 1: talking about somebody is still in a constant, constant montral
- 24:20Speaker 1: into your mindset and if you keep hearing. I always
- 24:23Speaker 1: tell people, especially with children, if children here negative, then
- 24:26Speaker 1: they will live a life of negativity. If a children
- 24:29Speaker 1: in your situation. They kept telling you what you could
- 24:31Speaker 1: do and what you could not do. And that's what
- 24:34Speaker 1: I hear. Let's keep keep screaming out of this conversation
- 24:38Speaker 1: and screaming out in a good way, you know. And
- 24:40Speaker 1: when I talk about you being more than an athlete,
- 24:42Speaker 1: we gotta go over to the gaming and and I'm
- 24:45Speaker 1: abouna just tell you this nord you know, is that
- 24:54Speaker 1: you know black people, they're gonna give your nickname, my nickname,
- 24:56Speaker 1: Ricky okay, So you don't say I gotta call you
- 25:00Speaker 1: know okay okay. And so when when I look at
- 25:07Speaker 1: look at in ninety I would I was as that
- 25:08Speaker 1: could producing of the Jamie Foxx Show. And I was
- 25:11Speaker 1: in the writer's room and they had a game on.
- 25:13Speaker 1: They had a video game on gaming on and they
- 25:16Speaker 1: they they and I sat down and I went, let
- 25:18Speaker 1: me play and then they handed me something. I want
- 25:23Speaker 1: to say something because fear into me because they got
- 25:25Speaker 1: next to me. Was able to flip, he was able
- 25:27Speaker 1: to kick, he was to spend, he was able to
- 25:29Speaker 1: blow torches. Right then I realized I can't do this.
- 25:35Speaker 1: So the ability to be able to manipulate these games
- 25:41Speaker 1: and play basketball, play football, to play Fortnite. Talk about
- 25:45Speaker 1: that journey of developing these talents, these skills as a
- 25:48Speaker 1: game gaming pro, talk about it. Honestly, it's just my
- 25:54Speaker 1: way of escape me from my environment. I grew up.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I grew up in the hood. Like I mean, like
- 26:01Speaker 1: the typical hood story. Hey, this kid came from nothing
- 26:04Speaker 1: and he he didn't have no finance, you backing, or
- 26:08Speaker 1: real wealth and he still made it out. I mean,
- 26:11Speaker 1: that's that's typically what you're here nowadays. And typically us
- 26:15Speaker 1: black people are the odds that were half to face
- 26:19Speaker 1: every day. So for me, it was either hey, the
- 26:23Speaker 1: streets is calling you. You live right across the street,
- 26:26Speaker 1: well right across street from a park where a lot
- 26:28Speaker 1: of murders happened, a lot of dead bodies happen. Then
- 26:31Speaker 1: hey you right there, you live right down I mean
- 26:34Speaker 1: right upstairs from where they sell drugs out at the
- 26:39Speaker 1: corner store. Right there, you live right upstairs from that.
- 26:42Speaker 1: So and then all these game members, Hey, you got
- 26:45Speaker 1: crips and bloods all in your building, and they all
- 26:48Speaker 1: wanted you to join in. Hey represent us, represent us,
- 26:51Speaker 1: Hey you you're part of us. We're gonna protect you
- 26:54Speaker 1: and make sure that we got your back, and but
- 26:58Speaker 1: my foundation was what kept me from going there. My mom, No,
- 27:03Speaker 1: you can't go outside, my dad. Now, that's not that,
- 27:06Speaker 1: that's not the environment for you. You don't need to
- 27:08Speaker 1: be there. So what has the kid to do? Okay,
- 27:11Speaker 1: it's snowing, it's raining. You can't go outside and go
- 27:14Speaker 1: to the park like I usually do. I usually go
- 27:16Speaker 1: to week Way Park, go up the street with the
- 27:19Speaker 1: courts hat and I'm playing there. Then I come back home.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I'm dead tired. Dank shirt was white now was black.
- 27:25Speaker 1: But you know, you gotta get it in. You gotta hustle.
- 27:30Speaker 1: It's raining, snowing outside. What else is there to do?
- 27:32Speaker 1: You can't like, you don't have the accessibility of a
- 27:36Speaker 1: gym because you can't afford that. You can't afford to
- 27:38Speaker 1: go to a gym, you can't afford to have a
- 27:40Speaker 1: gym membership. So you play video games. You sit back
- 27:45Speaker 1: and imagine, Hey, this is a world that's outside of
- 27:49Speaker 1: the my outside world can be like, or this is
- 27:52Speaker 1: a world where my life can be like. So I
- 27:55Speaker 1: got into playing. Back then, it wasn't matt and it
- 27:59Speaker 1: was Game Day. Absolutely. Back then, it wasn't two K.
- 28:02Speaker 1: It was Inbay Live so I was playing NBA Live.
- 28:06Speaker 1: It was playing mad I was my own excuse me.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I was playing Game Day. Then I was playing Resident Evil.
- 28:14Speaker 1: I was playing Uh. I was playing Hey. I sat
- 28:17Speaker 1: in my environment my father, and I'm telling me, hey,
- 28:19Speaker 1: this this game because games didn't have no ratings back then,
- 28:24Speaker 1: right brand that far though, playing that, I'm like, hey,
- 28:29Speaker 1: this is where I live at. I could I could
- 28:33Speaker 1: be the person that's doing all the negative stuff and
- 28:37Speaker 1: all that stuff that's not supposed to be, like that's
- 28:40Speaker 1: gonna get you locked up and not on the right path.
- 28:42Speaker 1: I can be this person on the game. So hey,
- 28:46Speaker 1: let mis stick to this. And okay, hey, it's not
- 28:51Speaker 1: just my parents make me play video games. Hey, you
- 28:53Speaker 1: gotta read these books and do this stuff too. So
- 28:56Speaker 1: it was okay, I could read these books real quick,
- 28:58Speaker 1: do all this stuff, do all these words, keep learning,
- 29:01Speaker 1: keep expanding my brain. Then or let me go overhead
- 29:03Speaker 1: to these video games because I don't want to think
- 29:06Speaker 1: about the outside world and what's really going on and
- 29:10Speaker 1: the negativity. I want to think positive and I feel
- 29:13Speaker 1: like I can control stuff. And that's what it does
- 29:16Speaker 1: is a control thing. Well, you know the thing about
- 29:19Speaker 1: it when you when I look at you. First of all,
- 29:21Speaker 1: I appreciate the humbleness, which is part of half foundations
- 29:26Speaker 1: narrative being appreciative. I hear that in that interview. I
- 29:29Speaker 1: hear the word thankful in that interview. You know you
- 29:31Speaker 1: you do represent that. And then you represented all phases
- 29:34Speaker 1: of HAT in this interview, and I think that would
- 29:37Speaker 1: that being the foundation. How does your foundation work, who
- 29:41Speaker 1: you're focusing on helping with your HAT foundation, and what's
- 29:44Speaker 1: the future of HAT. Well, hopefully the future of HACK
- 29:48Speaker 1: can be expanded to many of states. Sir um. Just
- 29:55Speaker 1: it's just basically the health that you. It's healthy you
- 29:58Speaker 1: through programming and not programming of of oh like, hey
- 30:03Speaker 1: you gotta do this, listen to this and be this
- 30:06Speaker 1: type of person. No, it's programming of having fun and
- 30:09Speaker 1: enjoying it, understanding that your knowledge can get you further
- 30:12Speaker 1: than your athletic abilities ever can, because hey, at the
- 30:17Speaker 1: end of the day, yeah, you can play hard and
- 30:20Speaker 1: do everything possible to try to make it to that
- 30:24Speaker 1: next level of the NBA or overseas, but it may
- 30:27Speaker 1: not pan out for you, or injury maybe happen. What
- 30:31Speaker 1: we want to make sure that you've got a scholarship,
- 30:34Speaker 1: and not just any scholarship, but four years scholarship to
- 30:37Speaker 1: a D one school to get your education first, because
- 30:41Speaker 1: that's what we care about here and have foundation and
- 30:45Speaker 1: it it's about your education, about you going to that
- 30:50Speaker 1: next level of education, about you graduate in high school
- 30:56Speaker 1: a better person, not just man, not just female, because
- 31:01Speaker 1: we have manually lead boys, we have man and lead girls.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Just a man or a female being a better overall
- 31:09Speaker 1: person going out there feeling is confident as you were
- 31:14Speaker 1: on the court, but in the classroom or just in
- 31:19Speaker 1: the dorms, because at the end of the day, the
- 31:23Speaker 1: whole objective is to get you to D one so
- 31:26Speaker 1: you can make the world a better place and have
- 31:29Speaker 1: a full ride in your parents. Don't don't have to
- 31:32Speaker 1: worry about Nothing I gotta do is worry about whole
- 31:35Speaker 1: I got a little bit of money, I can come
- 31:36Speaker 1: see you, or hey, we got a little bit of money,
- 31:38Speaker 1: you could come see me. And that's what my parents
- 31:41Speaker 1: had to worry about. And that's what I believe that
- 31:44Speaker 1: the youth should be able to pretty much having their
- 31:47Speaker 1: hands with the proper lane, with the proper opportunity, and
- 31:51Speaker 1: that's what hats all about. Giving you the proper opportunity.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I know that I come from an inner city, six usters,
- 31:56Speaker 1: two brothers, so I know about what you're talking about.
- 32:00Speaker 1: You know, I didn't when I grew up. I didn't
- 32:01Speaker 1: have video games. You know. I just I always tell people,
- 32:04Speaker 1: you know, when we moved to a better neighborhood, but
- 32:06Speaker 1: it was the same black people. It was the same experience.
- 32:08Speaker 1: When I walked outside that door, it was just a
- 32:10Speaker 1: little bit better. And that was just my parents desire
- 32:13Speaker 1: just to give us a little bit better, to seek
- 32:15Speaker 1: a little bit better opportunity because they saw there were
- 32:17Speaker 1: opportunities out there. And when I look at your skill set.
- 32:20Speaker 1: I have Rick Fox on the show and he was
- 32:21Speaker 1: talking about he owned a gaming leave part of the
- 32:24Speaker 1: Gaming League, and he owned a game team, a team,
- 32:28Speaker 1: and he was just talking about the value of these teams. Now,
- 32:31Speaker 1: I know you wanted fourth, Now you won this second place.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Where does the future hold for you in that whole
- 32:35Speaker 1: Fortnight and the whole gaming industry? Or you're gonna be
- 32:38Speaker 1: built part of are You're gonna own a team, We're
- 32:40Speaker 1: gonna be part of the league. What does it take you?
- 32:42Speaker 1: Kenneth for Reid a k A. Nord Well that's what
- 32:48Speaker 1: we're building it right now. Uh. Like I said, I
- 32:51Speaker 1: see the future in the youth, and the half Foundation
- 32:54Speaker 1: is kind of that. I'm looking for people to help
- 32:58Speaker 1: give back and not just because it's Kenneth Free's hat. Yeah,
- 33:03Speaker 1: but it's not for me. I don't see it. Don
- 33:05Speaker 1: from it on. Anything I'm doing is just giving it
- 33:07Speaker 1: back to the kids. Everything I that's everything I'm about.
- 33:13Speaker 1: I have five kids of my own, three boys, two girls,
- 33:16Speaker 1: So for me is hey, I'm building them to understand
- 33:20Speaker 1: that you gotta work your tell off to reach your
- 33:23Speaker 1: goals back the same token, make louse, make impact in
- 33:27Speaker 1: the world, don't just be a person who, oh make
- 33:32Speaker 1: their dreams come to all the other stuff and like
- 33:35Speaker 1: I want to isolate myself from everybody. No give back,
- 33:39Speaker 1: the build, continue to be a great person. Build your
- 33:42Speaker 1: your name in the history books as Hey, tire Free
- 33:48Speaker 1: did this, Kinsey Free did this the third, Kinneth because
- 33:55Speaker 1: I have a like I said, my son, so the third,
- 33:58Speaker 1: he's the third. I'm the second as the first, Hey
- 34:02Speaker 1: the third, like, you got the name, so you got it?
- 34:06Speaker 1: You better so and then you know Kena and tie
- 34:14Speaker 1: in there of course them yo y'all just because your
- 34:18Speaker 1: brother got the name on me, y'all can't do the
- 34:20Speaker 1: same thing. Y'all boys, all, y'all boys, y'all go. But
- 34:24Speaker 1: for me, I'm more so on my girls than anything,
- 34:28Speaker 1: because yo, y'all little girls. Everybody looking for y'all to
- 34:32Speaker 1: be black little girls who just look for handouts and
- 34:35Speaker 1: marry athletes or whatever. Then oh, just have plenty of
- 34:38Speaker 1: baby like baby fathers or whatever. No, you're gonna be
- 34:42Speaker 1: better than this. You're gonna be smart, educated. You Google
- 34:45Speaker 1: be a doctor, you can will be a nurse, you
- 34:47Speaker 1: google will be freaking astronaut, anything in this world. But
- 34:51Speaker 1: you're going to be educated for sure, and then you're
- 34:54Speaker 1: gonna have the you're gonna be tossed. I want to
- 34:56Speaker 1: make sure you have the physical body to not be
