- 0:05Hello love lies. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:08of Aligned and Driving for Teachers.
- 0:11This is the podcast that speaks straight to your teacher heart
- 0:14and holds faces to all the things that you carry.
- 0:17I'm Mel. I'm a teacher, a mum, a mindset
- 0:20shifter and a certified emotional sponge.
- 0:23If you know, you know. Today we are talking about
- 0:27something that doesn't always show up on your pay slip, your
- 0:29timetable or your To Do List, but it weighs heavy on us every
- 0:34single day. And I'm talking about the hidden
- 0:38load, the one that no one sees but you still carry.
- 0:43It's drumroll please. The emotional load of teaching.
- 0:50It's those things that you hold, remember, absorb, and worry
- 0:54about that no one else sees. Now, if you've ever gone home
- 1:00emotionally just exhausted but struggled to explain why, then
- 1:06this episode's going to feel like a breath of relief.
- 1:09So what is the hidden load? It's the mental and emotional
- 1:12weight that you carry behind the scenes.
- 1:16You're remembering who hasn't had breakfast, You're noticing
- 1:18who's more withdrawn than usual. You're managing 25 plus
- 1:21emotional states while still regulating your own, might I
- 1:24add. You're holding space for
- 1:26students trauma, their grief, their meltdowns, their family
- 1:29breakdowns, their family history.
- 1:32You're being the calm in the storm again and again and it's
- 1:37invisible. No one puts that in your job
- 1:40description, but it's very, very real and it's exhausting 100%.
- 1:46So why does this load hit different?
- 1:48It's because you care. You are caring deeply every
- 1:53single day and that takes energy.
- 1:56Let's be honest. You don't just teach content.
- 1:59You hold hearts. You don't just manage behaviour,
- 2:03you're managing nervous systems. Like multiple nervous systems.
- 2:08Oh, good hiccups. Sorry.
- 2:10You don't just supervise play, you supervise well being as
- 2:13well. Yours, the kids, everybody's.
- 2:16It's not just the students. You're also supporting the
- 2:19colleagues who are struggling. You're helping parents navigate
- 2:22tricky situations. You're softening your tone even
- 2:25when you're crumbling or dying inside.
- 2:28You're putting everyone else's needs 1st and then wondering why
- 2:32at the end of the day, you feel utterly depleted.
- 2:36Let's do a bit of a mindset shift here.
- 2:38Caring does not mean carrying it all.
- 2:42Here's the truth. You can be a deeply, deeply
- 2:47caring teacher without holding everything yourself.
- 2:51You can support kids without sacrificing your own mental
- 2:55health, and you can 100% love your job and still have limits.
- 3:00Your heart is not a dumping ground.
- 3:02You are not a sponge, even though sometimes if you know,
- 3:05you know. You are a human and it is OK to
- 3:09not carry it all. OK, So what are some strategies
- 3:14that could help us to lighten this load?
- 3:17Well, here are some ways that I protect my peace whilst still
- 3:22caring. I have emotional boundaries.
- 3:25I care, but I don't absorb. Visualise zipping up your energy
- 3:30before class and protecting your field like you have a bubble
- 3:34around yourself. Your energy, You protect your
- 3:37energy. You can still care, but you
- 3:39don't have to take on all of that energy.
- 3:42OK, you do energy. Check insurance.
- 3:46Ask is this mine to hold? If it's not, release it.
- 3:51Breathe it out, send it back out of your bubble.
- 3:54Debrief with someone safe. Even just 5 minutes with a
- 3:58colleague who gets it can help you shift that weight.
- 4:03You can write it out brain dump the load in a journal or your
- 4:06notes app and unload the mental clutter.
- 4:09I know I've talked about journaling before but honestly
- 4:12it makes a world of difference. Even if you just need a journal
- 4:15to get like a dump, a brain dump journal that you can just get
- 4:19all the, no other word for it really, but get all the crap out
- 4:22of your head and then deal with the other stuff.
- 4:24So for me, I journal of the night and I get rid of all the
- 4:27stuff from the day, but then I finish with sharing some things
- 4:30that I was grateful for. So that's all I focus on before
- 4:33I go to bed. Like what are the things I was
- 4:34grateful for today? What am I celebrating today?
- 4:37Those positive things? I've dumped all the rest,
- 4:39chucked it out and I focus on those positives for the day.
- 4:43You could use some energetic tools.
- 4:45I know I'm gonna talk about these or I may have already
- 4:47talked about them, but EFT tapping, breath work, Oracle
- 4:51cards, going for a walk, listening to music, whatever's
- 4:54gonna bring you back to you. I'm not saying that use all of
- 4:57these things. I'm just saying you might find
- 5:00something that works for you. It has taken me years, honestly.
- 5:05How long? I've been teaching for over 15
- 5:06years and I don't think until the last 18 months that I really
- 5:10started to find myself and what works for me and to help reset
- 5:14me as a teacher and a mum. But it's bringing me back to me.
- 5:19So let me give you some affirmations to help with the
- 5:23hidden load and speak these into your day to help lighten that
- 5:28load as you go through. So the first one.
- 5:31I hold space, not burdens. What's not mine to carry, I
- 5:38release with love. I honour my empathy and my
- 5:44boundaries. My worth is not measured by how
- 5:49much I absorb. Just choose one of them to say
- 5:54to yourself throughout the week if you need to access it again,
- 5:58just to remind you about your mindset shift.
- 6:01It's not yours to carry. Let it go.
- 6:04Some quick resets for you. Start your day with three deep
- 6:08breaths and set an intention for your day.
- 6:10Because remember, your thoughts control your actions.
- 6:14So whatever you're thinking and putting out into the universe
- 6:16that day, that's what you're going to get.
- 6:18So if you wake up and think I'm going to have a terrible day,
- 6:21well guess what? I'm really sorry to tell you,
- 6:23but you probably are because you need to change your thinking.
- 6:27So take some deep breaths and set a positive intention for
- 6:30your day and keep repeating that to yourself throughout the day.
- 6:33If you need to, you could speak a boundary out loud to yourself
- 6:38or to others. If you need reminders on how to
- 6:41set boundaries, go back to my episode about boundaries and the
- 6:44word no. Learning how to say no, OK, You
- 6:47need to have boundaries in place.
- 6:48Respectful boundaries, release some energy after work.
- 6:54It could be anything but some ideas that come off from my head
- 6:57like have a shower, have a meditation shower, like put on
- 7:01some really calming music and just enjoy the water.
- 7:04Water is really calming and releasing and you can just
- 7:07imagine as the water runs over you that you are releasing all
- 7:10of that tension and that stuff from the bad day.
- 7:13If you've had a bad day, gentle movement, going for a walk,
- 7:17getting out in nature, just anything like that.
- 7:19Or literally going back to being high fibe high vibe shaking,
- 7:24like going for a dance, shaking your arms or those types of
- 7:28things. Just getting back into that high
- 7:29vibe. And then you could journal the
- 7:32phrase for your journal entries. Like today I release and write
- 7:36about what you're releasing and putting back into the universe.
- 7:39So today I release these things and you're giving them back.
- 7:44Those tiny little resets are going to help keep you being you
- 7:49under all of that extra hidden weight that you're carrying as
- 7:53you are doing sacred work. The emotional labour that you
- 7:56have. It might be invisible, but it's
- 7:59powerful. And it's why your students trust
- 8:02you. Your colleagues trust you
- 8:05because they know that you're gonna listen to them, you're
- 8:08gonna agree with them, you're gonna support them.
- 8:10But it takes a toll on us too. So please, lovely, just remember
- 8:15that you were never meant to carry all of this alone.
- 8:17You do not have to take on all the trauma, all the grief, all
- 8:20the emotion throughout the day. You are allowed to draw lines
- 8:24and you are 100% allowed to protect your own peace.
- 8:29You're allowed to be a brilliant teacher without burning yourself
- 8:33out by care fatigue. Like to call it?
- 8:36OK, so just remember all of those things that you need to
- 8:42focus on, you setting positive intentions, taking deep breaths,
- 8:45putting boundaries in place, releasing that energy after work
- 8:49so you're not taking it out on your family or yourself or
- 8:52anyone else. Please do not go home and dwell
- 8:54in it. Get rid of it.
- 8:56Don't take it on because you're probably going to have to rest
- 8:58and reset to do it all again tomorrow because you never know
- 9:01what's happened at home for those kids at night.
- 9:04And then the next day you're going to turn up and you've got
- 9:0525 kids in front of you again with a whole different story.
- 9:09You need to protect your energy so that you're able to give back
- 9:12to them as well. Because you are a brilliant
- 9:15teacher. I've said that before.
- 9:16So if this episode has resonated with you, please make sure you
- 9:20share it with teacher friends. We're all carrying it all
- 9:23silently. Tag me to London Thriving
- 9:26because I'd love to know which part spoke to your heart today.
- 9:30Because you need to just relax when you get home from work and
- 9:35decompress 'cause you never know, you might be like me and
- 9:38you have two wonderful children, 2 twins, 2 twins, 1 twin, one
- 9:43set of twins that makes more sense at home that then unload
- 9:46their emotional energy. So I have to have my boundaries
- 9:50in place, ready to rest and reset and recover.
- 9:54But be present as a mum. And you might have that too.
- 9:57Or you might have family members that require your attention when
- 10:00you go home. Or a partner or a pet that
- 10:03hasn't seen you all day and you need to give them your attention
- 10:06and they don't appreciate it when you get home and you're
- 10:08exhausted and you do not want to go for that walk that they have
- 10:11been literally waiting all day for.
- 10:14So make sure you are doing what you need to do to rest and
- 10:17decompress and then get going so that you've got energy to spare
- 10:20for others. So until next time, just
- 10:23remember to soften your shoulders to sip your tea or
- 10:26your coffee. Stay aligned, keep thriving, and
- 10:30I promise I will talk to you all again soon.
- 10:34Bye, guys.
