- 0:07Speaker 1: has the secrets of success experience firsthand by marketing and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me
- 0:13Speaker 1: advice on many occasions. In incase you didn't notice, I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: not broke. You know, he'll be interview with celebrity CEOs
- 0:19Speaker 1: and entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's what he likes
- 0:22Speaker 1: to do, it's what he likes to share. Now it's
- 0:25Speaker 1: time to hear from my man, Rashan McDonald. Money Making Conversations.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Here we come. No show another moment of telling people
- 0:33Speaker 1: what they need to hear, even if they want to listen.
- 0:37Speaker 1: A lot of people get advice on the day. Every day.
- 0:39Speaker 1: They get advice to get advice from teachers, they get
- 0:42Speaker 1: advice from employers, and get advice from their parents, to
- 0:45Speaker 1: get advice from mentors. But that but that necessarily mean
- 0:50Speaker 1: they want to listen. And that's what that's the separation line,
- 0:54Speaker 1: you know, because sometimes when you have to listen to
- 0:55Speaker 1: means that involves more work. If it involves more work,
- 0:58Speaker 1: that means that are you willing to do the things
- 1:00Speaker 1: that are necessary to reach your dreams. The expectations are
- 1:04Speaker 1: difficult when it is outlined that this is the path
- 1:07Speaker 1: that you have to go to get there. That's a
- 1:10Speaker 1: lot of people running from and they sent over to
- 1:13Speaker 1: sitting in the corner and wine and complain. You have
- 1:15Speaker 1: to watch those complainers, those complainers and those naysayers. They're different,
- 1:19Speaker 1: they are different people. My goals and hosted money making
- 1:22Speaker 1: conversations to give business owners, employers and employees and everyday
- 1:26Speaker 1: people in central information that will successfully uplift for your
- 1:29Speaker 1: daily lives. That sounds simple, but it's not because of
- 1:34Speaker 1: the fact that a lot of people want to party,
- 1:36Speaker 1: a lot of people want to eat the right food
- 1:39Speaker 1: but can't afford it, on living the right living the
- 1:42Speaker 1: place of their dreams but can't afford it, but don't
- 1:45Speaker 1: want to do the work to get there, because guess
- 1:46Speaker 1: we're doing. The work does not happen overnight. I wish
- 1:49Speaker 1: I could say that the houses I live in now,
- 1:51Speaker 1: the car that are driving now, I got it because
- 1:54Speaker 1: a year ago I wanted it. It's tied to experience,
- 1:59Speaker 1: it's tied to relationships, is tied to a resume that
- 2:03Speaker 1: allows me to be able to charge people a certain
- 2:05Speaker 1: amount of money for my services and because of that,
- 2:08Speaker 1: I benefit. But that's a that's a that's a journey.
- 2:11Speaker 1: A lot of people don't want to get to the
- 2:13Speaker 1: journey part. Uh. That's why I created Money Making Conversation.
- 2:16Speaker 1: My guests on the show the day I really want
- 2:19Speaker 1: to talk about he has something that is very similar
- 2:21Speaker 1: to money Making Conversations. So without further ado, let me
- 2:24Speaker 1: introduce him. So when you started talking to him, because
- 2:26Speaker 1: he is on the phone, my next guest as an
- 2:28Speaker 1: award winning music producer, songwriter, musician, arranger, composer and founder
- 2:34Speaker 1: of Sea Bass Entertainment and see Blake Studios, Sea Bass
- 2:37Speaker 1: Entertainment and see Blake Studios or his full house production companies.
- 2:41Speaker 1: He has also launched a stay at home money movement
- 2:44Speaker 1: on social media to share his knowledge and provide mentorship
- 2:48Speaker 1: from his industry experience with others who want to develop
- 2:51Speaker 1: careers in the music business. This kind of sounds like
- 2:53Speaker 1: money making Conversations, which is good because I'm not saying
- 2:56Speaker 1: that that's his idea, my idea. And we're going to
- 3:00Speaker 1: talk about how he's approaching his end of the business
- 3:02Speaker 1: and I'm approaching my end of the business. And guess what,
- 3:04Speaker 1: We're gonna create a lot of winners on the phone.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making Conversation. I missed him at
- 3:09Speaker 1: the ESPN live broadcast. They told me he was there
- 3:12Speaker 1: and I couldn't get over to see him. Please welcome,
- 3:15Speaker 1: Dana says to buddy, Hey man, I heard I missed you. Man,
- 3:21Speaker 1: he was at the end. Let me back up with
- 3:23Speaker 1: last a couple of weeks. September twenty uh Stephen A.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Smith brought ESPN First Take to Williamington, Delaware to promote
- 3:30Speaker 1: hbc USED College Fair, where we was encouraging seniors in
- 3:35Speaker 1: high school to come to this HBCU featured event. We
- 3:39Speaker 1: had like twenty three colleges who had confirmed from HBCU.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Thirteen of them were registering students on the spot in
- 3:46Speaker 1: the words, if you brought your S, a T, score,
- 3:49Speaker 1: a CT score, your transcript, you can register. So far,
- 3:53Speaker 1: they've generated over four million dollars in scholarships that have
- 3:58Speaker 1: been distributed from that college fair. And then they tell
- 4:01Speaker 1: me that you used at the live broadcast. Correct, I
- 4:05Speaker 1: was there. Yeah, I actually live in Nork Newark, Delaware,
- 4:09Speaker 1: which is no more than six or seven minutes away.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You know, I'm a big I'm a big sports fan,
- 4:15Speaker 1: so I had to definitely come and check out Stephen A. Smith. Well,
- 4:18Speaker 1: I wish I know, you know that that's my man,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and so in the future we'll connect. That would be
- 4:23Speaker 1: our connection because I appreciate you coming there. What was
- 4:26Speaker 1: your take at the lib Brards what what would your
- 4:28Speaker 1: take away from the experience. I want to make sure
- 4:30Speaker 1: any of everybody who attended really got an HBCU experience
- 4:34Speaker 1: and walked away with a sense of the culture of
- 4:36Speaker 1: the HBCU. What was definitely definitely, uh, informative and exciting
- 4:43Speaker 1: all at the same time. I actually have a daughter
- 4:46Speaker 1: that sugerior in UM the University of Delaware UM, so
- 4:51Speaker 1: I I understand what I took away was from Stephen A. Smith,
- 4:55Speaker 1: you know going to Western Salem. You know you basically
- 4:59Speaker 1: you know what we always is teaching our black community.
- 5:01Speaker 1: You two can do this. You two can make this happen.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And it was just really great to see Max and
- 5:08Speaker 1: Molly actually show love to him and you know, praise
- 5:12Speaker 1: colleges and an office surrounding colleges to let them know
- 5:15Speaker 1: that the black community, you know, if we put in
- 5:18Speaker 1: the work, it definitely can happen. It's what you put
- 5:20Speaker 1: into it, and that's that's that's the story of your life.
- 5:23Speaker 1: Because right now I want to say you're on fire.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Let me read some things here, like I'm reading this article.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Gospel hit making producer songwriter Dana Surrey recently received three
- 5:33Speaker 1: gm a Dove Award nomination for his work with Jason's
- 5:36Speaker 1: Nelson and The Answer and Miranda Curtis and I'm all in.
- 5:41Speaker 1: That's just a list of the Grammy nominations that you've
- 5:44Speaker 1: been put up for. When it when it comes Surgeon
- 5:46Speaker 1: that you like that, Dana, how how you know? Because
- 5:49Speaker 1: you've been working at it's not overnight And we're gonna
- 5:51Speaker 1: talk about the journey a little bit. That's why I
- 5:52Speaker 1: like to doing this show. Just talk about the journey
- 5:54Speaker 1: a little bit so people can know that your story
- 5:57Speaker 1: can be their story. But it's a lot of work,
- 5:59Speaker 1: a lot of pay, is a lot of nosed tied
- 6:02Speaker 1: to a lot of yeses. That enables to be interviewing
- 6:04Speaker 1: you about the success that you're haven't right now correct yes, sir, well,
- 6:09Speaker 1: I think the most important part is, like you say,
- 6:12Speaker 1: it's it's to build up. I start off as a
- 6:15Speaker 1: musician and willing brun New Jersey, and you know, you
- 6:19Speaker 1: you be a musician, and you that comes from starting
- 6:23Speaker 1: in church to you know, hoping you can get a gig.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And I hopped on a are a couple of R
- 6:28Speaker 1: and B gigs to start working for Highland Rectors where
- 6:31Speaker 1: we're pretty much just playing for any artists. Then you know,
- 6:36Speaker 1: any artists they add. So we we worked from Drew
- 6:39Speaker 1: Hill to Montella Jordan's too, you know, to Kelly Price.
- 6:43Speaker 1: You know. So I worked my way from the bottom,
- 6:45Speaker 1: uh from playing strings to pianos to musical directing and
- 6:49Speaker 1: too you know. And then I hopped into the gospel
- 6:52Speaker 1: world and with Ty Trivitt and you know, end up
- 6:55Speaker 1: producing on his albums and um, and then that worked
- 6:59Speaker 1: worked worked this way into you know, I just really
- 7:01Speaker 1: got tired of telling you know, imagine man going on
- 7:05Speaker 1: tours and three or four months or on a time.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So these people were like, Okay, if I'm leaving my
- 7:11Speaker 1: home for three or four months, I have to make
- 7:13Speaker 1: sure that my wife's restrain. H my, my, you tap
- 7:17Speaker 1: my job. I'm not gonna be back to three or
- 7:18Speaker 1: four months. And then the artist caused you when you
- 7:21Speaker 1: know your week out and says, Hey, you know, the
- 7:24Speaker 1: artist heard his hip, so the tour is canceled and
- 7:27Speaker 1: my hip is fine, Sean, you know fine over brother,
- 7:35Speaker 1: I was like, how did this happen? And you know,
- 7:37Speaker 1: so I said, man, I've got to find a better
- 7:41Speaker 1: way of doing what I loved and being able to
- 7:45Speaker 1: my own situation and and and that you know, brought
- 7:51Speaker 1: me to you know what, I need to stay home
- 7:53Speaker 1: and figure out a way of building writing songs, producing
- 7:58Speaker 1: songs right from the circumference of my home, and be
- 8:01Speaker 1: able to you know, make some real money. And that's
- 8:04Speaker 1: what I started out to do. I started to just
- 8:07Speaker 1: built write a whole bunch of songs that really probably
- 8:09Speaker 1: sucked in the beginning. But you know, songwriting is like
- 8:12Speaker 1: a muscle man, the more you do it, the more
- 8:15Speaker 1: strength will come to it. And you know, after a while,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I started to you know, pitch my songs to people
- 8:20Speaker 1: that are really respected and that turned into a Boys
- 8:23Speaker 1: the Men placement Back in two thousand and that that
- 8:28Speaker 1: one song that I did with Boys the Men end
- 8:31Speaker 1: up really uh ended up on America's Top Model first season.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Thirty seconds of that that song, Rashaan paid me forty
- 8:41Speaker 1: four grand uh and I was only fifty of the work.
- 8:46Speaker 1: You know, I had just split on my earnings for
- 8:48Speaker 1: Boys the Men. So that forty four graham Man, I
- 8:50Speaker 1: built me a studio room. I got myself some equipment,
- 8:53Speaker 1: and I've been going hard ever since, bro hard to paint.
- 8:57Speaker 1: And you know, my cat my catalog has built up.
- 9:00Speaker 1: And now label I know all the labels have relationships
- 9:03Speaker 1: with them, and I get pretty much walk artists into
- 9:06Speaker 1: these labels and these relationships and get them some really
- 9:09Speaker 1: cool record deals if the artist is ready and capable
- 9:12Speaker 1: of making that happen. Because I still take some work
- 9:14Speaker 1: on the artists. Plant also absolutely work on that. It's
- 9:17Speaker 1: really interesting because we're going to have a long term relationship.
- 9:20Speaker 1: And just tell you, because your story is so similar
- 9:22Speaker 1: my very successful stand up comments writing I was. I
- 9:27Speaker 1: was a lot of people always ask me, Wow, why
- 9:29Speaker 1: did you go behind the scene? Because again, I got
- 9:31Speaker 1: tired of comedy clubs. I got kind of tours inconsistency.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So I became a writer, sitcom writer, and I became
- 9:38Speaker 1: a producer because I can control. It's something about weekly
- 9:42Speaker 1: checks that I liked versus you know what I'm talking about,
- 9:47Speaker 1: versus you know, a check whenever or you go out there, well,
- 9:51Speaker 1: you know we thought the two or b three months,
- 9:53Speaker 1: but it's only gonna be a month. Hey, I got
- 9:56Speaker 1: two more extra months of bills that I was because
- 10:00Speaker 1: you didn't know as a talent or This is the
- 10:01Speaker 1: thing about the talent is that once you tell a
- 10:03Speaker 1: talent that the check is coming, that check has spent.
- 10:07Speaker 1: It has been it has been sectioned off into food,
- 10:11Speaker 1: into car and every rent everything. So when you tell
- 10:13Speaker 1: me it's not coming anymore, that's a problem in your
- 10:16Speaker 1: life financially, and it really starts affecting you. So you
- 10:19Speaker 1: have to figure out a new plan. That's why his
- 10:21Speaker 1: new plan was, Hey man, I'm produced, I'm right, I'm controlled.
- 10:25Speaker 1: They're tired of people telling me I got I got
- 10:27Speaker 1: money coming and they can change their mind when they
- 10:28Speaker 1: feel like it, but didn't ask me. And the reason
- 10:30Speaker 1: I like what you're doing, Dana, because you you know
- 10:33Speaker 1: me when I say this, which is true. I hate
- 10:36Speaker 1: people out there selling stuff, telling people that can do
- 10:40Speaker 1: stuff but don't have the resume. They're all hype. They
- 10:44Speaker 1: have not accomplished anything, and it's thousands of them out
- 10:48Speaker 1: they're talking about how they can make you successful, how
- 10:51Speaker 1: they can get you on TV, how they can get
- 10:54Speaker 1: your song published, how they can teach you how to
- 10:57Speaker 1: write a script. How did you tell you how to
- 11:00Speaker 1: manage people? And they have no resume to to back
- 11:04Speaker 1: that up, but they're out there. So when I see
- 11:06Speaker 1: something somebody like you, it is a breath of fresh
- 11:09Speaker 1: air because you are the truth. And guess what more
- 11:12Speaker 1: people need to be talking to the truth than having
- 11:14Speaker 1: conversations with the life. Yeah, bro, you know, I was
- 11:19Speaker 1: reading the scripture today and it's it said you know
- 11:22Speaker 1: tightest too, And they bally say when you teach, teach
- 11:25Speaker 1: truth because if you teach truth, it would never be
- 11:29Speaker 1: able to be criticized. And I really took that as man.
- 11:32Speaker 1: You know, I'm just gonna tell my story. I no
- 11:34Speaker 1: one can tell my story better than I can tell
- 11:36Speaker 1: my story. And I'm encouraging my friends and peers in
- 11:40Speaker 1: college to come and tell their stories because man, a
- 11:43Speaker 1: story and a testimony can change someone's life. I understand that.
- 11:48Speaker 1: And with the stay home money movement, the reoccurring theme
- 11:51Speaker 1: Sean is some some people just may not have the characteristic,
- 11:57Speaker 1: characteristic or the charisma to speak up like I do.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So I tell these people you if you don't introduce yourself,
- 12:04Speaker 1: like if I meet Quincy Jones, reshan, I'm not wasting
- 12:08Speaker 1: my time asking Quincy for a selfie. I want to
- 12:12Speaker 1: do is I want to get Quincy's attention to say, hey, bro,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I remember when you studied music in Germany with with
- 12:18Speaker 1: this composer, Like why you did that? I remember when
- 12:21Speaker 1: you you know you lost your son and that how that?
- 12:24Speaker 1: It's like I know a story because I studied Quincy Jones.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Now I intrigue Quincy Jones Like this dude no really
- 12:31Speaker 1: wants to know the realm. Mean, he doesn't want a picture.
- 12:34Speaker 1: So I teach my students. You know, when you meet
- 12:37Speaker 1: someone that you look up to, it's not about taking
- 12:39Speaker 1: a picture, It's about having a conversation. Hi, my name
- 12:43Speaker 1: is Dani Ray. I want to be like you when
- 12:45Speaker 1: I grow up. Man, Like I saw you get over
- 12:47Speaker 1: this hurdle. How can you help me through it? So
- 12:49Speaker 1: I'm trying to get these people to catch fire, man,
- 12:52Speaker 1: really catch fire and let and overwork everybody. They may
- 12:56Speaker 1: be more talented to you, but overwork them over you.
- 12:59Speaker 1: Don't be a love average, have the energy of being
- 13:02Speaker 1: next level. We gotta be. We have to be boss minded, boss,
- 13:06Speaker 1: have a boss mentality, and that's my whole vibe. Man.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I want to help people get to the next level
- 13:12Speaker 1: because I've been there and I've been there, done that.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I'm and I'm forever student, always learning something new every day.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So that's the whole vibe, man. To get these people
- 13:20Speaker 1: here and get them. I'm excited about their value. You're
- 13:24Speaker 1: talking to the creative to stay home money movement. He
- 13:26Speaker 1: also has been nominated for three g M A Dove Awards.
- 13:29Speaker 1: That would be announcing a live on the broadcast October twentieth, Dana,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I got thirty seconds left my man, Uh, can you
- 13:36Speaker 1: come back on my show? Help me promote when you
- 13:39Speaker 1: at the big House with the stay at home movement?
- 13:41Speaker 1: Want I want to be a part of that. I
- 13:43Speaker 1: want to be a part of that because, like I said,
- 13:44Speaker 1: you my job. You gotta be my wife, my daughter.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I'm I'm getting your rule with the master. Sweet. I
- 13:53Speaker 1: love it. Man. We're gonna talk to my brother. You
- 13:55Speaker 1: and I were connected, man, we are truly truly connected.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Stay strong, stay safe. Hey, this is Tasha Evans and
- 14:14Speaker 1: I'd love to eat a great restaurant. And more than that,
- 14:16Speaker 1: I love great desserts. So does Rashan McDonald. Check out
- 14:19Speaker 1: his new website. That's www Rashan McDonald dot com. That's
- 14:24Speaker 1: r U s h i O N and McDonald is
- 14:27Speaker 1: spelled just like the famous restaurant chain guys. Rashawn is
- 14:30Speaker 1: looking for great bakers for his baker spotlight. He wants
- 14:33Speaker 1: to brag on his fans for their incredible baking skills
- 14:35Speaker 1: on his social media and website. That can be your mom, friend,
- 14:39Speaker 1: co worker, a relative. It's for the word today. As
- 14:41Speaker 1: hosts of money Making Conversations, Rashan McDonald is uniquely positioned

- 14:53Speaker 1: you do the business plan or incorporate or actually create
- 14:56Speaker 1: that product or start selling products, the universe doesn't up
- 15:00Speaker 1: to deal with. Money Making Conversations is an innovative platform
- 15:03Speaker 1: that delivers financial literacy to help everyone with their brand success.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It's good to have a money making conversation with somebody
- 15:10Speaker 1: that makes money. Hi this ra Sean McDonald. And listen
- 15:16Speaker 1: and you're listening to a money making conversation. Wow, we're
- 15:19Speaker 1: having a great day now, My next guest, I will
- 15:21Speaker 1: tell you right now, we can't compare physiques where we
- 15:26Speaker 1: can't we we we we we we just stopped. We
- 15:28Speaker 1: just stopped it right there. Well we can do is
- 15:30Speaker 1: talk about our love for the military. I just, uh,
- 15:34Speaker 1: this is a special interview for me. I just wrapped
- 15:36Speaker 1: up a contract for the Air National Guard where I
- 15:40Speaker 1: was the chief Marketing Officers, where I oversaw all the
- 15:44Speaker 1: website decision making, the the social media posts, all the
- 15:49Speaker 1: media buys for all fifty states the United States and
- 15:53Speaker 1: all three countries which was from Puerto Rico and the
- 15:57Speaker 1: Virgin Islands, as well as watching the d C oversall
- 16:00Speaker 1: a live events, the recruitment. When I wrapped a contract,
- 16:03Speaker 1: the recruitment level was up to one four percent for
- 16:06Speaker 1: the our National Guard and it was an experience I
- 16:08Speaker 1: would personally tell you I've had a lot of success
- 16:10Speaker 1: stories in my life, but it was something about being
- 16:14Speaker 1: responsible for for the country, being able to say that
- 16:19Speaker 1: I enable a position my my talents that God gave
- 16:22Speaker 1: me to uh safely, I would say secure this country
- 16:26Speaker 1: because of the people that I convinced were important that
- 16:30Speaker 1: the Guard could be an important player, important role in
- 16:33Speaker 1: their personal life and to h enlist and so that's
- 16:37Speaker 1: what my guest does. He's an incredible person. Let me
- 16:40Speaker 1: give you some of his credits and we're gonna talk
- 16:42Speaker 1: and uh, he's gonna expose to me or tell me
- 16:44Speaker 1: some of his stories military stories, but more importantly what
- 16:47Speaker 1: he represents this world as a man, as an individual.
- 16:50Speaker 1: My dex guests is a strong advocate of the military.
- 16:53Speaker 1: He's also a master ice carver. You know, we gotta
- 16:56Speaker 1: talk about that pastry shift. Everybody know I'm gonna winning baker,
- 17:00Speaker 1: So you know, we gotta talk about that sugar sculpture.
- 17:03Speaker 1: I don't know what that is, but we don't know
- 17:05Speaker 1: about We're gonna find out about what sugar sculpturing is.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Along with other specialties, he has known worldwide for his
- 17:12Speaker 1: advocacy for the military service and suicide prevention, in which
- 17:16Speaker 1: he does two thousand, two hundred and twenty two push
- 17:19Speaker 1: ups a day except Saturday and Sunday. That's probably a
- 17:25Speaker 1: year I probably do. I probably have done two thousand,
- 17:28Speaker 1: two hundred and twenty two push up probably last ten years,
- 17:32Speaker 1: maybe combine to promote healthy lifestyle living around the world.
- 17:36Speaker 1: Please welcome to my main conversation, my friend. Because when
- 17:39Speaker 1: you got twenty four by sels. You call him my friend,
- 17:43Speaker 1: Chef rush. Come on, my, this is this thing. Man.
- 17:51Speaker 1: If you do a two thousand push, you know your
- 17:56Speaker 1: your child like you know, you'd be living more bold
- 17:58Speaker 1: on what's going on? What's going because that's because anybody
- 18:04Speaker 1: you talk to, that's what I'm doing. Everybody you talk
- 18:09Speaker 1: to is humble by you. Okay, there's nobody at that.
- 18:14Speaker 1: How can you be at the Mr Olympia contest? Stay
- 18:17Speaker 1: humbled by you? Think? You don't just get down there,
- 18:21Speaker 1: just do what I do. I actually just left me
- 18:25Speaker 1: with the Olympia. No one know to do. Put a
- 18:29Speaker 1: couple of females here. But the guys is that we're okay.
- 18:33Speaker 1: We're okay. We we we got your brother, we got
- 18:35Speaker 1: your brother. I followed your story. I've seen your TV.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I love your your voice. Here, you have a brilliant smile.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Tell me a little bit about your background. Um, no
- 18:48Speaker 1: story short. I'm from the hospitality State, Mississippi, columb of Mississippi.
- 18:54Speaker 1: I'm a country boy. I'm a mama's boy. Um. When
- 18:57Speaker 1: I could crawled, my dad told me the word put
- 19:00Speaker 1: the boys to work and put the girls in school.
- 19:02Speaker 1: So I feel Luckily, I kept my work ethics which
- 19:06Speaker 1: they would never go away, which I'm extremely appreciative of.
- 19:10Speaker 1: UH started the military very athletic, you know, scholarships from art, football, track.
- 19:17Speaker 1: I had a chance for the Olympics in a hundred
- 19:20Speaker 1: meter dash. Chose the military route. UH served my country
- 19:25Speaker 1: of course, builtually did the twenty four years in the
- 19:28Speaker 1: military almost and he crazy duration. During my twenty years
- 19:37Speaker 1: in the military, the most humbling, most successful, most rewarding,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you know how to say. It was the best of times,
- 19:43Speaker 1: the worst of times. But I've never traded for anything.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Now now that I shared my experience, and I didn't.
- 19:50Speaker 1: I never enlisted in the military. I was only a
- 19:53Speaker 1: person who was brought on to understand a brand, marketing
- 19:57Speaker 1: brand and and see and tell peop about the value
- 20:01Speaker 1: of the of having a role in the military. The
- 20:04Speaker 1: branch I was talking about, what's the Air National Guard?
- 20:06Speaker 1: Your branch was the army? Correct? Okay? Cool? Now, now
- 20:11Speaker 1: you said you opted to go into the military. What
- 20:13Speaker 1: attracted you to the military, Because that's that's a job,
- 20:16Speaker 1: that's that's a that's an opportunity. A lot of people,
- 20:19Speaker 1: there's a lot of negative things people say about the military.
- 20:21Speaker 1: But because they don't really do their research, they don't
- 20:24Speaker 1: really see the opportunities that are available to you, not
- 20:27Speaker 1: only from an educational format, but you can it's kind
- 20:29Speaker 1: of like only job training as well, and also can
- 20:32Speaker 1: pay for your education later on. These are things I learned.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Some of the things I knew going in, but was
- 20:37Speaker 1: reinforced when you do more your research. Talked to us
- 20:40Speaker 1: about that a little bit, sir, And you know, it's
- 20:42Speaker 1: it's always a spigma with the military, just like what
- 20:45Speaker 1: my ever to see about the things I do with
- 20:47Speaker 1: my two balls and two hundred and twenty two push ups.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So I have to kind of break it down to
- 20:52Speaker 1: explain the people and uh and enlightened them so to speak,
- 20:57Speaker 1: the military, like you just said. And by the way,
- 20:59Speaker 1: thank you for your service. Even though you den serve
- 21:01Speaker 1: you you're you served tremendously through the military, and hundreds
- 21:05Speaker 1: of thousands of people that's in the military, that's that appreciated,
- 21:08Speaker 1: like myself. UM, that their opportunities, that's that's undeniable course
- 21:13Speaker 1: of foundation, leadership, mentoring, UH, that intestinal fortitude, financial course,
- 21:21Speaker 1: UH education. I tell people, even if you don't want
- 21:24Speaker 1: to join the military long term, which nine times out
- 21:28Speaker 1: of ten people say, I'm just after being convinced that okay,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I want to go ahead and pay the bills and
- 21:33Speaker 1: and give some education. H They signed them for two
- 21:37Speaker 1: or three years and wind up doing thirties. You know.
- 21:39Speaker 1: It's like I, I, you're here every time. I only
- 21:42Speaker 1: started off for a few years and and then I
- 21:45Speaker 1: love the military and I just carry it on. Is
- 21:48Speaker 1: so much more you can gain from it, um And
- 21:52Speaker 1: it's all perspectives. I mean, military has so many opportunities
- 21:56Speaker 1: that people don't dig deep inside to see everything that
- 22:00Speaker 1: they have. I mean, I mean not only hundreds of
- 22:03Speaker 1: thousands of opportunities like myself, even me deciding to be
- 22:07Speaker 1: in the food service star now, I said, hey, this
- 22:10Speaker 1: is what I wanted to do. Even even though people
- 22:14Speaker 1: were like someone, you're a big guy, you could do anything.
- 22:16Speaker 1: If you want to do the athletic, you can do X,
- 22:19Speaker 1: Y and Z. But I had a passion. You know.
- 22:23Speaker 1: It was from my mother, from being raised, you know,
- 22:25Speaker 1: and it was my comfort. It brought me back to
- 22:28Speaker 1: that part where I failed at peace the most so myself.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I capitalized all of my peace and off of what
- 22:36Speaker 1: I want to do and make it worth will and uh,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I said to myself. You know, twenty plus years ago,
- 22:42Speaker 1: I said, I'm going to do something with this platform.
- 22:46Speaker 1: And that was at a time where there was absolutely
- 22:49Speaker 1: nothing you could do with that platform. So that's how
- 22:52Speaker 1: things work. And that's why I go out to different
- 22:54Speaker 1: places all over the world, and I I say that
- 22:57Speaker 1: I preached that especially to the military, to the younger,
- 23:00Speaker 1: the older, to the ones who are getting now staying
- 23:03Speaker 1: in uh, civilians trying to transition, so many different so
- 23:07Speaker 1: many different things. I mean, it's I could talk all
- 23:09Speaker 1: day night about this, right and as you can. I
- 23:12Speaker 1: because of the fact that my my younger brother, he's uh,
- 23:14Speaker 1: he was in the military. Guy I was an X
- 23:17Speaker 1: ray tech and now he has four Barbara and Beauti
- 23:20Speaker 1: Stalons in the Washington, D c. Area. I have another
- 23:24Speaker 1: nephew who has a very popular Big six barbecue in Houston, Texas,
- 23:29Speaker 1: and every he visits, he comes to the lane his
- 23:31Speaker 1: little he says, guys he served, they always hook up
- 23:35Speaker 1: in Atlanta meet all the time. So it's that family,
- 23:37Speaker 1: the camaraderie that he has, not his high school comarades, comrades,
- 23:42Speaker 1: it's the people who had in the military. There's a
- 23:43Speaker 1: family to him that he comes to to Atlanta, because
- 23:46Speaker 1: it always stays with me when he comes into town.
- 23:48Speaker 1: So those are just two examples and my my personal
- 23:51Speaker 1: my personal life that I've tied myself to. And I
- 23:54Speaker 1: say that hundred and four percent, that recruitment number for
- 23:57Speaker 1: their National Guard. That's a prideful number when I say that,
- 24:00Speaker 1: because that means that I gave what I could. I
- 24:03Speaker 1: gave the talents that that they recognized that I had,
- 24:06Speaker 1: and I gave one. And so when you say you're
- 24:09Speaker 1: an advocate, know there are a lot of people who
- 24:10Speaker 1: think like you, respect what you're doing and keep doing
- 24:14Speaker 1: what you're doing all two hundred and Twitter two. Now,
- 24:17Speaker 1: I'm just gonna let you know two thousand, two hundred
- 24:19Speaker 1: and Twitter two. Don't want a short change about two
- 24:21Speaker 1: thousand that you know I can't get it. I could probably,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I could probably do that in the whole football game,
- 24:27Speaker 1: but I gotta take breaks, halftime breaks, two minute warnings.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Let's talk about your skill, man a self. Now, let's
- 24:36Speaker 1: because there was a lot of skills that you have here, sir. Okay,
- 24:39Speaker 1: I'm talking to chef for us very talented, uh young
- 24:43Speaker 1: man I've called young man who's younger than me. Who's uh,
- 24:46Speaker 1: let's talk about sculpturing ice. Okay, usual when I see that,
- 24:49Speaker 1: I see somebody with a chainsaw going at it. What
- 24:52Speaker 1: level of sculpturing do you involve yourself with? Well, I
- 24:57Speaker 1: just said it with my fists and then whatever I wanted.
- 25:00Speaker 1: You know, everybody, just everybody's doing you believe it. If
- 25:05Speaker 1: they believe you, now you can do a whole You
- 25:10Speaker 1: can do a whole moment on this. Okay, I've been
- 25:15Speaker 1: doing I've been doing ice. I see one of my
- 25:17Speaker 1: hobby from oh my god, years and years ago that
- 25:20Speaker 1: I knew nothing about that I count said that I did,
- 25:23Speaker 1: and and I was giving an opportunity and uh that's
- 25:26Speaker 1: when it was born. But I do mess ice carver.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I carved thousands of pieces of ice or help h
- 25:36Speaker 1: even that much more people train them on doing ice
- 25:39Speaker 1: and uh from um from Alaska competitions to Europe competitions
- 25:45Speaker 1: and ice carving to just general competitions anything if I
- 25:49Speaker 1: think of from George Washington crossing the Delaware to you know,
- 25:53Speaker 1: dragons to just it was just I just loved the
- 25:58Speaker 1: I love the set it to the ice scoping where
- 26:01Speaker 1: you can turn a block of ice into something that's
- 26:04Speaker 1: magnificent that people don't get to see every day. Believe me,
- 26:08Speaker 1: I want you to realize that this is a home
- 26:10Speaker 1: for you, for your brand. Believe me. Uh, just just
- 26:13Speaker 1: just a conversation, um, that I'm having with you is
- 26:16Speaker 1: like if you were sitting in my house and we
- 26:18Speaker 1: just with a restaurant. Just you. You You educated me.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Hopefully you've educated my listeners and people watch the show,
- 26:25Speaker 1: your podcast or Facebook. You're You're a blessing. Don't change.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate that you won't change, first of all,
- 26:33Speaker 1: but I'm telling you, don't change. Keep following that first start.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Keep being an advocate for change, Keep being somebody that
- 26:39Speaker 1: I can't be, be in places I can't be, and
- 26:43Speaker 1: we're both work together to change the world. Okay, chef,
- 26:47Speaker 1: thank you, sir, thank you. Hi. This is rou Sean

- 28:32Speaker 1: You're listening to money making conversations. Thank you, sir, thank
- 28:35Speaker 1: you for that wondrous interview. People want intro wondrous intro
- 28:39Speaker 1: to my show. My goal and hosting money Making Conversation
- 28:43Speaker 1: is to give business owners, employees, and everyday people information
- 28:46Speaker 1: that was successful, uplift your daily lives. That's my goal.
- 28:49Speaker 1: And I wish I could give you one word that
- 28:51Speaker 1: would motivate you to achieve endless success and happiness, but
- 28:54Speaker 1: that is not possible. To him, the truth is about
- 28:57Speaker 1: reaching your goal. Success is not easy. If it were,
- 29:00Speaker 1: then everybody will be wealthy and partying in Las Vegas.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I go to Las Vegas. I have a good time,
- 29:05Speaker 1: cost money to get there, so it means it's not
- 29:07Speaker 1: overcrowded except on New Year's Eve. You do not go
- 29:10Speaker 1: to Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. If you try
- 29:13Speaker 1: to walk around real quick, it's crazy down there. You
- 29:17Speaker 1: need to make personal sacrifices if you want to be successful.
- 29:19Speaker 1: I've learned that I make personal I think about the
- 29:22Speaker 1: sacrifice that I may that it could be. It could
- 29:24Speaker 1: be like spending time away from your family, um, spending
- 29:27Speaker 1: time with from the children, relocating. Those are sacrifices. That
- 29:30Speaker 1: a lot of people don't understand that they have to
- 29:33Speaker 1: make sometimes in order to achieve your dreams. Hey, I
- 29:36Speaker 1: lived originally from Houston, Texas. I live in New York
- 29:39Speaker 1: for two years, then I moved to l A, living
- 29:42Speaker 1: in the l A for fifteen years, and then moved
- 29:44Speaker 1: back to New York, lived there for two years and
- 29:46Speaker 1: eventually settled into Atlanta, Georgia. Now excuse me. Then I
- 29:51Speaker 1: lived in Chicago four years while I was living in Atlanta, Georgia.
- 29:54Speaker 1: So those are the sacrifices that I've made physically that
- 29:58Speaker 1: I didn't want to, but in order to fulfill my
- 30:00Speaker 1: dreams and my expectations, I had to make to be
- 30:02Speaker 1: where I'm am today. And I guess what, I think
- 30:06Speaker 1: I'll be moving again to New York because some deals
- 30:10Speaker 1: and I'm dealing so on the l A. I'll be
- 30:12Speaker 1: in l A this week to talk about some stuff.
- 30:13Speaker 1: So you know, again, there's are sacrifices that we all
- 30:16Speaker 1: have to make, and we all have to say I'm
- 30:18Speaker 1: publicly and other people to understand that that that you
- 30:21Speaker 1: have to do them too. If you don't tell them that,
- 30:22Speaker 1: then they think that life is easy. My next guest
- 30:25Speaker 1: is I call her the she's a publicist. She's a publicist.
- 30:29Speaker 1: You know, she's kind of like a ninja of publicists,
- 30:32Speaker 1: because I don't care. I could be standing there on
- 30:34Speaker 1: the red car and she walked here where you come from? Jesus,
- 30:39Speaker 1: she always was speakable. I've never seen her walk forwardly
- 30:42Speaker 1: towards Even if she walked towards me, I probably didn't
- 30:45Speaker 1: see her and didn't recognize that. She got upon and
- 30:47Speaker 1: said hello. She's just that that nice and that you know,
- 30:50Speaker 1: she's she knows how to be around celebrities and not
- 30:53Speaker 1: be seen and that which is really key to a
- 30:56Speaker 1: really good publicist. What is the publicist? What's the purpose
- 31:00Speaker 1: of publicists? My next guest will be able to answer
- 31:02Speaker 1: these questions and many more. This week, she's being honored
- 31:06Speaker 1: at the Living Levings Foundation Show and Darner which I
- 31:09Speaker 1: will be attending, which I will be taking myself. He's
- 31:11Speaker 1: with her on the red carpet in Los Angeles this week.
- 31:15Speaker 1: She has an award winning entertainment publicist with over twenty
- 31:18Speaker 1: five years of experience. She's also the senior vice person
- 31:21Speaker 1: of W and W public Relations, which has been which
- 31:24Speaker 1: has offices in New Jersey and Los Angeles. She represents artists, athletes,
- 31:29Speaker 1: including Charlie Wilson. We know Charlie Wilson, Come on now,
- 31:33Speaker 1: Bobby Brown, We know Bobby Brown, Come on now, Chris
- 31:36Speaker 1: Paul CP three, You know CP three, pad La Belle,
- 31:39Speaker 1: come on now. Sweepy Tator Patty Bell, that's what you know.
- 31:41Speaker 1: She's Sweet Petator, Patill, Peach, Cobblum, Pattbill Now and has
- 31:45Speaker 1: worked with world renowned talent including My boy Rusher, Holly Robinson,
- 31:50Speaker 1: Pete who are just attended her charity foundation on with
- 31:53Speaker 1: incredible husband Rodney Tupac, who I considered the greatest rapper
- 31:58Speaker 1: of all time. The question me on that, but I'm sorry,
- 32:01Speaker 1: stop sexy. You can do that party of music, you
- 32:06Speaker 1: can do that, you know, politically challenging music. He could
- 32:10Speaker 1: do that. That's what Tupac do. Tupac gave it all
- 32:14Speaker 1: and plus you remember these lyrics. That's what I love it.
- 32:16Speaker 1: But Prince, come on now, how many babies in the world?
- 32:20Speaker 1: This man and Brody please welcome to my the main conversation,
- 32:25Speaker 1: my girl Karen Lee. Thank you for having me, Chell
- 32:30Speaker 1: and I appreciate it. Thank you, good morning, well, good
- 32:33Speaker 1: morning here, and thank this boy talking about everybody, but
- 32:38Speaker 1: you don't telling the truth. I'm telling the absolute truth
- 32:40Speaker 1: about the people you that you have represented and you
- 32:44Speaker 1: currently represent before we get started. Congratulations on being honored
- 32:49Speaker 1: at the Living Legends Foundation dinner. Thank you so much.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I appreciate that um and being honored with the others
- 32:58Speaker 1: ten people being honored, and being with nine other people
- 33:01Speaker 1: who I have a tremendous amount of respect for and
- 33:04Speaker 1: who have all worked together to jointly mature the artists
- 33:08Speaker 1: we worked with move forward in their koreas as an
- 33:10Speaker 1: honor as well. Absolutely, I know my man Frank Ski,
- 33:13Speaker 1: he's out of Atlanta, He's being honored. Hyman childs my
- 33:18Speaker 1: man out of out of the Dallas market, one of
- 33:21Speaker 1: the first market radio station to gage Steve Harvey syndication,
- 33:25Speaker 1: and the syndication changed. Hyman Child's being honored. My man
- 33:28Speaker 1: Steve Hegwood. And I tell you Steve Hegwood taught me
- 33:30Speaker 1: radio from a standpoint of how to deal with These
- 33:33Speaker 1: are the people being honored with Karen On at the
- 33:36Speaker 1: Living Legends Foundation and Steve Heckwood. In two thousand when
- 33:40Speaker 1: I got the first contract deal with with Steve Harvey
- 33:43Speaker 1: for Radio one, Steve Heckwood showed me how to do radio.
- 33:46Speaker 1: And it was after that Phil Thorn, my man out
- 33:50Speaker 1: of Nashville, cheat of coats, be your own brand. Uh,
- 33:54Speaker 1: it's just my boy sitting the middle. I came boy
- 33:57Speaker 1: Sittlor Miller heard this interview and I didn't mention his name.
- 33:59Speaker 1: He beat me up. Oh yeah, Deanna Williams some some
- 34:06Speaker 1: some major thoughts that people don't know anything about, but
- 34:10Speaker 1: that are very responsible success of artists. And that's the
- 34:15Speaker 1: that's the I'm gonna tell you something about the Living
- 34:17Speaker 1: Legends Foundation. Living Legends Foundation arnored me, uh several years ago,
- 34:22Speaker 1: and and and so it was out of the blue,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but they just called me. And and so you know,
- 34:28Speaker 1: everybody knows my career has been a major portion of
- 34:30Speaker 1: my career has been in the background, building Steve Harvey's
- 34:33Speaker 1: brand and working with sponsors, working with advertising, high profile
- 34:38Speaker 1: fortune companies. And when they called me and said, Rashaan,
- 34:42Speaker 1: we wanted on you, it really took me back because
- 34:44Speaker 1: it took me took me back because I didn't understand
- 34:46Speaker 1: what they were talking about. And but that's what this
- 34:49Speaker 1: show does. It awards people who really are the backbone
- 34:53Speaker 1: of the industry. That keeps it moving forward. It keeps
- 34:55Speaker 1: that they're they're not in front of the mic, they're
- 34:58Speaker 1: not trying to see got interviews, but they're so key
- 35:02Speaker 1: to move forward. When I see this list, when I
- 35:04Speaker 1: see all these names, Sidney Miller, ain't a Williams, him
- 35:08Speaker 1: and child, Frank Ski, Maurice White, my boy, I forgot
- 35:10Speaker 1: his name. Oh, I gotta see him on Karen Lee,
- 35:13Speaker 1: She the coach, Phil Thorn and Steve Hegwood and Debora Intate,
- 35:18Speaker 1: the dedre uh Tate, Kate who was part of Flavory
- 35:23Speaker 1: Union Records before Queen Queen Latifa is who she is today. Yeah,
- 35:30Speaker 1: being honored on Friday, and I feel very honored to
- 35:32Speaker 1: be a part of that group. Girl, you deserve to
- 35:36Speaker 1: be a part of the group. But let's ask you
- 35:38Speaker 1: some questions. I want my listeners to understand, Like, because
- 35:41Speaker 1: a lot of people to get these by pr firms,
- 35:43Speaker 1: you hear by public What exactly is a publicist? Karen?
- 35:46Speaker 1: Please tell us what explain that you have to TWI
- 35:48Speaker 1: years experience? What exactly is a publicist? You come into
- 35:53Speaker 1: an artist and athlete a company, Um, if you start
- 35:57Speaker 1: out with artists, My background is primarily in music and sports.
- 36:01Speaker 1: You come in uh to meet with the artists, talk
- 36:05Speaker 1: to them, Okay, what are your goals? What do you
- 36:08Speaker 1: want to achieve professionally and personally, and you help them,
- 36:12Speaker 1: together with their team, put together a plan that helps
- 36:16Speaker 1: them meet their goal. And one of the primary things
- 36:19Speaker 1: about their plan is the patience to know it's not
- 36:22Speaker 1: gonna happen overnight. Well, that's very true. I know that
- 36:27Speaker 1: because a lot of Also, let's gonna put a lot
- 36:30Speaker 1: of people want to publicists but don't want to pay. Yeah,
- 36:33Speaker 1: that's true, very true. Let's go and get that out there.
- 36:36Speaker 1: They want that promotion, but they don't want to play
- 36:38Speaker 1: the price for a really good one because they think
- 36:40Speaker 1: it's it's a lot of disrespect, I would say to
- 36:44Speaker 1: for publicists and the actually what they accomplished on an
- 36:47Speaker 1: ongoing basis correct or yes, because people think we'll shoot.
- 36:51Speaker 1: All they gotta do is pick up the phone and
- 36:53Speaker 1: make a couple of calls to somebody because everybody wants
- 36:55Speaker 1: to talk to me and I'm missing I'm that They
- 36:58Speaker 1: don't always understand the business, especially now the business has
- 37:02Speaker 1: changed a lot. Social media can be your friend or
- 37:05Speaker 1: your enemy, and you make that decision. A publicist can
- 37:09Speaker 1: help work with your management team, your agents. Okay, we're
- 37:13Speaker 1: going out on tour. What do we want to do
- 37:15Speaker 1: on that tour? Wouldn't want to leave in that community.
- 37:18Speaker 1: We don't want to just go in, do a show,
- 37:21Speaker 1: say hey, thank you, and walk away. You can't do that.
- 37:24Speaker 1: People nowadays want to know a bit more about the
- 37:27Speaker 1: people they spend their money to see, and you try
- 37:30Speaker 1: to help develop the talent in order to make their
- 37:34Speaker 1: career be have some longevity to it and not just
- 37:37Speaker 1: be a flesh in Japan or one album hit. Well,
- 37:41Speaker 1: you know, also you're paying for, especially an individual like
- 37:44Speaker 1: you who's been in the business twenty five years, you're
- 37:47Speaker 1: paying for your relationships. And relationships are very important because
- 37:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you this, when I was managing Steve Harvey,
- 37:55Speaker 1: my relationships that I had with the media were very important.
- 37:59Speaker 1: I can get in views, I could kill interviews, I
- 38:02Speaker 1: could do I can move interviews around. I can be
- 38:05Speaker 1: able to say, hey, can we can we delay this
- 38:07Speaker 1: because I need to get this done first, and I
- 38:10Speaker 1: could actually talk to them. So they're paying for that
- 38:12Speaker 1: as well, and that's very important. Correct, Oh no, it's
- 38:16Speaker 1: extremely important. Because you, you and a publicist and journalists
- 38:21Speaker 1: have to have some trust in each other. You can't
- 38:24Speaker 1: panic when there's something going on with your client that's
- 38:28Speaker 1: not necessarily the most positive thing in the world. The
- 38:31Speaker 1: relationship you have with the journalists is going to determine
- 38:35Speaker 1: how hardcore that interview is going to be. You know,
- 38:38Speaker 1: it's really interesting you said that because the game has
- 38:41Speaker 1: changed so much and all started managing Steve Harvey in
- 38:43Speaker 1: two thousand and now start there's a new breed of
- 38:48Speaker 1: stars out there that directors are stars now, Executive produces
- 38:53Speaker 1: are stars now, writers and stars now. It just used
- 38:56Speaker 1: to be just the people in front of the camera
- 38:58Speaker 1: where the stars. Publicists are stars now, managers are stars now. Really,
- 39:04Speaker 1: so really, the it's really is a re education to
- 39:07Speaker 1: the whole process now because social media have made these
- 39:10Speaker 1: people stars. So your client lists has kind of like
- 39:13Speaker 1: grown as an opportunity to increase your client lists has grown. Yes,
- 39:18Speaker 1: as long as we take the time to understand who
- 39:21Speaker 1: the client is by speaking to them, by get beginning
- 39:25Speaker 1: a strong relationship with their management, so they we understand
- 39:30Speaker 1: where they want to go and we help them create
- 39:32Speaker 1: the road to get there. Because the other thing about
- 39:36Speaker 1: a publicist. You're not right about everything. You're part of
- 39:39Speaker 1: a team. You want your artists to understand. And one
- 39:43Speaker 1: of the key things that every artist wants to know
- 39:46Speaker 1: is that they can trust you because there's going to
- 39:49Speaker 1: come a time, at some point in time in their
- 39:51Speaker 1: career where something happens, whether it's positive or negative, that's
- 39:55Speaker 1: about their personal life that they do not want to share.
- 39:58Speaker 1: They have to be able to trust that you won't
- 40:01Speaker 1: do that. And that's a hard thing to do because
- 40:03Speaker 1: you're talking about somebody they really haven't known that long
- 40:07Speaker 1: and haven't been in a situation where they have to say, well,
- 40:12Speaker 1: you know what, let me call her because I know
- 40:14Speaker 1: she's gonna get this. I know she'll trust and I
- 40:16Speaker 1: know I'm not gonna hear about it again. And I
- 40:19Speaker 1: think that's a very important trait to have with your client.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Is their trust. That's the utmost importance. I'm telling you
- 40:27Speaker 1: that that's beyond utmost. It's the only thing that's important.
- 40:30Speaker 1: Because if I trust you with my brain, I trust
- 40:33Speaker 1: you with my name, then guess what we can get along.
- 40:35Speaker 1: If I can't trust you that, I guess what we
- 40:38Speaker 1: have no relationship. I'm talking to Karen Lyn the Incredible.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Currently she's being recognized by the Living Legends Foundations with
- 40:44Speaker 1: their Media Award in Los Angeles. I'll be there carrying
- 40:48Speaker 1: you know, we'll be on the red carpet together. I
- 40:50Speaker 1: might tell you where you're going. You need to be
- 40:52Speaker 1: on that record. So far to seeing you, Okay, thank
- 40:56Speaker 1: you for coming. So looking forward to seeing your Roshan.
- 40:59Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna change little role here. I would be
- 41:01Speaker 1: a publicist. I'm gonna be a publicist for Karen Lee
- 41:05Speaker 1: at the at this event, you'd be safe and I
- 41:08Speaker 1: look forward to smiling with you. Hey, this is Tasha Evans.
- 41:18Speaker 1: And I love to eat a great restaurant and more
- 41:20Speaker 1: than that, I love great desserts. So does Rashaan McDonald.
- 41:24Speaker 1: Check out his new website that's www Rashan McDonald dot com.
- 41:28Speaker 1: That's r U s h i O N and McDonald
- 41:31Speaker 1: is spelled just like the famous restaurant chain guys. Rashawn
- 41:35Speaker 1: is looking for great bakers for his baker's spotlight. He
- 41:37Speaker 1: wants to brag on his fans for their incredible baking
- 41:39Speaker 1: skills on his social media and website. That can be
- 41:42Speaker 1: your mom, friend, co worker, a relative spread the word today.
- 41:47Speaker 1: This Rashan McDonald, you're listening to money Making Conversation. This
- 41:50Speaker 1: your show. It really is your show with the show
- 41:53Speaker 1: that I put together with um my life, my life
- 41:57Speaker 1: about the experiences that I've lived in, the people I've
- 42:00Speaker 1: met in the relationship that I've cultivated over the years
- 42:03Speaker 1: to tell you and invite them on the show. People
- 42:05Speaker 1: I don't know, people I've I've learned to know, and
- 42:08Speaker 1: people are learned that know me that I didn't know
- 42:10Speaker 1: they know me. And that's impossible to consider based on
- 42:13Speaker 1: the life that I that I've started with filth War
- 42:16Speaker 1: Texas UH. Father truck driver, MoMA, high school graduate, successors,
- 42:22Speaker 1: two brothers, to bear room, shotgun house. That's what you
- 42:25Speaker 1: can get if you believe and you have faith. And
- 42:27Speaker 1: that's what money Making Conversation is. What's more important about
- 42:30Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation is the people I bring on the show, CEOs, entertainers, UH,
- 42:35Speaker 1: small businesses, industry decision makers. They come on the show
- 42:39Speaker 1: and to share their life story, their life story about
- 42:42Speaker 1: what makes them unique, what makes makes their success story
- 42:46Speaker 1: something you should hear about on this show Money Making Conversation.
- 42:48Speaker 1: My next guest, he's live in Studio Today, as recently
- 42:51Speaker 1: started in the stars comedy Serious Survivors Remorse and which
- 42:56Speaker 1: he was nominated for several n double A CP Image Awards.
- 42:59Speaker 1: He's started to be et comedy series Let's Stay Together
- 43:02Speaker 1: Up and Such a Sister. That's when we bonded many
- 43:05Speaker 1: many years ago, ABC's in the Motherhood, and had a
- 43:08Speaker 1: recording role on Foxes The Good Guys. His breakout role
- 43:11Speaker 1: was opposite Denzel Washington in the award winning feature of Glory,
- 43:14Speaker 1: and he started opposite by Alla Davis and Tyler Perry's
- 43:17Speaker 1: madea Goes to Jail. He's on the show today to
- 43:20Speaker 1: talk about this new b et plus First Wives Clubs.
- 43:24Speaker 1: First Wives Clubs Hilaria's new nine episode comedy series that
- 43:27Speaker 1: follows a group of women living in New York City
- 43:30Speaker 1: who created a sisterhood as a result of they failed
- 43:32Speaker 1: marriage trials and tribulations. Please work on the money making conversations.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I know it's called a little brother, good friend, men tes,
- 43:41Speaker 1: all of those things. More importantly, this is I told
- 43:43Speaker 1: him before the show this I was. I was reluctant
- 43:47Speaker 1: to have him sitting next to me because I love
- 43:49Speaker 1: him so much, and I was I would try to
- 43:51Speaker 1: get him the call live, but he showed up anyway.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Please welcome to the show, ron Rico late oh man studio. Man, Man,
- 43:58Speaker 1: you got me feeling old. Man took it back to
- 44:01Speaker 1: glory and oh my goodness. Man, guy's good man. I've
- 44:05Speaker 1: been I've been in the game. I mean, you're working actor.
- 44:07Speaker 1: It means you're a small business person. That's true. And
- 44:10Speaker 1: that's why I've been letting people know who coming, specially
- 44:12Speaker 1: when entertainment, because I didn't really understand the value because
- 44:16Speaker 1: of social media. You know, it makes you, guys be
- 44:19Speaker 1: entrepreneurs because you can sell your brand and market your
- 44:22Speaker 1: brand and you have the statement, how's the effect of
- 44:24Speaker 1: social media had? You know, because you started before social man,
- 44:28Speaker 1: long before it. Uh you know, I was reluctant. I
- 44:31Speaker 1: fought toothing now. I mean when I was doing uh,
- 44:34Speaker 1: let's stay together, man, you gotta get it. But I
- 44:38Speaker 1: ain't doing nothing. I came here. I'm gonna act, That's
- 44:40Speaker 1: what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna go home. I'm gonna
- 44:42Speaker 1: share with my family and uh man, when people was
- 44:45Speaker 1: opening up fake accounts and I was laughing about it
- 44:47Speaker 1: or whatever, and the ND this one individual started to
- 44:50Speaker 1: really interact with people. I think I was that the
- 44:53Speaker 1: Neighborhood Awards one and uh he was was responding TOIL
- 44:57Speaker 1: believe it was LaToya lucking on my behalf and some
- 45:00Speaker 1: might like, hit me up. I think it's my man.
- 45:01Speaker 1: Christian Keys was like, hey man, you really need to
- 45:03Speaker 1: do something about this because whoever this is, this dude
- 45:06Speaker 1: is seriously impersonate, ain't you. And so I opened up
- 45:08Speaker 1: my first account, and uh, you know, it's one of
- 45:11Speaker 1: the things, you know, I'm trying to get better at
- 45:13Speaker 1: it because it is a necessary I don't wanna call
- 45:16Speaker 1: it evil, but it's definitely one of those things that
- 45:18Speaker 1: you have to be on top of your game and
- 45:20Speaker 1: the cross social media, but especially today because sometimes it
- 45:23Speaker 1: can determine jobs. It breaks my heart, but yes, you know,
- 45:26Speaker 1: they're looking at your funds, they're looking at your your feed,
- 45:29Speaker 1: and they kind of they're seeing what type of reach
- 45:31Speaker 1: you have. And so, yeah, there's somebody that's kind more
- 45:33Speaker 1: reached than you. That's that that that's just so true.
- 45:38Speaker 1: And that's so that doesn't necessarily mean that they have
- 45:40Speaker 1: the working skills, all the chops, but because engagement um
- 45:46Speaker 1: followers mean something part your eyeballs and has never been
- 45:49Speaker 1: proven that is the case, because otherwise a lot of
- 45:52Speaker 1: these people, these amazing following basis will have platinum albums
- 45:57Speaker 1: and want her to me in all the movies. But
- 45:59Speaker 1: it does say something that people do resonate with your voice,
- 46:02Speaker 1: with your bread and so so that's something you're working
- 46:05Speaker 1: on as a businessman. You're working on that. More importantly,
- 46:08Speaker 1: I wanted to talk about something I felt miserably good,
- 46:11Speaker 1: the balance life. You know, and uh and and you
- 46:14Speaker 1: you talk about that whenever we talked about having the
- 46:16Speaker 1: balance life, talk about being able to deal with being
- 46:20Speaker 1: a celebrity. They are working actor and having a balanced life.
- 46:23Speaker 1: You know, it's tough. I got married, I got two kids,
- 46:26Speaker 1: I got a four year old and five year old. Um,
- 46:28Speaker 1: you know part of why I actually uh and actually
- 46:31Speaker 1: because of you. I remember when uh, when we first
- 46:34Speaker 1: really started working again, you kind of too many your wing.
- 46:36Speaker 1: I was amazed at the fact that you had a
- 46:38Speaker 1: really nice place in l A. I loved it. You
- 46:41Speaker 1: had two cards, you had your airport card, and you
- 46:43Speaker 1: had this nice truck. And you see him and I
- 46:45Speaker 1: take the airport. I just drive out to the airport
- 46:47Speaker 1: on Fridays after the show, and then I shoot back
- 46:50Speaker 1: home Monday morning. I said, man, you can do that,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I Sae, you can live in Houston and work in
- 46:54Speaker 1: l As. I never get he said, ron Rico, you
- 46:57Speaker 1: ain't got to give l A all your money and
- 46:58Speaker 1: I and it always stuck in my head. So I said,
- 47:01Speaker 1: when I could, it's gonna caught me a career back
- 47:03Speaker 1: in the A. Get that in two thousand and eleven, um.
- 47:07Speaker 1: And then what happened was, you know, the BT show
- 47:09Speaker 1: I was doing, Let's Stay Together is shot here, and
- 47:11Speaker 1: I literally was blessed to walk right out of that.
- 47:13Speaker 1: In the survivrashy More it's it's shot here, and a
- 47:15Speaker 1: few other gigs that I had here. So my family
- 47:17Speaker 1: got really used to dad, you know, going to work
- 47:19Speaker 1: and coming home and um. And so now I traveled
- 47:22Speaker 1: a little bit more. It's been it's been adjustment. But listen,
- 47:24Speaker 1: it's been many of days where I've gone to work
- 47:26Speaker 1: on a Friday morning and realized I had, you know
- 47:29Speaker 1: that evening off and flew home, really booked a flight right,
- 47:32Speaker 1: went straight from work to the airport, flew home later
- 47:35Speaker 1: for one day. I'm back, you know, back at the
- 47:37Speaker 1: Airport Sunday. So you know, you just kind of suck
- 47:39Speaker 1: it up. You do what you gotta do to get
- 47:41Speaker 1: back to the family. It's tough, but it's it's you know,
- 47:45Speaker 1: it's what you gotta do. So I try to keep
- 47:47Speaker 1: a balance and been fortunately to do so. It's really
- 47:50Speaker 1: important because of the fact that what's that shutdown time?
- 47:53Speaker 1: Because if you throw to the brand and we just entertainment,
- 47:57Speaker 1: it can be fracturing. You know. We we think we
- 48:00Speaker 1: headed down this road and of longevity, and they can
- 48:03Speaker 1: pull the carpet on it. That's why that balances. And boy,
- 48:08Speaker 1: I was I was looking at Jobio and so it
- 48:10Speaker 1: was talking about directing. Yes, okay, and that's I read
- 48:13Speaker 1: that now. Just my eyes went, okay, I gotta talk
- 48:15Speaker 1: to him about this. Talk to me about um. I
- 48:18Speaker 1: don't you know if has kept I've been one of
- 48:20Speaker 1: the direct now that you mentioned it, man, one of
- 48:22Speaker 1: the second film I did was Glory Uh with Denzel
- 48:26Speaker 1: you know ez a Wig director that Matthew Brodery and
- 48:28Speaker 1: Morgan Freeman starts, you know, the Stelly cast. But I
- 48:31Speaker 1: can honestly say I was interested in directing back then.
- 48:33Speaker 1: I remember coming back and comes to my friends and man,
- 48:35Speaker 1: we're gonna make a little movie. And I had to
- 48:37Speaker 1: contests man the Fisher Price. You know Fisher prices, but
- 48:41Speaker 1: Fisher Price made this little cheap cam quarter uh. And
- 48:44Speaker 1: basically I was like, this is what we're gonna do,
- 48:45Speaker 1: ma'nna put you. I think it was my home. I
- 48:47Speaker 1: had a homebo ain't Joe and harwe ain't Leon. I said, John,
- 48:49Speaker 1: put you in this shopping cart, man, and we're gonna
- 48:51Speaker 1: do a dolly shot and we're just gonna roll down
- 48:53Speaker 1: the sidewalk. It's like eleven or two years old, so
- 48:56Speaker 1: it's been in my blood. One of the direct man
- 48:58Speaker 1: every show minus Sisters, said Stir. He didn't really start
- 49:01Speaker 1: to like bets Let's stay together. I started biting at
- 49:04Speaker 1: the bit man, trying to get them to let me direct.
- 49:06Speaker 1: It didn't work out. Begging on Survivors and Wars. You know,
- 49:09Speaker 1: we're gonna let you do. You know, fifth season, fifth season.
- 49:12Speaker 1: I didn't get a fifth season, so I can't get
- 49:13Speaker 1: a chance to direct there. But I was fortunate to
- 49:15Speaker 1: direct the short film Um. Actually one of my coach
- 49:18Speaker 1: stars Jessie Usher, another good brother, Kelling the King. They
- 49:22Speaker 1: formed the production company got hold of a really really
- 49:24Speaker 1: nice short film and I literally had told I said, listen,
- 49:28Speaker 1: I realized that, you know, you got put stuff out
- 49:30Speaker 1: in the universe. And when that opportunity come now, you know.
- 49:33Speaker 1: And I had said no to a few other things,
- 49:35Speaker 1: but I said to myself, I said, God, if I'm
- 49:37Speaker 1: giving the opportunity to direct, I don't care what it is,
- 49:40Speaker 1: I'm saying yes, sight unseen. And I did. When they
- 49:42Speaker 1: called me if, I was like, yea, I ain't read
- 49:44Speaker 1: the script. I was just like, I'm gonna do it.
- 49:46Speaker 1: And it was a heavy piece. It was a dramatic piece,
- 49:48Speaker 1: but it confirmed everything in me, like directing is that's
- 49:52Speaker 1: what I want to do. Now let's go back to
- 49:54Speaker 1: you and I let um, you know, um young talent.
- 50:01Speaker 1: The guy comes in, Yeah, still young and talent when
- 50:06Speaker 1: that resume says otherwise, and we cast you as a
- 50:12Speaker 1: love interest for one of the twins Tea in Tomorrow,
- 50:15Speaker 1: and and it was just it was like really big opportunity,
- 50:20Speaker 1: but there was no guarantees and you just was to me,
- 50:23Speaker 1: was just on on this huge learning curve. I just
- 50:26Speaker 1: wanted to soak up so much information tell us about
- 50:29Speaker 1: that that time frame and leading up to where you're
- 50:32Speaker 1: at right now. Well, if I was a fish out
- 50:33Speaker 1: of water, man, I think I had blown a audition
- 50:36Speaker 1: probably a month before. For motion, I had froze up
- 50:41Speaker 1: and got all the way to produce a session of
- 50:42Speaker 1: those y'all don't know. Producer session is like like the
- 50:46Speaker 1: final final audition, and and if you're not if you've
- 50:50Speaker 1: never been in one, it can be very overwhelming. That room,
- 50:53Speaker 1: you know, probably had you can have anywhere from ten
- 50:56Speaker 1: to fifteen people, writers, directors and lots of friend Johnson
- 50:59Speaker 1: was right in there, so it was it was overwhelming,
- 51:02Speaker 1: and I did I kind of folded under pressure. So
- 51:05Speaker 1: my sister sister came around. I remember saying, listen, if
- 51:08Speaker 1: I get this opportunity again, I'm knocking out the park
- 51:11Speaker 1: and uh it Rashan. He made it sound real simple,
- 51:13Speaker 1: like I came in audition, I got cast. N they
- 51:16Speaker 1: made your boy jump through the hoops. I probably had
- 51:19Speaker 1: four auditions before I got to read with tire and um,
- 51:23Speaker 1: you know, I got cast, and uh I think even
- 51:25Speaker 1: the first day it was it was an adjustment because
- 51:29Speaker 1: I you know, four camera sitcom is a different beat.
- 51:31Speaker 1: You know, I had started off doing movies in Georgia.
- 51:34Speaker 1: So all those things like they just they didn't compare
- 51:37Speaker 1: like what you have to know, the beats, the energy,
- 51:40Speaker 1: the timing, all of that was just new to me.
- 51:42Speaker 1: And and I did. I hung around a lot. They
- 51:45Speaker 1: brought Dean Richmond in probably later that your Cosmy show played,
- 51:49Speaker 1: but and um, and he was great. He was you know,
- 51:53Speaker 1: he was you know, we were closer in age. And
- 51:55Speaker 1: I learned a lot from him. I learned a lot
- 51:57Speaker 1: from him. But it took me a minute to find
- 51:59Speaker 1: like what's my funny gonna be? And and you helped
- 52:02Speaker 1: me with that, because when you're around really that's that's listen,
- 52:06Speaker 1: when you're around funny people. And if you watch really
- 52:09Speaker 1: like talented people, um like Martin for example, if you
- 52:12Speaker 1: watched that show a lot of Martin's you know martinisms,
- 52:16Speaker 1: if you will, uh, it becomes infectious and other people
- 52:19Speaker 1: will start to kind of inhabit his his way of
- 52:21Speaker 1: being funny. And you see it a lot of times.
- 52:23Speaker 1: And one of the things I always say to Rashaan
- 52:26Speaker 1: in the in the nicest way, he let me know
- 52:28Speaker 1: that the role that I was going down to kind
- 52:31Speaker 1: of find my comedy, it wasn't right like in other words,
- 52:33Speaker 1: I was really just kind of emulating Dion a lot
- 52:36Speaker 1: of times to to kind of to kind of hit
- 52:39Speaker 1: my jokes. And Rashan pulled me to the side one
- 52:41Speaker 1: day we was at craft service. He sat me down
- 52:43Speaker 1: on these stages and I don't know what he's gonna say.
- 52:46Speaker 1: I don't in my fire, am I what what's going on?
- 52:48Speaker 1: And he in the most loving like big brother, I'm
- 52:50Speaker 1: gonna give you some constructive criticism that it might stink
- 52:54Speaker 1: a little bit right now, but brother, man on down
- 52:57Speaker 1: the road, you're really gonna be appreciative. And let me
- 52:59Speaker 1: tell you one of the best piece of advices anyone
- 53:02Speaker 1: has ever given me. And you just told me, listen,
- 53:04Speaker 1: here's your position, here's his position. He can't play your position,
- 53:08Speaker 1: you can't play, so you just define your position and
- 53:12Speaker 1: play it. And you did, and you did. Brother. That
- 53:15Speaker 1: was some like key advice in my career at a
- 53:17Speaker 1: young age to just make sure I kind of forged
- 53:20Speaker 1: my own path. And and you've been doing it ever since.
- 53:24Speaker 1: And that's the beauty of it. What basically, I was
- 53:26Speaker 1: just telling them just listen, just listen. And that's why
- 53:29Speaker 1: a lot of actors fail. They come in with these
- 53:31Speaker 1: uh pre made up notions off going his role and
- 53:34Speaker 1: we do it like it's not listening. And one of
- 53:36Speaker 1: his greatest skill set is his ability to comprehend the moment.
- 53:40Speaker 1: That's one I saw that right off. I went, if
- 53:42Speaker 1: you were just listen to the scene, then he would win.
- 53:45Speaker 1: And that's all the stop stop thinking, you gotta be
- 53:48Speaker 1: this and loud. The scene there evolved and he just
- 53:51Speaker 1: was just been fantastic everything. That's why you can share
- 53:54Speaker 1: a scene watchcase. Back then I had to say that
- 53:58Speaker 1: that was mute, but but no, it was. It was. Man,
- 54:01Speaker 1: such a valuable lesson. That's just one of many that
- 54:04Speaker 1: you've that you've been partnered on me. Man, thank you
- 54:07Speaker 1: for coming into my world and come on forwarding me
- 54:10Speaker 1: on money making conversations. I love your brother, say that.
- 54:14Speaker 1: I really say that, because Wow, this is a hard
- 54:16Speaker 1: interview for me to do personally, because it's like watching
- 54:20Speaker 1: the family member that that that I so cared about
- 54:25Speaker 1: and then then had to walk away and let you
- 54:27Speaker 1: do your thing and to come in the office, come
- 54:29Speaker 1: into this space and say, man, I love you, and
- 54:31Speaker 1: you see you love it back to you. It's a
- 54:33Speaker 1: pleasure being here at any time. Man, you just you
- 54:36Speaker 1: ain't gotta do nothing. Just called me cool. Money making conversation, y'all.
