- 0:00All right, welcome back to another episode of Run Mountain
- 0:04Peaks. If you're watching this, you may
- 0:07be wondering like, hey, this is not your normal studio setup.
- 0:13What's going on? I was robbed.
- 0:17No. Well, actually kind of this week
- 0:19at work, broad daylight Canal Street in Manchester, Somebody
- 0:24Hacked Off my catalytic converter and like half of my
- 0:28exhaust pipe. So I'm in a rental and it is
- 0:32it's actually a brand new 2025. I think it's called Ram Master.
- 0:39So it's a RAM and it's just like an empty cargo van.
- 0:42The thing is huge. When I first was driving, I was
- 0:46like, this is like a bus. But yeah, so we're in the van
- 0:51today. So special van edition.
- 0:54I didn't trade my entire life in and go van life, although this
- 0:58is giving me little thoughts, but no.
- 1:02So we're in the van today and we got a few things on the that
- 1:06we're going to chat about. S 1st up is the Pemi loop and
- 1:12specifically the Pemi loop FKT. There were a couple FKT goes
- 1:17recently. So we're going to talk through
- 1:19some of the times, look at maybe a couple different splits, and
- 1:23then I'm just going to talk about like how I think about
- 1:26running a fast Pemi loop. So we'll talk about the Pemi.
- 1:30I'm going to talk a little bit more about Run Mountain Peaks
- 1:34and kind of why I started Run Mountain Peaks and like where I
- 1:38think maybe it's headed because I feel like I'm still pretty new
- 1:41IT, you know, the podcast, the YouTube channel and stuff.
- 1:43So I'm going to talk about that a little bit.
- 1:46Going to talk about deer hunting, which is some people
- 1:50are going to be like, what? Huh.
- 1:52Yeah, going to talk a little bit about deer hunting and then
- 1:55Bubba's happened last weekend, so we're going to run through
- 1:59the results. I did a little bit of a preview
- 2:02last week and I talked a little bit about last man standing
- 2:04stuff. So we'll just run through the
- 2:06results of Bubba's and that'll be kind of wrap up actually.
- 2:11Also, I'm going to have a little Tecumseh story too at the end.
- 2:14I ran Tecumseh last week, rolled my ankle, which luckily is doing
- 2:20better now. And then I have a little
- 2:23Tecumseh was the 1st 4K ever did.
- 2:25So I'll tell that story briefly. So that's what we got on the
- 2:29agenda today. So the Pemi Loop, the Pemi Loop,
- 2:34FKT, one of the premier FKTS in the White Mountains.
- 2:39And I think over time, there's been a lot of, in the last
- 2:45handful of years, there's been a ton of action on the Pemi Loop.
- 2:48A ton of sluggers have came out and run super fast times on it.
- 2:52And I think that time is just so, so stout at this point.
- 2:59And so recently David Sinclair, who I feel like had a huge year,
- 3:05popped onto the scene second at CCC this year, which is just
- 3:09insane. He ran the boot spur throw down
- 3:14earlier this year and did a crazy VK on that.
- 3:17Just a world class runner. He came out and ran a 536 in
- 3:22change on the Pemi loop, I think in the past week.
- 3:27So just blazing Matt Chorney came out in the last I think
- 3:33month and he ran a 537. So both within 10 minutes of the
- 3:37FKT. So I think it's, yeah, good time
- 3:40to talk about the the Pemi loop and kind of how I think about
- 3:43it. So there's kind of two FKTS for
- 3:47the Pemi loops. And this is, I'm going to
- 3:49specifically talk about the men's time because there's been
- 3:52a lot more, I think recent goes on the men's Pemi loop.
- 3:55The women's is I think about 6:30, Britta Clark.
- 3:58And she's had that for a while, so also super stout.
- 4:04But yeah, today we're going to talk about some of the men's
- 4:06times. So the supported men's time is
- 4:11Jordan Fields. I think you ran it in 2019 or
- 4:142020. And I think the story goes he
- 4:19was with a buddy and they kind of went out on a training run.
- 4:22They were going to run the Pemi loop and up at like Bon Cliff
- 4:27and they started for a, for a training run.
- 4:29They were running very fast at the beginning, but at Bon Cliff
- 4:33he was like, wow, we're we're running like pretty fast.
- 4:35We're on pace. I'm going to try to get the FKT.
- 4:38And so he went for it that day, ended up finishing.
- 4:42But because he ran it with somebody for the 1st 8 miles or
- 4:48whatever, it's technically a supported effort.
- 4:52So it's he ran a 527 and on the FKT website it's technically
- 4:58supported even though it wasn't like he had like aid stations or
- 5:02like drop bags or anything like that.
- 5:04It was just he ran with somebody at the beginning, was feeling
- 5:06good and then he went for it. And then the unsupported time,
- 5:10Jack Kenzel came and ran this I think a little bit after Jordan,
- 5:14a year or so after Jordan, he ran like a 535.
- 5:18So he missed Jordan's time, but technically got a new
- 5:21unsupported FKT. And then a couple years after
- 5:24that, maybe one year, maybe 2, Jake Acedo, a local New
- 5:29Hampshire guy, came out and ran a 532.
- 5:32So Jake has the unsupported FKT on the Pemi loop.
- 5:37And yeah, so a couple recent times, so 5 thirties, 2 five 30s
- 5:42recently came, came super, super close.
- 5:47But I think we can talk about yeah, so we can talk about some
- 5:51of the goes. The Pammi loop has had a ton of
- 5:54action over the last handful of years.
- 5:55So Jack came out and ran it and then after Jack came out, you
- 6:01had I think David Hedges got really close.
- 6:03He was like a minute or two off the unsupported time.
- 6:07I think Eric Lipuma came out and ran it.
- 6:10David Sinclair just ran it. Matt Chorney just ran it.
- 6:13I don't know if Jack came and ran it again the year, the year
- 6:18after, after he got the time to try to go for Jordan's again.
- 6:21But just huge name sluggers, like elite world class runners
- 6:26have come out and and really gone for Jordan's time.
- 6:31Oh, and Jake Acito, who has the FKT, he's super fast.
- 6:35I think he ran it like maybe one or two more times after he set
- 6:38the unsupported to go for Jordan's time again and he
- 6:42missed. So it's just a super tough
- 6:46route. And I think it goes to show like
- 6:50Jordan running that time kind of like on a whim is just so
- 6:54insane. I mean, he, he, he is a crazy
- 6:59good runner, crazy good athlete. If you look at some of his times
- 7:02that he's ran on things, it's just, it's just insane.
- 7:06He had the Prezi in the Hut traverse before Jack came in and
- 7:09and got it. If you look at I think you ran
- 7:12Shakura a couple times and just, you know, won by like 7 or 8
- 7:15minutes. So Jordan feels just a stud.
- 7:19I think he moved out West. So I don't think he's local
- 7:22anymore, but I think it just goes to show like when you have
- 7:27that many elite guys come out and go for the same time and
- 7:31just time after time come up short, it just it really puts a
- 7:35ton of legitimacy and and kind of lore on on that time.
- 7:41So yeah, will the FKT ever get broken for the Pemi loop?
- 7:48I think like all records, eventually, one day it will get
- 7:52broken. But is it going to be in a year,
- 7:54five years, 10 years? Who knows?
- 7:59Yeah, who knows? Although, and we're going to
- 8:02talk about David, David Sinclair's recent effort.
- 8:05I think he he mentioned, so he ran a 537.
- 8:08I think he said he ran it counterclockwise and that like
- 8:11flume or something. He kind of, he was just bonking,
- 8:14took a minute instead of bombing down the last descent before
- 8:18finishing. And I think he said maybe he'll
- 8:21have time in the next month. He might come back and try it.
- 8:24So it could go down in a month because he did have a really,
- 8:27really good effort. I think if he didn't start
- 8:29bonking, he would have been would have been close to
- 8:31Jordan's time. But I think it's kind of the
- 8:34story of the Pemi loop. Everybody ends up bonking.
- 8:40I know when Jordan, I don't know if it's in his write up or
- 8:44podcast that he's talked about it.
- 8:46He pretty much said, you know, I don't know if he had his like
- 8:49the correct fuel that he would have if he raced it, you know,
- 8:52when he did it on a whim. But at the end of the route
- 8:54coming down Flume Hughes bonking, he gets down to the
- 8:57Lincoln Woods Trail, which is like a mile and 1/2 from the
- 9:02from the end. And he like stopped and had to
- 9:04like dip his hat in the head and everything in the river because
- 9:07he was just like bonking, overheating, you know, instead
- 9:10of running, doing that instead of running one mile to kind of
- 9:12get that time even a little bit lower.
- 9:15So, and I'm not, I'm not sure it added that much time, but I
- 9:18think it just goes to show like people go all out and at the end
- 9:23you're going to be hurting. And so I think it's just a tough
- 9:28route. So let's talk about the route
- 9:30itself. There's 2.
- 9:34So obviously it's a loop. It starts at the Lincoln Woods
- 9:37trailhead. You go over the bridge.
- 9:39I think the, the, the Strava segment or the official start
- 9:43point of the FKT is like the bridge on the parking lot side.
- 9:49So that's where you start. And it's a loop.
- 9:53So you can go clockwise or counterclockwise and you can
- 9:59pretty much choose and depending on, you know, maybe your
- 10:05strengths are what you think, I think there's reasons to go each
- 10:08direction. And so we're going to talk about
- 10:11those. So if you start out clockwise,
- 10:15we'll start with clockwise. You have about a mile and a half
- 10:18run to the Osseo Trail, and then you take the Osseo Trail up to
- 10:22Flume and then you go northbound on Franconia Ridge Trail up to
- 10:28Lafayette, northbound on the Garfield Ridge Trail.
- 10:32So you go up Garfield, you descend kind of that waterfall Y
- 10:35section on Garfield and then go over to Galehead and then you
- 10:40have that steep climb from Galehead Hut to South Twin.
- 10:45And then you kind of have smoother running over to like
- 10:50Bonds. You go over Bond Cliff and then
- 10:53and then you have kind of a smooth descent down Bond Cliff
- 10:57and then you get hit with the 6-7 miles of just Lincoln Woods
- 11:03rail bed flat easy running. And so that's clockwise.
- 11:09And I think the pros and cons. So a couple things to think
- 11:13about. Obviously you have like a six or
- 11:16seven mile stretch of really easy running on the Lincoln
- 11:20Woods Trail. So going clockwise, you do that
- 11:24last and if you go counter clockwise, you do that first.
- 11:28And so I think that's one of the big things to think about.
- 11:30Do you want to start and and tick the miles away at the
- 11:33beginning or do you want that for the end when your legs are
- 11:36kind of already dead? And then another thing is water.
- 11:40So there's not between, if you're going clockwise between a
- 11:45start in between Garfield, there is pretty much no water unless
- 11:51it's like super rainy and and little streams and stuff are
- 11:53going across the trails. There's no like super reliable
- 11:57water source. So you have to pretty much start
- 12:01off with water for a, you know, like 3 hours, which on a faster
- 12:08effort, maybe like 2 to 3 hours. And it's something to think
- 12:14about because you can, if you go clockwise, you start with more
- 12:17water and you start climbing as opposed to running the flats.
- 12:20And then at the end, you know, once you hit the Garfield
- 12:24Spring. So that would be the first water
- 12:25section. Then you have Galehead Hut where
- 12:29you get water. There's a couple water sources
- 12:31on the bonds and then the Lincoln Woods Trail, you can get
- 12:34water there. So I think like the second-half,
- 12:37if you go counterclockwise, has a lot of water.
- 12:40So it's more like preload water. And then at the end just fill up
- 12:43as needed. Going counterclockwise, like I
- 12:47said, you get the flats out of the way first while your legs
- 12:51are fresh, an easy climb up to Bond Cliff, and then you kind of
- 12:55start getting in the more tougher terrain in the
- 12:59second-half of the loop. So you had a barn Cliff, you
- 13:03head over to Bond S Twin and then you descend that steep S
- 13:07twin trail to Galehead Hut, which is going to be steeper and
- 13:11slower than kind of going uphill, at least relative paces.
- 13:18And then you go southbound on the Garfield Ridge trail.
- 13:21And then when you hit that Garfield spring, you pretty much
- 13:24have like 12 or 13 miles of no water till the end.
- 13:29So at that point, and that terrain is probably a little bit
- 13:33tougher. You don't have the Lincoln Woods
- 13:34Trail. So it's it's Garfield Ridge,
- 13:38Franconia Ridge and then descent down Ostio is is pretty quick,
- 13:43but it's steeper than the descent off Bonn Cliff.
- 13:47And so it can take a little bit and that's your last chance to
- 13:50get water. So if you take a lot of water,
- 13:52it's probably going to weigh you down a little bit more.
- 13:54If you take a little bit, you might bonk like some of these
- 13:56guys at the end of the route. So I think those are the big
- 14:00pros and cons. I guess the other pros and cons
- 14:02I think about are if you want to go up or down certain sections.
- 14:06So a few of like the notable ones that I think about from
- 14:11Lafayette to when you're when you from Lafayette to Garfield,
- 14:17I guess descending, descending Lafayette towards Garfield,
- 14:21we'll call it that is a pretty big descent slash ascent.
- 14:26It's pretty rocky, pretty technical.
- 14:28So if you are going clockwise, you have to go down that and if
- 14:31you're going counterclockwise, you go up it.
- 14:34So I don't think that it's one of those super steep like you
- 14:37can't descend really fast on it, but it is technical.
- 14:40It is a long downhill that you're going to have, and then
- 14:43if you're going counterclockwise and you go up it, you're going
- 14:48to have a big climb. You know you're going to have a
- 14:51bigger climb when your legs are tired, kind of like halfway
- 14:53through the road. So I think that's one section.
- 14:57Would you rather climb up to Lafayette when your legs are
- 15:01tired or would you rather kind of descend down a pretty long,
- 15:04steep, rocky, slower section of descent?
- 15:08I think another one on the Garfield Ridge Trail is
- 15:12descending from Garfield towards Galehead Hut.
- 15:15It's kind of like just this waterfall that pretty much you
- 15:18descend down. It's not long.
- 15:20It's maybe like a couple 100 feet.
- 15:21So it's not super long, but it is like it's usually running
- 15:27water. The rocks are wet, slippery, and
- 15:29I think climbing up that going counterclockwise is going to be
- 15:33faster than going down it clockwise in like relative
- 15:37terms. So I guess what I'm saying
- 15:39relative terms, the way that I pace efforts and I don't know if
- 15:44this is the correct way, but I think about miles invert and how
- 15:48much like of that I can do per hour.
- 15:51And if I'm climbing up something steep and rocky, my miles
- 15:55invert, you know, are pretty good because you're going slower
- 15:59when you're going uphill. So you have more time to like
- 16:02adjust to the kind of technical terrain and it doesn't slow you
- 16:05down as much. But when you're going downhill,
- 16:08you're not really gaining any vertical.
- 16:10So it's just straight. Your pace is kind of what like
- 16:13what you're making on the route. And so if it's really steep and
- 16:17really rocky, like in the Whites, you could be running
- 16:201520 minute miles on some of these crazy sections downhill,
- 16:25like running cadence. And so if you're not getting
- 16:29vert down and you're going 3 miles an hour on a really fast
- 16:32effort, like it's really not going to be kind of beneficial.
- 16:35So for me, if I have really, really technical sections, I
- 16:39always try to climb those if I can, if I think it makes sense.
- 16:42So that's another technical section.
- 16:45The next technical section would be S Twin.
- 16:47So between Galehead Hut and South Twin, if you're going
- 16:50clockwise, you go up it, so you climb it.
- 16:53And then if you're on counterclockwise, you go down
- 16:55it. That's another technical
- 16:57section. And then I wouldn't say
- 17:00technical, but thinking about the Bond Cliff descent slash
- 17:03ascent, you got to think that is a really a fast section downhill
- 17:12and it can be a fast section uphill.
- 17:13It's like pretty runnable for a while and you're just going to
- 17:17move faster on that descent. So it's something you got to
- 17:20think about. Do I want a fast descent at the
- 17:22end or do I want to an easy first climb to like kind of get
- 17:26the legs going, you know, not super steep and I can move
- 17:29pretty fast on it. So I think those are the major
- 17:32sections of the trail that I kind of think about.
- 17:34Oh, I guess another section too, that's kind of like it is really
- 17:37technical. It's shorter than some of the
- 17:39ones we just talked about, but it is technical is going from
- 17:42like going down to Bond Cliff essentially like that Ridge as
- 17:48you're going towards Bond Cliff from Bond that is super rocky,
- 17:53super technical. And if you're going clockwise,
- 17:56you go down that towards the end when your legs are obviously
- 17:58going to be more fatigued and more more tired.
- 18:02And if you're going counterclockwise, you get that
- 18:04at the beginning. And like I said, going uphill
- 18:07really technical stuff is is quicker than going downhill and
- 18:10your legs are going to be fresher.
- 18:12So I think water the flat section and then those those few
- 18:18steep sections are like things to think about how you want to
- 18:22run the Pemi loop. So what are my thoughts?
- 18:27I personally think, and I think it depends on your strengths,
- 18:31like what you're most comfortable with.
- 18:33Like for me, I feel like I'm a better hiker runner on technical
- 18:38terrain than I am just like a flat, you know, non-technical or
- 18:42like a Roadrunner. I definitely started hiking kind
- 18:46of more before I got into really trail running.
- 18:48And so I just think I'm better on rocky terrain as opposed to
- 18:53flat stuff. So for me, I really, and I don't
- 18:59even know if this is like counterintuitive, but I want to
- 19:01get the rocky technical stuff that like I'm better on.
- 19:05I want that when I'm fresher and feeling good and then at the end
- 19:10it's going to just be flat and I'm just going to go like as
- 19:12hard as I can. And, and, and whatever I have
- 19:15left in the tank, I'll kind of empty it there on the flat
- 19:17stuff. Because if I start out on the
- 19:20flat stuff, I probably not going to be running as fast as I would
- 19:25like to be. Or like it's probably going to
- 19:27feel a little bit harder even though I'm not going as fast as
- 19:30some of these other guys. And so I'd rather just have it
- 19:33like at the end of the effort just because it's kind of my
- 19:36weak spot and I'm just like, at that point you're going to be
- 19:38tired anyway. So it's not like you have to be
- 19:40super sharp. You just have to like go hard.
- 19:44So I think that's one of the reasons why I would prefer to do
- 19:48it clockwise. I think another one is water
- 19:51management. I think I would rather just load
- 19:54up water at the beginning and then not have to worry at the
- 19:57end of a bonking or anything like that.
- 20:02It's just when you have to kind of deal with some of those
- 20:04things, like sometimes it doesn't take a ton of time to
- 20:06fill bottles and stuff, but like if I were to start lighter going
- 20:11counterclockwise and like fill up a few times, I would probably
- 20:14mess something up. Like I would get, you know, more
- 20:18or less than I was planning to during the effort just because
- 20:21I'm stupid, just because when you're running hard, sometimes
- 20:24you like you don't think clearly And then not having to worry
- 20:27about bonking at the end. Because I really, I don't know
- 20:31how much water that I would take from Garfield Spring to get to
- 20:35the end. Like I would probably take a
- 20:37liter, but I would definitely run out.
- 20:39I think. So it's like, do you want to
- 20:41take a liter in 1/2 and make sure you have a lot of water or
- 20:43do you want to like risk it and hope that you're not like dying
- 20:45of thirst coming down it? And so at the beginning.
- 20:49So if you go clockwise, then it's just like, all right, I'm
- 20:53going to load up on water at the beginning.
- 20:55I'm going to drink it quick, get it off me, and then I'll kind of
- 20:58just go bottle by bottle after that because I do think
- 21:02minimizing weight on these fast efforts is, is definitely,
- 21:06definitely a good thing to do. So and then again, you know, I
- 21:11think there's technical descents, you know, each way.
- 21:17So I don't know, maybe the technical descents are a little
- 21:22bit faster if you were to go counterclockwise.
- 21:25But just for the Lincoln Woods in the water aspect, I think I
- 21:28would prefer clockwise. And so Jack Kenzel had the
- 21:34record and he did do it clockwise.
- 21:36But Jordan, Jake Acito, David Sinclair, they all went counter
- 21:42clockwise. And honestly from people that
- 21:46have done the Pemi loop both ways and done it a bunch, like
- 21:49from just what I've heard is people prefer counterclockwise.
- 21:54So I think I am probably in the minority.
- 22:00Part of me is like, I do think for for for myself, I think
- 22:03clockwise would probably be faster.
- 22:05But I may just be wrong because all these people who you know
- 22:10who Jake and Jordan who both have like the 2:00-ish, the two
- 22:14records did it counterclockwise. And it just seems like more
- 22:18people are running it counterclockwise for speed.
- 22:22So I think my declaration, I like clockwise, but
- 22:28counterclockwise is probably best, probably best.
- 22:34So that's kind of the route, the different directions.
- 22:38I do want to talk about a little bit of of the splits and stuff
- 22:42on these times. So because the one thing that I
- 22:44think about is OK, the person who has the fastest time,
- 22:48Jordan, what did he do different than everybody else?
- 22:54And I think the one thing that obviously is different is he
- 22:58wasn't planning on racing it that day.
- 23:00So like in my head is like, does that mean that everybody else
- 23:04kind of went out too hard? Does that?
- 23:06Is that just like a nerves anxiety thing where people just
- 23:09like psyched themselves out like, wow, this is going to be
- 23:11really hard and they just don't sleep as good or whatever it is?
- 23:16I think there is something to to say about like just having good
- 23:19days. Like people could just can just
- 23:21have really good days. And it's probably a day that he,
- 23:25you know, he was just having a really good day.
- 23:27But yeah, I do think about the about the pacing of it a good
- 23:33amount. Although I did look at Jordan's
- 23:36time. So we can kind of run through
- 23:39some of this stuff. But Jordan, I think he said and
- 23:45and I listen to like an interview or or something or or
- 23:48a write up and I've heard different things on it.
- 23:50And I think he just went out on a training run.
- 23:53But so I looked at a Shava file. If you could go down his splits
- 23:56on Lincoln Woods, his splits go and like each of the 1st 5
- 24:01miles, you get about like 100 feet of gain.
- 24:03So it's like very flat, but it is some gain.
- 24:06He runs a six 5637 minutes 640 on Lincolnwood.
- 24:12So those are all like low sixes, 6 gaps, which is very fast.
- 24:18So that for me, that is not a casual training run low 6 gaps
- 24:24to start it out. So I wouldn't say that Jordan
- 24:27was like pacing it super, super slow at the beginning.
- 24:30Like he was clearly running very fast.
- 24:32But I think probably just his mindset of like, oh, we're just
- 24:35out here for a run, like we're feeling good, we're moving
- 24:38probably is beneficial in some way to like running a really
- 24:41strong time. Because the the other thing I do
- 24:45think about and I don't have like all the the paces here.
- 24:49So yeah, so this is David Time. So if you look at the paces,
- 24:57David Sinclair actually ran those first 5 miles a good bit
- 25:02faster than Jordan feels. So he ran six 3628629623 634.
- 25:09So those are all, you know, 20 to 30 seconds faster than
- 25:13Jordan. So maybe maybe you know, he was
- 25:16going out a little bit harder than Jordan, but he's also
- 25:20extremely fit, like one of the fittest people in the world.
- 25:23So like and and Jordan, Jordan probably is to is to slash was
- 25:28to at that time. So those pieces just probably
- 25:31don't feel as crazy, but I'm sure like David Sinclair was
- 25:35feeling those places at the beginning, like he was going for
- 25:38a a fast effort there. So I wonder like, is it because
- 25:44Jordan kind of went out smoother at the beginning and then he was
- 25:47able to save like going hard for those steep technical sections?
- 25:52Because I think when you're on an effort in the whites, moving
- 25:57fast over those technical sections can like make or break
- 26:04your time, I guess. But like there will be days
- 26:06where you feel like, oh, I'm moving over this really smooth.
- 26:08And then there are days where you're like, oh, I'm not this.
- 26:10The technicality is just slowing me down so much.
- 26:13And so for me, like I was saying, the reason that I want
- 26:15to run it clockwise is just because I'm going to be more
- 26:21fresh for those technical sections where I think are
- 26:23probably like where you get the most time made-up.
- 26:28That could be one thing, but who knows, who knows.
- 26:32I mean it looks like they ran similar times.
- 26:35Another thing, I don't have a split up right now and I don't
- 26:37have service at the trailhead, but I believe another note, Jack
- 26:41when he ran it, so he ran a 535, I think his last 6 miles were he
- 26:46average maybe about like a 7 minute, 7 minute pace on the
- 26:51Lincoln Woods out. So he went clockwise, which so
- 26:57obviously he's doing at the end, these guys are doing at the
- 26:59beginning. But he ran kind of like a more
- 27:03conservative or not a more conservative, but he definitely
- 27:06did the, those 20 miles of the most technical stuff a little
- 27:09bit faster, I think. And I, I can't look section by
- 27:14section, like it's going to be hard to go section by section.
- 27:16So I, I could be wrong, but you know, maybe there is something
- 27:19to not going all out on that flat section and saving your
- 27:27legs for the technical. And it depends on what your
- 27:29strengths are too. Like for me, I'm sure like if
- 27:32you're a little bit better on roads or like super fast and
- 27:35you've been doing roads for a while, you may like want to get
- 27:38that section up first. And that just like won't hurt
- 27:40you as much as the other stuff. So I think there's just things
- 27:44to think about. And yeah, it's really
- 27:46interesting and really cool like that.
- 27:49That route is insane. And we'll see.
- 27:53We'll see if it ever goes down and if it's in the near future
- 27:57here. So I mean, it would be cool if
- 28:01David Sinclair gave it another go, but who knows?
- 28:06And yeah, I mean, either way, all those times, like, I mean,
- 28:10if you run under six hours on on a Pemi loop, you are flying
- 28:16anything under 7 hours to is like, is like flying that road
- 28:21is super hard, just like a super hard 50K.
- 28:26So that was kind of the Pemi loop breakdown.
- 28:28Those are my thoughts on the Pemi.
- 28:30I want to run a hard Pemi. So I've only done a full Pemi
- 28:34actually once. That was one of my first like
- 28:36long kind of ultra marathon in the, in the White Mountains.
- 28:40It was probably like 4 years ago I ran an 820, so I was just
- 28:45getting into it, but I was happy.
- 28:46I was happy with that 8:20 at the time and I did kind of want
- 28:52to get back to the Pemi loop this year.
- 28:54My season didn't go, you know, fully as planned, but I will get
- 29:01to doing a hard Pemi at some point in the future.
- 29:05Maybe it will be next year, but that was kind of the one of the
- 29:08objectives that I had to do this fall, but I did not get to it.
- 29:15But the Pemi loop will always be there and I'm going to give it a
- 29:18a hard go at some point. All right, so that was the Pemi
- 29:22loop, Pemi loop talk. I think the next thing I want to
- 29:25talk about was kind of run Mountain peaks, the podcast, the
- 29:30YouTube channel. So I can subscribe.
- 29:35No, just about like kind of like what I am thinking about it and
- 29:39like why kind of I started it. I have been kind of like off
- 29:44social media media for the most part for like a while.
- 29:48And so I think like starting news was definitely kind of like
- 29:53definitely like a new thing and like not that I've been, you
- 29:58know, back on social media, like I I don't know, YouTube is
- 30:02social media. I think like Strava social
- 30:05media. So like getting back on some of
- 30:07these things is definitely kind of getting back into the social
- 30:11media side of things. But for me, I think, you know,
- 30:15you see a lot of people, a lot of different people and they all
- 30:18kind of like, I don't know if it's a newer phenomenon or, you
- 30:22know, social media obviously has changed things like how things
- 30:24get put out there. But you know, there are so many
- 30:27people that just like put things out there or start different
- 30:31things and are just super successful at them.
- 30:33Like whether it be some sort of social media, YouTube brand,
- 30:39little business, like all of these different things.
- 30:42I feel like there's so many things that you just that people
- 30:46are just trying and like really succeeding at now.
- 30:48And for me, I really just wanted, you know, I love running
- 30:53in the mountains. I love talking about running in
- 30:56the mountains. I love training, training
- 30:59theory. Like I'm always going off to
- 31:01people who don't really run a ton or like, who probably don't
- 31:04care as much about like all these details about White
- 31:08Mountains and efforts and training and different workouts
- 31:12and all this stuff. And yeah, I've learned a lot
- 31:16over the year. Like I've spent like thousands
- 31:18of hours doing this stuff, reading, learning about this
- 31:21stuff, little bit of reading, a lot of listening to podcasts
- 31:24about it. And yeah, so I was like, you
- 31:27know what everyone else that started things has like they're
- 31:32not really different. They just have like self belief
- 31:35and just, I don't know, they just, you know, it's kind of
- 31:42just inspiring to see other people do things and put
- 31:45themselves out there. And so I was like, you know, I
- 31:48maybe I should start doing that or doing that a little bit more.
- 31:51So that's kind of why I started the YouTube channel.
- 31:54I mean, obviously I go to these mountains and see all these
- 31:57crazy things a ton. So like I saw that there was a
- 31:59little cheap lightweight camera. I was like, that shoots 4K like,
- 32:03all right, I'll see what I can kind of do.
- 32:07So started kind of posting some of those videos I did have.
- 32:10I was posting those videos in the winter and then I think I
- 32:13got really busy and I was like, I don't know if I can do this.
- 32:16Like, you know, filming the videos is kind of it's just like
- 32:21an added thing that you have to do on these runs.
- 32:24And like, I do really like enjoy, enjoy going out on a run
- 32:28like Unplugged, you know, and just enjoying being out there.
- 32:33And so I think it was kind of maybe getting in the way of that
- 32:35a little bit. But yeah, no, at the end of the
- 32:39summer, I, I, I brought it back. I did a couple things.
- 32:42And then instead of just focusing on doing like, you
- 32:46know, videos of these mountains, like talking about some of the
- 32:48training theory started doing this podcast, like talking about
- 32:53some of the races. Because like some of these races
- 32:55and FKTS don't really, you know, the people in the area know
- 33:00about them, but they don't get a ton of like coverage from like,
- 33:02you know, different people. And so, you know, I've, I've
- 33:06done a good amount of them. I tune into all this stuff.
- 33:09And so just sharing my knowledge on what I know and what I think
- 33:13about things. I figured this was like a good
- 33:15place to do that. I think I also made a website
- 33:19and I'm, I'm compiling, I'm in the process of kind of compiling
- 33:24all the FK TS in the White Mountains all the times.
- 33:27And I have some things that I want to do from that.
- 33:29Just like having like a, a central place to kind of go and,
- 33:33and find all this stuff because these are all things that I just
- 33:36feel like I couldn't find out there.
- 33:38So I'm like, you know, why not just start putting this stuff
- 33:40out there? Yes, like I said, starting the
- 33:44podcast. I think I also this winner, I
- 33:47think I'm going to take an ultra marathon, ultra running coaching
- 33:53course and and potentially start dabbling into coaching or like
- 33:58at least do more of these kind of like coaching training theory
- 34:01talks and post stuff about that. And so, yeah, it all kind of
- 34:06falls on the umbrella of like running mountain peaks.
- 34:09That is the run mountain peaks. I mean, especially in the fall.
- 34:14I love the fall. The fall is my favorite time of
- 34:16year. But just the feeling of being
- 34:18out in the mountains and feeling fit and feeling strong, running
- 34:21up mountains on a good day is just like cannot compare to
- 34:26anything else. That is just one of the best
- 34:29feel feelings. And yeah, so there's a lot into
- 34:32it. And so that's like kind of why I
- 34:34started Run Mountain Peaks. And I think this time around I'm
- 34:38definitely not going to delete the channel.
- 34:40I feel bad. There are a handful of people
- 34:42that were very supportive and all in and I feel like I let
- 34:45them down when I deleted the channel at the beginning.
- 34:48But I'm back and I hope I can make up for it now.
- 34:53And so, you know, I'm feeling better about it.
- 34:55And I think, you know, I've been trying a lot of different
- 35:00things. I've been trying to post some
- 35:01different videos on YouTube. I've been trying to do the, you
- 35:04know, the podcast I did, you know, a couple like blog stuff.
- 35:08And I think I'm getting a sense of like what I like to do more.
- 35:12Like, I don't know, YouTube is kind of crazy.
- 35:16You know, I've tried some of the, some of the, you know, not
- 35:18like click baity, but like some of the like popping titles, like
- 35:23most terrifying trail in the whites, like some of that stuff.
- 35:27And I it's, it's cool to see. It's kind of like I'm kind of
- 35:31like a numbers guy. And so it's cool to see like how
- 35:35the algorithm and like what people click on and how much
- 35:38they like on things or whatever, how how they watch different
- 35:40things. So it's kind of like cool to see
- 35:44some of that. It's also like not cool because
- 35:46sometimes you'll post a video and like everyone clicks on like
- 35:4910 seconds and it's like, alright, if you did not like
- 35:51that video. But I think, yeah, there was
- 35:55obviously going to be a learning curve and there is going to be a
- 35:57huge learning curve. But I do feel better about I'm
- 35:59just going to put out what I want to put out.
- 36:02I'm not going to do like the whole click baity.
- 36:05I don't care about all that stuff, like I'm just going to
- 36:09post like what I think about things, what I like to post and
- 36:14that's going to be it. And I think that that's like a
- 36:15better way to do it than be like, oh, this video, you know,
- 36:19you said this and got this. It's like, I don't know, some of
- 36:22those videos that I posted are probably a little bit cringy.
- 36:24I don't know, who knows, but I just want to do a good job of
- 36:28like posting things that I truly believe in.
- 36:31I just my organic real thoughts and just like cool things that I
- 36:38that I see in the mountains. So that's kind of the plan for
- 36:42the podcast, the YouTube channel, all that stuff.
- 36:45And yeah. So I just want to touch on that.
- 36:48I had had a few thoughts there and then the next thing this is
- 36:51kind of like leading into what I was just saying there deer
- 36:54hunting. So this is kind of like
- 36:58obviously kind of a a random topic, but I do think like, you
- 37:04know, obviously this is run mountain peaks, but I also think
- 37:06I'm just going to talk about whatever like I'm interested in
- 37:11and how, you know, for me every day and like most of all of my
- 37:16days are thinking about like running trails, like getting
- 37:19faster, getting fitter, training, getting up north, all
- 37:23this stuff. But there are like a handful of
- 37:25other things that that I that I like and I'm like passionate
- 37:29about and like, so I'm just going to start throwing that in.
- 37:31This is not, you know, have to do with running mountain peaks,
- 37:35you know, fully. But I'm just going to start
- 37:37throwing some of the stuff in because again, like I'm just
- 37:39going to put out really who I am and try to get over the the fact
- 37:45of like, I think I've done a better job in the last couple of
- 37:48years, maybe year or so of just being like I am who I am.
- 37:54And I shouldn't like try to be anybody that I'm not, right?
- 37:56Like I am who I am. I feel like I'm a decent person
- 37:59always trying to work on that and, you know, be a better
- 38:01person in general, but just be who you are.
- 38:04If people don't like you, they don't like you, that's just
- 38:07that's all right. You know, there's going to be
- 38:08people like that in the world and you know, it is what it is.
- 38:14So deer hunting. This is like one of my other
- 38:17hobbies and obviously it's the fall like deer season has
- 38:20started. So I figured I'm just going to
- 38:22do like I'll do like a little blurb about like what I think
- 38:27about deer hunting and like how I do it.
- 38:29So I guess going back, like when I was growing up, my dad was in
- 38:35did a lot of hunting and fishing.
- 38:36He grew up fishing a ton of him and his brothers.
- 38:39And so like growing up, I did a good amount of fishing with him
- 38:42and then when I was young, he started getting into hunting.
- 38:46And so I did a little bit of that when I was young.
- 38:48And I just, that was kind of like my first, we didn't hike a
- 38:51lot when I was younger. That was kind of like my first.
- 38:54Like how I really grew to just like, like being outside.
- 38:57Like I think growing up my whole life, I always just liked there
- 39:01was like a little trail or, or a piece of woods.
- 39:03I always just like going outside and like getting out in the
- 39:06woods and obviously like doing those things, you know, I just
- 39:10like being out there and it was cool.
- 39:13Made a lot of good memories and stuff like that.
- 39:16And then as I got into high school and college, I kind of, I
- 39:20don't know why. I mean, I don't know, I guess I
- 39:21kind of know why a little bit, but I was like pretty
- 39:23embarrassed almost, or not embarrassed, but I just didn't
- 39:27put out there that I like hunt, you know, haunted and fished to
- 39:31like pretty much anybody. You know, my close friends knew,
- 39:34but I I didn't really put it out there too, too much.
- 39:36It wasn't like it was like a secret, but I didn't, I just
- 39:38like didn't feel super comfortable.
- 39:40I mean, I grew up in Southern New Hampshire, like in a suburb.
- 39:42So it wasn't like, you know, like New Hampshire, it's very
- 39:44rural, but I just feel like there weren't a ton of people
- 39:47that I knew were like around me that did it.
- 39:49So I was kind of and maybe like a little bit closed about it,
- 39:55but I still did it. And, you know, as I got into
- 39:58college, just I had less and less time and I got to a point
- 40:01where I just didn't go too much. And sometimes I just like was
- 40:04like, I don't know if I like it. I feel like I'm, you know, it's
- 40:08and we'll talk about what, what it, what it kind of is, but, you
- 40:11know, just spending a lot of time and I didn't really, I
- 40:14wasn't really fully into it anymore and.
- 40:20So kind of got out of it, but then after college I got into,
- 40:23you know, fitness. I was doing a lot of
- 40:25weightlifting and got into fitness a lot and kind of more
- 40:29got into like eating healthy, like eating right, you know,
- 40:33diet, nutrition, stuff like that.
- 40:35And I ended up, I went to school in Maine, lived in Massachusetts
- 40:39for a while. And then I ended up moving back
- 40:41to New Hampshire. And when I moved back, I got
- 40:43back into deer hunting specifically.
- 40:47And I think that's kind of like the main, I don't do too much
- 40:49fishing. I do one fishing trip a year
- 40:51with my buddies. But deer hunting is kind of like
- 40:54the one thing that I that I still do and I really enjoy
- 40:57getting out and doing it. And it got to the point where I
- 41:01really valued. So, you know, growing up, we
- 41:04would go out hunting and then my dad pretty much we, we processed
- 41:08the whole deer, you know, in our garage.
- 41:11And so we really did like start to finish process, you know,
- 41:14haunted processed, packaged the venison and we had just like, I
- 41:21mean, it's, it's some of the best meat that you can get, like
- 41:24super lean, 100% clean, like lives in nature, right?
- 41:29Not in these big factory farms. And it got to the point where I
- 41:33started being, you know, taking some pride in like wow, like
- 41:36getting your own food and eating wild game.
- 41:39It was very I started coming around on it and I always loved
- 41:44getting outside. Like in the fall, I just feel
- 41:46like I have that itch to get out into the into the woods.
- 41:50And so like, kind of as I started trail running, getting
- 41:52into the mountains more, I think just like being outside and
- 41:57these outdoor activities just grew on me.
- 42:00And so, yeah, I got back into it more in the last handful of
- 42:03years. You know, during deer season in
- 42:06the fall, I I go out a bunch and, you know, we get a bunch of
- 42:10deer. And so like the past two years,
- 42:13I don't even buy red meat at the grocery store.
- 42:18I just eat wild game. I get one piece of salmon at the
- 42:22grocery store and then I eat like mostly venison and a lot of
- 42:24wild game like throughout the year for the, the other like 11
- 42:27months. So we, me and my dad, we ran
- 42:31out, our family ran out of venison maybe like a few weeks
- 42:34ago and then hunting, you know, maybe like a month ago and then
- 42:37hunting season started. So it turned into like taking
- 42:41pride in like getting your own clean meat.
- 42:45And it was just, you know, I like getting out in the woods.
- 42:48I like doing it. And so it kind of like started
- 42:51growing on me in different ways. And I feel like there's been a
- 42:54movement back to not back to like hunting, but more like,
- 42:59yeah, providing for yourself, doing, you know, organic,
- 43:03getting good, good quality food. And so maybe, yeah, I think I, I
- 43:09feel better about it now. And I don't definitely don't
- 43:11like Kaeda. I'm definitely not embarrassed
- 43:12about it anymore. And it's just like kind of who I
- 43:14am. I just like going out and deer
- 43:17hunting in the fall. And so yeah, so that's kind of
- 43:24like the deer hunting thing. So I'll probably mix in a little
- 43:26bit of like some hunting stories in the fall maybe.
- 43:29I actually had a little encounter with the deer recently
- 43:32last week. I might post a video tomorrow.
- 43:34I took it on my phone. I don't know if it's if it's
- 43:36good or anything, but I may be posting that.
- 43:38So keep a heads up. But yeah, that's another thing
- 43:41that I'll just touch on. I'll just talk about it as I
- 43:43want to on this podcast. And I think like a lot of
- 43:47people, like the stereotypical hunter is like drinking beer,
- 43:51shooting guns in the woods. And that is like so far from the
- 43:58opposite of me. So I definitely would not say
- 44:01I'm like a typical, you know, there are those people and you
- 44:04know, it sucks that they give like a bad name to to hunters,
- 44:07but there are a lot of people that that do it right, that love
- 44:10the outdoors, that love deer. I think a lot of people, it's
- 44:15hard to maybe it's hard to wrap your head around, but like
- 44:18hunters love wild game and probably care about them more
- 44:22than, you know, the regular person and, and you know, their
- 44:28well-being, their habitat. And so I think there's like a
- 44:32misconception for a lot of people because you see some,
- 44:34some of the bad parts of hunting that like most, most hunters are
- 44:38very passionate about wildlife, about the outdoors,
- 44:44conservation, all these things. And I think that gets
- 44:47misconstrued a little bit. You know, if you see like beer
- 44:50cans at a trailhead or something like that, you run in and I, I
- 44:54hate running into hunters like that.
- 44:57Like I feel like that's what partly ruined it when I was
- 44:59growing up. Like you would just run into
- 45:01some of these guys who just, I don't know, you know, there are
- 45:05some, definitely some characters out there and, and you know, in
- 45:09every, every hobby there are people like that, but that just
- 45:12kind of ruin it a little bit for other people.
- 45:15And so I really like the last few years, like I, you know,
- 45:18most of the hunting that I do, I spend more time hunting with a
- 45:21bow than guns. And the woods are quieter.
- 45:26It's like a much longer season for bow and I like and I get, I
- 45:32like getting out into different places and yeah, so it's it's
- 45:36really turned into something I like to do in the fall.
- 45:38I still train six days a week in the fall.
- 45:42So, you know, running is definitely still like the number
- 45:45one priority. Always want to get my runs in
- 45:47getting up into the mountains. But I do mix it in from time to
- 45:51time. And honestly, I am very much
- 45:54just want to get venison for the year.
- 45:57You know, I like getting out too.
- 45:58But once I get, you know, enough deer for the year, then I like
- 46:03waking up and go to the mountains instead of going out
- 46:05hunting. So, but they're both good.
- 46:09And yeah, so and I still prioritize running.
- 46:12I still run through it. So it's, it's a good balance.
- 46:16I think the fall is super busy for me, but it is a good
- 46:18balance. So I guess that's kind of my
- 46:21hunting spiel. Yeah.
- 46:24I'm sure some people will maybe get turned off on this by that.
- 46:29And, you know, it is what it is. I'm just going to be me.
- 46:32And, you know, if you have any questions about hunting too,
- 46:36like the other thing too, I think it's just, yeah, there's
- 46:39just maybe some misconceptions about it.
- 46:41Like, you know, obviously you have New Hampshire fishing game.
- 46:45I think hunters are the biggest contributors to New Hampshire
- 46:48fishing game and conservation just through hunting tags and
- 46:51all these things that you kind of have to go through.
- 46:53I think a lot of these people are the eyes and ears for New
- 46:57Hampshire fishing game hunters actually.
- 47:00You know, they fund conservation and conservation efforts.
- 47:03But also what people don't realize is they collect data for
- 47:07the state. And so like when you harvest
- 47:10deer, everyone who gets a deer collects data for the state.
- 47:13And they use that to pretty much help conserve populations for
- 47:18different game species. And so, you know, hunters raise
- 47:22money and they're like the biggest conservation, you know,
- 47:26up up in the North, obviously it's, it's all woods up here.
- 47:30But like down South and in, in communities, if, if you don't
- 47:34have people hunting, the deer populations get out of hand.
- 47:37More diseases, more deer incidents, more, more
- 47:41everything, more more ticks. There was a big thing recently,
- 47:45I was just talking about this with a buddy that deer are
- 47:48carrying. The more deer have been moving
- 47:51up north, they'd been carrying more ticks, but the longer tick
- 47:54season and they'd be giving more ticks to the moose.
- 47:57And so the moose population is hurting.
- 47:59And so, yeah, I mean, Fish and Game does a great job of, like,
- 48:03allocating deer tags and hunters kind of go out, gather the data
- 48:07and help manage the deer herd and the deer population to help
- 48:12all different kinds of wildlife. So yeah, very conservation heavy
- 48:18like hunters help with that. I think, you know, any time that
- 48:23I can eat a bunch of venison over factory farmed meat is is a
- 48:27huge benefit. You know, I try not to eat
- 48:31factory farms food if I if I can help it, you know, and it's
- 48:34hard. Obviously everything is getting
- 48:36super expensive, but you know, I definitely don't, you know, I
- 48:40don't blame them because it's really hard to feed billions of
- 48:43people. But also, you know, those are
- 48:45just like horrible conditions, like wild game lives their life
- 48:50in like the most awesome places, like, you know, no pesticides or
- 48:55just herbicides, you know, for what they're, you know, unless
- 48:59they're near some sort of agricultural field, but, you
- 49:03know, no hormones or any of this stuff.
- 49:05Like they're just out in nature. And so, you know, the meat is
- 49:09really good. They leave, they live an awesome
- 49:11life. You know, if anyone who eats
- 49:13meat dislikes hunting, I don't know what to tell you.
- 49:18Like, that seems crazy to me. You know, that's just letting
- 49:22somebody else do The Dirty work. So yeah, I'm not going to.
- 49:26Yeah, I'm not going to. Like I said, I'm not going to
- 49:27hide. That's like part of what I do.
- 49:29And maybe we'll talk about it on here.
- 49:31If you don't like it, all good. You don't feel free to to tune
- 49:36out. But you know, still the main
- 49:39topics are going to be running and mountain related.
- 49:43So, and I do want to, you know, as I've been up in the mountains
- 49:46more, I've never deer haunted in the mountains, but some people
- 49:50do it, which is crazy because hunting is very hard.
- 49:54You can go out a ton of times and never get anything.
- 49:57Like I think a lot of people think you go out in the woods,
- 49:59you see something, you shoot it. I've spent lots of hours and
- 50:04hours and days of my time just sitting in a tree looking at
- 50:07other trees, seeing nothing. So yeah, it's really hard.
- 50:13It's really hard to get a deer. And up here in the woods, like
- 50:16there's millions of acres, They can be anywhere.
- 50:19The population is less dense up here, but some people do it.
- 50:23And so I do want to get out in the mountains and just see,
- 50:26like, if I can even find some deer sign out here this fall.
- 50:29And so maybe I'll bring a camera along and just, you know, show
- 50:33what I find. But yeah, I think that would be
- 50:36cool. And, you know, that ties in the
- 50:37mountain stuff. But yeah, nine months out of the
- 50:40year you probably won't hear much about deer hunting and then
- 50:44the main stuff will still be will still be mountain running,
- 50:47White Mountain stuff, training, etcetera.
- 50:51All right, so that was the hunting spiel.
- 50:53Lastly, we're going to do the Bubba's second to lastly, kind
- 50:58of lastly, we're going to do the Bubba's results.
- 51:01So I talked about Bubba's The Last Man Standing event that run
- 51:04the Whites puts on. They held it last weekend and
- 51:11there was a new course record. Lucas Janulitis, hopefully I'm
- 51:19pronouncing that correctly. He won with a new course record
- 51:23of 185 1/2 miles, breaking Ed Clifford's old record of I think
- 51:29150 something. Just insane.
- 51:34Just insane. So how many laps is that?
- 51:35So each lap is 3 1/2 miles. So divided by 3.5 S 53.
- 51:41So over 53 hours, over 2 days, running 3.5 miles every hour on
- 51:47the hour. Lucas wins.
- 51:49He's from Gorham, 24 years old, and he just ran or he just won
- 51:55the last skier standing this earlier this winter.
- 51:59That run the weight puts on. So like the uphill skiing event
- 52:01that's similar to Bubba's. I think he went for like 70
- 52:04hours. So I think this ski event is a
- 52:08little bit easier. Obviously it's less impact, but
- 52:11I think it's easier to kind of go longer.
- 52:13But this dude is, he's got grit for sure.
- 52:21So he wins both of those. That's just, you know, obviously
- 52:25crazy mental, crazy physical endurance.
- 52:28This dude's got grit and he's young, so good for him.
- 52:32Congrats. And also in last man standing
- 52:34races, I think the winner is obviously always highlighted.
- 52:37But the second thing is the assist.
- 52:40So the second place person, Aaron Copeland, he run 182
- 52:44miles. Lucas doesn't run 185 1/2 if he
- 52:48doesn't have somebody going with him.
- 52:50So 2nd place is almost as an is as almost as important as first
- 52:55place. So Aaron Copland had a also a
- 52:57crazy showing. I think they have both done
- 53:00Bubba's before. So I've had some they have had
- 53:05some experience with the course and everything.
- 53:09So Congrats to those two. And then Katie Melzki, 27, from
- 53:13Cambridge, she ran 168 miles and she was the top female finisher.
- 53:19And so, yeah, you just said that is a long time, two straight
- 53:25days to be out there. Your brain starts to go, your
- 53:27body goes. But these guys battled it out.
- 53:30And I think, I think the people want to see, or at least I want
- 53:34to see, I want to see Lucas versus Ed Clifford, get Ed back
- 53:38on the course and get Lucas out there because both of these guys
- 53:42just seem like they can go forever.
- 53:43We actually may be able to glitch the Matrix or the
- 53:47simulation if Lucas and Ed do a Last man standing event with
- 53:52each other, you know, 2 humans that just will never quit.
- 53:55It may just go on forever. And we'll finally glitch the
- 53:58simulation and we'll all know. We'll all find out.
- 54:03OK. But yeah, so that was that was a
- 54:07good turn out. And then so we'll read a few
- 54:09other names here. Connor Brown, Erica Notini,
- 54:12Andrew Johnston, Michael Conley, August Myers.
- 54:18They were off tied for fourth. August was 8th.
- 54:20The rest of those guys were tied for fourth at 150 miles.
- 54:23They put down 150 miles, which is crazy efforts.
- 54:26And then I believe look here, 18/19/2020, 2020, 32026 people
- 54:34ran 100 miles. So there was a bunch of people
- 54:37tied for 18th, but 26 total people ran 100 miles.
- 54:41I don't know if they give out a belt buckle, but when you run
- 54:43100 miles that that is a tough accomplishment.
- 54:49So Congrats to all those people and anyone who showed out.
- 54:52I mean, like then you have 27 Thomas Hanlon.
- 54:54He ran 88 miles. That's also no joke.
- 54:57So Bubba's is a cool event that's kind of like the one of
- 55:02the last one of the last trail races.
- 55:06I think ultras in the in the whites for the year.
- 55:09I think there's some other ones. There's the Jackson Turkey Trot,
- 55:12the Blackout 5K10K, but as far as like ultra long distance
- 55:17trail, ultra mountain stuff as it wasn't a mountain thing.
- 55:20But that's pretty much it for the year.
- 55:22So hopefully in the next or not hopefully, but hopefully we have
- 55:26a few more weeks of good running before the trails get all icy.
- 55:30But November definitely the ice starts forming and the trail
- 55:34season comes to a close until it all snows.
- 55:38So that was the Bubba's recap and then Tecumseh.
- 55:43So we'll just talk about Tecumseh for a little bit before
- 55:45we wrap this up. So yet to yeah, last week I ran
- 55:52Tecumseh from triple I Rd. So I say gave that a good effort
- 55:57and ended up getting the the Strava crown there.
- 56:00Jimboy had a really fast time on it and was able to just sneak
- 56:04under there. So I was happy with that run and
- 56:08had a little Tecumseh reflection.
- 56:10So and I think it was 2015. I actually found the date and
- 56:14put it on my grid spreadsheet. In 2015.
- 56:18I did Tecumseh from triple I Rd. with a couple friends and I
- 56:23can't remember the caption. I remember we didn't, you know,
- 56:25one of my friend's sister was just like, hey, you guys should
- 56:29do this is an awesome hike. It's a 4000 footer, you know, go
- 56:32try this. And so we did.
- 56:34And you know, I didn't know anything about them.
- 56:37They probably didn't know anything about 4000 footers or
- 56:39hiking. We just went up there and did it
- 56:41one day. And I remembered the two things
- 56:44that I remember from that hike. One, we get up to like, I think
- 56:49it's like 36 to 3700 feet and then you have a couple 100 feet
- 56:52of drop before you get up to the Tecumseh Summit.
- 56:54And I remember when we were going down, we're all like, I,
- 56:59we saw somebody coming back and we were like, is there two
- 57:01mountains out here? Because we didn't know there
- 57:04were two mountains. And the guy was like, Oh yeah,
- 57:06just like, keep going. We clearly are like, OK, these
- 57:09guys don't know what they're doing.
- 57:10And we were just like, this is insane.
- 57:12We're going to do 2 mountains today.
- 57:15This is this is just nuts. So I do remember that being
- 57:18like, I mean, this is BS. What are we doing out here?
- 57:22And then the other thing that I remember, I think one of them
- 57:26had a caption. It was like the caption was like
- 57:29to come to buy the numbers. And I think it was like 4.
- 57:31The numbers were 4-6 and eight. I think it was, I think it was 4
- 57:38sandwiches, 6 miles, 8 hours. I'm pretty sure that that was
- 57:43the breakdown, which I'm thinking about that being like,
- 57:47is that even possible that it took us 8 hours to go up to
- 57:51come? So I mean, no, hey, everyone at
- 57:53their own pace and and yeah, everyone enjoy the mountain how
- 57:57you how you like. Any time is a good time.
- 58:01But holy smokes, if we were out there for 8 hours, that is
- 58:04insane. And then you know, the ascent
- 58:07that I had, I did it in 30. It was just under 40 minutes.
- 58:13So that was kind of like I thought that was a 10 years
- 58:15later I run Tecumseh 7 hours faster than I did the first
- 58:20time. So that was kind of like a
- 58:21little reflection that I thought was kind of funny and I thought
- 58:25I would share because that was in my mind bank.
- 58:27I remember we had a little sign that we drew a couple mountains
- 58:30on and put 4003 on it and took a picture at the summit.
- 58:33So I don't know if I had that picture make and put it in, but
- 58:36I don't know if I can find it. But that was my Tecumseh story.
- 58:40But did a good effort on Tecumseh and honestly, yeah, the
- 58:44second peak I was again, probably in the effort.
- 58:46I was like, God, this is this is yes.
- 58:47But as I'm going down that little section right before the
- 58:52final and Tecumseh, I don't know if I talked about this, but I
- 58:55had an ankle roll earlier in the season that kind of set my
- 58:58summer back and was it took longer to heal.
- 59:01I'm coming down and I haven't done any hard efforts recently.
- 59:05I'm coming down and I re roll my ankle and I'm like Oh my gosh,
- 59:09not like this. And I was able to kind of shake
- 59:12it off on the descent, get through the descent and then
- 59:14climbing. It didn't hurt.
- 59:15So it ended up being fine. But coming down my ankle really
- 59:19hurt and I was like Oh my gosh, it was just finally starting to
- 59:22feel better. I can't believe I just did that.
- 59:26I am so upset. But now a little over a week
- 59:30later, it's actually feeling better.
- 59:32I mean usually ankle rolls I can kind of get through them.
- 59:35The one this year was just like really bad and it was it was
- 59:38actually bothering me inside like it felt like my internal
- 59:42ankle ligament on like the inside of my ankle was hurting
- 59:45for a long time. And so when I re rolled it was
- 59:50just kind of the outside. It was one of those regular ones
- 59:52that hurts for a couple days, but then it it feels OK and I
- 59:55gave it some rest. I've been biking and stuff, so I
- 59:58think I got away not really getting too, too hurt on that.
- 1:00:03But I was like, Oh my gosh, I don't know if I can deal with
- 1:00:07another ankle roll in the coming months.
- 1:00:09So. But no, that was a Tecumseh
- 1:00:11story. All was good there.
- 1:00:14And yeah, I'm hoping to get a couple more, a few more good
- 1:00:19mountain runs in before the end of the year, before the season.
- 1:00:23Get all iced gets all iced in. But yeah, the the the the main
- 1:00:28goal right now is just stay healthy.
- 1:00:30Obviously this is like ankle roll season with the leaves and
- 1:00:32everything. It's you got to kind of go
- 1:00:34gingerly on the descents. But yeah, that's pretty much all
- 1:00:39I got for this week. Hopefully enjoyed it.
- 1:00:43Stay tuned for more videos this week.
- 1:00:49Yeah, Yeah, that's it. Yeah.
- 1:00:51Stay tuned for more TuneIn to to next week.
- 1:00:55We got anything in the docket for next week?
- 1:00:58And we won't give anything away yet.
- 1:01:01We'll let people wait. But yeah, we'll have another
- 1:01:03podcast next Sunday. And until then, talking about
- 1:01:08the ankle, Stay healthy, get faster.
- 1:01:11The only two things that matter almost in running.
- 1:01:15Yeah, but that's all I got. We'll see you next time, poos.
