- 0:00Luke chapter 8. Soon afterwards he began going
- 0:03around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and
- 0:06preaching the Kingdom of God. The 12 were with him and also
- 0:10some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses.
- 0:13Mary, who was called Magdalene, from whom 7 demons had gone out,
- 0:17and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod, Stewart, and Susanna, and
- 0:21many others who were contributing to their support
- 0:23out of their private means. When a large crowd was coming
- 0:27together and those from the various cities were journeying
- 0:29to him, he spoke by way of a parable.
- 0:32The sower went out to sow his seed, and as he sowed, some fell
- 0:36beside the road, and it was trampled under foot, and the
- 0:39birds of the air ate it up. Other seed fell on rocky soil,
- 0:43and as soon as it grew up it withered away because it had no
- 0:46moisture. Other seed fell among the
- 0:49thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out.
- 0:52Other seed fell into the good soil and grew up and produced a
- 0:56crop 100 times as great. As he said these things he would
- 1:00call out, He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
- 1:04His disciples began questioning him as to what this parable
- 1:07meant. And he said to you, it has been
- 1:10granted to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, but to the
- 1:13rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and
- 1:17hearing they may not understand. Now the parable is this.
- 1:20The seed is the Word of God. Those beside the road are those
- 1:24who have heard, and the devil comes and takes away the word
- 1:27from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved.
- 1:31Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear,
- 1:34receive the Word with joy, and these have no firm root.
- 1:38They believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away the
- 1:43seed which fell among the thorns.
- 1:45These are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their
- 1:47way, they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures
- 1:50of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity but the seed in the
- 1:54good soil. These are the ones who have
- 1:56heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast and
- 2:00bear fruit with perseverance. Now no one, after lighting a
- 2:04lamp, covers it over with a container or puts it under a
- 2:07bed, but he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who
- 2:10come in may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will
- 2:13not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known
- 2:16and come to light. So take care how you listen, for
- 2:20whoever has to him more shall be given, and whoever does not have
- 2:24even what he thinks he has shall be taken away from him.
- 2:28And his mother and brothers came to him, and they were unable to
- 2:31get to him because of the crowd. And it was reported to him, Your
- 2:34mother and your brothers are standing outside wishing to see
- 2:37you. But he answered and said to
- 2:39them, My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of
- 2:42God and do it. Now on one of those days Jesus
- 2:46and his disciples got into a boat, and he said to them, Let
- 2:49us go over to the other side of the lake.
- 2:51So they launched out, but as they were sailing along, he fell
- 2:55asleep, and a fierce Gale of wind descended on the lake, and
- 2:58they began to be swamped and to be in danger.
- 3:01They came to Jesus and woke him up, saying, Master, Master, we
- 3:04are perishing. And he got up and rebuked the
- 3:07wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became
- 3:10calm. And he said to them, Where is
- 3:12your faith? They were fearful and amazed,
- 3:15saying to one another, Who then is this, that he commands even
- 3:19the winds in the water, and they obey him.
- 3:22Then they sailed to the country of the garrisons, which is
- 3:25opposite Galilee. And when he came out onto the
- 3:27land, he was met by a man from the city who was possessed with
- 3:31demons and who had not put on any clothing for a long time,
- 3:34and was not living in a house but in the tombs.
- 3:37Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before him and said in a
- 3:40loud voice, What business do we have with each other?
- 3:43Jesus, Son of the Most High God, I beg you, do not torment me.
- 3:48For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man,
- 3:51for it had seized him many times, and he was bound with
- 3:53chains and shackles and kept under guard.
- 3:56And yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into
- 3:59the desert. And Jesus asked him, What is
- 4:02your name? And he said Legion, For many
- 4:05demons had entered him. They were imploring him not to
- 4:08command them to go away into the abyss.
- 4:12Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the
- 4:14mountain, and the demons implored him to permit them to
- 4:16enter the swine, and he gave them permission.
- 4:19The demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the
- 4:22herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
- 4:26When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and
- 4:29reported it in the city and out in the country.
- 4:32The people went out to see what had happened, and they came to
- 4:35Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone out
- 4:38sitting down at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right
- 4:41mind, and they became frightened.
- 4:44Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was
- 4:46demon possessed had been made well, and all the people of the
- 4:49country of the garrisons in the surrounding district asked him
- 4:52to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear.
- 4:55And he got into a boat and returned.
- 4:58But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging him
- 5:00that he might accompany him, for he sent him away, saying, Return
- 5:04to your house and describe what great things God has done for
- 5:07you. So he went away, proclaiming
- 5:10throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for
- 5:12him. And as Jesus returned, the
- 5:15people welcomed him, for they had all been waiting for him.
- 5:18And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official
- 5:21of the synagogue. And he fell at Jesus feet and
- 5:24began to implore him to come to his house, for he had an only
- 5:27daughter, about 12 years old, and she was dying.
- 5:32But as he went, the crowds were pressing against him, and a
- 5:35woman who had a hemorrhage for 12 years and could not be healed
- 5:38by anyone came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak.
- 5:42And immediately her hemorrhage stopped.
- 5:45And Jesus said, Who is the one who touched me?
- 5:47And while they were all denying it, Peter said, Master, the
- 5:51people are crowding and pressing in on you.
- 5:53But Jesus said, someone did touch me, for I was aware that
- 5:56power had gone out of me. When the woman saw that she had
- 6:00not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before
- 6:02him, and declared in the presence of all the people the
- 6:05reason why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately
- 6:08healed. And he said to her, daughter,
- 6:11Your faith has made you well, Go in peace.
- 6:14While he was still speaking, someone came from the House of
- 6:16the synagogue official saying, Your daughter has died, do not
- 6:20trouble the teacher any more. But when Jesus heard this, he
- 6:23answered him, Do not be afraid any longer, only believe, and
- 6:27she will be made well. When he came to the house he did
- 6:30not allow anyone to enter with him except Peter and John and
- 6:33James and the girl's father and mother.
- 6:37Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her, but he said,
- 6:40Stop weeping, for she has not died, but is asleep.
- 6:44And they began laughing at him, knowing that she had died.
- 6:47He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, Child
- 6:51arise. And her spirit returned, and she
- 6:54got up immediately. And he gave orders for something
- 6:56to be given her to eat. Her parents were amazed, but he
- 7:00instructed them to tell no one what had happened.
