- 0:26Hello Travelers and Monster Catchers abound.
- 0:28I'm Stella Ferris and you've crash landed on
- 0:30the Monster Catchers Journal podcast. Today's
- 0:32episode delves into the recent catch I caught
- 0:35called Numera. Allow me to offer some background
- 0:38of Numera. A long time ago when a school full
- 0:42of children were playing, they came across this
- 0:44rare artifact that was said to bring things to
- 0:47life with love. They used it to bring a bunch
- 0:51of clouds to life. Some say it was their laughter
- 0:54that brought them to life. The clouds were overprotective
- 0:57over the children. So when they got mad, they
- 1:01would rain broken gadgets, spoiled food, unlucky
- 1:04objects like black feathers or broken mirrors.
- 1:07There were also a mix of smaller enemies. The
- 1:11Wan Academy had seen this as a bad omen. So they
- 1:17ran the clouds up the mountain. And that's where
- 1:20they have been ever since that day. So now, let's
- 1:25get into the story. It was a warm summer day,
- 1:28the twin suns and three moons set in their normal
- 1:31spot above the academy. I was about to venture
- 1:34into the forbidden section of the academy. To
- 1:37tell the truth, this wasn't the first time either.
- 1:40I just had to steer clear of Professor Orion.
- 1:42He would never allow it. Or never let me live
- 1:45it down. But who's counting? I was standing outside
- 1:49the door. It was silver with a large biohazard
- 1:53symbol. Symbol. At the top said in red letters,
- 1:57authorized personnel only. I was about to enter
- 2:00when someone cleared their throat. I spun around
- 2:02coming face to face with Professor Orion. Professor
- 2:06Orion said, and where do you think you're going?
- 2:11And I replied, no, nowhere, Professor. I was
- 2:13just wondering where this door leads. I mean,
- 2:16there's a biohazard symbol. But no one is allowed
- 2:20to enter? Never you mind what's behind the door.
- 2:24Now get to class !" Professor Orion shouted.
- 2:28I pretended like I was going to class, but I
- 2:31snuck into the door, unaware that Luna and Xena
- 2:34had followed me. Outside, it was just a pathway
- 2:38that led up the mountain, made of stone and dirt,
- 2:45and it led all the way up until I came to a large
- 2:49pink crater at the peak of the mountain. Inside
- 2:52was a thousand... clouds. Some red, some green,
- 2:57some turquoise, but what I was looking for was
- 3:03a fluffy blue one with a towel. I continued to
- 3:07look when I saw it. It's the only one of its
- 3:10kind and the first to be made. I opened my bag
- 3:14and pulled out my vapor glyphid. It's the only
- 3:17way to catch a vapor -styled glyph. I placed
- 3:21a glyphid and set it. The cloud got angry and
- 3:24scared. It turned dark and rained rotten food
- 3:27that landed on a bush. Xena and Luna were hidden
- 3:31in. Eww! Xena shouted. My hair is ruined! Luna
- 3:37cried. I thought I told you two to go to class.
- 3:41We wanted to help. Xena said to me. Besides,
- 3:45no one can know you're catching this glyph or
- 3:48you will get in trouble. They will confiscate
- 3:51it because of how dangerous it is Luna said Fine,
- 3:58but you know what happens if we get caught I
- 4:00said as I threw my hands up and defeat I Watched
- 4:04as the cloud tried to fight the glyphids power,
- 4:07but it lost and pulled and was pulled into the
- 4:10glyphid I picked up the glyphid and put it in
- 4:12my bag Me Luna and Zeno were about to leave when
- 4:15all the clouds around us started to turn dark
- 4:18gray My stomach lurched as I realized that this
- 4:21time Professor Orion was right. I should have
- 4:24listened, but as always, I never do. That's what
- 4:30I get. I should have left well enough alone,
- 4:38but as always, I had to have this glyph. The
- 4:42cloud started to barrel towards us. We came up
- 4:45on the door. It swung open and slammed shut right
- 4:48behind us. Standing there was an angry looking
- 4:51Professor Orion. His eyes knitted in confusion
- 4:55and anger. Stella, Ferris, Xena, Luna, what are
- 5:00you doing here? I sent you to class. Professor
- 5:05Orion sad as his features changed to appear fear.
- 5:11Did you catch a new or did you catch one? Anumara?
- 5:16No, I lied. We were attacked before we could...
- 5:20You were right. This time, Professor Orion. Good.
- 5:26School's over. Go home, Professor Orion replied
- 5:29to me in a stern tone. So I was thinking I should
- 5:33move in with you. I mean, I could live in the
- 5:36basement since you only have two rooms upstairs
- 5:39and you and Zena are already staying in them.
- 5:43Luna said excitedly as we walked away. That would
- 5:47be amazing. I'd love the idea. Move in with us,
- 5:50I said. Yes, move in. Then we can have a sleepover
- 5:54every night, Xena said as she wrapped her arms
- 5:57around me and Luna. So back at the sanctuary.
- 6:02Now it was time to acclimate Numera into the
- 6:07fray of glyphs in my sanctuary. I placed the
- 6:10glyph and pressed the button. The glyph slowly
- 6:13opened up, and from the glyphid came Numera.
- 6:16He looked left, then right. He floated over to
- 6:19a spot where the moons of Nivru, all three, were
- 6:23shining through the window. He swirled in circles
- 6:29like a dog trying to get comfortable, and he
- 6:31laid down and went to sleep. Well, it's safe
- 6:35to say he loves the sanctuary, I said. So much
- 6:39so that he went to sleep. Luna said as she chuckled.
- 6:47I spent the next few hours watching Numera. He
- 6:51slept, flew around, and played with the other
- 6:54glyphs. His favorite was Orabi. All of a sudden
- 6:57there was a knock at the door. My heart sank
- 6:59because I knew exactly who waited on the other
- 7:01side. I fear that he had already figured out
- 7:05that I lied to him earlier, and that he was coming
- 7:08to take my Numera away. You have to hide, my
- 7:13friend," I whispered to Numera. Numera hid, and
- 7:16I walked over and answered the door. As expected,
- 7:19it was, indeed, Professor Orion. He wore a solemn
- 7:25look on his features. His hands were tucked behind
- 7:29his back, as if he were in thought. May I come
- 7:34in? Professor Orion asked stoically. Of course,
- 7:38I replied, nervously. Professor Oren stood at
- 7:43the door, hands tucked behind his back. Still.
- 7:48For a minute before he entered. He walked in
- 7:53slowly, eyes drifting across the sanctuary. The
- 7:57glyphs sensed his presence, some retreated into
- 7:59their resting spots. Others stood curiously still.
- 8:03I kept my back straight, hiding the anxiety twisting
- 8:06in my chest. Behind me, Luna and Xena stood silently.
- 8:10exchanging glances. Professor Orion, without
- 8:14looking at me, said, Tell me, Stella Ferris.
- 8:18Did you truly think I wouldn't know? My breath
- 8:21caught. I didn't answer. He walked toward the
- 8:24sun -drenched window, where, just moments ago,
- 8:27a numera had curled up. Faint traces of vapor
- 8:30still shimmered in the air, you know, slightly
- 8:34touching the ground with his fingers. His voice
- 8:38became a little softer, with the next line he
- 8:41said. It's here. I can feel the resonance. He's
- 8:46here. Numera, as if sensing his name unspoken,
- 8:51slowly floated out from behind the pillar where
- 8:53he had hidden, his fluffy form pulsed with a
- 8:57pale blue glow, the tip of his tail trailing
- 9:00glittering mist. He made no sound, no expression,
- 9:03just drifted silently beside Aura Beak. who ruffled
- 9:07his wings protectively. Professor Orion stood
- 9:12up. You caught Numera, and you brought him home.
- 9:16I did, I replied. He's not hurting anyone, Luna
- 9:20said. He just wanted a place to rest, Sena said,
- 9:24stepping forward. Orion looked at the three of
- 9:26us, his sternness faltering, a crack in his armor.
- 9:32You don't understand the pressure this puts on
- 9:34all of us. Numera is connected to something much
- 9:37older. The cloud you saw at the crater. Those
- 9:41were guardians. When you pulled him from their
- 9:44circle, you broke an emotional tether. It will
- 9:48stir unrest. They're already moving. He's safe
- 9:51here. He doesn't want to go back. Numera floated
- 9:55gently to the center of the room, circling once
- 9:59beneath the beams of moonlight, spilling in through
- 10:02the arched windows. Then, like a feather, he
- 10:05lowered himself and curled up again, peaceful,
- 10:08content. Professor Oren watched closely. He's
- 10:13dormant. That's good. He likes it here. It's
- 10:17not just a glyph. He feels things. He plays.
- 10:20He naps. He has a favorite spot by the window.
- 10:25Orabic shares his food stash with him. That's
- 10:27rare, as Enna said. After Luna. Professor Orion
- 10:33exiled and turned towards me. I'm not taking
- 10:36him away, Professor Orion said. You're not? I
- 10:40blinked. No, but this isn't over. I need to prepare
- 10:45the sanctuary. There's a storm, or no wait, sorry,
- 10:49I need you to prepare the sanctuary. There's
- 10:51a storm coming. The clouds will search for him
- 10:55and they will not stop. You must protect him
- 10:58and yourself. He made his way to the door, pausing
- 11:03before he left. And Stella Ferris, next time
- 11:07you break into a forbidden zone, at least wipe
- 11:10your footprints. You'll let Luna and Xena into
- 11:12danger. Note it, I replied. He disappeared into
- 11:18the evening, the door clicking shut behind him.
- 11:21Sunlight. The next day when I woke up, I was...
- 11:26Greeted by the sunlight streaming through the
- 11:29high windows of the sanctuary, and it was filtered
- 11:32by the dome skylight. Birds were chirping from
- 11:35the tree -chopped glyph towers, and the peaceful
- 11:38hum of sleeping creatures gave the morning a
- 11:40dreamy calm. I stepped into the main chamber,
- 11:43stretching with a yawn, still writing the glow
- 11:46of last night's peace. But something felt off.
- 11:49Numura hadn't moved. He floated in the exact
- 11:52same spot right under the moon window, where
- 11:55we left him. His glow was dimmer than before,
- 11:59and his tail swayed slowly, listlessly, like
- 12:02a drifting thread. He hasn't eaten or even tried
- 12:08to stare his food stash again, Luna said. He
- 12:11looks sad, Luna said, frowning. I approached
- 12:15carefully, gnawing beside the mist curling around
- 12:18his base. His eyes opened. Just barely. No sparkle.
- 12:24No mischief. Just distance. You miss them, don't
- 12:28you? I ask softly. Nomura floated a bit higher,
- 12:33hovering toward the window where the three moons
- 12:35and the sun hung low in the sky. We could take
- 12:41him back just for a visit. Maybe he needs closure.
- 12:45I said, or as Inna said, we can stay nearby.
- 12:49If things look bad, we'll pull him back into
- 12:52the glyphid," Luna said. I hesitated, glancing
- 12:56toward the glyph terminal. Where the vapor glyphid
- 12:59rested, this felt risky. But then Numera turned
- 13:04slightly and brushed his tail against my hand.
- 13:06It wasn't a nudge. It was a nudge goodbye. The
- 13:15wind was still as we arrived at the crater. It
- 13:18was quiet, no movement, no clouds. Numura floated
- 13:21from my sight toward the crater of the pink stained
- 13:25basin. He stopped and waited. Maybe they're watching?
- 13:31Luna said, hopeful. Maybe this is going to work,
- 13:36Sena said. For a moment, it looked like it would.
- 13:39A soft breeze stirred the edges of the crater.
- 13:42Bits of glowing dust rose into the air. Then
- 13:45the sky darkened, fast. That's not normal cloud
- 13:50movement, Luna said. Something's wrong, Zena
- 13:54said, drawing out her glyphid. The cloud surged
- 13:58over the crater ridge, angry and swirling violently,
- 14:02not graceful like Nomura. Chaotic. The colors
- 14:06flickered unnaturally, pulsing with heat and
- 14:09static. They didn't greet him, they rejected
- 14:12him, and they attacked. Black rain fell, not
- 14:15water. But corrupted enemy cliff fragments shattered
- 14:20drones twisted scrape beast Sorry scrap beast
- 14:26Spined metal birds they dropped like bombs materializing
- 14:30midair hissing and screeching deploy deploying
- 14:35brass shade Ignis or I got into a position or
- 14:44a beat go I shout it. Verdelem Intercept, which
- 14:52was a move that Luna's Myrno had. We launched
- 15:01our glyphs as the battle lit up. Metal and mist
- 15:04clashed, vines ripping through enemy bots, feathers
- 15:08slicing through air. Brass shade shielded Luna.
- 15:14just as a bird -like enemy dive -bombed her.
- 15:20It was a move that was meant to protect. Myrno
- 15:26still shaded her with the brass shade shield.
- 15:31They're aiming for us, not him. I glanced at
- 15:35Nomura. He was in the center, frozen, surrounded
- 15:38by attacking enemies, ignored. His tail flickered,
- 15:42a tear. of vapor streaming down his side. They
- 15:48blame us. They think we stole him, I said. Suddenly
- 15:53an enormous jagged vapor cloud dove at me, only
- 15:57for Orabique to crash into it midair, taking
- 16:00the blow. We can't keep this up, there's too
- 16:02many. Retreat, regroup now, I said. Just as we
- 16:07begin to fall back, a massive pulse of light
- 16:10slams into the crater. The clouds retreat, instantly
- 16:13vanishing like smoke on the wind. The enemies
- 16:16collapse into sparks and vanish. Professor Orion
- 16:20stands on the ridge, eyes glowing faintly, his
- 16:23cloak billowing. He looks like a storm given
- 16:26form. Professor Orion says, booming, what have
- 16:31you done? We stand in silence, bruised, bleeding,
- 16:35holding our half -fried glyphs. I warned you.
- 16:42I told you to keep him safe, not parade him into
- 16:45the storm. Do you have any idea what you've awakened?"
- 16:49Professor Orion shouted. He was sad. He thought,
- 16:55if he saw them, if they saw him, I said, my voice
- 16:59shaking. They don't see him as one of them anymore.
- 17:03You broke the bond when you took him. And now
- 17:06they see you as a thief. Professor Orion shouted.
- 17:15After our big fight with Professor Orion, we
- 17:18headed home. We just didn't want to hear any
- 17:22more about how we did wrong. So, numeralized
- 17:32curled up near the skylight again, silent, dim,
- 17:35smaller than before. We sit in silence, Xena
- 17:39wraps her wounds, Luna stares at the floor. We
- 17:43thought we were helping. I said. Instead we nearly
- 17:47died. The clouds didn't want Numura back. They
- 17:50wanted revenge. Now the storm has truly begun.
- 17:56Yeah. Both Luna and Xena say. The following days
- 18:04the sanctuary had never felt so quiet. Even the
- 18:07usual nighttime hum of chirping glyphs and glowing
- 18:10moth flutters had faded. Outside, the wind had
- 18:16stopped. Inside, the air was thick like the building
- 18:19itself was holding its breath. Numura hadn't
- 18:24moved since we got back. He was curled beneath
- 18:27the skylight, tail limp, his glow barely more
- 18:30than a flicker. His breathing, if you could call
- 18:34it that, was shallow and pulsed, in uneven rhythms.
- 18:39I think he's heartbroken, Luna whispered. They
- 18:43turned on him. It was like they didn't even recognize
- 18:46him, Xena said. I sat on the floor, staring at
- 18:51my hands, still faintly shaking from the battle.
- 18:54My glists rested and their pods drained. Ignazura
- 19:00and Myrno had burns. Orbeak's wings was scuffed.
- 19:09None of us had escaped untouched. The crazy part
- 19:16is I had thought we were doing the right thing
- 19:18by giving him clothes, but bringing him home
- 19:24wasn't the right thing because the clouds didn't
- 19:27want to welcome him. They wanted him back in
- 19:29pieces. Suddenly the door creaked open. Professor
- 19:34Orion stepped into the room, his boots echoing
- 19:37softly. His expression hadn't changed since the
- 19:40crater hard. Disappointed, unreadable. We stood
- 19:47up instinctively, racing for another round of
- 19:50fury, but instead, he looked at Numera. He knelt
- 19:53beside the small blue form and ran his fingers
- 19:56through the mist trailing off its tail. Professor
- 20:00Orion looked at us and said softly, he's fading.
- 20:05Zeno started to panic as she said, can't we heal
- 20:07him? Luna chimed in, there has to be a way. We
- 20:12didn't ask for this. Orion sighed deeply, placing
- 20:15a small cube on the floor. It pulsed once faint,
- 20:20blue light, scanning numerous shape. He's not
- 20:25dying, not yet, but he's retreating. Vapor glyphs
- 20:29are highly emotional, especially ones born of
- 20:31laughter and love, if their emotional bonds are
- 20:34severed too violently. Orion said, they collapse
- 20:40from the inside. You nod it grimly at me. You
- 20:47need stability, new bonds, new identity, one
- 20:51separate from the others, Professor Orion said.
- 20:55Can we help him do that? Then I ask or in looked
- 20:59at us really looked for a moment something softened
- 21:03behind his eyes You three may may be the only
- 21:07ones who can But understand the clouds will come
- 21:10again not for him for you for your interference
- 21:15and next time They will fight Luna said or Luna
- 21:20said firmly Or then will fight Luna said firmly
- 21:26No, this time we'll prepare, Xena said. We began
- 21:33building that very day. Lift defenses, reinforce
- 21:38shields, cloaking fields. I even worked on modifying
- 21:41Numera's glyphid to stabilize his energy through
- 21:45emotional sinking and channeling sharp memories.
- 21:50Laughter, calm. Numera didn't move, but sometimes
- 21:54his tail curled. toward the sounds of our voices,
- 21:59or his glow pulsed faintly when Ourobeak dropped
- 22:02pebbles by his side. He was listening, he wasn't
- 22:06gone yet. We'd faced storms before, rogue glyphs,
- 22:10shadow beasts, even spectral contagions from
- 22:14the hollow depths. This was different. This was
- 22:18personal. Numera wasn't ours, or Numera was ours
- 22:22now, and we were going to fight like it. We thought
- 22:27the catch was the end of the story, that bringing
- 22:30him home was the hardest part, but it wasn't.
- 22:33The hardest part was proving to a broken creature
- 22:35that they still deserve love. So we build, we
- 22:39guard, we prepare, because the storm is coming
- 22:43back, and next time it won't be just rain. Numura
- 22:48floated happily through the upper rafters of
- 22:50the sanctuary now, trailing soft ribbons of glowing
- 22:54mist. He moved differently, lighter, freer. He'd
- 22:59even become mimic in Myrnau's grounded spin and
- 23:02power hops. Though he often paused to stare out
- 23:07the window at the sky beyond the forest, the
- 23:10ritual had worked. He was brighter, stronger,
- 23:13but that didn't mean he wasn't still wondering
- 23:15what might have been. Luna was seated cross -legged
- 23:20on the floor of her room, a soft hum of ambient
- 23:24music. Playing from a crystal embedded in the
- 23:27wall, Ignizura, her gleaming sapphire and ruby
- 23:31striped tiger glyph, lay curled near the bookshelf
- 23:34soaking in the heat of an enchanted lamp. Luna
- 23:43scribbled in her filled journal, her brow furrowed.
- 23:48Numera's glow has increased by 14%. Emotional
- 23:51resonance stabilized. Still dreams often muttered
- 23:55and missed. We'll continue observation. She paused,
- 23:59tapping her pen to her chin, then looked toward
- 24:02Ignizura, who raised his head and let out a faint
- 24:05time -like growl. You feel it too, huh? He's
- 24:11not done healing. Ignizura stood stretching his
- 24:14crystalline limbs with a crackle of energy and
- 24:17patted over to rest beside her. with a huff that
- 24:21sent a soft breeze through the pages of her journal.
- 24:25Zena lay across her bed with one leg hanging
- 24:28off the side, her boots still on, and half her
- 24:32tool kit scattered on the floor. Myrna, her rhino
- 24:37meerkat hybrid glyph sat perched in the corner
- 24:40beside a wall of magnet sensors, monitors, his
- 24:47thick shoulders hunched forward in alert curiosity.
- 24:50She clicked through her handheld receiver adjusting
- 24:53frequency dials. I knew those clouds weren't
- 24:56done. Fiorna snored it and scraped his horn like
- 25:00his horn like brow against the side of the glyph
- 25:06scanner. Static buzz then faint glyph pulses.
- 25:11Zinnia set up fast. Here we go. The three of
- 25:16us gathered around the glowing glyph terminal
- 25:18as data streamed across the screen. Xena had
- 25:22her goggles over her eyes now, scanning frequency
- 25:24overlays. Multiple vapor type readings, high
- 25:28contraption or concentration sorry. Movement
- 25:34patterns suggest a formation circling something.
- 25:40Xena said, they're not headed for us. Luna said,
- 25:45arms folded, eyes narrow. No, but they're doing
- 25:49something, something deliberate, Zena said. Where?
- 25:53I asked. The Hal Spire Mountains, Zena said,
- 25:58tapping the screen. The name made my stomach
- 26:00knot. That whole range had been dormant for years,
- 26:04sealed off by the Academy due to unstable ley
- 26:07line activity. They're either building something
- 26:12or waking something. I said, thinking out loud.
- 26:17Outside we could see Numera float toward the
- 26:20tall glass window. He hovered there in eerie
- 26:23silence, gazing towards the jagged silhouette
- 26:26of the distant mountains. Later that night, in
- 26:31my room, the moon cast cold silver shadows on
- 26:34the floor. I said in the dark, my recorder glowing
- 26:38faintly in my hand. Quietly for Myself, I said,
- 26:46Today was a win, but it's not the end. The clouds
- 26:49are still moving, gathering. It's something deep
- 26:52in me. No, it's they're not just coming for revenge.
- 26:56They're building towards something bigger, something
- 26:58ancient. Numera isn't the first ripple, and we're
- 27:01standing at the edge of a very deep ocean. And
- 27:05with that, that's the end of our story. This
- 27:08is Stella Ferris, signing off. May the many gods
- 27:12of Nibiru shine their ever true light on you.
- 27:15Until next week. And maybe next week I'll talk
- 27:19about the many glyphids that we use to catch
- 27:23our glyphs. And with that being said, thank you
- 27:27for listening and I'll see you next week.
