Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome.
- 0:01Speaker 2: It is Verdicus Center, Ted Cruz, Ben Ferguson with you.
- 0:05Speaker 2: It's so nice to have you listening today on this
- 0:08Speaker 2: fourth of July weekend. And we're gonna have a little
- 0:12Speaker 2: fun with today's show because it is look for the
- 0:16Speaker 2: July a lot of families hanging out having fun watching movies.
- 0:20Speaker 2: And there was a list that came out and it
- 0:23Speaker 2: irritated Center Ted Cruz the point where we're now doing
- 0:27Speaker 2: a show over it, which makes me laugh.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I love this.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We're gonna you're gonna get see the real Center Ted
- 0:32Speaker 2: Cruse in this show, which makes me very happy. This
- 0:35Speaker 2: list came out, you were a little cranky about it,
- 0:37Speaker 2: and I love it.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Well, let me say to everyone, I hope you're having
- 0:40Speaker 3: a fantastic Fourth of July weekend. I hope you're celebrating
- 0:43Speaker 3: America's birthday. I hope you're you're grilling hot dogs and
- 0:48Speaker 3: burgers in the backyard and playing with your kids. By
- 0:52Speaker 3: the way, if you are grilling burgers, I hope you're
- 0:53Speaker 3: doing a better job of it than Chuck Schumer does.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Do not put the cheese on the burger while the
- 0:58Speaker 3: burger is still raw. That that that's a rookie mistake.
- 1:03Speaker 3: But if you're anything like me, holiday weekends, what I
- 1:07Speaker 3: love to do is go to the movies. When I
- 1:09Speaker 3: was a kid, I went to the movies with my
- 1:11Speaker 3: mom my dad all the time. And I love movies.
- 1:14Speaker 3: And it happened this past week that the New York
- 1:17Speaker 3: Times put out this list of the top thirty best
- 1:21Speaker 3: films of the twenty first century, according to over five
- 1:24Speaker 3: hundred actors, directors, and other names in Hollywood. And I
- 1:28Speaker 3: got to say, this is the worst list I have
- 1:31Speaker 3: ever seen. This is a list of a bunch of politicized,
- 1:35Speaker 3: woke feet, out of touch Hollywood types, and no wonder
- 1:40Speaker 3: the movie business is in trouble because most of these
- 1:43Speaker 3: movies nobody's seen, and the movies that people go to
- 1:47Speaker 3: don't make the list. So I'm just going to read
- 1:48Speaker 3: you their top thirty, starting with number thirty. Lost in Translation, Arrival,
- 1:55Speaker 3: The Dark Night Adaptation, Anatomy of a Fall, Phantom Thread,
- 2:00Speaker 3: Her Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums, Wolf
- 2:05Speaker 3: of Wall Street, Zodiac, Ethu, Mama, ta'm Ying, Broke Back Mountain,
- 2:12Speaker 3: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, City of God, Inglorious, Bastards, Children
- 2:17Speaker 3: of Men, The Zone of Interest, mad Max, Fury Road,
- 2:21Speaker 3: The Social Network, Spirited Away, Get Out, Eternal Sunshine of
- 2:26Speaker 3: the Spotless Mind, No Country for Old Men, Moonlight in
- 2:31Speaker 3: the Mood for Love, There Will Be Blood, Mulholland Drive.
- 2:36Speaker 3: And the number one movie of the last twenty five
- 2:38Speaker 3: years according to the New York Times, is Parasite. Now,
- 2:42Speaker 3: I gotta say there's some good movies on that list.
- 2:44Speaker 3: They're not all dogs, but number one i'd be willing
- 2:49Speaker 3: to bet of that list. Have you seen more than
- 2:51Speaker 3: five of those movies?
- 2:52Speaker 1: Ben Ah, I have seen maybe five.
- 2:56Speaker 2: There's a couple like Inglorious Bastards that I've watched that
- 2:59Speaker 2: was pretty good.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I don't throw that one in there.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But overall I would have to google the majority of
- 3:03Speaker 2: the list you just read right, Like the majority, I'd
- 3:06Speaker 2: have to google.
- 3:06Speaker 1: Make what is this? They were not on my top
- 3:08Speaker 1: list at all.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Well, it is a pretentious list, and it's a list
- 3:13Speaker 3: with an agenda, and I actually liked so. Twitter was
- 3:16Speaker 3: going back and forth about it. And there's this fellow
- 3:19Speaker 3: named Mike Henry who asked chat gpt to analyze that
- 3:23Speaker 3: list of film look for similarities and rank the films
- 3:26Speaker 3: by how woke they are, and it came up with
- 3:30Speaker 3: tier one. These are straight up ideological vehicles. Message is
- 3:34Speaker 3: greater than story and according to chat GPT, number five
- 3:38Speaker 3: Moonlight is about black queer identity, poverty, masculinity, deconstruction, Get Out,
- 3:44Speaker 3: number eight is about white liberal racism, body autonomy and
- 3:47Speaker 3: performative allyship. Number one Parasite is about anti capitalism, class warfare,
- 3:53Speaker 3: rich equals evil symbolism. Number twelve the zone of interest
- 3:57Speaker 3: Holocaust reimagined via ambient horror or villainy through banality. Number
- 4:02Speaker 3: seventeen Broke Back abount and least surprising movie on the
- 4:06Speaker 3: list if all was putting it together, and that is
- 4:09Speaker 3: according to chat GPT, about queer repression, masculinity and rural stigma.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Number eighteen itavamataming, sexual liberation, political awakening, class divide, and
- 4:19Speaker 3: number thirteen Children of Men, anti fascist immigration, dystopian surveillance society.
- 4:27Speaker 3: That's what they went with. Politics instead of good movies,
- 4:32Speaker 3: instead of movies people like, instead of movies that inspire you,
- 4:36Speaker 3: instead of movies that make you laugh, instead of movies
- 4:39Speaker 3: that make you hug your kids. And so I decided
- 4:43Speaker 3: to come up with my own list, I will say.
- 4:45Speaker 3: A number of reporters called and said, all right, all right,
- 4:48Speaker 3: you don't like this one, what's your alternative? And listen,
- 4:51Speaker 3: We're going to put out a list of thirty. And
- 4:54Speaker 3: I'm not going to claim it is the definitive list
- 4:56Speaker 3: of the thirty greatest films of the last twenty five years,
- 4:59Speaker 3: but the aready excellent movies that came out in the
- 5:02Speaker 3: last twenty five years. And I tried to think about
- 5:05Speaker 3: how to do it, because you know, I do actually
- 5:08Speaker 3: have a day drik job and I'm not a film critic.
- 5:11Speaker 3: So what I did is I went and printed out
- 5:12Speaker 3: a list of all of the nominees for the Academy
- 5:15Speaker 3: Awards for Best Picture each of the last twenty five years.
- 5:17Speaker 3: I figured, okay, that's a good place to start, and
- 5:21Speaker 3: starting in two thousand and one for the two thousand movies,
- 5:23Speaker 3: the winner of Best Picture in two thousand and one,
- 5:25Speaker 3: any idea, ben no clue. Gladiator one of the best
- 5:30Speaker 3: movies ever made. It is in my top ten all time,
- 5:34Speaker 3: if not top five. And these idiots didn't put Gladiator
- 5:37Speaker 3: on the list.
- 5:39Speaker 2: That doesn't surprise me, though, Like I feel like, if
- 5:41Speaker 2: it's a movie that just makes you smile or makes
- 5:43Speaker 2: you excited or happy. You're like, no, no, no, can't have
- 5:46Speaker 2: that movie on the list, right, like, because that would
- 5:48Speaker 2: just be too normal, insane.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Gladiator was an extraordinary, fantastic movie. I can't watch it
- 5:54Speaker 3: at enough times. It's perfectly done. You know what also
- 5:57Speaker 3: came out in two thousand. It didn't get nominated to
- 5:58Speaker 3: the Academy Awards, but it came out the same year,
- 6:01Speaker 3: you know what movie The Patriot, which is another fantastic,
- 6:05Speaker 3: amazing movie. It is an amazing movie. It also makes
- 6:09Speaker 3: my top ten. It's not on their list, both of them.
- 6:12Speaker 3: So two thousand was a good year for movies. You
- 6:14Speaker 3: had both The Patriot and Gladiator come out that year. Fantastic, uplifting,
- 6:20Speaker 3: nowhere on their list. How about two thousand and one?
- 6:24Speaker 3: Two thousand and one, just from the list of Academy
- 6:26Speaker 3: Award nominees, the winner was A Beautiful Mind, which is
- 6:29Speaker 3: a great, powerful, touching movie. Doesn't make their list. Also
- 6:36Speaker 3: that year in the Academy Award, didn't win it, but
- 6:39Speaker 3: came out that year was Bulan Rouge, which was a musical.
- 6:42Speaker 3: It was fun, it was interesting.
- 6:45Speaker 1: I laughed.
- 6:47Speaker 3: It's a good movie. All right, doesn't make their list.
- 6:50Speaker 3: How about two thousand and two, two thousand and two,
- 6:54Speaker 3: there are two of the movies that the winner for
- 6:57Speaker 3: Best Picture was Chicago. Chicago is a great musical. You've
- 7:02Speaker 3: got Rick Richard Gear. I still like when he when
- 7:06Speaker 3: he is trying to get out of trouble and goes
- 7:08Speaker 3: and now a tap dance. And I will say more
- 7:12Speaker 3: than once, when I have been in trouble at home
- 7:14Speaker 3: with Heidi, I sort of think of Richard Gear going
- 7:16Speaker 3: and now a tap dance.
- 7:18Speaker 2: Also that year. All right, I got one thousand and two.
- 7:22Speaker 2: We gotta hit pause here. I'm noticing a trend. Hold on,
- 7:25Speaker 2: You're not getting out of jail on this one. All right,
- 7:26Speaker 2: I got it. There's a trend here. Are you a
- 7:29Speaker 2: Broadway musical guy? I'm not making fun I just have
- 7:32Speaker 2: never asked you this question before. I've gone to I
- 7:35Speaker 2: don't know, maybe four or five you know plays. Hamilton's
- 7:40Speaker 2: one of them, for example, that I've seen. Wicked was
- 7:42Speaker 2: another one. Most of the time, it's going to New
- 7:44Speaker 2: York with my wife and we'll go see a play
- 7:46Speaker 2: because that's on her list. But I'm noticing a trend here.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Do you like will you go to the Kennedy Center
- 7:51Speaker 2: this year for some of the plays.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Absolutely hell, yes, And in fact I have already. I
- 7:56Speaker 3: saw Le Miz just a couple of weeks ago in
- 7:58Speaker 3: the Kennedy Center. It was fantastastic Ley Miz, Ley Miz
- 8:02Speaker 3: or Hamilton or I think the two greatest musicals ever died.
- 8:05Speaker 3: I love Le Miz. In fact, I'll tell you a
- 8:08Speaker 3: story in just a minute about Ley Miz. Back when
- 8:13Speaker 3: I was living for the summer in New York after
- 8:16Speaker 3: my first year of law school. I'm living there and
- 8:20Speaker 3: I send my mother an airplane ticket via FedEx flyer
- 8:25Speaker 3: to New York, take her to Le Miz, take her
- 8:27Speaker 3: to see Camelot, and take her out to a fancy dinner.
- 8:31Speaker 3: We had a great weekend, just just my mom and me.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Also in two thousand and two was Gangs in New York.
- 8:36Speaker 3: It didn't win Best Picture, but great film. Daniel day
- 8:39Speaker 3: Lewis rough Rugged, really well done. The next year, two
- 8:43Speaker 3: thousand and three, the Best Picture winner was Lord of
- 8:46Speaker 3: the Rings Return of the King. All three of the
- 8:48Speaker 3: Lord of the Rings movies came out in the two thousands.
- 8:50Speaker 3: All three were nominated for Best Picture, only number three
- 8:53Speaker 3: one none of them make the list. All three of
- 8:56Speaker 3: them are great movies, fantastic adaptations of of probably the
- 9:01Speaker 3: greatest fantasy book ever written. All right, let's move forward
- 9:05Speaker 3: to two thousand and six. Two thousand and six, a
- 9:08Speaker 3: movie that came out that is not on this list
- 9:10Speaker 3: and should be is a movie called Amazing Grace. Amazing Grace.
- 9:14Speaker 3: If you haven't seen it, I would recommend you go
- 9:16Speaker 3: see it. I'd recommend you take your kids to it.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Amazing Grace is the true story of William Wilberforce. William
- 9:23Speaker 3: Wilberforce was a Member of Parliament in the United Kingdom
- 9:28Speaker 3: and he led the fight to end the slave trade
- 9:31Speaker 3: in Britain and Britain at the time, the slave trade
- 9:35Speaker 3: was the leading industry in the UK and Wilberforce, as
- 9:40Speaker 3: a young MP, he leads the fight and it is inspirational,
- 9:44Speaker 3: it is powerful, and at the end of his life
- 9:47Speaker 3: he succeeds in getting the slave trade abolished. And do
- 9:52Speaker 3: you know where the title comes from? Ben, Where's that
- 9:55Speaker 3: the title of the movie, Amazing Grace comes from? Of course,
- 9:58Speaker 3: the Great Gospel him Amazing Grace. Uh. The person who
- 10:03Speaker 3: wrote it, who was a friar, was friends with Wilberforce,
- 10:07Speaker 3: and before he became a friar, he had been the
- 10:11Speaker 3: captain of a slave ship. And you think of the
- 10:15Speaker 3: words of amazing grace, amazing grace, how sweet the sound
- 10:19Speaker 3: that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost
- 10:22Speaker 3: but now I'm found. Was blind, but now I see,
- 10:25Speaker 3: and you think like it. It is hard to think
- 10:28Speaker 3: of a more evil profession than being the captain of
- 10:31Speaker 3: a slave ship. He had murdered people, he had whipped people,
- 10:34Speaker 3: he had obviously enslaved people, and yet he repented and
- 10:39Speaker 3: became a friar and gave his life to Christ. And
- 10:42Speaker 3: that you think of the guilt and horror and evil
- 10:46Speaker 3: that man had committed. To write maybe the greatest, greatest
- 10:50Speaker 3: him ever ever written. That's where the title comes from.
- 10:54Speaker 3: That it's from a book by Eric but Texas. Fantastic movie,
- 10:58Speaker 3: of course, not on the New York Times list.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You look at these movies that are left off, and I'm.
- 11:03Speaker 2: A true story guy. I love true stories. There are
- 11:07Speaker 2: some movies that I just I think of instantly. If
- 11:10Speaker 2: someone said, hey, give me ten movies that you got
- 11:13Speaker 2: to see. One of those, I don't know if you've
- 11:15Speaker 2: ever watched it. Man on Fire with Denzel Washington. True story,
- 11:18Speaker 2: actually great movie, incredible movie, and I go to those
- 11:23Speaker 2: and Saving Private Ryan, I go, you know, these are
- 11:28Speaker 2: the types of movies that I watch over and over again,
- 11:31Speaker 2: and it's like Hollywood hates them, and they were successful.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Well, and Saving Private Ryan is another phenomenal movie. And
- 11:39Speaker 3: I went last year to Normandy for the eightieth anniversary
- 11:42Speaker 3: of D Day and I actually got to meet Tom
- 11:44Speaker 3: Hanks and Steven Spielberg. And look, both of their politics
- 11:48Speaker 3: are are left. But I said to both of them,
- 11:50Speaker 3: thank you, thank you for bringing bringing World War two
- 11:54Speaker 3: alive to so many people. And I will say the
- 11:57Speaker 3: first thirty minutes of Saving Private Ryan, when they're landing
- 12:01Speaker 3: on that beach and the war, I will tell you
- 12:05Speaker 3: that genuinely changed my view about war. Listen, I've never
- 12:09Speaker 3: served in the military. I've never been in combat. And
- 12:11Speaker 3: you know, look, when you're growing up as a kid,
- 12:13Speaker 3: as a young boy, you're like, Okay, if I was
- 12:15Speaker 3: in war, I'd be tough and I'd try to survive.
- 12:18Speaker 3: And one of the things that opening thirty minutes for
- 12:21Speaker 3: me like made me see in a way I never
- 12:25Speaker 3: had before, was how utterly random it can be. One
- 12:28Speaker 3: guy is dead because his head was in the wrong place.
- 12:32Speaker 3: And if his head had been six inches to the
- 12:34Speaker 3: left or right, he'd still be alive. And just the
- 12:36Speaker 3: utter randomness and brutality of it. And I'll tell you
- 12:40Speaker 3: something interesting, Ben, My uncle was a Vietnam vet and
- 12:44Speaker 3: he spent about forty years as a counselor at the VA.
- 12:48Speaker 3: And he said when the movie Saving Private Ryan came out,
- 12:51Speaker 3: it was the first movie that had gotten the sound
- 12:54Speaker 3: of warfare right, the sound of gunshots and ricochet. And
- 12:59Speaker 3: my uncle said he had that's who'd been at Vietnam,
- 13:02Speaker 3: and the movie triggered their PTSD. They were back in
- 13:05Speaker 3: combat and they would come in and and and seek
- 13:07Speaker 3: counseling because it brought them back. And I mean, that's
- 13:10Speaker 3: the power of cinema to trans transport you to a
- 13:14Speaker 3: different life, a different time, a different world. And and
- 13:16Speaker 3: and it's it's powerful and beautiful if it's not just
- 13:20Speaker 3: just a agenda for left wing propagandizing.
- 13:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and you go back to, as you mentioned, propagandizing,
- 13:29Speaker 2: and that's one of the core things here. I also
- 13:32Speaker 2: look at some of these movies that are on this list,
- 13:35Speaker 2: and they do have just a disdain also for family.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Did you notice that, like it's it's the extreme of
- 13:41Speaker 2: Hollywood that they're promoting is quote the best.
- 13:45Speaker 3: No, I think that's exactly right, and and it's there
- 13:51Speaker 3: is look the fact that people don't go see these movies.
- 13:55Speaker 3: People like to see movies there. There are a lot
- 13:57Speaker 3: of big blockbusters. It's just the folks running Hollywood don't
- 14:02Speaker 3: actually like anything that that that moviegoers go go see.
- 14:06Speaker 3: You know, if you move on to to two thousand
- 14:08Speaker 3: and seven, two thousand and eight, two thousand and nine,
- 14:10Speaker 3: a couple that were on the list, No Country for
- 14:13Speaker 3: old Men, great movie. I agree with them on that
- 14:16Speaker 3: there will be blood another excellent movie. One of the
- 14:19Speaker 3: movies they left off was that Departed. Departed as a
- 14:22Speaker 3: great great story and in fighting organized crime, and it
- 14:27Speaker 3: really well done. And then one another one they included
- 14:31Speaker 3: that I agree that I agree with is The Dark Knight.
- 14:33Speaker 3: And The Dark Knight I got to say, was a
- 14:36Speaker 3: fantastic superhero movie. Yes, but but Heath Ledger's Joker was
- 14:42Speaker 3: twisted it. I think it will go down as one
- 14:45Speaker 3: of the greatest villain portrayals in cinema. It's right right
- 14:49Speaker 3: up there with with Hannibal Lecter. It's right up there
- 14:51Speaker 3: with Darth Vader of like classic all times. The creepy
- 14:58Speaker 3: nonchalance of the evil of he Ledger in Dark Knight
- 15:01Speaker 3: was truly spectacular.
- 15:04Speaker 2: All right, Senta, let's get back into it. I do
- 15:06Speaker 2: want to ask real quick, you're if you were on
- 15:09Speaker 2: a desert island. This is what I love doing shows
- 15:11Speaker 2: like this. You're on a desert island. You can only
- 15:14Speaker 2: take five DVDs with you. Now, I've given you a
- 15:18Speaker 2: Blu Ray, but I'm giving you above VHS quality only five.
- 15:21Speaker 1: What five movies are you taking with you?
- 15:23Speaker 3: And why oh look, my number one favorite movie is
- 15:27Speaker 3: The Princess Bride. I've probably seen it one hundred times
- 15:29Speaker 3: or more. I would take the Godfather trilogy, and I
- 15:33Speaker 3: would take Scarface. Those are my top three. I might
- 15:38Speaker 3: well throw Fletch onto that list. Fletch is pretty fabulous, great,
- 15:44Speaker 3: great movie, funny as all get out. Early Eddie Murphy
- 15:51Speaker 3: I love just about everything, but Beverly Hills cop or
- 15:55Speaker 3: Trading Places are probably two of the very best early
- 15:58Speaker 3: Eddie Murphy that are just hysterical. So that Ingladiator might
- 16:04Speaker 3: well make the list. So so you know, I'm sort
- 16:06Speaker 3: of rejecting your hypo and taking more than five. But
- 16:08Speaker 3: but that's that would be the bag from which I
- 16:11Speaker 3: was pulling.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Ha ha, And you all right, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 16:14Speaker 2: tell you there is a different there's a difference between
- 16:16Speaker 2: you and I. By the way, because in age, this
- 16:19Speaker 2: is when it shows, Senator, I have never seen the
- 16:22Speaker 2: movie Fletch.
- 16:23Speaker 1: I just googled it. As you said it.
- 16:25Speaker 2: It came out at nineteen eighty five. I was four
- 16:27Speaker 2: years old. You were obviously older than I am. Uh,
- 16:30Speaker 2: and we're able to see it. So I don't even
- 16:32Speaker 2: know what Fletch is about.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Okay, Ben, I love you, but you're a communist. You're
- 16:36Speaker 3: a philistine. You have been raised by wolves in a cave.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Go watch Fletch. It's Chevy Chase. It is hysterical. I've
- 16:47Speaker 3: probably seen Fletch fifty times. And and then you know, well, Grant,
- 16:51Speaker 3: who heads up my security detail. Grant and I are
- 16:54Speaker 3: about the same age, and I think the only way
- 16:57Speaker 3: Grant and I communicate is in movie quotes, most of
- 16:59Speaker 3: which are from Fletch. Like It's It's every line of it,
- 17:02Speaker 3: much like The Princess Bride. Every line of Fletch is exquisite.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So it's Chevy Chase. But what's the premise of the movie.
- 17:09Speaker 3: So Fletch Irwin Fletcher is an investigative reporter for the
- 17:14Speaker 3: La Times. But it's a comedy, and so he goes
- 17:18Speaker 3: under cover. But he wears all sorts of different outfits
- 17:21Speaker 3: on the beach and he's investigating drug dealing on the beach.
- 17:25Speaker 3: But it's just it's funny as hell. There are all
- 17:29Speaker 3: sorts of lines, love your body, Larry. It's all ball
- 17:32Speaker 3: bearings these days, none of it. This will make sense
- 17:35Speaker 3: without I will say one scene that that everyone who
- 17:39Speaker 3: knows the movie knows is Moon River. I will say
- 17:43Speaker 3: that that would That would be when when Fletch was
- 17:47Speaker 3: getting an exam and he does does say to the doctor,
- 17:54Speaker 3: ever do time. Doc at the end of the day
- 17:57Speaker 3: said I'm sorry, I couldn't find anything. Well, it's not
- 17:59Speaker 3: for lack of looking.
