- 0:00Luke chapter 4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from
- 0:04the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness for
- 0:0740 days, being tempted by the devil.
- 0:10And he ate nothing during those days.
- 0:12And when they had ended, he became hungry.
- 0:14And the devil said to him, If you are the Son of God, tell
- 0:17this stone to become bread. And Jesus answered him, it is
- 0:21written, Man shall not live on bread alone.
- 0:25And he led him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world.
- 0:27In a moment of time the devil said to him, I will give you all
- 0:31this domain and its glory, for it has been handed over to me,
- 0:35and I shall give it to whomever I wish.
- 0:37Therefore, if you worship before me, it shall all be yours.
- 0:41Jesus answered him, It is written, You shall worship the
- 0:44Lord your God and serve him only.
- 0:47And he led him to Jerusalem, had him stand on the pinnacle of the
- 0:51temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, throw
- 0:54yourself down from here. For it is written, he will
- 0:57command his angels concerning you to guard you, and on their
- 1:02hands they will bear you up, so that you will not strike your
- 1:05foot against a stone. And Jesus answered and said to
- 1:08him, It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the
- 1:11test. When the devil had finished
- 1:14every temptation, he left him until an opportune time.
- 1:17And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and
- 1:20news about him spread through all the surrounding district.
- 1:23And he began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by
- 1:25all. And he came to Nazareth, where
- 1:28he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he
- 1:30entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read.
- 1:33And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him.
- 1:36And he opened the book and found the place where it was written.
- 1:39The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he anointed me to
- 1:42preach the gospel to the poor, and he has sent me to proclaim
- 1:45release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind,
- 1:48to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the
- 1:51favorable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, gave it
- 1:55back to the attendant, and sat down.
- 1:57And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him.
- 2:00And he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been
- 2:03fulfilled in your hearing. And all were speaking well of
- 2:06him and wondering at the gracious words which were
- 2:09falling from his lips. And they were saying, Is this
- 2:12not Joseph's son? And he said to them, No doubt
- 2:16you will quote this proverb to me, Physician, heal yourself.
- 2:19Whatever we heard was done at Capernaum do here in your
- 2:22hometown as well. And he said, truly, I say to
- 2:25you, no prophet is welcome in his hometown.
- 2:29But I say to you, in truth, there were many widows in Israel
- 2:32in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years
- 2:35and six months, when a great famine came over all the land.
- 2:39And yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath
- 2:43in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
- 2:46And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the
- 2:49prophet, And none of them was cleansed, but only Naman the
- 2:52Syrian. And all the people in the
- 2:54synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things.
- 2:57And they got up and drove him out of the city, and led him to
- 3:00the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in
- 3:03order to throw him down the Cliff.
- 3:05But passing through their midst, he went his way.
- 3:08And he came down to Capernaum, the city of Galilee, and he was
- 3:11teaching them on the Sabbath. And they were amazed at his
- 3:14teaching, for his message was with authority.
- 3:17In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an
- 3:20unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, Let us alone,
- 3:24What business do we have with each other?
- 3:26Jesus of Nazareth, have you come to destroy us?
- 3:30I know who you are, the Holy One of God.
- 3:33But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be quiet and come out of him.
- 3:36And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst of the
- 3:39people, he came out of him without doing him any harm.
- 3:42And amazement came upon them all, and they began talking with
- 3:45one another, saying, What is this message?
- 3:47For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits,
- 3:51and they come out. And the report about him was
- 3:53spreading into every locality in the surrounding district.
- 3:57Then he got up and left the synagogue and entered Simon's
- 4:00home. Now Simon's mother-in-law was
- 4:03suffering from a high fever, and they asked him to help her.
- 4:06And standing over her He rebuked the fever and it left her, and
- 4:10she immediately got up and waited on them.
- 4:13While the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick
- 4:16with various diseases, brought them to Him, and laying His
- 4:19hands on each one of them, He was healing them.
- 4:21Demons also were coming out of many shouting, You are the Son
- 4:24of God. But rebuking them He would not
- 4:26allow them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ.
- 4:30When day came, Jesus left and went to a secluded place, and
- 4:34the crowds were searching for Him and came to Him and tried to
- 4:36keep Him from going away from them.
- 4:38But he said to them, I must preach the Kingdom of God to the
- 4:42other cities also, for I was sent for this purpose.
- 4:45So he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
