- 0:00When it comes to family wealth.
- 0:01It's not just about the numbers.
- 0:03It's about values, trust,
- 0:05and the conversations that shape legacy.
- 0:07So how do you get it right?
- 0:09We're going to break it all down for you
- 0:10and a lot more right now.
- 0:11On UBS Trending.
- 0:24Hi everybody and welcome to UBS Trending I'm Anthony Pastore.
- 0:27Thanks for joining us today
- 0:28for this episode
- 0:29that I'm here to sit with my friend and colleague Judy
- 0:32Spalthoff the Head of the Family Office,
- 0:34an Ultra High Net Worth Client Services here at UBS.
- 0:36Great to see you, Judy. Good to be with you.
- 0:39You know,
- 0:39these conversations about conversations we've had before,
- 0:42and you're
- 0:43talking about these types of conversations
- 0:45with many of our clients and, all of the folks that are walking
- 0:49around the floors of our offices
- 0:50so they know how to have informed conversations as well.
- 0:53So I really think it would be really helpful to talk about
- 0:56why discussions that are happening with families,
- 0:58whether it's about legacy,
- 0:59whether it's about the great wealth transfer,
- 1:01so many conversations that should be happening.
- 1:03Talk about the importance of those conversations
- 1:05and why they need to be happening yesterday, you know.
- 1:08Yeah. Yeah. Yesterday.
- 1:09Look, I think at the end of the day,
- 1:12it's not just about the wealth transfer,
- 1:13it's about the wealth transitions.
- 1:14So you can have an a great estate plan.
- 1:17But if you don't explain the estate plan
- 1:18or explain your intentions
- 1:20within your estate plan,
- 1:21you're missing opportunities with with your adult children.
- 1:24And it's always, you know, the question is, when do I start?
- 1:26Right. When.
- 1:27And it's really about maturity, but it's about easing in.
- 1:30It's not like jumping into, you know, an ocean.
- 1:32You could get your feet wet first
- 1:34and just start with the conversation
- 1:35around values and things like that. Yeah.
- 1:37Well that's that's the part.
- 1:38It's like people with a lot of emotional conversations.
- 1:42It's hard to know how to get started
- 1:44because it's like you don't plan to sit at a table with
- 1:48whoever the family member is and say, hey,
- 1:49I want to talk about your estate plan when you might die or what
- 1:53we're going to do with this, or
- 1:54what are the values of our family.
- 1:56So those those are really important things to say, okay,
- 1:59how do we get started?
- 2:00What's the way to bring up the conversation about values,
- 2:04about legacy, about the family?
- 2:05How do you
- 2:05what do you say to clients who ask you those questions?
- 2:07Look, I think it's not necessarily something you have to go alone
- 2:10on, right?
- 2:11I think the idea of using an advisor
- 2:13or using a facilitator to make this more of a
- 2:16about the business of being family
- 2:18versus sort of just the family business
- 2:19or things like that,
- 2:20and really make it a little bit more formal than feels natural.
- 2:24But use that facilitator aka or UBS Financial Advisor,
- 2:27or one of the members of my team and Family
- 2:29Office Solutions to help ease into those conversations.
- 2:33That feels money is still the number one taboo.
- 2:36And how do we break that down?
- 2:38And it's really a facilitated conversation that can be helpful.
- 2:40Yeah, it is
- 2:41definitely a taboo topic that is really tough to get started.
- 2:45Whether it's a family
- 2:46or to some of your, you know, you're in a relationship
- 2:48and you're
- 2:49ready to walk down the aisle, it's all of a sudden
- 2:51you have to have that money conversation.
- 2:52So yeah, having a facilitator certainly would be a big help.
- 2:56Let me ask you, Judy, because, you know,
- 2:58for those families that want to get started
- 2:59outside of maybe having a facilitator,
- 3:01which I think would be a fantastic idea,
- 3:03like our financial advisors
- 3:04or like we said, you have great resources on your team.
- 3:07You, yourself have been in many of these meetings.
- 3:09What are some ways that some practical steps that folks can do
- 3:13to kind of get the conversation started,
- 3:15or at least plan for it when it finally happens
- 3:17and you get the family at the table.
- 3:19You know,
- 3:19I think
- 3:20one of the things that we recommend
- 3:21is talking about how it was all made. Right.
- 3:23So there's no mystery that there's money there.
- 3:25You don't necessarily
- 3:25have to, we'll say, open the kimono to pull up the balance sheet,
- 3:28but you can talk about the hard work.
- 3:30And I think that's part of the scariness
- 3:32of the money conversation
- 3:33within the generations
- 3:34is I don't want to negate their their purpose,
- 3:38or I don't want them to think
- 3:39that there's so much money that they'll get that
- 3:40they're not going to pursue, something of their lifestyle
- 3:44or their passions or college,
- 3:45you know, and have purposeful lives.
- 3:47I think the idea is like,
- 3:48this is how hard I worked
- 3:50to keep those values in place and to talk about it.
- 3:52But if you make it a mystery,
- 3:53if you don't talk about what's really important
- 3:55and what they hope to,
- 3:57you know, we leave more than what's in our bank accounts. Yeah.
- 3:59So if you don't focus on that too,
- 4:01if you only talk about money, that's all they'll hear about.
- 4:03Right.
- 4:04And we've had conversations with our colleague, Mark
- 4:07sitch who's talks about family office,
- 4:09and I've asked him that question.
- 4:10How do you then get all there may be multiple generations
- 4:14in that family getting together to talk about you use
- 4:17we use the word values. We throw it around a lot.
- 4:19But it is interesting
- 4:20because the older generation
- 4:22and the younger generation
- 4:22may just have completely different values.
- 4:25So it is about communicating those values to each other,
- 4:28obviously in a respectful way.
- 4:29But also sometimes it's about respecting the perspective
- 4:33of the other generation. Right.
- 4:34And so is why is grandpa like that?
- 4:36Or why is dad so hard pressed about X, Y, and Z?
- 4:38And so sometimes talking about
- 4:40what happened in your formidable years in the way you grow up?
- 4:43A lot of people have different relationships with money, right.
- 4:46And so it could be that you have the scarcity relationship
- 4:48and you're thinking about the scarcity,
- 4:50even though you have millions
- 4:51and millions of dollars in the bank account,
- 4:52you still may feel that scarcity relationship
- 4:55versus the abundance relationship that someone else has.
- 4:57So we just need to bring these things to light.
- 4:59These conversations can be really interesting and meaningful
- 5:02to have sometimes easier with the facilitator.
- 5:04I'll go back to that.
- 5:05But it's you still have to have the conversations.
- 5:07Yeah.
- 5:08And what's what's sort of a key.
- 5:10I mean, obviously being transparent and open
- 5:13is probably a way to do that.
- 5:15What role can philanthropy then play?
- 5:17Because we talk about this as well.
- 5:19You know,
- 5:19obviously philanthropy is a major
- 5:21part of a lot of our clients lives.
- 5:23How does that play a role in family values?
- 5:26The conversations that could be happening,
- 5:27because obviously
- 5:28there may be different causes that each member of the family
- 5:32maybe nothing to do with the generation might be interested in.
- 5:36Right.
- 5:36So philanthropy can play a really integral role.
- 5:39It's not the only role.
- 5:40Some people use it as a default.
- 5:41And we wanted to also say this is about transference of values.
- 5:45And so if we want to help our community write large,
- 5:47it doesn't always have to be that we have to put the name
- 5:50of our side of our building,
- 5:51or we have to support this x, y, and z cause
- 5:53it's just a matter of transferring the values
- 5:55that we are fortunate
- 5:57and we need to prepare ourselves to make an impact.
- 6:00I think there's also, a mis guidance that philanthropy is easy.
- 6:03Philanthropy is not easy. Philanthropy.
- 6:05There's
- 6:05I think, over 1.8 million charities just in our country alone.
- 6:09So helping them not just find the direction
- 6:12of being philanthropic,
- 6:13but helping them make great choices
- 6:14is also something that can be discussed as a family.
- 6:17Right.
- 6:17And subsequently also that we're talking
- 6:19there's a, the Family Office Global Family Survey, is just
- 6:23has just been released.
- 6:24And there are a lot of interesting data points that came out from
- 6:27that survey, like, you know, where people are concerned about or,
- 6:32how artificial
- 6:32intelligence is playing even more of a role in family offices.
- 6:36What did you what was there anything that surprised you in
- 6:38the results is really the question.
- 6:40So not necessarily surprised us
- 6:41because we're meeting with family offices every single day.
- 6:44Right.
- 6:44But so I is, as you were
- 6:45saying, is at the top of the list
- 6:47when it comes to investing themes.
- 6:48So 65% of family offices,
- 6:52you know, allocate to AI,
- 6:53making it the number one most widely used investment theme.
- 6:56That said, they also see a bubble.
- 6:59Right.
- 6:59And so people I think are channeling 2000
- 7:01when the tech bubble burst
- 7:02said, there's just so many amazingly huge companies
- 7:06with massive valuations, in the AI space.
- 7:09And I think everyone's AI heads are up.
- 7:11There's there's a bubble going on. Right.
- 7:13That's the question that the younger generation
- 7:15might ask their dad.
- 7:16It's like, why are you so freaked out about this?
- 7:17Well, I lived through 2009
- 7:20and I feel like I know what could happen, not easily.
- 7:22And geopolitics obviously is top of mind.
- 7:25Not surprising
- 7:26considering what's going on right now in the world.
- 7:27So obviously that is a concern
- 7:29for our clients over the next five years.
- 7:30Great stuff in that survey, by the way.
- 7:32Yeah, sure.
- 7:33I mean, look, you said geopolitics
- 7:34and this
- 7:34we just
- 7:35it's notable to mention that this we surveyed our clients before,
- 7:38the Iran crisis was happening, right.
- 7:40The war in Iran.
- 7:41But they do say 56% of U.S.
- 7:43family offices even before that, cited
- 7:45major geopolitical conflict and global trade war
- 7:48as a major concern.
- 7:49Yeah, Judy, thank you.
- 7:50I know there's there's a whole lot to unpack there.
- 7:52And I would recommend that,
- 7:53you know, people watching
- 7:54if they would like
- 7:55a copy of the Global Family Office Survey
- 7:57to reach out to their financial advisor at UBS.
- 7:59But great to have you here in the studio here.
- 8:00Congratulations on the report.
- 8:02Thank you.
