- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Docs, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning, I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan.
- 0:17And this is Connecting the Docs for Wednesday,
- 0:20December 31, 2025. Happy New Year's Eve. Happy
- 0:25New Year's Eve to you too. And for anyone traveling,
- 0:28just a heads up, we're seeing snow squalls from
- 0:30the Great Lakes all the way to the Mid -Atlantic.
- 0:33Yeah, and on the other coast, heavy rain and
- 0:35flash flood warnings in Southern California through
- 0:38New Year's Day, so be careful out there. Right.
- 0:40And here at home in Sacramento, a dense fog advisory
- 0:43until about 11 zero a .m. So typical winter morning
- 0:48for us. OK, let's take a quick look at the markets.
- 0:50We're seeing a little bit of a pullback as the
- 0:51year closes out. Just a slight pause. Yeah, the
- 0:54Dow closed down about one hundred and forty two
- 0:56points, which is point three zero percent. Same
- 1:00story for the S &P 500. Also down point three
- 1:03zero percent. Nothing too dramatic and Bitcoin
- 1:05dipped just a little down about half a percent
- 1:07sitting just under $88 ,000 But you know, it's
- 1:11had an incredible year overall. It really has
- 1:13Okay before we jump into our top stories from
- 1:15the Morningstar report. We want to thank our
- 1:17partners at Old Glory If you're still hunting

- 1:39% off your entire purchase. Check them out at
- 1:42oldglory .com. All right, let's get into it.
- 1:45OK, first up. A huge story about big tech strategy.
- 1:49It looks like Meta has just basically pivoted
- 1:52overnight into the enterprise market. They've
- 1:54done it by acquiring a Singapore -based AI startup
- 1:58called Manus. And this is a massive deal. How
- 2:00big are we talking? Over $2 billion, and this
- 2:03is really key. It's not one of those classic
- 2:05talent good -os where they just buy the engineers.
- 2:07Manus is a real business. It's already running.
- 2:09Oh yeah, it's pulling in well over $100 million
- 2:12in annual recurring revenue. Meta is buying an
- 2:15instant, mature business line. So what does Manus
- 2:18actually do? I saw the term agentic first approach.
- 2:21Right. So for you trying to wrap your head around
- 2:23that, it's not just a fancy chat bot. Think of
- 2:25it as a digital employee, a digital employee.
- 2:28Exactly. It's a general purpose AI agent that
- 2:31can handle really complex, multi -step tasks
- 2:34like coding, deep market research, data analysis,
- 2:38all. without leading a human to guide it at every
- 2:41step. Wow. OK. The scale is just astounding.
- 2:44It's processed 147 trillion tokens and powers
- 2:4880 million virtual computers. It's a plug and
- 2:52play enterprise AI. And that's the real so what
- 2:54here, isn't it? Yeah. Because unlike Microsoft,
- 2:57Google, or Amazon, who have their huge cloud
- 2:59platforms to sell AI tools, Meta's been stuck.
- 3:02They've been stuck. They use AI internally for
- 3:04their ad business, but they haven't had a real
- 3:06way to sell it to other companies. changes that
- 3:09instantly. And you can tell it's a serious business
- 3:11move from the internal structure. Oh, absolutely.
- 3:14The Manny CEO, Xiao Hong, is reporting directly
- 3:16to Meta's COO, Javier Olivan. He's not reporting
- 3:19to the AI research group. Which signals they're
- 3:21creating a whole new business arm. They know
- 3:24enterprise sales are a different beast. It's
- 3:26a totally different game, but that's the real
- 3:27challenge, right? I mean, even with all of Meta's
- 3:30money, how do you crack that market? Yeah, you've
- 3:32hit companies with decades of trust built up
- 3:34with Microsoft or IBM, why would they suddenly
- 3:38switch over to, you know, a meta product? It's
- 3:42a great question. But the promise of a true digital
- 3:45employee might be so powerful that the cost of
- 3:48not buying it becomes too high to ignore. But
- 3:51there was another huge hurdle they had to clear
- 3:53first, the geopolitics. Right. This is where
- 3:56it gets really interesting. Manus had Chinese
- 3:59founders, its parent company drew scrutiny from
- 4:01US senators. That's usually deal killer. In this
- 4:04climate, absolutely. So Metta was hyper aggressive
- 4:08about cleaning this up. They've committed to
- 4:10completely severing all ties with China post
- 4:13acquisition. What does that actually mean? It
- 4:15means shutting down their China specific operations
- 4:17like an AI assistant they had there and removing
- 4:19any Chinese ownership. It's them building a political
- 4:23firewall around this new business. A firewall.
- 4:25That's a great way to put it. Okay, so if Meta
- 4:29is building a digital firewall, let's talk about
- 4:31the hardware firewall the US government is trying
- 4:33to build around AI itself. This is our second
- 4:37story, and it's a $50 billion tug -of -war over
- 4:41NVIDIA's chips. So the big news is that the Trump
- 4:43administration has actually approved the sale
- 4:46of NVIDIA's very powerful H200 AI chips to customers
- 4:51in China. Which is a complete reversal of the
- 4:54previous ban. It's a huge deal. And for you at
- 4:56home, the H -200 is, it's a beast. It's nearly
- 4:5910 times more powerful than what was previously
- 5:01allowed for export to China. So this is a massive
- 5:04compromise. Nvidia wanted to sell their even
- 5:06better chips, the Blackwell generation, but this
- 5:08is a massive leap forward for China. It is. But
- 5:11the U .S. government, well, they got their pound
- 5:12of flesh. The tariff. The tariff. A staggering
- 5:1625 % surcharge on the sales revenue that goes
- 5:18right back to the U .S. government. And that's
- 5:20for any chip maker, right? Nvidia, Intel, AMD.
- 5:23Anyone who wants to sell these high -end chips
- 5:25to China. And that tax gets applied when the
- 5:28chips go from Taiwan to the U .S. for inspection
- 5:30before heading on to China. 25 % is huge. But
- 5:34I guess when the market is worth $50 billion,
- 5:36it's a cost they're willing to eat. You have
- 5:38companies like Alibaba and ByteDance lining up.
- 5:41Right. But here is the fascinating twist. Just
- 5:44as the U .S. finally opens the door, China is
- 5:47now thinking about imposing its own internal
- 5:49limits on who can buy the H -200. Wait, so the
- 5:52seller finally says yes, and now the buyer's
- 5:54saying... Hang on, maybe we shouldn't use it.
- 5:57Precisely. The idea is that Chinese companies
- 6:00would have to go through this whole approval
- 6:01process and prove why a domestic chip, like one
- 6:04from Huawei, can't do the job. So it's not about
- 6:07the technology, it's about national pride. National
- 6:10pride and a long -term strategy to boost their
- 6:12own homegrown chip industry. It's a huge statement,
- 6:15even if it slows them down in the short term.
- 6:17And this leaves Nvidia in a bizarre spot. They
- 6:20get access to the market, but the market's own
- 6:22government might be artificially shrinking it.
- 6:24Exactly. And meanwhile, back in the US, you have
- 6:26senators calling this a colossal economic and
- 6:29national security failure. The political heat
- 6:32is just getting started. It really feels like
- 6:35the rules are being written and rewritten every
- 6:37single day on this. They are. It's the central
- 6:39conflict of the global economy right now. OK,
- 6:42so shifting from these regulatory battles to
- 6:45a very, very physical risk to the infrastructure
- 6:49that carries all this data. Yeah, our final story
- 6:51takes us to the Baltic Sea, where a tanker has
- 6:54been seized for causing just massive damage to
- 6:57undersea cables. This is just a wild story. It's
- 7:00a stark reminder of how fragile the physical
- 7:03Internet really is. So Finnish authorities have
- 7:05charged the captain and two officers of a tanker
- 7:08called the Eagle S. And the ship is registered
- 7:11in the Cook Islands, but it's suspected of being
- 7:13part of Russia's shadow fleet, which That term
- 7:16alone raises some red flags. It does for you
- 7:18listening The Shadow Fleet is basically this
- 7:20network of often older uninsured ships used to
- 7:24get around international sanctions and scrutiny
- 7:26So not exactly following the rules. Yeah, and
- 7:29what they're accused of doing is just It's hard
- 7:32to believe they dragged their anchor along the
- 7:34seabed for 90 kilometers 56 miles. It is not
- 7:38a small mistake. No, that is a sustained deliberate
- 7:42act and the damage is immense. It severed the
- 7:47S -Link 2 power cable connecting Finland and
- 7:49Estonia plus four major internet lines. And the
- 7:53cost, I saw the number, it's staggering. The
- 7:55immediate repair costs are estimated at a minimum
- 7:57of 60 million euros. So about 70 million US dollars
- 8:02to fix the damage from one ship's anchor. Right.
- 8:05And you know, while they were able to reroute
- 8:07services, think about what these cables carry.
- 8:09Financial transactions, phone calls, all our
- 8:11data. An incident like this could be catastrophic.
- 8:14And given the location, the Baltic Sea and the
- 8:16Shadow Sleet connection, this is being treated
- 8:18as more than just an accident. Absolutely. It's
- 8:20raising huge sabotage concerns across NATO and
- 8:23the EU. It turns a maritime incident into a major
- 8:26international security flashpoint. And of course,
- 8:29there's a huge legal battle now. The defendants
- 8:31are questioning whether Finland even has jurisdiction.
- 8:34It just shows that our international laws weren't
- 8:36really designed for a world where one ship can
- 8:39cause 70 million dollars in damage to the foundation
- 8:41of the digital economy. It's an incredible story.
- 8:45Okay, before we wrap things up, we want to give
- 8:47a shout out to another one of our sponsors, Skony.
- 8:49If you're a golfer, you need to check them out.
- 8:51Skony makes premium golf shoes that are unbelievably
- 8:54comfortable. They really are. And just like with
- 8:56Old Glory, you can use the promo code SNARFL
- 8:58at checkout for 15 % off your entire purchase.
- 9:02The website is scony .com. OK, so let's quickly
- 9:05recap the three dots we connected today. First,
- 9:08we have Meta making a massive strategic pivot
- 9:10into enterprise. Right. They're buying the AI
- 9:13company Manus and building a huge geopolitical
- 9:16firewall around it to make the deal work in the
- 9:18West. Then we've got the global AI hardware race,
- 9:21with the US finally allowing Nvidia to sell powerful
- 9:24H200 chips to China, but with a huge 25 percent
- 9:27tariff. And at the same time, China might restrict
- 9:29access to those very chips to boost its own domestic
- 9:32industry. It's an incredibly complex situation.
- 9:35And finally, a reminder that the Internet is
- 9:37intensely physical and vulnerable. A suspected
- 9:41shadow fleet tanker caused 60 million euros in
- 9:44damage to critical undersea cables in the Baltic
- 9:46Sea. It just shows that all this amazing tech
- 9:49we talk about. It's all built on foundations
- 9:51that are, well, pretty fragile. They're vulnerable
- 9:54to politics, to national pride, and even to a
- 9:57single misplaced ship anchor. We're here to help
- 10:00it snarfle, so reach out on our website if you
- 10:02have any more questions. That's a wrap on today's
- 10:08top stories. Remember, tech doesn't have to be
