- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In Luke chapter 16, Jesus tells
- 0:45the story of an unnamed rich man and a poor man named Lazarus.
- 0:49On the surface these two have nothing in common, but the
- 0:52parable puts them on common ground in that, as humans do,
- 0:57both of them die. Listen to this story as Jesus
- 1:00tells it. Now there was a rich man, and he
- 1:02habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in
- 1:06splendor every day. And a poor man named Lazarus was
- 1:09laid at his gate, covered with sores, and longing to be fed
- 1:13with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man's
- 1:15table. Besides, even the dogs were
- 1:18coming and licking his sores. Now the poor man died and was
- 1:21carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom.
- 1:24And the rich man also died and was buried in Hades.
- 1:27He lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far
- 1:31away and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried out and said,
- 1:34Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus, so that he may
- 1:38dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue,
- 1:42for I am in agony in this flame. But Abraham said, Child,
- 1:46remember that during your life you received your good things,
- 1:49and likewise Lazarus bad things. But now he is being comforted
- 1:53here, and you are in agony. And besides all this, between US
- 1:58and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to
- 2:01come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may
- 2:04crossover from there to us. And he said, Then I beg you,
- 2:08father, that you send him to my father's house, for I have 5
- 2:11brothers, in order that he may warn them, so that they will not
- 2:15also come to this place of torment.
- 2:17But Abraham said they have Moses and the prophets let them hear
- 2:21them, but he said no father Abraham.
- 2:24But if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.
- 2:28But he said to him, if they do not listen to Moses and the
- 2:31prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises
- 2:34from the dead. Now there's a lot that could be
- 2:37impact in this story, but I want to show you 2 main takeaways.
- 2:41First, we see a contrast between the rich man and Lazarus.
- 2:45One lived for himself in this life.
- 2:48The rich man lived in splendor every day.
- 2:50He did not seek what was eternal, rather he lived for his
- 2:54own temporal pleasure. Meanwhile, Lazarus experienced
- 2:58pain, sorrow, and suffering in this life.
- 3:01But we see from the text that despite his suffering, his faith
- 3:04and hope were in God. The rich man's comfort and
- 3:07pleasure passed away at his death.
- 3:09His short time on earth ran out, and there was nothing left for
- 3:12him but torment and agony. Meanwhile, Lazarus endured his
- 3:16suffering and faith and received the reward of faith and eternity
- 3:20with God. Which path will we choose?
- 3:23Will we pursue our own comfort and pleasure here and now,
- 3:27comfort that will pass away? Or will we pursue God no matter
- 3:30our circumstances and seek a reward that will last throughout
- 3:33eternity? Secondly, I don't want you to
- 3:36miss this. Look at the rich man's response
- 3:39after his death. He wants to go back to warn his
- 3:43brothers of the torment that awaits them if they do not
- 3:45repent. He pleads with Abraham that
- 3:48Lazarus might go to tell his brothers of what's coming for
- 3:50them, but Abraham refuses. He tells him they have Moses and
- 3:55the prophets. Let them hear them.
- 3:58Here is the reality. We live in a world that is
- 4:01largely rejecting God, a world that is refusing the truth of
- 4:04the gospel in large part. But listen to the testimony of
- 4:08those in hell, the ones who have been eternally separated from
- 4:11God. They are begging that someone
- 4:14might go and tell their loved ones of the hope that can be
- 4:16found in Jesus. They're pleading that their
- 4:19loved ones might turn from their selfishness and arrogance and
- 4:22trust in Christ. Heed their testimony.
- 4:26Do not seek your own in this life.
- 4:29Seek Christ and proclaim Him. Spread the news of Jesus
- 4:32salvation throughout your spheres of influence while there
- 4:35is yet time. Implore your brothers and
- 4:38sisters and friends and neighbors to repent.
- 4:41Implore them with your words. Implore them with your actions.
- 4:45This life is a vapor. Don't waste it and.
