- 0:00Luke chapter 23 Then the whole body of them got up and brought
- 0:04him before Pilate, and they began to accuse him, saying, We
- 0:07found this man misleading our nation, and forbidding to pay
- 0:10taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ a king.
- 0:14So Pilate asked him, saying, Are you the king of the Jews?
- 0:18And he answered him and said, It is as you say.
- 0:21Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, I find
- 0:24no guilt in this man. But they kept on insisting,
- 0:27saying, He stirs up the people teaching all over Judea,
- 0:30starting from Galilee, even as far as this place.
- 0:33When Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
- 0:36And when he learned that he belonged to Herod's
- 0:38jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was in
- 0:42Jerusalem at that time. Now Herod was very glad when he
- 0:45saw Jesus, for he had wanted to see him for a long time because
- 0:48he had been hearing about him and was hoping to see some sign
- 0:51performed by him. And he questioned him at some
- 0:53length, but he answered him nothing.
- 0:56And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there
- 0:58accusing him vehemently. And Herod with his soldiers,
- 1:01after treating him with contempt and mocking him, dressed him in
- 1:04a gorgeous robe and sent him back to Pilate.
- 1:07Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that
- 1:09very day, for before they had been enemies with each other.
- 1:13Pilot summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
- 1:16and said to them, You brought this man to me as one who
- 1:18incites the people to rebellion. And behold, having examined him
- 1:21before you, I found no guilt in this man regarding the charges
- 1:25which you make against him. No, nor has Herod, for he sent
- 1:29him back to us, and behold, nothing deserving death has been
- 1:32done by him. Therefore I will punish him and
- 1:34release him. Now he was obliged to release to
- 1:37them at the feast 1 prisoner. But they cried out altogether,
- 1:40saying away with this man and release for us Barabbas.
- 1:44He was one who had been thrown into prison for an insurrection
- 1:46made in the city and for murder. Pilate, wanting to release
- 1:50Jesus, addressed them again, but they kept on calling out, saying
- 1:53crucify, crucify him. And he said to them the third
- 1:57time, why? What evil has this man done?
- 2:00I have found in him no guilt demanding death, therefore I
- 2:03will punish him and release him. But they were insistent with
- 2:06loud voices asking that he be crucified.
- 2:09And their voices began to prevail.
- 2:11And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand be granted.
- 2:14And he released the man they were asking for, who had been
- 2:17thrown into prison for insurrection and murder.
- 2:19But he delivered Jesus to their will.
- 2:22When they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene,
- 2:25coming in from the country, and placed on him the cross to carry
- 2:27behind Jesus. And following him was a large
- 2:30crowd of the people and of women who were mourning and lamenting
- 2:33him. But Jesus turning to them, said,
- 2:35Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for me, but weep for
- 2:39yourselves and for your children.
- 2:41For behold, the days are coming when they will say, Blessed are
- 2:43the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that
- 2:46never nursed. Then they will begin to say, to
- 2:50the mountains fall on us, and to the hills cover us.
- 2:53For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will
- 2:56happen when it is dry? Two others also who were
- 2:59criminals, were being LED away to be put to death with Him.
- 3:02When they came to the place called the Skull.
- 3:04There they crucified him and the criminals, one on the right and
- 3:08the other on the left. But Jesus was saying, Father,
- 3:11forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing, and
- 3:14they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
- 3:17The people stood by looking on, and even the rulers were
- 3:20sneering at him, saying He saved others, let him save himself.
- 3:24If this is the Christ of God, his chosen one.
- 3:27The soldiers also mocked him, coming up to him, offering him
- 3:29sour wine and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save
- 3:33yourself. Now there was also an
- 3:35inscription above him. This is the King of the Jews.
- 3:39One of the criminals who was hanging there was hurling abuse
- 3:41at him, saying, Are you not the Christ?
- 3:43Save yourself and us. But the other answered and
- 3:47rebuking him, said, Do you not even fear God, since you are
- 3:50under the same sentence of condemnation?
- 3:52And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving
- 3:55what we deserve for our deeds. But this man has done nothing
- 3:58wrong. And he was saying, Jesus,
- 4:01Remember Me when you come in your Kingdom.
- 4:03And he said to him, truly I say to you to day, you shall be with
- 4:06me in paradise. It was now about the 6th hour,
- 4:09and darkness fell over the whole land until the 9th hour, because
- 4:13the sun was obscured and the veil of the temple was torn in
- 4:16two. And Jesus crying out with a loud
- 4:19voice, said, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
- 4:23Having said this, he breathed his last.
- 4:25Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he began praising
- 4:28God, saying certainly this man was innocent.
- 4:31And all the crowds who came together for this spectacle,
- 4:33when they observed what had happened, began to return,
- 4:36beating their breasts. And all his acquaintances and
- 4:39the women who accompanied him from Galilee were standing at a
- 4:41distance seeing these things. And a man named Joseph, who was
- 4:45a member of the council, a good and righteous man, He had not
- 4:48consented to their plan in action.
- 4:50A man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for
- 4:54the Kingdom of God. This man went to Pilate and
- 4:56asked for the body of Jesus. And he took it down and wrapped
- 4:59it in linen cloth and laid him in a tomb cut into the rock
- 5:03where no one had ever lain. It was the preparation day, and
- 5:07the Sabbath was about to begin. Now the women who had come with
- 5:10him out of Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body
- 5:13was laid. Then they returned and prepared
- 5:15spices and perfumes, and on the Sabbath they rested according to
- 5:19the commandment.
