- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 3, we read of
- 0:45the late night meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus, described
- 0:48in this chapter as a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews.
- 0:52It is in this conversation that Jesus tells Nicodemus and you
- 0:55and me, the modern readers, that he must be born again.
- 0:59Not born again physically, but born of the Spirit.
- 1:02He must be made new. He must be regenerated, brought
- 1:05to new spiritual life. Nicodemus asks Jesus how can
- 1:10these things be? Jesus responds and tells
- 1:12Nicodemus how it is that he can have eternal life.
- 1:16Listen to what he says. No one has ascended into heaven
- 1:20but he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man, the Son
- 1:24of Man, Jesus has descended from heaven.
- 1:26There is no one whose merit would allow them to ascend into
- 1:29heaven based on their own works. And so we are reliant on God
- 1:33Himself to come down to meet us. The only way we are entering
- 1:37God's Kingdom is if He escorts us there himself.
- 1:41So how is it that Christ makes us new?
- 1:44What is it that He does that allows us entrance into heaven?
- 1:47Listen to what Jesus says next. As Moses lifted up the serpent
- 1:51in the wilderness, Even so must the Son of Man be lifted up so
- 1:55that whoever believes will in him have eternal life.
- 1:59Here Jesus is referencing an Old Testament story where, after
- 2:02complaining against God and against his servant Moses, the
- 2:05people of Israel are struck with fiery serpents sent from God
- 2:09that bit the people and killed many of them.
- 2:12After the people confess their sin to the Lord and to Moses,
- 2:15God instructs Moses to fashion a serpent out of bronze and put it
- 2:19up on a pole. And whenever the people looked
- 2:22at that bronze serpent, they were healed.
- 2:25So what does that have to do with Jesus?
- 2:27How is he like the bronze serpent of the Old Testament?
- 2:30And what does that have to do with Nicodemus being born again?
- 2:33In the story of the serpents, God tells Moses to specifically
- 2:36fashion a serpent out of bronze. Of all the ways God could have
- 2:40chosen to heal the people, he deliberately chose to require
- 2:43them to look at the very thing that was plaguing them.
- 2:46In order to be freed from their curse, they had to look upon the
- 2:49curse itself. The serpent lifted up on the
- 2:52pole, and it is like that serpent that the Son of Man must
- 2:56be lifted up. Jesus here is foreshadowing His
- 2:59death. He will be lifted up on a cross
- 3:01of wood. He will become the curse for the
- 3:04sake of those who would put their trust in Him.
- 3:06Second Corinthians 521 says He made him who knew no sin to be
- 3:11sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness
- 3:15of God in him. Jesus becomes sin on our behalf.
- 3:20He, like the serpent, is raised up on the tree.
- 3:23He bears the curse for us. But just like the story of the
- 3:26serpents, for all who will look on him, for all who will fix
- 3:30their faith and hope on Jesus Christ, they will be saved.
- 3:34So how can we be born again? We look up at the Son of man who
- 3:39became sin for us. That was true for Nicodemus, and
- 3:43that's true for you and me today.
- 3:46And when we believe in Christ, when we trust Him for salvation,
- 3:50we can rejoice in the beautiful truth of the very next verse in
- 3:52this account of Jesus and Nicodemus.
- 3:55For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,
- 3:59that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have
- 4:03eternal life.
