- 0:00Speaker 1: My next Guests is an amazing person. Been knowing her
- 0:03Speaker 1: since my l A days way back in two thousands,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and she's one of the premier management and production companies
- 0:09Speaker 1: for family and faith inspired content. Check this out. Her
- 0:14Speaker 1: current production slate is certainly impressive, with two shows on air,
- 0:18Speaker 1: The Next Big Thing BT and Loving Listing v H one,
- 0:22Speaker 1: two Lifetime movis Victoria Gotti, My Father's Daughter February, which
- 0:27Speaker 1: was just this year, and The Clark's Sisters, which I
- 0:30Speaker 1: interviewed and she says early Carter Keen I for must
- 0:36Speaker 1: see TV program has even as seven major networks anteing up. Okay, now,
- 0:41Speaker 1: first of all, Roshawn does not have one show on TV.
- 0:47Speaker 1: They're clamoring for her abilities. Please welcome, good friend. Long time,
- 0:51Speaker 1: been so long since I've talked to because she has
- 0:53Speaker 1: one of the best laughs in Hollywood. Please walking to
- 0:56Speaker 1: money making conversations producers extraordinary Holly Carter, Hi, Hey, big time?
- 1:06Speaker 1: How are you doing? Big time? Okay, let's put the
- 1:11Speaker 1: blast with the faith and all this. But I'm mentioning
- 1:14Speaker 1: all this stuff. This has to be uh you know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: here's I was. I was at NBC UNI and and
- 1:24Speaker 1: I mentioned your name and they just gushed with what
- 1:29Speaker 1: compliments about how professional you are, that you are a
- 1:33Speaker 1: creative genius, that you are producer extraordinaire, and it's just
- 1:41Speaker 1: it's just watching you grow your brand. Tell us about
- 1:46Speaker 1: what is your brand? Ms Carter? Um, You know what,
- 1:51Speaker 1: First of all, that's so awesome. It's awesome to know
- 1:54Speaker 1: that you know, your reputation is speaking for you. That
- 2:00Speaker 1: means a lot to me. Um. But um, you know
- 2:04Speaker 1: my brand is redemptive, provocative, informative, entertaining and aspirational content.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's That's what I'm love. That's what represents my faith,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you know, my way of life. Um, what I believe is?
- 2:22Speaker 1: Now what that ask this question? Then, because you're ended
- 2:25Speaker 1: with it, what do you believe in in terms of
- 2:31Speaker 1: my faith? Well? You say, you say your aspiration, your
- 2:34Speaker 1: faith and what you believe in. That that was a
- 2:36Speaker 1: lead off into something else besides, is it is it
- 2:39Speaker 1: all tied to faith? Is it believed in the storytelling
- 2:42Speaker 1: that you want to tell or that the people you
- 2:44Speaker 1: want to have a relationship with when you're producing these
- 2:47Speaker 1: type of shows. What is that all tied to? I
- 2:49Speaker 1: guess I apologize for that confusing question, but that's when
- 2:52Speaker 1: I'm extending it beyond where you ended it, because it's
- 2:55Speaker 1: all about relationships, correct, got it? Yeah, I believe in relationship. Said,
- 3:00Speaker 1: you know that God allows us to create, cultivate, maintain, um,
- 3:07Speaker 1: because you know, relationships are key and um, you know
- 3:11Speaker 1: some relationships are seasonal reasonabal and then there's some for
- 3:17Speaker 1: a lifetime. And you know, I thank God for the
- 3:20Speaker 1: wisdom to know the difference in the three seasonal reasonable
- 3:24Speaker 1: and and for a lifetime. There you go on point,
- 3:27Speaker 1: just trying to educate my audience to understand how you
- 3:30Speaker 1: are driving your concept because people approach me all the
- 3:33Speaker 1: time with creative ideas. I can make a lot of
- 3:36Speaker 1: money with this ra Sean, Okay, I got it. But
- 3:39Speaker 1: what's the basis of it? What's what's the plan? Who?
- 3:43Speaker 1: What talent has attached to this? And so one of
- 3:45Speaker 1: the things that I always enjoyed doing was Emerged Summit.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Are you still doing Emerge summits? Oh? Yes, we're going
- 3:52Speaker 1: into year eleven next year. Um. That you know that
- 3:56Speaker 1: is an extension of my purpose in Hollywood. Merged the
- 4:01Speaker 1: sacred and the secular bring opportunity and platforms to other
- 4:04Speaker 1: believers who are creative. And you know and want to
- 4:07Speaker 1: impact culture through entertainment and so Merge is a very
- 4:12Speaker 1: very big part of what I do and what I
- 4:14Speaker 1: represent and it will be a part of my legacy.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Now if it started traveling now, maybe I used to
- 4:19Speaker 1: always go to l A. And then I saw it
- 4:21Speaker 1: on the East coast. Is it still based on the
- 4:23Speaker 1: in l A. Or is it traveling from different to
- 4:26Speaker 1: different cities. Well, we are one year on in l
- 4:30Speaker 1: A for the three day event, and then the next
- 4:33Speaker 1: year we travel um. You know, so we are you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: it's a national event now, but each every other year
- 4:39Speaker 1: we're in a different market. Okay, So what market was
- 4:44Speaker 1: it in? This is the Merge summer we're talking about?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Is Angeley put the complete weekend of education, empowerment and entertainment.
- 4:51Speaker 1: I used to always attended in Los Angeles nows on
- 4:53Speaker 1: the road, So what what market was it in the
- 4:57Speaker 1: Merge summer? Well, this of the year that it toured
- 5:02Speaker 1: and so we were at Essence in July. So we
- 5:04Speaker 1: curated UM three major conversations UM in July at Essence Festival, Friday,
- 5:12Speaker 1: Saturday and Sunday. Okay, cool, So now will it be
- 5:16Speaker 1: back in l A? Back in l a okay, cool,
- 5:19Speaker 1: three days three days. Uh. And so with that being said,
- 5:23Speaker 1: when does it When do you start promoting that? Is
- 5:25Speaker 1: it promoting at the top of the year. How do
- 5:27Speaker 1: you do that? We will send out kind of a
- 5:30Speaker 1: save the day by October uh this year for next year,
- 5:35Speaker 1: and it's the last week in August next year. Okay, cool?
- 5:39Speaker 1: Let me know so I can support you through my
- 5:41Speaker 1: social media fan club members. I'd love to put that
- 5:45Speaker 1: in my monthly newsletter and promote your brand from the
- 5:48Speaker 1: Merged summit. Okay, I will certainly let you know. Thank
- 5:52Speaker 1: you so much for shan. I appreciate that. Okay, cool.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Let's talk about what Let's talk about how did you
- 5:56Speaker 1: come up with creative ideas? Let's talk about let me
- 6:00Speaker 1: into your head of ms carter because your your platforms
- 6:04Speaker 1: are our faith based. Uh. How do you how do you?
- 6:08Speaker 1: How do you shit around and just think of an idea?
- 6:10Speaker 1: Do you make a phone call? Do you do you
- 6:13Speaker 1: have a staff that you pitched to? How does the
- 6:16Speaker 1: evolution of creativity happen in your world? Um? You know,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it's a mixture of several things. Sometimes people bring me ideas,
- 6:27Speaker 1: other times I curate them based on something that I
- 6:31Speaker 1: want to do UM and then and then there are
- 6:35Speaker 1: times when the team will generate an idea, so it
- 6:39Speaker 1: definitely m varied, like to show that's on NBC, I'm
- 6:43Speaker 1: sorry to show that's on d et calling Next six Things. UM.
- 6:48Speaker 1: That idea was brought to me and I developed it.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I brought in the team, we developed it, I sold it,
- 6:54Speaker 1: and that's how it got on the air. It was
- 6:57Speaker 1: kind of a germ of the idea and we ended
- 6:59Speaker 1: up kind of refurbishing, kind of repackaging and redeveloping it
- 7:04Speaker 1: to what it is now. The idea that's on v
- 7:08Speaker 1: H one. It was just literally based on my relationship
- 7:12Speaker 1: with one of the stars of the show. It was
- 7:14Speaker 1: his continent, it was his business, and I thought this
- 7:17Speaker 1: would really make a good television show. Let's let's do this.
- 7:21Speaker 1: And that's how that happens. That's Love and Listings right, Yes,
- 7:26Speaker 1: that's mother listening. There's some vich one and then we're
- 7:28Speaker 1: talking about the next big thing. This is on there's
- 7:31Speaker 1: on BT and that the judges, Damon dash On their
- 7:35Speaker 1: Tina Davis, and there's twelve up and coming R and
- 7:38Speaker 1: B and hip hop artists. Through this. Basically, you say
- 7:41Speaker 1: it's grueling development. So I'm assuming that you start with
- 7:44Speaker 1: twelve and you end with one. That's how it works.
- 7:46Speaker 1: On the next big things. Yeah, there's there's one winner
- 7:49Speaker 1: that's crowned the next big things, and then after that,
- 7:52Speaker 1: then after that you move on. So I'm assuming that
- 7:56Speaker 1: in your office somewhere in Hollywood, they're just a there's
- 8:00Speaker 1: just just giant pitch room. Correct. Mm hmmm. Yes, we
- 8:05Speaker 1: have what's called of development development time, and during that
- 8:09Speaker 1: development time we talked about new ideas, things that have
- 8:12Speaker 1: been tip people bring up um ideas and and then
- 8:17Speaker 1: we also you know, continue the development of current projects
- 8:21Speaker 1: that are on our slates. Cool um talking to Holly Carter,
- 8:25Speaker 1: an amazing TV producer, management manager of talent Um Relationships.
- 8:31Speaker 1: That's the key when you keep hearing her talk about uh.
- 8:34Speaker 1: First of all, she had a strong faith, but she
- 8:36Speaker 1: understands the value relationship. We'll be back with more money
- 8:39Speaker 1: making conversations with Holly Carter. Hi. This with Sean McDonald
- 8:44Speaker 1: and you're listening to money making conversation. I'm talking to
- 8:47Speaker 1: a dear friend. Um, Hollywood. It's interesting about when you
- 8:52Speaker 1: when you go on a journey of life, you know
- 8:54Speaker 1: you have ups and downs, and you're trying to figure
- 8:56Speaker 1: your figure out your path because sometimes you think your
- 8:59Speaker 1: path hit in one direction. You think you have the
- 9:01Speaker 1: relationship that's gonna carry you to the end, and all
- 9:04Speaker 1: of a sudden threw a big curve. What happens when
- 9:06Speaker 1: that curve is thrown you away? What happens when you
- 9:09Speaker 1: didn't see it coming? How do you plan for that?
- 9:11Speaker 1: How do you avoid that? How do you? And I say,
- 9:14Speaker 1: what do you avoid that? Is by having multiple streams
- 9:16Speaker 1: of income. So if somebody tells you they don't like
- 9:20Speaker 1: the way you get up that day, then you can
- 9:22Speaker 1: tell them, no worries, I'm good. And so I always
- 9:25Speaker 1: tell people multiple streams of income is the key to
- 9:28Speaker 1: be able to have some formal control in your life.
- 9:31Speaker 1: So you constantly have to produce, You have to be created.
- 9:34Speaker 1: You constantly have to say that I'm not done. You
- 9:36Speaker 1: can't rely on the same Joe joke or the same
- 9:39Speaker 1: trick move to get you out there. Otherwise they stopped
- 9:42Speaker 1: coming to you because they said, oh, she does that
- 9:43Speaker 1: type of production. Oh she does that. My guess, Holly
- 9:47Speaker 1: Carter is that versatile person that I'm talking about. You
- 9:51Speaker 1: look at her Slater programming, and it's all different, Miss Carter.
- 9:55Speaker 1: How do you accomplish that task of being so unique,
- 9:59Speaker 1: being so well in this day and age. You you
- 10:02Speaker 1: have to be versatile. You can't just do one thing.
- 10:06Speaker 1: And you you know, you never know where you're gonna
- 10:07Speaker 1: find the light. Um when you look at love and
- 10:11Speaker 1: listening and next big things. Uh, they are both a
- 10:17Speaker 1: little different from what I've done in the past, from
- 10:20Speaker 1: the Preacher's franchise to the Shears to um Fix my Choir,
- 10:26Speaker 1: those things, you know, they're they're very different. They're young,
- 10:29Speaker 1: they're millennial, they're a little more edgy, but at the
- 10:32Speaker 1: end of the day, they're still redemptive opportunity um in
- 10:36Speaker 1: all of you know, in both shows and and that's
- 10:39Speaker 1: you know, that's the part of my brand. But you
- 10:42Speaker 1: but you have to be versatile. Now, that doesn't mean
- 10:45Speaker 1: you start to do everything. I just I do believe though,
- 10:48Speaker 1: you have to be versatile in order to keep up
- 10:52Speaker 1: this culture. And I'm very centered on pop culture and
- 10:55Speaker 1: how I want to make a difference there. What are
- 10:57Speaker 1: you what are you most proud of that you that
- 11:00Speaker 1: you're doing currently or you have done? Um, you know
- 11:06Speaker 1: what I would say I'm really proud of the Clark
- 11:10Speaker 1: Sisters movie because it took me almost fifteen years to
- 11:15Speaker 1: bring that to past and because what it represents to
- 11:20Speaker 1: the Black church, black church culture, because you know, this
- 11:25Speaker 1: family is iconic, and to be able to bring this
- 11:29Speaker 1: to the forefront, to the light has been a big,
- 11:33Speaker 1: big lesson for me. I mean, I'm proud of all
- 11:36Speaker 1: of my shows. I'm excited about everything I'm working on.
- 11:41Speaker 1: So because that took so long, um, and because what
- 11:44Speaker 1: I know it means to the Black church culture, it
- 11:47Speaker 1: makes me extra proud. When you say that when you
- 11:50Speaker 1: the black choke church culture, the faith culture, that's that's
- 11:56Speaker 1: that would I would I be wrong in saying that
- 11:58Speaker 1: puts additional pressure on the story? Is it? And how
- 12:00Speaker 1: you tell it? Because you're dealing with brands that are
- 12:04Speaker 1: that that you can't play with their brands just the
- 12:07Speaker 1: church just there. It's tied to a faith that they
- 12:10Speaker 1: have that they've cultivated over the years. Does that put
- 12:13Speaker 1: extra pressure on how you produce their products? Oh? Absolutely yeah,
- 12:18Speaker 1: Because you know, it's like serving multiple masters. You've got
- 12:21Speaker 1: to serve the family, you've got to serve the network,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and you've got to serve the audience. So it's pressure,
- 12:28Speaker 1: all right, And that's why I was looking at the
- 12:31Speaker 1: reading the just the bideline about your company Multifaceted Entertainment
- 12:35Speaker 1: company specializing in talent partnerships, brand development, and television film production.
- 12:42Speaker 1: The thing I thing I lean on is that talent partnership.
- 12:45Speaker 1: What exactly does that mean When you say that, I
- 12:48Speaker 1: have a sense of what that is. I just want
- 12:50Speaker 1: you to just detail it a little bit more to
- 12:52Speaker 1: my audience. Talent partnership, because that's we just talked about.
- 12:55Speaker 1: When you're dealing with people who are of strong value
- 12:59Speaker 1: branded relates, ships, and you can't mess with you, you
- 13:02Speaker 1: can't play, and you can't fudge it, you can't go
- 13:04Speaker 1: Hollywood on it because guess what they have to go
- 13:07Speaker 1: back out into that culture and extend their careers to
- 13:10Speaker 1: the next level. Right Well, it literally means, you know,
- 13:17Speaker 1: partnering with the talent to move an idea forward, a
- 13:21Speaker 1: book forward, a brand concept forward, whatever, and that hard
- 13:25Speaker 1: that they are passionate about, you know, and we partner,
- 13:28Speaker 1: we come together. Then that that my job is to
- 13:31Speaker 1: uh figure out the right platform, the right partnership forwards
- 13:35Speaker 1: to move the idea forward. The thing about it that
- 13:39Speaker 1: you know, I asked you that question, Rachean, what what
- 13:41Speaker 1: are you most proud of? And when I think of Holly,
- 13:44Speaker 1: I think of the years I've known you. The thing
- 13:47Speaker 1: that I always loved about you was to merge summit.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I'm just gonna be honest with you. When I did
- 13:53Speaker 1: those I it was so many people who were there
- 13:56Speaker 1: just wanted information on how to win, how to learn,
- 13:59Speaker 1: how to how can I not make the same mistake
- 14:02Speaker 1: over and over again? And it was and it was,
- 14:05Speaker 1: you know, because she get mad at me because you know,
- 14:07Speaker 1: you you come there, you're not supposed to use in it.
- 14:09Speaker 1: You know, salty words, and I would use them periodically.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It was just like my mom on the side, Rashwan.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know where you at, Rashwan, you can't say that.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And it was, it was, it was, it was always.
- 14:21Speaker 1: It was always fun for me to participate because of
- 14:23Speaker 1: the fact that it was about paying it forward. And
- 14:27Speaker 1: that really is something I feel from a from a
- 14:30Speaker 1: a person who looked so far. You are changing the game,
- 14:35Speaker 1: You're you're blessing people, you're opening doors, and do you
- 14:39Speaker 1: see it there the same way I'm seeing it because
- 14:41Speaker 1: of the fact that I know you started and sometimes
- 14:43Speaker 1: you can be so deep in it and just producing
- 14:45Speaker 1: it every year. Now you put it on the road,
- 14:47Speaker 1: which means there's even more complexities to that being produced.
- 14:50Speaker 1: You took it the essence this year. I've seen it
- 14:52Speaker 1: in Baltimore, you know every other years back in Los Angeles.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Were originated from am I and my saying too much.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Are you saying you're dead on with what? What? What?
- 15:03Speaker 1: What you're trying to achieve with the Merge Summit? No,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you're dead on. I mean that's UH. When you go
- 15:10Speaker 1: back and you ask what are you most proud of?
- 15:12Speaker 1: You know, from a project standpoint, I'm proud of all
- 15:16Speaker 1: my projects. What makes the clocks of especial? With what
- 15:19Speaker 1: I said, when you talk about my endeavors or my
- 15:23Speaker 1: ventures or those legacy moments, I think I'm really proud
- 15:27Speaker 1: at the Merge because that to your point, what it represents,
- 15:32Speaker 1: what it does for other believers, what it does for
- 15:34Speaker 1: other creative people. UM the fact that next year will
- 15:38Speaker 1: be launching UH Inset, which is Merge Extension Program, which
- 15:42Speaker 1: will be a accredited um UH Extensions College program for
- 15:49Speaker 1: those who want to take the Merge further. If it's
- 15:52Speaker 1: a nine month program, so that's an extension of Merge
- 15:56Speaker 1: and it's a it's another opportunity to give access, to
- 16:01Speaker 1: give platform, give opportunity. So I am super proud of
- 16:05Speaker 1: what Merge has accomplished, and I'm looking for to be
- 16:09Speaker 1: even bigger. I want to continue to provide opportunity to
- 16:12Speaker 1: continue to connect the dots for people that really have
- 16:16Speaker 1: a heart for entertainment. Well, when you say bigger, just
- 16:22Speaker 1: being nosy, what do you say when you say you
- 16:23Speaker 1: want to be bigger? Was it a bigger facility, bigger
- 16:27Speaker 1: more attendance, bigger talent to participate. What do you mean
- 16:30Speaker 1: when you say bigger, bigger everything I want? I need bigger.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I need bigger partners to make it bigger. I want
- 16:40Speaker 1: more people to experience the opportunity, and I want to
- 16:46Speaker 1: create a bigger and better experience for them. I really do.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I need to be vision oriented exactly what it says
- 16:59Speaker 1: twenty vision awesome. Let's talk about this project, live action
- 17:02Speaker 1: feature film for Fox Family based on your father's life
- 17:06Speaker 1: and development called Music to My Ears. Talk about that,
- 17:10Speaker 1: but it's really based on my dad's uh life work,
- 17:13Speaker 1: what he did with the homeless community, the homeless and
- 17:17Speaker 1: underprivileged and how he used music and um outreach to
- 17:22Speaker 1: help change their lives. And so Divine Franklin and I
- 17:26Speaker 1: are doing this together at Fox Family. We are now
- 17:30Speaker 1: at the stages of a new script and uh hopefully
- 17:35Speaker 1: we will land this plane by the end of the
- 17:38Speaker 1: year and be ready to go into production next year.
- 17:41Speaker 1: And what what now is? Is there going to be
- 17:44Speaker 1: a time period piece and going sending current town? It's
- 17:48Speaker 1: it's it's it's really a uh sister act need yeah
- 17:57Speaker 1: with with angels. It's it's a it's part um live
- 18:03Speaker 1: action and the other part of c g I, and
- 18:06Speaker 1: it's pretty much the c g I p are are
- 18:10Speaker 1: the angels. But it's it's definitely it's definitely like Sister
- 18:13Speaker 1: Acts with Angels. Uh, and a lot of it takes
- 18:16Speaker 1: place in heaven. So it's so it's such a fun story.
- 18:20Speaker 1: That's cool. Then let menages. Are you when I met you,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you were managing talent? Are you managing talent with your
- 18:26Speaker 1: agency now or that's something that you just doing partnerships? No,
- 18:31Speaker 1: I only do talent partnerships, and my focus is strictly
- 18:35Speaker 1: on talent partnerships, and I will I will manage the
- 18:38Speaker 1: projects that have partnered with talent, but that traditional day
- 18:43Speaker 1: to day manages. You know, I no longer do that.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I know, I love it, I love it. But my friend,
- 18:52Speaker 1: I'm so happy you took the time to come on
- 18:54Speaker 1: the show and share your your blessings and also share
- 18:57Speaker 1: your vision. And believe me when I said, when I
- 19:01Speaker 1: spoke to your name, the compliments roared from Rockefeller, They
- 19:04Speaker 1: roared out, and they would not um they didn't slow down.
- 19:08Speaker 1: So keep doing what you're doing and keep winning. And
- 19:11Speaker 1: I appreciate you coming on money making conversations so awesome.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Thank you so much for Seane
