- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:43at 72 verses Mark chapter 14 is easily the longest chapter in
- 0:47the book and it covers some serious ground.
- 0:50In this chapter we see Jesus being anointed with a bottle of
- 0:53costly perfume. Then Judas planned to betray
- 0:56Jesus and Jesus and his disciples taking the Passover
- 1:00meal together all the way to Jesus praying and being arrested
- 1:03in the Garden of Gethsemane and standing before his accusers.
- 1:06And finally, at the end of the chapter, we see Peter's three
- 1:09denials of Christ. Like I said, a lot of ground.
- 1:12I want us to take a minute, though, to look at the Passover
- 1:14meal that Jesus shares with his disciples in verses 17 through
- 1:1826. Listen to those verses.
- 1:22When it was evening, he came with the 12.
- 1:24As they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said,
- 1:27Truly, I say to you that one of you will betray me, one who is
- 1:30eating with me. They began to be grieved and to
- 1:32say to him, 1 by 1, surely not I.
- 1:35And he said to them, It is one of the 12, one who dips with me
- 1:39in the bowl. For the Son of Man is to go,
- 1:42just as it is written of him. But woe to that man by whom the
- 1:46Son of Man is betrayed. It would have been good for that
- 1:48man if he had not been born. While they were eating.
- 1:51He took some bread and after a blessing he broke it and gave it
- 1:55to them and said, Take it, this is my body.
- 1:59When he had taken a cup and given thanks, he gave it to them
- 2:02and they all drank from it. And he said to them, This is my
- 2:06blood of the covenant which is poured out for many.
- 2:09Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the
- 2:12vine until that day when I drink it new in the Kingdom of God.
- 2:16After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
- 2:19If you remember your Old Testament, you'll remember that
- 2:21this Passover meal was first prescribed all the way back in
- 2:24Exodus chapter 12, when God delivered the final plague on to
- 2:28Pharaoh and the Egyptians before the people of Israel were set
- 2:31free from their slavery. God commanded the people of
- 2:34Israel to cover the doorposts of their homes with blood from the
- 2:38unblemished lamb, and to eat inside and haste because they
- 2:42would soon be set free and they needed to be ready to go.
- 2:45During the night, God killed the first born of all the Egyptians,
- 2:49but all those who had their doorposts covered with blood, He
- 2:52spared. And now in Mark chapter 14,
- 2:55Jesus and his disciples are celebrating this annual feast
- 2:58together. But realize what's happening
- 3:00here. Exodus 12 was pointing us to a
- 3:03deeper reality, the truth that the blood of the spotless lamb
- 3:07was the covering required to escape God's righteous judgement
- 3:10on sin. During the meal, Jesus takes
- 3:13bread, breaks it and gives it to his disciples, saying take it,
- 3:16this is my body. And he does the same with the
- 3:19wine. He gives thanks, gives it to
- 3:21them, and they drink it. And he said, this is the blood
- 3:25of the covenant which is poured out.
- 3:27For many, the true Passover lamb was not being eaten that night
- 3:31at the table. The true Passover lamb would
- 3:33hang from a cross On the very next day.
- 3:36Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God, would have his body broken and
- 3:40his blood spilled so that men and women from every tribe and
- 3:43tongue and nation could be made right with God, so they might be
- 3:47forgiven of their sins and given a forever relationship with God
- 3:50Himself. All of the imagery, all of the
- 3:53foreshadowing of Passover was coming to fruition here in the
- 3:57God man, Jesus Christ. And just as surely as those
- 4:01Israelites who stayed in homes whose doorposts were covered by
- 4:05the Lamb's blood escape God's judgement, so too will all those
- 4:09who turn from their sin and trust in Jesus, trust in his
- 4:13death as payment for our sin, and be saved.
- 4:17Hallelujah. What a savior.
- 4:21Yeah.
