- 0:00Acts chapter 13 Now there were at Antioch in the church that
- 0:04was there prophets and teachers, Barnabas and Simeon, who was
- 0:07called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene and Manian, who had been
- 0:11brought up with Herod the tetrarch and Saul.
- 0:14While they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy
- 0:16Spirit said, Set apart from me, Barnabas and Saul for the work
- 0:19to which I've called them. Then when they had fasted and
- 0:22prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
- 0:24So being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to
- 0:27Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.
- 0:30When they had reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word
- 0:32of God in the synagogues of the Jews, and they also had John as
- 0:36their helper. When they had gone through the
- 0:38whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish
- 0:41false prophet, whose name was Bar Jesus, who was with the
- 0:45proconsul Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence.
- 0:48This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word
- 0:51of God. But Alemus the magician, for so
- 0:54his name was translated, was opposing them, seeking to turn
- 0:57the proconsul away from the faith.
- 0:59But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy
- 1:02Spirit, fixed his gaze on him and said, You who are full of
- 1:05all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all
- 1:07righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the
- 1:10straightways of the Lord? Now behold, the hand of the Lord
- 1:13is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a
- 1:16time. And immediately a mist and a
- 1:18darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who
- 1:21would lead him by the hand. Then the proconsul believed when
- 1:24he saw what had happened, being amazed at the teaching of the
- 1:27Lord. Now Paul and his companions put
- 1:30out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphilia.
- 1:34But John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
- 1:37But going on from Perga they arrived at Piscidian Antioch,
- 1:40and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.
- 1:43After the reading of the Law and the prophets, the synagogue
- 1:45officials sent to them saying, Brethren, if you have any word
- 1:48of exhortation for the people, say it.
- 1:50Paul stood up and motioning with his hand said, Men of Israel,
- 1:54and you who fear God, listen. The God of this people, Israel,
- 1:57chose our fathers and made the people great.
- 1:59During their stay in the land of Egypt, with an uplifted arm, he
- 2:03led them out from it. For a period of about 40 years
- 2:06he put up with them in the wilderness.
- 2:07When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan,
- 2:10he distributed their land as an inheritance, all of which took
- 2:13about 450 years. After these things he gave them
- 2:17judges until Samuel the prophet. Then they asked for a king, and
- 2:21God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of
- 2:24Benjamin. For 40 years.
- 2:26After he had removed him, he raised up David to be their
- 2:28king, concerning whom he also testified and said, I have found
- 2:32David the son of Jesse, a man after my heart, who will do all
- 2:35my will. From the descendants of this
- 2:37man. According to promise, God has
- 2:39brought to Israel a Savior Jesus.
- 2:42After John had proclaimed before his coming a baptism of
- 2:45repentance to all the people of Israel, And while John was
- 2:48completing his course, he kept saying, What do you suppose that
- 2:51I am? I am not He, But behold, 1 is
- 2:54coming after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to
- 2:57untie. Brethren, son of Abraham's
- 3:00family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of
- 3:04this salvation has been sent for those who live in Jerusalem.
- 3:07And their rulers, recognizing neither him nor the utterances
- 3:10of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these
- 3:13by condemning Him. And though they found no ground
- 3:16for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be
- 3:19executed. When they had carried out all
- 3:21that was written concerning Him, they took him down from the
- 3:23cross and laid him in a tomb. But God raised him from the
- 3:27dead, and for many days He appeared to those who came up
- 3:30with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are
- 3:33now His witnesses to the people. And we preach to you the good
- 3:36news of the promise made to the fathers, that God has fulfilled
- 3:39this promise to our children, in that He raised up Jesus.
- 3:44As it is also written in the second Psalm, You are my Son
- 3:47today I have begotten you. As for the fact that he raised
- 3:50him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has
- 3:54spoken in this way. I will give you the holy and
- 3:57sure blessings of David. Therefore he also says in
- 4:00another Psalm, You will not allow your holy 1 to undergo
- 4:02decay. For David, after he had served
- 4:05the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was
- 4:08laid among his father's and underwent decay.
- 4:11But he whom God raised did not undergo decay.
- 4:14Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him
- 4:16forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and through
- 4:19Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from
- 4:22which you could not be freed through the law of Moses.
- 4:25Therefore take heed, so that the things spoken of in the prophets
- 4:28may not come upon you. Behold, you scoffers, and marvel
- 4:32and perish. For I am accomplishing a work in
- 4:34your days, a work which you will never believe, though someone
- 4:37should describe it to you. As Paul and Barnabas were going
- 4:40out, the people kept begging that these things might be
- 4:42spoken to them the next Sabbath. Now when the meeting of the
- 4:45synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God fearing
- 4:47proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them,
- 4:51were urging them to continue in the grace of God.
- 4:54The next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the
- 4:57word of the Lord. When the Jews saw the crowds,
- 4:59they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the
- 5:02things spoken by Paul and were blaspheming.
- 5:05Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said it was necessary
- 5:08that the word of God be spoken to you first, since you
- 5:11repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal
- 5:14life. Behold, we are turning to the
- 5:16Gentiles, for so the Lord has commanded us.
- 5:19I have placed you as a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring
- 5:22salvation to the end of the earth.
- 5:24When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and
- 5:26glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as had been
- 5:29appointed to eternal life believed.
- 5:32And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole
- 5:34region. But the Jews incited the devout
- 5:36women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and
- 5:39instigated A persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove
- 5:42them out of their district. But they shook off the dust of
- 5:45their feet in protest against them, and went to Iconium.
- 5:48And the disciples were continually filled with joy and
- 5:51with the Holy Spirit.
