- 1:42Speaker 1: by good friend, cause we talk at least six times
- 1:45Speaker 1: a week. Attorney Benjamin Cropp at least six times a week.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Talked last night. You talked about five times last week.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Been Uh. You know, man, First of all, there's a
- 1:57Speaker 1: there's a spurs special passion I have for you because
- 2:01Speaker 1: of what you do. And I'm just watching you grow
- 2:04Speaker 1: as a as a as a businessman, as an entrepreneur,
- 2:07Speaker 1: as an entertainer. You know, you just wanted to just
- 2:10Speaker 1: practice law man. When did this? When did the lightbulb
- 2:13Speaker 1: in a different direction start happening? Does a trade lan Mark?
- 2:15Speaker 1: And you went in there just to uh, you know,
- 2:18Speaker 1: you know, just just get a verdict of guilty for
- 2:22Speaker 1: somebody who has committed the crime that was wrong. We
- 2:25Speaker 1: have video, you know, we we have we have we had,
- 2:27Speaker 1: we had evidence is audio Rishan, and you know you
- 2:34Speaker 1: were there at the beginning. I'm a civil rights lawyer,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and everything that happens beyond that is just gravy. And
- 2:43Speaker 1: you never know where life is gonna take you. You know,
- 2:46Speaker 1: when you and I talk, we always talk about don't
- 2:49Speaker 1: limit yourself. You know, you never ever put limpus on yourself.
- 2:53Speaker 1: And so that's what I'm doing. I'm following a lot
- 2:56Speaker 1: of good advice from you about this, uh television and
- 3:02Speaker 1: media branding and such. What we did for Traybon was
- 3:07Speaker 1: just very organic and sincere because it was all from
- 3:10Speaker 1: the heart. We took the case because his seventeen year
- 3:14Speaker 1: old child had been killed, and you said that's not right,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and it became the number one news story in the world.
- 3:22Speaker 1: From that point, every time I walked in an airport's
- 3:24Speaker 1: whereby walk, people recognized who I was because I believe
- 3:29Speaker 1: the passion that I displayed and advocating for Traybon. And
- 3:33Speaker 1: then after that the phone just kept ringing. UM. And
- 3:38Speaker 1: so now I'm doing a national law firm to being
- 3:42Speaker 1: crump law firms. So we should try to help more people. Uh,
- 3:46Speaker 1: we've just sued the National Basketball Association. We think not
- 3:50Speaker 1: only when we have that family, but we'll make cold
- 3:54Speaker 1: sale changes as it relates to uh, these sudden cardiac
- 3:59Speaker 1: events that most high performance after lets have a chance
- 4:04Speaker 1: of experiencing, and whether they live or die is going
- 4:07Speaker 1: to depend on the rapid response of appropriate medical attention.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I mean these are high school players, college players, and
- 4:15Speaker 1: so life is evolving until we have evidence of innocence.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Tonight that you pretty much shepherded me to do, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: we talked about what is it if you were given
- 4:26Speaker 1: the platform, would you want to do or tell the world,
- 4:30Speaker 1: And I said, if I had my weight, Reshine, I
- 4:32Speaker 1: would want to tell them about due process of the
- 4:35Speaker 1: law and the fact that we don't always get equal justice,
- 4:40Speaker 1: but we need to be educated about it, and you
- 4:43Speaker 1: took it from there and said, on these wrong for convictions,
- 4:46Speaker 1: everybody needs to know that it can happen to you too,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and let's tell the inspirational story. So it's just been
- 4:52Speaker 1: a journey with shine and today is the fulfillment of
- 4:57Speaker 1: one of those uh plans that we had that we
- 5:00Speaker 1: made reality, you know, And I think that I think
- 5:03Speaker 1: I like the fact that you say journey because a
- 5:05Speaker 1: lot of people who want to be successful, a lot
- 5:07Speaker 1: of people want to open business, a lot of people
- 5:09Speaker 1: want to transition their careers. They should know it doesn't
- 5:13Speaker 1: happen overnight. And it also happens with a lot of
- 5:15Speaker 1: people questioning you and that and when you make these decisions.
- 5:18Speaker 1: But I want to ask this one question because you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and I know for a fact, you know, you get
- 5:23Speaker 1: called on so many cases. Is it? Is it it worth?
- 5:26Speaker 1: How does it affect you when the verdict does not
- 5:28Speaker 1: turn out in the manner because it has to take
- 5:30Speaker 1: a personal toll on you. How does it affect you? Then?
- 5:35Speaker 1: You know, it's so interesting, Rashaan, because Third and Marcia,
- 5:40Speaker 1: like I said, it is my personal hero. And I
- 5:43Speaker 1: have read about Third and Marshall I studied him. Many
- 5:47Speaker 1: people don't understand that a lot of things that happen
- 5:52Speaker 1: is beyond Third Good Marsha's control is beyond my control.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Whether person goes to jail or not, that's up to
- 5:58Speaker 1: the prosecutor. That has nothing to do with being crump.
- 6:02Speaker 1: We've won every case we've ever had. We've got multimillion
- 6:06Speaker 1: dollar verdicts of settlements for Trade Vine parents, Michael Brown parents,
- 6:11Speaker 1: to Merror Rize parents, the thirteen black women that was
- 6:13Speaker 1: raped in Oklahoma City, even though that police officer did
- 6:17Speaker 1: go to jail for two and sixty three years. It's rare.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Well with Third Good Marshall. You know, Brown versus Boys
- 6:24Speaker 1: cases were lost thirteen times up until they got to
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Supreme Court. And people talk and called Third Good
- 6:33Speaker 1: Marsha everything but a child of God. They said, oh,
- 6:36Speaker 1: he's not the right one, he's just not the man.
- 6:40Speaker 1: We need another lawyer and all this stuff. But Third
- 6:43Speaker 1: Good just kept going about the business of saying, I
- 6:46Speaker 1: understand what my cause is, what my purpose is. And
- 6:49Speaker 1: people will often be negative. You just have to tune
- 6:54Speaker 1: that stuff out because they can't see the big picture,
- 6:57Speaker 1: and the big picture you believe Street would get it right,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and I have so much to be thankful for. Rashand
- 7:03Speaker 1: a few and they says, I mean, I'm a country
- 7:06Speaker 1: boyfriend the projects in North Carolina, and now I'm considered
- 7:10Speaker 1: one of the most recognizable successful lawyers in America. Man,
- 7:14Speaker 1: I can't ever be sad about anything that ever happens
- 7:17Speaker 1: in my life. And I know, man, we'll be We've
- 7:19Speaker 1: been going. I eat public bit chicken places, and man,
- 7:22Speaker 1: you know, you know, because I'll be looking at the
- 7:24Speaker 1: regular cause I'm not recognizable, so I'm taking place of
- 7:26Speaker 1: that well, unrecognizable person. Go, they gonna excuse me, Mr
- 7:31Speaker 1: Bank because I take a picture with you. In fact,
- 7:33Speaker 1: you was in l A. And I did the dumb thing.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I said, meet me on the car and I'm just
- 7:37Speaker 1: swinging by a pick up. By the time I got
- 7:40Speaker 1: over there ten people surrounding them in l A. Can
- 7:43Speaker 1: we take pictures to you, Mr? He said, Richard, I
- 7:45Speaker 1: don't ever do that no more. I said, Ben, I forgot,
- 7:47Speaker 1: but I forgot you famous. I forgot my friend brother
- 7:50Speaker 1: is famous. And that's where you at, man, that's and
- 7:52Speaker 1: that's really you know. You know, you have a beautiful wife,
- 7:55Speaker 1: you have a beautiful child, and that takes your toll
- 7:57Speaker 1: because I I've been, I've been in that land where
- 8:00Speaker 1: you you go to a restaurant, people are talking to you.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Your food to get cold, you know, you got to
- 8:05Speaker 1: go in the restroom and then they're waiting on you
- 8:07Speaker 1: when you come out. You know, you know that's that's
- 8:10Speaker 1: a crazy world. But that's the world you live in. Now,
- 8:14Speaker 1: what adjustments do you make to to to deal with that? Man?
- 8:17Speaker 1: Because I know it's an adjustment here, and it's good
- 8:21Speaker 1: having somebody like you who've seen it all before, you know,
- 8:26Speaker 1: give me some advice on it. I think one of
- 8:30Speaker 1: the ones he like, I'm the only family person you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: or Tyler Perry. Stay okay, we've going down that list,
- 8:40Speaker 1: jay Z. You know what I'm saying that Sean McDonald,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Rishan mcgna weigh in the Toldo. But I love to
- 8:47Speaker 1: love and giving me. But I'm gonna stop this madness now,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know, Shan, you get me sign it like I've
- 8:53Speaker 1: just a funny part about it. Keep me talking to me.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I gotta go to Tyler Perry was the one and
- 9:00Speaker 1: I thought I was, I'm gonna stop all this madness.
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm gonna stop all this madness. You know you're my
- 9:10Speaker 1: mentor and whenever I needs talking cross world of life,
- 9:15Speaker 1: I called you for that significant inviting. You need to
- 9:17Speaker 1: stop stop where we we do talk at least six times,
- 9:21Speaker 1: but we do. We do that, we do. My wife
- 9:24Speaker 1: you talking again? Yeah, baby, what's wrong? What's wrong? Can
- 9:27Speaker 1: I talk to you? One? My frad brother. I thought
- 9:29Speaker 1: the frap brother. I usually call my down Yeah yeah, um,
- 9:35Speaker 1: but you know one of the things I was gonna
- 9:37Speaker 1: say it, shine Um tell him were family. You try
- 9:42Speaker 1: to find that balance and it is challenging because we
- 9:45Speaker 1: have the law firm, and I have an excellent team.
- 9:48Speaker 1: I have fourteen lawyers who worked with miss make me
- 9:52Speaker 1: look good. But a lot of times, as you know,
- 9:55Speaker 1: oh too well, people want to talk to you and
- 9:59Speaker 1: they want you and you're trying to be there for
- 10:02Speaker 1: your five year old daughter. My wife got jene Angelie Krupp.
- 10:06Speaker 1: She's very uh considerate because she lets me uh go
- 10:11Speaker 1: chase the dreams. And that's very important to have somebody
- 10:13Speaker 1: in your corner who allows you to try and yeah,
- 10:18Speaker 1: and that that's a that's crucial. That's a whole another
- 10:21Speaker 1: segment on money making conversation. Um. But then at the
- 10:25Speaker 1: crux of the matter, you start trying to prioritize the
- 10:29Speaker 1: things that are important to you, uh and things that
- 10:32Speaker 1: you simply want to do but you can't do. For instance,
- 10:36Speaker 1: I know I have the show coming out of this evening,
- 10:40Speaker 1: and that's great. In California, where I'm at today, there
- 10:44Speaker 1: is the California primaries where they're voting on who's going
- 10:49Speaker 1: to be the nominees for the parties, and then Stefan
- 10:51Speaker 1: Clark's case and Sacramento they're having a rally on the
- 10:55Speaker 1: capital steps. Uh. Nick Cannon is supposed to be there,
- 10:58Speaker 1: and some others trying to get peep out the vote,
- 11:00Speaker 1: especially the young people because in these local elections, the
- 11:04Speaker 1: district attorney makes a world of difference. And so I
- 11:08Speaker 1: had to balance the premiere of evidence of innocence today
- 11:11Speaker 1: knowing that this is the evil the California primary that
- 11:14Speaker 1: they had talked to me when I first got on
- 11:17Speaker 1: stephano class case, and we got to get this d
- 11:19Speaker 1: a out of here because she's never going to look
- 11:22Speaker 1: out for our children and care about our community. And
- 11:25Speaker 1: so that's what I constantly do because I never wanted
- 11:28Speaker 1: to be said that I'm not frightening for the causes
- 11:32Speaker 1: I believe at my court lawyer, and we come back.
- 11:38Speaker 1: We're gonna go in detail about our show. I'm the
- 11:41Speaker 1: one I created, executive deduce the one you started creating
- 11:44Speaker 1: an executive produced evidence of innocence. Back with Money Making Conversation.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I'm your host with Sean McDonald on the phone. Is
- 11:50Speaker 1: the lead attorney or he was? He was the lead
- 11:52Speaker 1: attorney for such an incredible families also leader turning for
- 11:56Speaker 1: a couple of colors. But letna bring it all down
- 11:57Speaker 1: to you. Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, Alicia Thomas Uh currently
- 12:02Speaker 1: Stefan Clark who was britally brutally shot by a Sacramento
- 12:05Speaker 1: police uh Jekeisha Clemens, who was wrestled to the ground
- 12:09Speaker 1: by police, was exposed. The breast was exposed, which was horrible.
- 12:12Speaker 1: While houses Uh is still dealing with the fallout from that.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Is the true van guard and a good friend in
- 12:18Speaker 1: the fight against police brutality. Police. Welcome back to Money
- 12:21Speaker 1: Making Conversation. Attorney Benjamin crump Hey, Good morning, Rashan, so
- 12:27Speaker 1: happy again. I always talk tonight tonight tonight Man, tonight Man.
- 12:32Speaker 1: The show. Ever this event, you put a lot of
- 12:36Speaker 1: personal time with them. It's a limited serial. Let me
- 12:38Speaker 1: just tell everybody they gave us four episodes because it's entertainment,
- 12:42Speaker 1: you know, just because we have a good spirit, we
- 12:44Speaker 1: have a good idea. We want to tell the story,
- 12:47Speaker 1: the motivational story about people who've been in jail for decades,
- 12:51Speaker 1: how they come out, how they dealt with the circumstances,
- 12:54Speaker 1: how they came out real positive people. These are people
- 12:56Speaker 1: that you wouldn't even know walking down the street, would
- 12:59Speaker 1: worried jail for that long because they didn't let the
- 13:02Speaker 1: system beat them. We went to Atlanta, Georgia. We went
- 13:06Speaker 1: to Hartford, Connecticut. We went to Dallas, Texas, went to Portland, Oregan.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I say that to let you know that unjust is
- 13:14Speaker 1: happening all over this country. Correct being cromp absolutely going
- 13:18Speaker 1: in any court room in Americans said in the back
- 13:20Speaker 1: and UFC justice is anything but equal. Now why did
- 13:25Speaker 1: you do this show? We're telling people why it was
- 13:27Speaker 1: important to do a show, because you know it's right
- 13:30Speaker 1: in your wheelhouse, you know, a voice for the unheard, uh,
- 13:34Speaker 1: second chance opportunities, motivating people to realize that speak up,
- 13:39Speaker 1: speak up, don't give up. Yep, you know Rashon, let
- 13:45Speaker 1: me tell people who might not know. Evidence of Innocence
- 13:48Speaker 1: is about wrongfully convicted people who have been exonerated by
- 13:54Speaker 1: clear and convincing evidence and DNA evidence, And so it
- 13:59Speaker 1: was so portant for me to do this show. Rashane
- 14:04Speaker 1: and I were talking about, you know, what would you
- 14:06Speaker 1: wanna do if you could communicate to the masses, Because
- 14:11Speaker 1: more people watch TV than you, they'll ever know what
- 14:13Speaker 1: happened inside of the courtroom. And I said, I would
- 14:17Speaker 1: want to try to affect the hearts and minds of
- 14:19Speaker 1: future jurors to put a very real show on TV
- 14:23Speaker 1: different and that gives the real experience of what many
- 14:27Speaker 1: black people facing the courtroom. And this is one of
- 14:30Speaker 1: the most realistic but yet inspirational UH television shows about
- 14:37Speaker 1: Black people in the criminal justice system that has ever
- 14:40Speaker 1: been produced. And I mean that from the heart. Don't
- 14:43Speaker 1: take my word that I want you to watch UH
- 14:46Speaker 1: these four weeks and you will see that people's faith
- 14:49Speaker 1: and families have overcome just the most horrible injustices you
- 14:55Speaker 1: would ever imagine. And as Rashaun and I kept saying
- 14:58Speaker 1: to the TV one exact it is, this is important
- 15:02Speaker 1: to your audience because it can happen to them, It
- 15:05Speaker 1: can happen to their family members, that can happen to
- 15:07Speaker 1: their loved ones. There are a hundred thousand people sitting
- 15:11Speaker 1: in American prisons who are completely innocent, didn't do anything,
- 15:17Speaker 1: but yet they are there. And unfortunately, the highest percentage
- 15:22Speaker 1: of those people are black people, especially black men. And
- 15:27Speaker 1: that's why I wanted to do this show, because I
- 15:30Speaker 1: was thinking about us. You know that when you say
- 15:33Speaker 1: that the show comes on on Monday nights ten pm
- 15:36Speaker 1: Eastern on TV one every Monday night. If you hear
- 15:39Speaker 1: the show and hear on the podcast, just tune in
- 15:42Speaker 1: on Monday night. And it's important because of the fact
- 15:45Speaker 1: that you know and you interview these people. You got
- 15:48Speaker 1: to set you know, as a producer, you know, my
- 15:51Speaker 1: life isn't so personal. I could walk away, and you
- 15:54Speaker 1: get to hear these stories sitting in there, and you know,
- 15:57Speaker 1: as a sense of helplessness because you've already, unfortunately experienced
- 16:01Speaker 1: the bad side of this this life. You know, ten years,
- 16:06Speaker 1: twelve years, fifteen years, twenty seven years of their lives
- 16:10Speaker 1: have been been taken away. You know, you come out
- 16:13Speaker 1: of jail. You know, closed closed style have changed television
- 16:17Speaker 1: shows have been canceled. Communications where you communicate, direct TV
- 16:21Speaker 1: wasn't even existing. Cell phones wasn't in existence. Companies have merged,
- 16:25Speaker 1: you know, we walked out, they're looking for Hamburger places
- 16:28Speaker 1: and it's closed down, you know, or they's been merging
- 16:30Speaker 1: to another food joint. So that's a really a lot
- 16:34Speaker 1: of the grats. So when you would interview, what was
- 16:37Speaker 1: your biggest takeaway from these four individuals that you interviewed.
- 16:41Speaker 1: You know, the biggest takeaway was that these people are
- 16:44Speaker 1: a lot like the people in my family, and you
- 16:47Speaker 1: will find that there are a lot like the people
- 16:49Speaker 1: in your family. And so when we said could happen
- 16:52Speaker 1: to somebody you know, love, it's real. I mean the
- 16:57Speaker 1: episode tonight with Flicia Roberts fact that she had these
- 17:02Speaker 1: strikes against her and I'm not giving it all away.
- 17:04Speaker 1: He was shot because I wanted to watch. But you know,
- 17:07Speaker 1: she was accused of a Hannish crime, and even though
- 17:11Speaker 1: she had an alibi witness, her own defense lawyer told
- 17:15Speaker 1: her that hold on, you got four strikes against you.
- 17:19Speaker 1: You're poor, you're black, you're a woman, and you're openly gay.
- 17:25Speaker 1: And he said, you got all these strikes against you
- 17:28Speaker 1: you better take this fifteen year plea, even though she
- 17:31Speaker 1: had an alibi witness, even though she declared she didn't
- 17:36Speaker 1: do it. He said, if you don't take this plea,
- 17:39Speaker 1: you're gonna go to that courtroom and you would end
- 17:42Speaker 1: up dying in prison. So she took the plea and
- 17:45Speaker 1: unfortunately spent thirteen years of her life until some dedicated
- 17:50Speaker 1: lawyers got on the case and actually challenged the prosecutors
- 17:55Speaker 1: to produce this alleged evidence that they had. And when
- 17:58Speaker 1: you see the night how they just seeed and misled,
- 18:02Speaker 1: uh and and lied, you will see that we can't
- 18:07Speaker 1: take the prosecuted word. And the police were for the
- 18:10Speaker 1: the gospel and this believe the poor people of color.
- 18:15Speaker 1: We got to believe in our people. Feel in your heart,
- 18:19Speaker 1: you believe that your family member is innocent, you gotta
- 18:22Speaker 1: fight for them. And that's the takeaway I got. All
- 18:26Speaker 1: these people. They were saved by more a good hearted lawyers,
- 18:30Speaker 1: but more importantly Rashan. They were saved because their families
- 18:33Speaker 1: didn't give up on them. Their wives didn't give up
- 18:35Speaker 1: on them, their mothers didn't give up on them, their
- 18:38Speaker 1: fathers didn't give up hope. And so we got to
- 18:41Speaker 1: stand up for our children. And that's that's really important
- 18:43Speaker 1: and that you hear that because in doing this show,
- 18:47Speaker 1: my biggest takeaway it could happen to me, me being
- 18:50Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald, me being uh, it could happen to you be,
- 18:53Speaker 1: It can happen to Adele Henderson, can happen to anybody,
