- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Welcome to Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex.
- 0:18And I'm Morgan. And we're from Snarful Solutions
- 0:20Group. It is Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, and
- 0:24we're here to break down the tech news you need
- 0:26to know. That's right. And first, a quick look
- 0:29at what's going on outside. Here in Sacramento,
- 0:31it's looking like a beautiful day. Oh, yeah Mostly
- 0:34sunny with a high of 57 can't complain about
- 0:37that for January definitely not nationally though
- 0:40It's a bit more active. There are a couple of
- 0:42cold fronts hitting the northwest, right? So
- 0:44that's bringing some heavy mountain snow to the
- 0:47Cascades and the northern Rockies and another
- 0:50storm is moving pretty fast through the upper
- 0:51Midwest and Great Lakes Bringing a wintry mix
- 0:54that should hit the northeast tonight and into
- 0:57Wednesday So, definitely bundle up out there.
- 1:00Alright, let's take a quick peek at the markets.
- 1:02How did things look at the close yesterday? Pretty
- 1:04strong, actually. The Dow Jones jumped up 501
- 1:07points. That's a full 1 .03 % close, just under
- 1:1149 ,000. Yeah, a great start to the year. The
- 1:15S &P 500 was a little more modest. Just under
- 1:1710 points, about 0 .14%. And Bitcoin, I know
- 1:21it's had a strong week. It has. It's seen a tiny
- 1:24dip today, about a quarter of a percent, trading
- 1:26around 93 ,600. But the bigger picture is that
- 1:29it's a... Almost six percent since the end of
- 1:31December. Exactly. A little dip in a very strong
- 1:34upward trend. A solid start to the year all around.
- 1:37It is. Now before we jump into our Morningstar,
- 1:40our Snarf full tech article report, we've got
- 1:43a word from a great sponsor. Yeah, if you're
- 1:46still looking for that perfect gift for a techie
- 1:48friend or really anyone who loves music or sports.
- 1:52You have to check out Old Glory. They're an iconic
- 1:54fan merch store. They've got everything, classic
- 1:56band t -shirts, sports jerseys, just tons of
- 1:59cool stuff. And as listener, you get a great
- 2:01deal. Use the promo code SNARFUL at checkout.
- 2:04That's S -N -A -R -F -U -L, and you'll get 15
- 2:07% off your entire purchase. Just head over to
- 2:10OldGlory .com. OK, let's get into it. Today's
- 2:14report is, well, it's all Nvidia. All Nvidia,
- 2:17all the time, it seems like they just dominated
- 2:20the CES show floor with announcements across
- 2:22the board. You really did. And we're seeing a
- 2:25clear strategy here. It's about expanding their
- 2:27reach in both consumer gaming and the core AI
- 2:31infrastructure that powers everything. Let's
- 2:33start on the consumer side then. Our first story
- 2:36is about GeForce Nnow W, their cloud gaming service.
- 2:40This is a big one for accessibility. They're
- 2:42finally launching native GeForce NW apps for
- 2:45Well, platforms that have felt a bit left out.
- 2:48You mean Linux users, right? Linux users, for
- 2:50sure. And also Amazon Fire TV devices. This is
- 2:54all slated for early 2026. And they tied this
- 2:57timing to the RTX 5080 rollout completing. Now
- 3:00that's for their servers, right? Not the card
- 3:02you put in your PC. Exactly. That's the key clarification.
- 3:04It means their data centers have the new hardware.
- 3:07The back end is ready for a ton of new users.
- 3:09So for Linux folks, this is a huge deal. Right
- 3:11now it's all browser workarounds or unofficial
- 3:14apps, which can be. Janky. It introduces lag.
- 3:17visual glitches. A native app just smooths everything
- 3:20out. And they're starting with Ubuntu 24 .04,
- 3:24which makes sense. It's the standard. It is.
- 3:26But I think the bigger play for the mass market
- 3:28is the Fire TV app. Oh, absolutely. Bringing
- 3:31it to the Fire TV Stip 4K Plus and 4K Max models.
- 3:35Yeah, that means you can stream a super demanding
- 3:37PC game right to your big screen TV with just
- 3:40a controller. No console needed, no expensive
- 3:43gaming PC, it just completely removes that barrier.
- 3:47I really guess. And then they added this other
- 3:49feature which is niche, but, you know, very cool.
- 3:52The flight control support. Full support for
- 3:54joysticks, yokes, all the gear from Thrustmaster
- 3:58and Logitech. So you could be a serious Microsoft
- 4:00Flight Simulator fan with all the professional
- 4:02controls. And screen the game to a basic laptop.
- 4:06totally democratizes that high -end simulation
- 4:08world. It really does. It's no longer about who
- 4:10can afford the hardware, just who has the internet.
- 4:12And they're adding little quality of life things,
- 4:14too, like automatic sign -in for battle .net.
- 4:17It's all about making the platform frictionless.
- 4:20OK, so speaking of building a platform nobody
- 4:22can leave, let's pivot to the other side of their
- 4:25business. The engine room. Artificial intelligence.
- 4:28Right. Story number two is the big one for investors.
- 4:31The Vera Rubin AI super chip is officially in
- 4:35full production. This was the centerpiece of
- 4:37Jensen Huang's keynote at CES. He confirmed that
- 4:40Rubin, which is the. successor to Blackwell,
- 4:44will start shipping to customers in the second
- 4:46half of this year. And the performance leap here
- 4:48isn't just a small step. The numbers are kind
- 4:51of wild. They are. They're saying Rubin can train
- 4:54certain large AI models using about one fourth
- 4:57the number of chips that Blackwell needs. OK,
- 5:00that's impressive. But the number that really
- 5:02made me sit up was the cost. The operational
- 5:04cost. This is the game changer. They project
- 5:07Rubin will cut the cost of running these massive
- 5:10AI models to about one tenth of the current system.
- 5:13One tenth. Not ten percent cheaper, but ten times
- 5:15cheaper. Exactly. And that number is so critical
- 5:18right now. Why? What's the strategic play there?
- 5:21Because Nvidia's biggest customers, Amazon, Google,
- 5:24maybe even Meta, are all spending billions to
- 5:27design their own custom chips. To get away from
- 5:29relying on Nvidia and cut down on those massive
- 5:31costs, right? Precisely. So with Rubin, NVIDIA
- 5:35is basically saying, go ahead, spend years building
- 5:38a chip that might catch up to our last generation.
- 5:41Or you could just buy our new one, which is 10
- 5:43times cheaper to run. It makes it incredibly
- 5:45difficult to justify leaving their ECR system.
- 5:48Immensely. And this isn't just one chip. The
- 5:51Rubin platform is a six chip system built on
- 5:54TSMC's three nanometer process. They're selling
- 5:58a whole integrated solution. And there was this
- 6:00one technical detail about the cooling that I
- 6:02thought was brilliant. They're using hot water.
- 6:05Yeah, hot water around 45 degrees Celsius. It
- 6:09sounds completely backwards, but it's genius.
- 6:11So how does that work? Well, traditional data
- 6:13centers use tons of energy to chill water way
- 6:16down by using water that's already warm, but
- 6:18still cooler than the chips. It can still effectively
- 6:21pull the heat away. Right. And then because that
- 6:23water is already hot, you can efficiently reuse
- 6:26that waste heat for other things like heating
- 6:29buildings. So it's a massive energy saving on
- 6:31both ends. You're not paying to chill it and
- 6:33you're recapturing the heat. It's a complete
- 6:35system design. It shows they're not just a chip
- 6:37company anymore. They're an AI system architect.
- 6:40Which makes that full production announcement
- 6:43feel like a huge statement to the market. It's
- 6:45them saying the roadmap is on track, the rumors
- 6:47are wrong, and our advantage is actually accelerating.
- 6:51Okay, let's bring it back to the consumer side
- 6:52for our final story, graphics, specifically DLSS
- 6:574 .5. Right, their AI upscaling tech. And this
- 7:01announcement is really a tale of two parts. The
- 7:03first part being good news for basically everyone
- 7:06who already owns an RTX card. Immediate good
- 7:08news. You're getting a big upgrade to image quality
- 7:11thanks to a new second generation super resolution
- 7:15model. And this new model has five times the
- 7:18compute power of the old one. Exactly. It's designed
- 7:20specifically to clean up those little visual
- 7:22artifacts you sometimes see, like ghosting or
- 7:25shimmering on fine details. I've seen that, like
- 7:27on a fence in the distance or something moving
- 7:29quickly. That's what they're targeting. And the
- 7:32best part is this is available today for all
- 7:34RTX owners through the NVIDIA app beta. So a
- 7:38free instant upgrade. The full driver release
- 7:41is January 13th. Yep. A great win for the existing
- 7:44user base. But the second part of DLSS 4 .5 is
- 7:48where they look to the future. to the RTX 50
- 7:50series cards. This is where things get really
- 7:53forward -looking. They're introducing something
- 7:55called 6X multi -frame generation. So for every
- 7:58one frame your GPU actually renders, the AI is
- 8:01generating five additional frames. A six -fold
- 8:04multiplier on your frame rate. The goal is to
- 8:07make things like 240Hz gaming at 4K resolution
- 8:10a reality. OK, but when you're inserting that
- 8:13many AI frames, doesn't that create a lot of
- 8:15input lag? That's a huge concern for competitive
- 8:18players. It's the number one concern. And that's
- 8:20where the smartest part of this comes in. They
- 8:22call it dynamic multi -frame generation, or DMFG.
- 8:25And this is the automatic transmission idea.
- 8:28That's the perfect analogy. Instead of just locking
- 8:30you into 6x mode all the time, which can add
- 8:32latency when you don't need it, it adapts. It
- 8:34adapts on the fly. It monitors your GPU load.
- 8:37If you're in a simple scene, maybe it only uses
- 8:392x generation for minimum latency. But then a
- 8:42huge explosion goes off and your frame rate starts
- 8:45to tank. DMFG sees that and it instantly upshifts
- 8:49to 4x or 6x to keep your final output super smooth
- 8:53locked right at that high refresh rate. So it's
- 8:56intelligent. It's not just a brute force multiplier.
- 8:58That's the key advantage. It manages both performance
- 9:00and latency at the same time, which is something
- 9:03competitors really don't have a good answer for
- 9:05yet. So a great set of announcements all around.
- 9:08Absolutely. Now, before we wrap this up, we have
- 9:10one more sponsor to tell you about. That's right.
- 9:12The show is also sponsored by Scony, the premium
- 9:15golf shoe store. If you're serious about your
- 9:17game, you know how important your footwear is.
- 9:20Scony makes some of the best engineered and frankly,
- 9:23best looking golf shoes out there. And they're
- 9:25giving our listeners the same great offer. Use
- 9:28the promo code SNARFL. That's S -N -A -R -F -U
- 9:31-L at checkout. You'll get 15 % off your entire
- 9:34purchase. Just visit scony .com. All right, let's
- 9:38tie this all together. What are the big takeaways
- 9:40from today? OK, three key things. First, high
- 9:43-end PC gaming is becoming more accessible than
- 9:45ever. With GeForce Now W coming to Linux and
- 9:48Fire TV, the hardware barrier is just melting
- 9:51away. Second, the entire economic model for AI
- 9:55is about to shift. Vera Rubin's promise of a
- 9:58ten -fold reduction in running costs is going
- 10:01to change everything. It puts huge pressure on
- 10:03anyone trying to compete with their own custom
- 10:05silicon. And finally, for gamers, the visuals
- 10:07are getting better right now with DLSS 4 .5.
- 10:10And the performance of tomorrow is getting smarter
- 10:12and smoother with that dynamic frame generation.
- 10:15The common thread through all of it is efficiency
- 10:17and integration. NVIDIA is selling complete,
- 10:20highly engineered systems, not just components.
